It’s The Peak Time Of Year For Deer Collisions
Submitted by Theresa Podguski The number of deer-vehicle collisions increases during October and peaks in November and December. In 2022, there were more than 5,848 deer related crashes in Pennsylvania, according to data from the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation. Moreover, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, there are about 1 million car accidents with deer each year that kill 200 Americans, cause more than 10,000 personal injuries, and result in $1 billion in vehicle damage. AAA’s recommendation: check your coverage. AAA Insurance reports that its average deer-related claim in the region is about $5,600, though costs can be much higher depending on the damage to a vehicle. This year’s average is more than

$600 higher than last year. To help prevent a crash or to reduce damage from an animal collision, AAA suggests motorists: ● Pay attention to deer road signs indicating high levels of deer activity. ● Keep focused on the road to be ready if a deer comes out of nowhere. ● Be especially attentive in early morning and evening hours. Many animals, especially deer, are most active from 5 to 8 a.m. and 5 to 8 p.m. ● Use high beams when there’s no oncoming traffic. ● Slow down and watch for other deer to appear. Deer rarely travel alone. ● Resist the urge to swerve. Swerving away from animals can confuse them and can also put motorists in the path of oncoming vehicles or cause the vehicle to crash into something. ● If the crash is imminent take your foot off the brake. During hard braking, the front end of a vehicle is pulled downward which can cause the animal to travel up over the hood towards the windshield. Letting off the brake can protect motorists from windshield strikes because the animal is more likely to be pushed to one side of the vehicle or over the top of the vehicle. In the event of a deer strike, AAA recommends: ● Call the police. ● Avoid making contact with the animal. A frightened or wounded animal can hurt people or further injure itself. ● Put the vehicle’s hazard lights on, whether it’s light or dark outside. ● If possible, immediately move the vehicle to a safe location, out of the roadway, and wait for help to arrive. ● Motorists should contact their insurance agent or company representative as quickly as possible to report any damage.

Hydroplaning: Safety Tips To Keep Your Vehicle Under Control
Driving-tests.org
How to prevent hydroplaning
1. Reduce your speed. Most automobile safety experts agree that hydroplaning is most likely to occur at speeds greater than 35 miles per hour. 2. Properly and regularly rotate and balance your tires. It is advisable to have your vehicle’s tires rotated and balanced every other time you have your oil changed. 3. Choose high quality tires that are designed to prevent hydroplaning. Driving on slick or bald tires can be detrimental on wet roadways. 4. No cruising in the rain. Never use your vehicle’s cruise control function while it is raining or while
driving on wet roads. 5. Avoid puddles and standing water. It only takes a small film of water to cause hydroplaning.
How to recover from hydroplaning
1. Immediately take your foot off of the accelerator. Never use your brakes to respond to hydroplaning. 2. Although it may seem contradictory, gently turn your steering wheel in the direction your car is hydroplaning. This will help your tires realign with the direction your vehicle is traveling and assist you in regaining steering control. 3. Wait to feel the tires reconnect with the surface of the road.

Top 5 Car Questions Answered
Blog.nationwide.com 1. Why does my “check engine” light come on? One of the common reasons your check engine light comes on has an easy (and free) solution. If your gas cap wasn’t put on tightly the last time you filled the tank, it can affect the pressure in the fuel-delivery system — and that triggers the check engine warning. Try tightening your gas cap first. If that doesn’t work, see your mechanic; it could be anything from a failing catalytic converter to faulty spark plugs to an oxygen sensor failure. Because this light could indicate a number of different problems, it’s easiest to have your mechanic diagnose the issue. 2. What is the correct tire pressure for me — and how often should I check it? The correct tire pressure varies from one car to the next. You can find the manufacturer’s recommended tire pressure on a sticker that’s usually on the door jamb of the driver’s side. Always follow that number, not the psi number listed on the side of the tire itself. Check the pressure at least monthly, or every time you fuel up.

3. Do I have to have my car serviced by the dealership to have it covered by my warranty? The warranty on your car is good regardless of where you have it serviced. However, if you have car maintenance tasks, such as oil changes and tire rotations, performed somewhere other than the dealership, make sure you keep a record of when and where the work was done. Keep the receipts, too. If you have proof that the work was done, the dealership or automaker should honor the warranty. Continued on Page 6 INSPECTION, AUTO REPAIRS BRAKE REPAIR, CUSTOM PIPE BENDING

4. How often should I have my oil changed? It used to be that drivers were encouraged to change their oil every 3,000 miles. Now, thanks to innovations in the way engines are designed and changes to oil formulations, today’s manufacturers typically recommend an oil change every 5,000 to 10,000 miles, and that’s also true if you’re using synthetic oils. Check your owner’s manual to find out what’s right for your car; recommendations vary by car make and model. 5. What should I check before buying a used car? In addition to getting information about the car’s history via online reports, look for signs of failing parts, such as gauges and lights that don’t work properly. Rust, if it’s extensive, can weaken the car’s frame and make it unsafe to drive. Check the electric door locks and windows to make sure they all work. You also want brakes that feel solid, not spongy. If the car’s exhaust system makes a lot of noise, this could be a sign of a big repair bill in your future. When in doubt, have a trusted mechanic check out the car.

Quick Steps To Take If Your Gas Pedal Sticks Statefarm.com
Stay calm and try not to panic. Push the brake firmly with both feet and hold it down. Don't pump the brake pedal or release it because you will lose all your vacuum power assist, causing your brakes to become stiff and very hard. Shift the car into neutral. If the car has a manual transmission, remember to depress the clutch to shift gears. Steadily hold the brake and look for an escape route, like a hard shoulder on the highway. Avoid
quick lane changes, which could cause you to swerve and lose control of the vehicle. If possible, steer in a straight line. Do not turn off the engine unless shifting into neutral is unsuccessful. Turning off the engine will turn off the power-assist brake functions, making it harder to maneuver the car. When you have come to a controlled stop out of the way of traffic, turn the engine off (if you have not already done so). If you use a key, keep it in the ignition when you turn off the engine so the steering wheel doesn't lock. If your vehicle has a start on/off button, hold the button down for at least three seconds to disable the vehicle. Do not tap repeatedly. Call for assistance. Do not drive the vehicle until it has been professionally serviced.
What To Do If You Put The Wrong Statefarm.com Fuel In A Car
Diesel fuel in a gas tank: gas engines can't combust diesel, so your car may not start; if it does, it will probably smoke. While engine damage is unlikely, you will need to get the tank drained, a service that may range from Continued on Page 8

$500 to $1000, and pay for the cost of a tow. Gas in diesel: because diesel acts as a lubricant for the fuel system, thinner gasoline can cause the fuel pump, filter and injectors to wear, especially if the engine runs. Call for a tow and have the tank drained and the parts checked. Plus/premium in regular gas: you probably won't see any benefits or damage. Regular in plus/premium: you may hear rattling and notice reduced performance and decreased fuel economy, but your car probably won't sustain lasting engine damage. Simply switch back to premium as soon as possible, and always refer to your owner's manual for recommendations. Ethanol E85 in gas: if the car is not a flexiblefuel vehicle, you may see the "check engine" light flicker — and this may void the manufacturer warranty. However, this swap probably won't cause permanent damage. Keep topping off your tank with regular gasoline; your car should eventually run as normal.
Your Frequently Asked EV Questions Answered Caranddriver.com
How long do EVs last? Electric vehicles are designed to last as long as any other vehicle. A central question for many people considering an EV is whether the battery pack will need to be replaced during the life of the car. The answer is no. Carmakers design the battery to have the same lifespan as that of the car. How do I charge at home? You can recharge an EV at home from a wall outlet using the 120-volt portable charging cord that’s standard or optional with all new EVs— but you won't want to. The far better solution is installing what’s called a Level 2 charging station, operating at 240 volts—the same voltage used by electric stoves and clothes dryers. What about public charging? There are two types of public charging: Level Continued on Page 10

The U.S. average is now about 16 cents per kWh, and you’ll get roughly three miles for each kWh in an electric car or small SUV and two miles in a large, heavy electric truck. course, you won't hear the familiar sound of an engine and you'll find most EVs have surprisingly brisk acceleration. The one most noticeable difference from gasoline-powered vehicles is what's called regenerative braking. When you lift off the accelerator pedal, the motor that powers the wheels can instantly and automatically convert into a generator to help recharge the battery. The resistance while in this generator mode slows the car down as if you dropped it into a lower gear or applied the brakes moderately.
