Heimer Series Part 2 of 3They Both Served
In this second column we are in Colonial America during the American Revolution, following the Heimer family in Plainfield Township, Northampton County. Charles Heimer saw war approaching so he joined the Northampton Militia. His son Adam followed his father’s example and joined at the age of 14. Charles had a busy life as a part time Militia member, farmer and gristmill operator. In our last column we indicated he received land warrants signed by Benjamin Franklin, President of Pennsylvania’s Supreme Council, acquiring 172 acres. Mr. and Mrs. Johnson, formerly of Nazareth, researched
the family history and uncovered some interesting facts, including some tax statements. You all know how we cringe when we receive our tax bills. We will share one of Mr. Heimer’s bills. In 1785 Mr. Heimer was listed as an owner of a gristmill, a farm of 100 acres, and livestock. His tax amount equals 15 shillings (equal to $1.20). Continued on page 2

Northampton Toys for Tots Regional EMS Continued from page 1 a trailer to Justin every Receives 2019 toyearsupply to use as a central collection point as well as haul the toys to local Toys for Tots hub in CARES Award the Bethlehem. Submitted by TOM UNGER Northampton Regional EMS has received the Pennsylvania CARES Award. The award acknowledges the agency’s dedication to collecting out-of-hospital cardiac arrest (OHCA) data for quality improvement purposes. The agency is one of 145 EMS agencies across the Commonwealth honored by Pennsylvania CARES during October in observance of Sudden Cardiac Arrest Awareness Month. Each year, more than 350,000 people in the United States experience an out-of-hospital cardiac arrest. By participating in Pennsylvania CARES, Northampton Regional EMS demonstrates commitment to saving lives by strengthening the links in the OHCA chain of survival. Pennsylvania CARES is a statewide partner of the Cardiac Arrest Registry to Enhance Survival (CARES), a national cardiac arrest registry that allows communities to measure bystander and 911 response, including information about bystander CPR and AED application, telephone CPR, and EMS response. Northampton Regional EMS’s dedication to collecting OHCA data has helped strengthen the collaboration between 911 centers, first responders, EMS agencies and hospitals, with the ultimate goal to improve OHCA survival rates.
Justin stated, “It has been a great journey thus far. It takes a lot of work, time, planning and running around to get the word out but when I wake up Christmas morning there is a great feeling I get to think that somewhere out there, there are less fortunate kids who now have a pleasurable Christmas morning due to all of my friends and family supporting me and donating. Justin also wanted to recognize his local volunteer fire company, the Klecknersville Fire Rangers, who provide a place and space to set up every year for the collections. Justin is at the fire company every Sunday from 10 a.m. until 1 p.m. He also has a Facebook page, “Unofficial Toys for Tots” if you’d like to know more or follow along.

public had been given enough opportunities to speak. “A lot of [residents on] those streets have not signed…they do not care,” said Councilman Tony Kovalovsky. “They had the opportunity to be here.” Borough Manager Brad Flynn sent residents numerous messages and reminders, and several public meetings were held. “How many public meetings
do we need?” Kovalovsky asked. However, Councilman Frank Hesch said another public meeting would “show [residents] that we are willing to listen.” “We have spent enough time and more than enough money [on this],” stressed Mayor Fiorella Mirabito. Flynn added that the public would be given more time to speak up before the ordinance is officially adopted. Council voted to move the plan forward, with Hesch and Councilwoman Carol Bear-Heckman against the motion.

In other news, council voted to advertise the 2020 draft budget. “Brad [Flynn] did an excellent job [on the budget],” said Councilwoman Phyllis Andrews. She praised Flynn for showing the growth of the borough and for outlining where resources were allocated over time. The budget is public record. Residents can view it on the borough’s website, or contact the municipal building for a hard copy. Finally, on November 13, council will hold another public meeting to discuss its transportation improvement plans. Plans include short-term projects that the borough can carry out to eliminate traffic headaches and keep traffic moving throughout the borough. The borough will be looking for funding opportunities with the state and with PennDOT. Saginario told residents to put pressure on state representatives. He said if more people come together and complain about the truck traffic, the state may be more inclined to act.

A Minute With The Mayor By Fiorella R. Mirabito Welcome back and thank you for spending another "minute" with me. What a busy October I had! From a rock painting event, to recording my annual Christmas message with RCN, to the Northampton County Republican Chairmans Dinner; the opening of Paw Park; several LV Chamber events; the taping of the TV program - "Legislative Review" with Senator Mario Scavello; to hosting the monthly MECAB meeting in our Borough Hall; and, last but certainly not least…being asked to be on a panel of professional women for Girl Scout Troop #8553. All that being said - even though I added more mileage to my car and was

literally exhausted - I enjoyed every single minute. Now, onto some Borough "stuff"…let's start with the snow emergency violation notice with the "sample" violation on the reverse of the card. The Borough administration wanted to get everyone's attention on this boy, did we ever. So many people called into the office and many stopped in…I guess we should've done it on April Fool’s Day. Ok, all kidding aside - last year, several individuals received violations for parking on a snow emergency route. Since I have the pleasure (I use the term loosely) of declaring a snow emergency for our Borough - please remember - it will be published on WFMZ; it will be posted on the Borough Facebook page; and, it will be on the Borough website (bathborough. org). For your information - the snow emergency routes are as follows: Broad, Center, Christmas, East Main, North Chestnut, North Walnut, South Chestnut, South Walnut, Washington, West Main and West Northampton. Be sure to mark your calendars - PA State Police will be at Borough Hall on Monday, Nov. 25 from 2 to 6 p.m. to instruct the correct way of installing car seats for children. PA State Police are dedicated to our Borough - I'm so very grateful for them leading the annual Halloween Parade; participating in Coffee-With-ACop; and, the latest event, TreatsWith-A-Trooper...it was great to
see the kids enjoying time with the Troopers. While on the subject of PSP - I urge you all, "if you see something, say something." Please be sure to call the non-emergency number at PSP and report any suspicious activity…610-861-2026. Lastly, if you haven't signed up for the NIXLE Alert System for the Borough of Bath, please be sure to do so. NIXLE is an information alert system for emergency or community information. NIXLE information is sent by the Borough and from the Bath Water Authority as well. To receive text alerts - text the word "BATH" to 888-777 and you will receive a confirmation within minutes. If you would like to register your landline or your email, please call the Borough office and the staff will guide you…610-837-6525. As many know, I've become a member of the International Lions Club of Bath - an organization focused on helping those less fortunate; persons with diseases of the eye; and contributing to the community. VETERANS DAY 2019 IN MEMORY AND HONOR… During the past year, we have had the privilege of serving the families of Veterans. We are honored to be of service to them in their time of need, just as their loved one was there in our time of need. On Veterans Day, we pay tribute to those who served our country in the name of Freedom, the same Freedom that allows us to serve them. Our prayers are with all the Veterans, their families, and with the brave men and women serving our country today. We also wish to thank those from our area’s veteran service groups who volunteer their time in honor guards and firing squads bestowing the greatest honor for their deceased comrades. This scam originates over the phone with the impostor offering to send a “senior services” agent to the house to pick up the credit card or debit card and PIN so the problem can be fixed. The crook then racks up credit card debt or drains checking accounts attached to debit cards. Know this: banks don’t have “senior service centers” from

10 things I learned from mom By CAROL RITTER I have a good friend who says, “you were raised by Ozzie and Harriet and I was raised by Ozzy Osborn.” True, I was raised by Ozzie and Harriet. My mom and dad were completely dedicated to their three daughters. We went to church every Sunday. We had our chores; I had to do the dishes every night after dinner. One of my most treasured memories was of playing outside with my neighborhood friends. Kick the can, hide and go seek or maybe a game of pinochle (we played to win clothes pins). Simple vacations at

the beach and, most of all, my parents always, and I mean always, had my back. Trust and loyalty were the prevailing emotions. Some basic rules of life were sometimes spoken, sometimes not; and I believe they can be adapted to customer service in today's world. 10 Things I Learned From Mom 1. Don’t embarrass the family in public. (If you have a problem let it be known privately.) 2. Loyalty to the family, demonstrated and spoken. All for one and one for all. 3. When you fail or fall down, we will pick you up and you will try again. 4. Be loyal to family, friends and community. 5. Volunteer in your community. 6. Moderation in everything. 7. Be kind and polite. 8. When you make a mistake, apologize and move on. 9. Never leave the family; always support them, even when times are tough, or especially when times are tough. 10. And, last but not least, say you're sorry or apologize when you do something wrong. For business... The same things can be applied to your business. Don’t embarrass an employee in public, stay loyal at all times. When they make a mistake, help them and lift them up and teach them how to move forward. Volunteer outside of the job and get to know your community. Everything in moderation, don’t overdo anything. Be kind and polite to customers. If you leave your job to better yourself, always stay committed to the team that trained you and mentored you. It all comes down to trust and loyalty. Create a company culture so that when people leave their jobs at the end of the day, they feel accomplished and valued. Mom was right.

Queen Anne Victorian, circa 1875
Governor Wolf Historical Society’s 39th Annual Christmas House Tour submitted by CAROL BEAR-HECKMAN Plans are underway for the 39th Annual Christmas House Tour. The Governor Wolf Historical Society will open six private historic homes and four early buildings on Saturday, Dec. 7. The homes will be open from 10 a.m. until 4 p.m. This year’s theme is “Artistic Dates and Documents,” featuring dated frakturs, early birth certificates, old family bibles, dated quilts and more. The Home News will feature one of the homes each week until tour day. The Erdo-Daugherty home is an early example of a Queen Anne Victorian home, built circa 1875. The house is constructed of wood clapboard siding, slate roof, and a hand laid stone foundation. The builder of the home, Moravian Reverend Eugene Leibert, was the principal at Nazareth Hall from 1867 to 1876. Erdo and Daugherty purchased the home in 2012 and performed major restoration projects to the roof, siding, and the foundation. Inside they removed wallpaper and restored plaster. They also researched the lives of the people who previously resided in the house and were able to gain copies of some old
photographs from the late 1800s through 1910. Note the detail in the woodwork throughout the house. The 1876 Trent tile work in the fireplace surround in the formal dining room and the large sweeping staircase bespeak of opulence in its day. Since being on the tour in 2015 the energetic Erdo-Daughtery team has almost completely transformed the interior with dramatic new coloring. You won’t want to miss it. On the same day, the Annual Historic Christmas Family Day will fill the GWHS campus from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Historic craftsmen will demonstrate, the 153 Civil War Coddington Reenactors will be encamped. Taste and watch hearth cooking, spinning and weaving, iron crafts, early powder horns and flintlocks, and more. Arts and crafts for children. Make this a yearly family destination. No parking or admission fee. A free-will donation may be dropped into our Pres-
ervation Jars if you wish. There will also be quality crafters selling their wares and fresh greens for sale. The Daily Grind in The Schoolhouse Café will offer food to take with you on the tour, or to enjoy there. Ticket books are available- $25 advance and $30 day of tour. Booklets will be sold at S Seem Antiques in Bath, Miller Ace Hardware on RT 329, Curt’s Cyclery in Nazareth, Snow Goose Gallery in Bethlehem and Bath Drugs on RT 512.

Contentment Fosters Thankfulness
A gentleman wished to sell a rather large estate that he owned. He had an agent write an advertisement telling about the estate. The agent took it to the owner and read it to him. “Read that again,” said the owner. The agent read the description of the estate once more. “I don’t think I will sell after all,” said the gentleman. “I have been looking for an estate like that all of my life, and did not know that I owned it!” In 2 Timothy 3:2, the Bible reveals “that in the last days…men shall be…covetous.” The “covetous” are not content with what they have—they constantly want more. Obviously, discontentment is a huge problem today—creating financial pressures in search of more things to hopefully satisfy, or destroying marriages in search of another spouse to bring happiness! That verse also foretells that men will be “unthankful.” Yes, discontent breeds unthankfulness. The Bible commands, “And having food and raiment let us be therewith content” (1 Timothy 6:8). Contentment fosters thankfulness! The story is told of an older Christian woman in a poorly furnished cabin eating her humble meal. She was asked by a visitor, “Is this all you have, this scanty furniture, this humble home, and this poor food?” With a bright face she replied, “I have all this and Jesus too!” Like the Apostle Paul who said, “I have learned, in whatsoever state I am, therewith to be content” (Philippians 4:11), she had learned true values! Her remarkable expression of gratefulness and thanksgiving sprang from her contentment which obviously was rooted in her personal relationship with Jesus Christ! You have cause to be content if Jesus is with you as Hebrews 13:5 states, “Let your conversation (life style) be without covetousness (always wanting more); and be content with such things as ye have: for he hath said, I will never leave thee, nor forsake thee.” --Submitted by the late Pastor Daniel E. Thirty years ago, Bill Halbfoerster asked me to write a history column for The Home News. We became instant friends. His daughter Gail was a student of mine at the high school. When I visited the paper office, it was a beehive of activity. Bill’s wife Anna and sons Donald, David and Kevin kept the press moving. This writer and fellow writer Al Recker would meet him after council meetings at the diner and conversation flowed freely. To show his dedication, when he returned from the hospital, he called me on a Sunday afternoon with concern in his voice, “Ed, where is the Cement Worker of the Month- did you forget?” I never forgot again! Bill was a keystone with the Bath Lions. If there was a borough or township meeting, there was Bill with his trusty notepad. There he was at the Bath and Northampton Halloween parades, NHS graduations, local church functions, our local Fish and Game clubs, and building dedications. Bill was a serious journalist. Al Recker and I did everything to make him laugh. Bill loved his family, church, Bath, the school district, the Lions, PAIDand OUT!our (Soldsportsmen Separate) organizations. He was respected throughout the area. Pete G. Ossip was a favorite of his readers. Bill would want the column to continue! God bless Bill, a true journalist, and a good friend. I will miss our conversations and friendship.

I met Bill in the early 80s when as secretary of Rosemont Lutheran Church, Bethlehem, I took all of our print needs to The Home News in Bath. Bill was always helpful in planning and selections. The quality of his work and fairness of his prices were second to none. In later times our meetings were at many events he covered writing special event articles for The Home News, another job well done. Over the years through our conversations I gradually learned about all the things Bill did to make his community and surrounding area a

better place. His obituary tells the story of the man who lived life so well to the very end. He truly exemplified love of God, family, and country and I was blessed to have known him.
My memory of Bill By Beth Arcury, AKA “The Tooth Lady”
I would like to think that there isn't a person who ever met Bill that would not have loved him. He was always a kind, generous man with a big heart, and an even bigger captivating "snicker!” I met Bill and his whole family when I took my first dental hygienist job in Bath, right next to The Home News publication office, at Dr. James A Turner's office back in 1975. Then in 1979, Bill became my next-door neighbor for 9 years when I actually lived underneath that dental office! I was always over at his office asking "something" about printing it seems. But, my most favorite memories about Bill was the fact that he never turned me down when I asked him to publish something in The Home News about Dental Hygiene Month (October), National Children's Dental Health Month (February), dental poster contest winners, or any other "news" of interest that I would send him. I would call him up from one of my schools and ask if he would come to cover a dental awards ceremony and he would always show up. He did that for the 24 years that I worked in the NASD. He was always supportive. I will never forget him. He was an incredible man with an incredible legacy. I am thankful that he accomplished so much in his lifetime and I know that Heaven will keep him busy writing even more "news!”
Remembering Bill By Alice Wanamaker
Remembering Bill H. is pretty easy. He left a legacy for all of us to enjoy. Decades of his words; accounts of the world around him, jokes, neighborhood goings-on, births, deaths, and other sorrows along with so much more have been part of our lives thanks to his gift of newsprint which he shared with all of us. I met Bill just ten years ago and I am forever grateful for him, a great colleague, mentor, and friend.
