Looking by Back Ed Pany Classic to Rock, Part 2 of 2

Steve Myers led the Grace UCC Choir In our last column, we followed the musical journey of the late Steve Myers, a well-known musician who, in the 1960s and ’70s, performed with the rock group Belleau Wood. They appeared in numerous venues including King Arthur’s Court, Quakertown; Allentown Italian Club; K-Bar, Freemansburg; Black Bear Inn, New York; Dixie Street Saloon; Bill Daniel’s Rock Place; Weona Park, Pen Argyl; high school rock concerts; the Roxy Theatre; and dozens more. After Belleau Wood played its last concert, Steve entered a new phase in his music odyssey- playing both piano and organ at wineries, casinos, country clubs, private parties and nursing homes. He played, by request, popular, classical and rock music. The Myers family was very active at Grace United Church of

Christ in Northampton. Steve would embrace church music and would devote 40 years of his life as minister of music at Grace. One of his previous music mentors was Mr. Ludwig Lenel, who was the composer in residence at Muhlenberg College. Mr. Lenel had been a student of world-famous Albert Schweitzer. In order to refine his music experience, he took 10 years of vocal training. Steve continued his training, which included five semesters at Westminster Choir Continued on page 9

to the hub. Justin explains that his job as a linehaul driver is very fast paced with only a seven-minute window of time between when he has to get back on the road, so that he doesn’t miss his gate time, which comes with extra reports he must fill out if he’s not back at a certain time.

What the general public doesn’t know about this line of work is that the trucks are governed and there are laws in place that mandate the speed of trucks, making it a very overregulated industry for safety measures, which is why Justin suggests people have more patience with truckers in order to ensure the safety of everyone on the road. Although his job can be stressful with long hours and five or six-day work weeks, Justin admits that he also likes the pressure. However, the long hours have unfortunately prohibited him from being readily there for

his family and loved ones over the years, which is his least favorite part of the job. On the other hand, Justin’s sacrifices have provided him with a lucrative career, and he is thankful that it allowed his wife to stay home to raise their two sons for as long as she liked before recently deciding to go back to work now that their boys are older. One of the other perks of being a driver is that Justin gets to talk to his best friend for hours every day since they are both truck drivers at FedEx Freight and started out just a month apart from each other some 24 years ago. “Surprisingly, we never run out of things to talk about,” Justin jokes. Being a linehaul driver can also be challenging during inclement weather, which requires him to be aware of sight distance, temperatures and road conditions, although by now, he is a seasoned professional. In fact, Justin’s professionalism earned him his second presidential safety award from FedEx Freight during his 20th year with the company for driving over 2.5 million miles with no accidents or scratches, which he is deservingly proud of. Then, eight years ago, he decided that he wanted to do something to give back. “I love kids and I wanted to find a way to give back and help kids,” Justin explains. He contacted his boss at FedEx and asked to use a trailer to collect toys for kids through Toys for Tots in Allentown. With his boss’ approval, he began setting the trailer up at Klecknersville Rangers Volunteer Fire Company on Sundays, and although he didn’t think this would become something he set up annually, his operation is now approaching 10,000 toys that have been accumulated from donations over the years for Toys for Tots. Once Justin learned more about the organization after his trips to the Toys for Tots warehouse and seeing just how big the operation actually is, he realized that there are volunteers tasked with sorting through and categorizing thousands of toys that come in from a large portion of the Lehigh Valley every day. “They have to sort everything, so I decided I would help them Continued on page 3

There are thousands of toys coming in that would’ve taken hours to sort, so I make it easier by sorting and keeping track of the toys as they come in, which helps out the people at the warehouse,” Justin adds. Over the years, Justin has turned the operation into a family affair with help from his wife and sons. “It allows us to spend more time together and helps teach my boys about giving back. I’m really proud of how involved they have become and how excited they get to help out,” Justin beams. It is certainly clear how much this cause means to Justin, and this year alone, he has received over 1,000 donations already, which he is extremely grateful for. And while the operation grows every year, Justin explains that the past few years have taken a hit due to the economy, which is why he believes it is more important than ever for people to donate toys to less fortunate children. Toys for Tots is always low on toys for girls aged 0 to 2, and Justin’s Facebook page “Unofficial: Toys for Tots” provides updates on what categories he hasn’t received much of to help bolster donations. Those interested in donating can bring new and unwrapped toys to the Klecknersville Rangers Vol. Fire Co. on Sundays from 9 a.m. to noon, so that just like the Grinch, your heart, too, can grow three sizes as the spirit of giving shows you just how magical Christmas can truly be.

There wasn’t a lot of action in the Dart League this week as the matches between Dryland and St. Paul’s and Emmanuel and Star of Bethlehem were postponed due to the lack of players. They’ll be made up at a later date. In real action, we find Blessed Trinity ‘sandwiching’ 3-1 and 4-1 wins around a 3-2 loss to Ebenezer. Leading the way for Blessed Trinity were ‘Buzz” Heidecker going 4 for 10 with Tony DeAngles and Dan Halteman each 4 for 12 apiece. Joe Kish was 5 for 12, Tim Preston 2 for 3, and Zane Blevins with a HR for Ebenezer. The other match of the night saw Christ winning 7-3 and 6-4 over Farmersville, losing the ‘middle game’ 6-4. Top hitters for

Christ UCC were Steve Hunsicker 7 for 14, Jason Matula 5 for 10 (2 HR’s) and Eric Yocum 4 for 12 (2 HR’s). For Farmersville, Tom George was 5 for 13 (HR), Dennis Koehler 4 for 11 and Mark Steigerwalt with a HR.

Mind Your Own Business

by DR. GLENN CLEARIE, DC

If the title doesn’t get your full attention, then what I have to say will. Be it known that what others think of you is none of your business. Let that one sink in. I laugh to think about how often many are concerned, worried or downright distraught about others’ opinions. What, are we in junior high? Why in the world would we give credence to others' blanket opinions of us when they more than likely don’t even like themselves? This life lends itself to much anxiousness on its own without additional input for those who are mere walk-on parts in our lives. Does that sound harsh or irrational to you? I’ll tell you this, If I had listened to others’ opinions, I would not be a chiropractor. In fact, I was repeatedly told the safe bet was anything but being a chiropractor for various reasons. Yet here we are over 25 years later and counting, and I am humbled and grateful beyond measure. I could not imagine myself in any other capacity. Clearly, counsel is desirable

sat down with my father and discussed with him my desire to seek and follow the life path on which I am currently traveling. I listened not only with my ears but also with my heart. In stark contrast is the gossip, the chatter, the unwarranted strife that comes from insincere voices. Life is simply too short for any of those shenanigans. Please mind your own business… What if I told you that my true intent this week is to not concern ourselves with others so much, but with what we have to say to ourselves instead? The discussion thus far was to set up this greater revelation you need to be aware of and consider. A wide net thrown would lament that much of what we say to ourselves is unkind and we would be better served by telling ourselves to mind our own business. I know how laughable this may sound. Perhaps preposterous, yet truth be told, much of what you say to yourself is largely untrue. Maybe not you, just everybody else. I have engaged thousands, and by and large, many have more pessimistic self-chatter than should be filtered through their own minds. This is simply not fair to ourselves. Enough already. Discussions with self should be one of contemplation, understanding and respect. While by no means should you excuse reprehensibility within, I find that most have recurring thoughts

that are down putting and downright unkind for no valid, justifiable reason. Are you following me here? Stop talking about yourself as if you are still the same person you used to be. You are not. You grew up. Kid stuff was kid stuff. You’re an adult. Enough already. Your opinion of the old version is getting tiring. Mind your own business about the person you are and desire to become as the days, weeks, years and decades lay ahead. I had an opportunity to spend five hours with myself driving to western Pennsylvania last week. The blackness of Route 80 West was more than a little foreboding at 4 a.m. After the first hour my hands were hurting. That’s when I realized I was actually gripping the steering wheel way too tight. Not to make too big of a deal, I thought about holding on so tight to those wayward thoughts, opinions, put downs and all the rest that stand in the way of calmness, peace and contentment. Stop gripping life so darn tight and flow, not force.

If you want to mind your own business that truly matters, then start getting your mind off yourself. Think that one over. It’s the best starting point and maybe, just maybe, you can get some traction and true momentum. Get going. My best to you.

College, completing a church music certificate program. Steve also spent eight consecutive summers at Westminster, concentrating on choral and conducting choral rehearsal techniques, vocal techniques and group vocal techniques. At Grace, he spent years working with the children’s choir and music programs. In 1994, after two years of study, Steve was awarded the Colleague Certificate from the American Guild of Organists. During this period, he played piano with the Lehigh Valley Pop Singers. He wrote music that was purchased by Harpo Studios. On May 27, 1982, Steve started his minister of music position at Grace. The minister was Rev. William MacLachlan. One of Mr. Myers’ most memorable days was when he played the new $188,000 Schantz organ. The sound of great music by Mendelssohn and Johann Sebastian Bach graced the church in May 1996. At the conclusion of the service, he was given a standing ovation. By trade, Steve was a mason who worked on some of the largest buildings in the Lehigh Valley, yet he found the time and energy to study and play music for audiences. This writer resides a block from Grace UCC, and I have attended services at the neighborhood church. I was always looking forward to his inspirational music. We thank Joan Matura, wife of Steve Myers, for sharing Steve’s musical journey with our readers. Join us in two weeks.
