Bath Museum adopts New logo in honor of 20th anniversary

By ANNEMARIE HARTZELL September marked the 20th anniversary of the founding of the Bath Museum. On Sept. 20, 2000, the Bath Museum opened its doors for the first time through the hard work of Marjorie Rehrig, Agnes Melinsky, and Evelyn Hartzell. Over two decades later,

their vision for a small Memory Room in the old school building evolved into the modern museum on South Walnut Street that we have today. In honor of the 20th anniversary, the Bath Museum has adopted a new logo that reflects its commitment to unlock treasures from Bath's history.

Township receives Generous donation Of a new roof for Edelman Schoolhouse

By JASON KAMERY The Moore Township Board of Supervisors met at 5:30 p.m. on October 6 at the Recreation Center. At the previous meeting, the Moore Township Board of Supervisors voted on a new roof for Edelman Schoolhouse but plans changed as Speciality Roofs made a generous donation toward the roof. “At the last meeting we had brought up the roof and had to approve someone to do the roof,” Richard Gable, member of the Board of Supervisors, said. “In the meantime, something neat happened. We had someone who specializes in slate roofs agree to put a slate roof on the school at no charge for us, which is a $25,000 donation.” The township had 16 volunteers come out to the school to prepare the roof. The township has also ordered the slate roof and is waiting for the order to come in. “Thank you to all the volunteers that came out and helped, it was a big undertaking,” Gable

said. “We did mostly everything in one day.” The Public Works Department has started preparations to put in a picnic pad by the kiosk and sidewalk of Schiavone Park. At Appalachian Park, they are preparing the site for a mini-pavilion. They have also started the process of preparing the equipment for township-wide leaf pickup. The Recreation Commission is still working out details of where they plan to place a volleyball court. The Land and Environmental Protection Board unanimously recommended the township Board of Supervisors move forward on the Stacy and Patricia Harrison Open Space application. The Board of Supervisors voted 2-0 in favor of continuing the application process for the property. The township will hold Trunk or Treat on October 24 at the recreation fields. The next Moore Township Board of Supervisors meeting will be held at 7 p.m. on November 5 via Zoom.

Fire and EMS Companies in 138th District Awarded COVID-19 Grants

submitted by ANDY BRIGGS Ten fire and EMS companies in the 138th Legislative District were awarded a one-time state grant to assist with extra expenses resulting from the COVID-19 public health emergency, according to Rep. Marcia Hahn (RNorthampton).

A total of $50 million was made available through the Office of State Fire Commissioner to provide direct financial relief to first responders in Pennsylvania impacted by the pandemic. These funds are to be used to supplement operational expenses incurred by the lack of opportu-

nities for fundraising and inability to create revenue due to compliance with measures to prevent the spread of COVID-19. “We are grateful to these groups for their dedicated service to our communities, especially Continued on page 8

October means Halloween, Pumpkins, and fall-delights Submitted by PAUL PRASS Americans spend big every year on fall festivities, from costumes to candy to other spooky trappings. And who can forget the star of fall, the pumpkin? Almost 1-in-2 Americans will carve a Jack O’Lantern this year (with more digging into a delicious pump-

kin pie or sipping on a pumpkin spice latte.) For many Americans, pumpkins are not just a seasonal treat, but a way of life and how they make a living. Over 1.5 billion pounds of pumpkin are produced in the US, on over 15,214 farms. With those whopping numbers, we set out to find the states who grow the most pumpkins and other fun, festive facts.

Gab Over by Pete The Fence G. Ossip Time keeps tickin’ on and we’re creeping closer to Halloween already. The surrounding boroughs and townships are gearin’ up for trick or treat

and festive events like Trunk or Treats. I got word that Chapman Borough decided to have their trick or treat this year, it’s set for Friday, Oct. 30 from 6 to 7 p.m. Nazareth’s Fall Festival is comin’ up soon too, hopefully they’ll have nice weather. Bath Legion had their soft opening on Oct. 12 and is gonna be open to league

members, I’m waiting for more word on that. I also heard that bingo’s gonna be starting up again at the Northampton Community Center, more info on that in our next issue...Before we know it it’ll be Thanksgiving and Shop Small Saturday, although everyday should be Shop Small, right? And then Christmas time can you believe it? Looks like some townships

and boroughs are going to carry on with their tree lightings. I saw that Justin Walker is doin’ his annual Toys for Tots collection, the big FedEx trailer is at Klecknersville Rangers. They’ll start taking donations there on October 18 from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. and every Sunday until mid December. Last year with the help of many, they collected 1,722 toys for less fortunate kids around the region, how fantastic is that? Consider donating this year to help them top last year’s number...Keep an eye out next week for our auto supplement, and we’re gonna be comin’ out a day early next week just a heads up. Welp, that’s all she wrote, as always there’s so much to do and so little time. Have another great week and cya next time.

Home Improvement 6 home improvement ideas for fall

courtesy of windowsonwashington.net Fall is the perfect time to tackle almost any home improve-

ment project: you are well-rested after your summer holiday, the weather is pleasant and, with the summer heat waves over, you

can finally get organized. More importantly, there are some home improvement projects that should be done during fall. Read on to find the must-do list that any homeowner must check off before the winter chill sets in.

Get your mind in the gutter Cleaning your gutters may not be the most pleasant thing to do, but it is a necessity. Gutters divert hundreds of gallons of water away from your home. With the increased volume of leaves coming down in fall, gutters are at real risk of clogging, and this can

lead to water damage to your roof and exterior of your home in addition to flooding your basement. So, the first home improvement project to tackle this fall should be cleaning your gutters and installing gutter guards to protect them from additional debris, ensuring there will be less work to do next year.

Inspect your roof Make sure your home stays warm and dry during winter with a solid roof. Stay ahead of any roof trouble and inspect it thoroughly or, better yet, hire a professional to do it. Check that your roof has not sprung any leaks during the past year, and replace any shingles that are cracked, missing or curling. Regular inspections and maintenance of your roof will help prolong its life. If your roof does need major repairs or replacements, consider gathering multiple estimates from reputable contractors. Give your windows a thorough check-up Heat leakage from windows can have a severe impact on your energy bills during the cooler seasons. It is no wonder that savvy home owners always make it a point to check on their windows during fall, before the cold weather kicks in.

A quick windows check-up always contains: Making sure the locks are functioning properly Inspecting the weather stripping – start with the sides of your window sash and check if the stripping is intact in the place where the frame meets the sash. Next, tilt the sash and check the weather stripping on its inside. If they are both intact, you’re good to go! Checking the sealant or caulk to make sure it doesn’t need to be touched up. Prepare your deck and patio for winter Clean your patio furniture thoroughly before putting it away for the winter. Empty the dirt in any decorative clay or ceramic pots – otherwise it can freeze and crack the pots. More importantly, check for any cracks or dents in your deck or patio. If there are any, you should fix them as a matter of priority. Any small problem you have now will grow bigger during the cold season, especially if water gets into the cracks and freezes. Inspect your heating system and chimneys Whatever heating system you are using, now is the perfect time to get it checked. Take the opportunity to also inspect any smoke and fire detectors, carbon monoxide detectors. If you plan to use your fireplace, the chimney must be inspected by a professional. You

Moore Township Leaf Collection Program The Moore Township leaf collection program will begin on or about the week of October 26th and will continue for the next eight weeks (depending on conditions). Actual collection will commence when a sufficient amount of leaves have fallen to warrant dispatching the collection equipment. With the continuing increase in volume of leaves it has become impossible to guarantee a specific pick-up day for any one location. There will be multiple trips through neighborhoods for the duration of the collection program; therefore, if the leaves are not in place when the crew goes by, they will be picked up on the next rotation. This schedule is subject to inclement weather, mechanical breakdowns, and Township Emergencies making it necessary to temporarily delay pick-up. THE FOLLOWING GUIDELINES MUST BE FOLLOWED 1. Leaves cannot be collected on private roads. 2. LEAVES ONLY shall be raked to the edge of the roadway. 3. Leaf piles shall be kept off the roadways. 4. Leaf piles must be free of sticks and other foreign materials. THE PUBLIC WORKS CREW MAY REFUSE TO PICK-UP ANY LEAF PILE IF INAPPROPRIATE MATERIAL IS FOUND WITHIN THE PILE OR IF THE ABOVE RULES ARE NOT FOLLOWED. Moore Township residents are welcome to bring leaves and brush to the Brush and Leaf Recycling Area located to the east side of the Public Works Building Monday through Saturday during daylight hours.

should also ensure it is clean and in perfect working condition. Improperly functioning heating systems and clogged chimneys are some of the most common fire hazards in US homes during winter.

Add a fresh coat of paint The weather is still warm without being oppressive, so now is the perfect time to redo the outside (and maybe even the inside) of your home with a fresh coat of paint. With the milder fall temperatures, you will be able to keep your windows open to get rid of the fumes quickly.

Real Estate Rental Scams – COVID

Submitted by STEVE GARDNER These days, because of COVID-19, lots of financial transactions that used to take place in person now happen virtually. This creates an opportunity for scammers to pose as legitimate operators and steal people’s money. One place this is happening more often is in real estate – specifically fake home rentals. Scammers take pictures from legitimate home rental offers and create their own fake rental listings. The rentals are often offered for well below market price and the crooks use the coronavirus as a reason why a tour and inperson meeting aren’t possible. Only after the victim sends their deposit and shows up at someone else’s home, do they find out it is a scam. Be suspicious of any rental where you can’t physically visit the space and make sure you’re using secure and trusted websites when looking for a home rental.

Creative Corner Stories From My Heart

by Cynthia DeLuca

The Enchanted Weeping Willow

A few days ago, I drove slowly by my childhood home, reminiscing about a simpler time: a time without the hustle and bustle, a time without fear, and a time without a care in the world. The house still looked the same, although a different color and smaller than I remembered. The barn was the same; it just looked its age. Our orchard, where we climbed trees and sometimes ate apples with an occasional worm, was totally wiped off the earth. The egg house where we weighed and candled eggs was in surprisingly good shape, but the old smokehouse, where I sometimes played, was only half standing. I also noticed the pear tree that produced the biggest and most delicious pears was missing. Just thinking of those pears, made my mouth water. I should note that the pear tree grew next to the outhouse. That might explain the size and great taste! However, I have managed to push the memory of the outhouse, and the cold seat in winter, way back in my mind! Although, Mom did have it looking beautiful with a picture and a few magazines. As I scanned the lower part of the yard, I noticed the outdoor fireplace where Mom grilled hot dogs and hamburgers, was still standing. Then, something caught my eye and prompted a feeling of emptiness. I realized that my favorite place, a place where I read, acted out stories, and could be anyone or anything I wanted to be, was gone. I wondered what happened to it. Dad loved to read! I can still see him sitting in his chair after a hard day with an open Lonesome Dove book. Dad also loved to go to auctions, where he would bid and sometimes buy a box lot or two, filled with many contents. Sometimes, there would be books appropriate for me to read, and read them I did! One time there were two Nancy Drew books! I read them both within a couple of days. Dad made a real effort to look for box lots that had books in them. I always looked forward to seeing the surprises he brought home. Thank you, Dad, who now resides in heaven, for inspiring me and providing me with countless books that took me on adventures, stories that made me laugh, and stories that made me cry. But, most of all, stories that made me believe that I really could be anyone and anything I wanted to be. During the summer, I would hurry to get my

Creative Corner Continued from page 10 chores done, then head down to the weeping willow tree, with the long branches holding slender, soft leaves. One summer, I asked Dad not to cut the branches, which were already quite long. He agreed, and the enchanting weeping willow took on a new look for me. As I walked out the door with my book, Mom called me back and gave me an old blanket and pillow to use under my tree. I smiled and ran down the little hill, past the peony bush, and through the branches. I shook the blanket like Mom did when she was putting new sheets on my bed, then plopped the pillow down and got comfortable. It felt like I was sitting on a magic carpet. In the afternoon, and every afternoon that summer, I entered through the branches, to a place just for me. Each book took me on a new adventure and places I could only dream about. I acted out parts of my favorite stories, danced around the branches, sang songs, and daydreamed about living in a castle; and even wore my blanket like a queen's robe. Sometimes, I would drift off to sleep while reading and wake up to the sound of soft breezes meandering through feather-like branches. It was very peaceful and unique. The weeping willow became a part of me that summer and for many summers to come. As my love of reading grew, so did my love of the willow. I often found myself going under the branches when I wanted to think, when I was bullied, or when I wanted to cry. It was a place that always made me feel better. Just thinking about it now brings back lovely memories that tickle my heart. The weeping willow was my enchanted place. Being under the branches allowed me a special place where I could be me.
