From the Editor’s Desk

Joe Korba

Welcome to our 4th Annual Blue Mountain Dining edition! This is always one of my personal favorite issues of the year, and I hope you all enjoy it. There was some fierce competition in our Best Restaurant Readers Poll – up until the very end it looked like A Ca Mia in Walnutport was going to take the win, but newcomer Fire Stone Pizza and Grill pulled ahead and won “Best Restaurant” 2014. Country View Diner and West End Saloon also had strong support from their customers. Make sure to check out the Q & A with Brad Eckhart, the owner and cook over at Fire Stone, on page 14, along with our ongoing Blue Mountain’s Best feature on page 8. Remember, if you would like to nominate one of your noteworthy neighbors, friends or family members to be featured in the Gazette, please e-mail Danielle at dtepper@ townandcountrygazette.com or give us a call. Stay tuned for our spring edition and “Green” issue coming out on April 17. As always, thanks for reading and a big shout out to everyone who participated in the restaurant poll. It’s great to have such an active and engaged readership, and believe me; we don’t take it for granted.

Meet the Staff It’s our annual restaurant issue! What are your favorite places to eat in the Valley? Joe Korba, Associate Publisher: My favorite restaurant in the Lehigh Valley is Sette Luna in Easton. They have amazing Italian food—the bolognese is incredible—and one of the best wine lists in the area. The owners just opened a French bistro (also in Easton), Maxim’s 22, which I’ve been meaning to check out. Danielle Tepper, Publishing Assistant: I admittedly mostly eat at chains, but Billy’s Downtown Diner in Bethlehem serves the most outrageously delicious concoctions—anyone who wraps a chocolate chip pancake around a peanut butter-covered banana and dubs it ‘breakfast’ is OK in my book. Donna Bachman, Accounting Manager: Point Phillips Hotel and any Italian restaurant in the area. Alice Wanamaker, Publishing Assistant: You can’t beat the gravy fries at Bowmanstown Dinner.

Excavating & Paving SPEciaLiStS

Tony Pisco, Art Director: One of my favorite places to eat is Hong Kong No.1 in Northampton. The Chinese food there is terrific. I think my mom pretends to visit me just so she can stop and get something to eat there. If I had to pick a sit down restaurant, I would say Pistachio’s in Allentown. Every time we’ve been there, we’ve really enjoyed the great Mediterranean food they serve. Tyler Trumbauer, Staff Writer: I often frequent the larger chain restaurants around the Valley, but occasionally I consume the pure local cuisine. Up in Lehighton, P.J. Whelians at Platz’s is a great spot. Slatington boasts quality pizzerias in Mama’s Pizza and Sal’s Pizza, especially if you are in the mood for pierogies. Palmerton Hotel is also a solid choice for “bar” food. Many people I know use it as their “go-to” spot for wings. Applebee’s may entice me with their half-priced appetizers and Olive Garden with their unlimited soup and salad, but the local spots certainly do not take a back seat to the “big boys.”

Meet Roger “Corky” Sell Nominated by Gene Salvatore, President of EAA 85 By Danielle S. Tepper

M

o s t teenage boys are eager to drive their first car when they hit 16; not Roger “Corky” Sell. Instead, he had his mother drive him to the Slatington Airport so he could take his first solo flight. Why bother with Driver’s Ed when you can fly a plane instead? The current owner and operator of Slatington Airport grew up with flying in his blood. “My father had an airplane my whole life,” said Sell. “If I had a tractor toy or something as a kid, I wouldn’t be driving it along the ground, I would fly it.”

Sell as a teen with his father’s plane.

Sell was born in Okla. in 1942. The nickname was given to him at a very young age. “Well, my father is also Roger, but I’m not a Jr.,” he explained. “When my dad was in the Navy back in the ‘40s and I was just a little squirt running around, they’d say, ‘what a little corker.’ So they started calling me Corky—or at least that’s what they told me,” he laughed. His parents were locals and

they soon returned to Pa. where Sell graduated from Slatington High School in 1960. He spent his youth learning about aviation from his father, which he says was the start of his passion. His father was an aircraft mechanic who eventually wound up working for major airlines and retired as a captain from Eastern Airlines with over 20,000 flying hours under his belt in 1976. In the mid-‘50s, Sell Sr. and two other gentlemen co-founded the Slatington Airport. One owned the land, one had the bulldozer, and Sell said his father had the knowledge. What had previously been farmland became a small operation with three bays, one for each of them. “And it evolved into what you see today,” said Sell. In the early ‘60s, Sell Sr. bought the airport and made it his own. Sell’s interest was to follow in his father’s footsteps, but in the process of going to school to become an aircraft mechanic, he decided to continue his education instead of finding an airline job and eventually obtained a degree in air engineering from St. Louis University. It was an accelerated program; Sell graduated college at just 20 years old and got a job with the Air Force as a civilian aerospace engineer. The job took him to Long Island and Florida for short periods of time, before he decided to join the Navy, like his father had during WWII. “I became a Naval Flight Officer,” said Sell. “I flew an F4 Phantom for Fighter Squadron 11, the Red Rippers.” He was in the military for a total of four and a half years during the Vietnam War era. He was also on the USS Forrestal during the chainreaction explosions and fire of 1967.

Sell was a “Red Ripper” in the U.S. Navy

When he left the Navy, he completed his pilot certifications and became a flight instructor. “I was involved in trying to obtain a job as an airline pilot then,” Sell said. “But that time frame wasn’t conducive to low-experience people getting jobs—they were laying off people with experience at the time.” Instead, he moved to Calif. where he worked for Northrop Grumman as an aircraft accident investigator. He also spent time as the system safety engineer and was part of the design team for the

Sell, his father, and the family dog. By attaching skis to the aircraft, they were still able to take off in the snow.

B2 stealth bomber. “I guess you could say due to the peace dividend, with the Berlin Wall and the Soviet Union, the need for them [stealth bombers] was minimized,” said Sell. “They had more people than they needed, so I ended up with a chance for early retirement.” He moved back to Pa. to take over operation of his father’s airport. “As my father got older, he’d asked me if I wanted it,” he said. “I said sure.” Sell says the small operation makes a “good retirement job.” He’s there at least six days a week, mostly for maintenance purposes: snow plowing, cutting grass, etc. “I try to keep it in good condition,” he said. “I take pride in people saying, ‘what a nice place you have.’ I wish it got used more.”

“You have a sense of accomplishment when you learn how to fly.” He has two major tenants; a flight school and a maintenance shop. When the Kutztown Airport closed and they no longer had a home, he also generously welcomed the Experimental Aircraft Association (EAA) chapter 855. “They provide nice services,” said Sell. “They built the bicycle shed so that anyone who flies in can borrow a bike and do the Rails to Trails. And now there’s a little campground in the woods too.” Slatington Airport is a “privately owned airport for public use.” Sell explained, “Anyone can fly in, I don’t charge them. Theoretically, I guess I could, but I don’t see any reason for it.” He also rents hangars and tie-down spaces. He and his wife Linda had two sons, who, although they grew up around aviation just as he did, didn’t show an interest to quite the same extent. Although, he says, his grandkids do get a kick out of when he flies over their house. What’s to blame for the lack of

Page 9

aviation interest in today’s young people? Lack of exposure, Sell thinks. “WWII folks were exposed to it; when they came out of the service, they wanted to fly like crazy,” he said. “Next generation, some of that spilled over, and so on. It was a gradual thing, but it’s probably close to flattening out now.” Sell also blames technology and the economy. “It’s more expensive to fly these days,” he explained. “That slowed it down some. And the demographic of the pilots has changed. Young folks now can ‘fly’ on a computer. We might not get pilots anymore, just a bunch of computer geeks.” He believes exposure is the key to appreciation, something the EAA is trying to help with. “This has its rewards,” he said. “You have a sense of accomplishment when you learn how to fly.” Sell owns two planes, but he doesn’t fly as often as he’d like anymore. He aims for once a week. “I can fly whenever I want, that’s what’s nice about it,” he said. “I’ll take a plane out and fly around for 20-30 minutes over the Poconos. I call them mental health flights, because you come back and life’s great.” For more information on the Slatington Airport and EAA 85, visit www.855.eaachapter.org.

Newcomer Wins Favorite Restaurant Award

Country Gazette Town & Favorite Restaurant 2014

F

or our fourth annual restaurant issue, we once again polled our loyal readers (and eaters) to discover the Best Restaurant in the area. The winner is newcomer Fire Stone Pizza & Grill in Walnutport. I sat down with owner Brad Eckhart to get an inside look at his personal foodie history, what makes Fire Stone more than “just another pizza shop,” and what item you simply can’t miss on the menu. —Danielle Tepper Town & Country Gazette: Did you grow up in the food biz? What made you decide to open a restaurant? Eckhart: I did somewhat grow up in the business. My mother worked for an Italian restaurant for years and at 14, I would wash dishes on Friday nights. While I was doing that, I would watch what was going on and I just became fascinated with the industry itself. A little bit later, I thought it might be something I would do in the future, but my career went a different direction. I went into financial planning and investments and things like that. I had my own practice for 15 years. It wasn't until years later that an opportunity came along to purchase an existing restaurant. TCG: Where were you and what were you doing before opening Fire Stone?

E: I owned Valleri’s Restaurant & Pizzaria in Bath for 14 years. We sold it in December of 2012 and opened Fire Stone November of 2013. We’ve also run a catering business, Catering Solutions by Brad, for the past nine years. This location was a sandwich shop before us, which I think was open a little over a year. I was doing some catering up the road and drove by and saw the sign, so I stopped and peeked in. And here we are. TCG: You were confident enough in your product to move into an area full of pizza places— right across the street from one, in fact. What is it about Fire Stone that you think sets you apart from "the competition?" E: When we decided on our current location, I took into consideration all the restaurants that were in the area, not just the pizza shops. It took two years to put this menu together, because I wanted to put together a variety of items while keeping an emphasis on fresh local products. We’re not doing a very big dinner scene, so I’m hoping to create a twist on Italian comfort food; it’s comfort food across the board. You’re not going to please everybody, but hopefully enough people will come in to give it a try. TCG: What is your favorite food to cook? Favorite to eat? E: I never proclaimed to be a chef. I’m self-taught. My mother

was a fantastic cook, so I watched and cooked alongside her for years. You learn as you go. My favorite to cook has always been Italian; I love the fresh herbs and spices that go into it. And to eat, it has to be pizza. It never gets old. TCG: What item on your menu would you recommend to a first time visitor? E: Besides the pizza or a stromboli, which are our best sellers, I would recommend one of our stuffed burgers with the garlic parm fries or a flatbread sandwich with our homemade potato chips.

Walnut St. Harhart said that during the special hours, a veterans outreach specialist from the American Legion in Wilkes-Barre will be available to meet with local veterans and assist them with issues they may be having accessing benefits and services from the U.S. Veterans Administration. “We have had such a positive response to this outreach service,” said Harhart. “I know many veterans get frustrated trying to understand components of their benefits or trying to get access to services they are entitled to, and this specialist will answer their questions and help resolve any issues a veteran is encountering in a face-to-face, confidential meeting.” The veterans outreach specialist is available the first Thursday of each month on alternating months at Harhart’s Northampton or Slatington district offices. April’s visit is being held in Slatington and May’s visit will be held in Northampton on May 1. Appointments are necessary. Please contact the Slatington district office at 610-760-9805 for schedule availability in April.

A Moment in Time Submitted by DAVID D. ALTRICHTER Recently my sister Alice Harper loaned our mother’s 1927 family photo album to me to reproduce some pictures. My mother, Arlene, grew up in Berlinsville and the Mummey and Beck families were close friends. Her father, Oliver, and his brother, James, were managers of Granville Hahn’s Slate Works in Walnutport. My mother captured this priceless photo of Billy Beck making roofing slate. My uncle, Oliver Mummey, and Billy Beck were lifelong friends. Before WWII, the slate industry was the major employer in the area.

Let The Remodel Begin

Submitted by MELISSA E. HAWK It is almost time; we are remodeling. The Northampton Area Public Library will close Thursday, April 17 at 5 p.m. and reopen Monday, May 12 at 9 a.m. The Children’s Room will close on Tuesday, April 15 at 8 p.m. Nothing is due while we are closed. Come in and stock up on books, DVDs, magazines, CDs, and audiobooks. Loan periods will automatically be extended and no fines will be charged during this time. We will not be able to check in items while we are closed, so please do not use the book drop or media drop until we reopen. Thank you for your patience and cooperation. Extra Point by Tyler Trumbauer

‘Superconference’ Specifics

The merger of the Lehigh Valley Conference and the MVC has been rumored for quite some time and it finally was agreed upon last year. Since then, very little has emerged from the situation, which has left much uncertainty. Last week, a report surfaced that the new league would be called the EPIC 18, with EPIC standing for Eastern Pennsylvania Interscholastic Conference. Parkland Athletic Director, Jeff Geisel, denies that report: “I can’t tell you what the conference name is, because it hasn’t been approved yet, but it is definitely not the EPIC 18. I don’t know where that came from, but that is not correct.” Geisel did not confirm nor deny that the name EPIC 18 was discussed, however. Although this is a lot of change coming for the Lehigh Valley athletic scene, Geisel feels it won’t make much of a difference to Parkland. “As one of the largest enrollments in the new league, it won’t affect us much,” said Geisel.“We play the closer, bigger schools such as Pleasant Valley and the Pocono Mountain schools as a non-league game in many sports. Now they will just be league games.” Geisel did note that the “mountain” schools and the “Lehigh Valley” schools will still be separated, as the league wants them to be split the best way geographically for divisions. It has been rumored that, in football, the former MVC schools will be in a nine-team division along with Allen, Dieruff and Bethlehem Catholic. On the hardwood, there will be three six-team divisions with one including all six former MVC schools. A school would play 16 league games in a given season, 10 of those contests would be divisional and then six games with teams from the other divisions. One major change would affect the district playoffs as the MVC league champion used to receive one of the top seeds for being a league winner. They will lose that now as they are all in one league. As Geisel pointed out,

BOROUGH MANAGER

The borough of Slatington in northern Lehigh County, with a population of 4200 and a budget of $4.2 million, is seeking candidates for the position of Borough Manager. Slatington is situated along the Lehigh River about 15 miles north of Allentown, PA. The position entails supervising borough employees (12-15), planning and supervising borough projects, searching and applying for grants, preparing an annual budget, and will be principally responsible for all non-legislative and non-judicial powers and duties of the Borough Council. The ideal candidate will have a college degree in public/business administration or civil engineering and municipal management or the equivalent experience; municipal experience a plus. Candidate should have strong supervisory and planning skills and be familiar with currently supported versions of Windows and Microsoft Office software products. Submit you resume with cover letter to Slatington Borough, 125 S Walnut St, Slatington, PA 18080 or email to slatebor@ptd.net no later than April 30th.

“It will allow for truly the best teams to be involved in the postseason.” Skeptics worry that the different atmospheres and attitudes of the LVC and MVC will clash and lead to the league’s demise. There will be a lot of meetings and a lot of decisions to be made before it is officially rolled out in June, but hopefully the decision makers don’t forget one thing through it all. All of this is supposed to be about the student athletes.

Indians To Settle In Schuylkill League

As 18 different schools will be settling into a new league this fall, Lehighton will be cozying into their new digs as a member of the Schuylkill League. The Indians will be competing in the closely-knit league as they are departing the soon-to-be defunct Mountain Valley Conference, however, their decision to leave was made before the formation of the ‘superconference.’ “The school district, coaches, and athletes are excited to join the Schuylkill League,” said Lehighton Athletic Director, Kyle Spotts. The 22-league team will allow the Indians to face their geographic neighbors. “It will present the district with a tremendous opportunity to renew local rivalries in games with Jim Thorpe, Panther Valley, and Tamaqua in all sports and also allow us to play programs in league play that we will see come district playoffs,” Spotts said. Most Schuylkill League football teams compete in the Anthracite League, which is known for its hardnosed pigskin games. Competing in that style of play will suit the Indians well. Spotts commented on the additional benefits of being a member of the Schuylkill League: “Both leagues [Schuylkill and Anthracite] present school districts with passionate fan bases that travel to their events,” he said. “This will help in the ticket revenue as well. The league presented the district with an opportunity to play in an extremely competitive league with local schools that are similar to our district.” Spotts did admit that a downfall to joining the Schuylkill League is having to play an independent schedule for field hockey and boys’ tennis, as they are not official league sports recognized by the Schuylkill League. The Indians will join the “large school” division in the Schuylkill League.

Rescue Pet Meet Cody

From Bucks County SPCA (www.bcspca.org): “Cody is a 7-monthold American Eskimo/Husky mix. He is a highly active and busy dog who still is adjusting to being in the shelter. He still needs some warm-up time, but is a friendly and outgoing guy once he gets to know you. Once he’s comfortable, Cody will jump into your lap and lean in for petting. He is an excellent listener and has excellent leash manners. He would make a great walking partner. Cody is not very interested in toys, but retrieved a tennis ball a few times before losing interest. Cody already knows how to sit and will work for canned food. He is just learning how to lie down. He would be best suited in a home with children around 10-12 years or older. He can be a bit pushy with other dogs, so he would need to meet them before going home. He was respectful of cats when meeting them, but use supervision and training.” If you are interested in Cody, please contact the Upper Bucks shelter in Quakertown at 267-347-4674.

Magic For Dogs

Do you remember the first time you ever saw a magic trick? It might’ve been at a classmate’s birthday party or while walking past a city street performance. Either way, you were probably young enough to be blown away by it, unable to wrap your innocent and as-yet-unjaded mind around it. Same goes for dogs.

Finnish magician and mentalist Jose Ahonen decided to experiment with a few willing subjects using a simple disappearing treat trick—the

Ahonen made it a point to note that the dogs did receive treats both before and after the trick. The clip was posted Friday, March 21 and was quickly picked up by outlets such as the Huffington Post, E! Online, and BuzzFeed. Ahonen also mentioned on YouTube that there is a “Part II coming soon.”

42 Northampton High School DECA Students Headed To Atlanta

Submitted by NICOLE PERSA DECA is one of the largest clubs in the high school and is an association of marketing students. From February 26 to 28, 2,000 students from across the state competed in Hershey in an effort to qualify for nationals. Out of those 2,000 students, 173 were from NHS (the most from any one school). Overall, 90 NHS students were honored on stage and 42 students from Northampton qualified to attend the International Career Development Conference in Atlanta. These students will continue to compete against other students from all over the world and represent Pennsylvania DECA. The DECA International Career Development Conference (ICDC) is the highlight of the DECA year. 16,000 high school students, advisors, business people, and alumni gather for several days of DECA excitement. The top competitors in each event are recognized for their outstanding achievements. The trip is May 2 through May 7. The festivities are at Georgia World Congress Center and the Georgia Dome in Atlanta. With success comes additional expense. The

“His Last Days” Scheduled For Final Reenactment

Submitted by THERESA SPEICHER St. Nicholas Catholic Church will host the final reenactment of “His Last Days,” the story of the passion, death, and resurrection of Jesus on April 14 (Monday of Holy Week) at 8 p.m. The play will be presented by the Herald Biblical Group and it will be their final performance. The group, an interdenominational cast of people of from all walks of life, will disband after Monday’s reenactment. For the past 30 years, they have used their talents to present the story of the last week of Jesus’ life and filled that reenactment with prayer through music, song and dance. Herald has offered their work with the hope and prayer that hearts will be touched with a deeper realization of God’s love. Many who have witnessed this reenactment have found it to be a moving experience that has helped them to more fully appreciate the events of Holy Week and Easter. There is no admission charge and all are welcome. St. Nicholas Church is located in Lehigh Township at 4412 Mountain View Dr. in Walnutport. For more information, call JoAnn Havrilko, Director of Herald Biblical Group, at 570-929-2984.

Ways You Can Help The American Cancer Society Submitted by SHARI NOCTOR Unfortunately, cancer has touched so many lives and today, most people know someone with cancer. Many of us are looking for ways to help those suffering. What can you do to be an important part of the American Cancer Society’s Relay for Life? A Relay for Life will be held at Whitehall High School’s football stadium beginning at noon Friday, June 20 through noon Saturday, June 21. This is a 24-hour event because cancer never sleeps and patients need to go through the darkness before they can see the light. The Relay is a family-friendly community event

and there is free admission to the event and all the activities. This is not a run, as people think. Here are some ways you can help: 1. Start a team for the Relay. Just three or more people can make a team. School teams, faith based organizations, businesses, families and friends are all encouraged. There is no age restriction but an adult must accompany a minor. 2. Join an existing team. 3. Register cancer survivors to attend the Relay and be part of the Survivor Celebration. 4. Purchase and decorate a luminaria bag in memory of someone who has lost the battle or in honor of a cancer survivor. These $10 bags are placed around the track and are illuminated after 9 p.m. on June 20. 5. Make a donation to sponsor a Relay team or a general donation to the Relay.

Fish Tale Photo Collage

This fun craft is a unique way to display your real life fish tale. The finished product makes a great addition to any mancave for your favorite fisherman. I’ve seen a few versions of this one on Pinterest as well as for sale in a larger craft store. The following version recycles items you already have on hand or can find cheaply at your local secondhand shop.

What you will need:

•Older-style fishing rod and flimsy pole and reel. If a newer type of pole is used, be sure the reel is capable of laying flat against wall. •3’ of twine or thick fishing line. •Five wooden picture frames (5x7 or 4x10) with photos of your favorite fishing trip memories. •Five small eyehooks. •Two quantity fishing bobbers. •Nails and hammer to attach pole to your mancave wall.

Steps

Step 1: After measuring space on your wall for your new décor, carefully thread the twine around the reel and through each loop on your pole, ending at the tip of pole. (Photo source: pinterest.com) Tie the ends so they are clean. Step 2: Attach varying sizes of twine to each loop on the fishing pole to hang your photos from, including two at the tip of the pole for your bobbers. Step 3: Carefully attach eyehooks to the edge that is the “top” of each wooden frame. Step 4: Tie twine to photo frame eyehooks and arrange placement of each photo. Telling a story in timeline style is nice, but not necessary. Step 5: Hang your new photo display as a center piece and enjoy the memories!

Do you have an item (or a collection of items) that you are looking to recycle? Send a picture of your products over and I just might use them in a future project! Pictures should be emailed to awanamaker@ townandcountrygazette.com. Please be sure to include your name and contact info.

Harhart Announces $190,000 In Funding For Northampton County

Submitted by TRICIA LEHMAN Rep. Julie Harhart (R-Lehigh/Northampton) today announced a total of $190,000 in state funding awarded to three communities in the 183rd Legislative District in Northampton County. “This grant funding will help some of our local municipalities move forward with projects aimed at improving their local communities,” said Harhart. “The funding is the result of casinos located throughout the Commonwealth that contribute money toward regional community improvements. I look forward to seeing these projects move forward.” The grants are as follows: Northampton Borough: $65,000 for the Uptown Business District Park to create an urban minipark to include a local fresh foods farmers’ market in the uptown business district where Kroope’s Clothing and General Store once stood. Lehigh Township: $100,000 for the Delps Park Development Project located in Lehigh and Moore townships with creating a fitness trail, jogging stations, a combination softball/soccer field and a parking lot.

Page 51

Allen Township: $25,000 for Allen Township Fire Company to replace fire protection equipment. The grants were secured through the Pennsylvania Race Horse Development and Gaming Act’s Local Share Account. The revenue is generated solely by the Mount Airy Casino in Mount Pocono, and may be distributed among the five counties adjacent to Monroe County, including Northampton County.

Book VS. Film: Divergent It’s official; I have been sucked into the world of Divergent. I always do this. I ignore something as the buzz builds and builds, and when it finally reaches a deafening roar, I break down. I did it with Harry Potter, believe it or not. When my mom first brought the Sorcerer’s Stone home for me, I thought it looked silly. Flash forward 14 years and I’m sitting in a movie theater sobbing my heart out as a gigantic chunk of my childhood finally comes to an end. The Hunger Games: Not quite as dramatic, but still the same result. I resisted until maybe a month or so before the movie, then finally read the book, nay, the entire trilogy, in one weekend. And now I love it. So when everyone started talking about Divergent, I knew I would eventually have to grab the book, since I’m the type of person who simply has to read the book before seeing the movie. I read it in 8 hours. I sat down the Saturday

evening of the film’s opening weekend (March 22) and didn’t move until 3 a.m. Sunday afternoon, I was sitting in the theater. I saw it again this past weekend and subsequently read the entire second book, Insurgent. My plans for this coming weekend? Allegiant. As someone who has always been a lover of books, I sometimes feel like a traitor when I like the film version better. But as an entertainment addict, there is no denying that I am nearly equally as addicted to movies. And so when a new screenplay comes along that’s based on yet another bestselling novel, I don’t groan along with the rest of the crowd or whine that Hollywood has no original ideas left. Instead, I smile to myself because it means I get to see yet another world that has so far only lived inside my own head come to life. More often than not, it’s worth it. Divergent was worth it. The book, published in 2011 by then-21-yearold author Veronica Roth, takes place in a dystopian Chicago where society has divided into five factions based on virtue in order to keep the peace: Amity the kind, Candor the honest, Erudite the intelligent, Dauntless the brave, and Abnegation the selfless, which is the faction our main character, Beatrice “Tris” Prior, belongs to. When a person reaches 16, they take a test to determine which faction they are truly apt to belong to and then take part in a choosing ceremony which allows them to either stay with the faction they were raised in or defect to a different one. Faction

VS.

before blood: Once you choose, there is no going back. Tris discovers that her test results were inconclusive; she shows traits for three different factions, not just one, a result that labels her “divergent.” Divergence is dangerous in the eyes of the society’s leaders, for reasons Tris does not yet understand. And this is just the beginning as she decides to take her identity into her own hands. The book was a thrill ride and it came alive in the performances from Shailene Woodley, Kate Winslet, Theo James, Miles Teller, Zoe Kravitz, and the rest of the talented cast. Director Neil Burger did an amazing job painting the picture

of a Chicago that has been torn apart by war and built back up to serve a new purpose. Which did I like better? Who cares? A story is a story and this is an excellent one. See it, read it, and decide for yourself. Fully Insured Quality Work at Reasonable Rates FREE ESTIMATES (610) 767-7119 or 703-3848, cell

[Meh devun im neegscht Ausgang vun der „Town and Country“. A Dutch Easter Egg Hunt (Part 1 of 2) Every year we again have an Easter egg hunt for our five grandchildren. And I will explain it here how we put it together the last two years. First we must begin with eggs, right? But these are not the colored eggs that one made in the old days. We did not boil onion skins [brown], madder roots [red], alder brush catkins [yellow, some say green] or red cabbage leaves [blue, after it cools] in water and then lay in the eggs. No. We bought a newer type of egg in the store that was made from plastic. They are just shells that can be opened through the mid line, so that we can put something in them. When the grandchildren were still young, we put in either candy, or a few nickels or a quarter. But when they became a little older, then we had some eggs with a dollar bill in them. And now, we must have five dollar bills ready for the best prizes. It is a little

expensive for Poppy now, so I thought that perhaps they could “earn” those prizes. A five dollar bill is not placed in an egg. What is put in, is a piece of paper with something written on it, to point them to where they can find their money. And the writing is not scratched in English, but in Dutch. An example is: “In the kitchen under the table.” The eggs were then hidden in the back yard this year, but not in the grass for older children. They must be completely hidden. Years ago, we had bought an above ground swimming pool. Over the winder that pool has a cover over it and I wiggled two eggs under that cover. Next to the pool I have an electric outlet box with a lid on it and I also hid an egg in there. … [The second part will be continued in the next issue of The Town and Country Gazette.] -Larry Gradwohl
