From The Editor’s Desk. Joe Korba If I had to use one word to describe the Gazette and what we do, it would be Community. The Blue Mountain Town & Country Gazette has been a fixture in the area for going on three decades. Sure, we evolved with the times, developed an online presence, and expanded our reach from Lehigh Township into surrounding counties and communities. But, our mission statement is the same, to be a local resource for news, events, and businesses in your hometown. While many print publications are going the way of the dinosaurs, we have managed to find a model that works for us, and that model is very simple: Keep It Local. Our office in Walnutport has an open door policy, between 8 and 5 on weekdays at least. One of the nicest things since I started working as editor of the Gazette two years ago is meeting all of the friendly people who have fond memories of our publication from years gone by. I really like to think that the Town & Country Gazette is a natural offshoot of our area’s culture and small-town roots. We have, literally, generations of families who have published birth announcements

and engagement photos in our pages. It’s truly awesome to be a part of it. So, as always, I hope all of you guys, our readers and community, enjoy this issue!

incorporated into keepsake items. The logo design competition is open to anyone who lives, works, or goes to school in or around the Borough of Slatington. If you love Slatington, you are also invited to join the fun and submit an entry. All submissions will be reviewed and judged by the committee. The winner will be announced in early May and will be recognized and awarded prizes. Entrants are asked to consider the rich history of Slatington as well as the architecture, monuments, landscape, that make up the borough you call home. Submissions can be emailed to the Anniversary Committee at Slatington150@gmail.com or dropped off to Alice Wanamaker at the Blue Mt. Town & Country Gazette office, 4685 Lehigh Drive, Walnutport (Berlinsville) PA. Please be sure to include the following information with your entry: Name, address, phone number, email address and a brief narrative explaining your design choices. The goal of the competition is to give local artists of all levels the opportunity to create a logo that will be incorporated into the anniversary celebration, as well as help kick-off the celebrations. If you have any questions, please call Alice at 610-7679600.

The Mallory Bomboy Memorial Softball Tournament committee along with the Parkland League, Eagle’s Nest Softball and the Lehigh Valley Umpires Association are pleased to announce that the 7th annual softball tournament will be held on Saturday, April 27th, with a rain date of Sunday, April 28th. Organizers are expecting around 1500 girls from 30 different softball organizations to participate in this great event. The Committee hopes to make this year’s tournament bigger and better than prior years. The games will be played at fields at Eagle’s Nest as well as fields at Ormrod, Hokey, Lehigh Twp. and Laury’s Station. Funds raised in this year’s tournament will be distributed as follows; one-third of the proceeds will go towards Scholarships for current Parkland Softball League Seniors, one-third for the family's Mallory Bomboy Scholarship, and one-third will be donated to one of the participating organizations that are in the process of a community capital improvement project. Needy families in our area will also be helped. At least 90 teams are anticipated, ranging from ages 5-19. Plan on attending some of the games at the many locations and support the cause by eating or drinking at the fully stocked refreshment stands. There will be drawings with great prizes and fun for the whole family. The tournament will conclude with a Ceremony at 7:30 p.m. at the Lehigh Twp. sports complex, followed by two games under the lights at 8:00 p.m. For more information, you can contact Charlie Maurer at 610-767-8084.

One week left for Submissions The Slatington Anniversary Committee, lead by Christy Haydt and Ed Bechtel, would like to remind the community that the deadline for the Logo Contest is only a week away. All entries are due no later than 5 p.m. on Wednesday April 24th. Everyone is invited to enter the Slatington 150th Anniversary Logo Design Contest. The logo will be prominently featured during all anniversary celebration events, on all marketing and publicity materials including merchandising, website and social media, printed materials, as well as

In addition to making donations to any one of the local rescues, you may also sponsor a shelter pet Maranatha Farm's Animal Sanctuary in Kempton is a 501(c) (3) non-profit Animal Rescue Organization with a lifetime commitment care Sanctuary for un-adopted, retired, and special needs animals. At present, they are lovingly caring for the lifetime needs of over 50 animals including dogs, cats, horses, and a rooster! Contact them for more info on how you can help! Isaiah - Quarterhorse [Mix] Large adult, male. About: Isaiah is the oldest of two rescued PMU foals. He is now 9 years old. He and his full brother Timothy, who is almost exactly one year younger, are Cremello Quarterhorse geldings who were born to a Premarin Mare on a ranch out west. At first glance they look like twins; but they are more like mirror images actually since their manes fall on opposite sides. They are sweet, very people friendly and love to welcome visitors (looking for treats of course!) Please consider sponsoring Isaiah! He will love you forever! An elderly gentleman had serious hearing problems for a number of years. He got fitted for a set of hearing aids that allowed him to hear 100%. He went back in a month to the doctor and the doctor said, “your hearing is perfect. Your family must be really pleased that you can hear again.” To which the gentleman said, “Oh, I haven’t told my family yet. I just sit around and listen to the conversations. I’ve changed my will three times already!”

Those who use frozen diet meals often argue that these are the easiest way for a busy person to get a healthful, low-calorie meal. If the alternatives are eating high-fat choices from fastfood restaurants or cafeterias, or simply snacking on a variety of snack foods instead of bothering to fix a meal “from scratch,” these frozen meals

look pretty good. However, in the long run, this can promote an all-ornothing mentality: When the frozen meals are not available, people go back to their old habits because they haven’t learned how to make other healthful choices that fit their lifestyle. Calories Too Low: Some people look for meals as low in fat and calories as possible. Products that boast their meals being “less than 300 calories” is actually too low in calories for many people. If calories are spread fairly evenly through the day, which is recommended, then such a meal was designed for someone who eats only 1,000 calories a day. Those having a diet of 1,000 to 1,200 calories are really eating too low to meet

the metabolic needs of most adults. This causes stress on the body, hormones, rising cortisol levels, sluggish thyroid, metabolic damage. If calorie intake is limited to 1,000 to 1,200 calories, metabolic rate will slow down, making weight control more difficult. Metabolism is the burning of energy (calories). Not enough veggies: Many people who aim for such a low calorie intake end up so hungry or low on energy that they start grabbing snacks high in calories and lacking in nutrients after only a few hours. Not only are these “under 300 calorie” meals too low in calories to satisfy you for a few hours, they also tend to provide only a small fraction of the vegetables, fruits and grains you need. “Current recommendations to promote overall health and lower cancer risk call for a total of five to eleven servings of vegetables and fruits a day.” It’s the QUALITY of the foods that promote overall wellness and physique changes! Remember….if the food is our medicine, then it’s the food that has the role in bettering us! High in sodium: Sodium content is another concern. Frozen meals that aren’t identified as reduced-sodium or heart-healthy often contain from 700 to 1,800 milligrams (mg) of sodium. That is extremely high when one is “salt sensitive” (has high blood pressure) or for the simple fact that

Page 25

the more water we retain from sodium dense foods, the less efficient we burn fat! Some tips if you do eat frozen meals: First, use the Nutrition Facts label on a frozen dinner or entrée to help you choose one that is low in fat and sodium, and use the product as a base for a quick, nutritious meal. Round out the meal with extra fruit or vegetables and perhaps a wholegrain roll. But don’t fall into the same trap as people who only know how to diet by following pre-planned fad menus. If you decide to use them, frozen meals should be just one of the many ways that you create balanced meals and appropriate portions.

The Scoop By Candi Lynne

Once you have decided to bring a dog into your home and family, your may wonder, Do I go to a shelter or rescue group or a pet store? Shelters and rescue groups have many a dog in search of a home; all different breeds, ages, shapes and sizes. You may ask yourself: What is it about that dog in which the owners gave him away? In reality, it is not the dog's fault he has no home. What actually could a dog do, that could warrant him banished from his family? Whether it is life's circumstances or lack of commitment - either way, it's not the dog's fault. When going to a shelter, many times it is loud from all the barking, eyes are staring at you, following you as you walk by. Do you think, how unruly, the dogs are by barking too much? Try to put yourself in their "paws". They no longer have the family lifestyle they are used to and now live in a kennel. People come by, look at them and leave. They want your attention - give us a chance. Rescue groups take in either specific breeds or mixed breeds. Rescue just like shelters want to give that dog a second chance for a forever home. A dog lives within his foster home, until he finally finds his forever home. Of course, adopting a dog either from a shelter or a rescue group, is another

adjustment period in this dog's life and only you can ease his adjustment to become the dog in your family. You stop by a pet store. Such cute puppies are in those cages, and as in rescue and shelters, they are looking for a home. But stop and think, from where did these puppies come from? A reputable breeder would not put their pups in a pet store, so where do they come from? Puppy mills. A factory, a warehouse - a mill, is where they come from. Where the parents of the pups do not have the proper life, veterinary care or socialization. They live in squalor producing one litter after another til they no longer can and they then are "disposed of". The more puppies bought from a pet store, the more the mill will breed over and over again to meet the demand of puppies. Adopting is a better option. You are saving a life,

Page 29

the dogs are grateful and you are not contributing to a puppy mill. The adoption fees are lower than buying from a pet store. Yes, there are protocols you must go thru to adopt and the reason being is the shelters and rescue want to make sure their dogs go to the right home. Pet stores actually are not concerned about that. They are just looking to make a sale. Adopting from a shelter or rescue, you will know your future dog has gone thru a full medical exam and any health issues taken care of. Training and socializing the dog will take place in rescues and shelters. Most of all you are saving a life by adopting. Highly consider adopting in your search for your faithful companion, who in turn will be utmost grateful that you saved his life by giving him the home he so deserves. Please adopt and not shop!

Extra Point by Tyler Trumbauer

K-Kids are Confident on the Diamond

Confidence and fun. Those are two words that are synonymous with Northampton softball since head coach Sally Whittaker-Kahan took over four years ago. Since her era as a K-Kid began back in 2008, the softball team has seen a lot of success as Whittaker-Kahan possessed a 58-35 career record entering this season. The confidence and fun has carried over to this season. Also so far, so has the success. At the time of print, Northampton boasted a 5-0 record in the Lehigh Valley Conference and a 9-0 record overall. Whittaker-Kahan’s team has a plethora of enthusiastic seniors that are leading this high-spirited bunch. The chemistry of this ball club is excellent due to their head coach’s mantra on the diamond. “I always believed that confidence breeds victory. I always want the team to be in good

spirits no matter what the outlook is.” WhittakerKahan said. “If you aren't having fun playing softball, then we have a problem.” The K-Kids are having fun and notching the victories at the same time. Defense has been a huge factor in this early triumph as they have only allowed seven runs to cross the plate in nine games. With that being said, their offensive firepower is lethal. Through those nine first games, Northampton has mustered 58 runs.. -----------------------------------------

“If you aren’t having fun playing softball, then we have a problem.”

----------------------------------------Whittaker-Kahan told me in an e-mail that she noticed that phenomenal offensive production. “We saw some really good hitting all up and down the lineup. That is very promising... and the bats need to stay consistent.” With the output from the senior sisters of Megan and Erin Tiwold combined with the bat of junior Hannah Peters this team is on a path that includes high-scoring affairs and accumulating a few more in the win column along the way. Starting off the season on such a hot streak can sometimes cause a team to lose focus. However Continued on Page 34

Extra Point Continued from Page 33 the K-Kids are striving to keep level heads through it all. Whittaker-Kahan proudly said, “I believe that we need to stay positive and confident, but also practice humility. The attitudes need to be consistent and so far they are good!” This group of young ladies is not going to dwell on the past. They are determined to continue this in to the second half of the regular season and hopefully into the playoffs. “We need to be hungry for the win, focus on taking care of the little things, and continue working on the fundamentals of the game to further this success,” WhittakerKahan said. Northampton is dealing with some great opponents in the LVC such as Parkland and Bethlehem Catholic, just to name a few. That grueling league schedule will be daunting down the stretch. However this squad has the skills to make it happen.

On Friday, February 15th, the 6th, 7th and 8th grade students of St. John Neumann School raised $811.00 during their Bowl-a-thon, held at Spare Time Bowling in Slatington. Each student went out and collected pledges in Michael’s name. They also wanted to donate the proceeds to support life. The $811 raised was donated to MARY’S SHELTER in Bethlehem. Mary’s Shelter serves the needs of homeless, pregnant young women, preparing mothers with newborns for independent living and a vision of hope for the future. To donate to the Michael E. Kulp Memorial fund, please contact Sister Virginia Stephanie at 610-826-2354.

St. John Neumann School celebrates life

This year the St. John Neumann Regional School family experienced a profound loss. Last fall, Michael Kulp, a seventh grader at the school, died very unexpectedly in a four-wheeler accident. As a result of this tragedy, the students have become very close and protective of each other, family and friends. The students decided to do something important to honor Michael, so they decided to hold a Bowl-A-Thon to celebrate his life.

April 17, 1958 Spring arriving reminds one of the many peddlers who always began to travel around when spring came. In winter many of them were in the county poor house and when the weather became warm, they started to wander about with their bundle on their back. Some repaired umbrellas, some tin ware, others carved comb boxes out of wood and sold them, and some of the peddlers had bundles on their backs with all kinds of stuff, like lovely strings, handkerchiefs, stockings, hair pins and so on. It was always a great pleasure to see them unpack, but to listen to their persistent soliciting was something else again. I can still well remember how some of my uncles had a little fun with one. One of those peddlers came one time when my uncles were sawing wood. When he asked if they needed anything, they said, “Yes.” He started to unpack and asked, “Do you need this; do you need that?” “No,” they replied each time. So he continued till he was at the bottom of the bag. At last he said, “Well my dear people; what do you need?” “Well! We need saw files,” they replied. “Expletive [fill in your own],” said the peddler, “that I don’t have,” and he began repacking his bundle and left abruptly.

Page 51

[How many of you have seen peddlers [or hucksters, as my family called them,] in your area when you were growing up? I can not remember peddlers walking around our neighborhood when I was young, but we had one that drove a station wagon. He had that machine completely loaded up to the roof with all sorts of things like clothing, and pots and pans, and he had just enough room to sit behind the steering wheel. Please let us know what you remember about the peddlers.]

Easter - 2013 Need some ideas to add suspense and bring out the creativity in your family? Want to make some good memories at the holiday? Here are some ideas our family would like to share. In March, grandchildren of Beverly and Wilson Putt decided to have a family contest of creative, edible foods for Easter. It was decided that the whole family would vote for the categories: Best presentation, creativity, and taste. Everyone was ready for the competition on Easter Day with their creations! Everyone wondering who would win? The entries were very impressive! Everyone took the contest seriously and put forth their best efforts!! The Hantz household submitted four entries. Keith made an egg shaped meatloaf trimmed with cheese strips; Karen made a full-sized bunny sitting on a bed of grass (coconut dyed green); Karlee made a bunny family of strawberries (iced faces with almond ears); and Karissa made an appetizer, a pizza shaped dough with a layer of cream cheese and sour cream topped with grated carrots in the center, chopped parsley and chopped green pepper on the edges. Each slice resembled a carrot. Karlee and Karissa tied to win the competition for "taste." The Morrisons competed with a bread and two desserts. Robin made her Easter bread recipe baked with colored eggs included on top of the bread which is a traditional part of the Easter meal; Regan Rose made little chicks made from one cupcake on top of another and beaks of chocolate. She also made cupcakes decorated on top with flowers made of laffy taffy. Her brother, Sean, put the taffy in the microwave to warm it and make it more pliable. He helped with the project too by creating flowers. Kelsey, who won the creative part of the contest, made an entry entitled "Mr. McGregor's Garden." Her dessert was a chocolate eclair dessert with chocolate topping (the ground) and orange cupcakes (carrots) peeking out of the ground with white chocolate tinted green for the carrot tops. She put extra "carrots" in a basket

aside of the main dish. Some carrots were made by spreading orange colored icing over ice cream cones holding cupcakes, also with the green chocolate tops. The Costas displayed three items. Susan made little chicks of deviled eggs, the caps of the eggs colored in Easter colors. Amy made carrot cupcakes covered with green grass (colored coconut) and baby carrots in the grass. Oldest daughter, Courtney's eye-catching creation, the winner for "presentation," was a spectacular "Cupcake Bouquet" in a large ceramic flower pot. Courtney enlisted extra family help for her dessert. Her husband, Jimmy, rolled the fondant whch was used for the petals of flowers on top of the multi-colored pastel cupcakes and his mother, Susan, helped with the project by hot gluing green stirrers on the bottom of clear plastic cups which were used to hold the cupcakes and served as the picks or stems of the flowers in the flower pot.. The cupcakes were placed in flower shaped wrappers inside the clear cups. Jimmy and Courtney said it took more than one day to accomplish and both agreed that it was a very time consuming effort. "It was a lot of work." As for Grandmother's idea, she made something that could be made ahead of time, nest favors. She coated chow mein noodles with dark chocolate and made little nests; added coconut (colored green) in the center for grass and added three jelly beans in the center for eggs. The nest favors were personalized with each family member's name in the nest. She did not win! It was a most interesting day and everyone was impressed with each other's ideas and manual skills. Many pictures were taken to show coworkers and friends and the contest will be remembered by everyone. As for the sampling, it was very hard to try each and every entry. After the Easter meal, there were so many desserts to sample. It certainly provided some good eating and the contest provided good memories for the whole family!

In one’s senior year, students took competitive examinations to qualify for college admission; the comprehensive test took about 10 hours to complete.” Radu was admitted to theTrianVuia Polytechnical Institute and successfully completed a 5-year program as a chemical engineer. The teachers in the educational system were excellent. The young engineer’s first position was as a junior process engineer at a local chemical complex which at its peak employed 8000 workers. He recalls,“After 6 months, I was drafted into the Army. Military service was compulsory, ranging from 6 months to two years.” I asked about their exposure to western culture. Radu replied, “We had access to films and magazines. There was one television channel functioning four times daily and six or more on Sundays.” Some of Radu’s relatives came to the United States in the 1920’s and settled in Youngstown, Ohio. Romania had a Revolution in 1989, so the Lungu’s decided to leave their homeland for the United States in search of new opportunities. Mr. Lungu recalls, “It was heart rendering, a difficult decision. My wife and I came to America with the assistance of our cousins, but my parents and two children remained in Romania. Within a year, my children were in Youngstown. My father, a plant supervisor, and my mother a teacher, remained in Romania.” “I was fortunate to be employed as a chemist in an Environmental Laboratory analyzing both industrial and medical components.” In 1995,

he added to his educational resume by earning a master’s degree in Civil and Environmental Engineering at Youngstown State. In 2006, Essroc hired Radu as the Plant’s Environmental Engineer at the Bessemer, Penna. Plant. In 2009, Mr. Lungu brought his expertise to the Nazareth Plant. I asked about his responsibilities. He replied, “I work closely with Federal and State regulations making sure we comply with a multitude of regulations, which probably require 30% of my time. We continue to have a good relationship with their governmental agencies. I especially enjoy interacting with people; human aspects are important in any position.” Mr. Lungu said, “We were welcomed with open arms when we arrived in the Lehigh Valley.” I found Radu to be a humble, amiable and dedicated Essroc employee, a fine gentleman who brought a rich cultural heritage to the United States. He has been married to wife Aliana, a Lehigh University Chemical Engineer for 30 years. They are proud of daughter Ana and son Vlad, both University of Pittsburgh graduates. They reside in Lehigh Township and enjoy Northampton’s Roxy Theatre. I wish Radu and all my friends at Essroc a safe and prosperous 2013.
