Looking by Back Ed Pany Heimer Series Part 3 of 3- Plainfield to Gettysburg In this third and final column, I am speaking to Mrs. Janet Johnson, a former Nazareth High School graduate whose great-great-grandfather William Henry Heimer served with the 153rd Regiment in the Civil War. The soldier was born in Plainfield Township, Northampton County. As a young man you could find him plowing with horses, planting and harvesting grain on the George Bender Farm in Plainfield Township. William was first married to Anna Rebecca Schaeffer in

1851. Two weeks after their first child was born, tragedy struck the family and his wife Anna died. Three years later he married Sabina Schaeffer, sister of Anna. They had six children in 17 years. In April of 1861, the nation was split by the Civil War. William was married and raising a family, but he answered the call and enlisted as a Private in the United States Army on Oct. 7, 1862 in Nazareth. Northampton Area High School presents Classic 'And Then There Were None’

by KERI LINDENMUTH The Northampton Area High School Theatre Company brought Agatha Christie’s classic mystery novel to life on stage. For two nights only, on Nov. 8 and Nov. 9, the theatre troupe turned the high school auditorium into Solder Island, the remote island mansion at the heart of Christie’s novel. There, ten strangers gather for what they think is a short getaway. Soon, it becomes evident that there are darker powers at play. The guests on the island include judge Justice Wargrave (played by Lauren Lalik), secretary Vera Claythorne (played by Ericka Csencsits), soldier Philip Lombard (played by Andrew Van Antwerp), detective William Blore (played by Madelyn Rex), Dr. Armstrong (played by Cade Kocher), butler Mr. Rogers (played by Shawn-Tyler Laub),

spinster Emily Brent (played by Molly Wiesner), General Mackenzie (played by Cole Kiefer), maid Mrs. Rogers (played by Shelby Wandler), and reckless adventurer Anthony Marston (played by Anna Svolos). Colin Finney plays Fred Narracott, the fisherman taking the guests to the island. All of the characters are really caricatures of men and women seen in typical mystery pieces. It was something director Gianna Neal knew would be new for students. She said they excelled on stage. “Even though these characters are very unusual and different than the students themselves, they have embodied these crazy personalities and have made them their own,” she said in her director’s notes.

Nazareth and the men marched to Harrisburg, a total of 108 miles. Remember, the road system was primitive, modern highways were lacking. The Company was led by Capt. Owen Rice, a teacher in Nazareth and Col. Charles Glanz, a German who owned the Kuebler Brewery in Easton. Glanz was wounded at Chancellorsville and taken prisoner by the Confeder-

ates. Rice was wounded in the same battle, which resulted in paralysis of the left hand. At the time of enlistment, Mr. William Heimer was a skilled bricklayer. He was assigned to the First Division 11th Corps Army of the Potomac. At Gettysburg the regiment was under the command of Col. Leopold Von Gilsa. Private Heimer fought in the epic three-day battle that turned the tide of the war. The Confederates invasion of the north failed. In January Heimer was hospitalized with a severe cold and bleeding at Brooks Station in Virginia returning to duty in May 1863. The 153rd was mustered out in July 1863. William and his comrades were discharged. He received $33.65 for clothing in kind or money in advance. He later joined the Lafayette Post #217 of the Grand Army of the Republic in Easton. His name is listed on the Pennsylvania Monument in Gettysburg.

November 21-27, 2019 3

In 1890 William began receiving a pension of $17 a month, which was increased to $20 in 1907. Following his military service William returned to his family. He and his wife had two additional daughters and a son. He worked as a bricklayer, carpenter and farmer. William died of pneumonia at age 82 on Feb. 7, 1911 and is buried in the old section of Plainfield Cemetery. Proud of his Civil War service, William’s wife would die two months later. The Heimers were primarily farmers in the Plainfield area. They embodied the Pennsylvania German values of faith, family and nation. It was a pleasure to speak to Janet and Bill Johnson. Our discussions were friendly and informative. They cherish their family’s heritage and service to our nation. We thank them for sharing their genealogy with our readers and hope to speak to them in the future.

9 ideas for the holiday season

Newburg Road home

GHWS 39th Annual Christmas House Tour Submitted by CAROL BEAR-HECKMAN Plans are underway for the 39th Annual Christmas House Tour. The Governor Wolf Historical Society will open six private historic homes and four early buildings on Saturday, Dec. 7. The homes will be open from 10 a.m. until 4 p.m. This year’s theme is “Artistic Dates and Documents,” featuring dated frakturs, early birth certificates, old family bibles, dated quilts and more. The Home News will feature one of the homes each week until tour day. This home on Newburg Road has been a work in progress for at least 200 years. The property’s first owner, George Palmer, purchased the land from the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania in 1797. Palmer sold the property to John Dech

in 1814, and it remained in the Dech family until mid-twentieth century. It has been the current family’s home since 1983. Although they have been unable to document when the original house was built, construction techniques point to 1780-1820. Neighborhood lore suggests that the house was originally the home of the Newburg Road toll keeper. The house was constructed in four separate stages, and the interior has undergone numerous renovations. The original house is the section closest to Newburg Road. Constructed of stuccocovered fieldstone, it was built in the traditional Dutch farmhouse style. The brick rear half was constructed in two separate phases. Unfired brick was used for the first floor while fired brick was used for the second. The difference between the two floors is

clearly visible since the unfired brick is softer and darker. The most recent expansion occurred during the winter of 2013-14 when they added two extensions that include a mudroom, bathroom, laundry, pantry, and screened porch. During the spring and summer of 2019, the aluminum siding was removed, the brick repointed, and the stucco reapplied. They have been renovating the interior of the house one room at a time, attempting to preserve the house’s original workmanship without turning it into a museum. One of their favorite restorations is the dining room’s plank wall and walk-in fireplace that they didn’t even know existed until several layers of past alteration had been removed. They also gutted and rebuilt the kitchen, a process that revealed additional secrets of the house’s history. On the same day, the Annual Historic Christmas Family Day will fill the GWHS campus from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Historic craftsmen will demonstrate, the 153 Civil War Coddington Reenactors will be encamped. Taste and watch hearth cooking, spinning and weaving, iron crafts, early powder horns and flintlocks, and more. There will be arts and crafts for children. Make this a yearly family destination. There is no parking or admission fee. A freewill donation may be dropped into our preservation jars if you wish. There will also be quality crafters selling their wares and fresh greens for sale. The Daily Grind in the Schoolhouse Café will offer food to take with you on the tour, or to enjoy there. Ticket books are available- $25 advance and $30 day of tour. Booklets will be sold at S. Seem Antiques in Bath, Miller Ace Hardware on Rt. 329, Curt’s Cyclery in Nazareth, Country Capers in Bethlehem and Bath Drugs on Rt. 512.

How can you create the holiday season for your clients/customers? Let’s start with Thanksgiving. One of my clients is hosting a “Giving Thanks” event. Folks pay $20 to attend and 100 percent of the proceeds goes to Meals on Wheels of the Greater Lehigh Valley. The restaurant provides heavy appetizers for the evening and everyone enjoys a night of giving, networking, fellowship and more. Now, that’s the holiday season and we are giving thanks. Then I have a partner that wants to open his store for a night and give 20 percent of all sales to a charity. He’s bringing in Mr. and Mrs. Santa Claus and singers from a local high school. Festive, charitable and it’s for sure the holiday season and giving thanks.

Nine ideas for the holiday season: 1. If you are hiring new staff, host a customer service training so they are smiling, friendly, and helpful to your customers. 2. Host a holiday party for your staff after the holiday rush. 3. When the going gets tough and it’s very busy, bring in some holiday treats for your staff. 4. Select a charity for the season and match donations from your staff and clients.

5. Send a check to a charity in the name of your staff. 6. Offer free parking. 7. Host a raffle, donate the prize and send the dollars to a local charity. 8. Encourage 'yes' culture within the company; instead of words like unfortunately, no, we can’t, how about 'I will check for you, I’m not sure, maybe, let me offer something similar.' 9. Set the example for your employees, help them to understand the true meaning of the holidays and how helping others will fill their hearts as well as yours. Next week is Thanksgiving and I would like to thank the Home News and all my readers for their support over the years. Then comes Black Friday, I’m shopping local. On Dec. 1, Bethlehem kicks-off the only “LIVE” advent calendar in the country starting at 5:30 p.m. where folks gather 'round the historic Goundie House and are entertained and given a small gift. Whatever you decide, Happy Giving Thanks for the holidays.

that will boost your home equity value. 1. Install crown molding in your entry and entertainment spaces. This gives a polished look to any room. You will get a nice return later when you sell because buyers love the look of crown molding. 2. Install chair molding in your dining room. It provides a natural dividing line between the top and bottom of the walls. You can paint these areas different colors or install wallpaper on one side or the other. Another option is to put panel molding below for a formal look. 3. Is the light fixture in your entry dated? You can install a new light to spruce up the space for the holidays and to update your home year round. 4. Check your dining room light as well. Making this change can transform a room for the holidays. A chandelier also provides a space for garland hanging above the table. 5. Spruce up your guest bath with a fresh coat of paint and some new towels. Most bath fixtures last decades, but the walls may look dingy. Choose a color and coordinate it with linens that match. 6. Painting any room ranks among the top holiday home improvement tips that will boost your home equity value. You can paint your entertainment space and make your home feel and look fresh.

7. When painting different rooms, consider updating outlet and switch plates. Little details like this can make your rooms look complete and polished. 8. Your entry door is the first thing your guests will see. A fresh coat of paint will update even the most dated door. Change out the hardware for a completely different look. With that done, add a wreath, then you are ready to greet your guests. 9. Changing doorknobs throughout the house is a good update to your home. It will give you a fresh look to present to guests, and it adds value to your home. 10. What can you do in the kitchen? Most do not want to do a major renovation. However, changing cabinet knobs and applying fresh paint will give your room a completely different look. These holiday home improvement tips that will boost your home equity are easy to do for most DIY homeowners. You can do many of these little projects within a few hours or in a couple of days. Give your equity a boost when preparing for the holidays. For bigger projects, find out how your home equity can be used to finance home improvements. This free, downloadable guide answers the most common questions we get about home equity lines of credit.

‘And Then There Were None’ Continued from page 1

During the guests’ first evening, their fun is interrupted by a mysterious voice, accusing them of causing the death of friends, family, and strangers. Now, they must each pay for the harm they

November 21-27, 2019 11

have caused. One-by-one, the guests mysteriously meet their deadly fates, with the nursery rhyme “Ten Little Soldiers” serving as a blueprint of who will come next. The guests turn against each other, knowing that one of them must be the murderer. The play is, according to Neal, “extremely dark, creepy, and dramatic.” However, there is still humor found throughout the production, from the nagging Emily Brent to the flirtatious Philip Lombard. Readers familiar with the novel would have noticed a few differences, including a unique gender bent take on Justice Wargrave and an ending that shocked even fans of the novel. The theatre company will return to the stage in a much lighter production this spring, performing Rodgers and Hammerstein’s Cinderella from March 19 until March 22.

Freeman Announces $1.33 Million in grant Funding for Easton

Submitted by SHANNON KEITH A $1.33 million state grant will fund safety improvements along Bushkill Drive in the city of Easton, state Rep. Robert Freeman announced today. Freeman said the grant will be used to improve pedestrian safety, accessibility and landscaping along the Bushkill Corridor. “This is great news for Easton,” Freeman said. “This grant will assist in the development of former industrial sites in the area, while making enhancements to existing components of the corridor that need to be addressed. Unfortunately, Bushkill Drive has missing sidewalks and needs a number of transportation infrastructure improvements to enhance pedestrian safety and access. This project will provide better routes for pedestrians, calm traffic, meet environment objectives, and create better connectivity with the Karl Stirner Arts Trail and surrounding neighborhoods.” The details of the grant are as follows: • Develop alternative transpor-

tation links throughout the corridor. • Construct 610 feet of asphalt trail from the Karl Stirner Arts Trail north to Bushkill Drive. • Rehabilitate an historic railroad trestle to be used as a pedestrian bridge. • Add 1,000 feet of 8-foot wide asphalt path. • Add 920 feet of concrete sidewalk and curbing. • Repair 300 feet of concrete sidewalk. • Install ADA ramps, streetlights and landscaping. The total project cost is $1.57 million, and the city is requesting a waiver to the local match requirement. Freeman said the funding was awarded by the Commonwealth Financing Authority under the state’s Multimodal Transportation Fund, which encourages economic development and ensures that safe and reliable transportation is more widely available to Pennsylvanians. More information about the CFA is available at the agency’s website.

Pet Scams (Holiday)

Submitted by STEVE GARDNER The holidays are a popular time to add a new furry member to the family, but choosing a pet – especially online - can be tricky and sometimes dangerous. A national survey found that more than 80% of sponsored search sites offering pets for sale were fraudulent in 2017. The websites look legit and the “sellers” will ask you typical adoption questions, but the adorable photos you are falling in love with are stolen from legitimate sites. Once you start paying these scammers, the charges start to pile up for things like last minute medical needs or travel expenses, and the pet you’ve fallen in love with never shows up. Thoroughly vet any online offering from breeders, shelters or rescue organizations. Better yet, consider adopting locally. Be a fraud fighter. If you can spot a scam, you can stop a scam. Visit the AARP Fraud Watch Network at www.aarp.org/fraudwatchnetwork or call the AARP Fraud Watch Network Helpline at 1-877-908-3360 to report a scam or get help if you’ve fallen victim.

Grateful To Whom?

Harriet Martineau was an atheist. One morning she and a Christian friend stepped out into the glories of a beautiful fall morning. As Harriet saw the brilliant sun peaking through the haze, the frost on the meadow, and the brightly colored leaves making their way lazily to the ground, she was overwhelmed with the beauty and burst forth with “I am so thankful. I’m just so grateful for it all.” Her believing friend asked, “Grateful to Whom, my dear?” Jesus told of a wealthy farmer whose grounds had “brought forth plentifully” and who was planning to build larger barns to store his crops. He said to himself, “Soul, thou hast much goods laid up for many years; take thine ease, eat, drink, and be merry” (Luke 12:19). This “self-made man” expressed no gratitude to God for his success, and he left God out of his future plans. But then God spoke to him, “Thou fool, this night thy soul shall be required of thee: then whose shall those things be, which thou hast provided?” (v.20). In this man’s foolish conceit and pride he was blinded to the truth that his achievements and accumulated riches were directly attributable to God! After all, God made the seeds he had planted, God made the ground that “brought forth plentifully,” and God gave the rain and sunshine! Further, he was a fool to leave God out of his future plans. Applying these truths to us, Jesus said, “So is he that layeth up treasure for himself, and is not rich toward God” (v.21) Are you grateful and thankful to God for all He has given you and done for you? “Thine, O LORD, is the greatness, and the power, and the glory, and the victory, and the majesty: for all that is in the heaven and in the earth is thine...therefore, our God, we thank thee...for all things come of thee” (1 Chronicles 29:11-14). – Written by the late Pastor Daniel E. Lundmark

Red Cross Makes it easy And rewarding To save lives this Holiday season

submitted by ALANA MAUGER The American Red Cross urges eligible donors to be the lifeline for patients in need this holiday season by making an appointment to give blood. While helping to save lives is likely motivation enough, those who come out to give Nov. 18-Dec. 18 will also receive a $5 Amazon. com Gift Card via email, courtesy of Suburban Propane. Still need reasons to fit lifesaving blood donation into busy holiday schedules? Try these three: • It’s quick and easy to find a convenient blood drive. Search for drives by ZIP code and make an appointment to donate using the Red Cross Blood Donor App, online at RedCrossBlood.org, by calling 1-800-RED CROSS (1-800-7332767) or by enabling the Blood Donor Skill on any Alexa Echo device. • Donors can save time by completing a RapidPass®. The entire donation process only takes about an hour, but donors can save time with RapidPass. Pre-donation reading and health history questions can be completed online to save about 15 minutes. • Donors will get important health information. Donors receive a mini-health screening to help determine eligibility that includes blood pressure, pulse and hemoglobin readings. First-time donors will also find out their blood type soon after donating.

As schedules fill with holiday parties, shopping and fun with friends and family, many blood donors delay giving. Unfortunately, that may lead to delays in treatments for patients relying on blood. Right now, there is a critical need for type O blood donors. The Red Cross is thanking those who come to give Nov. 18-Dec. 18 with a $5 Amazon.com Gift Card via email, courtesy of Suburban Propane. (Restrictions apply; see amazon.com/gc-legal. More information and details are available at RedCrossBlood.org/Thanks.) Additionally, those who come to give Nov. 27-30 will receive an exclusive long-sleeved T-shirt-supplies last. Upcoming blood donation opportunities: Bethlehem- Nov. 21 from 9:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m., Moravian College, Haupert Union Building, 1200 Main St. and Dec. 17 from 1 to 6 p.m., Faulkner Subaru, 330 Stoke Park Road. Easton- Dec. 6 from 2 to 7 p.m., Charles Chrin Community Center, 4100 Green Pond Road. Nazareth- Dec. 11 from noon to 4 p.m., Nazareth YMCA, 33 S. Main St. How to donate blood Simply download the American Red Cross Blood Donor App, visit RedCrossBlood.org, call 1-800RED CROSS (1-800-733-2767) or enable the Blood Donor Skill on any Alexa Echo device to make an appointment or for more information. All blood types are needed to ensure a reliable supply for patients. A blood donor card or driver’s license or two other forms of identification are required at checkin. Individuals who are 17 years of age in most states (16 with parental consent where allowed by state law), weigh at least 110 pounds.
