Purring in Cats (pets.webmd.com)
Even though purring takes energy, many cats purr when they get hurt or are in pain. So what makes the effort worth it? It might simply be a way for a cat to soothe itself, like a child sucks their thumb to feel better. But some research suggests that purring actually helps cats get better faster. The low frequency of purrs causes a series of related

vibrations within their body that can: •Heal bones and wounds •Build muscle and repair tendons •Ease breathing •Lessen pain and photo by Abby Groff swelling This might explain why cats are able to survive falls from high places and tend to have fewer complications after surgeries than dogs.

Why Do Dogs’ Feet Smell Like Popcorn? (www.huffingtonpost.com) The corn chip odor — which some human noses interpret as more of a popcorn scent — is a byproduct of yeast and bacteria, Dr. Robert J. Silver, a Coloradobased veterinarian, told The Huffington Post. Pseudomonas and proteus are the two types of natural bacteria that make their way from soil or water into the crevices of a paw, and it’s the former that gives your pet that snack food smell. While the smell is perfectly normal, Silver said that it can sometimes be a sign of infection. If your pooch is excessively licking his feet, his paws are greasy or there is inflammation in the webbed part between his toes, you might want to take a trip to the vet. (By the way: It’s a normal behavior for dogs to lick their paws — it’s how they self-clean and remember where they’ve been throughout the day. Excessive is the keyword.) If An Unattended Service Dog Approaches You, This Is What You Must Do By Amber King (www.iheartdogs.com) Most people know by now what to do when they see a service dog–leave it be. Service dogs have important jobs to do, and petting, talking, or otherwise trying to get their attention will distract them from whatever service they’re trained to perform. But what happens when a service dog approaches you without their handler? Some people assume the dog is neglecting their duties by wandering away from their handler, and other people that don’t like dogs get annoyed by a service animal’s attention. One woman’s story is setting the record straight about the right way to react. Back in June, a PSA post about service dogs started circulating the Internet. Twenty-year-old Tessa Connaughton turned to Tumblr to share an experience she had with her service dog named Raider. It was eventually passed around Twitter where it got even more attention. Tessa first got Raider two and a half years ago to help with her autism. When she was later diagnosed with epilepsy, she started training him
8
to help during her seizures. One day when out shopping, Tessa tripped and fell down. She was unharmed, but one of the tasks she trained Raider to do is run off and find an adult when she has a seizure. When Raider saw his owner fall to the ground, he assumed she was having a seizure. He ran off to do exactly what he was trained to do. Raider found a woman nearby and tried to get her attention. Not understanding the dog’s intentions, the woman quickly got annoyed. She tried swatting the dog and telling him to go away. It was at this point that Tessa picked herself up and tracked down her service dog. She assured Raider she was okay, and the pair quickly left the annoyed woman alone. But after the incident was over, Tessa started thinking about what would have happened if she was actually in trouble and needed human help. She decided to share her experience in hopes of helping other people in real emergency situations. She explained that many service dogs are trained to leave their handlers’ sides to look
The Home News 2018 Pet Supplement || AUGUST 23, 2018
for emergency help. In many cases, it’s a life or death situation, and how a person responds to the dog is extremely important. Tessa wrote in her post that instead of ignoring or getting annoyed at the dog, the right thing to do is follow them. She wrote, “If what’s-his-face could understand that Lassie wanted him to go to the well, you can figure out that a dog in a vest proclaiming it’s a service dog wants you to follow him.” Since it first caught people’s attention, Tessa’s message has been shared on Twitter over 160,000 times. It started a conversation that revealed a lot of people, even people who like dogs, wouldn’t know what to do if they encountered a service dog with no one on the other end of their leash. The Today show also looked into the issue and talked to a dog trainer about service animals that are trained to seek out human help. She said that while a service is dog is trained to never jump or bark, they’ll try getting a person’s attention by nudging them with their nose. When they do that, they’re not looking for any kind of specific cue from the person, their intention is to get the person to follow them. If this happens to you, remember Tessa’s story and follow that service dog to wherever it’s trying to take you. You could end up helping someone in serious need.

Top 4 Best Freshwater Aquarium Fish For Beginners (homeaquaria.com)
Cold Water Freshwater Aquarium A cold-water aquarium keeps the water at room temperature. You should still include a filtration system. Additionally you should have a light for the tank. These help promote health in your fish. If you’ve decided on keeping a cold-water fish tank, here are some ideas for beginners. 1. Goldfish Goldfish come in many varieties of sizes and colors. Many people love the fancier varieties with bubbly heads and fanned tails. Goldfish are great for beginners who have an unheated aquarium. These fish prefer temperatures between 62-74 degrees Fahrenheit. Goldfish tend to be messy eaters, so be sure to change 10 percent of the water each week. Treating the water with a dechlorinator is also a good idea. 2. Bloodfin Tetras These small fish are recognized by their silver
bodies and striking red fins. These are extremely hardy fish. In some aquariums they live up to 10 years. They are an active fish that is always on the move. These fish work well in temperatures that range from 64 to 82 degrees Fahrenheit. This is a peaceful fish, but it prefers to live in a group. You will enjoy seeing the group move together through the aquarium. If you only have one, it tends to be shy. Heated Freshwater Aquarium Fish Some aquarists prefer to use heated tanks simply because of the varieties that it offers. A heated tank allows you to keep a wider variety of tropical fish. The temperature typically ranges from 72 to 82 degrees Fahrenheit. 1. Danios These small fish are a great first fish. When first starting up a tank, you need to test the water.

Because these fish are hardy and do well in a variety of conditions, they are a perfect first choice. Danios are active and small. Typically, they prefer to be in a group near the surface of the water. Most have bright horizontal stripes that grab your attention as they zoom around the top. They are not picky eaters and do well with flake fish food. 2. Black Molly The Black Molly is a peaceful fish. It is a good choice if you want a community tank with several types of fish. One of the advantages of choosing this fish is that it can adapt to fresh, brackish and even salt water. This allows you some leeway when setting up a new tank. These fish prefer a temperature that ranges from 70 to 82 degrees Fahrenheit. They are livebearers, so if you buy a male and a female pair, you could end up with babies. However, they do tend to eat the young if there is not adequate vegetation for the babies to hide in.

8 Signs You Should Not Get a Pet Bird By Dr. Laurie Hess, Dipl ABVP (www.petmd.com) Too many people rush out and buy birds impulsively because they see colorful, interactive animals and just have to have one without actually knowing what they’re getting into. These people often get the new bird home and, while they initially enjoy it because a bird is such a novel pet, they become frustrated with the complexity of the bird’s care and end up losing interest in the animal. Over time, with little attention from the owner, the bird often develops habits like feather picking, screaming or biting, which makes the owner like the pet even less, perpetuating the cycle of decreased interaction. Ultimately, many birds that were once lots of fun end up being returned to the store or left at shelters to be rehomed. To avoid this scenario, it’s important to do your research and consider if a bird is the best pet for you. If any of the following scenarios apply to you, you would likely do better with another type of pet. You Have Little Time to Spend with a Bird With rare exceptions for very small birds, like finches and canaries, most birds (and certainly all parrots) are very social and need several hours
a day outside of their cages to interact with their owners. Without a great deal of handling and interaction with their human flock-mates, parrots will not be socialized properly, may become bored and may start to scream or pick at themselves. So, if you don’t have the time to play with a bird every day, you should choose a less demanding type of pet such as snake, turtle or hamster. 8 Signs continued from page 13 exception. Some smaller birds, such as conures, can be even louder than larger ones, so size is not correlated with volume. In addition, birds like to vocalize at dawn and dusk. While pet parrots can be trained to minimize the squawking to some degree, you can’t stop them from making noise altogether, so if you live in a small apartment with sensitive neighbors, a quieter pet, such as a bunny, guinea pig or reptile, might be a better option.

You Don’t Like Mess Parrots are messy. They chew up their food and throw half of it on the cage bottom. Much of it inevitably ends up getting stuck on perches or on the floor around the cage. Some birds dunk their food in the water cup before eating it, making the wasted food even messier. Many large parrots also shred and tear up toys, throwing pieces of toy everywhere. If this upsets you, opt for a fastidiously clean pet rat or cat over a pet parrot. You Travel Often Unlike reptiles or other types of pets, parrots can’t be left alone for more than a day or so, as

they need fresh water daily (they frequently soil it with food or feces, necessitating a daily water change). Plus, many will develop behavioral problems, such as biting, when they are left in their cages for prolonged periods and not handled. So, if you travel often, unless you have a caretaker who will come daily to play with the bird, best to choose another, less socially-needy pet. You Have Young Children Parrots are called hookbills because they have sharp, pointy beaks that can puncture, crush and inflict significant damage, especially to tiny fingers stuck in cages. Even little birds, such as parakeets, can cause injuries to small children. Therefore, if you have little kids and want a pet bird, better wait a few years until they’re older and less likely to carelessly touch the bird. You Don’t Have Funds for a Pet All pet birds have costs associated with caging, cage accessories (such as food bowls, perches and swings), food (both commercially available pelleted food and fresh produce), toys (that may literally be chewed up and destroyed daily, depending on bird species), and veterinary care. In addition, birds are no different from other pets in that they need preventative medical care. Just as dogs and cats require annual veterinary checkups to stay healthy, so do birds. Most people are
not aware of this when they get pet parrots, and while they are often willing to spend money on buying the bird, they are often reluctant or unable to spend funds on taking care of it. You’re Allergic to Feathers or Feather Dander Many people choose birds as pets because they are allergic to fur. However, many individuals allergic to fur are also allergic to feathers or to feather dander (the white, powdery substance that coats the feathers of certain parrot species, such as cockatoos and cockatiels, and that wafts through the air off feathers). So, before you bring a parrot into your home, be sure that no one has a bird allergy. You Don’t Want a Long-Term Commitment Many parrots live for decades. In general, the larger the parrot, the longer the lifespan. Even small birds, such as cockatiels, can live between 20 and 30 years. Therefore, if you’re not interested in having a pet long term, opt for a shorter-lived pet, like a hamster, gerbil or rat. Birds have so many wonderful characteristics. They are social, interactive, attractive and often can learn to speak human language. They can make great pets, but they are not great for everyone. If you have the time, space, finances and lifestyle to support owning a bird, these incredible creatures can make loving lifelong companions.
