I hope you guys are all enjoying the increasingly nice weather. My allergies are in full swing, but I am looking forward to sitting out on my deck and reading in the coming weeks, catching movies at Becky’s Drive-In under the stars, and maybe even getting out fishing once in a while. I also want to wish my lovely wife Jessica a very happy birthday. As always, I hope you all enjoy this edition of the Gazette.

Meet The Staff

What is your favorite herb/fruit/vegetable/plant to either grow yourself or find fresh at a farmers market or produce stand and why? Joe Korba, Associate Publisher I have the antithesis of a green thumb, but cherry tomatoes are one of the few plants that I don’t immediately kill. They are delicious with some sea salt.

Catherine Stroh, Publishing Assistant I am not a gardener, however last year my parents had a garden and my favorite items to pick were zucchini and mint. They also grew watermelon and cantaloupe and I loved checking their progress everyday to see how much they grew. The watermelons Danielle Tepper, Editor were mini, but were by far the best I’ve ever I love the smell of fresh basil and even had. It’s an awesome feeling going out to though I’m not really a tomato person, you the garden to pick your food as opposed can’t beat a summer caprese salad with to getting in the car and driving to the balsamic glaze. My parents have tomatoes grocery store. in the backyard almost every year, so they become a common snack—for us and our dog, as he almost always tries to steal a Tony Pisco, Art Director few. My favorite vegetable to find at a farmers market is carrots. At a grocery store they seem very standard, but at a market all Christine Stroh, Account Executive sorts of shapes and colors can be found. Nothing beats picking my own strawberries! Except maybe picking my own peaches. Or perhaps making them into a pie or jam? Donna Bachman, Accounting Manager Nope, definitely picking the fruit then Watermelon is my favorite fruit purchased making homemade ice cream with it the at produce stands near Bethany Beach, same day. Delaware. Blueberries are a close second— especially in pancakes!

Farm Fest 3

Submitted by JASON OSMUN Farm Fest III will be Saturday, April 30 at Ontelaunee Park from 11 a.m. until 6 p.m. This is our annual event to help our community by sharing information about farming, farmer’s stands, sustainable food, antique tractors, pioneer days and antique engine displays. This year we added inflatables for children, two bounce houses, one giant slide, and an obstacle course. There will also be lots of vendors and various craftsman throughout the park. With music artists in all styles, there will surely be something there for everyone's taste. The petting zoo returns along with hayrides, horse drawn carriage rides, and even a setup for kids games. The goal this year is to share with two recipients. The first is Mark Fidler, a Marine veteran who lost both legs in Afghanistan at 20 years old. His family is doing things at home to make it more comfortable for him. The second beneficiary is our annual music scholarship, which will go to one lucky artist in the Lehigh Valley. There are surprises coming at Farm Fest. Lastly, New Life’s own BandBand is opening the event.

2016 Bike For The Bridge To Support Jim Thorpe Pedestrian Bridge

Submitted by TERRI MONSERRAT The Delaware & Lehigh National Heritage Corridor (D&L) is hosting Bike for the Bridge on Sunday, May 1. Participants and their bikes will be shuttled from downtown Jim Thorpe to their starting destination by Pocono Biking. Participating cyclists will have the option to ride from the D&L’s Black Diamond Trailhead to Jim Thorpe (36 miles) or from the Rockport Trailhead in the Lehigh Gorge to Jim Thorpe (15 miles). The price is $39 per person or $49 with a bike rental until April 24. The price increases to $44 per person or $54 with a bike rental on April 25. Price includes shuttle ride, T-shirt, and post-ride taco party at Pocono Biking. To register for this event, call Pocono Biking at 1-800-944-8392.

Lehigh Valley Spinal Care Center

townandcountrygazette.com | April 21, 2016

The bridge is a ‘golden spike’ connection that will link all five counties of the D&L Trail. Groundbreaking is slated for summer 2016. When complete, the bridge will create 130 miles of continuous trail. All proceeds of Bike for the Bridge will benefit the completion of the D&L Trail and the pedestrian bridge in downtown Jim Thorpe. In 2014, Carbon County was awarded $2.1 million to install a prefabricated pedestrian bridge across the Lehigh River at Jim Thorpe. This will connect the D&L Trail from the Lehigh Gorge and downtown Jim Thorpe to Weissport and the Lehigh Valley beyond. While this is a huge step forward, this project requires complex engineering and will cost more than $3.1 million to complete. The span will also help reduce traffic congestion around Jim Thorpe and create a commuting alternative across the Lehigh River. Its installation will help keep pedestrians on public property and safely away from trains and traffic. Pedestrians and cyclists will be able to further explore the D&L Trail and surrounding towns. The Delaware & Lehigh National Heritage Corridor is a 501(c)3 non-profit organization that preserves historic pathway that carried coal and iron from WilkesBarre to Philadelphia. Today, the D&L Trail connects people to nature, culture, communities, recreation and our industrial heritage.

Modern Romance: An Investigation by Aziz Ansari

A ziz

Read On

Ansari’s debut novel Modern Romance: An Investigation is a humorous and informative fresh take on love, dating, marriage and everything in between in today’s technological world. With the help of By Cat Stroh co-author and sociologist Eric Klinenberg, a professor at New York University, extensive research and interviews were done involving hundreds of people in various cities around the world, like New York City, Wichita, Tokyo, for a “comprehensive, in-depth sociological France and Buenos Aires. The results were, investigation.” That book simply did not exist as expected, all very different and extremely yet, so he decided to change that and wrote one himself. It is a nice change from the usual selfinteresting. What’s so refreshing about Modern Romance indulgent celebrity memoir (I’ll admit I am guilty of is that there aren’t really any other books out enjoying those); this was much more academic. there like it. Ansari’s inspiration came from his (Quick side note: You do not need to like Aziz as fascination of the challenges we face today that an actor or comedian to get something out of simply didn’t exist 30 or so years ago in finding Modern Romance as it’s not really about him.) romance. He couldn’t find much in his exploration Continued on Page 21

An array of relevant topics were researched, such as: finding romance today vs. in the past, the whole “soul mate” notion and how having the world at our fingertips through online dating sites and apps is making it harder than ever to find said “soul mates,” how texting is both helping and hindering us, cheating, marriage, divorce, and what was particularly interesting, how different the romance scenes are in Tokyo, France, and Buenos Aires. For instance, in Tokyo, a sort of epidemic is spreading where men are simply not interested in dating and sex, so much so that the government is intervening by paying for and orchestrating dating events! France, somehow unsurprisingly, is much more loose, open, and nonjudgmental about romance and sex compared to the U.S. Buenos Aires, quite the opposite of Tokyo, has their own problem—the men are overly sexually aggressive. Any generation should be able to connect to Modern Romance, whether you’re older,

Page 21

struggling with today’s technology and yearning for a simpler time, or you’re younger and know nothing but the electronic world we live in right now and learning about how and why people met 50 years ago will fascinate you. With all of Ansari’s subject matter discussed and all of his results summarized, he hits the nail on the head, providing a really important connection between book, author and reader, and hopefully between all fellow readers: “We each sit alone, staring at this black screen with a whole range of emotions. But in a strange way, we are all doing it together, and we should take solace in the fact that no one has a clue what’s going on.” We’re all in the same boat; we’re all enduring this struggle, how about we endure together? Another valuable takeaway from Ansari is to not lose oneself in electronic technology: “…no matter how many options we seem to have on our screens, we should be careful not to lose track of the human beings behind them. We’re better off spending quality time getting to know actual people than spending hours with our devices, seeing who else is out there.” Well said Aziz!

When Jacob Met Rey

There’s one little star who spent an awful lot of time in the Hollywood spotlight this past award season: Jacob Tremblay, the 9-yearold who stole (and broke) hearts opposite Oscar winner Brie Larson in “Room.” Well, all his hard work has paid off and he’s been rewarded with the most adorable gift in the form of a tiny toy poodle. He asked his fans to help name her and it’s no surprise that he finally landed on Rey. Tremblay is a huge Star Wars fan and even considered the name Daisy, he told People. (Daisy Ridley plays Rey in the recently re-awakened Star Wars franchise.) Her debut photo has received over 45,000 likes on Instagram. Follow these cuties @jacobtremblay.

Rescue Pet: Meet Jim (and Rosie, Kelly, Jeff, Dan, Buck, and Al) Jim and his brothers and sisters are all available for adoption at Furry Feet Rescue, as is their mother, Shakira. They are Rottweiler/Shepherd mixes and they need loving families willing to train them and be patient with them as they learn how to become your new best friend. There is a 90-minute drive limit on puppies. Their adoption fee is $250 plus a $100 deposit which is returned after they’ve been spayed/neutered. Apply at www.furryfeetrescue.com.

There you will find friendly and well-educated staff that will gladly assist any needs you may have and are minutes from anywhere in Carbon, Schuylkill, Lehigh, and Northampton Counties. Blue Mountain Farm Market Opening In Slatington

Submitted by ALICE WANAMAKER The residents of Slatington will have a new sight as they reach the Delaware and Lehigh Trailhead on Main Street this summer – The Blue Mountain Farm Market. The market, which kicks off Memorial Day weekend, will be open on Fridays from 12:00 p.m.-6:00 p.m. and Saturdays from 8:00 a.m.2:00 p.m. through October. Local produce and farm products such as vegetables, fruit, honey, eggs, brick oven bread and baked goods from nearby growers will be just some of what is available throughout the season. Many of these products are grown on farms that only use organic methods, meaning that they are grown without synthetic fertilizers or chemical sprays. These products will be marked accordingly at the stand. The local Venture Group offered space under their new pavilion at the Asher F. Boyer Trail section of the D&L National Heritage Corridor for the market. With ample parking, weekend traffic for trail use, and an excited community, the market hopes to be a vital resource for area residents who have been without a local grocery

said Wagner, who graduated from Northern Lehigh High School in 2007. “The Trailhead is a beautiful space for folks to come and enjoy some time on a Friday and Saturday, and the market aims to be a wonderful opportunity for great food and conversations about food with the whole community.” The farmers hope to offer a venue for educational presentations, such as sponsored cooking demos, as the market gains traction. They are currently seeking sponsors to help advertise and promote the market as Opening Day approaches. “Both the Greater Northern Lehigh Chamber and the local Venture Group are very pleased to say ‘Welcome!’ to our newest residences of The Trailhead in Slatington,” said Chamber President Nancy Treskot. How many of you know what a feather quill [pop-gun] is? Have you made such a thing to play with when you were young? This is how to make a feather quill [pop-gun]: Cut a goose feather off at the thick (base) end and also at the other end so that the feather is about four inches long. Make a piece of wood that can be pushed in the feather quill (which is the hard, hollow, basal part of a feather.) The wood piece should be about as long as the piece of feather (four inches) but one must scrape or whittle it thin so he can shove it in the quill. Cut a slice or disk from a raw potato. Push the feather quill through the potato slice. That will create a stopper in the quill. Push that potato stopper about half way into the quill with that piece of wood [that you whittled down]. Create another such potato stopper at the end. Now with one stopper about half way in the quill and another at the end, shove the end one into the quill with that piece of wood. air between the two stoppers will drive the middle stopper out the other end [with such force] that it will crack. This works just like a pop-gun made from elderberry bush stems. The children called what they created a feather quill [pop-gun]. I think the children liked this pop-gun demonstration years back just as well as they do now a days but they did not have those bought guns hanging on themselves like the young ones do today. They needed to make their toys themselves and they needed to use their heads to do so. They did not have that much money to buy everything and that was also good. Willliam Kistler from New Tripoli told us his Grammy taught him how to make this popgun (Apparently her source of information here.). [Florence’s instructions appeared to be a little ambiguous so I added some detail to the translation which hopefully will provide more clarity to the process of making these quill popguns. The word, Fedder-keidel, refers to the quill itself; apparently over time it was used also for the pop-gun created from it as well. The word, Blatt, normally means leaf, page, or blade (of grass), but when cutting raw potatoes, blettlich schneide, means, to be cut into disks or slices as when making home fries. The process of making these quill pop-guns was not limited to the PA Dutch or even to just children in our country. From an old Mother Goose Rhyme published in a book in England in 1924 we have the following: Cackle, cackle, Mother Goose, Have you any feathers loose? Truly have I, pretty fellow, Half enough to fill a pillow. And here are quills, take one or ten,

And make from each, pop-gun or pen. In addition to using goose quills to make pop-guns, Florence mentions the Holler-flint. They were pop-guns made from stems of elder bushes, from which we also get elderberries. The center of the stems was a soft material or pith which could be forced out with a hard wood ramrod to create a tube. Boys would then use them to launch small darts or spit balls. With a little time and ingenuity, children always found ways to entertain themselves and also possibly to create a little mischief.]

Winter-Spring 2016 Mini Movie Reviews SPOTLIGHT | 11/25/15

their sense of duty to discover the truth and unveil it to the world. As a former Catholic school kid, the statistics were staggering. Based on true facts, Spotlight tells the story of how The Boston Globe exposed the widespread scandal of pedophilic priests and the massive cover-up within the Catholic Church. It hit the front page of the Sunday paper in early 2002 and sent shockwaves around the country—and, as the end credits show, the world.

Should you see it?

If you enjoy journalism movies or are interested in the subject matter. I highly recommend it.

THE REVENANT | 1/8/16

Key Players: Michael Keaton, Rachel McAdams, Mark Ruffalo

Even though I’ve barely spent any time in a real hustle-and-bustle newsroom and never at a major paper, I still get really amped when I watch movies about that kind of setting. It takes me back to when I worked for my college paper—the Spotlight team’s tiny room sectioned off from the rest of the staff made me nostalgic for our tiny computer lab in the basement of the student union, heavy with the scent of newsprint and stale coffee. Spotlight truly deserved its Best Picture win—what a powerful film. As a journalist, I easily related to their passion for the story,

Key Players: Leonardo DiCaprio and Tom Hardy

I really only saw this because I try to see all Best Picture nominees before the awards, plus everyone was saying it might finally win Leo an Oscar (it did). True story aside, it just didn’t look very interesting and my opinion didn’t change much after I left the theater. The cinematography was truly impressive though—all the buzz about only being shot in natural light was justified. The film was indeed beautiful. But I couldn’t stomach the bear attack and there were some fairly graphic scenes that were rather hard to watch. Hugh

Glass overcame overwhelming odds to exact his revenge on those who left him for dead and I suppose that makes his story worth telling. However, the movie really dragged for me, bogged down with hallucinations of his (fictional, film-only) Pawnee wife, an increasingly exhausting fixation on sky shots, and so. Much. Grunting.

Should you see it?

If only to watch the performance that finally allows us to introduce “Academy Award Winner Leonardo DiCaprio.”

DEADPOOL | 2/12/16

Key Players: Ryan Reynolds

I understand this comic adaptation was a big deal to a lot of people. The friend I went with had already seen it twice when she went with me and she couldn’t stop talking about how amazing it was. So I think I was just missing what appealed to its crazed fans. I haven’t seen X-Men nor do I know much about them, is that it? If you already follow one megasuperhero clique (in my case, I guess that would be the Avengers), do you just become indifferent to the rest? Because there really are so many. Whatever the case may be, I wasn’t really into it. It surprised me a bit, because I’m quite fond of Ryan Reynolds. And while I did enjoy his meta snark and there were some moments that made me laugh,

Page 41

ultimately I just really didn’t care about the (heavily choreographed) climax of the film, which to me made viewing feel pretty pointless. There’s already a sequel in the works though, so I’m clearly in the minority of most audiences.

Should you see it?

If you’re obsessed with Deadpool, any comic movie whatsoever, or you want to know what Ryan Reynolds looks like after his face starts to resemble “a testicle with teeth.”

ZOOTOPIA | 3/4/16

Key Players: Jason Bateman and Ginnifer Goodwin

Disney does such impressive work with animation, making animals not made of much more than pixels and color just impossibly adorable. The trailer for this flick made the plot seem a little thin, but that was to be expected for a kids movie. However, for those who still decided to go, they were pleasantly surprised with hilarious and brilliant references to everything from “The Godfather” to “Breaking Bad” with a rather dark metaphorical plot twist. I laughed so hard at one particular scene (Little Rodentia) that my sides hurt. Continued on Page 42

If you have kids or you’re just an eternal kid at heart, you’ll love it. Bottom line, never doubt Disney. They know what they’re doing.

The Divergent Series: ALLEGIANT | 3/18/16

for a return to normalcy. It’s possible I need a refresher on the series—I haven’t read the books since I plowed through all three before the release of the first movie—but the plot seemed incredibly aimless and fluffy, which often happens to the intro segment of a film conclusion that gets needlessly split to make more money at the box office. What was intended to be some big reveals fell flat and it’s hard to see where the film will land when it finally comes to an end. I’m most interested to see if they’ll keep the controversial twist (major character death) or pull a 180 on us all.

Should you see it?

If you’re following the saga or curious to see how the film differs from the book.

HELLO, MY NAME IS DORIS 4/1/16

Key Players: Shailene Woodley and Theo James

As yet another futuristic YA dystopia draws to a close, I’ve been waiting to see how the movies would continue to improve upon the books’ inconsistencies. I really loved the first book and I thought the first film brought it to life beautifully. It was an easy feat though, seeing as how the first chapter of the story was the simplest one to tell. I grew increasingly frustrated with the Divergent trilogy as it progressed, never quite knowing what was going on in Insurgent and absolutely appalled at the convoluted mess that Allegiant was. Of course, the final book was split into two parts for their film adaptations, giving the conclusion a completely new name (Ascendant). When I went to see part 1, I wasn’t sure what to expect. Overall, I left feeling ready

Key Players: Sally Field and Max Greenfield

Well, Sally Field can do no wrong. I think we can all agree on that. I’ve always been a fan of hers—how can you not be?—and her appearance on Ellen with her co-star prompted me to read up on this film. The trailer looked Continued on Page 45

really cute, so I went with my mom. (We both watch “New Girl,” so we were also there to see Max Greenfield play someone other than overenunciating goofball Schmidt.) The film was perfectly charming, albeit a little bittersweet. Doris has endured a rather demure existence caring for her hoarder mother, but when she’s suddenly allowed to live her own life, she has to reevaluate what that could mean. Helped along by her imaginative fantasies which now include her much younger colleague, she starts behaving like a desperate teenager, the kind that thinks the slightest glance means so much more, over-thinking (over-hoping, really) that something is about to come from nothing. The predictable outcome is a very sad reminder that you shouldn’t wait to take chances.

Should you see it?
