From The Editor’s Desk. I know people hate to see summer coming to a close but I’m looking forward to cooler Fall temperatures, fair season and my favorite holiday, Halloween, coming up in the next few months. With the end of summer comes the beginning of the school year for kids all around our area. You’re holding our annual “Back to School” issues in your hands with some great tips on easing the transition from summer fun to the school year.

In this issue we also have some photography from the Carbon County Fair, where the Gazette staff had a booth set up. It was a beautiful weekend and I personally enjoyed blowing my diet and binging on all the awesome fair food. It was great meeting Gazette readers from around the area and other vendors at the event, especially Marj and Joe from Cruise One whom we were sharing the Carbon Chamber tent with. The response from last issue’s Good Eye was overwhelming! I guess we made it a bit too easy but it’s always good to hear from readers with plenty of them signing up for the Town & Country Gazette E-Newsletter that is currently in progress. Thanks to Paul from Danielsville for pointing out a mistake in my last movie run-down: “Classic Car Movies.” Steve McQueen’s detective was in pursuit of a 1968 Dodge Charger R/T 440 during the iconic chase sequence in the movie Bullitt, not a ’70 Dodge Charger as I had written. Good eye Paul, I hope you enjoyed the rest of the article! Well, I hope everyone enjoys this issue and the rest of the summer! If anyone has any comments about current features in the Gazette or suggestions for the future feel free to shoot an e-mail my way at jkorba@townandcountrygazette.com.

Palmerton Camera Club The Palmerton Camera Club will start their year with a presentation from Mark Friedman who will share some of his photographs and explain the cibachrome process that he uses to get outstanding images. Mark began his career in photography while serving as an Army dentist in the Far East. He uses Canon equipment, and yes, he shoots film. Much effort is expended in his attempt to produce luminous prints with the greatest degree of clarity, brilliance and color saturation. Mark strongly believes in the intrinsic merit of traditionally made photographic prints. None of his prints have been digitally produced or altered in any way.
Mark’s prints have been seen throughout the DelawareValley both in competitions and his many Cibachrome Print Appreciation Programs. In 1991, the Puerto Vallarto Print “White Water” won Best of Show, Color Division in the Wilmington International Exhibition of Photography. The meeting will start with a short how-to lesson, followed by Mr. Friedman, and finish with light refreshments. Camera Club members are always willing to help beginners improve their skills. So if you’re looking for photographic advice, this is the group for you. This meeting is free and open to the public. Thursday, Sept. 22 at 7:30 PM in Holy Trinity Lutheran Church, 5th & Lafayette, Palmerton. Call 610-826-7285 for more information or visit our website at www. palmertoncameraclub.squarespace.com.
On Our Cover: St. Paul's Schoolhouse, which is a one-room schoolhouse, was built in l865 to educate local children. Children from grades one through eight were taught there. It was closed in 1951 and then used for Christian education purposes by the Church. Beginning in 2002, the Lehigh Township Historical Society leased the building and used it as a temporary museum for several years until the Historical Centre in Pennsville was built. In 2007, by an agreement with St. Paul's UCC of Indianland and the Lehigh Township Historical Society, the society became responsible for the restoration of the building and upkeep. The society restored the building to represent a school as it might have appeared years ago. There were 21 schoolhouses in Lehigh Township and St. Paul's Schoolhouse is the only remaining schoolhouse in the township that is not privately owned. It is now open to the public as a museum on special occasions and by appointment. -Submitted by Beverly Putt. Photography by Alice Wanamaker

Carbon County Fair The 12th annual Carbon County fair was kicked off last Wednesday evening a the fairgrounds on Little Gap Road in Palmerton. The fair is presented by the Lions and Lioness groups of Bowmanstown, Parryville, Franklin Township, Lehighton, Mahoning, Palmerton, West Penn and Jim Thorpe. The fair showcases and benefits the youth and residents in Carbon County and funds generated through the fair are used to assist in community projects. Wednesday opening celebrations including crowing of the 2011 Fair Queen and a Fireworks Spectacular. The fair which ran from the 10th to the 14th features tons of exhibitors, crafters, vendors, food vendors, music, rides games and so much more. Unique chickens like the one pictured, cows, pigs and goats filled the fairgrounds. Many fairgoers enjoyed the tractor lineup including John Deere and other well-known tractors. Also on display were hit and miss engines from the good ole’ days. The entertainment, including live music, professional wrestling, antique trailer pulls, pony rides, circus show, chainsaw carvings and demolition derbies packed in the crowds and delivered a great time for all who attended!
The 2011 Carbon County Fair Queen was announced Wednesday night. Miss Kalyn Lehr of Lehighton was crowned as this years Fair Queen. Kalyn will be a senior this year at Palmerton High School. She sings in the school chorus and plays the saxophone and flute in the school band. As part of her crowning, Kalyn received $250 prize money which she plans to put towards books for college. Kalyn hopes to attend Millersville University in the fall of 2012 to study Music Education. She is the daughter of Linda and William Lehr. When asked what her favorite part of the Carbon County Fair is, Kalyn admittedly had a hard time deciding; “it’s a tie between the animals and the food” she said. She did note however that the deep fried snickers were amazing! Maura Kelly, 16 of Weatherly was crowned the 1st runner up and received $100 prize money. Maura is the daughter of Pat and Kevin Kelly. She is a dancer a flute player and community volunteer. Despite the rain, the 12th annual Carbon County Fair was a huge success! Photos by Thomas Reed

School-Time Cool (NAPS)—Come fall, students everywhere want to start the new school year off on the right foot… and that means looking their best. While kids seek out the hottest trends in clothing, shoes and accessories, parents hunt for the best deals. The good news is that there is a way for both parents and kids to get what they want out of back-toschool shopping. At off-price retailers like Marshalls and T.J.Maxx, kids will find the most sought-after trends and designers, and parents will love that they’re all up to 60 percent off department and mall store prices. Check out the style guide below for backto-school cool: Girls: Lightweight sweaters top this year’s musthave list. Whether it’s a cable-knit sweater dress or thick vests with toggle closures, sweaters are a staple for the year. Varied sleeves—long, short and dolman—keep things interesting, and details
like stripes, bright colors, hoods and belts add uniqueness to each look. Pair sweaters with the season’s hottest denim: bootlegs and skinny styles in dark washes and with pocket detailing. Girls are putting their best foot forward in ballet flats, boots and Mary Janes. Sequined handbags, bright floral print backpacks and animal print shoulder bags top the list of must-have accessories for any school day. Boys: This fall, boys are showing their sportier side. It’s all about activewear, and boys will be rocking performance tops, shorts and pants by the coolest brands that will take them from the classroom to the playground. He’ll also find tees and sweatshirts from his favorite local sports team to show off his pride. Vintage screen print tops and dark denim with whiskering and pocket details give him a more stylish look. For footwear, boys will wear athletic styles and skate shoes in bright, solid colors. Teens: For teenage fashionistas, stylish knits rule in tops and dresses this year, and from wide dolman sleeves to voluminous ponchos, bigger is better. Chambray fabrics and floral and plaid prints make their way back to class in dresses and rompers that add a touch of sophistication for the high school set. Graphic tees, lightweight hoodies and shorts are must-haves for teen boys. Whether hanging at home or in homeroom, these versatile basics are comfortable, durable and on-trend. This season’s top trends can keep every student stylish.
Happy Birthday!

As part of the Lehigh Township Historical Society's tenth year celebration, an Ice Cream Social and St. Paul's Schoolhouse tours were held on July 30. This event was free to the public and was well-attended. Lee Haas of Slatedale was the special speaker and he gave a presentation about the PA German culture and heritage. He included some of his "special stories" and talked a little in the Pennsylvania Dutch dialect. Lee, being Haaptman (president) of Grundsau Lodge No. 6 in Monroe County, talked about the Grundsow organization and explained why February 2 was chosen for Groundhog Day. The Pennsylvania German flag was shown and explained. He stated, "This flag is flown at the Lehigh County courthouse every October for Pennsylvania German Day." Secretary Beverly Putt presented Lee with a Certificate of Appreciation and thanked everyone for attending the event. Following the presentation, refreshments, which included ice cream, were served. Tours of the St. Paul's Schoolhouse were available throughout the day and there was even transportation for those who had difficulty walking from the church to the schoolhouse. The society will be participating in the upcoming Lehigh Township Country Fair and will also open the historical centre in Pennsville from 6 to 9 p.m. on August 26 and 27. Please stop by the historical society's stand during the fair and learn more about the historical society. Also, visit the historical centre and learn more about days gone by in Lehigh Township. Admission is free but donations will be accepted. We thank everyone for their donations and we appreciate the encouragement and extra helping hands. We thank everyone who continue to support our events and those who helped to make our recent venture a success.

Lehigh Township Historical Society August, already! It's been a hot summer! If you have not had an opportunity to visit the historical centre and learn about all of the memorabilia and photographs there, take a break from the heat and visit our air-conditioned building. Spend some time inside the centre on a Sunday afternoon; you will be impressed with all of the items stored there. Recent donations include an old soda dispensing machine, radio/phonograph and a butcher's weighing scale. Do any of you remember when you could get a soda from a machine for 10 cents? When you visit, you will see the soda machine which has the name, Royal Crown, on the front of it and the money slot for a dime or two nickels. In August, we will be open from 1 to 4 p.m. on the 14th and the 28th and members will be on hand to answer any questions you may have. Remember, everything is on one level and admission is free! The historical centre will also be open during the Country Fair on August 26 and 27 from 6 to 9 p.m. After you visit the fair, drive to Pennsville and browse leisurely through the building. In addition, the society has reserved an area at the fair. Visit their stand to see historic items which will be for sale and receive information about the society. You are welcome to sign up as a new member. We appreciate your support! For more information, please call 610-767-5989.

Pumpernickel Bill (William Troxell) was the father of all the Dutch newspaper article writers, because he wrote longer than anyone else in this field. It’s our wish that he gets his name written in that big heavenly book in Dutch. On last Sunday evening, we were in the largest city of the U S, New York. Two days before we were in the largest city of Canada, Toronto. For people like us, who live in a small town, something like that is a big pleasure. The big bridges, the skyways, the tall buildings and the crowds of people were all an eye opening experience. On last Sunday evening, we were in Madison Square Garden to see and hear Billy Graham. Anyone may think as they will, but for our opinion, so far we have not heard a preacher that comes close Continued on Page 23

Touch of Dutch Continued from Page 22 to him. He does directly what it takes to make a sermon powerful and that is to speak straight out what he thinks. He does not care on whose toes he steps. (In Dutch we step on feet; in English we step on toes – translator.) Our opinion is that if a pastor does not step on any toes, then his sermon is not worth much. A week before we were in a little Mennonite church in Canada. That was a special experience for us, because the church, or as they say “meetinghouse”, (and the people also,) was different than our churches around here. The people all came by horse and buggy, the whole family, and they were dressed a little differently than us. The men with big black hats, the women in shawls and bonnets, black stockings and plain dresses. The church was also very plain; no organ or piano, no stained glass windows, no choir and a simple pulpit. There were about five men sitting behind the pulpit, who all had something to say; one preached about a half hour and another for about three quarters of an hour. The whole service lasted about two and a half hours and was held at 9:00 Standard Time. The men hung their hats on wooden pegs in the church (that was a picture that we will never forget), and the women hung their bonnets and shawls on pegs in the hallway. The men entered the church through one doorway, the women through another and the young boys through another, and each group had their own place to sit in the church. Even the young women and the older women were seperated. But we must not forget that they all serve and worship the same God, whether it’s in Madison Square Garden or in a little Mennonite church.

Red Light Skin Rejuvenation… What is it?! What does it do?! A lot of salons are starting to offer a new service and many people don’t understand what it is but are too afraid or busy to ask. The service I am referring to is “Red Light Skin Rejuvenation Sessions”, so let’s go over the who, what, when and where of this new “Red Light”! Red Light Skin Rejuvenation was developed by NASA and the Mayo Clinic. It is a light that emits light at the 633nm part of the light spectrum. This red part of the light spectrum has been shown to increase collagen and elastin fibers in your skin through many research studies. Now all that sounds technical and wonderful you’re thinking but you want to know how this “red light” is ever going to help me?! Well the answer to that is this… by building collagen and elastin fibers in your skin, you reduce overall signs of aging in skin, you also reduce fine lines, wrinkles, stretch marks and scars of all kinds
and improve skin hydration and health. The red light also helps to generate cellular activity that helps brighten skin and helps deal with age spots and sun damage. There is NO UVA or UVB rays at all with this part of the light spectrum so there is no UV exposure. It can also help relax muscles and decrease wound healing time. So now when you see “Red Light Skin Rejuvenation” offered somewhere you can take advantage of its wonderful properties for your skin health… the only downside to this treatment is that it does not get rid of cellulite tool. Laura Stauffer is the owner of Aloha Salon and Spa in Walnutport bringing 5 years make up styling and 4 years salon experience to our readers. You can contact her by emailing laura@alohatanning.net or visiting her website at www.alohatanning.net.

Apple
Pit Bull Terrier: An adoptable dog in Bethlehem, PA Medium • Adult • Female An Apple A Day........ Apple has a sad history, but thats the past! The truth is, she was picked up as a stray, she was very scared, and then the police used a taser on her. She was brought in to the local shelter, and she did not do well there. Loud noises and the chaotic structure made her very nervous. Of course no one came looking for her, she was stuck. A local training facility offered to help out. They take a couple of dogs from surrounding shelters and put them through their training program. Apple loved this! She needs to outlet her energy in some way, and this was perfect. The bad part? She sat at the training facility for 2 years! No one came to spend time with her, and no one came to adopt her. Sunrays stepped in once we met her we knew why the training facility was so in love. She is such a happy girl, so willing and eager to please. Black And Tan Coonhound/ Rottweiler Mix: An adoptable dog in Whitehall, PA Medium • Adult • Female Karly came to our shelter in horrible condition as the people who had her were not taking care of her. Her skin was red and raw and most of her hair had fallen out. After a few weeks at the shelter and being given some meds from our vet, she is looking alot better, her skin is clearing up and her hair is coming back in. She seems to have hound in her, so the breeds listed here are just a best guess. She is a really sweet dog, who loves people and seems to get along with other dogs too. If anyone is looking to foster a sweet girl and help her get back to the beautiful dog we know she is, give us a call, or if you are looking Continued on Page 51

Completion Date of Gap Bridge Delayed
Rep. Julie Harhart would like all residents to know that the completion date of the bridge on Rte. 873, commonly referred to as the Gap Bridge has been pushed back to September 30. Originally the bridge was scheduled to be completed by August 31, however a delay in the production of the galvanized steel plates has pushed the date back.

Lehigh Township Historical Society Did you know? . . . The History of Elvin D. Newhart Store & Bakery in Treichlers, Pa In 1902, Elvin left his family's farm in Treichlers, at age 18, to become an apprentice baker in the shop of John Scheirer operating Bon Ton Bakery. He served in that role for seven years learning not only the baking craft, but also the sale of the bakery products, the operation of the adjacent grocery store, and the horse and wagon delivery service to the Cherryville-Danielsville-Berlinsville area and the Laurys-Rising Sun areas. When John Scheirer retired, Elvin purchased the business and operated it as Elvin D. Newhart Store & Bakery. In 1941, with the bake shop needing considerable equipment updating and World War II labor hard to find, Elvin began store sales and rural road delivery of Heimbach Bakery (Allentown) baked goods. Rural delivery was discontinued in 1955 by sale of the routes to the Topton Bakery. The grocery store was maintained through these many years by Stella (Bossard) Newhart, Elvin's wife, until it was sold to son, Dale, and his wife, Lillian, in 1961. They operated the store known as Newhart's Superette until 1973, when the last of their four children, Dennis, Nancy, Ronald and Donald, left for college.
Circa 1941
Circa 1960s
Now, to look at some of the details and special events of the business: The bakery products included regular white bread, rye, and whole wheat; Also, shoe-fly pies, cinnamon and pecan buns, donuts, crullers and cream puffs, and a variety of large cookies. At the point of takeover by Elvin, deliveries were made by two horse drawn wagons. That process continued to 1922 when Elvin bought his first two trucks -- a Reo and a Dodge. A one pound unsliced loaf of white bread sold for nine cents in 1933. The price was increased to ten cents when slicing started in 1938. All five children (Marjorie, Julian, Daniel, Dale, and Elaine) assisted with clerking in the store, and Daniel and Dale spent several summer periods as bakery helpers. Julian spent five years after his high school graduation in 1933 as a driver/ salesman of one of the two trucks. Stella made an extra contribution during the depression years by baking three-tiered wedding cakes, as ordered, and on a weekly basis, three times per week, baked fresh fruit pies for store sales. The bakery was operated on a six day a week basis by a head baker and a helper. Daily production of regular white bread averaged two hundred loaves per day. In November of 1948, a tragic fire destroyed the store and connected home, the idle bakery, and adjacent storage building. The destruction was total but the fire was controlled by three fire companies, avoiding the loss of neighboring homes, though each sustained some damage. The president of the Mauser Mill, Harry J. Lerch, lent the use of his summer home for Elvin and Stella to the spring of 1949. Construction of the new home and connected grocery store began in March of 1949, and the store was opened for business on July 4, 1949. Again, in 1961, after Elvin's death, the home and store was sold to Dale and Lillian, who operated Newhart's Superette until 1973. Written by Dale Newhart for the Lehigh Township Historical Society

Northern Lehigh School District News Kindergarten Orientation The Northern Lehigh School District, in conjunction with the Northern Lehigh PTO, will hold its annual Kindergarten Orientation on Tuesday, August 23 at Peters Elementary School. Kindergarten students and their parents are encouraged to attend. Parents will meet their child’s teacher, get an overview of the curriculum and activities, meet their classmates and experience their first school bus ride. The children will be instructed on safety and proper behavior when riding the bus. Attending the orientation encourages students to feel more comfortable about school and to ease not only their apprehension, but their parents’ concerns too. Parents of kindergarten students who have not yet received an invitation to the Kindergarten Orientation, should contact Peters Elementary School at 610-767-9827. Only students registered for kindergarten will receive invitations. Parents who have not yet registered eligible children should call Peters Elementary School as soon as possible to make arrangements for registration. Students must be five years old by September 1, 2011, to be eligible for entrance into kindergarten. For further information, contact Peters Elementary School at 610-767-9827.
High School to Host Freshman Orientation On Thursday, August 25, Northern Lehigh High School will hold a Freshman Orientation Day. The transition from Middle School to High School is often difficult for many students and the purpose of this day is to introduce the students to their new surroundings and prepare them for the final stages of their public education. During
the orientation day, students will be introduced to the entire high school administration and faculty, assigned lockers/combination locks, tour the building, and attend scheduled classes. Students will get to know the faculty as they work together to complete a Northern Lehigh Scramble activity. Also, the administration will provide the students with pertinent information regarding school policies, rules, and procedures. The orientation will last the entire school day (7:11 am- 2:06 pm) except for students scheduled to attend Lehigh Career and Technical Institute, who will be dismissed after lunch at 12:30 pm. Bus transportation will be available to and from students’ regular bus stops and a free lunch will be provided. Parents should make every effort to ensure that their child attends this important day. Any questions should be directed to Mr. Robert Vlasaty, Principal, Northern Lehigh High School or Mr. Jonathan DeFrain, Ninth Grade Transitions coordinator. Please call 610-767-9832 if you have any questions of concerns.

"If there are any idiots in the room, will they please stand up" said the sarcastic teacher. After a long silence, one freshman rose to his feet. "Now then mister, why do you consider yourself an idiot?" enquired the teacher
with a sneer. "Well, actually I don't," said the student, "but I hate to see you standing up there all by yourself."
The children were lined up in the cafeteria of a Catholic elementary school for lunch. At the head of the table was a large pile of apples. The nun made a note, and posted on the apple tray: "Take only ONE. God is watching." Moving further along the lunch line, at the other end of the table was a large pile of chocolate chip cookies. A child had written a note, "Take all you want. God is watching the apples."

Recipe Round-Up After we printed our recipe for coffee-can ice cream last month a reader contacted us about the amount of sugar the recipe called for - an absolute wall-bouncing, out-of-control, rampage inducing one cup of sugar to one cup of milk. Although our reader is right about that being a colossal amount of sugar, we checked the recipe with several sources and it is correct. The coffee can ice cream method does call for lots of sugar. Remember, you can always reduce what you use to control the bouncing! As children of all ages head back to school and fall schedules keep families busy until dinner time, it is important to remember an after school snack to keep your children going. Follow this recipe to help keep after school snacks simple and healthy!
Home-made Trail Mix INGREDIENTS 1/4 cup whole shelled (unpeeled) almonds 1/4 cup unsalted dry-roasted peanuts 1/4 cup dried cranberries 1/4 cup chopped pitted dates 2 ounce dried apricots, or other dried fruit
Directions: Combine almonds, peanuts, cranberries, dates and apricots (or other fruit) in a medium bowl. Serve in small cups or plastic baggies for an easy on the go snack! (stores for 2 weeks at room temp.)

Fall Fest Mark your calendar for Saturday, October 8th from 10am to 2pm, 218 Wagner St, Lehighton and come out to Fall Fest 2011 at the People’s EC Church. There will be free child-safety fingerprinting (inkless so no mess) and great food and crafters and other vendors so you can begin your holiday shopping early. This event benefits the church’s short-term missionaries, youth campers and the building fund. The youth will be selling tasty menu items. Each year the youth of People’s EC make a short-term mission trip and this helps them raise the funds to take that trip. They have just returned for Newark, NY where they helped to refurbish a nursing home and hospital, assisted with day care for the children of migrant workers, helped to build and refurbish a hospice center for children with terminal cancer and also assisted disabled families to make their homes handicapped accessible. The youth range between 13 and 18 years old and have a true passion to help others and rely heavily on these fundraisers to ensure they can complete a mission every summer. Please plan to attend and enjoy the great products, crafts and food being offered.

What’s in Your Beach Bag? Blood Prophecy Author: Stefan Petrucha In Blood Prophecy Stefan Petrucha succeeds in taking the vampire genre and turning it right onto its head, with this tale of a bloodsucker with a conscience. For Jeremiah Fall, former Puritan and settler in an early American colony in the 1600s, may indeed have been bitten and cursed with an eternal thirst for human blood, but he is far from ready to cede to this ungodly temptation. Blessed though he is with heightened powers, unmatched strength and the double edged knife that is immortality, Fall nonetheless battles the beast within as he struggles to retain his essential humanity. Living exclusively off animal blood, Fall sets out in search of a cure for his affliction – an ancient stone of unmatched power ." I am the forgotten man’, goes an ancient, much adapted ditty that leads Fall onward . ” Unfinished by my maker’s hand. He left me when the world began, And would not tell me what I am.” Seeking this stone , and some explanation to what it is he has become, Fall finds himself in Egypt, a hundred and fifty years later, face to face with the evil being that began his ordeal. Yet greater evil lurks in the sands, and Fall is soon faced with the prospect of sacrificing himself, or rather, his humanity, to protect all of humankind. Along the way, he finds himself a faithful horse, and a friend- a Russian called Hylic Kirillov with a bizarre death fetish. His morbid leanings notwithstanding, Kirillov provides the few lighter moments in this otherwise grim adventure , making himself a cheery , if unwanted, Sancho Panzo to Fall’s taciturn Quixote. Fall also finds love, drawn to a mysterious woman called Amala with an uncanny ability to interpret the arcane writings Continued on Page 64

Make Your Home Learning-Friendly in Time for Back to School Leading virtual public school, Commonwealth Connections Academy, offers five easy tips to help support education in the home Students often dread the transition back to school after a summer of fun and relaxation. In an effort to ease this transition, educators at public cyber school Commonwealth Connections Academy (CCA) encourage families to make small changes in the home to provide an environment for learning. Experts in learning at home, Connections Academy educators suggest that organization (and fun) is key and offer the following easy-toimplement steps to help improve learning habits at home – for all students, whether they learn at home or in a traditional classroom. “Promoting learning within the household is important for all students, not just those who attend school from home like cyber school students,” said Jim Alex, Middle School Assistant Principal in CCA’s Lehighton teaching center. “A new school year provides an opportunity for a clean slate and a chance to begin positive new routines.” 1. Reduce clutter and get organized Stacks of workbooks and papers make studying appear as a daunting task. Help your child organize his or her learning materials and store them in a dedicated place such as a filing cabinet or paper folders – one for each subject. Consider pasting a chart on the inside front cover of the folders to (1) track the amount of time spent studying for each subject, and (2) note what chapters and assignments have been completed. This will organize your student’s educational materials within your home and document his or her learning accomplishments for the school year. 2. Monitor noise levels Whether your child is working independently or together with you, phones, televisions and outside noises distract children and pull them out of their studies – even if it is coming from another room. Be aware of when your child is studying and encourage family and visitors to avoid unnecessary interruptions, such as loud video games or conversations. Consider turning off or silencing electronic devices that can interfere with students’ concentration during study time. 3. Designate an “education space” Designate a room, or even a table, as your student’s learning space. Setting aside a specific
area of your home where studying takes place creates an environment conducive to learning, much like a working classroom atmosphere. You and your child will come to associate that space with productive study habits. 4. Create a routine Having a set time scheduled each day when learning or homework occurs creates good habits for you and your child. This also is important for other members of your family, so they can avoid creating distractions during study time. Do not allow yourself or your child to occasionally watch a favorite television show or go over to a friend’s house during this scheduled time. You must treat it as “study-only” time to reinforce the importance of the learning process.
5. Make learning enjoyable Showing interest in your child’s ideas and progress makes learning a positive process. Ask your child what materials or environment he or she needs to effectively learn and study within the home. Remember, learning at home doesn’t always have to be restricted to your residence – visiting a local science museum or taking in a play may be related to your child’s school work. It’s not too late to join Commonwealth Connections Academy. The first day of school is September 6th, for information about enrollment visit www.connectionsacademy.com/cca About Commonwealth Connections Academy Commonwealth Connections Academy combines the expertise and accountability of public education and state certified teachers, with strong parental involvement and the flexibility of technology-enhanced learning. Since CCA is a Pennsylvania public school, there are no costs for tuition, fees or supplies. CCA was named Educator of the Year at the 2011 Pennsylvania Technology Awards for the school’s dynamic use of their mobile classroom and the use of technologies to educate, motivate and inspire students to become lifelong learners. Open enrollment for grades K-12 is going on now. For more information, please visit www.connectionsacademy.com/cca.

Three Ways To Cope With Back-To-School Stress (NAPS)—For most parents, the start of a new school year can’t come soon enough. Sixty percent of moms and dads polled in a new Yahoo! Shine survey (Ipsos OTX MediaCT) say they are extremely excited for summer break to end. But ramping up for the first day of classes can be hectic and frustrating, as parents race to gather school supplies while watching their wallets. The pressure to buy trendy brands is as fierce as ever. Half of the parents surveyed said they buy their children “hip” or “trendy” brands to help them be more “popular” or “cool” at school. And families also say they are gearing up for a busy year of after-school activities. Three-quarters of the 2,001 adults surveyed say their children participate in at least two extracurricular activities. How can families enjoy a fresh start in the Fall while keeping the stress at bay? There are lots of ways technology can help parents manage spending and scheduling. Here are a few tips from Yahoo! Web Life Editor Heather Cabot: • Organize Your In-box. For starters, you can get a handle on electronic clutter in your in-box by making use of the new Yahoo! Mail service. The new mail format allows you to access the Web tools you use most without leaving your in-box. From tracking your back-to-school purchases with the All My Purchases App to instantly responding to Facebook messages and sending PTA meeting Evites, Yahoo! Mail is the hub for all your e-traffic and will help you earn “Supermom” status. • Get More Done With Apps. Instead of wasting time searching through a marketplace of hundreds of apps to find the best grocery list maker, calorie counter or comparison shopping tool, now you can take all the guesswork out of finding the apps you need most. Yahoo! AppSpot is a fast, easy way to discover new apps that are just right for you. Each day, you get daily picks based on the apps you already use and that are most important to you. For more information, visit appspot.yahoo.com.
• Don’t Miss Out On Deals. Don’t waste time surfing the entire Web for sales and promotions. Instead, let Yahoo! Deals do the coupon clipping for you. The deal website scours the Web to find coupons, sales and bargains to save you money. At deals.yahoo.com, visitors can find everything from cheap daily deals to codes for online coupons, free grocery coupons and printable local coupons for all their favorite stores and products. Plus, committed bargain hunters can sign up for deal newsletters from coupon sites, including RetailMeNot.com and FatWallet.com, for instant alerts on sales. According to Cabot, a little organization can go a long way when it comes to organizing your online life, finding bargains and reducing backto-school stress. Using the latest technology can help you manage the flow of electronic clutter in your inbox—and stay on top of the latest trends.
Speedway Children’s Charities Fundraiser The family of the late Robert "Butch" "Bobby" Eck is hosting a family Carnival to benefit the Speedway Children’s Charities in his memory. The event will take place on Sunday October 2 from 11 a.m. - ? at the canal pavilion. There will be a Chinese auction for children and adults, food, carnival games, a clown, and much more. Many local stock car racers will be on hand displaying their cars and offering pictures and autographs. Bring the children out for an opportunity to record their very own karaoke CD. Donations for the auction and raffles are being accepted. If you would like to donate and schedule a pick up, call 484-358-4291 or 484-358-4295. Volunteers are also needed.

Boy Scouts Celebrate Opening of the New Stillwater Lake Dam The new 350 foot dam on Stillwater Lake in Pocono Summit is complete and Scouts are enjoying the waterfront again at Camp Minsi. On Thursday July 21st, area legislators were hosted for lunch at Camp Minsi and participated in a ribbon cutting at the site of the new dam. Dam construction commenced in September 2010 as water in Stillwater Lake was drawn-down so that excavation could begin. Hampered by the harsh winter and wet spring, construction was finally completed in May 2011 in time for the lake to refill for summer activities. Completion of the dam construction brings this nearly 10-year effort to a successful conclusion, although additional fundraising is still needed to complete payment of the project. Stillwater Lake, approximately 320 acres, is a great Monroe County resource that is enjoyed by area residents and Scouts at Camp Minsi. Thanks go out to all the municipalities, organizations, legislators, public officials and individuals who helped with this important project.
Minsi Trails Council provides leadership and character development programs to nearly 12,000 Scout with 5,500 adult volunteers. The council serves young people throughout the Anthracite Region, Pocono Mountains and Lehigh Valley in Pennsylvania along with western New Jersey and serves six-counties: Lehigh, Northampton, Monroe, Carbon, Luzerne, and Warren counties. The local Scouting heritage dates back more than 100 years when the council’s first Scout troops were established in the Allentown and Easton areas. Help Your Youngsters Shine In School Let your kids know you recognize and value their efforts, not just their final accomplishments. 3. Set up a study area for your child. It should be quiet (no TV or video games), well ventilated, free of distractions (no phones or pets), well lit and equipped with all necessary supplies: pens, paper, markers, dictionary, thesaurus, calculator, computer. 4. Establish a consistent homework routine. Schedule daily homework time in your house so it becomes a part of your family’s routine. This also helps children to see that homework is a priority. 5. Get acquainted with your child’s teachers and keep the lines of communication open. Discuss goal setting with both your child and his or her teacher. This sort of partnership can be very effective in developing healthy homework habits. For further information, visit www.kumon.com or call (877) 586-6673. Setting young scholars on the path to success may be simpler than many parents realize.
(NAPS)—Parents don’t have to do their children’s homework to help them prepare for class. There arefive things you can do to help your youngsters have a successful school year, explains Dr. Mary Mokris, education specialist at Kumon Math and Reading Centers. 1. Focus on the positives. Talk to your children about their accomplishments and recognize the skills they used to be successful, such as perseverance, time management, responsibility and independence, all things that can help them in school. 2. Give your child genuine and frequent praise. Praise your children’s progress, not perfection. Let them know you believe in them, you think they’re special and you have confidence in them. 4571 CLOVER HILL CIRCLE SERVING THE GREATER LEHIGH VALLEY

Beach Bag Continued from Page 49 on the stone. Rest assured, though – Fall is no Cullen brother and Petrucha’s intentions are far removed from a saga about immortal love with humane vampires, especially when the future of humanity lies in the hands of his tortured hero. The pace of ‘Blood’ is unrelenting as it zips back and forth through Fall’s life; the language lush, and with a strongly visual feel - Petrucha is, after all, an acclaimed writer of comic books. He neatly weaves historical fact into the tapestry of this story; Fall, in a manner reminiscent of Forrest Gump (albeit an undead one with an aversion to sunlight), finds himself participating in historic battles across the ages – from the Crusades to Napoleon’s Battle of the Pyramids. Blood Prophecy ends on an intriguing premise, hinting at greater travails ahead for Fall and Hylic – a sequel I certainly look forward to. Reviewed by Lavanya Karthik of bookpleasures. com
