Spay and Neuter Your Pets!
Good for You, Your Pet, and the Community Prevent A Litter - It’s Good for You • Spayed and neutered pets are better, more affectionate, companions. • Neutered cats are less likely to spray and mark territory. • Spaying a female dog or cat eliminates its heat cycle, which can last twenty-one days, twice a year, in dogs, and anywhere from three to fifteen days, three or more times a year, in cats. Females in heat often cry incessantly, show nervous behavior, and attract unwanted male animals. • Spayed and neutered pets are less likely to bite. Unaltered animals often exhibit more behavior and temperament problems than those that have been spayed or neutered. Prevent a Litter - It's Good for Your Pet Spayed and neutered dogs and cats live longer, healthier lives. Spaying female dogs and cats eliminates the possibility of uterine or ovarian cancer and greatly reduces the incidence of breast cancer. Neutering male dogs and cats reduces the
incidence of prostate cancer. Neutered animals are less likely to roam and fight. Prevent A Litter - It's Good for the Community Communities spend millions of dollars to control and eliminate unwanted animals. Irresponsible breeding contributes to the problem of dog bites and attacks. Animal shelters are overburdened with surplus animals. Health Benefits of Spaying and Neutering Spayed animals no longer feel the need to roam to look for a mate. The result is that they stay home and have less chance of being involved in traumatic accidents such as being hit by a car. They also have a much lower incidence of contracting contagious diseases, and get into fewer fights. In males, neutering decreases the chances of developing prostatic disease and hernias, and eliminates the chances of developing testicular cancer. It also reduces problems with territorial and

sexual aggression, inappropriate urination (spraying) and other undesirable male behaviors. In Females, spaying decreases the incidence of breast cancer (the rate goes down to almost zero if the spaying is done before the first heat cycle!). It eliminates the chance of developing a serious and potentially fatal infection of the uterus experienced by many mature unspayed animals (pyometra). Spay surgery also eliminates the heat cycle and associated mood swings and undesirable behaviors, messy spotting (in dogs) and the attraction of all available males to your yard. Five Good Reasons Why You Should Spay or Neuter Your Pet 1) Spaying or neutering increases your pet's chances for a longer, healthier life. • Spaying your pet before her first estrous cycle (that is, before she reaches sexual maturity) greatly reduces her chances of developing breast cancer and completely eliminates the threat of uterine and ovarian cancer and uterine infection, which are common occurrences in unaltered females. Neutering your male dog or cat prevents testicular tumors and may prevent prostate problems. Neutering also decreases the possibility of perianal tumors and hernias, which are commonly observed in older, unaltered dogs. Because neutered cats are less likely to roam, the threat of abscesses caused
by bites and diseases transmitted by fighting are greatly reduced. 2) An altered dog or cat is a better pet for your family. • Males neutered early in life are less aggressive toward other males and are not distracted by females in heat. Therefore, a neutered male will be less tempted to leave your property and cross that dangerous highway searching for a mate. Neutered males also are less likely to mark every one of your (or your neighbor's) expensive shrubs with his urine as well as inside the house. Spaying your female pet eliminates the problem of stray males camping in your yard and decreases her desire to roam and breed. 3) No family wants to cope with an unwanted pregnancy. Spaying prevents your pet from giving birth to unwanted puppies or kittens. 4) Spaying results in a cleaner female dog and home. Because female dogs pass bloody fluid for about ten days, twice a year, as a part of their estrous cycle, constant care must be taken to avoid carpet stains in homes with such animals. Spaying your dog eliminates this problem. Continued on page 18

Spay and Neuter Continued from page 17
5) You are helping to alleviate the dog and cat overpopulation problem. Each year, millions of unwanted dogs and cats are euthanized (killed) at shelters across the country. Although pet behavioral problems are the main reasons animals are given to shelters, many orphans are the result of accidental breeding by freeroaming, unaltered pets. The more pets spayed or neutered, the fewer dogs and cats will have to be destroyed. Delaware Humane Association does not euthanized; however, hundreds of dogs and cats are turned away each year because there is simply not enough room at the shelter to accommodate them. Six Common Excuses for Not Spaying or Neutering Pets 1) My pet will get fat and lazy. Neutering or spaying may diminish your pet's overall activity level, natural tendency to wander, and hormonal balances, which may influence appetite. Pets that become fat and lazy after being altered usually are overfed and do not get enough exercise. 2) We want another pet just like Rover and Fluffy. Breeding two purebred animals rarely results in offspring that are exactly like one of the parents. With mixed breeds, it is virtually impossible to have offspring that are exactly like one of the parents. 3) My pet's personality will change. Any change will be for the better. After being altered, your pet will be less aggressive toward other dogs or cats, have a better personality, and will be less likely to wander. Spraying (urine marking), which is often done by dogs and cats to mark their territory, diminishes or ceases after pets are altered. 4) We can sell puppies or kittens and make money. Even well-known breeders are fortunate if they 610-440-0245 www.affordablepetcenter.net Hours. Mon.-Sat. 9-8 2022 Main St., Northampton (lower level - rear) Parking in Municipal Lot

break even on raising purebred litters. The cost of raising such a litter -- which includes stud fees, vaccinations and other health care costs, and feeding a quality food -- consumes most of the "profit." Well-known breeders raise breeds that they like. These breeders also try to improve the standard of the breeds they raise. 5) My children should witness our pet giving birth. Pets often have their litters in the middle of the night or in a place of their own choosing. Because pets need privacy when giving birth, any unnecessary intrusion can cause the mother to become seriously upset. These intrusions can result in an unwillingness to care for the offspring or in injury to the owners or to the pet. 6) I am concerned about my pet undergoing anesthesia. Placing a pet under anesthesia is a very common concern of owners. Although there is always a slight risk involved, the anesthetics currently used by veterinarians are very safe. Many veterinarians use equipment that monitors heart and respiratory rates during surgery to ensure that their patients are doing well under anesthesia. Thus, the medical benefits of having your pet spayed or neutered far outweigh the slight risk involved with undergoing anesthesia. Consult your veterinarian if your are concerned about this aspect of the procedure.
Caring for Your Pet: Five Ways to Show you Love Animals Having a pet can be a stressful and exhausting experience. No matter how trying your pet is, you will always love them. Here are just five ways to show them how much. Exercise With Your Pet Exercising your pet is relaxing for both you and your pet. It helps them to burn off stored energy and it gives you a chance to connect with your special friend. Whether it is throwing a ball at the park or teasing them with a ball of yarn, you will feel a special connection with your animal. Regular exercise is an important part of keeping your pet healthy. Without it, they can become overweight and more susceptible to illness. Feed Your Pet Sufficiently Feeding your pet is another way to show how much you care. Careful consideration when choosing what food or treats are best for your breed of animal is a great way to keep them healthy and happy. Checking online, going to pet specific stores and checking with your veterinarian are just some News@TownAndCountryGazette.com || AUGUST 2, 2018
Rescue a Friend Rebel
This fellow needs a home that will be patient with him. He is good with other dogs but does not have any manners. He needs someone who will teach him to sit and walk nice on a leash. If you are willing to love this guy please apply at www. furryfeetrescue.com Brittany Spaniel • Adult • Male • Large Furry Feet Rescue, Walnutport, PA furryfeetrescue@yahoo.com 610-767-7096 ways to get information about what foods and treats are recommended. Take Your Pet for Check-Ups Regular veterinarian visits are not only good for your pet, but can be good for your wallet as well. Early detection of illness, like food allergies and urinary tract infections can help prevent or cure these problems, before they become serious or extremely expensive. Many times homeopathic remedies can be used in the prevention and cure of these types of illness and for overall natural pet health. Get Your Pet Groomed Regular grooming is a great way to care for your pet. Clipping their nails will prevent problems with walking. Brushing their teeth reduces bad breath. Bathing them can reduce dander and itching and will make your pet more comfortable. Brushing an animal’s coat helps to keep their hair loss to a minimum and it is a terrific way to give them the attention they crave. Keep a Regular Schedule Keeping a regular schedule is one of the most important things you can do for your pet and for yourself. Your pet will know when they need to go out, take a nap, play or get ready for bed. This will help their temperament and will help you create a great relationship with your pet. No matter what animal you call friend, taking care of them is an important part of letting them know you love them. AUGUST 2, 2018 || townandcountrygazette.com

Jarvis is looking for his forever home. He was recently pulled from a high kill shelter about 30 minutes before he was scheduled to die. He was surrendered with his sister (they got separated and she was adopted without him). Jarvis is constantly winning hearts over with his sappy face and sweet demeanor. He knows basic commands and takes treats so gently like a good boy! We are working on some leash manners and are making improvements. Jarvis would need to go to a "no cat" home. 29 things dogs Should never eat submitted by Megan Willett
"Can I have some?"We may treat our pets like they're human, but that doesn't mean they get to eat "people food." A recent study found Xylitol, a chemical commonly included in gum and sugar-free peanut butter, was deadlier than chocolate to dogs. It made us wonder: what other common foods are dangerous for our pets? We spoke with two vets, Dr. Richard Goldstein of New York's Animal Medical Center as well as Pamela Edwards of New York's Hope Veterinary Clinic, about what dogs should never eat. Apple seeds and cores The seeds and cores of apples can cause dilated pupils, bright red mucous membranes, difficulty breathing, shock, and even death for your canine pal. They contain cyanide and are most potent when wilting or rotting, according to Dr. Pamela Edwards. Coconut and coconut oil Coconut products are the health trend du jour, but they're likely to cause an upset stomach and diarrhea if you give your dog a large amount of coconut oil, milk, water, or flesh. Avocado Avocado contains persin, a toxin that can cause vomiting and diarrhea in dogs. Grapes and raisins "When I was little, I used to give my dogs grapes all the time," Goldstein said. "But these can cause kidney failure and disease." Though no one knows the exact mechanism, there is a direct association, which also extends to raisins, which are even worse than grapes. Apricot stems, leaves, and pits These can cause dilated pupils, bright red mucous membranes, difficulty breathing, shock, and death. They contain cyanide and are most potent when wilting and rotting.

Onions and chives "They'd have to eat a lot of onions, but for dogs or smaller dogs that can be very dangerous over time because it causes anemia," Goldstein explained. They might also experience gastrointestinal irritation. Garlic Just like onions, garlic can cause stomach issues and even anemia. "Sometimes owners use baby food to feed their dogs and some baby foods have garlic powder," Goldstein said. "We noticed the animals were developing anemia." This is also true for cats, who are very sensitive to garlic. Raw or under-cooked meat and bones Be very careful with the meat or bones you give your dog since raw or under-cooked products can contain bacteria such as Salmonella and E. coli. Bones also pose risk of causing obstruction or even puncturing the gastrointestinal tract. Chamomile Chamomile is the daisy plant herb that can cause contact dermatitis, vomiting, diarrhea, and anorexia in your dog. Long term use can lead to "bleeding tendencies," according to Edwards. Salt and salty snack foods Don't share chips with your canine friend because they can cause excessive thirst and urination, or in cases of sodium toxicity, vomiting, diarrhea, hyperthermia, depression or stupor, tremors, seizures, and death. Cherry steams, leaves, and pits These parts of the cherry also contain cyanide and can cause dilated pupils, bright red mucous membranes, difficulty breathing, shock, and death. Macadamia nuts Macadamia nuts can cause weakness, depression, vomiting, tremors, and hyperthermia. Other nuts, including almonds, walnuts, peanuts, and pecans These nuts can cause vomiting, diarrhea, and News@TownAndCountryGazette.com || AUGUST 2, 2018
pancreatitis due to high fat content, according to Edwards. Mustard seeds These little seeds can cause vomiting and diarrhea for your pet. Rhubarb Rhubarb causes hypersalivation, tremors, and kidney failure, according to Edwards. Tomato plant Tomato plants can lead to solanine toxicity, with side effects such as hypersalivation, anorexia, severe gastrointestinal upset, diarrhea, lethargy, central nervous system depression, confusion, behavioral change, weakness, dilated pupils, and slow heart rate. Citrus fruits Even small doses of citrus fruits like oranges can cause upset stomachs in dogs. Larger doses can cause increased stomach pain and potentially depression of the central nervous system. Chocolate Many people know chocolate is bad for canines, but in addition to vomiting and diarrhea, the methylxanthines in the chocolate can lead to heavy panting, excessive thirst and urination, hyperactivity, abnormal heart rhythm, tremors, seizures, and death. "Darker chocolate is more dangerous than milk and white chocolate as it contains a higher amount of methylxanthines," explained Goldstein. Coffee and caffeine Just like chocolate, coffee and caffeine both contain methylxanthines, which can cause the same symptoms as chocolate. Though your dog probably isn't drinking coffee with you, be wary of where you keep beans in your pantry. Raw eggs Uncooked eggs can cause skin and coat problems for your pet. There's also obviously the potential for Salmonella and E. coli exposure. Milk and dairy "People and cats are really the only mammals that can tolerate milk as adults," Goldstein said. Dogs have a low amount of lactase and have trouble breaking down lactose efficiently, which can cause upset stomachs and diarrhea. Potato leaves, stems, skin, or any green parts Potato leaves and stems can cause vomiting, diarrhea, anorexia, disorientation, lethargy, and central nervous system depression. The skin can cause vomiting, diarrhea, lethargy, tremors, seizures, and cardiac arrhythmias. Peach stems, leaves, and pits These can cause symptoms in your dog like AUGUST 2, 2018 || townandcountrygazette.com
dilated pupils, bright red mucous membranes, difficulty breathing, shock, and even death because they contain cyanide. Licorice "The dilute nutraceutical extracts can have antiinflammatory effects, but large amounts of licorice can cause muscle damage and adrenal gland issues [for your dog]," Edwards said. Alcohol If your dog ingests alcohol it can cause vomiting, diarrhea, decreased coordination, central nervous system depression, difficulty breathing, tremors, coma, and death. Marijuana and edibles Marijuana is a big no-no for pets. In addition to lethargy and dilated pupils, it can cause hypothermia, excessively low or high heart rates, low blood pressure, vomiting, diarrhea, incontinence, coma, or death. Yeast dough Dough with yeast in it can cause life-threatening gastric bloat through increased gas production. In small amounts, it can secondarily cause ethanol by-products to form and therefore cause alcoholinduced toxicity as well. Hops If your dog eats hops somehow, it can cause panting, hyperthermia, seizures, and death via an unknown mechanism. Xylitol Xylitol is a sweetener that's common in gum and "sugar-free" products — including peanut butter. Xylitol can cause vomiting, lethargy, stupor, seizures, and coma. It can also cause liver failture by causing excessive insulin release and hypoglycemia. Of course, not all dogs will react the same way to all foods. If you're in doubt, always ask your vet. "Go over the dietary stuff with your veterinarian and be honest about what you give your dog for treats," Goldstein said. "There are some things that are okay, like rice cakes and string beans, but the majority of what dogs should be eating should always be dog food."

Winnie ~ NEW ENGLAND FOSTER
Winnie is a sweet, playful, loving, 8 month old Australian Shepherd/Lab mix. She came into rescue when she landed in a local shelter and no one came looking for her. Winnie is a delightful girl who gets along well with other dogs and absolutely LOVES people of all ages and sizes. She's very social, and is always eager to spend time with her family. She is very much a puppy, but is also very eager to please and is food motivated. She needs a home with an active family who are ready for their next adventure! As with all of our dogs, we recommend a basic obedience class to help her understand what is expected of her, and this also helps with the bonding process. Winnie's adoption fee is $475, which covers all her vetting, preventatives, fostering costs and other associated expenses. We do not adopt to anyone under the age of 21. X iss fer X-Beine, iss sell net en fremm Watt? Y iss fer Yaahre, sie schleiche so fatt. Z iss fer Zidder, mit Myusick blessierlich; schteht aa fer Zidderli un Zucker nadierlich. The letters of the alphabet [A note on the pronunciation of the letters in Dutch: I used the same spelling convention that I use throughout my articles, so the ‘A’ is pronounced as ‘er’, just like the Dutch word for he. If an h follows a vowel, the vowel is long like ‘beh’, pronounced like ‘Beh’, the Dutch word for ‘leg’. The ‘Z’ is the Dutch ‘Z’ as in ‘Zeit’ – for time. The use of letters ‘C’, ‘J’ and ‘Q’ is not common in Dutch; usually ‘C’ and ‘J’ are used only for English loan words. Some words that start with ‘C’ in English are spelled with the letter K, Karebet for carpet, or S, Sent for cent. Also, words that would start with the letter J in English or German are generally spelled with a Y in our Dialect, i.e. Yesus for Jesus. The ‘Qu’ sound finds its way into Dutch as ‘Gw’, for example, Gwell for well or spring. (But it is Quelle in German.) In addition, while the letter X is found within Dutch words, it does not start word in Dutch. The ‘X-Beine’ example used in the following poem is actually a German word.]
The Dutch ABC's A is for robin, he sings loudly with joy. B is for farmer, he plows and mows. C is for cash, that jingles in pockets. D is for grapes, thistles and dirt. E is for corner ball, that the young boys play when there is a sale: That young man can aim well. F is for chipmunk, friendly and happy. G is for toad, solemn and grey. H is for clown; he is always so silly. I is for bees, with sticky honey. J is for misery, each of us will find it. K is for cat, who sings on the fence. L is for sugar cookies, spicy and sweet; we'd much rather eat them than fruit or vegetables. M is for girls, and they too are sweet – they are sugar and spices from their head to their feet. N is for scamp; he was born so – full of fun and playful with lumps behind his ears. O is for stove, for fruit and for eggs. P is for parson, with a voice like an auctioneer. Q is for dried beef, that tastes so good. Continued on page 34

R is for hobo, with a tattered hat. S is for bacon, with ham also; didn't we eat well on the old farm? T is for Jew's harp, taxes and tea; also for fir tree, tea kettle, and more. U is for rowdy, how we hate these – some folks are as a rowdy as a pen of wild cattle. V is for birds, that sing so sweetly, and eat the bugs from our fruit and vegetables. W is for wasps, bed bugs, and worms; things like this we do not see gladly. X is for knock-knees. Isn't that an odd word? Y is for years, they slip away. Z is for zither, with such pleasant music; also for souse and sugar, of course. - Gladys S. Martin [Die Gladys S. Martin odder Gladys Stauffer Martin waar gebore in 1937 un wuhnt in Effridaa

Ruby-Tuesday-Copycat-Pasta-Salad Ingredients 1 box Rotini pasta (the colorful kind so it’s pretty like mine) :) 1 cup of Hidden Valley ranch 1 cup of mayo 1 package of diced ham 1 package of frozen peas- cooked and drained 2 tablespoons of seasoned salt Note: Ruby Tuesday does not use colorful pasta. This is just an error on my boyfriends part (never send a man grocery shopping) but it turned out great, and I think it makes it look unique! Directions 1. Cook the pasta according to the directions on the box. Strain. 2. Mix the ranch, mayo, and seasoned salt in a large bowl. 3. Stir in pasta 4. Now, add in the cooked & drained peas and diced ham. 5. Refrigerate overnight 6. Serve!

Lehigh Township Historical Society News Submitted by Ruth Hall Kent
Mark your calendars for the two Open House events in August! Our annual opening of the St. Paul's One-Room Schoolhouse, at 780 Almond Road in Lehigh Township, is happening from 10:00 am to 2:00 pm on Saturday August 11th. Along with the schoolhouse being open to visit, we are holding a special program to remember the history of the early 20th century 100 years ago! At 11:30 am plan to be in the fellowship hall of St. Paul's UCC Church for a presentation by Tammy Schane (Talks by
Tammy) about the Progressive movement in the United States that was happening up to the start of World War I. She will speak about that period and how World War I and the Influenza Pandemic of 1918-1919 derailed it. LTHS will have a list of local servicemen who served in WWI and remember their participation in the war. If you have an ancestor who was a veteran of that war and was born in or lived in or near Lehigh Township, please come and check our list. If they were omitted, please let us know so we can add them to the list. Please contact us through our website at www.lehightownshiphistoricalsociety. org or call the Centre at 610-440-0151 and leave a message. Becky's Drive In Published by Cindy Beck Deppe
Becky's Drive-In is excited to announce two of their employees are winners of the 2018 NATO (National Assoc of Theatres Owners) of Pennsylvania Scholarship Program. This is the first time ever that two employees were winners of the NATO of PA Scholarship Program in the same year working at Becky's! Since 2006, there were nine employees that have worked at Becky's and have won the NATO of PA Scholarship contest. One of the requirements to enter the contest is the applicant must work for a movie theatre in Pennsylvania for at least six months. NATO of PA noted that the applicants go to school, come to work on time, work holidays and weekends and are dedicated to the movie industry. For this, we say "Thank You" and Congratulations! Gina Bartlett has been working at Becky's since 2016. Gina has graduated from Northampton High School this past June. She will be attending the University of Pittsburgh this fall and will be on the premed track. In her junior year of college, she hopes to apply for the Emergency Medicine Program. Gina will be an Emergency Medicine major on a pre-med track. Christopher Rehrig has been working at Becky's since 2013. Chris attends Misericordia University in Dallas, PA. He graduated from there in December with a bachelors degree in biology. Chris is now working towards earning his Doctor of Physical Therapy. If all goes well, he expects to graduate with that
degree in December of 2020. There were five winners from 16 applications entered in the contest this year. Eight from high school seniors and eight from college students. Chris received the scholarship while a college student and Gina while a high school senior. We, at Becky's Drive-In, are very proud of Gina and Chris for their dedication to working at Becky's and for working hard at school and winning the NATO of PA Scholarships! The future looks bright for both of them. Most interesting pet pic the T&C Gazette received...

The annual picnic was held on Tuesday, July 17th at Hope Lutheran Church. Approximately 30 members attended and enjoyed a "Pot Luck Picnic". There were games to test your knowledge of flowers and plants as well as door prizes for the member who was the oldest, had the most tomato plants in their garden, who traveled from the furthest location, etc. Mark your calendars now for the return of Linda Kortz on August 14th. She will demonstrate Oriental flower design. The tournament arrangements include "Flower Cart"-a summer bouquet, "Sailing Away"-own interpretation and "Temperature's Rising"-vertical design. Everyone is welcome so come join us on Tuesday, August 14th at 7:00 PM.

Dune’s Training Basically, Dune is a service dog in training that is a year old. He is in the process of learning to help me with my disabilities, but we ran out of funds before we could finish his training. We are hoping that we can raise the remainder that we need to finish his training so he can be a full-fledge service dog and help me in public. Because we ran out of funding, we had to temporarily stop training, which has been really hard on both Dune and I; the sooner we could get back into it, the better. Here’s the link to donate https:// www.gofundme.com/help-fund-dunes-training

NCC To Hold Free Information Session on Career as Community Health Worker submitted by Katherine Noll
Are you community-minded and interested in having a positive impact through a new career? You may want to consider becoming a community health worker (CHW). Northampton Community College (NCC) will hold an information session to learn about this career, training program and how to get started on
August 7 at 6:00 p.m. at the College's Monroe Campus in Tannersville and on August 9 at 6:00 p.m. at NCC's Fowler Family Southside Center in Bethlehem. CHWs work as members of healthcare teams in patient-centered, medical homes or care organizations, helping individuals overcome barriers to care by linking them with their local communities. The session is free. The program itself will begin on September 10. To register, visit Northampton. edu/HealthCareCourses. Questions? Call 610-3326585 or email healthcare@northampton.edu.
Movie Trivia Winner Craig Reenock of Walnutport knew that Selena Gomez voices the character Mavis in Hotel Transylvania 3. Call 610-767-9600 to claim your free Becky’s Drive-In family pack.
