Looking by Back Ed Pany Walking Purchase Chapter 1 of 3
Last month two of my former fine students Mike Wolfer and Douglas Bilheimer mailed a past page of local history to this writer, a 1925 Dedication program listing two historical markers, one in Kreidersville at the site of the old Edelman Mill. Another one north of Hokendauqua Creek in Allen Township. This is a chapter in local history which has been forgotten. The markers recall the Walking Purchase of 1737. The walk was the result of an old deed found by Thomas and John Penn. The Penns and the Native Americans agreed that a day and a half walk starting in Wrightstown in Bucks County was to determine boundaries set forth in the disputed deed. The Penns enlisted three men to complete the walk. The three selected were: Solomon Jennings, a farmer whose farm was near Bethlehem, James Yeates, from Newtown, Bucks County, and Edward Marshall, a hunter and trapper who hunted throughout the area. These men were the strongest and most rapid walkers in the countryside. They were accompanied by officials on horseback and three Lenape braves to see that the walk

Northampton Borough Discusses sewage backup, Hires new police officers By CHRISTINA SANTO The Northampton Borough Council held their first public workshop meeting of the month on Thursday, September 3 at 7:30 p.m. in the municipal building. One Northampton resident brought up a concern about sewage backup due to heavy rain; another resident echoed this concern. Both residents live on Washington Avenue and have experienced this before. Borough Manager LeRoy Brobst stated that he has a meeting with the borough’s engineer next week and will bring it up then. He believes the borough can relieve some of the water that collects there by running another line in the area; however, the engineer needs to approve the project first, but once that happens, the project shouldn’t take too long.
would not be unfair. The braves soon realized the walkers’ furious pace was not what they agreed to! At the end of day one, the group camped near the Hokendauqua Creek near the village of Chief Lappawinzo. The pace of the walk had been so intense that one of the walkers, Solomon Jennings, dropped out and returned home. At sunrise, the group started the second part of the walk. The second walker, James Yeates, exhausted, fell into the creek and died three days later. Only Edward Marshall completed the walk ending at noon on the second day near Mauch Chunk (Jim Thorpe) in Carbon County. The distance covered was an amazing 60 miles walking through the wilderness, adding 1200 square miles to the Penn’s property. The Indians hated Marshall for the walk. They killed one of his sons, wife and wounded his daughter. As a result of the walk, the Quakers turned against the sons of the man who laid the foundation for our state of PennBy JASON KAMERY sylvania. Next, the council considered a request to hire two new full-time police officers; two qualified candidates were recommended by Police Chief Bryan Kadingo. The candidates, Brandon Reph and Emanuel Torres, were hired and sworn in at the meeting by Mayor Thomas Reenock. Keith Piescienski, vice president of council, reminded everyone that the Planning Commission has a meeting on September 9 at 7 p.m; the meeting will address Yost Hauling’s plan to divide their 8.69-acre parcel of land into three separate lots. The Northampton Area High School varsity football team has two tentative home games on October 16 and 23, according to councilman Kenneth Hall. There is no information about whether or not fans may be in attendance yet.
Council members also discussed potentially creating a noise ordinance in the borough, as well as suspending virtual meetings. Acting Solicitor Brian Panella suggested putting the latter on the next meeting’s agenda to not blindside anyone with the decision. Northampton’s next Borough Council meeting will be held on Thursday, September 17 at 7:30 p.m. in the municipal building.
Moore Township Board of Supervisors vote on new roof For Edelman Schoolhouse bring it to you guys that we would like to put a shingle roof on it. If we do it ourselves, we are looking at under $3,000. So we are in the process of getting volunteers to do the roof. I already have three volunteers to go up top and we have people to go on the ground. Randy Silfies will help supervise to tell us what to do.” Vice Chairman David Shaffer asked why not go with a metal roof since it would presumably last for life and cost the same as a shingle roof. Gable explained that the rubber washers that are used on the screws to hold the metal roof in place will deteriorate overtime, causing leaks. Then you have to get back up on the roof, replace all the rubber washers and take all the screws out. The Board of Supervisors voted 3-0 to move forward with shin-

Township Engineer Kevin Horvath discussed an issue with Trapper Road. “This issue was brought to the township’s attention because one of the homeowners that access their property from Allen Drive placed some obstructions across what was the cartway of Trapper Road,” Horvath said. The Board of Supervisors voted 3-0 to send a letter to the property owner that is blocking Trapper Road to remove the obstruction. Continued on page 3

FMCSA awarded nearly $80 million in grants to states and educational institutions to enhance commercial motor vehicle (CMV) safety. NCC was one of 20 educational institutions to receive this Commercial Motor
Vehicle Operator Safety Training (CMVOST) grant. NCC’s grant will help fill a regional shortage of skilled, licensed professional truck drivers and qualified programs that provide adequate operator safety training to meet the region’s growing transportation industry’s employment needs. “With funding support from the CMVOST grant program, NCC will help reduce the severity and number of crashes involving CMVs on U.S. roads by expanding the number of CDL holders possessing enhanced operator safety training,” says Cindy Woodling, program administrator, driver training programs.

Jessica O’Donnell, Executive Vice President of Affiliated Chambers for the Greater Lehigh Valley Chamber commented, “It’s been a challenging year to say the least and our restaurant community needs us now more than ever. Restaurant Week comes at a great time. Plan ahead, take a break from home cooking, and enjoy the many great specials our restaurants have to offer. You’ll be glad you did!” Due to COVID-19, the Chamber warns that there is an inherent risk of exposure in any public place where people are present, but feels confident in the support of the community to abide by the rules and regulations set forth so restaurant week can be enjoyed by all. Many restaurants have outdoor dining and those with indoor dining are at limited capacity to best protect their patrons. Take out and delivery options are available as well. Now more than ever the restaurants and businesses throughout Nazareth need your support. Get out, shop, eat, and drink because Sip, Sip, Hooray, Restaurant Week is on it’s way!

many years of on the job training from her parents. Barbara’s daughter Lynnette also works at Bob’s. It truly has been a family business from its inception, started by Barb’s parents Robert and Rose Transue. Congratulations Barbara on your anniversary, and happy Barbara Miller Day on Wednesday, Sept. 16... This Friday marks the 19th anniversary since Sept. 11, 2001, Patriot Day. A solemn, somber day it is, many many brave lives lost on that fateful day. The damage done, the lives lost, the money loss it caused, and the number of survivors that still battle health issues to this day directly caused from 9/11- the numbers are absolutely astounding. Wherever you find yourself this Friday, take a moment or a few moments or even the whole day to reflect and remember...That’s all for this week gang, have a safe and happy week.
