I hope you enjoy this issue as much as we enjoyed putting it together. The cover reminds me of my dog Shadow, he was one of the best dogs ever. He passed away in March of 2011, and I miss him every day. I now have a German Shepherd named Kota and a Rottie, Lab and Pitbull mix named Toby. They are both rescues. Kota will be seven in November and Toby just turned nine in June. They have both stolen my heart; all you animal lovers know what I’m talking about. If you’re looking to adopt a cat or a dog, we have included some adorable ones in this issue. I can’t believe this summer is almost over and our next issue is “back to school.” Enjoy the rest of your summer everyone.

Touch of Dutch Continued from page 15
We men must own up, of course, that the women more diligently go to church than the men. I would not say that this is so because the women more necessarily need it. Occasionally something happens that the man cannot get ready on time. Sunday morning the man of the house stretches his tired legs and looks at the morning sun. He says: “It is now surely high time to get ready to go to church.” The wife complains about a headache and say she will not go. So he lies back on the bed rail and falls asleep again. In a short time later, she grabbed him by the hair and said, they will go to church. “Get yourself ready in a hurry,” she said. “Even if we do not have the right eagerness for it, we must show our neighbors that we are not heathen like them.” A few minutes later things begin. “Adaline, Adaline!” (She is down in the kitchen.) “Yes, yes, what do you want?” He danced around the upstairs like the wild man from Borneo. “Do I still have a shirt in the house? Or did you sell them all to the rag man?” [Sweet] Adaline became an angel, and answered in her sweet, loving voice. “Your shirts are all in the second drawer of the bureau, where they always were,” she said. There six [shirts] lay. He opened the drawer without having seen them. When he looked in it the second time he was quiet for a minute or two. But soon he yelled again, “Adaline, where are you? Are you still living? – What are you doing?” “Yes, yes,” Adaline asks, “What is wrong now?” “Is my Sunday suit out on the scarecrow? I looked around in every corner and found no sign of the suit.” he said. “O my, yes,” Adaline answered, “ It hangs up there in the frontmost room. He opened the door and there hung his good clothing on the wall. He yanked them down, threw them in a corner, and again yelled down the stairs, “Adaline,
please run out to the horse stable and bring me a horse collar [A play on the word, collar.]. I can’t find any collar far and wide. There goes the church bell and I will not be ready until next week.” “Your [detachable] collars are in the first drawer,” Adaline said. And they were there for twenty years and nowhere else. When his collar was on, then he called for socks. “Socks, socks, Adaline! Where in the world are my socks? I already bought 700,000 pairs, but there are no socks in the house.” Adaline ran up the stairs and opened a drawer. “Here, you blind jackass,” she said, “here are twenty pairs of your socks. Why don’t you look?” Everything was still for a minute. He found his shoes without hiring a detective, but when he pulled them on, he screamed bloody murder. Then he held a few diaper pins, a nail, a few screws and many carpet tacks in his hand. “Every room in the house is full of pin cushions and we have three carpenter chests in the wagon shop. I have made places to keep everything handy and in order and what do I find in my shoe? A pound of nails, five pecks of carpet tacks, three dozen screws, pins and what not!” It took Adaline a half hour to explain that the children stuck things in the shoe while playing. By the time that was over, his collar button worked itself loose and rolled under the bed. In two minutes he had his coat, vest and pants off and put on his everyday clothing. “I am no hypocrite,” he said. “If you want to go to church, just go, but as for me, I cannot pretend how deeply I am interested in Christianity, when I am searching for a collar button. Five minutes later, Adaline had a parasol and a hymnbook in her hands and went to church. And her man was on his knees in front of the bed looking for collar buttons. 10 Things Veterinary Professionals Want You to Know About Pet Care WebMD Pet Health Feature By Wendy C. Fries
It can be difficult to stay on top of what's best for your own health and well-being, so knowing what's good for your pet may seem a little confusing. Keep your feline friends and canine companions healthy and happy by following these 10 pet care tips the pros want you to know. 1. Regular Exams are Vital Just like you, your pet can get heart problems, develop arthritis, or have a toothache. The best way to prevent such problems or catch them early is to see your veterinarian every year. Regular exams are "the single most important way to keep pets healthy," says Kara M. Burns, MS, Med, LVT, president of the Academy of Veterinary Nutrition Technicians. Annual vet visits should touch on nutrition and weight control, says Oregon veterinarian Marla J. McGeorge, DVM, as well as cover recommended vaccinations, parasite control, dental exam, and health screenings.

2. Spay and Neuter Your Pets Eight million to 10 million pets end up in U.S. shelters every year. Some are lost, some have been abandoned, and some are homeless. Here's an easy way to avoid adding to that number -- spay and neuter your cats and dogs. It's a procedure that can be performed as early as six to eight weeks of age. Spaying and neutering doesn't just cut down on the number of unwanted pets; it has other substantial benefits for your pet. Studies show it also lowers the risk of certain cancers, Burns tells WebMD, and reduces a pet's risk of getting lost by decreasing the tendency to roam. 3. Prevent Parasites Fleas are the most common external parasite that can plague pets, and they can lead to irritated skin, hair loss, hot spots, and infection. Fleas can also introduce other parasites into your cat or dog. All it takes is for your pet to swallow one flea, and it can to end up with tapeworms, the most common internal parasite affecting dogs and cats. Year-round prevention is key, says McGeorge, who suggests regular flea and intestinal parasite control, as well as heartworm prevention in endemic areas. Because some parasite medications made for dogs can be fatal to cats, talk to your vet about keeping your precious pets worm-free, flea-free -- and safe. 4. Maintain a Healthy Weight Many dogs and cats in the U.S. are overweight or obese. And just like people, obesity in pets comes with health risks that include diabetes, arthritis, and cancer. Overfeeding is the leading cause of obesity, says Douglas, who adds that keeping our pets trim can add years to their lives. Because pets need far fewer calories than most of us think -- as little as 185-370 a day for a small, inactive dog; just 240-350 calories daily for a 10-pound cat -- talk to your vet, who can make

feeding suggestions based on your pet's age, weight, and lifestyle. 5. Get Regular Vaccinations For optimal health, pets need regular vaccinations against common ills, such as rabies, distemper, feline leukemia, and canine hepatitis. How often your dog or cat needs to be immunized depends on their age, lifestyle, health, and risks, says McGeorge, so talk to your vet about the vaccinations that make sense for your pet. 6. Provide an Enriched Environment An enriched environment is another key to the long-term health and welfare of your canine and feline friends, says C.A. Tony Buffington, DVM, PhD, a veterinary nutritionist and professor at Ohio State University Veterinary Medical Center in Columbus. Pets need mental stimulation, say the pros, which may mean daily walks for your pooch, and scratching posts, window perches, and toys for your cat. It means play time with you, which not only keeps your pet's muscles toned and boredom at bay, it also strengthens your bond with your four-footed companions. 7. ID Microchip Your Pet Lack of identification means as few as 14% of pets ever find their way home after getting lost. Fortunately, "microchipping allows for the pet to be reunited with its family," no matter how far away it is when found, Burns says. About the size of a rice grain, a microchip is inserted under the skin in less than a second. It needs no battery and can be scanned by a vet or an animal control officer in seconds. Be sure to register the chip ID with the chip's maker. A current registration is the vital last step in making certain your pet can always find his way home. 8. Pets Need Dental Care, Too Just like you, your pet can suffer from gum disease, tooth loss, and tooth pain. And just like you, regular brushing and oral cleanings help keep your pet's teeth strong and healthy. "Dental disease is one of the most common preventable illnesses in pets," Ohio veterinarian Vanessa Douglas tells WebMD, "yet many people never even look in their pet's mouths." It's estimated 80% of dogs and 70% cats show signs of dental disease by age three, leading to abscesses, loose teeth, and chronic pain. In addition to regular dental cleanings by your vet, "periodontal AUGUST 3, 2017 || townandcountrygazette.com
disease can be avoided by proper dental care by owners," Douglas says. Owner care includes brushing, oral rinses, and dental treats. Your vet is a good source of information about brushing techniques, oral rinses, and dental treats. 9. Never Give Pets People Medication Medicines made for humans can kill your pet, says Georgia veterinarian Jean Sonnenfield, DVM. As a matter of fact, in 2010 the ASPCA listed human drugs in the top 10 pet toxins. NSAIDs like ibuprofen and naproxen are the most common pet poisoning culprits, but antidepressants, decongestants, muscle relaxants, and acetaminophen are just a few of the human drugs that pose health risks to pets. Human drugs can cause kidney damage, seizures, and cardiac arrest in a dog or cat. If you suspect your pet has consumed your medication -- or anything toxic -- call the 24-hour ASPCA Animal Poison Control Center. Also be sure to immediately check with your vet, and if it is during evening or weekend hours when your regular veterinary clinic may be closed, check for a local 24-hour emergency veterinary clinic and take your pet there for an examination. Many metropolitan areas have these clinics. 10. Proper Restraint in a Vehicle You buckle up for safety when you're in the car, shouldn't your pet? Unrestrained pets in a car are a distraction to the driver, and can put driver and pet at risk for serious injury, "or worse," says veterinarian Douglas. To keep pets safe in transit: Never allow pets to travel in the front seat, where they're at risk of severe injury or death if the airbag deploys. Don't let dogs ride with their head out the window or untethered in the back of a truck bed. Both practices put them at risk of being thrown from the vehicle in the event of an accident. To keep pets safe, confine cats to carriers, suggests Douglas, then secure the carrier with a seatbelt. For dogs, there's the option of a special harness attached to a seat belt, or a well-secured kennel.

Animal Food Bank
The Animal Food Bank of the Lehigh Valley helps keep pets out of shelters and in loving homes, one bag of food at a time. The Animal Food Bank distributes pet food to low-income families in Lehigh and Northampton Counties, screened for income and for responsible pet ownership. As a result of the Animal Food Bank’s assistance, these families do not need to make the choice between buying food for their pets and buying food for themselves. The Animal Food Bank usually holds distribution days on the second and third Fridays of the month in its office in Emmaus. More information on requirements for distribution and distribution days can be found at www.afblv.com. The Food Bank is an all volunteer organization; no one is paid for their work. Further, the Animal Food Bank depends entirely on community support in the form of monetary or food donations to make these distributions. Their food supplies are critically low this summer, particularly dry cat food, so donations are most welcome. Address is P.O. Box 4066, Bethlehem, Pa. 18018 and phone is 610-421-8104.

Pet First Aid 101 By Dr. Justine Lee, DVM, DACVECC –Pet Poison Helpline
When it comes to caring for your dog or cat, prevention is the best medicine. So, how do we prevent accidents and emergencies from happening in the first place? Simple steps of prevention like: Keeping your dog on a leash or under strict verbal control (to prevent being hit by a car, etc.) Keeping your cat indoors (to prevent being attacked by the neighborhood dog, etc.) Pet-proofing your house to make sure accidental poisoning doesn’t occur Appropriately crate training of your dog Making sure your pets are appropriately collared (at all times) and microchipped Most importantly, monitor your dog or cat carefully for signs of illness. Prevent an emergency situation before it occurs: be aware of any changes in your pet’s health or behavior. If your pet exhibits any of the following signs, seek veterinary attention immediately! The sooner your veterinarian can diagnose the problem, the better your pet’s prognosis is (and the less expensive it is!). • Lack of appetite • Weight loss • Collapse • Persistent coughing • Dilated pupils • Lethargy/weakness • Blue or pale gums • Restlessness and panting • Unproductive retching • Difficulty breathing • Abnormal heart rate • Pain • Increased thirst • Increased urination • Stop. Assess. Act. If your dog or cat does require first aid, the first thing to do is to stop and remain calm. It’s important that you keep calm so you can properly assess the situation and communicate clearly with your veterinarian, emergency veterinarian, or Pet Poison Helpline. 1. Put safety first. Before rushing in to aid an injured pet, take a moment to ensure that it’s safe for you to enter the area. 2. Check the ABCDs: Airway, Breathing, Circulation, Disability. Clear your pet’s airway, check for breathing and pulse and assess his level of injury. 3. Administer first aid. Control bleeding, flush burns, immobilize broken limbs, etc. AUGUST 3, 2017 || townandcountrygazette.com
4. Get to a veterinary hospital ASAP. Program into your cell phone the numbers of your veterinarian, an emergency veterinarian and Pet Poison Helpline (800-213-6680). Call the veterinary hospital to alert them that you are on the way, so they can be prepared.

Hot Weather Safety Tips ASPCA
We all love spending the long, sunny days of summer outdoors with our furry companions, but being overeager in hot weather can spell danger. To prevent your pet from overheating, take these simple precautions provided by ASPCA experts: Visit the vet for a spring or early-summer checkup. Make sure your pets get tested for heartworm if they aren’t on year-round preventative medication. Pets can get dehydrated quickly, so give them plenty of fresh, clean water when it’s hot or humid outdoors. Make sure your pets have a shady place to get out of the sun, be careful not to overexercise them, and keep them indoors when it’s extremely hot. Know the symptoms of overheating in pets, which include excessive panting or difficulty breathing, increased heart and respiratory rate, drooling, mild weakness, stupor or even collapse. Symptoms can also include seizures, bloody diarrhea and vomit along with an elevated body temperature of over 104 degrees. Animals with flat faces, like Pugs and Persian cats, are more susceptible to heat stroke since they cannot pant as effectively. These pets, along with the elderly, the overweight, and those with heart or lung diseases, should be kept cool in airconditioned rooms as much as possible. Never leave your animals alone in a parked vehicle. Not only can it lead to fatal heat stroke, it is illegal in several states! Do not leave pets unsupervised around a pool— not all dogs are good swimmers. Introduce your pets to water gradually and make sure they wear flotation devices when on boats. Rinse your dog off after swimming to remove chlorine or salt from his fur, and try to keep your dog from drinking pool water, which contains chlorine and other chemicals. Open unscreened windows pose a real danger to pets, who often fall out of them. Keep all
LehighValleyScoopers.com 610-802-0643 22
unscreened windows or doors in your home closed, and make sure adjustable screens are tightly secured. Feel free to trim longer hair on your dog, but never shave your dog: The layers of dogs’ coats protect them from overheating and sunburn. Brushing cats more often than usual can prevent problems caused by excessive heat. And be sure that any sunscreen or insect repellent product you use on your pets is labeled specifically for use on animals. When the temperature is very high, don’t let your dog linger on hot asphalt. Being so close to the ground, your pooch’s body can heat up quickly, and sensitive paw pads can burn. Keep walks during these times to a minimum. Commonly used rodenticides and lawn and garden insecticides can be harmful to cats and dogs if ingested, so keep them out of reach. Keep citronella candles, tiki torch products and insect coils of out pets’ reach as well. Call your veterinarian or the ASPCA Animal Poison Control Center at (888) 4264435 if you suspect your animal has ingested a poisonous substance. Remember that food and drink commonly found at barbeques can be poisonous to pets. Keep alcoholic beverages away from pets, as they can cause intoxication, depression and comas. Similarly, remember that the snacks enjoyed by your human friends should not be a treat for your pet; any change of diet, even for one meal, may give your dog or cat severe digestive ailments. Avoid raisins, grapes, onions, chocolate and products with the sweetener xylitol. Please visit our People Foods to Avoid Feeding Your Pets page for more information. Please leave pets at home when you head out to Fourth of July celebrations, and never use fireworks around pets. Exposure to lit fireworks can potentially result in severe burns or trauma, and even unused fireworks can contain hazardous materials. Many pets are also fearful of loud noises and can become lost, scared or disoriented, so it’s best to keep your little guys safe from the noise in a quiet, sheltered and escape-proof area of your home. Be prepared in the event that your pet does escape by downloading the ASPCA Mobile App.You’ll receive a personalized missing pet recovery kit, including step-by-step instructions on how to search for a lost animal in a variety of circumstances. We can not guarantee that our animals are good with cats, dogs or children. We can however tell you if an animal would not be a good fit for a home with cats, dogs or children. What we share about the animal is what we have observed during their stay at the shelter. The best thing to do is to come to the shelter to meet the animal to see if you like his/her personality. You just simply can not tell if an animal is right for you over the phone or via email. We hope to see you soon!

What a place! My name is Danny Grae and I am NOT a salesman. However, I would like to tell you about Pond View Manor - a personal care home that has captured my attention and my heart. And the only reason I can do this is because I have seen firsthand the quality of care and the happiness of the residents that live there. My association with this facility began when I was hired earlier this year by owner, Regina Sharpe, to teach a Chair Zumba class for the residents. The class was a success, so I was asked to return for additional classes. In addition to doing Chair Zumba classes, I am also an entertainer, and I was invited by Regina to perform with my guitarist at Pond View Manor. It was a successful show which sealed my fate as a regular entertainer/teacher at this wonderful facility. Through these classes and shows, I have personally seen how well these residents are taken care of and loved. Pond View Manor is a lovely home located near the base of the Blue Mountains, tucked away from the busy highways, and situated on three plus acres of lush countryside. Yet, they are so close to major hospitals and numerous doctors if ever needed. The home features a modern, but quaint, interior including six bathrooms, spacious bedrooms, a beautiful wrap-around deck, comfortable sitting nooks, a family dining room, and a living room with a large television and a cathedral ceiling. All it takes is one quick visit and you’ll feel the same country tranquility that I felt. It’s gorgeous! They provide a comfortable and safe home away from home for your loved one. With only eight residents, absolute personal care is easily given to each resident. They have home-cooked meals that focus on healthy dietary needs. The staff is well trained and can help with medications, personal hygiene, appointment management, laundry and housekeeping. They specialize in Dementia/ Memory care and those with special needs including Diabetes management. In house rehabilitation and podiatry services are also readily available along with other services as needed. Probably the best service that they provide is tending to the overall well being of the residents with their caring attitude and interactive in-house activities that keep their spirits active and alive. Residents 40 years old and above are welcome and those that currently live here are all very well adjusted and happy. Whenever I stop in to visit I feel like I’m walking into somebody’s home - not a personal care facility. It’s a bright and cheerful atmosphere with such a feeling of family where smiles abound. Because of the performing and teaching I do throughout the area, I have seen many great personal care facilities and Pond View Manor ranks Continued on Page 26 AUGUST 3, 2017 || townandcountrygazette.com

up there as one of the best. I can highly recommend this wonderful home without reservation or concern about my reputation. But please, don’t just take my word for it. If you’re in need of a quality personal care home that offers reasonable rates for exceptional care, give them a call and set up an appointment to visit their home. I’m sure you’ll be SALE ¢ as impressed as I am! As I said before, I am just 79 not a salesman. I’m just a regular guy that knows a good thing when he sees it! New Hotel Project Slated for Kutztown Area submitted by DAVID JOHNSON
A 100-room Hampton Inn and Suites is proposed to be built in Maxatawny Township just west of the borough of Kutztown on the current site of the Campus Inn. This is the first nationally-branded hotel in the immediate Kutztown area. Hampton Inn and Suites is part of the Hilton Hotels group. This new hotel will provide convenient and reasonably-priced accommodations for visitors to Kutztown University, Berks and Lehigh County business travelers and travelers visiting the Kutztown community to take advantage of the many regional events and attractions that this locale has to offer. Developers are targeting the groundbreaking for the four-story, $13 million project in the spring of 2018, with the grand opening targeted for the spring of 2019. The project will bring construction and hotel jobs to the area and, when completed, will be a benefit to the Kutztown and local business community. The venture will be led by Ursus Aureus and Golden Bear Ventures, subsidiaries of the Kutztown University Foundation (KUF). "We are thrilled to bring a quality, nationallybranded hotel to the Kutztown area," said Scott AUGUST 3, 2017 || townandcountrygazette.com
Dorn, chairman and president of Ursus Aureus and Golden Bear Ventures. "This is all about economic development and is a long-term investment for everyone involved. We have an outstanding development team of multi-disciplined specialists assembled," Dorn said. "This will ensure the success of the project from the very beginning." The hotel will be managed by TKo Hospitality Management of Wilmington, Del., and will include an indoor pool, fitness room, two small conference rooms, and will offer a continental breakfast. KCBA Architects of Hatfield, Pa. will serve as the architects for the project. "We expect the new hotel to attract visitors to the university, the Kutztown Folk Festival, Kutztown Fair and local businesses, and the many attractions in the East Penn Valley," Dorn said. "While the hotel will be customized to fall in line with the superior Hilton/Hampton Inn and Suites model, we will add a local flare to the property." cloth be the actual burial shroud of Jesus? Could the Shroud of Turin be a document of the crucifixion? Is that even possible? Or is it nothing more than a medieval hoax? The 14-foot-long Shroud of Turin is the most analyzed artifact in the world yet remains a mystery, bearing the faint front and back image of a 5’10” bearded, crucified man with apparent wounds and bloodstains that match the crucifixion account as recorded in the bible. Millions of people over the centuries have believed it be the actual burial shroud of Jesus. National Geographic called it “One of the most perplexing enigmas of modern times.” Shroud Encounter is a fast moving, big-screen experience using over 200 images covering all aspects of Shroud research. Russ Breault has been researching and lecturing on The Shroud of Turin for over 30 years. He has presented to numerous college and universities including Duke and Johns Hopkins, and has appeared in several nationally televised documentaries on CBS and The History Channel. SHROUD ENCOUNTER will be coming to St John’s United Church of Christ, 22 Atlas Rd, Northampton, PA on Sunday, August 20 at 6:30 PM. Admission is $5.00. memory donate to the nonprofit Springside Sportsman Club Inc., This request was made in Herzog’s obituary. In his memory Springside Sportsman Club decided to purchase, unveil and display on the hatchery's premises, a beautiful granite bench which has his facial impression etched on as well as the Fisherman’s Prayer. The bench was unveiled on Friday June 21, 2017. Many from the community as well as friends and family attended. The hatchery oversees more than 3,000 living trout from June until May when the large trout are released into Trout Creek. Robert Herzog’s presence will always be felt. He was very proud to be a part of the hatchery and was always there to help, and now he’ll always be there.

Local Charity Celebrates “A Million Miles That Matter”
On July 6 the Krysta Hankee Memorial Fund served a beautifully decorated cake to 48 golfers and volunteers during a “Courses that Care, Miles that Matter” event at Whitetail Golf Club in Bath, PA. For the past seven years the Hankees have partnered with several golf courses that provide discounts to their golfers who participate in golf events to support the “Miles that Matter” program. The cake was served in celebration of that seven year quest to raise over $100,000 needed to provide a million miles of travel to families addressing critical needs. The money raised is used to purchase Giant gift cards at a 5% discount through Giant’s “Cash for Causes” program. The cards are then given to families in need. The money was raised through golf outings, social events, community donations, partnerships with local businesses and the Morning Call “Be an Angel” program. The “Krysta Cares Flight Club” was created as a community service wing of the Krysta Hankee Memorial Fund. The purpose of the Flight Club is to raise money and to create community partnerships to address needs within the community. Each fund
raising event is called a “Flight”. In the past seven years the charity has initiated 131 flights. The million mile mark was met with Flight #130 on June 15 at Bethlehem Golf Club. This event was in support of Haven House in Allentown and consisted of a golf outing and a “Dine to Donate” event at the Clubhouse Grill located at the golf course. A thousand dollars was raised to assist Haven House patients addressing mental health issues. Gas cards are mostly distributed through a partnership with regional family service and health care organizations. These agencies have social workers on staff that can identify the greatest needs within the community.

Local contractor nominated for prestigious award submitted by TINA LIVENGOOD
Livengood Excavators Inc., of Walnutport PA., was voted one of the Top 12 Contractors in the US. The Equipment World Magazine promotes the Annual Contractor of the Year event. Livengood Excavators Inc., was nominated by our local CAT dealer.Thousands of nominations were received and reviewed. These nominations were narrowed down to the Top 100 in the US, and then further down to the Top 25 in the US. At that time, Leo Livengood, Owner and President of the company, was notified that Livengood Excavators Inc., was in the top 25. This in itself, was a great honor for Leo. The contest was then whittled down the Top 12! Leo said he was surprised and honored to be chosen as one of the Top 12 Contractors in the nation. This prestigious award included a trip to Las Vegas where The Equipment World Contractor of the Year event ceremonies took place. Also included in this trip were several roundtable discussions about the industry. The weekend long event included a trip to the March 12 NASCAR Kobalt Tools 400 race at Las Vegas Motor Speedway and to CONEXPO, the largest equipment display in the world. The event was then topped off with the Gala awards and Banquet. Harvey Livengood Excavating, was started back in 1947, in Palmerton PA., by Leo’s father, Harvey Livengood, who was owner and operator with two part time employees. In 1950, Harvey moved the business to its present location along Rte. 248 in Walnutport. Leo started operating equipment at the age of 12, working mostly after school and during the summer. In the 1970’s Leo purchased the company from his father and changed the name to Livengood Excavators Inc. Most local people are well aware of the well maintained Red and White Livengood Excavators trucks which can be seen all over the Lehigh Valley. One of the first jobs that Leo did, with his father, was grading the ramps where the cars park at Becky’s Drive In, owned and operated by the Beck family. Becky’s Drive In, put in a second screen several years ago and Leo had the honor of once again, grading the ramps for the new second screen. Leo said he wanted to do this himself, as it was the second generation of the Beck family putting in the screen and the second generation
46
of Livengood family doing the grading, approximately 60 years after the first screen. Livengood Excavators Inc., currently has approximately 85 employees. Most employees that are employed here, have worked here at least fifteen or more years, some as long as 40 years. Leo and Tim continue to strive to find the right fit of employee. Leo’s immediate family members all work for the company. His son Tim, started working in the business while still in high school as a truck driver and equipment operator. He went onto college and then began doing estimating and project management. He continues to oversee all estimating and all project management. His knowledge has pushed Livengood Excavators Inc., to be one of the top commercial, industrial and residential excavating and paving companies in the Lehigh Valley. In its almost 60 years of existence, Livengood Excavators Inc., has probably completed more commercial sites in the Lehigh Valley than any other contractor. His wife Betty, has been the bookkeeper since the beginning and continues to be in the office daily, and is a very integral part of the company. His daughter Tina, has worked for the company for 30 years and continues to perform all aspects of HR and accounting. Because of its growth over the years, additional office space and employees have been added. Lynn, Andrea and Elizabeth all help with office administration. Bill Parliman, is the lead estimator, bidding commercial and industrial projects of all sizes. He receives assistance from Josh, who is knowledgeable with AGTEK automated take- off. Livengood Excavators Inc., can be seen working throughout the Lehigh Valley. They have anywhere from 20-25 large jobs at a time. Livengood could recently be seen in the Lehighton area working on the Lehighton KIA and St. Luke’s Blakeslee projects. Livengood is also currently working on numerous other projects in the Lehigh Valley, including Hellertown, Center Valley and Upper Macungie. Leo Livengood, at 77 years of age is still very active in the day to day aspects of running the business. He will still occasionally fill in as an operator on any of the equipment in his fleet. He is proud of the longevity of the business.
