From the Publisher’s Desk
Joe Korba
When I first started working for the Gazette back in 2011, one of the first things that struck me was how environmentally conscious all of the people working on the paper were. My boss at the time, Alice, was serious about cutting back on waste and recycling and I hope to carry on our tradition of conservation as we move forward. It’s not easy in the printing business, but I think we do our best not to be wasteful. Personally, I try to do my part for the planet. I’m a big locally-sourced food advocate and try to recycle and reuse as much as possible. As you can probably garner from this intro, this is our annual “Go Green” edition. As always, I hope you all enjoy it and maybe even pick up a good “green” tip or two. B L U E MOU N TAI N

Touchstone Journey Nears Mythic Conclusion Submitted by LISA JORDAN
The panel discussion to be held as part of Touchstone Theatre’s Journey from the East community-based project has moved to Saturday, April 25. The panel discussion will still be held in Touchstone Theatre (321 East Fourth Street, Bethlehem, PA 18015) at 6 p.m. directly following the Journey from the East performance on the 200 Block of the South Bethlehem Greenway. The panelists are Bob Kilker, a Visiting Assistant Professor of English at Kutztown University, and Christopher Shorr, Touchstone Associate/Moravian College Director of Theatre, discussing the American Western as our cultural mythology, moderated by Bill Bly, dramaturg for the Journey from the East project. The event is free with donations welcomed. In addition, there will be a new exhibit on display in the Touchstone Gallery by Deng Dafei and He Hai of the Utopia Group of China. The artwork displayed includes paintings created as promotional pieces for the show, such as the full size poster and postcard image, and “mash-up” imagery of Journey to the West’s Monkey King as an American Cowboy. It will also include works of art created by Utopia Group with community members during workshops held throughout the Lehigh Valley. The gallery exhibit is free. Doors are open during the performance weekends (April 18, 19, 25, and 26) and Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Call ahead for an appointment.

Meet the Staff
What is your favorite Easter memory? Joe Korba Associate Publisher
My favorite Easter memory is dying eggs with my parents—those cheap Paas dye kits still trigger nostalgia.
Danielle Tepper Editor
When my cousins were still young, we would have annual egg hunts at my grandparents’ house in Hazlet, NJ. There were 7-8 kids running around the yard at once and it ended with a delicious ham dinner. It got more fun as we got older—the eggs were filled with candy and money.
Catherine Stroh Publishing Assistant
I don't get really big into Easter, but my favorite memories and the things I look forward to most about it are painting eggs (of course) and the candy—mainly Reese's eggs because they contain more peanut butter than the regular kind.
Tony Pisco Art Director
I always liked it when I was a kid and we did Easter egg hunts at our house—and if the weather was warm enough, we’d even be able to go outside to look for the eggs.
Alice Wanamaker Editorial Assistant
I grew up on S. Walnut Street in Slatington, so the Roosevelt playground was my “backyard.” Every year, the Playground Association hosted an Easter egg hunt for the kids. I always loved going out and trying to find the lucky egg—plus, there were always treats even if I didn’t get one filled with money. P.S. Pink fluffy Easter dresses were my least favorite part!
Donna Bachman Accounting Manager
Easter is hit-or-miss as far as weather each year. I remember walking to church one Easter Sunday with my sisters—all dressed up with curls and our white dress shoes—in about 3 inches of snow!
Kim Roman Advertising Sales Associate
30 years ago when all our cousins lived here in PA, we would go to our Aunt Mary’s farm, hunt for Easter eggs, and take rides on the go-cart throughout the property after dinner.

Mac-n-Cheese Pie with Bacon Lattice Recipe courtesy of BuzzFeed.com.
Ingredients Mac-n-Cheese Filling:
• 5 slices thick-cut bacon, cut into 1-inch pieces • 4 cups dried macaroni • 4 tbsp butter (½ stick) • 4 tbsp flour • 2.5 cups heavy cream • 2 tsp mustard powder • 1 egg yolk • 1 lb. grated cheese, equal parts Gruyere, sharp cheddar, and Brie (no rind) • Kosher salt • Freshly ground black pepper
Bacon Lattice:
• 8 slices bacon • 1 tbsp brown sugar
Crust:
See ingredients and directions on BuzzFeed. com for homemade crust; I used store bought.
Directions
Preheat oven to 375F. Prick chilled crust in pie dish all over with a fork. Line crust with foil or parchment paper, fill liner with dried beans or pie weights. Bake 25 minutes. Remove from oven, lift out foil and weights. Reduce temperature to 350F. Bake again. Use fork to prick any bubbles that may have formed. Crust should be light golden brown, about 2 minutes longer. Let cool completely. Boil pasta to al dente, following directions on the package. Cook bacon pieces in a saute pan until crispy, drain on paper towels, and set aside. In a large pot, melt butter. Stir in the flour. Whisk

to combine and cook for 1-2 minutes. Add cream and whisk again, let cook, whisking occasionally, for 5-10 minutes until thickened. Add mustard power and whisk to combine. Temper egg yolk into the mixture. Add all the cheese, stir to combine. Season with salt and pepper. Add macaroni and cooked bacon pieces to cheese sauce, then add more pepper to taste. Preheat oven to 425F. Fill the baked piecrust with the mac-n-cheese filling. You’ll use all but 1 or 2 cups. Weave a lattice with 8 bacon slices, 4 in one direction and 4 in the other. Keep them as long as possible, as they will shrink. Spread brown sugar on bacon strips, then bake for 15 minutes or until bacon is cooked. Serve warm. First things first, I was a little nervous about the bacon lattice. I’m not really sure why, because it turned out fine. Between Thompson’s homemade bacon and a bit of brown sugar on top, it was perfection! I was also hesitant about the Brie and Gruyere cheese; I am very picky when it comes to cheese outside of my comfort zone. I used more cheddar, since that is my safe cheese. The Brie pleasantly surprised me and I used less than what was called for the Gruyere. I had a ridiculous amount of macaroni left over; you could probably cut the amount of that in half. I threw away quite a bit of noodles and made an entirely different casserole with the leftover cheesy noodles that did not fit in the pie. Good luck and enjoy!

Steven Hyde | That '70s Show Played by Danny Masterson
Best Bad Boys of TV (conclusion)
Just in case you missed our last few issues, let’s refresh: You gotta love a good bad boy. That quintessential television character always seems two-dimensional on the page until they get fleshed out into living, breathing, brooding boys who don’t want your heart, but you’re still compelled to yank it from your chest and give it to them anyway. It’s up to the actors who play them to let their softer side show through just enough to make you love/hate them and look forward to the next time they grace your screen. I shuffled through my long list of favorite shows in my head and realized that almost every single one had one of those leather jacket-wearing, motorcycle-riding, look-me-in-the-eyes-andswoon kind of guys. So POP was broken into segments and we’ve explored this topic for the past couple issues. (Because I said so.) Last issue, I covered characters from NBC’s short-lived “Smash,” CW’s primetime soap “One Tree Hill,” and ‘90s gem “Full House.” This has been a lot of fun, but we’ve finally reached the end of my list. And now, the conclusion of TV’s baddest boys:
Avery Barkley | Nashville Played by Jonathan Jackson Avery came to Nashville to jump-start his career as a famous musician and completely disregarded his girlfriend’s own talent and ambition in the process. After destroying his relationship with his college honey by being willing to sleep his way to the top, Avery realizes he’s on a path he doesn’t want to follow. He instead becomes a roadie for a starlet’s tour, which works out in his favor—two seasons later, he’s a successful producer, happily married, and expecting a bouncy baby girl with said starlet. The complete list of the Best Bad Boys of TV:
Hyde’s appeal lied within the fact that despite his tough guy exterior, it was hard for him to hide when he truly cared. One of my favorite episodes is when he cheats on Jackie, thinking it’s payback, but he’s actually made a terrible mistake in hurting the one person he’s ever really loved. While I’m totally crazy about the fact that Jackie and Kelso became a real life love story, I always liked her character with Hyde better. She softened him up.
Noah Puckerman (Puck) | Glee Played by Mark Salling Puck wasn’t given much depth to start; he was just your typical bullying jock who thought a letter jacket and a mohawk gave him license to rule the halls of McKinley High. He finally got a dose of his own medicine after joining the Glee Club and not a moment too soon. His evolution from meathead to Air Force gentleman was sweet to watch, especially knowing he ends the series reunited with his high school sweetheart with whom he shares a daughter (even though she was given up for adoption).
BONUS Derek Wills | Smash Played by Jack Davenport One of my favorite characters in the short-lived series about the dreams and drama of Broadway, Derek oozed with British charm and biting sarcasm. A far cry from the uppity James Norrington Davenport portrayed in “Pirates of the Caribbean,” Derek was the director everyone wanted to helm their show, despite his tough love approach. Like most men, he had a hard time dealing with what he frequently doled out, and it hurt to watch him get crushed by the leading ladies who didn’t want his heart. Are any of these bad boys your own faves? Did I miss someone that you think outranks these gents?
1. Daryl Dixon 2. Shawn Hunter 3. Alex Karev 4. Jesse Pinkman 5. Spike 6. Jess Mariano 7. Jimmy Collins 8. Nathan Scott 9. Jesse Katsopolis 10. Avery Barkley 11. Steven Hyde 12. Noah Puckerman BONUS: Derek Wills

Felines of New York
Based on the wildly popular Humans of New York blog run by photographer Brandon Stanton, Felines of New York is a parody on the “Oh sure, New York is great. It’s never occurred to me to live microblogging/social anywhere else. They talk about travel all the time, but I don’t even know networking site Tumblr where I am right now, so why would I need to go somewhere else? I that documents “a glimpse would like to go outside though. There’s birds out there. So many birds. into the lives of New York’s feline inhabitants.” So many birds.” —Maebe, Brooklyn Run by an MTV employee, Jim Tews, it launched a month ago and features portraits of pretty kitties with hilarious imagined quotes from them like, “Sometimes I like to find the most breakable thing on the highest surface, then I like to knock it off.” (Rose of Chinatown) or, “I don’t need anybody. That’s not hyperbole. I literally don’t need you, or anyone. Do not touch me.” (Alex of Harlem) BuzzFeed picked up FONY early last week which stands to reason it will be spreading itself across social media all this month. You can follow Felines of New York on Instagram @felinesofny or Tumblr. Visit felinesofnewyork.com for more peeks inside the villanous minds of New York’s cats.

Submitted by COLIN RICCOBON The American Red Cross encourages eligible donors to give blood during National Volunteer Month this April and make a difference in the lives of patients in need. The Red Cross salutes the hundreds of thousands of volunteers who help fulfill its lifesaving mission and encourages others to join their ranks as volunteer blood donors. Volunteer donors are the only source of blood products for those in need of transfusions. Donors of all blood types—especially those with types O negative, A negative, and B negative—are needed to help ensure blood is available for patients this spring. Those who are unable to give blood can support blood donations and invite others to make a lifesaving donation by creating a SleevesUp virtual blood drive at redcrossblood.org/SleevesUp. To make an appointment to give blood, download the Red Cross Blood Donor App, visit redcrossblood.org, or call 1-800-RED CROSS (1-800733-2767). Upcoming blood donation opportunities will be at the Lou Ramos Center in Allenton on Friday, April 3 from 2 to 7 p.m. and at the Charles Chrin Community Center in Easton on Friday, April 3 from 1 to 6 p.m

For our annual
Go Green
issue, we’re breaking down some easy ways you can help the earth one tiny carbon footprint at a time, plus some DIY ideas for upcycling common household items into brand new treasures. Check them out and do your part to protect the planet!
Contributors: Joe Korba, Tony Pisco, Kim Roman, Cat Stroh, Danielle Tepper, and Alice Wanamaker
RECYCLE
Recycling has never been easier; it just takes that little bit of extra effort to do what’s right for the environment. Some seemingly innocuous items that we use on a daily basis are among the most dangerous and damaging of all, namely these three:
K-Cups
To combat the plastic pandemic, try using BPA-free glass water bottles with a filtration system, such as Brita®—plus they’ve gotten so popular that they now come in fun designs and colors! To learn more, visit www.onegreenplanet.org/ animalsandnature/whats-the-problem-with-plastic-bottles.
Plastic Bags
These little pods of coffee grounds, used with Keurig brewing systems, have exploded in popularity in recent years and the pods have expanded to include more than just coffee; in February of 2014, the company announced plans for Keurig Cold. However, K-Cups have been found to be neither recyclable nor biodegradable and the inventor himself, John Sylvan, has been quoted saying, “I feel bad sometimes that I ever did it.” (The full controversial article on The Atlantic can be found at www.theatlantic.com/technology/ archive/2015/03/the-abominablek-cup-coffee-pod-environmentproblem/386501.) Help #KillTheKCup by sticking with drip coffee makers, no matter how fast you may want your caffeine fix, or by seeking out reusable K-Cup pods that simply require the re-filling of grounds.
Plastic Water Bottles
Some scary statistics surround one of the most common plagues on our planet: • 1,500 plastic water bottles are consumed every second in the United States. • Making the plastic requires over two gallons of water for the purification process of every gallon of water. • The bottle tops are not recyclable and often end up at the bottom of the ocean and in the stomachs of animals mistaking them for food.
Did You Know: There are more than 500 billion and possibly as many as a trillion plastic bags currently in circulation. An estimated 300 million plastic bags end up in the Atlantic Ocean alone and animal deaths from plastic bags are increasing every year from either suffocation or toxicity and intestinal blockage. The breakdown of a plastic bag would literally take hundreds of years, according to the following article on healthguidance.org: www.healthguidance.org/entry/14901/1/ The-Effects-of-Plastic-Bags-on-Environment.html. Some easy alternatives are to purchase some reusable bags, commonly carried by most grocery stores these days, or by turning any plastic bags you have around the house into something new, like a throw rug. Sounds odd, but many people have tried it and instructions can be found simply by doing some internet sleuthing!

UPCYCLE
We all know the concept of recycling; turning in trash so it can become new products all over again. But now the recent trend is to upcycle—to take items that would normally be recycled, get crafty, and keep the items in your home as new trinkets. From Blah To Tada: Turn plain paper
Berry Baskets: Some metallic spray paint and decorative

towel rolls into perfect necklace and bracelet storage* with some hot glue, felt, and a thin slab of wood. *Not ideal for heavier items. Find full instructions at blah-to-tada.blogspot. com/2010/06/craftfairs-jewelry-displays. html.
Mini Piñatas: Remember tearing through a box of cereal to
get to the prize inside? This takes that childhood fun to the next level. All you need for this fun project is cereal boxes, Goldilocks Who: Turn the three bears into golden statues scissors, an X-Acto knife, crepe paper in folds, tape, and or vases with a gold leafing kit or simple spray paint. STAFF SUGGESTIONS ... “I try to grow as many of my own vegetables as I can in a sustainable container garden, to varying degrees of success. Luckily my neighbors are much better at it and are happy to share. Thanks guys!”—JK “We recycle at home. I also try to remember not to leave the water running while brushing my teeth and I have a couple refillable water bottles, one for work and one for home.”—DT “I refuse to use/buy plastic water bottles, we have a Brita at home and I take my reusable glass water bottle with me wherever I need it.”—CS “We have a composter, so everything that can be composted, we do.”—TP “I take my reusable coffee cup and water bottle with me nearly everywhere I go; this simple switch from plastic and Styrofoam to eco-friendly plastic makes me feel a little more green every day!”—AW “I plant my own herbs, use a pellet stove, find ways to use pickled bologna juice (as meat marinade and a great base for Bloody Marys), and I also use solar lights on the driveway and a non-motorized lawn mower.”—KR

Sixth Annual Cheesecake and Wine for a Cure At Galen Glen
Submitted by KATHY MATSON On Saturday, April 18, Dr. Rosalee Rehrig and her Relay For Life team will join the staff at Galen Glen Winery for their sixth annual fundraiser for the American Cancer Society. From 12 to 4 p.m., the team will sell slices of homemade cheesecake. When asked about her team’s goals, Dr. Rehrig said, “This year we have set a goal of $10,000. We raise funds for the American Cancer Society because they are dedicated to funding research and finding new treatments and a cure for cancer.” Winemaker Sarah Troxell added, “Cancer strikes across all races and creeds and everyone knows someone who has had cancer or has been impacted by it. Galen Glen is proud to partner with the American Cancer Society and support the scientists who search for a cure by donating $1 per bottle of wine sold during this event.” Dr. Rehrig also said, “As a doctor, I see patients with cancer every day. I’ve lost a good friend to cancer and I hope for a future where I never have to say, ‘you have cancer.’” When asked how the partnership between a physician and a winery began, Dr. Rehrig replied, “We were introduced through one of our relay members as a possible way to raise money for our cause. Galen Glen has gone above and beyond to help us make this a successful event.” She went on to say, “A piece of cheesecake and a glass of wine are the perfect way to enjoy a spring day.” The event is open to the public and no reservations are required. Galen Glen Winery is located in the beautiful rolling hills of Andreas, Pennsylvania. The vineyard is on the family’s double-century farm and is full of history. The tasting room’s knowledgeable and engaging staff always make your visit enjoyable. Currently, the tasting room is open Friday from noon to 5 p.m., Saturday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., and Sunday from noon to 5 p.m.

Joining Traditions will be the OGO Fraternity from Moravian College, who will be taking pictures and dancing with the residents. “This is just another way that we can bridge the generation gap by having the youth of today with our seniors all under one roof having a good time,” said Laurie Schwab, director of resident life. “It is very important to have our residents embrace life and we like to bring a variety of things to the forefront to keep them engaged and happy.” Traditions of Hanover has partnered with the OGO Fraternity for past events, including a bingo fundraiser, and the brothers have helped with Family Day and they volunteer in the community. The prom will include a DJ, playing current songs mixed with classics, and there will be a crowning of Prom King and Queen. “We hope our residents and guests from Moravian have a fun and festive evening, dancing the night away and enjoying each other’s company. It may light up their lives; each of them giving back to one another,” said Schwab. This event is not open to the public.

April Showers of Flowers– Catching Spring
The moment I saw this idea, I knew I had to make one (or two, or maybe I’ll even make a third if I can get my hands on another umbrella). We all have an umbrella with a slightly bent spoke, one that has been in the garage for a decade or more…unused. Let’s turn those umbrellas and silk spring flowers into a wonderful front door decoration!
www.townandcountrygazette.com | April 2, 2015
What you will need: Umbrella Flowers—silk or real Pastel spray paint (optional) Craft or white school glue Door hook Scissors Ribbon or colorful swatch of fabric EXTRA: To customize your umbrella for Easter, add clean eggshells and moss around the flowers.

Steps:
Step 1: If your umbrella has been living in the garage for a few years, it may need to be cleaned up a little before repurposing it as a decoration. You may also want to paint the umbrella if the colors or logos are not in your color scheme. A leftover can of spray paint will work just fine. Step 2: Arrange the flowers in the umbrella so the colors will work well when pressed flat against a wall or door. Step 3: Add moss, eggshells, and other decorations to the brim of the umbrella for added spring flair. Step 4: Add a small bit of glue to the ribbon and attach it to the umbrella. Lehigh/Carbon Counties Partner With LCCC For Veterans Symposium Submitted by DENISE REIFINGER Lehigh Carbon Community College (LCCC), along with Lehigh and Carbon Counties Offices of Veterans Affairs, will host a free Veterans and Families Symposium on Saturday, April 11 at the college’s Lisa Scheller-Wayne Woodman Community Services Center at the main campus located at 4525 Education Park Drive in Schnecksville. “We hope that all area veterans attend the symposium with their families to learn about services that will benefit them, including educational options,” said LCCC President, Dr. Ann D. Bieber. “The college’s Office of Veterans and Returning Adults is set up to help our veterans transition into college to earn a degree and to access all the services available to them.” The one-day event will offer veteran-focused sessions such as understanding how to navigate benefits, educational opportunities, and healthcare as well as additional breakout sessions. The symposium will close with an afternoon panel discussion. Participating sponsors will have resource tables and will include companies seeking veteran employees. Registration and a free continental breakfast will begin at 8 a.m. A formal opening ceremony will be held at 9 a.m. as U.S. Army veteran and CEO of First Generation

William E. Carmody will offer opening remarks as the keynote speaker. Lunch will be provided free of charge to attendees. The day will end with a roundtable discussion and question and answer session from 2 to 3 p.m. with various participants from the earlier breakout sessions. “This Veterans and Families Symposium is what is needed by our veterans and their families. Veterans and families often do not know where to go for help, what is available to them, and may not even know that they even need help. This symposium will provide our veterans and families with help restarting their education, dealing with the VA Health Care System, mental health, PTSD, VA benefits, and employment to name a few. I hope that our veterans and families attend this session and if you know a veteran, I would ask that you encourage them to attend this very informative symposium,” added Wayne E. Nothstein, Carbon County Commissioner. Pre-registration is encouraged by calling the Lehigh County Office of Veterans Affairs at 610-782-3295, or by visiting www.lccc.edu/ vetevent2015 and registering online. A map of the LCCC campus, where free parking is available, can be found at www.lccc.edu/directions. Visit LANTA’s website for bus transportation options.

the famous Sermon in a revealing new setting: As told by the apostle Matthew to the church in Antioch, shortly after the Roman army has burned Jerusalem to the ground. In this dramatic setting, suddenly the lines heard so often have a powerful, new meaning. Those present have the sense that this sermon is about them. In “Hollywood vs. Faith,” Runyeon addresses the struggle to live as a Christian in an age where the media is teaching us different values. He speaks from experience in a language that captures the attention of youth and adults, sheds new light, and ignites laughter. It may just change the way families relate to the media. All are invited to experience this event. There
