State Police investigating Fatal wrong-way crash on Route 22

By HOME NEWS STAFF The Pennsylvania State Police Troop M Patrol Unit is currently investigating a fatal motor vehicle crash that occurred on State Route 22. On Thursday, October 5 at approximately 10:41 a.m., Troopers were dispatched to State Route 22 eastbound at the State Route 33 interchange for the report of a motor vehicle crash. Upon arrival, Troopers determined two pickup trucks and a Honda Civic were involved in the crash. John Woodburn, a 22-yearold man from Bethlehem, was driving the Honda Civic and was pronounced deceased by the

Northampton County Coroner at the scene. The operators of the two pickup trucks, a 58-year-old male from Summit Hill driving a red Chevrolet Silverado and a 76-year-old male from Wind Gap driving a black Chevrolet Silverado, were transported to St. Luke’s Anderson Campus for their injuries. Upon further investigation it was determined that the red Chevrolet Silverado was traveling southbound, on State Route 33 northbound and exited the ramp from State Route 22 eastbound to State Route 33 northbound, traveling in the wrong direction.

Anyone who may have observed the red Chevrolet Silverado traveling prior to the crash or have video of the vehicle traveling in the wrong direction is asked to contact the Pennsylvania State Police Bethlehem Station at 610861-2026 and reference Incident Number PA2023-1306267. Assisting at the scene were: Troop M Forensic Services Unit (F.S.U.), Troop M Collision Analysis Reconstruction Specialist Unit (C.A.R.S.), Northampton County Coroner, Bethlehem Township Fire Department, Nancy Run Fire Department and Fast Lane Towing.

Moore Township Supervisors Deny zoning agreement with Chapman Borough Keith Fegely By ED PANY Mr. Keith Fegely was raised in Fullerton, graduating from Whitehall High School in 1995. He recalled, “I was a student at Lehigh Vocational Tech in the print shop. Our teacher Mr. Thomas Heil was a role model for our students.” Keith’s first employer was Quick Printing in Allentown and his salary was $6.20 an hour. He started his 23-year cement odyssey at La Farge, now Holcim, on July 2, 2001 working on the tire deck at a wage of $10.20 an hour. Mr. Fegely’s employment journey continued by working in the Pack House for 10 years, then transferring to the unloading station operating a front loader, moving tons of stone and material each day. Today he works in the maintenance department as a lubrication tech with partner Brian Schmall. Keith said, “We work through-

out the plant seeing that the equipment works in a safe and efficient manner.” Jack Heffelfinger and Dave Tomasic are former employees who shared their vast knowledge of the plant with Keith and his fellow employees. Keith enjoys his job each day, saying, “It gives me great satisfaction keeping the equipment in working order.” He has a great respect for the history of the plant, which has been part of Cementon for 125 years. Keith works on classic automobiles and spends his spare time driving his sleek ATV. Mr. Fegely and his wife Karen are proud of children Kyla, Molly, Cassy and Caden. The friendly family resides in the Northampton Area School District. Keith is a friendly and dedicated cement worker and we wish him and all our friends at Holcim a safe and prosperous year.

By SAVANNAH BROWN The Moore Township Board of Supervisors met Tuesday, October 3 with a busy agenda. First, the board granted a one-year extension to Aqua Pa.-Evanwood to record their land development plan based on conditional approval granted back in September 2021. The board also approved a request for a speed study for Lilly Hill Road due to PennDOT’s criteria for determining the speed limit being ambiguous. The applicant whose driveway is on Lilly Hill Road expressed that PennDOT’s classifications could set the speed limit from 35 to 55 miles per hour; however, the applicant stated that the road is a one-way dirt road that does not provide adequate sight distance for it to be marked as a 55-mph speed limit. Supervisors directed the engineer to conduct the speed study consistent with what has

been done in the past, which would also require the applicant to pay for the study. Next, Police Chief Gary West was given the go ahead from the board to reserve an additional police vehicle from Koch 33, which will need to be added to the 2024 budget. Koch 33’s next shipment of vehicles will be coming in December, but the township will not see the vehicle until next spring. The reserve will allow the township to take advantage of a lower cost due to the vehicles’ price increasing by $4-6,000 next year and does not cost anything at this time. Chief West reported that for the month of September, the police department had 290 total incidents with 12 written and verbal warnings issued, 40 traffic citations issued, seven arrests (three for DUI, one for criminal mischief, one for a PFA violation that resulted in possession of narcotics,

and one other for possession of narcotics), one non-traffic citation for a dog running at large, three reportable accidents, and two non-reportable accidents. Additionally, for the month of September, Fire Police Captain Jason Harhart reported that the Klecknersville Rangers Vol. Fire Co. responded to 67 ambulance calls and 36 fire calls, which accounted for four fires, two motor vehicle accidents, two fire police, three automatic fire alarms, seven ambulance assists, three carbon monoxide alarms, Continued on page 5

The Honey Bear

Fall officially began on Saturday, September 23, making the raw and cold day seem appropriate. The occasion also signaled the seasonable transition from cold soda, summer ades and iced tea to hot chocolate,

coffee and hot tea with honey. The almost-spent, little bearshaped honey dispenser has been stored upside-down and patiently waiting since sometime last spring to again adorn the kitchen table, allowing a child to ponder the upended teddy bear. The little bear stands on his

three wires down, two trees down, one spill, seven mutual aid calls with Bath for three motor vehicle accidents, two fire alarms, one fire, and one fire police, one mutual aid call with Bushkill Township for a search and rescue, and one mutual aid call with Lehigh Township for a fire. Following, the board approved direction for the manager to advertise a Public Works position available to hire a replacement for a current employee that is set to retire this month. Public Works Director Craig Hoffman also announced that leaf collection will tentatively start on Tuesday, October 31 and will continue into December. Supervisors also approved the Recreation Commission’s request for the baseball and softball teams to have a campfire at the park with the Klecknersville Rangers on site, pending insurance approval. Chairperson Jodi Hartzell assured the board that it will be a campfire rather than a bonfire, there will be no alcohol because it will be a kid’s event, and the baseball commissioner will be responsible for cleanup. In other news, the board approved an open space appraisal on West Beersville Road at a value of $112,000 for a 9.3acre parcel of land, which is higher than usual due to the land’s features. Under Township Engineer Kevin Horvath’s report, he noted that he found alternate BMPs that would help with sediment erosion as part of the township’s MS4 projects. His suggestions included possibly widening and flattening

the swale behind the Klecknersville Rangers Vol. Fire Co. building and planting a vegetation mix at the Recreation Center that would reduce costs and maintenance. Per the supervisor’s direction from last month’s meeting, Horvath also proposed solutions for the drainage issue on Delps Road, which will cost approximately $7,000 in materials to construct the improvements and the Public Works Department will perform the work. The board authorized Hoffman to acquire the materials for the repairs. Next, Township Solicitor David M. Backenstoe presented a request from Chapman Borough to enter into an agreement that would allow the township’s zoning officer to provide services to the borough, similar to how the township also provides police

and snow plowing services. However, Chapman Borough Council chose to base their zoning ordinances off of Nazareth Borough instead of Moore Township, which would require the township’s zoning officer to learn an entirely new set of ordinances, and the supervisors felt that this was not feasible. Chapman Borough Council prematurely adopted an ordinance identifying Moore Township’s zoning officer as their own without making a formal request and did not attend the meeting, thus prompting the board to deny the request. Following, the board approved a motion for Backenstoe to draft a repeal of the township’s amusement tax that was adopted in 1995 due to its enforcement becoming burdensome for the township. NORTHAMPTON AREA Northampton Borough Council discusses Traffic safety concerns By KERI LINDENMUTH With road work continuing throughout the Borough of Northampton, namely the Route 329 Bridge over the Lehigh River, Northampton Borough council members discussed several traffic safety concerns during their October 5 meeting. Resident Jeff Kreps, of 21st

Street, said drivers are cutting through Station Alley to avoid Route 329 traffic. In one rush hour period, over 30 cars went through the alley’s stop sign, he counted. Kreps said he put up temporary construction speed bumps to keep cars from speeding in the area where many neighborhood

children play. While they worked, Kreps said he removed them after discussing with borough police. “I’m worried about people getting hit,” he explained. It was requested that an officer observe the area. “I know the [police] chief has been busy working on that,” said Councilman Kenneth Hall, who lives near the area. He said the bridge work and UGI road closures have exacerbated the issue. “Everybody gets flustered, and then you’re driving down oneway streets.” Other councilmembers echoed concerns over traffic boroughwide. “I’ve been experiencing the same flythroughs on 10th Street,” said Councilman Ronald Glassic. However, he added that an increased police presence has stopped a majority of the speeders. “I was amazed…they know there is a presence…people don’t want to get pulled over. I want to commend the chief.” Councilwoman Bonnie Almond has also noticed increased dangers due to the excess traffic in the area of Route 329. Not only are cars speeding, she said, but using turning lanes to cut in front of waiting traffic. She added that standstill traffic is also blocking intersections. She hoped bringing police awareness to the issue would help alleviate some of the bad behavior. In other news, Councilwoman Judy Haldeman asked for council support for a holiday decorating contest for borough businesses. Perhaps the winner, she said, could light the borough Christmas tree. “See if we can have some fun with making Main Street look very festive,” she said.

high school volunteer club. These posts will then be worked into a website. With the annual Jack Frost Parade on Thursday, October 19 at 7 p.m., the next council meeting will be Wednesday, October 18.

Council supported her idea to help bring more awareness to borough businesses. Mayor Tony Pristash also voiced support for the effort. “I think it’s a fantastic idea,” he said. He has been decorating his store window for over two decades. “It’s just a great feeling to see how people respond to it. More color in this town is all the better.” A judging committee will be established. Finally, it was announced that the borough will be launching an online program called “Hometown Hero of the Day” on social media in 2024, recognizing the 400-plus hometown heroes whose photos hang on the borough’s lamppost banners. There will be no cost to the borough for this effort, which will be spearheaded by junior council member Mason Smokenack and the

Counterfeit at Longhorn Steakhouse On October 6 at 12:30 p.m., the CRPD responded to Longhorn Steakhouse in Lower Nazareth Township for a report of a counterfeit $50 bill being used. Upon police arrival, a Longhorn employee said 22-year-old Armin Acevedo had just left the premises. Police then searched the parking lot and found Acevedo walking out of Chick-fil-A. Acevedo was charged with two counts of: Forgery (felony 2) and attempted theft by deception (misdemeanor 1). Acevedo was arraigned by Magistrate Capobianco and given bail of $5,000, which he failed to post and was subsequently transported to Northampton County Prison.
