You don’t have to spend a fortune to make your home look great. If you think it's time for a few improvements but you’re not prepared to pay thousands of dollars to put in luxurious new carpeting or a swimming pool, keep reading. We’ve put together 19 budget - friendly projects that will increase the appeal—and the functionality—of your home without breaking the bank 1. Change Out Cabinet Hardware The kitchen is the place where everyone gathers, so you want yours to look good, but a full remodel can be cost-prohibitive. Fortunately, you can add a fresh new look just by replacing old cabinet pulls and knobs, an upgrade that can come in under $100. Choose new hardware that suits your style—maybe vintage faceted glass knobs for a boho-chic look or sleek chrome knobs for contemporary flair. 2. Front Door Your front door sets the tone for the rest of the house. If it's drab, it won't make much of an impression on anyone who stops by, be they guests

or prospective buyers. Painting the front door can renew the look of the whole front facade, for a mere $50 to $80—the price of a good exterior enamel. Choose bold blues or rustic reds to draw attention, or opt for soft tans or grays for classic appeal. 3. Clean Up Your Water Tired of serving your guests cloudy iced tea? Mineral deposits (and sometimes, pollutants) can cause tap water to take on an unappetizing, hazy appearance. For healthful, crystal-clear water, expect to spend around $300 for a good-quality under-sink reverse osmosis system, such as the Home Master Reverse Osmosis Filter system. These systems put reverse osmosis, the same process used to produce some types of bottled water, right at your fingertips. 4. Paint an Accent Wall To transform a room, you don't have to paint all four walls. In fact, painting just one wall in a contrasting or complementary color can give the entire space a new lease on life. Even better, the project will cost you less than $40 for a gallon of interior latex paint, plus a few more bucks for a roller, brush, and pan. Accent walls are a great addition to virtually any room, from the bedroom to the living room and beyond. Try to coordinate decorative elements, such as lamps or rugs, with the accent wall color for a polished look.

5. Build a Raised Flower Bed Boost your home’s curb appeal by adding a raised flower bed, which you can build for $200 or less. In choosing the materials, try to complement those used in your home, whether bricks, wood, or stone. Carefully assess your property from the street to determine the best spot for the flower bed, and be sure to fill it with rich soil. Opt for annuals that offer bright splashes of color, keep it simple by planting attractive, low-maintenance perennials, or plant a mixture of the two. Continued on page 12

Home Upgrades Continued from page 9
6. Upgrade Your Mailbox If your old mailbox has seen better days, replacing it with a new, more decorative one will enhance the appeal of your front facade. For under $100, you can purchase a new curbside mailbox. (You may, however, need to pour a concrete base.) If your mailbox is attached to the house, consider upgrading to a trendy model, such as Yahead’s Vintage WallMounted Letterbox. 7. Trade Up to a Keyless Entry Forget fumbling with keys! Today’s new keyless locks are safe and efficient, and they're manufactured to complement a range of styles. For less than $300, you can purchase a keyless lockset, complete with an exterior handle and touch screen, such Schlage’s Z-Wave Camelot Touchscreen Deadbolt. Not only will a smart lockset eliminate the hassle of keys, it will also improve the appearance of your entry. 8. Off with Shutters Adding decorative shutters to the windows on the front of your home can amp up curb appeal, and the upgrade won't cost a fortune. You can either build your own shutters from exterior-grade lumber and paint them to suit, or choose premade options
12
in a complementary color, for instance, MidAmerica’s Board-and-Batten Shutters in midnight blue. 9. Plank a Wall with Shiplap For a touch of rustic charm, try covering one or more interior walls with shiplap. This horizontal cladding is trending everywhere. For less than $100, you can install shiplap planks on a 12-foot by 8-foot wall, then finish it off with paint. An antiqued whitewashed look is traditional, but feel free to paint shiplap in any color you choose. 10. Add Outdoor Accent Lighting Your yard need not fade away after dusk. For less than $100, you can install outdoor accent lights to illuminate plantings, walkways, or even the entire exterior of your house. Accent lights, such as Zuckeo’s Six-Piece Low-Voltage Set, can be aimed up or down to highlight the best features of your house or landscaping. 11. Refurbish Stairs with Carpet Treads Real wood staircases are lovely, but over time foot traffic can dull the centers of the treads, making the whole staircase look worn and tired. Refinishing a wood staircase is time-consuming and messy, but you can give your stairs a fresh appearance without opening a single can of stripper. For under $200, you can cover worn spots and add a touch of luxury with traditional carpet treads like these Sydney

Treads. As a bonus, treads provide a skid-free surface that will help minimize slips and falls. 12. Add Style with Crown Molding Crown molding—the molding that sits between the top of a wall and the ceiling—draws the eye upward and adds panache to any room. Crown molding, available at home improvement stores, sells for $4 to $8 per linear foot and comes in lengths of up to 16 feet. Easy to install, crown molding can make a builder-grade home look like a classic. 13. Vent a Steamy Bathroom Unvented bathrooms can suffer from peeling paint and warped cabinetry. They can even promote the growth of mold if the steam from a bath or shower lingers too long. For around $100 (plus the cost of installation, if you can't do it yourself), you can keep your bathroom cleaner and healthier by installing a vent fan like Delta’s BreezSignature Fan. Especially if you live in an older home with an unvented bathroom, this is one upgrade you shouldn’t put off. 14. Switch to a Programmable Thermostat For less than $50, you can replace your old manual thermostat with a programmable model that will turn the heat (and AC) on and off according to your predetermined schedule. With a programmable thermostat, such as Orbit’s Clear Comfort Pro Thermostat, you'll never again have to come home
to a chilly house. Not only are these programmable thermostats more efficient than the old ones, but their sleek styling will freshen up the look of your wall. 15. Replace Old Draperies If your curtains have faded over the years, or if you just don’t care for the style anymore, you can change the entire look of a room just by switching them out. Wispy draperies foster a soft, romantic ambience, while strong colors and bold designs draw the eye and make a statement. Putting in new drapes gives you a chance to try something Continued on page 14

different—you can even install the rods at ceiling height to create the illusion of taller windows. If you install them yourself, you can probably keep the cost of new drapes under $150 per window. 16. Dim the Lights Bright, harsh ceiling lights can make a room look stark and washed out, but you can put the lights back to rights by installing dimmer switches. Standard dimmer switches run less than $20 per switch; for around $50, you can upgrade to a smart switch, such as the GE Z-Wave Plus Smart Dimmer Switch, that connects with your home network.

17. Put Up New House Numbers If your house numbers are small or dull, they're dragging down your curb appeal and doing little to guide visitors—or even first responders—to your house. For $10 to $15 per numeral, you can replace drab house numbers with clearer options in the material of your choice, for instance, wrought iron, bold brass, ceramic, or elegant brushed nickel. For around $100, you can even go the custom route, with something like this Rolling Hills Personalized Plaque. 18. Paint Old Vinyl Flooring If your old vinyl or laminate flooring is showing signs of wear—or if you just can’t stand to look at it any longer—you can paint it! While this upgrade requires time and preparation, for around $200 you can buy two colors of flooring enamel and a durable acrylic sealer to apply on top of the painted floor. Checkerboard patterns are traditional, but don’t be afraid to try stripes or other geometric designs. 19. Frame Your TV Flat-screen TVs are all the rage, but they can be eyesores when they're not in use. Camouflage a too-visible television by hanging it on the wall and framing it like a painting. Picture frame molding, such as this selection from Country Art House, sells for $1 to $10 per linear foot, depending on the material it's made from and how ornate it is. Selling Your Home? source: The Walden & Randall Team
Your home is one of the most valuable assets you have. So most of the time, when you sell your home, your main goal is to make as much money as possible on the sale. Here are some tips on how to prepare your home so you can get the most value in today’s market place. First impressions are key. The first minute of a buyer previewing a home is the most crucial. Therefore, the exterior curb appeal is one of the most important items to address. Landscaping should be neat and clean. Trimmed bushes, fresh mulch, luscious green grass all make a difference.
In addition, any areas that have peeling or faded paint should be re-painted. Today’s buyers do not want to do immediate repairs, so if you see something that needs repaired, fix it. Inside your home, the best investment you can make is fresh, neutral paint colors throughout and new floor covering where necessary. Stained or worn carpet, cracked tiles, and torn linoleum should all be replaced. Worn hardwood floors should be refinished to a sparkle. Certain additions or major improvements may provide a solid return on your investment, and Continued on page 18

Selling Your Home? Continued from page 16
some will not. If you currently have one bathroom, adding a half or full bath is a very good investment. Adding a garage if there is none is also money well spent. If your kitchen cabinets and counters are aged and worn, replacement is recommended. If they are dated but in good condition, you may not recoup your entire replacement cost. Many of today’s buyers expect and even demand granite countertops, so this can be a good investment and worth the effort to replace your existing countertops. Roofs and heating/AC systems are a major expense. If your existing roof is within 5 years of it’s life expectancy, it will pay to have a new roof installed. This is something buyers and their inspectors take note of. If your furnace is old and not operating efficiently, it should be replaced. Many buyers do not have the extra money available when they buy a home to do any of these “capital improvements”. You will be able to sell your home at a higher price, and negotiate less if major items are newer. If there are items you are not sure of, it is recommended to have a complete home inspection done prior to putting your home on the market. This will shed light on any issues that may need to

be addressed. The more issues you can take care of, the more you will make on the sale of your home. Have the written report available for potential buyers, along with a list of the items you have addressed. This may also negate potential buyers from doing their own inspections which is always a good thing. Finally, just as important as getting your home ready to sell, is choosing the right Realtor. You will want someone who will look out for your best interests. Ask your friends, relatives and business associates for recommendations. See who is doing the most marketing in your area. Search online and see who has a strong presence in your area and a comprehensive and user-friendly website. Generally speaking, a Realtor with experience, who has worked through fluctuating markets, will have the knowledge to help you price your home effectively for a quick sale and (negotiate) highest and best price and terms. Market conditions are continually changing so hiring an agent who knows how to navigate the trends is essential to achieving the best results. Look for a Realtor who has earned professional designations. This is a sign they take the profession seriously and have educated themselves to be more proficient. Not all Realtors are the same, so you may want to interview a few agents to find the best fit.

Buying a Home? source: The Walden & Randall Team
Buying a home should be a fun and exciting experience, but sometimes it can feel like a daunting, stressful task in today’s real estate market. Follow the steps below and you can make the whole process easier and stress free! First, and most importantly, find a Realtor who is looking out for your best interests. Ask friends, relatives, and co-workers for recommendations. Find Realtors who are active in the area you want to live. Interview a few Realtors to find out how much experience they have, their knowledge of the local area and market, and how many homes they sell on average each year. It is also helpful to ensure you have good “chemistry” with the agent. Remember, purchasing a home is a team effort and you will want someone that you mesh well with. The next step is to get pre-approved for a mortgage. A “pre-approval letter” confirms you are capable of purchasing a home at a certain price. In most cases, it is necessary to have this prior to looking at any homes. Ask your Realtor for a few recommendations of lenders they work with. Real estate agents will refer mortgage lenders who they trust will get their clients to the closing table. If you
decide to shop and compare, make sure interest rates are competitive and compare lender’s upfront costs. Choose a reputable lender to make sure they can give you the mortgage with all the terms and fees they advertise. FYI - Mortgage lenders require a “paper trail” of your down money and closing cost funds. If the money you will be using to purchase your home is a “gift” from a relative, or “cash in a cookie jar”, it must be deposited into your bank account at least 3 months prior to applying for a mortgage. Buying a Home? Continued from page 19
Now that you know your price range, it’s time to start shopping! Make a list of “must haves” and “would like to have” amenities. Have your Realtor provide a list of available homes that fit most of your criteria. Review the list with your agent and select your top 3-5 homes. These will be the best homes currently available, so most of the time you will be able to find the right home fairly quickly. Keep in mind that you may not find everything you are looking for in one home. A good rule of thumb is to consider homes that have at least 70% of your wish list. When you find the right home, your next step is to work with your Realtor to prepare an Agreement of Sale with the price and terms that you are comfortable with. This includes the purchase price, the amount of money you will be putting down as a deposit, the date you want to settle, along with any inspections you choose to do. Make sure you review the entire agreement and understand all the terms and conditions. Once you have successfully negotiated a purchase, and have a fully executed Agreement of Sale, you are now “in escrow”. Your first tasks will be to schedule your inspections, and provide your down money, as you have limited time to do so.Your agent should be able to provide you with a list of reputable home inspectors. This is also the time you will
formally apply for your mortgage. Over the course of your home purchase, your Realtor, lender, and title company will be working with you up until your settlement date to ensure you make it to the closing table. It is important to know that while you are in escrow, major purchases, like furniture, cars, expensive toys, should not be made until after you close on your home. Any money spent or charged to credit cards can affect your ability to get mortgage. If all goes as planned, you should be in your new home within 30-45 days. All that’s left to do is pack!

lackadaisical. Sticking the onions in the ground reminds us of what we want to say about planting gardens. Our advice to all the people that have children is to let them help get the garden prepared and planted this year and to leave a little patch of it for the children to have their own garden and to take care. This we had to do when we were a small fry, but it was not until the last few years that we honestly found out, what something like that would mean in a child’s life when he was growing up. We planted our little garden with all sort of things to eat every summer and when we were working in it, the children [from the neighborhood] came over by it and asked what is this and what is that. When the bean plants just came out of the ground a little, they asked if they were ready to pick. They tried sometimes to take the garden hoe in their hands and hack out a large plant [weed], but they haven’t quite got the knack. Our job during the evening is to teach children, who do not succeed as well in school as they should. We come to a few places where the boys work at nothing when they are not in school, other than playing ball till dark. Right now they think the purpose of life is just to play. When they become grown-ups and must go to work, they can’t get a handle on it no how. We also come to a place, to a boy, who lives in the country. He APRIL 4, 2019 || townandcountrygazette.com
helps work in the garden; has two sheep right now, both of which have twins; and he sees how his mom sets the chicken on the eggs so little chicks can hatch. What an education such a boy has, when he grows up and must be ready to go out in the world and earn a living. [Remember] God put Adam and Eve in a garden. Schprichwadde: Proverbs (From: Proverbs of the Pennsylvania Germans) Verschpreche macht Schulde. Promises make debtors. Der Voggel kennt mer an de Feddre. The bird is known buy his feathers. Er batt so viel as en fimft Raad im Waage. He is as useful as a fifth wheel added to a wagon. Wer weess, as er nix weess, weess viel. He knoweth much, who knows that he knows nothing. [ Florence Baver typifies the attitude of rural Dutch people of that time – promoting a strong work ethic and the superiority of rural life over urban life in preparing the young for the responsibilities of adulthood. She grew up in rural Berks County and had taught in rural one and two room schools prior to moving to Easton.]

CONSUMER ALERT: Attorney General Shapiro Warns Consumers to be Aware of “We Buy Homes” Scam submitted by Joe Grace
Attorney General Shapiro is warning Pennsylvanians to be aware of deceptive advertising by businesses posting “We Buy Homes” signs on street corners. The signs are often a scam—looking to take advantage of Pennsylvanians suffering from debt, job loss, or other significant life changes and looking to make some fast money. Businesses behind the “We Buy Houses” signs typically offer to purchase a consumer’s home for

less than actual value, and the “Cash for Homes” scams can take two different forms. One targets those who are trying to avoid foreclosure. The buyer may promise relief from foreclosure, but will then take the deed without paying off the mortgage balance, leaving the home-seller ultimately responsible for the monthly payments and subject to foreclosure. Another scam is when the buyer lures sellers in with promises to take the house “as is,” allowing the seller to avoid having to make repairs. However, the buyer will sometimes back away from that promise and demand certain repairs to their satisfaction before accepting a deed, leaving the seller footing the bill of the repairs after all. “Pennsylvanians must be aware of scammers looking to take advantage of consumers looking to make money quickly to pay off debts or other expenses,” said Attorney General Josh Shapiro. “Signs offering to buy homes for cash are multiplying weekly on busy street corners, but these kinds of

transactions are often scams that leave homeowners in even worse financial shape than they were before. These scammers are attempting to exploit Pennsylvanians in vulnerable financial situations, and my Bureau of Consumer Protection isn’t buying it.” Attorney General Shapiro’s Bureau of Consumer Protection enforces the Unfair Trade Practices and Consumer Protection Law against unscrupulous buyers taking advantage of Pennsylvanians. The Bureau encourages real estate consumers selling their homes to consider: Home Appraisal – Obtain an appraisal to know the market value of your home. Independent Professional Advice – Seek real estate legal advice to evaluate key terms of a “Cash for Homes” real estate contract. If you believe you’ve been a victim of a “We Buy Homes”scam, you are encouraged to file a complaint with the Attorney General’s Bureau of Consumer Protection by visiting www.attorneygeneral.gov or by calling 800-441-2555 or sending an e-mail to scams@attorneygeneral.gov.

‘Mary Poppins’ flies high at Northampton Area High School submitted by Keri Lindenmuth
From March 21 through March 24, Northampton Area High School enchanted audiences with the theatre company’s performance of the Disney classic “Mary Poppins.” The musical is a 2019 Freddy Awards contender. “Mary Poppins,” based on the 1964 Disney film and the series of children’s books by P.L. Travers, tells the story of the Banks family, young Jane and Michael and their two parents who do not seem to have time for their children between societal obligations and work, and Mary Poppins, the

mysterious nanny who takes Jane and Michael on a series of adventures alongside Bert, the lovable chimney sweep. The stage production features many of the same Sherman Brothers music that made the film an instant classic: “Jolly Holiday,”“A Spoonful of Sugar,” “Feed the Birds,”“Let’s Go Fly a Kite,” and, of course, “Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious.” However, there are several new songs for audiences to enjoy, including “Practically Perfect,”“Playing the Game,” and “Anything Can Happen.” Senior Celia Doll portrayed the titular Mary Poppins with the perfect amount of sweetness, sternness, and mystery. Children in the audience awed as she soared through the night sky above London. Continued on page 48

DIY Ideas: 14 Home Improvement Projects That Cost Under $10 source: Kaitlyn Davis www.huffpost.com
Believe it or not, redecorating your home doesn't need to be a massive and expensive project. Simple touches like adding a decorative tray or changing your pillow cases can have dramatic effects. To help you get inspired, we pulled together 14 easy decorating ideas that will update your home without breaking your budget. In fact, most of these projects are completely free...and the rest weigh in at under $10. 1. Rearrange your furniture. This may sound simple, but rearranging furniture is a great (and free!) way to completely change the look and feel of your home. If you always find yourself climbing over an ottoman, move your couch back to create a passing lane. Is it too cramped? Try moving your side table to another room that's more spacious. 2. Change a light switch plate. Finding the light switch is always a daunting task, especially for guests. So why not try decoupaging pretty patterned paper to the plate for a nice pop of color? Your friends will thank you and a little touch of color will liven up any space. 3. Rearrange the bookshelf. Reorganizing
the bookshelf will easily make an entire room look more styled and polished, and you don't even have to get rid of anything. One tip is to arrange your books so they look like a smooth landscape of rolling hills. Put the tallest in the middle and fan out to the smallest or create multiple peaks (as long as the books flow together) or lay a few books on their side and stack them like a pyramid. 4. Buy fresh flowers. A vase full of fresh flowers instantly brings life to any space, especially in the dreary winter months when everything outside is cold and pretty lackluster. You don't need to get fancy--a bouquet of supermarket roses in a happy hue is enough to make a difference. 5. Make pillow covers. One yard of fabric is all you need to make two adorable decorative pillow covers. Adding a fresh pattern or color to your living room or bed will elevate the design and you can buy designer fabrics on sale for an inexpensive price. 6. Change your lightbulbs. Nothing is more frustrating than light bulbs burning out, especially Continued on page 50

Mary Poppins Continued from page 44
Senior Brandon Costanzo portrayed Bert, putting on his best Cockney accent and bringing just as much charisma and joy to the stage as Dick Van Dyke brought to the film. Junior Lauren Lalik and sophomore Emily Reed played the mischievous Jane and Michael Banks. They gave the audience plenty of laughs with their antics, especially alongside Elaina Bastow’s Mrs. Brill and Justin Abarca’s Robertson Ay, the Banks’ servants. Senior Brooke Brida played Banks matriarch, Winifred. While Mrs. Banks dearly loves her children, she struggles to find her place in London society and meet the expectations of her workaholic husband, portrayed by senior Austin Fleury. Both Brida and Fluery gave new dimensions to the Banks parents not explored in the original film. The main characters were joined by a large ensemble cast, colorful costumes, and a set that transformed the high school’s auditorium into a London park, a children’s nursery, and a middle class London home. Highlights of the musical included the tap dancing, dusty chimney sweeps of “Step in Time,” the colorful cast of characters in “Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious,” and a sky full of kites in “Let’s Go Fly a Kite.” Of course, you cannot
forget the high-flying theatrics that make Mary Poppins so fun. Both Doll and Costanzo took their turn flying across the stage, Costanzo doing front flips in the process. The musical was under the direction of Mrs. Gianna Neal. “I encouraged [the students] to study the film, but then put their own spin on it,” she said in her director’s notes. “[Mary Poppins] is such a beautifully warm and magical story, with riveting characters and some of the most gorgeous pieces of music, so it was important for me to preserve all of those things in our version,” she added. Northampton’s theatre company will have another chance to shine during the 2019 Freddy Awards on Thursday, May 23.

because replacing them is one of those things you put on the to-do list and immediately forget about. Take the time to replace all of those lights for a brighter, happier space. In your bedroom or den, try opting for lower wattage lights (between 20- and 50-watts) to create a cozier and more romantic ambience. 7. Make A Decorative Tray. Trays are one of the most useful accessories because they are functional and fashionable. They're also easy to make by repurposing other household items, like a frame or mirror, for an inexpensive project. 8. Transform A Coffee Table. If you have a glass-topped coffee table, try sticking photographs underneath the glass for a new look. It'll bring a personal touch to the space, reduce the need for frames and changing the photos is easy. If you don't have a glass-topped coffee table, but like the idea, you can easily buy custom-cut glass from the hardware store. 9. De-clutter. It's amazing what a good cleaning can do to a space. throwing out fifty things will not only free-up your home, but will alter your mindset as well. 10. Change your knobs. Changing all of your hardware can get expensive, but why not change the knobs on your nightstand for a low-cost alternative. Two or three knobs is all you'll need to make them look good as new! 11. Frame a piece of fabric. Buying artwork can be very expensive, so try framing a piece of decorative fabric or an old scarf instead. 12. Change glass cabinet doors. It's easy to repaint a wooden door, but what about when you have glass doors and are tired of people being able to peek at your mess? Turns out you can paint that too. If you're done with your glass door, paint over them from the inside or staple fabric over the glass. If you don't have fabric, you can use free printable decorative paper instead! 13. Create a hanging plate display. Do you have a gorgeous set of china sitting in the cabinet? Pull out those dishes and mount them on your wall. You'll transform an empty wall and display an otherwise hidden collection. 14. Edge a shelf with ribbon. Update tired shelves by covering the edges with ribbon, fabric or paper. Use a fun pattern or bold color to turn the unit into a fun, statement piece.

Street Art semifinalists reception submitted by Linda Baker
The 10 semifinalists in the Lehigh Carbon Community College (LCCC) street art project, “Wall on Hall,” will be showcased at a reception set for 6 to 8 p.m., Thursday, April 18, at the Donley Center, 718 Hamilton Street in downtown Allentown. Members of the community are invited to view and vote on the semifinalists’ art submissions, part of the process to select five artists who will create a mural promoting diversity along the blank wall of the alley side of the Donley Center. Miniature versions of the proposed art will be on display. The mural installation will express the individual visions of the five artists, each producing one of five side-by-side panels on Hall Street that measure 5 feet wide by 9 feet tall. Each artist was encouraged to create a design that represents the themes of diversity, equity and inclusion. The transformation of a blank wall into a piece of art will reflect the ongoing transformation of the City of Allentown. The artists will be on hand at the reception to engage with the community and discuss their artistic vision for the mural.
Artists will begin installation in April 2019. The process of street art and mural installation will allow the community to interact with artists as they work to enhance the beauty of the neighborhood. Murals will be completed by June 1, 2019, with an unveiling and artist reception scheduled in July. This public art project has received funding support from the PA Council on the Arts and Lehigh Valley Arts Council. The artists and titles of their submissions for the mural are: Camille Stanley (“Lo-Fi Streets”) Corey Reifinger (“Neighbors”) Monica Brensinger (“Allentown Events) Naomi Rebecca Fenstermaker Wilson ("An Edition of Allentown") Natalie Lucre (“Trip Roads”) Elizabeth Ramos (“Salad Days”) Pedro J. LeDee Jr. (“City Life”) Albert Negron III ("Hands on Love") Lila Shokr (“Flourish”) Alex Ortiz (“Allentown PRIDE”)
