Nazareth Borough Council addresses Bamboo concerns

Cement worker of the Month- Kevin Toth

by ED PANY Mr. Kevin Toth was reared in Nesquehoning, graduating from Panther Valley High School in 1984, where he was a member of the wrestling team. He learned the cobbler trade from his brother and became skilled in shoe repair working in their shops in Lansford and managing the Lehighton Plaza location. When the business closed, he was employed by J.E. Morgan Knitting in Hometown. Kevin started his cement career at LaFarge in 1997, starting on the tire deck, where 400,000 tires are used each year as fuel, saving them from landfill disposal.

He was assigned to the maintenance gang in 2000. Kevin said, “Old timers Larry Broamich Sr., Oliver Derhammer and Larry Kresge shared many of their ideas with me, all fine men.” The maintenance gang today is supervised by Tim Jany and consists of 10 skilled employees. Kevin relates, “If it breaks we repair it, everything from plumbing to fabrication to installations. There are new challenges each day and it takes all departments working together to operate the plant efficiently and safely. Safety is a big factor. There are monthly Continued on page 2

By JUSTIN SWEITZER Members of Nazareth Borough Council updated residents on actions pertaining to bamboo at their August 31 meeting as a local resident continued to put pressure on the board to expedite the process. Councilman Lance Colondo revealed that council would be voting to advertise an ordinance on Sept. 5 that would ban bamboo within the borough and penalize property owners who violate it. He said the ban is modeled after a Bucks County ordinance, and will likely be passed at borough council’s October business meeting. Resident Diane Paine alerted council members of bamboo damage in the borough back in June, after learning that bamboo has grown into her yard from a neighboring home next to her

South New Street property. Paine has continually followed up on council actions at recent meetings, urging them to move quickly in adopting an ordinance and take action to get rid of the bamboo from her neighbor’s property. She provided them with more examples of municipalities that have worked toward banning the plant, including the Borough of Wilson. Paine voiced her dissatisfaction to council members at the workshop meeting, believing that they have been dragging their feet on the issue as bamboo continues to grow into her yard. She said the neighbor has had the bamboo treated three times without success, as it still continues to grow into her yard. “It’s not good enough,” Paine said. “We are digging up bamboo

I am not having those roots under my yard.” Members of council were quick to point out the numerous actions they have taken since the issue was brought to their attention, and the speed at which they’ve addressed it with. “We’ve turned this around lightning fast,” Colondo said. Council President Dan Chiavaroli asked Paine to allow council to deal with the issue properly. “Let us take the time to address the issue,” he said. Nazareth Borough Council will next meet at a workshop meeting on Sept. 28 at 6 p.m.

Old Bath Public School- First Grade By CHARLES MCILHANEY, JR. In September 1952 in Bath, there was little mention of daycares, nursery schools or kindergartens. Most kids knew their first six years of life with a stay at home mom, working dad and the fantasy worlds of early television, like “Howdy Daddy” and “Hopalong Cassidy.” Then, after all the hype, encouragement from adults, and

horror stories older kids were glad to tell, the big day finally arrived- the first day of school. We were seated on chairs at long, low, wooden tables as our teacher, Miss Florence Williamson, went about her business. A group of mothers lingered at the open classroom door pointing and giggling, then soon were gone. Miss Williamson closed the formidable door. A few kids were softly crying, but one boy cried louder than all the rest. Miss Williamson, in a benign manner, asked the children to stop crying so we could get on

with our education. After a bit more sobbing, they stopped, except for the one boy who continued to wail seemingly uncontrollably. Then came the moment that defined my next twelve years of public school education. Miss Williamson, in a stern voice, demanded he stop crying-immediately! After a little more whimpering and sniffling, the room became quiet. Thereafter, we went on to learn to count numbers, sing the letters of the alphabet and read the quaint adventures of Dick, Jane, Sally, their dog Spot and Puff the cat.

GAB OVER by Pete THE FENCE G. Ossip How was your Labor Day? It was kinda quiet, but cool. I think we’re having an early fall. Families had picnics or backyard barbecues that included chicken or steak, extra potatoes from the Spuds and Suds Festival the week before, corn on the cob, and some games. A nice relaxing family time. Now the kids are back in school, so we’re all back on the usual routine, Mom making sure they study their reading, writing and arithmetic, while either Mom or Dad makes sure they meet the school bus or they drive ‘em. The kids are back with their friends or making new ones . . . . That’s not the story in Houston and their close suburbs down in Texas. Hurricane Harvey dumped more than 50 inches of rain in a couple weeks, they don’t know when their schools will open. The devastation from all that water flooding homes and businesses for thousands and thousands of people, so they were wading in the muddy water or waiting for boats, big trucks and helicopters to pick ‘em up.

www.HomeNewsPA.com

Thank goodness for the first responders, volunteers from everywhere to help them, and stadiums to give them shelter. The Red Cross, Salvation Army, National Guard. I hear the U.C.C. church in town is collecting clean-up supplies and it will be going down there to help an awful lot once the water recedes. They aren’t the only ones doing it, just a small fraction of everything needed, so if you know of any organization collecting money or cleaning supplies, they sure can use it. Thank goodness for the generosity of Americans to get them back on their feet, whether it will take months or years. Let’s hope Hurricane Irma doesn’t touch land with its 150 mile an hour winds. . . . Penn State looked pretty good in the rain on Saturday vs. those Akron Zips. My ol' buddy T.P. was there. Says his mom likes to go to that first game up at Beaver Stadium as much as she can. Hard to argue with the moms. . . The Philadelphia Eagles split their four pre-season games, but you can’t tell much from that. We’ll see how good they are when they play the New York Giants. Same goes for the Sixers. Promises, promises, but Philly teams mostly fall short. . . .That’s it for now. Take care and have a safe week.

Zach Mako’s (RLehigh/Northampton) Senior Expo on Friday, September 15, at Bethany Wesleyan Church in Cherryville. “I am excited to host this senior expo,” Mako said. “My predecessor held this event for many years, and I know to expect a large crowd. I encourage senior citizens, their family members and caregivers to stop by for some great information, valuable health screenings and a chance to meet up with old friends.” The expo is free to attend and will be held from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. The church is located at 675 Blue Mountain Drive, Cherryville. Seniors who attend the expo will have the opportunity to visit with more than 70 local, state and federal agencies and organizations offering information on programs and services available to seniors. God Changed Me!

When I was 15, God totally changed my life! As a visiting minister laid his hand on me and prayed, I felt the glory of God! A deep longing to know God was ignited that led to my life-changing experience. I was raised in a Christian home but had become rebellious and had a horrendous, uncontrollable temper. After that touch of God, I wanted more of Him and began to seek Him in prayer and Bible reading. Several months later my father’s unexpected death jolted me into the realization of my inner need of God’s power. That night I attended revival services in Kankakee, IL and earnestly prayed at the altar. As my soul cried out and longed for more of God, I determined to receive all God had for me regardless of the cost! That’s when He revealed to me that I had made playing chess an idol. I had loved chess and spent many hours playing it, but that night I told the Lord that I would burn my set and I did. The next evening I returned to seek Jesus who said, “If any man thirst, let him come unto me and drink” (John 7:37). I stayed to seek Him in the all-night prayer meeting. About 2 a.m. I was intently praying at the altar when my pastor saw a vision of Jesus standing in front of me with His hands outstretched. As my pastor laid hands on me and prayed, I experienced what felt like a burning ball of fire within my chest rising upward! Suddenly I was filled with heavenly ecstasy and began to speak in other tongues just as the followers of Christ did in Acts 2:4. That morning the Holy Spirit became my “Comforter” (John 14:16) and completely changed my life! My previously uncontrollable temper was gone! I had received the “Promise of the Father” (Acts 1:4), and had new power to live the Christian life! Acts 2:39 states, “the promise is unto you and to your children, and to all!” See scriptures on the Holy Ghost Baptism and more details of my experience at: www.naog.ws/thirsty.htm
