Senior living residents Say ‘aloha’ to family After year in lockdown
Haleigh, Evangeline, Shiloh and Jessica. By KERI LINDENMUTH Residents of Renaissance Senior Homes in Northampton dawned Hawaiian shirts, colorful leis, and even some grass skirts as the sights, sounds, and smells of an island luau came to Washington Avenue on Saturday, August 28. The over 30 residents and dozens of staff members at the nursing home had reason to celebrate: since the start of the pandemic, there has not been a single COVID case in the Northampton
Renaissance community. Rose Yanger, Renaissance administrative assistant, credited the staff for this remarkable feat. Their hard work kept residents not only safe, but happy, even when residents could not see their children, grandchildren, and other loved ones. “The staff loves the residents as their own family,” said Yanger. Bingo, crafts, senior-cise, and even therapy dog visits were held Continued on page 3

East Allen Township addresses Road hazards, potential Weaversville Road project
By CHRISTINA SANTO The East Allen Township Board of Supervisors met on Thursday, August 26 to discuss the Weaversville Road curve realignment and the township’s involvement in road hazards. Township engineer Jim Milot discussed the Weaversville Road curve realignment project. The project is only in its very early stages, and most likely will not reach construction for another 10 to 15 years. The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation is behind the project and was seeking the township’s input on various plans. Five different plans were presented to the board. The first option, being the least costly and intrusive, only slightly changes the road’s curve. The second option would make Weaversville Road completely straight; this option would affect many residents and the airport property. PennDOT called Option C “desirable and most advantageous” in that it does not take from any properties and accomplishes the project’s goals. This option would
also eliminate truck restrictions on Weaversville Road. Option D placed a roundabout in the area and the final option is similar to the second, but avoids the airport property. The board motioned to allow Milot to inform PennDOT that they prefer the third option, with his amendments to make it less intrusive for residents. The board’s discussion on road hazards was also a carry-over from their previous meeting. At the meeting, the board discussed potentially cutting down trees that are affecting sight distance on a private property at the owner’s expense. This prompted a discussion on the creation of a township policy and ordinance on road hazards. Currently the township has nothing written down on the matter. The township tends to send letters informing the property owner to do something about the issue; if the resident does not take action, the township will trim the trees or weeds themselves, but they have never removed an entire tree.
Supervisor Georgiann Hunsicker expressed that she wanted to be fair to all residents of the township and suggested the creation of a committee to further discuss a road hazard policy and ordinance. Eventually, the board decided to bring the topic up once again at their September 23 workshop meeting to allow board members to further research a potential policy. In other business, the board approved a waiver request regarding frost footings after the motion deadlocked at their previous meeting. Three 12-inch frost footers, as required by PennDOT, were installed in October 2018. After East Allen Township notified the construction company they require 30-inch footers, the correct ones were installed. However, the three 12-inch frost footers in question are still in use, causing the need for a waiver request. Two representatives from the Airport Road Lot 1 Warehouse

Pennsylvania to mandate Masks in K-12 schools, Day cares By ASSOCIATED PRESS HARRISBURG, Pa. (AP) — Masks will be required in all Pennsylvania public and private schools, as well as child care facilities, Gov. Tom Wolf planned to announce Tuesday, reversing course amid a statewide COVID-19 resurgence that is filling hospital beds just as students return to class. The Department of Health order will take effect Tuesday, Sept. 7 — a week or more after the start of school in many districts — and will require students, teachers and staff to wear masks when inside, according to three people briefed on the plan. The people were not authorized to release details ahead of an official announcement and spoke on condition of anonymity. The order will not apply to student athletes while they’re playing, the people said. Two of the people said the masking order will apply to private as well as public schools and will also apply to child care facilities. Wolf and administration officials were scheduled to hold a

news conference on COVID-19 and the schools at 2 p.m. Tuesday. Wolf declined comment when a reporter asked him about the mask mandate outside his Capitol offices Tuesday morning. The Pennsylvania School Boards Association said that the decision on masking should have been left to local school officials, but that it would nevertheless remind school districts “of their legal obligation related to the directive.” The Democratic governor took action after the Republican leaders of the House and Senate rejected his request to pass legislation requiring masks in classrooms. GOP lawmakers acknowledged that coronavirus cases are again surging across the state but insisted that local leaders were best positioned to respond to the pandemic. Less than a month ago, Wolf himself had ruled out a statewide mask mandate for schools after requiring them last year. But the highly contagious delta variant of the coronavirus has changed the administration’s calculus about

Busy, busy week, lots goin’ on and not alotta room to talk about everything! It’s back to school this week. Local schools were havin’ a hard time with the decision on whether to mandate masks or not. Well the decision has been made for them, Gov. Wolf announced Tuesday that all masks will be mandatory in all schools K-12 and daycares...A dedication ceremony was held at Delps Park in Lehigh Township this past Saturday, for the opening of their new dog park...Upper Nazareth Township celebrated their Community Days over the weekend and the Chamber had their Bicentennial Bash too in East Allen Twp. Nazareth Restaurant Week is coming up, the week of Sept 12. The Category 4 hurricane hit Louisiana on Sunday, as one of the most powerful storms ever to hit the U.S. It hit on the anniversary of Hurricane Katrina too. Allen Township approves $1M for purchase of new fire vehicle By KERI LINDENMUTH Following a presentation before the Board of Supervisors earlier in August, the Allen Township Board of Supervisors voted on August 24 to donate $1 million to the Allen Township Fire Company for the purchase of an elevated waterway vehicle. This truck, according to Vice President of the Fire Company and Assistant Fire Chief Mark Kocher, will supply enough water and force to help firefighters battle potential warehouse and commercial fires. “It is an extra level of protection that the township never
had,” he said. Two manufacturers were approached to make the vehicle. While the truck costs $1,020,000, the fire company can receive a substantial discount by paying in full, bringing the cost down to $985,000. Funds will still be available in the fire company’s general fund if needed. In addition, Supervisor and Fire Chief Dale Hassler said the fire company recently applied for a $16,000 grant. “We are taking advantage of any grants that are available,” he said. The donation was unanimous-

Some goals outlined within the draft include the improvement of road safety and an effort to attract additional businesses to certain residential areas as a way to increase revenue. To this end, the plan does entail changes to the township zoning map, including the possibility of added commercial interests near Danielsville. The Comprehensive Planning Committee and the Township Board of Supervisors intend to further discuss the proposed draft at a joint workshop Thursday, September 23. By KERI LINDENMUTH Nazareth Area School District Superintendent Dr. Dennis Riker presented two COVID mitigation options to the NASD School Board for consideration. Both options present a tiered approach that would keep schools open for in-person instruction five-days a week. Neither option would require masks unless a certain threshold of positive cases are confirmed. NASD, said Riker, has to be based on NASD data and not on county data.

“There has been some criticism of me on social media,” he said. “But I believe we need to look at what’s happening here in the Nazareth school district and be responsible in that perspective.” The first option would present three tiers based on school size and the case size in each building. Elementary schools would remain open, full-time, with masks recommended (not required) when cases are four or less over a 10-day rolling period. Masks will still be required on the bus and in the nurse’s office. When there are five or more cases, Tier 2 would require masks for five days. When there are eight or more cases, Tier 3 will require masks for 10 days. In the intermediate school and middle school, Tier 1 will be in effect when there are fewer than five cases. Tier 2 will go into effect when there are six or more cases. Tier 3 will go into effect when there are more than 10 cases (NAIS) or 12 (NAMS). NAHS, as a larger school, has different requirements. Tier 1 is fewer than 10 cases, Tier 2 goes into effect when there are 11 or more cases, and Tier 3 goes into effect with 20 or more cases. The second option uses slightly different calculations that would require more COVID cases over a 10-day period, but all restrictions would remain unchanged from the first option. There will be exemptions for masks based on a medical condition, disability, and religious objection. All exemptions need to be communicated with the principal in writing. “I’m getting ready to start an
amazing school year for our boys and girls,” said Dr. Riker. “The best medication for me...is seeing our teacher’s in action and our boys and girls laughing.” During public comment, parents from both sides of the mask argument made their voices heard. “We have to keep our kids safe and masking them is not safe when not done correctly,” said mother Lisa Lyon. She wanted required mask breaks for students. Bess Collins Van Asselt, mother of an incoming kindergartener and Moravian University professor said, “Put a mask on...then let us look at the data...you are playing a game...and it is not appropriate. Not with our kids.” She added that NASD would burden healthcare workers who must care for children ill with COVID if masks were not required. Many healthcare workers were present at the meeting and advocated strongly for masks. “Some of the things I’ve heard tonight are a little disturbing,” said resident Chuck Caghill, a registered nurse. He said doctors and physicians have been wearing masks for hundreds of years without issue. COVID, he said, is the real danger. “It is not a pretty way to die... you die alone.” Meanwhile, some who spoke questioned case data the CDC is making public. One resident, Ross Ellis, said it would require “magical thinking” to determine that masks help stop the spread. Another parent, Debbie Biro, Continued on page 10

said parents who want a mask requirement should just keep their children home. “If you are not happy and you want your children to wear a mask, you can always keep them home and do home schooling,” she said. But what many parents don’t realize, said others, is that the decision not to wear a mask impacts the entire community beyond Nazareth. “We cannot pretend that Nazareth is a microcosm unto itself and not part of a larger community,” said one mother. Jeff Boehner, a Nazareth father, agreed. “Everyone that wears a mask stops the spread to other people...Your choice is not being affected by my children wearing a mask, but your children not wearing a mask is affecting all of mine. That’s the difference.” Dr. Riker admitted that St. Luke’s has provided recommendations that NASD, and all schools, require masks, which is contrary to the school’s tiered approach. Michael Psathas, counsel for Air Products and father of an incoming kindergartener was angered by this. “I cannot in good conscience send my daughter to kindergarten if you're not listening to health experts that you rely upon...We’re playing politics with our kids.” The board voted 9-0 to implement Option 2 into their health and safety plan. However, some
board members admitted they were not happy with the plan’s “mask optional” language, but knew it was the “best they have.” Board member Dr. Adam McGlynn said, “My biggest priority in all of this is what keeps the schools open. I wish we were doing more...this is what I think can get done right now, thus I will be voting for it.” Board members Kenneth Butz and Joseph Vask also said the plan was not strict enough, but necessary to keep children in school. However, other board members said that parents know their children best. Board Member Kathryn Roberts said there is science to support both sides of the argument and the board must do its best to support the anecdotal data and the scientific data presented by parents and experts. “My gut and my heart are saying, give parents a choice,” added Dr. Linda G. Stubits, school board president. “My head is saying, yeah we need to have a plan in place...my gut, my heart is saying I really don’t want to mask these kids.” With the option the board passed, however, she said NASD is at least being “proactive.”

Nazareth Garden Club Cancels Annual Flower and Garden show
Submitted by SANDEE RINEHART The Nazareth Area Garden Club is sad to announce that our annual Flower and Garden Show will not be held this year, due to the uncertainty of our show site availability as well as public safety issues. The COVID virus and its new surge cannot be predicted, and the venue could close at any time. We are still holding our monthly meetings at Dryland UCC on Newburg Road. Our next meeting will be Tuesday, September 21 at 7 p.m. The featured speaker for that evening is Chris Anthony from Quiet Hills Lavender Farm in Palmerton. As always, the Nazareth Area Garden Club welcomes visitors. For more information, call Sandee Rinehart at 610-360-8370.
