Lehigh Twp. Rails to Trails Announces December WalkSubmitted by
NANCY THATCHER Lehigh Township Rails to Trails is glad to announce the resumption of our winter walks. On the first Saturday in December, LTRT will be leading a walk around some of the historical areas of South Bethlehem. Most people living in the Lehigh Valley know something about Bethlehem Steel. Not only was south Bethlehem the site of the steel plant, but many of the heads of the steel and related industries lived in nearby mansions. The walk will be starting in the ArtsQuest, SteelStacks area, which has a couple of free parking lots nearby. We’ll meet across from the ArtsQuest building at the stairway and elevator leading to the Hoover-Mason Trestle. As you stroll along the trestle walkway, you will be able to read about and view many of the structures that played a vital role in the Bethlehem Steel manufacturing process. Next, we will walk along Third Street and over to Delaware Avenue and vicinity to learn about the mansions that were built by some of the industrial barons in the 1800s. The headquarters of the former Lehigh Valley Railroad will also be on our route. On the way back to the SteelStacks area, we’ll traverse part of the Southside Greenway. A visit to the National Museum of Industrial History will be an optional end to our journey. The museum is associated with the Smithsonian Institute. There is an entrance fee of $10-$11 to

the museum, which houses machinery from the steel and other local industries. At present there is also an exhibit of photos by Stephen Mallon, featuring life on the rails, to deconstruction in the recycling yard, to tracing the elements of human-made machines. The walk will be approximately three miles long and will probably take at least two hours, depending on how long we spend on the Trestle and in the Museum. This activity will take place on Saturday, December 5, beginning at 1 p.m. Sunday, December 6, will be the rain/snow date. Please bring a mask. Although this walk is free, we are asking you to register by providing your name and cell phone number. Please send this information to Nancy by calling or texting her at 484-3309627. We will also post information on our Facebook page.

Christmas spirit alive. Bethlehem is known as the Christmas City and has been recognized by Oprah Magazine, Conde Nast Traveler, and many other news outlets as one of the most quaint and magical places to visit during the holidays…and it’s in our backyard. There are still many ways to enjoy this little gem of ours like visiting the Christmas Huts on Main, by taking a horse and carriage ride throughout the downtown, reserving a dinner table at The Historic Hotel Bethlehem, visiting the Moravian Bookshop, which happens to be the oldest bookstore in the country, or by booking a meal at one of the many restaurants that fill the downtown with their exquisite cuisine and festive cocktails. Don’t forget to stop in some of the shops while you are downtown that offer unique gifts and many other items to choose from. Bethlehem is also hosting a virtual tree lighting on November 25 at 5 p.m., on Service Electric Cable TV. This will include the tree lighting, a message from Mayor Bob Donchez, and a Christmas concert featuring the Liberty High School Marching Band, Swingtime Dolls, Holmes Family Singers, LV Urban Latin Orchestra, Seth Witcher, and Cunningham & Associates. Bethlehem’s downtown is full of Christmas charm, so don’t miss out, wear a mask, stay safe, and enjoy all it has to offer. If you don’t already, this year is definitely the year to take your family on a new adventure by cutting down a live Christmas tree. Kemmerer’s Tree Farm, 3220 Valley View Dr., Bath, Seiple Farms, 5761 Nor Bath Blvd, Bath, Uganst Tree Farms, 7300 Beth Bath Pike, Bath, and Brookside Christmas Tree Farm, 6699 Locust Road, Bath, are four great tree farms in our area that you should visit. Easton is now offering a His-
toric Winter Village in the center square during the weekends which kicks off on November 27. The winter village will feature over 30 huts filled with items from the city’s favorite restaurants and retailers. The huts will be placed in the circle around the Peace Candle, which will be lit on November 28. This year, due to COVID-19, the city of Easton will be sharing a video featuring the lighting ceremony that will be posted to social media. Easton has also added an outdoor iceskating rink on the 300 block of Northampton Street that will host daily live music and entertainment adding to the charm of this new holiday hallmark experience. The ice-skating rink, also open on the weekends, fits 7580 people, but will only allow 35 people on the ice at one time due to COVID-19 and safety concerns. Skating is free for city residents and $5 for those from out of town. You can rent skates there for $5 as well. The Winter Lights Spectacular at the Lehigh Valley Zoo, 5150 Game Preserve Road, Schnecksville, has been featured in USA Today and contains over 1.2 million twinkling lights including many holiday displays. This event runs from mid-November through January 2, Wednesday through Sunday evenings. Masks are required at all times and tickets can be purchased online at lvzoo.com where you can book your time slot. This event hosts music, live Princess performances (Frozen and Beauty and the Beast), Christmas movie clips, offers s’mores, hot cocoa, and other treats for sale, and so much more. It is a wonderful event filled with the magic of Christmas. Many towns still have their Christmas Tree lightings scheduled, Nazareth’s is on December 11, 7 p.m., in Veterans Park, but this is a very fluid situation that is changing daily so please check your town's website for more information. Nazareth is also hosting Christmas in Nazareth on December 12 from 10 a.m. to Continued on page 15

about to kick off. Only this year, we can expect a big uptick in online shopping as we continue dealing with the pandemic. Here are three tips to make sure the hot deal you’re clicking on is really legitimate. First, be suspicious of any discounts larger than 55 percent off. Second, be on the lookout for irregular contact information, such as a Yahoo or Gmail address instead of a corporate retail account. Third, be wary of web addresses that are overly complex, don’t include the corporate retail name or don’t start with “https” -- they are all indicators that your data or your money may not be safe. BATH AREA Bath's Christmas Tree Lighting Ceremony cancelled Cyber scams It is with much sadness, I announce the cancellation of the Christmas Tree Lighting Ceremony, scheduled for Sunday, November 29. As the Mayors before me - I care deeply about every single resident and business owner in this Borough. This beautiful small town ceremony has turned into an "event" and, I cannot in my heart, put over 100+ persons at risk. I choose
to err on the side of caution. I cannot and will not get into details, although, there are several positive cases here in our Borough. Therefore, I look forward to next year's ceremony which will be held on Sunday, Nov. 28, 2021 at 6 p.m. All will remain the same - the Christmas Tree Lighting Ceremony Honoree will again be Mr. Russell Siegfried; the Disney charac-
ters will attend, the singer will be the same, those invited to speak will remain the same, Santa will attend - and, hopefully we can bring back the free horse and carriage rides as well. I wish you all a very Happy Thanksgiving, and, remind

area community and we are excited to be able to showcase them later this month but also encourage people to not only support local on this day but during the holidays and throughout the entire year. Mark your calendars for November 28 and plan to shop local all day—it will be a fun and energizing day!” Lisa Borick, Nazareth Downtown Manager, said, "Small businesses are the heart and soul of a community, Nazareth is fortunate to have such a diverse array in the downtown. Small Business Saturday is a great way to show how much we appreciate them, this year more than ever. Come out and discover what Nazareth has to offer." Lauren Bertucci, Manager of Affiliated Chambers for the Greater Lehigh Valley Chamber of Commerce, commented, “Encouraging people to support local is always in the forefront of our minds. Small Business Saturday gives us a platform to shine an even larger spotlight on our local establishments and we are thrilled to be working in partnership with NEDC to do so. Both organizations understand that our small businesses are the foundation of our community and we are committed to supporting them in any way that we can.”
Borough Council Continued from page 3
Borough Fire Department will sponsor their annual Santa Run on Saturday, December 12 starting at noon; however, there will be no gift exchange due to the ongoing Coronavirus pandemic. Northampton Borough’s feral cat issue was briefly addressed to give a few updates. First, a meeting was held on November 20 with the Animal Control officer, health officer, and code officers to further discuss the issue. Five cats were trapped and taken to Veronica at Something Fishy; she will bring them to get spayed/neutered, vaccinated, and ear tipped. Council members considered a request from The Gospel Chapel to stage a live nativity scene on Thursday, December 24. The original request included a municipal park, pavilion, and bandshell; however, the parks have been winterized and only Canal Street has a working restroom. Borough Council discussed the idea of letting the Gospel Chapel use the gazebo or bandshell and providing the restroom trailer. Ultimately, the motion was tabled to allow for discussion between council and the Chapel. Finally, Borough Manager LeRoy Brobst answered questions about next year’s budget, but will rework it once again for the December 3 meeting. It was also mentioned that COVID-19 cases are on the rise again and council discussed the idea of moving their meetings back to a virtual platform. The next borough council meeting will be held on Thursday, December 3 at 7:30 p.m. in the Northampton Borough Municipal Building.

we are making this annual event into a four-day event, with five different opportunities to enjoy a holiday classic movie and support our local food pantry. We are keeping this tradition alive. Join the Northampton Area Chamber of Commerce, as we invite you and a guest to attend a free screening of the classic holiday movie “Polar Express.” New this year, we are asking you to register and reserve your seats, due to CDC guidelines and current mandates only allowing 90 people in the theatre at a time. Again, registration is required. No there is not a fee, but we need to have you on the list to enter the theatre. Names will be checked at each showing. We need to maintain a healthy body and immune system, regardless of the status of a vaccine.” Handlon’s book “Your Journey to Aging Well” is the culmination of information gleaned over 30 years from both the dedicated learning (herbal and nutrition studies) and her health passion started by Prevention Magazine. “I have experienced most of the typical ways that our society has featured for being healthy – many different diet approaches, physical and mental exercise routines as well as feeling like nothing is sustainable.” “Your Journey to Aging Well” provides you with some basic information to allow you to determine the best path for you. Start your journey with an understanding of the impact of your choices. Herbs to Your Success is a health and wellness spa located in Nazareth, Pa. since 1994.
