From the Editor’s Desk
Joe Korba
It’s always nice to see years of organizing culminate like we did this past week during Slatington’s sesquicentennial celebration. To quote one of the greatest minds of terrible ‘80s action shows, “I love it when a plan comes together.” Kristy, Annabel, and everyone else on the Slatington 150th committee did great work and the festivities went off without a hitch. I’m not a native, but since I started at the Gazette, the community spirit in the Northern Lehigh area has always impressed me. I’m proud of our paper’s small part in helping to keep all of you informed and maybe just a little more united. In the spirit of community togetherness, I want to let you all know that we still have a few vendor spots open for the Blue Mountain Blowout Flea Market to benefit the Northern Lehigh Food Bank. If you’re interested in participating on Sept. 6 from 9 a.m. until 2 p.m., give me a call at 610-767-9600. Even if you’re not participating, make sure to stop by, say hello, and support a great cause. BL UE MOUNTAIN

Guided Bike Ride
Submitted by NANCY THATCHER An early autumn leisurely bike ride will be held on Saturday, September 27 along part of the Delaware and Lehigh Rail Trail. Lehigh Township Rails to Trails will be leading the ride from the trailhead at Lehighton to the one in Slatington, a one-way distance of about nine miles. The ride will begin at 9 a.m. and end before noon. Do you know where Native Americans once mined flint? Can you identify invasive species? What diner was a favorite of rail passengers? Along the way, stops will be made to answer these questions and to discuss other local history and botany. Restrooms are available at the Slatington Trailhead, as are picnic tables and places to purchase food, if you do not want to bring your own snack or lunch. From Slatington, riders may bike back to Lehighton or continue to ride further along one of the following routes: A. the D & L towards the Cove Rd Trailhead, B. the Slate Heritage Trail towards Slatedale , or C. the Walnutport towpath to the picnic area at Lock 25. Although the ride is free, we ask that you register by September 20 by calling 610-767-0676 or by sending an email to ltr2t@hotmail.com.

Meet the Staff If
you could be invincible for a day, what would you do? Joe Korba, Associate Publisher: If I were invincible for a day, I’d probably just make all kinds of outlandish and dangerous bets, i.e. “I bet you $500 that I can give that black bear a noogie.” Tony Pisco, Art Director: I would take up mountain climbing, since if I fell, I wouldn’t get hurt. Tyler Trumbauer, Staff Writer: If I could be invincible for one day, I’d probably go confront a few individuals that gave me some problems over the last few years. I’m not stating that there would be physical confrontation, but knowing I’m invincible I’d go into a conversation with them with a totally different mindset that I would under normal settings. Danielle Tepper, Publishing Assistant: I’m a total thrillseeker, so I’d want to do it all. Bungee-jumping, skydiving, stormchasing; you name it, I’d do it. No risk? Sign me up! (I eventually want to do all these things anyway, so buy me a parachute for my next birthday.) Alice Wanamaker, Publishing Assistant: I’ve always wanted to go over Niagara Falls in a barrel. Invincibility would serve me well.
Donna Bachman, Accounting Manager: If it only lasted for one day, I would be sitting on a beach with my eyes closed appreciating everything I have accomplished and be thinking of everyone that touched my life in so many different ways.

Lehighton in the Schuylkill League:
Hardship or Harmony?
Lehighton Area School District shares Carbon County with Jim Thorpe, Weatherly area, Hazleton area, and Panther Valley School Districts. Now the Indians share more than geography with its neighbors. Lehighton is embarking on a new chapter in its athletic department with its first athletic contests as a new member of the Schuylkill League and Anthracite League for football just days away. They will be joining their aforementioned neighbors as well as 19 other schools competing in one of the only three leagues left in District 11, along with the Colonial League and the Eastern Pennsylvania Conference. The new home for Lehighton athletics will affect every sport differently, especially with the football team competing in the Anthracite Football League, which is known statewide for its

hard-nosed, smash-mouthed games. On the hardwood, boys’ basketball head coach Rich Oertner thinks it will affect his team slightly. “I believe it will and will not affect us,” he stated. “In the MVC, you had to be at your best to win any game. Each team was a 4A school and had plenty of athletic players. In the Schuylkill League, there are some teams that have many athletic players, but there are teams that are of a smaller school size and do not have the depth of a 4A school. In other words, the top notch teams in the Schuylkill League are very good, yet there are always going to be teams that you can compete with on the floor.” Oertner’s counterpart in the Indians’ gymnasium, Lehighton’s girls’ basketball coach Eric Gidney does not believe it will have any large impact on his team. Gidney and his girls are looking forward to the opportunities in the new league. “We played against a handful of the Schuylkill League teams last season and they were all very welcoming and looking forward to Lehighton joining the league," he said. "It is an honor to be in the Schuylkill League. It will be another new challenge for a girls’ basketball program at Lehighton that has faced numerous other challenges over recent years, but our entire program is looking forward to it.”

Lehighton knew it was the right decision for their athletic department and ended up turning down an invitation from the Colonial League this past year and stayed devoted to the Schuylkill League. The leader of Lehighton’s tribe on the diamond, Brian Polaha, states it doesn’t matter what league his baseball squad plays in, wins are wins. “There are good teams in the Mountain Valley Conference, and there are good teams in the Schuylkill League as well," he said. "You still have to play good baseball to get wins, no matter what league you are in.” Lehighton is excited for this new beginning and to face off against its neighboring districts. The Indians feel happy and right at home already, but they’d prefer to skip the new guy fruit baskets and go straight for the championship trophies.
Happy Birthday

Submitted by JULIE HAYDT The Slatington Fire Department #24, in conjunction with the Teamster Horsemen Motorcycle Association 53 North, will be hosting the 2nd Annual Bike Night and Car Show in honor of Milton "Bup" Greene on September 6. During his lifetime, Bup received great joy out of helping his community and believed strongly in community service. He was dedicated to Slatington in many ways, but most notably, he was a volunteer firefighter for over 30 years. He served as the Treasurer of the Firehouse for many years and enjoyed working at the Firehouse Carnival annually. He was also a member of Hose Company #1 where he was an active member of the Slatington Fireman Statue Cleaning Team and Restoration Committee. He also served on Borough Council. Following Bup’s unexpected death two years ago, his children approached the Slatington Fire Department and his motorcycle club (Teamster Horseman) with an idea to start an annual event to give back to the community, create funds to restore the Statue as needed, and to raise money for the Firehouse. The groups joined together and the rest is history. On the day of the event, Slatington’s Main Street will be closed from 2nd Street to South Street. There will be bands, a DJ, vendors, mug/drink specials, food, T-shirt sales, a kid zone, Chinese auction, and a car show. The car show will be from 12 to 4 p.m. and registration can be completed at the event upon your arrival. It is $10 per car entry. Trophies will be awarded for the “crowd favorites” and "family favorite" for the cars entered. This year, there will be a bike raffle, the winner can choose from a Harley Davidson Sportster Iron 883 or $5,000 cash. The proceeds of the event will benefit the Slatington Fire Department #24 and the Statue Restoration Fund through the Hose Company #1.

Bacon Cheese Manicotti
Cooking with
By CATHERINE STROH (Recipe courtesy of Foodnetwork.com)
Catherine
INGREDIENTS Manicotti •Vegetable oil cooking spray
•Kosher salt •1 tbsp olive oil •8 manicotti pasta tubes •9 slices applewood smoked bacon, cut into ½ inch pieces •10 oz. package frozen chopped spinach, thawed and drained •15 oz. container whole milk ricotta, room temp. •1/3 cup grated parm cheese, room temp. •1/4 tsp. freshly ground black pepper •1/4 tsp. ground nutmeg •1 large egg, room temp.
Sauce
•2/3 cup heavy whipping cream •1/3 cup whole milk •1 tbsp flour •¼ tsp kosher salt •1/8 tsp freshly ground pepper •2 large pinches ground nutmeg •1 ½ cup coarsely grated whole milk mozzarella •1 ½ cup jarred tomato basil sauce
and set aside to cool. In a large bowl, add the cooled bacon, the spinach, ricotta, parmesan, ½ teaspoon salt, the pepper, nutmeg, and egg. Stir until well combined. Using a small spoon, fill the manicotti tubes with the ricotta mixture. Bring the cream, milk, flour, salt, pepper, and nutmeg to a simmer in a heavy, medium saucepan over medium heat. Add the mozzarella in batches, constantly whisking, until the sauce is thick and smooth. Reduce the heat to low and simmer one minute, whisking occasionally. Whisk in the tomato basil sauce. Pour half of the sauce on the bottom of the prepared baking dish. Arrange the manicotti in a single layer on the sauce. Pour the remaining sauce on top of the manicotti and top with the mozzarella. Drizzle with olive oil and cover the dish with foil. Bake until heated through and bubbling, 20 to 25 minutes.
Note from Chef Cat: I sometimes feel overwhelmed if a recipe calls for too many ingredients or the directions are lengthy. This may be the case for this recipe, but it is extremely easy. The only substitutions I made were smoked cherrywood bacon and plain marinara sauce. (I just added in fresh basil—basil is the love of my life). Stuffing the manicotti became time consuming for me, but don’t get frustrated. Good luck and enjoy!
Friedens Fire Co. DIRECTIONS Preheat the oven to 375°F. Spray a 9-by-11 inch oval or rectangle baking dish with vegetable oil cooking spray. Bring a large pot of boiling salted water to a boil over medium-high heat. Add the oil and pasta. Cook until al dente, stirring occasionally, 5 to 7 minutes. Drain and cover with plastic wrap to prevent the pasta from drying out. In a large nonstick skillet, cook the bacon until crisp and brown, about 7 minutes. Drain on paper towels

Northern Lehigh High School To Host Freshman Orientation Day
Submitted by JONATHAN DEFRAIN On Thursday, August 21, Northern Lehigh High School will hold our annual Freshman Orientation Day. The transition from middle school to high school is often difficult for many students and the purpose of this day is to introduce the students to their new surroundings and prepare them for the final stages of their public education. This year, the orientation day will be a half-day in format. The day’s activities begin at 7:15 a.m. and last until 12
Page 19

Also, the administration will provide the students with pertinent information regarding school policies, rules, and procedures. Bus transportation will be available to and from students’ regular bus stops and a free lunch will be provided. Parents should make every effort to ensure that their child attends this important day. But what things we can get to rid ourselves of them now a day! Years back when I was a girl, one bought flypaper and laid it around. Later one bought those stringers and hung them from the ceiling. But what did people like Grammy do, before such things were available to buy in store? Grammy always made her own fly trap. This also took little money. She put soapy water in a glass. Then she cut a piece of paper a little larger than the glass and cut a little hole in its center. Then she smeared molasses on [what became] the bottom side and put it on the glass. The flies slipped through the hole to eat the molasses and fell in the soapy water and drowned. Grammy also had asparagus stalks in the yard. These were not cut off to eat, like people do today. She let it grow till it was very high in the summer. The stalks then look like ferns when one doesn’t cut them off for a year. When the flies become

bad in summer, she always cut off three or four asparagus sprouts and hung them behind picture frames in the parlor. Flies liked that stuff and sat themselves on them in stead of tormenting the people when they sat in the room on Sunday afternoon to read the family Bible and to look over the pictures in the [family] album on a table in the corner of the parlor. I still remember well how mom chased the flies out of the kitchen in summer. In the afternoon she pulled down the shades and left the kitchen door slightly ajar. Then she began to chase the flies with a fly swatter made of newspaper. When she didn’t have one of those fly swatters then she used a hand towel to chase them out, or took off her apron and used that to drive out the flies. Then we can say like the little boy,“Everything is very handy in our good world. One does not have to struggle no more unless he is not very bright.” [Perhaps Florence’s article provides a practical answer to that age old Dutch question, “Kannscht Micke fange?” (“Can you catch flies?”) Incidentally, do you know the classic answer to that question? “Wann sie hocke bleiwe, un wann ich hab en Schuppkarich fer sie fattfaahre.” (“When they remain seated and when I have a wheelbarrow to cart them away.”) ] -Larry Gradwohl

Magic For Dogs: Levitating Weiner Dog prankster Jose Ahonen is at it again. His first Magic For Dogs installment (which also appeared in the Gazette) featured a disappearing treat. His second featured a voice actor friend and was a hilarious look at how dogs respond to a human realistically barking. His third, uploaded about two weeks ago, takes a look at how hungry pooches react when their snack suddenly starts floating in front of them in “How Dogs React To Levitating Weiner.” The answer? Some don’t care if their food flies; it’s still food! Others backed off, not sure what they were seeing. As with the first, Jose reassures us that no matter their reaction, all the dogs finally received the hot dog at the end. Check it out at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9Db6JZHh0SA.

Junior Girl Scout Troop Earns Bronze Award
Submitted by RACHEL HORVATH Over the course of the 2013-14 scouting year, several girls from Junior Girl Scout troop #628 in Neffs spent over 20 hours each working on their Bronze award which is the highest award earned by a Junior Girl Scout. These girls took the time to investigate where their communities needed help, formed a plan, and then put that plan into action in order to help "make the world a better place." Under the direction of their leaders Linda Dean, Rachel Horvath and adult volunteer Charmain Brody, scouts Myah Brody, Shaiyan Feisal, Breanna Kemmerer, and Madison Dennington chose to volunteer in the Northern Lehigh Food Bank on Sunday afternoons. While there, they sorted produce, shelved non-perishable food items, and gained a greater appreciation for the importance of facilities such as the food bank, as well as the constant need for volunteers to help others in need. The girls also conducted their own
independent food collections for donation to the facility. Through their time at the food bank, each girl realized how rewarding volunteering can be and they had fun doing it. One additional scout, Hannah Horvath, wanted to focus her service project on helping homeless animals. After her family adopted a kitten from Peaceable Kingdom, she realized how organizations such as this relied heavily on donations of pet food and care items, money, and hands-on help. Hannah distributed over 200 flyers in her neighborhood explaining her project and later collected over 170 items for donation. She also hosted a lemonade stand which, along with monetary donations collected from neighbors, she was able to donate over $50 to the shelter. Each of these girls will be presented with their Bronze award this summer for recognition of their dedication to their communities and those in need.

A Celebration of Life for Tyler M. Kohler August 7, 2004 – August 7, 2014 On this day, it was 10 years since his passing. Tyler’s family and friends gathered at Indianland Cemetery to celebrate his 17 years spent here on Earth. As family and friends shared funny stories and wonderful memories, there were laughs and there were tears. Each guest was given a memory card to write a message to Tyler and attach it to their balloon for the “Celebration Balloon Release.” The song “I Can Only Imagine” played as the balloons were released and family and friends watched the balloons make their way up to Heaven. Memory stones were passed out to everyone for a memorable reminder of Tyler and who he was. Tyler’s family would like to sincerely thank everyone who came out and participated in this heartfelt and most meaningful celebration.

Don’t Be Shy with your Doctor about Embarrassing Gastrointestinal Symptoms (StatePoint) The most uncomfortable afflictions are often the most embarrassing. And anorectal health issues can interfere with almost everything one does, from sitting on a bus to enjoying a meal out with friends. If you suffer from an uncomfortable and at times, painful condition like hemorrhoids, you’re not alone. In fact, millions of Americans -particularly those between the ages of 20 and 50 -are affected by hemorrhoids. Additionally, other anorectal disorders can have similar symptoms.
1994
So ditch the embarrassment and use this knowledge to feel empowered to discuss your issue with your doctor. He or she can diagnose the issue properly and offer you tips for relief. In the meantime, here are a few things you can do to address the problem on your own. • Change your exercise routine: While regular physical activity can improve your cardiovascular health and help you to maintain a healthy weight, certain types of activities can cause hemorrhoids. Straining from weight lifting, for instance, may cause the veins near the anus and rectum to become swollen, eventually leading to this condition. Cycling may also exacerbate the issue. Talk to your doctor about exercises that are safe for you. • Don’t rush in the bathroom: Rushing and pushing can cause excessive straining and increase pressure on rectal veins. When you are done, don’t linger. Sitting on the toilet longer than necessary can aggravate your discomfort. • Lose weight: Excess weight in your abdomen can increase your chances of developing hemorrhoids. • Seek relief: You don’t necessarily need a prescription to relieve the pain, itching and burning associated with hemorrhoids and other

anorectal disorders. If your doctor confirms you have hemorrhoids, look for an over-the-counter topical, local anesthetic at your drugstore, such as RectiCare Anorectal Cream, which contains the highest lidocaine strength available without a prescription. It works quickly to help soothe discomfort. In addition, each tube comes with a supply of “finger cots,” little covers that fit over the finger, to promote hygienic application. Visit www.RectiCare.com for more information. • New diet: If your hemorrhoids are caused by constipation, try adding more fiber to your diet to get to the root of the problem. And remember to drink plenty of water alongside any meal. Whether you’re walking down the drugstore aisle or talking with your doctor, seek the relief you need without embarrassment. MEMORIAL
In Loving Memory of Howard E Strohl 4/7/26 – 8/18/23 The chairs where you sat are empty, Our ears yearn to hear your voice; To say goodbye was not our choice. It was hard to let you go, Even though our faith is oh so strong; Every day it's for memories of you we long. Stories you loved to tell, Are remembered as easily as the love you shared; A love that reached out because you so deeply cared. We have been blessed to have you in our lives, And you have made this world a better place; Rest in peace dear man and again some day we will see you face to face. Written by Daughter Linda Strohl-Sidor and wife Kathryn (8/19)
