From The Editor’s Desk. This is our 2nd annual Blue Mountain Dining edition, which is one of my favorite issues we do all year. We had a great response to our Best Restaurant Reader’s poll, which is awesome, because it shows you guys really support your local businesses and also seem to enjoy eating at local restaurants as much as I do. By the way, dining out is one of my favorite weekend activities and I am always interested in some culinary adventurism. Jess, my girlfriend, and I have somewhat become “foodies” – people who like to travel and try new restaurants and new styles of food- in the past few years. We are going to be making our yearly pilgrimage to Florida for the Food & Wine Festival at Epcot Center again this October to sample all of the delicious food from around the world. My personal favorite stops are the Greece and Japan stands in the World Showcase, you can’t beat good spicy tuna roll sushi or roasted feta cheese with honey and a glass of pinot noir. My mouth is watering just thinking of it. The cheddar cheese soup at the Canada stand is also wonderful, although it probably goes down a little easier during a cold northern winter than a sunny 90-degree Florida day. If I ever win the lottery I’d love to be able to eat at the “big name” restaurants like Brasserie Les Halles in New York City or Moto in Chigaco. It’s not just the high-end stuff that I like however.
Joe Korba
I love getting up on a Sunday morning and getting a mozzarella cheese and jalapeño omelet from one of our many diners. I’m also a buffalo wing connoisseur and enjoy hitting the wing nights at local establishments; even though I do have one particular location that I think has the best wings around (luckily located only a few minutes from my home). Some of my best child hood memories are when my dad used to take me to lunch at the best hot dog place on the planet, Jimmy’s Quick Lunch, on Broad St. in Hazleton after hitting the comic book store. Jimmy, of course, has a secret recipe for the chili that tops his dogs that hasn’t changed in, at least, as long as I’ve been alive. I still stop in and grab a dozen or so hot dogs to go whenever I’m in the area and Jimmy still recognizes me even after all these years. Just stepping under the Jimmy’s Quick Lunch neon sign into the old school Formica and fluorescent dining room is a nostalgic trip to the past for me. It’s amazing the role some of these restaurants play in our lives. Well, I hope you guys enjoy the issue and make sure to check out our Best Restaurant winner as well as Tyler’s great spring sports preview in his Extra Point column.

Walk Now for Autism Speaks - Join Team Beltzville
Imagine for a moment hearing these words... “your child has autism.” With those four words, your world is a different place. Every day families are hearing these words from their doctors and their lives are being changed forever. For a child with autism, the struggle can be much more intense. Every day situations like school, being on the playground, making friends, homework and joining sports teams is made difficult and sometimes impossible for reasons beyond their control.

You can help change the future for these children and their families by joining with Autism Speaks to help raise funds and find a solution. From lemonade fundraisers, handmade pins and national walks like the Walk Now for Autism Speaks, thousands are joining the fight to show support and unity against the fastest growing developmental disorder in the United States. Erika Olson and her team of volunteers “Team Beltzville” will be joining the walk in the Lehigh Valley on April 21 at the Lehigh Parkway. The walk starts at 10 am with registration beginning at 8:30 am. Team Beltzville is made of a group of local volunteers hoping to help raise money and awareness for the cause and is headed by Olson. Erika has been working with the students at the CLIU #21 to make homemade puzzle piece pins like the ones pictured as a fundraiser. The pins, made from painted and decorated jig saw puzzles are $1 suggested donation and can be picked up at area businesses, including the Beltzville Bar & Grill, Dunkin Donuts in Walnutport and the Town & Country Gazette office. Anyone wishing to donate to or join Team Beltzville can do so online at www.walknowforautismspeaks.org or at any of the area businesses listed above.

2012 Readers Poll Favorite Restaurant Old Post Inn & Backdoor Restaurant
By Joe Korba The competition for our 2nd annual reader’s poll was heated. Two area restaurants were neck and neck until the very final week of voting. The Old Post Inn & Backdoor Restaurant handily beat the competition with a last minute voting push by the restaurant’s very enthusiastic and loyal regulars. According to Jo Lehr, who along with her husband Barry and mother-in-law Shirley own the business, regular Old Post patron Madeline Kush was the catalyst for the vote landslide that came pouring into our office. Way to go Ms. Kush for energizing the vote and supporting your favorite place to grab a bite. “We were all really excited for Owners: Jo, Shirley, and Barry Lehr the competition, our customers were too,” says Jo. Shirley and her husband Butch purchased the Old Post Inn on the outskirts of Slatington 28 years ago. “Butch and Barry always wanted a hotel,” Shirley says. Jo joined them soon after and has been cooking there for 20 years. “Business has been great, but we had to work really hard to build it up. We had to overcome a bad reputation from before [we owned it],” Shirley explains. One of the first things you’ll notice Staff: Debbie Strohl , Tanya Distler, when you arrive at the Old Post Lou Goida, and Crystal Kistler Inn is all of the bar. They host private parties, banquets, pool Green Bay Packers leagues and are the home to the Rotary Club since their prior meeting place closed last year. memorabilia The Old Post Inn also offers bar favorites like hot adorning the wings and an “On the Fry” menu that features 24 walls, including styles of french fries. “We enjoy being part of the the two shares community, all of our employees were born and of stock that raised around here. But, the most fulfilling part Barry owns in for me is the cooking. I love coming up with new the team. Barry, ideas and new recipes,” Jo says. who grew up surrounded by Dallas Cowboys fans Barry, Jo, Shirley and the rest of the staff at jokingly explains that as a Packers fan he is the The Old Post Inn and The Backdoor Restaurant “only one with brains in the family.” The Old Post would like to thank everyone for their support Inn is an official Packer’s Fan Zone, but welcomes and are holding a Customer Appreciation Party anyone to come watch games on it’s many big on April 22nd to thank all of their loyal customers screen TV’s during the season. for making their bar and restaurant a success for The relaxed, friendly atmosphere makes it easy so many years. Shirley ruminates on the business to understand why the Old Post is so popular with her and her family has owned and operated since regulars and new patrons alike. “The customers 1984. “We’ve been here so long it’s like Old Post here are like family. The staff is so close that we the next generation – we are serving the kids of even take vacations together,” says Jo. “We travel our original customers that started coming here in a pack like wolves,” Shirley jokes. years ago.” Its Jo’s cooking that keeps the customers coming back. “I grew up in the business. Venture Group Announces Progress at Slatington Trailhead Anyone traveling between Slatington and Walnutport has seen the dramatic results of the improvements to the Slatington Trailhead. This Trailhead serves as the hub of eight multi-use trails in the Northern Lehigh area, and is attracting large numbers of walkers, bicyclists, cross-country skiers, and fishermen. A cooperative effort by the D&L Heritage Corridor Commission and Lehigh County brought new landscaping and improved parking, adding to the informational kiosks and outdoor amenities including a picnic table, benches and bike rack that have helped make the facility more

convenient and comfortable. The biggest news is the progress made in construction of the restrooms and pavilion. All of this construction work is being done by the Venture Group, an all-volunteer association of our local volunteer civic organizations, municipal governments, and caring individuals. All funding has been obtained from donations, local fund-raisers, and hundreds of volunteer labor hours that have been contributed to the project. Completion is planned for spring of this year with installation of restroom fixtures and historic siding for the pavilion’s kitchen. The buildings have been designed to invoke memories of the Slatington train station and sit very closely to where the original train station once stood. Additional monies are needed to complete this project including purchasing fixtures and miscellaneous building supplies. In these difficult economic times, it is rewarding to see how the entire community has come together to support the Venture Group’s effort. The trailhead will be a center of community pride and a benefit to our residents and businesses. When complete, the pavilion will be available for rental through the Borough of Slatington’s participation in the Venture Group! Anyone who is able to help move this project to completion and donate money or materials to the Venture Group’s effort are asked to mail them to The Venture Group. c/oN.L.H.S., PO Box 101, Slatington, Pa., 18080, or contact Venture Group chairman Jason Breidinger at (484) 601-2585 in order to lend a hand. All funds are received through the Northern Lehigh Historical Society, a 501(c)(3) non-profit, and donations are tax deductible.

Senator for a Day
Senate Majority Whip Pat Browne recently held a “Senator for a Day” student government workshop at Muhlenberg College for local high school students and it was featured in this month’s installment of “The Browne Report” television show. “Senator for a Day,” a yearly program, provides an opportunity for local high school students to get a taste of what it is like to be a state legislator and how the legislative process works in Pennsylvania. Students are given an opportunity to participate in the full process of passing a bill through the state Senate. The morning began with Senator Browne explaining the legislative process to the high school students from nine local school districts. The students were then broken down into
Linda’s
groups (Senate Committees) with each committee discussing two pieces of legislation. The day culminated with all the students, acting as the Senate body, voting on each piece of legislation that was passed out of the three committees to see if they had enough votes to pass the Senate. Participating in this year’s “Senator for a Day” were: Parkland; Sophia Beese, Matt Kleinhenz, Raj Shah and Northwestern; Noah Breininger, Kailee Fisher, Jake Hoover, Nolan Warner, Emily Gutgold. “I have really enjoyed the opportunity to share the legislative process with high school students here in the Lehigh Valley and Monroe County,” Senator Browne said. “It is important our young people see and understand how our government works. It’s an eye-opening experience for our student Senators.”

Denise G. Pierce May 4, 1963 – March 13, 2012
Our family wants to thank everyone for all the love and support you have shown us throughout Denise’s long, hard-fought battle against her malignant brain tumor. She never gave up and was determined to beat this terrible disease but her body was robbed of the strength to keep on fighting.
We are so appreciative of all of your prayers, cards, flowers, monetary donations, casseroles, baked goods and visits to our home. Denise loved when people stopped by to see her. We lost our beautiful angel, but she left all of us such wonderful and special memories. Her radiant smile will be with us forever. God Bless all of your for caring and showing her your love. Sincerely, The Family of Denise (Rex) Pierce

We’ll be doing a litter patrol over the entire 4 ½ mile stretch of canal and also maintenance projects such as pruning trees, fixing benches, etc. Persons interested in helping should meet at the pavilion and wear long pants and long sleeved shirts. Everyone is welcome to help. Helping with the canal cleanup is a great way for high school students to earn a few hours towards their graduation requirement. Thrivent Financial will supply coffee, donuts and lunch. Can’t make it out to one of these cleanups? Grab a trash bag and some gloves and clean up the area around your home. Help make the community look beautiful and help the environment at the same time!

SADD Prom Promise
(L-R) Caleb Johnson and Aimee Oertner. Recently, the Northern Lehigh High School SADD organization won two grants through efforts of the students. The first grant was for $900 to help pay for t-shirts for the students. To be eligible for the grant, the SADD group organized a "Pledge" for prom season. NLHS came up with the "Prom Promise" that students signed when they purchased tickets for the prom. If students signed the "Prom Promise" they were eligible to receive a SADD t-shirt. The shirt reads "I VOW TO MAKE GOOD DECISIONS." On the front of
the red shirt was the SADD National logo. As of press time, 62 students signed the Prom Promise. SADD also plans to give t-shirts away during the sale of Senior Farewell tickets the week of April 16-20 if seniors sign "The Night of Life" contract. SADD's goal is to give out all 150 t-shirts for students vowing to make good decisions. For the second grant, SADD worked in cooperation with the junior and senior class officers and advisors to write Public Address Announcements promoting family values to be fed during the Prom and Farewell by the DJs. There was a very strict protocol that had to be followed including how many times per hour the announcement would be heard at the events. By fulfilling the requirements for the grant, the NLHS SADD group earned a $1,300 grant that will cover the cost of the DJs at both the Prom and the Farewell. Officers for SADD are the following: President Caleb Johnson, Vice President Aimee Oertner, Treasurer Dalton Johnson, Secretary Marissa Fatzinger

NL Prom Promise PSA’s •Underage drinking makes our highways less safe, our schools less effective, and our future less certain. Alcohol and teenagers don’t mix, especially not on prom night. If you are underage, don’t drink. •If you’re underage, the pressures to try alcohol are real. So are the consequences: car crashes, fights, drowning, rape, and addiction. Do yourself a favor, know the facts. They are sobering. •Prom, it is finally here. Unfortunately, prom means parties and alcohol. Remember, if you are under 21, it's against the law to drink. But did you know that people under 21 cannot have ANY alcohol in their bloodstream under the state's Zero Tolerance Law? And if caught, you could face severe penalties. Before you drink, THINK. •You and your friends are finally at the prom. You've found the perfect outfit, and you have shown up looking great. Don’t ruin your night with the dangers of alcohol. Alcohol is a leading cause of death and injury among young people. Play it smart. Don’t drink. •Did you know? Alcohol is responsible for more than 2,000 deaths of people ages 15 to 20 each year. Don’t be another statistic, especially not on the night of prom. Think before you drink.

Extra Point Continued from Page 30 C/OF Zack Merkle; Fr. SS/P Chris Rabasco; Jr. 1B/OF Nate Case • Outlook: The Trojans need to get experience in their pitching staff. They only have one returning starting picher in Hurd. Galucy is looking for the plethora of returning upperclassmen to score runs to keep pressure off of the young pitchers. Lehighton: • Coach: Brian Polaha (3rd season, 30-18) • Last year: 12-10 overall, 7-5 MVC • Postseason: Lost to Pleasant Valley in MVC semifinals; lost to Northwestern in District 11 3A quarterfinals. • Returnees: Jr. C Jacen Nalesnik; Sr. 3B/1B Alex Storm; Sr. OF Anthony Farole; Sr. OF Steve Shanton; Sr. INF/P AJ Wenrich; Sr. P/2B Parker David • Newcomers: Jr. P/INF Josh Kern; Soph. INF/P James Franco; Sr. OF Jayden Hensley; Soph. OF/P Anthony Rossino • Outlook: Polaha was being very realistic about his season when I asked him what his outlook was on it, “I’m hopeful that we can make the MVC playoffs and hopefully qualify for District [11] play. However, inexperience on the mound and in the infield might make those goals difficult.” It is a good possibility that the Indians will make the playoffs. It will take a few weeks of games to decipher Lehighton’s chacnes. Palmerton: • Coach: Tom Smelas ( 9th season, 45-96) • Last year: 4-16 overall, 3-13 in CL • Returnees: Sr. 2B Aaron Cook; Sr. P/INF Tyler Svetik; Sr. OF Tanner Gutekunst; Sr. OF Mike Horvath; Sr. INF/C Mike Sander; Jr. P/DH/1B Ryan Saylor; Jr. P/INF CJ Cressman; Jr. OF/C Nick Fiouris; Jr. C/P Lee Kuntz • Newcomers: Sr. 1B/P Cody Geist; Sr. P/INF/OF Brett Snyder; Jr. P/INF Cody Peters; Jr. 1B Alex Zmeyski • Outlook: Experience runs through this roster. These players haven’t experience winning very often which could hurt them. Palmerton is the underdog in the North Division and they will need to notch some early wins if they want to stay out of the basement. Northwestern: • Coach: Len Smith (30th season, 333-279) • Last year: 13-9 overall, 9-7 in CL • Postseason: Beat Lehighton in District 11 3A quarterfinals; lost to Pottsville in D-11 3A semifinals. • Returnees: Sr. OF Payton Bachman; Sr. 3B Ty Cunningham; Sr. 2B Austin Kelly; Sr. 1B Matt Maher; Sr. P/ OF Mitchell Snyder; Sr. SS/P Talon Williams; Sr. P/3B Dave Dorney; Sr. P/SS Kyle Lutton; Jr. P/OF Richard Perry • Newcomers: Sr. P/OF Tyler Bartholomew; Jr. 2B/P Dan Hunsberger; Jr. P/Of Alex Smith; Soph. C/P Collin Breidinger; Fr. OF/C Nick Rodrigues • Outlook: This roster is almost identical to last year’s successful team. They should be in thick of it all season and will be competing for a spot in the Colonial League playoffs.
Softball
Northern Lehigh: • Coach: Jon DeFrain (First year) • Last year: 12-9 overall, 9-7 in CL • Postseason: Lost to North Schuylkill in quarterfinals of D-11 2A tournament • Returnees: Sr. OF Allison Beltz; Sr. C Megan Filchner;
Jr. 1B Sarah Frantz; Soph. P Kaelah Horwath; Jr. IF/OF Amber Kibler; Soph. IF/OF Cassie Toth • Newcomers: Soph. Kelsey Follweiler; Jr. Jennie Fronheiser; Soph. Chelsea Harlan; Fr. Kianna Marlatt; Fr. Amber Thomas: Soph. Shannon Weil • Outlook: A lot has yet to be determined with this team. The team can go either way. They can stay at the top of the standings like recent years or falter towards the basement. DeFrain is staying optimistic, “The coaching staff is very happy with how hard the girls have worked both in the offseason and already worked in the early going of the spring season. All of the girls clearly are determined to continue the Northern Lehigh Softball tradition.” I’m going to be pessimistic and expect a rebuilding period to ensue. Northampton: • Coach: Sally Whittaker-Kahn (Fourth season, 44-26) • Last year: 15-9 overall, 9-5 in LVC • Postseason: Lost to Bethlehem Catholic 4-1 in the LVC semifinals. In the District 11 4A tournament, defeated Pocono Mountain East 2-0 and Parkland 5-0, but lost to Pleasant Valley 1-0 in semifinals. • Returnees: Sr. CF Jesi Cericola; Sr. C/UT Katie Clancy; Sr. P/1B Kathyrn Dalton; Sr. C Shelby Fabian; Sr. 3b Ashley Gildner • Newcomers: Jr. 2B/OF Lauren Brosky; Jr. OF Erin Tiwold; Jr. SS/2B Megan Tiwold; Soph. OF Taylor Kerbacher • Outlook: The K-Kids are said to be the favorite in the North Division of the LVC after strong finish to last season and having most of the players on that roster returning. Seniors are prevalent on this team and that experience can take these girls far in to the palyoffs. Parkland: • Coach: Barry Search (3rd season, 23-14) • Last year: 13-8 overall, 8-6 in LVC • Postseason: Lost to Northampton 5-0 in District 11 4A quarterfinals • Returnees: Sr. 3B Jackie Oertner; Sr. 3B Shelby Belzecky; Sr. OF Kate Morgan; Sr. 1B Kristie Smerdon; Sr. OF Morgan Snyder; Sr. OF/C Jessica Warner; Sr. 2B Kylie Kline; Jr. P Kiera Heleva; Soph. 1B/P Morgan Rentzheimer • Newcomers: Jr. OF Danielle Clune; Jr. C Sarah Karmosky; Jr. OF Megan Muthand; Jr. OF Danielle Berman; Soph. 2B Alexis Oakley; Fr. SS/2B Emma Varrato • Outlook: Seniors are again the moral of this story. If they can get things going in their direction, the lady Trojans will be tough. Lehighton: • Coach: Todd Weaver (3rd season, 13-25) • Last year: 6-12 overall, 3-9 in MVC • Returnees: Sr. SS Emily Kollar; Sr. CF Krysten Breiner; Sr. C Jena Smith; Sr. P/OF Julianna Evans; Sr. P/OF/IF Krista Rehrig • Newcomers: Jr. IF/OF Sam Snyder • Outlook: Weaver has high hopes for his squad, “We have all of our varsity team from last year returning so I fully expect that with the experience and talent we have on the team, that we should be right in there for the MVC playoff hunt as well as the [District 11 playoff hunt].” With most of their roster from 2011 returning, look for Weavers expectations to come true. Palmerton: • Coach: Glenn Reimer (4th season, 19-41) • Last year: 7-11 overall, 5-11 in CL

Donkey Shenanigans
A man named, John Smith, moved to Arizona and bought a donkey from an old farmer named Ken for $100. The farmer agreed to deliver the donkey the next day. The next day, Ken drove up and said, “Sorry, but I have some bad news, The donkey died.” “Well, then, just give me the money back,” said Mr. Smith “Can’t do that. I went and spent it already.” Replied Ken “OK, then. Just unload the donkey,” said Mr. Smith. “What ya going to do with him?” asked Ken. “I’m going to raffle him off,” said Mr. Smith. “You can’t raffle off a dead donkey!” uttered Ken. “Sure can. Watch me. I just won’t tell that he’s dead,” said Mr. Smith. A month later Ken met up with the man and asked, “What happened with that dead donkey?” “I raffled him off, I did. I sold 500 tickets at two dollars a piece and made a profit of $998,” said Mr. Smith. “Didn’t anyone complain?” inquired Ken. “Just the guy who won. So I gave him his two dollars back,” said Mr. Smith.

This is the day which is commemorated for the time when Jesus rode to Jerusalem and the people laid Palm leaves in the street when he came. Now some books say in English, ‘branches’, but we just read that palm trees in that time did
not have branches, that they were palm leaves. Many churches use what they call palm leaves, but we were told that they are not a type of palm leaves, that grew in that time. The natural palm trees are very rare and the leaves would be very expensive; so now a type of willow, that is often called a palm, is used in churches. April 18, 1957 Green Thursday (Maundy Thursday) is here again and that means a large bowl of dandelion salad (or as some say ‘Pissabet’) must be on the table this day. And then the next day is Good Friday. In our family we never worked on that day and it still sticks in my mind that one can do enough work when he works on the other days throughout that week that he can take off Friday to think about the Savior. And then comes Easter where all are happy and joyous. Nice clothing and church attendance are the word for that day. On that day empty pews are rare and then on the following Sunday full pews are rare. Our wish right now is that all our readers have a nice, happy Easter. Here is good advice for young girls who can’t find a man. There doesn’t appear to be many of them. Most are fond of boys soon enough, but when someone has trouble to find one, this is what to do. (An elderly lady told me they did this years ago.) The young girl must go in the chicken coop in the evening when the roosters are on the roost. She must shake the roost and if a rooster crows, she will soon find a man.

March over to Northampton Sr. Ctr.
There was a lot of green at the Northampton Sr. center as the folks celebrated St. Patty's day with a party. The party was enhanced with entertainment from "The Hinkle Family". Goodies like green punch, snacks and of course, corned beef and cabbage were enjoyed by all. Spring Break saw us all in our college t's for a monthly birthday celebration. April will be showering us with more plans. Visits from our new young friends from Franklin Elementary brighten our day. We'll be painting Easter eggs, making birdhouses, crocheting & knitting class and of course "cards". We look forward to a visit with Pete Bently on the Irish Stick instrument on the 26th. As always something is always happening at the Northampton Senior Center. Area adults 60+ are welcome, hours: Monday-Friday 8:30-1:30, call Krista at 610-262-4977. We'll be seeing you!

SAVE UP TO 20% OF YOUR HEAT! If you have a fireplace in your home, 20% of your home’s heat can be lost up the flue! Do a simple candle test… light a candle and SLOWLY go around the edge of your fireplace opening – or the edge of the fireplace doors, for those homeowners with doors. See what happens to the flame. From the midpoint and up across the top, the flame will move slightly TOWARD the fireplace. This shows the heat leaving your house. At the bottom of the fireplace, the flame will move towards your room. This is the COLD AIR coming down the backside of the flue and heading straight into your cozy warm home! The Top Sealing Damper was originally invented as a replacement damper for rusted-out heatilator fireplace dampers. We have installed 900+ top-mount dampers, 300 as replacement dampers and 600 on masonry fireplaces. They save energy, reduce cold air drafts, make the room quieter, and make starting a fire easier because of the warm column of air that has replaced the standard cold, wet column of air that is normally in your flue.

This well constructed, superbly eningeered damper eliminates 90% of the winter heat and summer cooling loss that leaks past your current damper. It also eliminates downdrafts and keeps moisture and animals out of your chimney and home. Moisture in your chimney causes unwelcome odors and leads to deterioration of bricks and mortar. The Lyemance Top-Sealing Damper works year round to protect your chimney. That’s why thousands are installed each year.
• Easy to operate • Seals in warmth and energy • Stops animals from entering your home • Seals out moisture to extend chimney life • Stops downdrafts • Helps prevent chimney odors
Lyemance energysaving dampers are available only from chimney professionals

Professionals always sell the sturdiest, most durable, and most effective products available – the ones you can’t find in your local stores. Why? They stake their reputation on
what they sell. Lyemance Dampers are only sold through professionals because it takes a professional to properly size and install a Lyemance Damper. Once installed, it’s easy as pie to use – with a simple tug on the handle, it’s open and with another tug, it’s closed. Why wait? Begin saving energy and increase your comfort now. Don’t waste another dollar in energy loss – begin your long friendship with Lyemance, the leader in top-sealing dampers.
