From the Publisher’s Desk
Joe Korba
The very nature of publishing is environmentally unfriendly: we use an embarrassing amount of resources like paper, fuel for deliveries, the energy and chemicals it actually takes to put ink on the page. But we try to be as green as we possibly can. We recycle, our printer uses the most earth-friendly methods possible, and we try to keep waste to a minimum. Personally, I know most of the people on my staff care deeply about animals and the environment. Christine, one of our ad reps, has pretty much turned our office into a jungle with live plants and I always try to grow my own sustainable container garden in the spring and summer (although with all of the housework, I haven’t started it yet). As you can probably tell, this is our “Go Green” issue, an annual edition we do to help celebrate the start of spring. As always, I hope you enjoy this one and do your part to keep our planet just a little greener.

Great Food Rolls Into Galen Glen In April
Submitted by KATHLEEN MATSON Tailgating on a bumper 2015 season, Galen Glen Winery announces that Food Truck Fridays are returning to the vineyard. Winemaker Sarah Troxell said, “We chose Fridays because they are traditionally a date night in our area. It’s a great opportunity to take in the vineyard views with a glass of wine and a snack or dinner from a local food truck.” Tasting Room Manager Kathy Matson is excited about the line-up, noting they have trucks specializing in everything from fancy crepes, gluten-free and vegetarian options, BBQ, and comfort food. This year, the trucks are coming from the Lehigh Valley and also the Wilkes-Barre/ Scranton area. Matson said, “While we are not in a huge metro area like Philadelphia, food trucks are bursting onto the scene and we are happy to present some of the best culinary treats this area has to offer.” Food truck Fridays are scheduled from 5 to 8 p.m. the last Friday of the month, April through August (April 29, May 27, June 24, July 29, and August 29). The event is held rain or shine with limited sheltered seating and plenty of outdoor seating. The trucks attending each month

are listed on the winery’s website, www.galenglen. com. Food Truck Friday kicks off Friday, April 29 with the return of Full of Crepe, serving sweet and savory crepes. No reservations are required.

Meet The Staff
“Going green” is indeed great for our planet’s environment—but there are other green things out there making a difference, whether it’s green veggies strengthening our bodies or green screen technology changing the game for our favorite films. Green, as a color and a movement, is pretty prevalent in society. So what are some of your favorite green things? Joe Korba, Associate Publisher I love brussels sprouts roasted in infused olive oil, particularly garlic-infused. They are a favorite food—and green thing. Danielle Tepper, Editor Delicious green smoothies, that bright Christmas-y green, and I don’t know what it is about palm trees that are such a mood booster, but one glimpse of their spiky green fronds puts me in beach mode—and beaches make me happy! Christine Stroh, Account Executive I love the many fields and rolling hills in our area as they are turning from the brown dormancy of winter into the green vibrancy of life that is spring.
Catherine Stroh, Publishing Assistant So many of my favorite things are green: Asparagus, olives, spinach, basil, mint, cucumber, zucchini, and lime. I am also a lover of green grapes because those equal white wine. I approve anything lush and green in the environment that vibrantly signifies life! Tony Pisco, Art Director My favorite green is the green of the Philadelphia Eagles. It doesn’t matter if it's their current midnight green or their kelly green from back in the day, I’ll take either one. Donna Bachman, Accounting Manager Broccoli is a favorite food of mine—it’s green AND healthy.

Submitted by DINA TULLI DAVIS Marlyn Linski Kissner, executive director of the Carbon Chamber and Economic Development Corporation (CCEDC) and Vice President of the Greater Lehigh Valley Chamber (GLVCC), has been named one of the Top 25 Women in Business in northeast PA. An awards presentation honoring these exceptional women will take place this May. For 15 years, the Northeast Pennsylvania Business Journal and the Northeast Pennsylvania National Association of Women Business Owners have sponsored this prestigious award. Potential honorees are nominated by their peers and chosen by a slate of illustrious businesswomen based on the nominees’ contributions to their businesses and community. Over the years, Kissner’s work and influence in northeast PA have been far-reaching and undoubtedly evident as she has a warm, inviting personality, is a strong and committed business leader who gets things done, and has the natural ability to attract and bring people together for common good. Hired as a consultant for the Carbon Chamber in 2012, she had an influential role in the merger between the Carbon Chamber of Commerce and the Carbon Economic Development leading to the creation of the CCEDC. She has continued in a leadership role with the CCEDC developing membership relations, creating events and doing community outreach. Marlyn Kissner
Continued from Page 14 a Bachelor of Science degree in education from Kutztown University. When asked what has contributed to her great success in business, Kissner enthusiastically answered, “Networking with great people, making valuable connections to career paths, surrounding myself with a supportive team and inspiring mentors, and ultimately loving what I do! I also believe that it is important to be grateful for all that we are given in life.” Besides the overwhelming support that she receives from Bill, her husband of 20 years, and her brothers and sisters, her mentors: Martha Linski (her mother) and Tony Iannelli (GLVCC’s President and CEO) have been extremely influential in her life. Her mom, a single parent, has taught her the importance of being kind, working hard, and never giving up when challenged with the most difficult situations. Her superior, Tony Iannelli, has encouraged her to take risks, develop great relationships, take care of people and always be part of the solution. In addition to the people closest to her, Kissner will always be grateful to all of the people in her life, including coworkers, board members, local dignitaries and county commissioners, who have

also played important roles in her journey. Dina Tulli Davis, president of JumpSpark Creative Group and creative and marketing consultant for the CCEDC, has worked closely with Kissner for many years. She said,“Marlyn is so very deserving of this honor. She is just one of those people whom you have to like. Her high energy, enthusiasm, and positive attitude are infectious. She goes the extra mile for this organization and its members. Along with her team, she has led the construction of a solid and strong foundation for the Chamber. The organization continues to grow every month and has a very bright future ahead. This is because she is always focused on doing what is best for her members and the community she loves. She wants everyone to feel welcomed, included, appreciated and valued as part of the Chamber and of the community.” The CCEDC congratulates Marlyn Linski Kissner as well as the other TOP 25 Women in Business award recipients on this distinguished honor. Spring In For Cheesecake Month Vidal Blanc wine, the pairing is $10. Tasting Room Manager Kathy Matson says, "We offered these cheesecakes one weekend during harvest of 2015 and they were a huge hit. Not one was left over." No tickets or reservations are required for the cheesecake and wine pairing. Matson adds, "On April 16, we will have an added treat; our local Relay for Life team will be here selling homemade cheesecake for $4 a slice to raise funds for the American Cancer Society. From 12 to 4 p.m. that day, the winery will donate $1 from every bottle of wine sold to the ACS." Submitted by KATHLEEN MATSON Who says wine doesn't pair with everything? Spring Into Action!
Start by cleaning up what Old Man Winter left behind!
Pick up sticks and debris that blew into your yard and rake all the leaves that blew against the house, etc. Rake your lawn. It’s important to rake away the thatch (excess grass clippings and build-up above the soil) to make way for new grass growth. Use a de-thatching rake, or if you don’t have a specialty rake, use a stiff-tined rake. Feed your lawn. A healthy lawn doesn’t live on water alone! A quality fertilization program is the way to go. Lawn mower or tractor ready, set…GO!. Check your mower’s manual for any maintenance that needs to be done. Make sure all the nuts and bolts are secure. Check spark plugs and change if they are showing wear and tear. Get your blades sharpened and inspect the oil. If the oil is low, old, or dirty, dispose of it properly and replace it with new oil. Miller Supply Ace Hardware’s Lawn & Garden Room is stocked with everything you need for a healthy, beautiful lawn. And don’t forget to drop off your mower blades EARLY for sharpening!

Positively Precious Puppies
National Puppy Day (March 23) is a brilliant thing—a celebration of all the little warm and fuzzies of the world, where social media explodes with throwback pictures of everyone’s pet pooch, where we all collectively acknowledge that there’s nothing better in life than snuggling a little ball of fur. The 2016 “holiday” yielded many a viral story as the internet delighted in liking, posting, and sharing allllll the puppies. One story in particular got some worldwide attention thanks to BuzzFeed—from all the way over in Mumbai, a 5-year-old lab named Iris got to share her 2014 “journey to motherhood” through some truly adorable pictures. Her owner, Shreya Shetty, said it was Iris’ “beauty and grace” that inspired the documentation. Iris gave birth to six healthy pups named Auro, Bruno, Cierra, Daniel, Edgar, and Fiona. Their family photo album has been shared over 10,000 times since being posted on Puppy Day. “I feel great knowing that these photographs and my baby’s story connected with people from all over the world at such a deep level,” Shreya told BuzzFeed. View the entire album at www.Facebook.com/PreciselyPicturesque. Editor’s Note: Puppies are impossibly cute, we can’t deny that—but, the importance of spaying/ neutering is not to be overshadowed. For every new puppy bred for photo shoots like this one, another homeless or unwanted animal winds up in a shelter (or worse). Please aim to adopt vs. shop and take a look at the rescue pets in every issue of the Gazette.

(610) 760-8888 Civil Air Patrol Says Goodbye To One Of Their Own Submitted by 1ST LT RUSANA KASRIEL, CAP On February 5, Civil Air Patrol suffered a painful loss. Major Elizabeth Ann (Wirth) Kliebscheidel passed away after a courageous battle with melanoma. A vivacious 30-year-old, Beth didn’t let this illness define her. On January 30, she was still teaching cadets of Civil Air Patrol Lehigh Valley Composite Squadron basic First Aid, CPR, and AUD as part of their search and rescue training. Beth was diagnosed with Stage III melanoma, shortly after her youngest son, Jameson, was born in 2012. After numerous surgeries and treatments, Beth started another round of chemotherapy in August 2015, but she stayed hopeful throughout the treatment. Her genuine love for people, her infectious attitude, and her heart of gold was apparent by all her outstanding accomplishments in her short life. Beth worked as an RN/CEN for Lehigh Valley Health Network and a Pre-Hospital Registered Nurse for Cetronia Ambulance Corps. She also spent time as a firefighter for Greenwalds Fire Company, and as a member of the Lehigh County Special Operations Team. Maj. Klibscheidel spent over 20 years as a member of the Civil Air Patrol, an auxiliary of the United States Air Force. As she put it herself,“Civil Air Patrol has been a passion of mine since I was a
child. I watched both my parents participate, and I simply could not wait to join.” As a cadet, Elizabeth served on numerous positions within the Cadet Advisory Council and National Cadet Advisory Council for two years, the only cadet in Pennsylvania to achieve that distinction, as well as the Region and

Pennsylvania Wing Councils and Pennsylvania Wing Cadet of the Year. She had the opportunity to serve as the cadet assistant to the National Commander during the National Conference held in Philadelphia, PA. As a part the Civil Air Patrol International Air Cadet Exchange program she traveled to Canada and Sweden. At 15, she attended the Hawk Mountain Ranger School, the oldest running civilian Search and Rescue school in the nation, and was the youngest female to be awarded the Expert Ranger Award to date. As a senior member, Maj. KelibIscheidel worked primarily in Cadet Programs and Emergency Services. In her role as a Health Services Officer Assistant and as Emergency Services Training Assistant, she traveled to area squadrons to administer training in Emergency Services, First Aid, and CPR. Elizabeth was hand selected to represent Civil Air Patrol as a team member for an International Search and Rescue competition held in Canada and was awarded the Master Medic Award #22 in 2009. Elizabeth has also transformed the medical curriculum of Hawk Mountain Ranger School Wilderness First Aid training into a nine day Emergency Responder program. Beth leaves a legacy that will live on through her husband Mark and three beautiful children. She will always serve as an inspiration to the cadets of Civil Air Patrol of being everyday heroes like
her and to set and achieve high goals in CAP and in life. Civil Air Patrol, the longtime all-volunteer U.S. Air Force auxiliary, is the newest member of the Air Force’s Total Force, which consists of regular Air Force, Air National Guard and Air Force Reserve, along with Air Force retired military and civilian employees. CAP, in its Total Force role, operates a fleet of 550 aircraft and performs about 90 percent of continental U.S. inland search and rescue missions as tasked by the Air Force Rescue Coordination Center and is credited by the AFRCC with saving an average of 78 lives annually. Civil Air Patrol’s 56,000 members nationwide also perform homeland security, disaster relief and drug interdiction missions at the request of federal, state and local agencies. Its members additionally play a leading role in aerospace education and serve as mentors to more than 24,000 young people currently participating in the CAP cadet program. Performing missions for America for the past 75 years, CAP received the Congressional Gold Medal in 2014 in honor of the heroic efforts of its World War II veterans. CAP also participates in Wreaths Across America, an initiative to remember, honor and teach about the sacrifices of U.S. military veterans. Visit www. capvolunteernow.com for more information.

Touch of Dutch Continued from Page 38 the old chain bridge here. A stranger may indeed laugh loudly at his first glance, When he comes unexpectedly on his journey to the chain bridge. So funny is she set down, yes, so odd she appears; Looks certainly like a wagon bridge, also something like a house. She is known both far and near as the Lehigh chain bridge. All the weight rest on chains instead of two wire-ropes [cables]. My, what heavy timber was needed to construct this bridge, That one could safely guide many tons of weight up and over on it. The piers, my, how solid they were made by good old masons; I believe the stone work may certainly still last for a hundred year period. Where are the working people now who gave their energy to [build] it? Mother earth long covers them in soft and sweet rest. With diligence they have certainly worked and through the heat of day; This made tired limbs and their bodies moist with sweat. The contractors for this bridge [are] also certainly known far and wide, Have already taken leave for a nicer, better land long ago. O chain bridge, o chain bridge, built so long back in time, In the entire Lehigh Valley you are the oldest bridge. O, if only you could speak with a mouth or with a pen, What you could not tell about floods, lightning and terrible weather. Downstream many bridges had spanned the full length of the river; They are all torn down now and others raised up. And you still stand so magnificently here in this old glade, And carry the people back and forth onto the other side.
Page 39
O chain bridge, o chain bridge how often I succeeded As a youngster I ran boldly and quickly on the dilapidated planks; O my, it made more fun and more great joy for me To run quickly in the lively wind over onto the other side. O chain bridge, o chain bridge, long have you stood here; And for stockholders year after year many pennies taken in. That year that the bridge was completely finished, is eighteen hundred and thirty; So for all the time for eighty years you were complete and hard working. O chain bridge, you old hero, old fashioned structure, You look just like a refuge in the time of the great deluge. We want to keep you long, yes, give us your service; That our grandchildren can see you, I have often wished.
[A timeline on this bridge: 1826, Bridge built (The poem says,1830, however.); 1841, Flood damage; 1857, Ice damage; 1886, Dam gave way; 1910, (Approximately) William Craig wrote this poem; 1926, On May24, fire burned one ‘towerhouse’; rebuilt without ‘tower-houses’; 1933, dismantled.]

Ageism is Alive and Well in TV Land’s ‘Younger’ Campaign I first mentioned my affection for this show back in July, as part of my Current Obsessions: Summer TV, Vol. 1 collection. I readily jumped back into season 2 a couple months ago, prepared for more of the same millennial-specific jargon and character foibles. Instead, I found myself taking a hard look at why this show is doing so well with a plot so, well, sad. “Nobody at work knows this, but ... I’m not 26. I’m 40.” What’s old is new again over at TV Land and not just in their relentlessly lauded new program “Younger.” The network officially announced its rebranding last summer, rolling out fresh original series aimed, they say, at Generation X. They marked the launch with the Darren Star dramedy, which tells a parallel story of revamping image for professional gain. When Liza Miller (Sutton Foster ) attempts to re-enter the work force after taking a 15-year hiatus to raise her child, she’s abruptly faced with the harsh reality of today’s job market―you’re either too young and therefore inexperienced or too old and therefore overqualified. While it’s highly unlikely that this particular plot would be feasible in reality (social security numbers are a thing, people), it does beg the question: To what lengths are people willing to go to find work that’s meaningful to them? Liza Miller, fictional as she may be, probably could’ve found employment somewhere at age 40, but she has her heart set on returning to an industry she loves.
In a highly competitive market, especially found within publishing/media, would she have managed to convince a company to let her start “anywhere,” even if that meant being the only assistant not straight out of college? Where is the happy medium between inexperienced and overqualified? Does it even exist anymore? Liza’s secret doesn’t get any easier to protect in the show’s sophomore season, which concluded March 23, but the burden she bears begins to weigh her down. In a trip to a psychologist in episode 2.08 to prove precisely why Millennial Print, Empirical’s latest venture, is the right outlet for the doc’s next book, Liza spills all. Her situation (“lie,” corrects Dr. Wray) makes her the perfect person to market a guide to your 20s because she’s already survived the era―and voluntarily gone back for more. “I utterly admire you. It’s a completely ludicrous idea and you are pulling it off,” says Dr. Wray. While that may be true, it’s a bit shortsighted to believe that her victory should exist only in deceiving everyone close to her, from her new friends to her own daughter.
townandcountrygazette.com | April 7, 2016
Plus, Liza may be back in publishing, but not in her field of choice (she prefers editorial over marketing, which is understandable when you’re still not sure what a hashtag is) and she also lives in constant fear that she’ll slip up and be found out (which is possible when you drop Punky Brewster references into casual conversation with actual 26-yearolds). Beneath all the thinly veiled attempts to be oh-so-relevant (every single commercial break is preempted with plugs for practically every social media platform), the show is rife with uncomfortable yet completely justifiable
Page 41
questions about personal and societal ethics. Lying about one’s age is a concept perceived to be so common, it’s inconsequential, particularly for women―but the show wastes many an opportunity to linger on why. With the potential to be an intense look at social norms disguised as fast-paced fun, the chief thrill remains only in discovering the next person to learn Liza’s truth. Truth is, there’s a bigger story to be told here.

Cooking with CAT
Crème Brulee
Recipe courtesy of Buzzfeed.com’s Tasty vertical.
INGREDIENTS
• 4 cups heavy cream • 2 tsp vanilla extract • 6 egg yolks • 1 cup sugar—½ cup in mixture and ½ cup for crust
DIRECTIONS
Heat heavy cream and vanilla extract in a saucepan until hot, but not boiling. In a medium bowl, whisk egg yolks and ½ cup sugar until well mixed. Pour in the hot cream gradually, mixing continually. Place 6 (7 to 8 oz.) ramekins into a large roasting pan. Pour hot water into the pan to come roughly halfway up the sides of the ramekins. Pour the mixture into the ramekins and bake at 325° for 45-50 minutes. The crème brulee should be set, but still a little jiggly in the middle. Remove the dishes from the roasting pan, allow to cool to room temperature, cover with plastic wrap and refrigerate for at least two hours and up to three days. After allotted refrigeration, remove crème brulee and allow to sit out at least 30 minutes before browning the sugar on top. Spread sugar on top of
each dish. Using a torch, melt the sugar for a crispy top. If you don’t have a torch, you can broil the crème brulee to melt the sugar. Allow to sit for at least five minutes before serving. Being one of my favorite desserts, I was very excited to find a nice, simple recipe to make crème brulee. It was extremely easy and I love that there are only four ingredients in the whole dish. I would say that as far as this recipe goes, the flavor of the crème brulee was perfect. I was so excited for the results and very antsy to use the torch that I did not bake the crème brulee or let it refrigerate long enough before trying. However, it was still delicious and I would recommend this recipe to any crème brulee lover out there!
