Obituaries

Annie Marie “Hans” Schweitzer

On Nov. 2, 2023, Annie Marie “Hans” Schweitzer died peacefully at her home in Moore Township. At 101 years old, she lived a long and productive life filled with adventure, community service, travel and family love. Hans, as she was affectionately known, was born in Moore Township to John and Victoria (Skalniak) Dlugos. She was predeceased by her four brothers, John, Frank Sr., Joseph Sr., and Michael Dlugos, as well as her three sisters, Mary Pearsall, Catherine Schweitzer and Helen Dixon. Hans loved helping her community and church. She was a member of the women’s guild, made pierogies for many church functions, and served on the altar guild of Sacred Heart of Jesus

Catholic Church in Bath. On her 100th birthday, Hans was awarded the Apostolic Blessing from the Pope, Holy Father Francis. She was awarded volunteer of the year for outstanding and dedicated service by the Meals on Wheels organization, having delivered client meals for over 37 years. A chartered member of the Moore Township Lions/Lioness Club, she received numerous awards for her 38 years of service and was fondly known for always making nut rolls for the annual holiday bake sale. Hans learned hard work on the family farm and, at the age of 14, she went to work at a cigar factory in Bethlehem. In 1943, Hans went to work for the Bethlehem Steel Co. and worked for the war effort. She retired from Magnetic Windings Co. in Easton, where she wrapped wires for transistors. After retiring in 1980, Hans traveled to all corners of the world, exploring foreign cultures. She always returned to her home, where her heart and husband, Mathias “Matt” was. Matt was a neighbor she grew up with and married in 1948. Taking care of their home, animals, garden and flowers was a mutual love for both during their 65 years together. Hans and Matt traveled and spent time at their cabin in the Thousand Islands, New York, taking family and neighborhood youth to enjoy their summer magic. Hans’ many nieces and nephews, and family members, all have their special memories of how Hans played a part in their lives sharing her love and adventures. Hans will be deeply missed by her family and the Bath community. Services: Her Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Wednesday, Nov. 15, 2023 at 10:30 a.m. in Sacred Heart of Jesus Catholic Church, 210 E. Northampton St., Bath, PA 18014. Friends and relatives are invited to call on Tuesday evening from 6 to 8 p.m. in the George G. Bensing Funeral Home, LLC, 2165 Community Dr., Route 946, in the Village of

Moorestown – Bath, PA 18014. Burial will take place in Sacred Heart Parish Cemetery, Bath. Contributions: In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be offered to Meals on Wheels of The Greater Lehigh Valley, 1302 N. Sherman St., Allentown, PA 18109 and/or Sacred Heart of Jesus Catholic Church.

GWHS Christmas House Tour

Submitted by CAROL BEAR HECKMAN Cut limestone, hand-made bricks and notched logs are some of the building materials used in the historic homes of this area. The Lehigh Valley is rich and diverse in its architecture and the Governor Wolf Historical Society is proud to showcase five unique, private historic homes in its 41st Christmas House Tour on December 1 and 2. This year the tour theme is “Christmas Bells” and the festivities will kick off Friday evening with the Candlelight Tour. This week’s featured private home is a barn.

Welcome to the family barn. The family has had the pleasure of living in this early 1800s Pennsylvania bank barn since 1999. The pegged beam barn originally belonged to the house across the street and was built by the Teel family, for whom the road is named. Former owners improved many areas when they moved into the barn in 1986. The current owners are continuing that process. In 2007, they rebuilt the entire back deck that runs the length of the barn. At one time, below this side, it was known as the barnyard for animals. The original rafters and large ancient

beams that were removed from the side were all re-purposed. The entire front wall was opened and rebuilt from scratch. It was assembled flat on the front yard and then raised in the traditional barn-raising style by only four people using ancient techniques. The living room, with its 16inch wide plank floors and open staircase, is two stories high. It was constructed with pegged beams that are identified with Roman numerals. The inside focuses on space and natural light and the amazing workmanship of that era. The current family has certainly enjoyed preserving the craftsmanship and adding their own story to this historic home. Christmas decorations will be done by the family (rumor has it that some family members did decorations in the White House previously). Ticket tour booklets will have sketches and descriptions of each of the nine homes and buildings open for the tour as well as a map and written directions. Saturday tour ticket booklets go on sale on November 10 at Bath Drug on

Walnut Street in Bath, S Seem Antiques on Chestnut Street in Bath, Miller Ace Hardware on Route 329 in Northampton, Mycalyn Florals on Main Street in Nazareth and the Snow Goose Gallery on Main Street in Bethlehem. Advance tickets are $25, and tickets purchased the day of the tour are $30. The tour booklet also gains you free admission into the two-day holiday craft festival at the Governor Wolf Historical Society’s site. The Friday Candlelight Tour is a private showing of the homes starting at 5:30 p.m. on December 1 for the

Submitted by ERIN FERGUSON Local author Erin Rafanello Ferguson brings her children’s book, “Earl: The Christmas Tree Spider,” to the Lehigh Valley to share with you all. Earl is a little spider who is looking for a home during the holiday season. He finds a home in a Christmas tree that gets cut down by a family to use for the holiday season. Though he is at first scared of the family and his new surroundings, Earl soon realizes how much he yearns to be accepted by them, sharing in their love and laughter, and wishes to become a part of their family. Earl decides to write Santa Claus a letter, “….I know I am a spider and they are not, do you think they would accept me, could we give it a shot….”, asking him if he could make Earl’s wish come true of a family to call his own. On Christmas morning little Earl is accepted into the family as one of their own. This story takes you on Earl’s

mas has to offer, including Santa Claus, and is a story that is sure to resonate with its readers for years to come. It was a personal experience that inspired Ferguson to write Earl’s story, “After cutting down live Christmas trees for a few years from Christmas tree farms, we noticed spiders in our tree. I decided to name one of the spiders Earl to soften the blow of these little unwelcome guests. The story came alive and my daughters, husband, and I laughed about Earl all season long. He became a part of our family and a Christmas tradition was born in “Earl: The Christmas Tree Spider.” An adorable tale preaching the value of love and acceptance, “Earl: The Christmas Tree Spider” serves as a perfect gift for younger readers this holiday season. You can purchase a copy of Earl at The Moravian Book Shop, Bethlehem, Barnes & Noble at the Promenade Shops, Saucon Valley, or Barnes & Noble in Easton, Southmont Way. You can also or-

VETERANS DAY 2023 In Memory and Honor…

During the past year, we have had the privilege of serving the families of Veterans. We are honored to be of service to them in their time of need, just as their loved one was there in our time of need. On Veteran’s Day, we pay tribute to those who served our country in the name of Freedom, the same Freedom that allows us to serve them. Our prayers are with all the Veterans, their families, and with the brave men and women serving our country today. We also wish to thank those from our area’s veteran service groups who volunteer their time in honor guards and firing squads bestowing the greatest honor for their deceased comrades. Floyd W. plant,” added Councilman Trevor Stone. “He is an outstanding young man.” In other news, council rejected a motion to place 18 to 25 parking meters on Main Street between Keichel Court and Richard Paul Alley. A total cost of $9,300 to $12,900 was estimated for the meters, not including installation. In total, meters in the borough bring in roughly $250 per week. “Does the community really feel the need for a parking meter at that expense?” asked Councilwoman Judy Haldeman. “Who is this really benefiting?” wondered Stone. “I’m not really sure this is benefitting the business owners.” He worried that adding meters would increase long-term parking in nearby parking lots. Instead, he suggested 15-minute parking signs.

Councilman Glassic was also not in favor of adding meters to Main Street, citing the high cost and low return on investment. “[This is] potentially a 20-year return on investment,” he calculated. Councilman Anthony Lopsonzski, Sr. however, supported the idea of metered parking. “What the parking meter is designed to do is to change the occupancy of the parking space after one hour…it guarantees that the space will be open eventually,” he said. “There are several new businesses in there that are struggling…the meters were intended to help defray this situation.” Despite this, council voted to reject the meters. In other news, Ryan Homes, the developer currently constructing the Northampton Crossings townhomes development, approached council for a temporary “No Parking” area along West Alley to store building materials. This would be in effect until the project's estimat-

ed completion in spring 2024. Council was largely not in favor of this request due to the disruption it would cause current residents. Council worried that materials could sit there for a prolonged period of time. “There are already complaints on parking there,” said Councilwoman Judy Kutzler. “They have an open space area. Why can’t they use that?” Council rejected the request, asking the developer to present alternative solutions. Finally, a representative from Northampton County Executive Lamont McClure’s office presented the borough with a check from the 2023 CDBG (Community Development Block Grant) program for $70,000. This funding will be used for the future Canal Street sewer improvement project. Before ending the meeting, council reminded residents to pay their respects to Northampton’s hometown heroes on Sunday, November 12 at 2 p.m. during the annual hometown

Nazareth native serves aboard guidedNazareth Missile destroyer in the Red Sea Council

By Alvin Plexico, Navy Office of Community Outreach Lt. Kenneth Shook, a native of Nazareth, serves aboard USS Carney, currently deployed to the U.S. 5th Fleet area of operations. Shook was aboard the ship on October 19, when the crew of Carney shot down multiple landattack cruise missiles and un-

manned aerial drones launched by Houthi forces in Yemen while the ship was operating in the northern Red Sea. The missiles and drones were believed to be headed toward Israel when Carney intercepted them. “Throughout the engagement, I was either supporting various watch standers in the Combat

Information Center or in the pilot house, standing watch as the Tactical Action Officer directing the engagements or coordinating troubleshooting efforts for multiple weapon systems to keep Carney in the fight,” said Shook. The engagement lasted several hours and made news worldwide. According to Cmdr. Jeremy Robertson, Carney’s commanding officer, crewmembers like Shook made all the difference. “I’m extremely proud of the Carney team,” Robertson said. “Every member of the crew performed exactly what we have been training to do and kept Carney engaged throughout the fight during this act.” “Supporting the mission means saving lives, limiting the enemy’s effectiveness and ensuring the safety of our nation’s interests,” said Shook. Arleigh Burke-class destroyers such as Carney are outfitted with the world’s most sophisticated weaponry systems. They further strengthen the U.S. Navy’s contribution to national security by

tions. Residents at Traditions of Hanover engage in intergenerational activities that connect them to children and young adults. “Our intergenerational programming allows our residents to share their wisdom and perspective with someone younger, in turn, they are also gaining new skills and insight too,” Marketing Director Megan Sedlock said. Traditions of Hanover cultivates these intergenerational friendships through partnerships with community centers, school groups, and college internships. During the summer, children attending Hanover Township Community Center’s summer camp program teamed up with residents for an exciting game of bocce. The residents happily shared their knowledge of the game and gave their eager teammates tips on the sport, from the proper grip to how to knock an opponent’s ball away. “With each game the children grew excited as their new bocce skills improved. Seeing the connections being made that day made the event that much more fun. Opportunities like this reinforce why these intergenerational relationships are so important to us as a community,” Sedlock said. Resident Bea Finkbeiner recently volunteered as a guest reader for a preschool class at Hanover Township Community Center. As a great-grandmother, she has narrated countless stories over many generations and relished the opportunity to share her talents with a new group of children. “I like to use different voices for the characters in the stories, and ask questions of the children as I read,” she said. “We all had a good time, and it was good for me to be with the children. They appreciated having a guest storyteller, too.” Conversely, children and young adults also benefit from these unique friendships, which may already exist within their families, such as a bond between their grandparents or older relatives or through professional interactions. These benefits include enhancing social skills, providing stability, and influencing career choices. Spencer Gross, marketing associate, completed two internships at Traditions of Hanover while attending Moravian University before coming on

full-time. Her internships fostered unlikely friendships that left lasting impressions, giving her invaluable knowledge on the importance of being an advocate for seniors. “Working with the residents is very rewarding because they are able to provide me with wisdom that I can carry with me throughout different life experiences,” she said. “It’s a wonderful feeling being surrounded by joy, laughter and smiling faces each day and although they are residents of our community, they are my family.”

Veterans Day Events in Northampton County

Submitted by BRITTNEY WAYLEN Northampton County Executive Lamont G. McClure and the County’s Veterans Affairs Division encourage residents to remember the importance of Veterans Day. World War I, known at the time as “The Great War,” officially ended when the Treaty of Versailles was signed on June 28, 1919, at the Palace of Versailles in France. However, fighting ceased seven months earlier when an armistice, or temporary cessation of hostilities, between the Allied nations and Germany went into effect on the eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month. Every year, November 11 is a time to pause and reflect on those who have died in our nation’s wars and is a reminder to honor, respect and remember the men and women who have served this incredible country and made the ultimate sacrifice. The Northampton County Veterans Affairs is providing a list of scheduled events to honor local veterans and all those serving our country and help keep the memory of our fallen military service members alive. • Wednesday, November 8 from 6 to 7 p.m.- Nazareth Memorial Library Veterans Day Celebration • Friday, November 10 at 1 p.m.- Veterans Day Parade in Wilson Borough on Washington Boulevard at the five war memorials between South 17th and South 21st streets • Saturday, November 11 at 9 a.m.- A Salute to Our Veterans at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Catholic Cemetery in Roseto • Saturday, November 11 Continued on page 16
