From the Editor’s Desk
Joe Korba
Welcome to our annual “Green” edition of the Town & Country Gazette. Everyone here takes conservation very seriously, which continues the legacy that Alice Wanamaker established when she was still in our Walnutport office. We recycle locally and our printer in Lancaster is extremely eco-friendly. In fact, the Gazette is 100% recyclable, so I hope you readers are doing your part as well. Personally, I like to eat as much sustainable food as possible and bike or walk instead of drive. I’ve found these to be sound financial decisions as well as ethical environmental choices. As always, I hope you guys enjoy this one. Remember, we are still looking for nominees for our “Blue Mountain’s Best” feature, so if you have any outstanding neighbors, family, or friends, send the nomination to dtepper@idpcreative.com.

Meet the Staff For our Go Green edition, what are some ways you try to reduce your carbon footprint, conserve energy, and do good for the planet? Joe Korba, Associate Publisher: I walk or ride my bike as often as possible. I also maintain a small garden for my vegetables and attempt to get my food locally as much as I can. I think supporting sustainable, ethical local agriculture is a moral imperative. This is especially important in the face of the ever-increasing ecologically unsound and inhumane practices of giant agribusinesses like Monsanto. Danielle Tepper, Publishing Assistant: Two things I never do—and it greatly irritates me when I see other people do them—is use electrical lighting when the sun is shining (Do you really need it? No.) and let my car idle when parked somewhere (Just, why?) for a quick errand. I also avoid plastic bag usage, I recycle, and, as an animal rights advocate, I try to be a consciously crueltyfree consumer as much as possible. (Plus, can you imagine the footprint of a factory farm or testing lab?) Check out LUSH Cosmetics at www.lushusa. com for all-natural, handmade, harm-free (not to mention delicious and luxurious!) bath products.
Tony Pisco, Art Director: We don't do anything fancy. Just try to recycle everything that can be recycled and we also try to compost as much as possible. Alice Wanamaker, Publishing Assistant: I am very proud to wear my tree hugger heart on my sleeve and reducing my carbon footprint is always at the forefront of my decisions. One of the easiest changes I've made is walking or riding my bike to run small errands like going to the post office or picking something up at the grocery store. There are so many (easy) things we can each do in our lives that go far beyond recycling that will make such a positive impact on the Earth; plant a tree, reuse an empty milk container, shop at a resale store, walk to work or carpool if you can, replace a lightbulb, or simply turn off a light when you are not using it. Small changes make big differences. Donna Bachman, Accounting Manager: We run the dishwasher only when it's full, use the energy-saving setting, and allow dishes to air dry. When buying new appliances, we look for the Energy Star Labels. Tyler Trumbauer, Staff Writer: To be honest, I am not very conscious of my carbon footprint most of the time, like I should be. However, I have never littered and never will do it as I feel that is avoidable damage to our great planet. I am working on getting greener, but if everyone does just a little bit, it will make a big difference.

Joke CorneR Organic Vegetables
A woman called her husband during the day and asked him to pick up some organic vegetables for that night’s dinner on his way home. The husband arrived at the store and began to search all over for organic vegetables before finally asking the produce guy where they were. The produce guy didn’t know what he was talking about, so the husband said, “These vegetables are for my wife. Have they been sprayed with poisonous chemicals?” To which the produce guy replied, “No, sir, you will have to do that yourself.”
The Flush
Q: Why are environmentalists bad at playing cards? A: They like to avoid the flush. (www.jokes4us.com)

McGruff The Crime Dog And AlertID Raise Awareness
April is Sexual Assault Awareness Month
Submitted by KELI WILSON Ann Harkins, CEO of The National Crime Prevention Council (Home to McGruff the Crime Dog®), and Keli Wilson, AlertID’s Founder, are teaming up to create awareness and support victims during Sexual Assault Awareness Month. According to government reports, a sexual assault occurs every two seconds in America. Unfortunately, these incidents are reported less frequently than any other violent crime as only a small percentage of brave survivors are willing to step forward to report their assaults and participate in the criminal justice process. With more than 200,000 reported incidents of sexual violence occurring each year, the two organizations are working together in an effort to raise awareness and to stress prevention of sexual assault as well as to support victims. “Those who suffer sexual assaults need to know they are not alone and isolated,” said Ann M. Harkins, NCPC President and CEO. “There are resources available to help survivors, and NCPC has resources to help people learn how to take proactive measures to increase their personal safety and reduce potential victimization. We are proud to team with AlertID and its platform to provide up-to-the-minute information that can help our families, friends, and neighbors stay safe.” For AlertID’s Founder, Keli Wilson, supporting victims is of great importance, but she also wants to emphasize the importance of prevention. AlertID informs you of the dangers in your neighborhood and allows you to communicate with neighbors very quickly. The free program offers crime and sex offender alerts, in addition to other important public safety alerts and prevention tips online, via email and on smartphones. According to Keli, “Information is power, and the more we are aware of the dangers in our neighborhoods and the more proactive we are, the better we can protect ourselves, our children and our families.” For prevention tips and resource information on Sexual Assault from AlertID, developed in conjunction with the National Crime Prevention Council, please visit: http://alertid. com/search/sex-crimes.asp.

BEWARE OF THE “OFFICIAL” LOOKING NOTICES
Recently I worked with a couple of clients in transactions that, for various reasons, required them to transfer their real estate from a trust to themselves, or from themselves to a trust. In all instances the mailing address of the old and new owners of the property were the same. These were ordinary people that were doing simple transactions often recommended to our clients. Not too long after the transfers occurred and the deeds were filed with the County, those individuals received very official looking notices in the mail. Those notices were in a plain black and white envelope containing a generic looking barcode with the words “DEED PROCESSING NOTICE” in very large and bold type. The notice outlined the importance of obtaining a copy of their deed and provided that a copy could be obtained for a fee of $83. The notice also restated much of the key assessment data that is available on various county assessment websites. The notice was issued by a third party business, with the hope that the layout of their form would fool people into paying the $83. Of course, the notice has legal disclaimers that state it is not associated with any governmental entity, but it also has due dates listed and the layout makes it appear “official”. Luckily, my clients came to the office or called in with questions about the notice. Some clients asked why I did not tell them about the county fee for their deed. I informed the clients that we provide them their original deed once it is indexed with the county. Further, as a matter of public record certified copies are available for a few dollars at the county courthouse should they inadvertently lose the original. A similar issue has arisen for those who start new businesses and file for an incorporation. A company called Corporate Record Services sends out a notice to prepare minutes or records of an annual meeting. Again, this form looks like a government notice charging a fee of $125 with a due date. The moral of the story is to closely read any type of official looking notices when one has recently executed a common transaction such as a deed transfer or filing of incorporation. These records are kept in public databases and businesses pull your information and try to sell you services you do not need hidden in paperwork that makes it appear that you need to pay some type of government fee. Remember to carefully read any documentation and ask questions before you write that check! This article was authored by Keith W. Strohl, an associate Attorney of the Steckel & Stopp Law Firm with offices at Main Street and Walnut Street, Slatington; Schnecksville and Northampton which has been serving the needs of the Lehigh Valley areas for over sixty-five years -advertorial-

foreign language, music, and physical education. Families and staff know that life and education are about more than reading, writing, and arithmetic. Mrs. Amy Hillanbrand remarked, “We are continually humbled and grateful for the generosity of the local community in supporting the gem we have in our school. SJNRS is a shining example of the Catholic Schools Week theme ‘Community of Faith, Knowledge, and Service.’ Our teachers, staff, and families really do all come together as one for our ‘future,’ the students. My boys are flourishing because of their time at SJNRS and I know the foundation they are receiving will be the reason they continue to succeed throughout their lives.” St. John Neumann Regional School has campuses located in both Palmerton and Slatington and educates students in Kindergarten through grade 8. The school hosts an open house every second Thursday of the month in their Slatington campus on W. Washington Street and is prepared for tours at the Palmerton campus as well.

Allentown Funeral Home Offers Eco-Friendly Options by DANIELLE S. TEPPER You’ve heard the old adage “ashes to ashes, dust to dust,” but Nicos (Nick) Elias is taking that a step further by being the premier funeral home in the Lehigh Valley to offer eco-friendly burial options. "The whole concept is going back to the earth naturally," explained Elias. With “green” efforts becoming a more trendy means of doing just about anything these days, it seems only natural to apply such efforts to something so, well, natural. Elias’ mother took him to a funeral home when he was a kid and he was transfixed, he said. “I thought it was unique and different.” He grew up in Allentown and wound up in the family printing business. “My heart wasn’t in it,” he said. “I basically just sat and ran a machine all day.” He reached age 35 and realized he had a decision to make: “Do I take over the family business or do I go back to school? The director of the Funeral Service Education program at NCC convinced me to give it a try even though I thought it was too late in life.” The two-year program is one of only two in the state. The other is in Pittsburgh. “I was lucky it was close by,” said Elias. He graduated in 2000 with his Associate’s degree (he also has a Bachelor’s
in Social Science from Muhlenberg College) and began working with some of the big funeral homes in town to get some experience. He knew, however, that he’d want to eventually operate his own business. “I like being my own boss,” he explained. Finding a funeral home for sale proved a bit difficult though, as most of them stay in the family for years, according to Elias. Instead, a realtor convinced him to take a look at the historic General Trexler Estate, the former location of Marilyn Custom Shop. “I didn’t really want to be downtown, because there are a lot of others in the area,” said Elias. “But the property is nice and the building is laid out well.”He opened in 2008, right around the time the economy took a tumble. People compared prices then more than ever before, which Elias says actually helped him in the long run. Continued on Page 22

Eco-Friendly Funerals Continued from Page 20 “I made sure I had fair prices and treated people well and I went from there,” he said. Even though other area funeral homes will probably provide “green” services if asked, no one promotes it quite like Elias does. “A new start-up is rare,” Elias explained. “So I thought, ‘What am I going to do to set myself apart from the competition and be different?’ It’s a cause I believe in, so I started advertising ecofriendly burials.” So what is an eco-friendly burial exactly? Elias says he is asked that question fairly often. “There’s no embalming, so there’s no chemicals going in the ground,” Elias explained. “We use biodegradable caskets that are either all wood construction, no screws or metal, or we have wicker or bamboo.” Elias says eco-friendly burials are a specialty and Allentown is a traditional area. However, he’s found success in doing what he does. “People don’t respond to it right away, mostly because they’re not sure what it is,” he explained. “They’re afraid the caskets are cardboard boxes or something. It can be, but it doesn’t have to be. The people who have done it, it was something that
they really wanted and the families appreciated that.” The cost of a green funeral is actually about 30% less than a regular burial or cremation (which Elias also offers), but they still remain a neglected service. Elias does maybe four a year. He’s hopeful though: “I don’t think it’s going away,” he said. “It’s good for the environment and people care about that.” For more information on Elias’ green funerals, visit www.eliasfuneralhome.com. Information on eco-friendly products can be found at www. passagesinternational.com. Those looking for a green cemetery can visit Green Meadow at Fountain Hill Cemetery: www.greenmeadowpa. org. Established in 2012, it is the only green cemetery in the Lehigh Valley.

Konkrete Kids Educational Foundation’s “Blast from the Past”
Submitted by CLAUDIA SHULMAN Those who remember the words to the Bobby Darrin classic “Dream Lover,” the Temptations’ “My Girl,” or possibly “Tonight (Could be the Night)” by the Velvets enjoyed an Oldies Dinner Dance sponsored by the Northampton Area Konkrete Kids Educational Foundation (NAKKEF) on April 5 at the Northampton Community Center. Over 330 people attended the fundraiser and they clearly were there to have a blast to the music performed by Desire. Although bobby socks, poodle skirts, and letter sweaters were not visible on the dance floor, the hip dancers were still able to show off their American Bandstand-like moves all evening as the party came to life to such oldies as “16 Candles,” “Happy Birthday, Baby,” and “Why Do Fools Fall in Love?” People danced and sang away the evening and all for a good cause. All money raised will help fund Northampton Area School District programs that enhance the quality of education and provide the school community with extended learning opportunities and co-curricular experiences.

Rescue Pet Meet Blaze
From Mylestone Equine Rescue in Phillipsburg, N.J.: “Blaze is a small (14.2 hands) gelding, approximately 20 years old who arrived at Mylestone in time for Valentine’s Day 2008. Lucky for him! He was taken by Animal Control from an owner who had starved him and refused to care for him properly. Unfortunately, Animal Control was unable to find him a home. Blaze is a gentle boy with a severe swayback condition. Blaze will only be adopted as a companion horse—he is absolutely not ridable! He’s been through plenty and now needs to spend his senior years relaxing with good food, good friends and lots of love. Contact us if you are interested in adopting Blaze and are looking for a companion horse only. Blaze could use your help and support while at Mylestone. You are the rescue horses’ hope. Please sponsor Blaze so we can keep him well-fed, healthy, and happy. Your support means a great deal to us, thank you.” www.mylestone.org
Candice & Champ
Champ is “the classiest golden retriever on Instagram,” according to BuzzFeed.com. He and his human, 21-year-old Candice Sedighan, have been enchanting fans with their whimsical and creative photos for the past year. But the cuteness factor skyrocketed last week when Champ made friends with a group of baby chicks. They’re not new pets; Sedighan explained, “They’ll be going to their permanent home at a community college farm to help with their pre-vet program instead of being sold for meat where they were before.” Happy ending! Wish my golden were this photogenic. View the adventures of Candice and Champ on Instagram (@candiceandchamp) and Facebook (www.facebook. com/CandiceSedighanPhotography).

t’s officially spring and as temps struggle to climb, here are some rainy day activities and DIY hacks to get into the right frame of mind (think flowers and sunshine). —Danielle Tepper
Earth
Earth Day (Tuesday, April 22) is an opportunity to celebrate our planet and show it
some love. Grab the kiddies and prepare to get your hands dirty, we’re goin’ gardening! Visit www.earthday.org for more on this annual appreciation day.
1. Hang a wire basket from a tree branch and fill it with short (about 6 inches) colorful strands of yarn. Nesting birds will use them to spruce up their homes. Then take your kids outside to see if they can spot the colors hiding in your yard. 2. Have your kids give their green thumbs a try with their own little hands-on raised gardening bed and some resilient plants. The beds can be found at Home Depot or attempt to DIY for less money. 3. April showers got you down? Grab some paint and a few rocks and create some critters for the garden; it brings a pop of color to all that green.
Environment
Reduce, reuse, recycle. You’ve heard it before and it’s now easier than ever to repurpose items as a way to “go green” and cut down on the amount of waste that is harmful to the environment, such as: 1. Using an old wooden pallet to organize a DIY herb garden. 2. Turning an empty plastic milk carton into a watering can. 3. Creating tiny elegant hanging planters out of burnt-out light bulbs. 4. Inviting birds for a cup o’seed by gluing a chipped mug to a saucer and hanging it in a tree.
… and don’t forget Easter
Easter Sunday is April 20. Prepare for the bunny’s arrival with these fun projects. 1. Forget the hassle of egg dying and opt instead for colorful crayon art. While the eggs are still warm from being hard-boiled, draw and scribble on the shells. The wax will melt as you go and create a fun design when cool. 2. Create little nest cupcakes using Whoppers’ Robin Eggs and a fine-tipped icing bag attachment. 3. Decorate your kitchen with this bright centerpiece. All you need are two square glass vases (one large, one small), then jellybeans, Peeps, and large flowers in the color of your choosing.

FernGully Wanted Us to Save the Rainforest “Everything in our world is connected by the delicate strands of the web of life, which is a balance between the forces of destruction and the magical forces of creation.” When you’re a kid watching cartoons, subliminal messages don’t quite reach you. It isn’t until you look back on some of your favorite films years later that you realize what you were learning. As a ‘90s kid, everything I watched had hidden layers, particularly Disney films. Bambi? Anti-hunting. 101 Dalmatians? Anti-fur. The Rescuers Down Under? Anti-poaching. Other films throughout the years (Free Willy, Wild America, Beethoven) all held deeper meaning for the ramifications of selfish human action, but one of my favorites when I was little was an animated anthem for saving the rainforest. I’m talking, naturally, about FernGully. FernGully: The Last Rainforest was a 1992 tale of fairies who work to protect their habitat from deforestation. Crysta befriends Zak (an Australian 16-year-old with no Australian accent) who’s spending the summer working for a logging company. Crysta accidentally shrinks him and they spend the next indeterminable number of days learning about each other. Zak, a city kid, doesn’t understand the importance of trees. Crysta, a wood nymph, doesn’t understand how you can live without trees. (“Trees give life. They make the clouds, the water, the air.”) Although released in the same year, FernGully was actually Robin Williams’ first experience lending his voice to an animated character, not Aladdin. He gave erratic life to Batty Koda, an escaped subject from a “biology lab.” You want subliminal messages, just pay close attention to the horrifying lyrics of his anti-animal testing rap: “I been brain-fried, electrified, infected and injectified, vivosectified and fed pesticides […] They used and abused me, battered and bruised me, red wires green wires stuck 'em right through me.” In spite of that, Williams’ perfectly timed humor alleviated the film when it started getting too dark. Speaking of dark, the crisis of the film lies in the return of a destructive force known as Hexxus. Tim Curry (Rocky Horror) voiced the villain, an oil-slicked blob of brown goo who grew into a noxious black cloud, then, eventually a terrifying skeletal figure that gave me nightmares. (I was 5. Rated G? I don’t think so.) Hexxus is hell-bent on destroying FernGully. Does he? It’s worth a watch. The film was dedicated to “Our children and our children’s children.” Proceeds were donated to the Australian rainforest. Junior Naturalists Club Forming At Lehigh Gap Nature Center Submitted by DAN R. KUNKLE Lehigh Gap Nature Center (LGNC) is forming a new club of nature explorers. The club is free and open to all elementary-aged students currently in grades 2 through 6. Club members will explore the habitats of the Nature Center and beyond and will learn about birds, butterflies, bees, native plants, and other creatures. They will also explore forests, grasslands, ponds, the Lehigh River, and the habitat gardens at LGNC’s visitor and education center, the Osprey House. There will also be occasional field trips to other natural areas. The organizational meeting of the LGNC Junior Naturalists Club will be on Saturday, April 19 at 10 a.m. Come prepared to go for a short nature walk outside that morning. The schedule of club meetings will be determined by the participants. In addition to LGNC staff serving as the club leaders, the members of LGNC’s Naturalist Club for middle and high school students will serve as mentors for the Young Naturalists. Parents will also be asked to participate from time to time, especially for field trips that require car pools. LGNC asks parents to contact the Nature Center to register your children in the club so we care prepare for the first meeting. Register by contacting the Center at lgnc@ptd.net or 610-7608889 and give us the name of the child/children
that will participate. Unregistered children will be welcome as well, but we hope to have a good idea of how many participants to expect. The Lehigh Gap Nature Center is a member-supported, wildlife conservation and environmental education organization with its office located at the Osprey House in Lehigh Gap. For more information about the Center and its programs, contact them or check their website at http://lgnc.org.

“We put pressure on ourselves every year to be a contender at the end of the year,” admitted 13th year head coach, Scott Trumbauer. “We have had a great start to the season which only magnifies the target, but the guys have been in pressure situations in the past and I expect them to handle it well.” The Trojans, who are the defending Lehigh Valley Conference champions, are dealing with the rest of the league aiming at them quite well. Through April 10, Parkland boasted an 11-2 record, with their only losses coming to out-of-district foes, Northeastern and Central York, both of which are perennial state tournament contenders nearly every year. Trumbauer’s troop is considered the favorite by opponents and aficionados to sweep this spring claiming the LVC division, LVC conference, and District 11 titles on their way to the PIAA tournament, despite the fact that they are returning so few players from last year’s LVC North Division winning team. “We actually only returned four players from last year’s team. This is a lower number than we are used to, but the guys have really played well this early in the season,” explained Trumbauer. “The new guys have blended in well with the returners, which has helped the chemistry while they are on the court. The longer they play next to

each other, the more fluid we should be.” One individual that is helping that cause while piling wins along the way is senior Libero Chris Schweikert, who according to Trumbauer, “has been our defensive anchor for the past 2 seasons.” Along with Schweikert are fellow seniors Tyler Phifer, Derrik Rice, and Mitchell Fox. Trumbauer noted that sophomore setter Andrew Hillman will be playing an integral part in their race to the postseason. With about eight matches left in the season and a seat atop the LVC with a league record of 6-0 through April 10, Trumbauer won’t settle. “I want to see continuous improvement,” he said. “I've coached teams in the past who peaked too early and didn't have anything left at the end of the season. If you continue to improve as the year goes on, the guys should be peaking around playoff time.” The Trojans have not been tested too much thus far, rarely needing to go past three sets in a given match. They are still working hard, however, to prime themselves for a run at the various titles to add to Parkland High School’s crowded trophy case.

Mallory Bomboy Softball Tournament Submitted by CHARLIE MAURER The Mallory Bomboy Memorial Softball Tournament Committee along with the Parkland League, Eagle’s Nest Softball and the Lehigh Valley Umpires Association are pleased to announce that the 8th annual softball tournament will be held on Saturday, April 26, with rain date of Sunday, April 27. Around 1,500 girls from 30 different softball organizations are expected to participate in this great event. The games will be played on fields at Eagle’s Nest as well as fields at Ormrod, Hokey, Lehigh Twp. With the help of sponsors and participants in the last seven years, nearly $80,000 was raised in Mallory’s memory. Mallory was a senior at Northern Lehigh when she died in a tragic car accident in 2006. Mallory’s enthusiasm, team spirit, and zest for life touch a lot of hearts and her loss is still being felt throughout the community. The officers and the Bomboy family have distributed $30,000 for college scholarships to several Parkland League senior students from different high schools. $18,000 has been given back to the family’s Mallory Bomboy Scholarship. At Christmas, the Committee helped a local family to have a better Christmas. We also have made donations in the memory of two local umpire’s
families after their unfortunate and untimely deaths. And finally, we have donated $6,000 to the Eagle’s Nest Building Fund. This money has helped them develop a multi-purpose building at Eagle’s Nest which will benefit the entire Northern Lehigh community. Come out and visit Eagle’s Nest and see that the building is now a reality. The last several years, $3,500 was donated to Coplay Sports, whose building was destroyed by fire and is once again operating. Also thousands of dollars were donated to Laurys, Northwestern, Ormrod, West End Youth Center, Palmerton, Salisbury, and Hokendauqua Softball organizations to help make improvements to their softball facilities. Funds raised in this year’s tournament will be distributed in a similar manner. One-third of the proceeds will go towards scholarships for current Parkland Softball League Seniors, one-third for the family’s Mallory Bomboy Scholarship, and one-third will be donated to some of the participating organizations that are in the process of a community capital improvement project. Needy families in our area will also be helped. Each of the players pay an entrance fee of $10, for which in return they receive a memorial T-shirt, play two games and make a donation to the cause. Umpires agree to officiate the games at a much reduced cost, with many donating their fee back to the tournament. At least 80 teams are anticipated, ranging from ages 5-19. Plan on attending some of the games at the many locations and support the cause by eating or drinking at the fully stocked refreshment stands. There will be drawings with great prizes and fun for the whole family. The tournament will conclude with a Ceremony at 7:30 p.m. at the Lehigh Twp. sports complex, followed by 422 W. Frank two games under the lights at 8 p.m. For more information, you can contact Charlie Maurer at 610-767-8084.
