The Krista Hankee Memorial Golf Tournament and the Slatington Open Golf Tournament Give to Slatington Library Elevator Fund Drive The Slatington Public Library is currently raising money to install an elevator and to complete other necessary building maintenance. The community and local businesses have been very generous and we are closing in on our goal. Two local Golf Tournaments each gave $1,000 to help reach the $15,000 goal. The Krista Hankee Memorial Fund was found in 2007 after the tragic death of Krista Hankee whose parents, Bill and Chris Hankee, wish to continue her legacy of love for her community and her giving nature. The memorial fund raises money through Golf Events and partners with over 70 businesses, service organizations and a very caring community. The fund has given out over $141,100 in scholarships and grants to 62 students, and has given $240,000 worth of Giant gas cards to families in need of Continued on page 4

VETERANS DAY 2020 IN MEMORY AND HONOR… During the past year, we have had the privilege of serving the families of Veterans. We are honored to be of service to them in their time of need, just as their loved one was there in our time of need. On Veterans Day, we pay tribute to those who served our country in the name of Freedom, the same Freedom that allows us to serve them. Our prayers are with all the Veterans, their families, and with the brave men and women serving our country today. We also wish to thank those from our area’s veteran service groups who volunteer their time in honor guards and firing squads bestowing the greatest honor for their deceased comrades.

Thank You for 35 Great Years Dear TCG Readers and Advertisers,
A
s the Blue Mountain Town & Country Gazette celebrates with this issue its 35th anniversary, every one of us at the Gazette wants to thank every one of you – our readers and advertisers – for your continued trust and support over these many years. Because of you, the vision for the Gazette that was laid out in the first issue in 1985, that of supporting businesses in the area and sharing the latest news from our region, has succeeded. That vision has always carried the publication forward. Actually, it is you who have carried the publication forward and we thank you sincerely for doing that. The original owner spoke of the Gazette as a vehicle to share “items of interest about people we all know, businesses in the area, what is happening in general – and more.”
Over the years, many, but not all of the people and businesses have changed. In terms of covering what is “happening in general,” some things have stayed the same, but boy, have other things changed. In this thirty-fifth year of the Gazette, we’ve provided far more coverage of a global pandemic than we ever would have wished to do. But we also put out an entire issue that focused on the joys and benefits of shopping at local and regional farmers’ markets and why local farmers and the food they produce deserve our significant – and ongoing – support. We look forward to putting the spotlight on more local farmers in 2021. In the summer months we also did an issue with a big highlight on some of your vintage cars and trucks. Not only was that a reader favorite, but it revealed that there

In the Arts, 1985 was a year of high-profile loss. Iconic actors Michael Redgrave, Rock Hudson and Margaret Hamilton, the Wicked Witch of the West in The Wizard of Oz, all passed away in 1985. The Arts also lost Chester Gould, the cartoonist and creator of the Dick Tracy comic strip, E. B. White, author of the classic Charlotte’s Web and iconic film director Orson Welles.
Gaming
One of the gaming introductions of 1985 occurred on September 13th and the game eventually sold 40 million copies, making it the best-selling video game of all time until 2008.That game was Nintendo’s Super Mario Bros.
Other Interesting Facts
Nintendo of America Inc
which was pretty incredible. Meanwhile, WrestleMania debuted at Madison Square Garden. In the World Series, the Kansas City Royals beat the St Louis Cardinals, while the Edmonton Oilers won the Stanley Cup. At the Indy 500, Danny Sullivan won (for Penske Cars), while Spend-A-Buck won the Kentucky Derby with a time of 2:00:20.
Other interesting facts from 1985 include Pete Rose breaking Ty Cobb’s record with his 4,192nd hit and the number of Barbie dolls ever produced surpassing, in number, the American population at the time, which was 237,923,795. Lastly, some new jargon came into being in 1985 from the business “takeover” trends of the day. That jargon includes white knight, golden parachute, poison pill and junk bonds. So yes, the debut of the Blue Mountain Town & Country Gazette was the big news in 1985, but as noted, some other items of interest did occur as well.

1985 NBA Rookie of the Year SOURCE: thepeoplehistory.com
In May of 1985, legendary basketball player Michael Jordan was given the NBA’s “Rookie of the Year” award during his inaugural season. Jordan was drafted by the Chicago Bulls in 1984 and played exceptionally well in his first season. He immediately became one of the fan-favorite players. Jordan helped the Bulls get into the playoffs for the first time in several years and set numerous team records that season. As time went by, Jordan would evolve into one of the most wellknown, highest-paid and accomplished basketball players of all time. Today, he is still considered by many to be the best and most competitive player to have ever played the sport professionally.

Top-Selling Car and Truck of 1985 SOURCE: bestsellingcarsblog.com
Editor’s Note: Today it’s not really“car”and“truck”as it was in 1985. In 2020, Ford, for instance, has stopped making cars in America, so for the purposes of the comparison to 2020 at the end of this article, it’s now “non-truck” (SUV, crossover, etc.) and “truck.” In 1985, 10,968,515 new vehicles found a buyer in the United States, up 7% from the year before. There were 11 American carmakers in the Top 15. Four of them have disappeared since, including Oldsmobile, which was at #3 in 1985 with 1,087,641 sales, Pontiac at #8 with 782,617, Mercury at #9 with 561,387 and Plymouth at #11 with 481,216 units sold.
AMC-Renault at #20 had 145,733 sales and Peugeot at #30 moved 18,101 units. Both of those French manufacturers gave up on the U.S. market shortly after. The Toyota Hilux/SR5 was very well ranked in 7th place thanks to 291,442 sales, while the Oldsmobile Cutlass Supreme placed at #12 and the Olds 88 at #15. The Chevrolet Camaro was #14, while the Nissan Sentra – the most popular imported passenger car – landed at #19 selling 179,230 units, and Toyota’s Corolla came in at #20 with 168,378 sales. Further down the ranks, the U.S.-made Honda Accord came in at #30, the Mercury Cougar XR7 at #42, the AMC-Renault Alliance at #73 and the AMCRenault Encore came in at #117.
Car & Truck Rankings
The Ford F-Series was the best-selling vehicle in the country with 562,507 sales ahead of the Chevrolet C/K at 436,910. The Chevrolet Cavalier at #3 was the best-selling passenger car at the time, selling 431,031 units, ahead of the Ford Escort at 420,690, Chevrolet Celebrity at 363,619 and Oldsmobile Ciera at 333,585. Toyota was the best-selling foreign brand at #5 with 905,405 units sold, followed by Nissan at #7 selling 798,891 units, and Honda at #10 with 528,095.

Fast Forward to 2020
Thirty-five years later in 2020, the coronavirus pandemic has upset car sales, as well as most other things, so for our purposes we will use the 2020 numbers for the first two quarters. According to Car & Driver magazine, the number one car, now categorized as the bestselling non-truck, was the Toyota RAV4, which sold 183,360 units in the first two quarters. The RAV4 shows up in fourth place overall. The #1 bestselling truck – and also bestselling vehicle – is still the Ford F-Series, which sold 367,387 units in the first two quarters of the year.

A major study from the National Institutes of Health showed that when it comes to walking, more is more for older adults. Specifically, the more steps those over 40 take, the lower their mortality risk from all causes. But what surprised the researchers? How low-intensity strolls appeared to have the same benefits as higher-intensity power walks for the nearly 5,000 study participants. Adjusting for factors such as the subjects’ existing

Veterans Day History & Stats
SOURCE: History.com
With Veterans Day just around the corner – on November 11th – we decided to take a look at some interesting facts and history around this special day. Veterans Day originated as “Armistice Day” on Nov. 11, 1919, the first anniversary of the end of World War I. Congress passed a resolution in 1926 for an annual observance and Nov. 11 became a national holiday beginning in 1938. Unlike Memorial Day, Veterans Day pays tribute to all American
26
veterans – living or dead – but especially gives thanks to living veterans who served their country honorably during war or peacetime. National Holiday of Recognition Veterans Day occurs on November 11 every year in the United States in honor of the “eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month" of 1918 that signaled the end of World War I. It was originally known as Armistice Day, but in 1954, President Dwight D. Eisenhower officially changed the name of the holiday from Armistice Day to Veterans Day. In 1968, the Uniform Holidays Bill was passed by Congress, which moved the celebration of Veterans Day to the fourth Monday in October. The law went into effect in 1971, but in 1975 President Gerald Ford returned Veterans Day to November 11, due to the important historical significance of the date. Veterans Day commemorates veterans of all wars. Arlington National Cemetery, which is home to the graves of 400,000 people, most of whom served in the military, holds an annual memorial service every Veterans Day and also Memorial Day. Veterans Today Today’s military men and women who serve and protect the United States come from all walks of life; they are parents, children, grandparents, friends, neighbors and coworkers, and are an important part of their communities. Here are some facts about the veteran population of the United States: * 18.2 million living veterans served during at least one war as of 2018. * 9 percent of veterans are women. * 7 million veterans served during the Vietnam War. * 3 million veterans have served in support of the War on Terrorism. * Of the 16 million Americans who served during World War II, about 496,777 were still alive as of 2018. * Connecticut was home to the highest percentage of World War II veterans as of 2018 at 7.1 percent. * 2 million veterans served during the Korean War. * As of 2017, the top three states with the highest percentage of Veterans were Alaska, Maine and Montana, respectively. This Veterans Day, let’s all remember and honor our veterans, past and present, who have served and protected our nation through times of war and times of peace.

health status, researchers found that taking 8,000 steps a day, compared with 4,000 steps, was associated with a 51 percent lower risk for all-cause mortality. Even better, taking 12,000 steps a day was linked to a 65 percent lower risk, compared with 4,000 steps.
Short Workouts Work
Five-minute workouts are officially approved. According to several studies, including one published in the Journal of the American Heart Association, walks of two minutes provide the same mortality-slashing benefits of those taking 10 minutes. The science no longer supports that you have to be active in 10-minute intervals. It very clearly supports that any movement is leading to benefits – and the more you move, the more benefits you get.
Light and Easy Does It
When it comes to walking, part of the magic may be in how such light-intensity activity ups gait speed, which, in turn, has a direct relationship with cardiovascular outcomes and premature mortality, disability and frailty. This is according to Libby Richards, an associate professor at the Purdue University School of Nursing, whose primary research focus is physical activity in older adulthood. If fear of injury or re-injury is holding you back, the new federal exercise guidelines are very clear that participating in physical activity reduces your risk of falls. Says Richards, “Exercise improves balance. It also reduces the risk of injury if you do sustain a fall, because being active increases your muscular health and your bone health. So it's a win."
Sitting: Still the New Smoking
“Sedentary behavior” is bad news all around,” Richards cautions.“It's now linked with poor sleep, symptoms of depression, and reduced executive function and cognitive ability in older adults. So if
there's just one thing that people could do, it would be to sit less and move more." You've heard this news before about sitting. But research continues to strengthen the finding that being sedentary is akin to smoking. Barbara Resnick, a professor of organizational systems and adult health at the University of Maryland School of Nursing and past president of the American Geriatrics Society, implores people to think about how they can incorporate activity into their daily routine to avoid problems like increased risk of heart disease, high blood pressure and a shorter life span. Her advice? Identify long periods of sitting in your daily routine, and conceive of ways to break them up. For instance, try sit-to-stands or a few balance exercises during commercial breaks on TV. Or, as she advises her patients living in facilities, build in short walks – say, to pick up mail or get fresh air – beyond your travels to a dining area or to regular activities.“It seems like very little activity, but we know that there are benefits, especially for somebody who's frail,” Resnick notes. “We know that if you sit there, you're going to be able to do less and less and less. And that's what people don't realize – they think it's just gonna stay, but it doesn't.”

Practically nothing will stay back; With everything “Sold” here goes A piece of Dad’s heart. No one there, of course, sees The tears in his eye(s); They just think about the bargains Like a group of heathens might. They don’t comprehend what the items mean To Dad, since he stands And looks into the past – And how much sorrow it causes him. What do they care what he thinks Of that old chair, The sewing box and the ball of yarn, The needle, thread and spool. It brings to him immediately a dear picture Just so clear like yesterday – Mom mending socks and The kitten on the floor, While he read the paper at the table With the old coal-oil light, Which also had auctions printed within – Many of them he saw. The dishes reminded him of the meals, Which mom fixed; Hardy fare, not small amount of leftovers With everything mixed in. The cradle, the high-chair, things for children, which mom would keep for future use – They were now all sold today, And strangers bid on it.
One certainly finds no replacement for it, Trying like one would. Yet the auctioneer continues on With all seriousness and zeal; The people, they outbid one another – It’s auction day at the Freys.
HAPPY BIRTHDAY Ken Longley 74 11/11 Jason Longley 30 11/25 Ella Angle. 6 11/7 Emma Angle 9 11/19
The years change everything around, The children left home; Mom now rests in her grave – Nothing here is pleasant anymore. This means he must go to the children – To Jim, John and Betsy; He knows, of course, that he will be in the way There, and also do everything wrong. One always went to the auction right away Like those, who are out there today; And it makes a great difference To one [to] go out from his own sale. Auction – I wonder how many hearts That word broke! NOVEMBER 5, 2020 || townandcountrygazette.com

The “#1 Thanksgiving Side Dish?
SOURCE: Insider.com
When it comes to Thanksgiving dinner, most would agree the roast turkey is the star of the table. But what about the side dishes? In the South, no Thanksgiving is complete without corn pudding and bacon-infused Brussels sprouts. Midwesterners love their green bean casserole, and no New England table is complete without Parker House rolls. In a world where not all side dishes are created equal, which one truly reigns supreme? Read on and find out! Corn / Often shows up in a corn pudding for Thanksgiving. A favorite from the South. Glazed Carrots / Although these can add a lovely sweetness and bright color to any plate, a similar function can be fulfilled by more time-honored favorites such as sweet potatoes and cranberry sauce. Candied Yams / Easy and delicious, but between sweet potato casserole and sweet potato pie, the yam is well represented on the table. Brussels Sprouts / Though this vegetable might bring groans and complaints from the younger set at Thanksgiving, when perfectly roasted and doctored up with bacon and some maple syrup, these mini cabbages go from "I'll pass" to "Please, pass me more!" 30
Sweet Potato Casserole / This is a bona fide Thanksgiving classic. Though some may find this dish, topped with mini marshmallows, a little too sweet for the dinner plate, it's hard to pass up. Green Bean Casserole / Green bean casserole is salty and creamy and features those irresistible crispy little onions. Whether you go with the oldschool canned green bean casserole or decide to go with an all-fresh version, there's no way to go wrong with this traditional dish, and its popularity reflects that. Cranberry Sauce / Some love the jellied, canned cranberry sauce (with the ridge marks intact), others prefer to make their own. No matter which way you go, with its deep red color and perfect tartness, cranberry sauce is necessary to round out any Thanksgiving plate. Rolls / The roll may be one of the humbler offerings on Thanksgiving, but what else will be able to soak up all that savory, rich gravy that spills over from your turkey and mashed potatoes? Macaroni and Cheese / This may not be what you consider a classic Thanksgiving side dish, but for kids and people who don't like fall foods, few things are more comforting than a gooey, creamy and perfectly cheesy mac and cheese.
News@TownAndCountryGazette.com || NOVEMBER 5, 2020
Stuffing / This is a Thanksgiving essential. It's savory, yet delightfully fluffy and moist. Sage, thyme, and other quintessential fall flavors are out in full force. Mashed Potatoes / At Thanksgiving, mashed potatoes are the winner! These creamy, fluffy piles of heaven are Thanksgiving’s “#1” side dish. Not only are mashed potatoes the perfect binder for picking up a forkful of turkey, stuffing, cranberry sauce, and more, they are also the perfect vessel for holding a big ol' vat of gravy. Hands down, mashed potatoes are the “#1” side on Thanksgiving.

(610) 760-8888 How To: Fall Turkey Hunting SOURCE: Meateater.com By Tony J. Peterson
While the average weight of a fall turkey is below 15 pounds, a bird of that size will consume roughly five pounds of food each week, and they don’t take kindly to rival birds homing in on their calories. This territoriality is what makes fall turkeys susceptible to certain hunting tactics. If you can figure out where birds are feeding daily, you can simply bushwhack one. Or, you can slip in and set up a blind with a single feeding hen decoy. After that, yelp, cut, purr, and cluck to any nearby birds. If you want to learn how to speak turkey by conversing with lots of garrulous birds, fall is where it’s at. You probably won’t hear as much gobbling as a spring hunt, but the flocked-up birds will still converse with you if you open up the lines of communication. This goes for flocks of hens and poults, as well as flocks of gobblers. Neither will tolerate a single, loudmouth hen who appears to Continued on page 34 NOVEMBER 5, 2020 || townandcountrygazette.com

flock to you. Throw in some scratching to sell the ruse that a stranger is eating the groceries. If possible, have multiple tags in your pocket and sit tight if you shoot a bird. Hens will hop on their dead sisters just like spring toms will stomp their fallen brothers. Oftentimes, especially if you’re bowhunting, a good shot on a bird will keep the rest of the flock around for a long time, which opens up more opportunities. While it hasn’t caught on like spring turkey hunting, fall forays done right can be just as exciting. The only difference is that you’re hunting birds that think with their stomachs instead of their hearts.
be feeding in their field. I’ve filled plenty of fall tags in several states with this method and have arrowed many hens that were chest-bumping my decoy in crazy shows of dominance. Most fall seasons allow you to tag hens, which are very territorial this time of year. There are a few things to consider for pulling off one of these hunts, though. Scouting is crucial for killing any fall bird. If you see the flock in a cut cornfield today at noon, they’ll be there tomorrow. If you don’t see birds but find plenty of sign, plan a mid-morning sit. If they don’t show, come back the next day for an afternoon sit. Since turkeys aren’t nocturnal, you’ll be able to pin down their Amber Angle 36 11/1 pattern. Giant Company, Customers And Supplier Partners Donate $2 Million To Help Eliminate Hunger In Local Communities The GIANT Company today announced with the help of its customers and supplier partners, $2 million was donated to support local hunger relief efforts in the communities it serves. The fundraising campaign kicked off September 1 in honor of Hunger Action Month™, the Feeding America® nationwide network of food banks’ awareness campaign designed to mobilize the public to take action on the issue of hunger. The Fall 2020 campaign raised the most money in company history. “As hunger relief organizations continue to face increased demand due to the pandemic, our customers stepped up in a big way to help fill the plates of their neighbors in need, making this our most successful campaign in the fight against hunger in company history,” said Emily Steinkamp, manager of social impact, The GIANT Company. Donations could be made in a variety of ways including customer donations at the register, by purchasing special reusable bags with a portion of each sale going to regional food banks, rounding
up their purchase at self-checkout and donating CHOICE Rewards points. Supplier partners supported fundraising efforts by making donations when select items were purchased. The GIANT Company donated a total of $500,000 to 20 local food banks and pantries across four states to provide funding to address the increased need. An additional $100,000 was also donated to Feeding America through The GIANT Company’s 1 for 100 campaign where for each picture shared of a family connecting over a meal on Facebook, Twitter or Instagram using #ForTodaysTable during the month, 100 meals were donated to neighbors in need. The GIANT Company team members participated in product donations in partnership with Unilever and the Please Touch Museum and logged more than 1,000 volunteer hours at food banks throughout the month. Visit the GIANT or MARTIN’S website to learn more about the company’s ongoing efforts to eliminate hunger in its local communities
All vehicles are disinfected after each trip. Chauffeurs will be wearing a mask at all times and temperature checks before each trip.

Slatington’s recreational areas. The cleanup held on Saturday October 24 began under cloudy skies but no rain, and the perfect temperatures for a cleanup allowed the army of volunteers to clean the following areas in Slatington: Bed Bug Cave area, Diamond & Chestnut Streets, Fish Pond, Slatington Memorial Park, Slatington Trailhead, Victory Park, Walnut Street Playground, West End Playground, Williams Island and the Slate Heritage Trail from the Slatington Trailhead continuing westward to the borough line. The volunteers were able to collect a several dozen bags of garbage, and many larger items. The Slatington Parks & Recreation Commission would like to thank the following businesses, individuals and civic groups for helping make the cleanup a huge success: Keith at Diggity Dog for donating French Fries and pierogies Mama’s Pizza for donating Hoagies, Matt Schmall for donating coffee and donuts from Dunkin Donuts, Cub Scout Troop #66, Northern Lehigh Recreation Authority - Lindsay Taylor, Slatington Rotary Club, The Northern Lehigh High School Interact Club, Giant Supermarket in Walnutport, and the Slatington Fire Department –manpower hauling away the collected garbage and larger items found in and along the trails and parks, and all the other individuals who helped in cleaning Slatington’s, parks, playgrounds and trails! We hope to see these community groups participate again with the addition of even more volunteers for next year’s cleanup, our 10th annual tentatively scheduled for Saturday April 24, 2021.

Helping Your Child During Online Learning by Christine Allen, president of Reading Escapades & Math Explorers, Inc.
Virtual learning has really taken this year by storm. Some students are loving the new set up because of the freedom that comes with it. Others are breaking down because they are so frustrated. However, most students are experiencing short times of motivation followed by periods of inactivity on their virtual platforms. It is understandable that parents feel at a loss as this is something no one has ever had to go through and the struggle is real. In order to help your children the best, parents should understand that children thrive on consistency and structure. On the other hand, freedom is important for independent skills, while building true self-confidence. When these two things are balanced, your child has a higher chance of success with anything life throws at them. To help your child, best practices include being in the same room to help wih guiding them, creating a schedule for them, and staying consistent. If in the end, things are still unable to be settled, or your child is struggling with the concepts of school, consider bringing your child to Reading Escapades and Math Explorers for our Sanity Saving Sessions one or more days a week during school
hours. We have a place for each of our students to work independently with our amazing teachers walking around to answer questions and keep everyone on task. We have also time for the students to safely socialize. If you would like help in this journey, please reach out to us at www.read2day.com or on our Facebook page www.facebook.com/read2day and we can help guide you what is best for your family
