Meet the Staff Christmas is a holiday rife with traditions. Name one that you absolutely must do every single year. Joe Korba, Associate Publisher: From my parents still hanging up my Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles stocking, to my grandmother making me recite a certain prayer before dinner, we have a lot of traditions that span back as far as I can remember. In my house, my fiance and I always listen to Vince Guaraldi’s awesome A Charlie Brown Christmas while we decorate.

Tony Pisco, Art Director: I have a tiny elf from when my mom was a child that I like to get out when we start to decorate. I move him around every day so you have to keep your eyes open to where it is. The elf is a little strange looking though, so he creeps out my wife. It can be humorous when she spots him and is momentarily spooked by it. Well, humorous for me, I suppose.

Danielle Tepper, Publishing Assistant: I still live with my parents and I’ve been setting my alarm for 4 a.m. Christmas Day since high school. I sneak downstairs, flip on the tree lights, and just sit for a minute. Christmas is always over in the blink of an eye; it’s relaxing and gratifying to simply bask in it while my family is still ‘nestled all snug in their beds.’ Everything is untouched and looks magical—like Santa just left!

Donna Bachman, Accounting Manager: The Christmas tradition at my house would have to be baking of cookies. Everyone family member has a different favorite cookie. Of course I make batches of everything: Chocolate chip with and without nuts, cut-out cookies (love the different shapes), nut tossies, ricotta cookies (iced and you cannot forget the sprinkles), peanut butter with Hershey Kisses in the middle … you name the cookie and I probably have a recipe, all ready to bake up a storm.

Alice Wanamaker, Publishing Assistant: Every year around Christmas, I watch “Prancer.” It is my favorite Christmas movie!

Tyler Trumbauer, Staff Writer: My Christmas tradition is a forced one that I try to break every year, but have been unsuccessful thus far. My anxious younger brother scampers around the house waking up everyone before the sun rises Christmas morning. Clothed in pajamas and donning bed hair, we all open presents and devour cinnamon buns before the clock strikes 7 a.m. Sleep is always on my wish list for Christmas, but I have yet to get it thanks to my brother and this fatigued custom.

How to Take the Perfect Family Holiday Portrait (StatePoint) If your family’s seasonal traditions include taking a holiday portrait, you probably have a stack of photos that all pretty much look the same. Rather than adding another stilted family photo to the pile this year, consider breaking out of the mold with a candid portrait instead. Think for a moment about one of your favorite photos. Is it the one where everyone is posed, sitting properly with a perfect smile, all eyes on the camera? Or is it the one where you caught an unexpected laugh? Candid photography is how you can really capture the personality and spirit of your subjects, say the experts. George Lange, author of the new book, “The Unforgettable Photograph: 228 Ideas, Tips, and Secrets for Taking the Best Pictures of Your Life,” says the secret to great photography is shooting what a moment feels like, rather than what it looks like. He is offering all family photographers— whether they are using a point-and-shoot, a topend manual camera or smartphone—tips for capturing their loved ones in special and unique ways. • Be in the moment: Fight the nostalgic impulse to take a picture designed to memorialize the

moment for future generations. Instead, be in the moment, shoot in the moment. Encourage inspiration by gathering your family in a place where everyday moments occur, such as the backyard or porch. • Ditch the zoom: Move your feet, bend your knees, get your pants dirty. Get low. Climb above. Get down to the eye-level of the subject. Don’t zoom the lens unless it’s completely necessary. Push your camera right into things.

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year

Best wishes for a safe and happy holiday season from the agents at Roscoe P. Snyder Insurance

www.townandcountrygazette.com | December 19, 2013

• See the light: Light is the photographer’s palette and toolbox, a kind of visual thesaurus that offers a thousand ways to portray the same scene or subject. Learn to play with it. • Feel the rhythm: There’s a natural rhythm to life. Outside the studio, every scene has its own rhythm, every place its beat. Listen for that. If you’re in sync and just a little bit lucky, the shutter will open at just the right beat. • Keep shooting: “Often I see people spending more time examining the shots they’ve just taken on their camera screen than taking more pictures. This is not productive!” says Lange. “You can’t predict when you’ll get a good shot in a sequence, and you certainly can’t see it on a tiny screen. Just keep shooting. No harm asking most subjects for a do-over -- and another. For kids it’s a game.” • Use objects out of context: Props often make portrait-taking easier by giving subjects something to relate to and play with, distracting them from the camera. Props taken out of context—a dining chair on a lawn, even in a snowstorm—immediately add interest and fun. More photography tips can be found at www. unforgettablephotograph.com. By rethinking the way you shoot your family’s holiday portrait, you can add depth and emotion to your family photo album this year.

Slatington gets a fresh collection of lights Submitted by Robert Stettner Northern Lehigh Future Focus, a local community-visioning group, in the Northern Lehigh area announces the placement of 12 brand new lighted wreaths on the General Morgan Bridge just in time for the holiday season. The Slatington Borough Crew installed the wreaths on Tuesday, Nov. 19 and they were first lit on the evening of Tuesday, Nov. 26. Slatington’s Christmas lights, which dated back to mid1960s were replaced approximately 12 years ago. At that time, enough were purchased so that each of the sixty light poles on Main Street had a decoration. Since that time, additional lights were purchased in Walnutport and on the Lehigh River Bridge between the two boroughs. This was done through grant money and public donations. This allowed for a continuous display of Christmas lights along Main Street from Route 145 in Walnutport to the Southern border of Slatington. A few years ago, the new General Morgan Bridge was constructed and 16 Victorian-style light poles were installed on the bridge and its approaches. These new light poles came with receptacles for lights. However, not enough old decorations are left to cover these light poles, and in addition, a smaller type of General Morgan Bridge Decorations decoration was needed to attach to these shorter, smaller light By Jessica Siarkowski poles. There was a gap in the Christmas decorations at the bridge. Northern Lehigh Future Focus wanted to remedy this situation by conducting a fund drive in order to purchase new decorations to hang on at least half of the bridge light poles. The decorations are similar to the existing decorations, however they use LED lighting to cut down

on electric and maintenance costs. They were purchased from Rileighs Outdoor Decor of Bethlehem. Funds for the lighting came from three sources: a grant, local residents and area businesses. The total cost of the project for 12 LED lighted 36” wreaths was $3,125. Northern Lehigh Future Focus secured an $1,160 grant from the Greater Lehigh Valley Chamber of Commerce Foundation for the project. The remaining funds were received from local residents and businesses and totaled $1,710. NLFF wishes to recognize and thank the following businesses, individuals and civic organizations that contributed to the General Morgan Bridge Christmas Decoration Project: David and Janice Altrichter, Debbie Barhight, Barb and Darrell Baus, Bechtel’s Pharmacy, Rentschler Chevrolet, Chrysler, Jeep, Dodge Foundation, Slatington Lions Club and Steckel & Stopp, Attorneys. Through the efforts of Northern Lehigh Future Focus, the Borough of Slatington, the Lehigh Valley Chamber of Commerce Foundation and civic minded businesses, organizations and residents, there is once again a continuous display of Christmas decorations and lighting from Route 145 in Walnutport to the southern end of Slatington.

Cafeteria Holiday Decorating Awards

Submitted by Sue Bahnick Northern Lehigh School District held its 2nd annual Cafeteria Holiday Decorating contest on Friday, Dec. 6. The judges consisted of administrators and staff. Each kitchen was judged on their selected theme, holiday spirit, going above and beyond and overall decorations. Our winner this year was the high school. They created a magical Candy Land theme. The cafeteria was amazing! Every kitchen did a wonderful job and the students get to enjoy the decor for the remainder of the season. A big thank you to all of the staff in each kitchen for the time you put into decorating the cafeteria. It can now be enjoyed by the entire district. Best wishes to all for a safe and healthy holiday season!

Great Gifts for Outdoor Enthusiasts (StatePoint) There’s no better time than the holiday season to help your favorite outdoor thrill seekers gear up for all their upcoming adventures. Even if the hiker, backpacker or climber you know already has their favorite gear, new innovations in outdoor products are helping both new and seasoned adventurers go further and higher. Here are a few ways to find the ideal holiday gift for the outdoor enthusiast in your life: Give Back Help protect the environment that your gift recipient so passionately enjoys with eco-friendly gear. For example, you can buy hats, jackets and even boots made from recycled material. Even if you don’t go the recycled route, you can shop with sustainability in mind by opting for durable gear will last a lifetime. The less often a jacket, tent or sleeping bag needs replacing, the better for the environment. Warm Up Gone are the days where a simple down coat is the be-all and end-all of staying warm during an outdoor adventure. Now, technically advanced outdoor apparel, equipment and footwear are designed to fit the versatile needs of outdoor enthusiasts, offering lightweight options that offer warmth in varying weather conditions.

For example, the ThermoBall Jacket, recently unveiled by The North Face and awarded Editors’ Choice by Backpacker Magazine, is made of a synthetic insulation that mimics the loft and warmth of a down cluster, with the added benefit of insulation retention when wet. “This technology is inspired by the needs of our athletes,” says Joe Vernachio, Vice President at the North Face of global product Joe Vernachio. “And this insulation has been tested and approved by our climbing team in the Himalayas.” Washable and durable, it’s a good jacket for packing too, as it compresses neatly into its hand pocket. Look for lightweight ThermoBall insulated jackets and vests for your gift recipient at www. TheNorthFace.com. Get Inspired While your gift recipient may wish to be in the great outdoors all the time, that’s not usually possible. Give him or her something to do between adventures with a good book or eBook. There are plenty of great outdoor adventure and travel memoirs that offer inspiration, even for someone who is curled up in bed. Or, consider purchasing a subscription to an outdoor adventure magazine. This holiday season, keep your backpacker happy, warm and inspired.

Romanian Natives to Speak at Northampton Assembly of God Submitted by Pastor Daniel E. Lundmark Missionaries Mike and Ana Dascalesescu will be the guest speakers at Northampton Assembly of God (3449 Cherryville Rd. in Northampton) on Sunday, Dec. 29 in the 10:45 a.m. and 6:00 p.m. services. Mike and Ana are natives of Romania and have lived in the U.S. for 30 years after miraculously escaping from religious persecution under the Communist regime. Last September, they spoke at Northampton Assembly of God and shared a number of very stirring testimonies of how God miraculously aided their escape. After the fall of the Communist party in 1989, Ana and Mike sought for an opportunity to take

the Gospel into the devastated land of Romania. They took yearly short-term trips, ministering in the villages of the Transylvania and Moldova region. After much prayer and seeking the Lord's will, they spent a summer in Romania and became certain of God’s call to return as full-time missionaries. They then served a two-year term as missionary assistants. Being fluent and efficient in the language, they were asked to work at the School of Missions in Agigea, preparing young nationals to become missionaries to the least evangelized areas of the world. They envision building forty churches in the next decade.

Joke Corner A New Year Prayer For the Elderly God, grant me the senility to forget the people I never liked anyway, the good fortune to run into the ones that I do, and the eyesight to tell the difference. Lecture Tour with A Difference On New Year's Eve, Daniel was in no shape to drive, so he sensibly left his van in the car park and walked home. As he was wobbling along, he was stopped by a policeman. “What are you doing out here at 4:00 in the morning?” asked the police officer. “I'm on my way to a lecture,” answered Roger. “And who on earth, in their right mind, is going to give a lecture at this time on New Year's Eve?” inquired the constable sarcastically. “My wife,” slurred Daniel grimly. Christmas is the most wonderful time of the year for a reason. Without quoting too many sappy carols, these are a few of my favorite things: Decorating, baking cookies, drinking hot chocolate, and watching movies. Below are some different ways to enjoy these holiday traditions. Try them, enjoy them … and have yourselves a merry little Christmas. —Danielle Tepper

ORNAMENTS

Glass balls are the quintessential classy Christmas ornament, but they’re awfully fragile. In order to keep these beautiful ornaments safe around your kids (and pets), opt instead for plastic—and better yet, design some yourselves. Hollow balls and other shapes can be found at your local craft store. Settle in for an arts and crafts session with your little ones and try these DIY ideas for a more colorful and creative tree:

Glitter

By swirling a little cleaning fluid inside, the glitter is guaranteed to stick. Do a little at a time and use different colored glitter for a galaxy effect.

Sprinkles

It couldn’t be any easier!

Keepsake

Preserve a piece of your child’s wishlist (or letter to Santa) throughout the years. Add some decorative tinsel or snowflakes for extra flair. These and more found at BuzzFeed.com: www.buzzfeed.com/swelldesigner/39-ways-to-decorate-a-glass-ornament-22zb

CHRISTMAS COOKIES

Page 33

HOT COCOA

How many houses must serve Santa good ol’ fashioned chocolate chip? Try something new for the big guy this year and leave out one of these instead:

Cookies aren’t complete without a steaming mug of hot chocolate to dunk them in—spruce up that packet of Swiss Miss with these delicious tricks:

Reindeer

Peppermint

Rudolph will love these! Bake any type of cookie you want (peanut butter, gingerbread, or just plain sugar). When rolling the dough into balls, slightly pinch one end, then flatten with your hand; they will bake “head-shaped.” Use chocolate-covered pretzels and red M&Ms to make the faces.

Melting Snowmen

How cute are these? Find the recipe here: http:// simplystitchedtogether. com/2012/12/25/ christmas-cookie-recipemelted-snowman-cookies

Peppermint Crunch

Simply take Keebler’s Grasshopper cookies, dip them in white chocolate and sprinkle with some crushed candy canes.

Use a candy cane as a swizzle stick or a bit of peppermint extract does the trick. Like a liquid Thin Mint!

Cinnamon

Soak a cinnamon stick or add a teaspoon of powder and enjoy.

Caramel

Put a caramel hard candy at the bottom of your mug before adding the hot water. It will dissolve for just a hint of flavor. For a richer taste, use caramel syrup. These and more found on BuzzFeed.com: www.buzzfeed.com/ notmonroe/16-twists-oninstant-hot-cocoa-gg32

Or … feeling lazy? (Aren’t we all?) CoffeeMate ain’t just for coffee—their holiday selection is an easy and delicious way to add seasonal flavor to your cocoa.

Christmas Services at Radiant Church

Submitted by Chris Zweifel New church plant and grassroots effort, Radiant Church, will celebrate its first Christmas Eve together as a congregation and warmly invites the public. Radiant Church was created with unchurched people in mind. Radiant’s Pastor, Rev. Rob Zweifel, wants it to be a place that unchurched people love to attend. What does he mean by “unchurched?” “Many people have given up on church, but they haven’t given up on God,”Zweifel says. “My heart’s desire is to let those people know that God hasn’t given up on them. My calling is to provide an atmosphere that is warm and inviting, to teach the values, principles and truths in the Bible, and to help people apply them to their lives.” A comfortable, relaxing setting was important to Zweifel and his team that is helping to plant this church. They found this setting at Regal Cinema. “Regal Entertainment Group is a pleasure to work with. They even go as far as providing resources to help us operate a portable church,” Zweifel said. Christmas Eve will be celebrated at 7 p.m. on

An Invitation from St. Nicholas Catholic Church

Submitted by Theresa Speicher Christmas is a beautiful season, yet it can bring mixed emotions. Along with anticipation, many feel stressed financially or are worn out by shopping, planning and preparing. It is a time when we may more deeply feel the loss of loved ones, the pain of separation from family members and worry over health concerns. Yet, below these mixed feelings, there can be a sense of peace and joy that flows from knowing that God so loves us that he gave His only Son. If Christmas is to have any real and deep significance for us, Christ must be at the center of our celebration. Our parish Continued on Page 38

Touch of Dutch Desember, 1984 Marriye iss der sext Desember, der Daag, wu viele Leit in unserer Welt em Heiliche Nicholaus sei Gebottsdaag feiere. Der Nicholas waar en Bischof in Glee-Asien un waar im Yaahr 350 gschtarrewe. Er waar en grosser Mann un waar net yuscht in seinre eegene Schtadt verehrt, awwer weit un breet, gans in Deitschland nei, wu unsere Voreldre beikumme sin. In Deitschland hot’s aa en Kall gewwe, as sie „der Belsnickel“ gheese hen. Daer waar schunn vun uralder Zeit unnich de Deitsche. Daer waar so ebbes vumme Hanswascht – woll ken Engel, un aa net immer en Bengel. Awwer was leit dehinner? Mol ee Ding, as mer graad vannenaus saage muss iss,as die Bedeiding „Nicholas in Furs“, as mer oftmols heert, gans un gaarli falsch iss – mindeschdens wann’s zu der urschpringliche Bedeiding kummt.

Mir saage als „Der alt Nick gricht dich.“ Im Englische Waddebuch heest’s Watt „Nickel“ ebbes wie „demon.“ -Rev. Richard Druckenbrod (1929 – 2003) in the Morning Call December 5, 1984 Tomorrow is the 6th of December, the day when many people in our world celebrate the birthday of St Nicholas. Nicholas was a bishop in Asia Minor and he died in 350 A. D. He was an important man and was not just revered in his own area, but far and wide, well into Germany, from where are ancestors came. In Germany there was also fellow that they called the “Belsnickel”. [The word can also be spelled “Belznickel”.] He was already from olden times among the Germans. That one was something of a rascal, certainly no angel but also not always a villain. The trouble was when the Germans wanted to give up their paganism for Christianity. But like (it is) with so many other things, it had not taken some of the elders long to ‘rebaptize’ or rename the heroes of the past, so they could still be retained for a longer time. And so, in many regions of Germany, they tied in the Belsnickel with St. Nicholas, so church people could not say anything against that (tradition). And that (tie) went so far that the Belsnickel, with his sack of nuts and hard candy, now came around on the 6th of December to the people to see which children were good and which children were bad. [Has anyone in our area ever heard of the Belsnickel coming on St. Nicholas’ Day? Please let us know if you have!] But what’s my point here? Well one thing that one has to say right up front is that the meaning “Nicholas in furs”, that one often hears, is completely and truly false – at least when it comes to the original meaning. Pit [Pit Schweffelbrenner – his pen name] recently studied these matters here rather well and would like to propose that it would be better for the name to mean thus: “Little devil in hides.” It is no doubt that the word “Bels” is like the English “pelt” and means the hides from animals. But the word “nickel” in that name, in general, has nothing to do with Continued on Page 46

Touch of Dutch Continued from Page 44 St. Nicholas. It means more like a little devil or angry ghost. We often say, “The old Nick [The devil] will get you.” (Also), in the English dictionary the word “nickel” is called something like a “demon”. [Etymology for “nickel”: “German Kupfernickel niccolite, literal, copper demon (so called because though looking like copper it yielded none.)” - Random House Dictionary] [This writer once went to a family orientated, ‘old fashioned Christmas’ program which included an

appearance by the Belznickel. Before the leader of that group brought him out, he asked if anyone knew what “Belznickel” meant. And, of course, I volunteered “demon in furs” and since he did not ‘hear’ me, I repeated it more loudly a second time. At that point, my wife suggested to me that perhaps I should ‘cease and desist’, since there were many little children in the audience and they would come to fear him. There are times to enlighten and also times to leave things well enough alone! I am sure there must be a proverb along that line somewhere.] Hallicher Grischtdaag un Hallich Nei Yaahr zu eich all! LCCC Unveils New Athletics Logo at Fan Appreciation Night Submitted by Denise M. Reifinger Schnecksville, Pa., Dec. 6 – Led by athletics director Jocelyn Beck, Lehigh Carbon Community College (LCCC) unveiled its new athletics logo last night at the college’s Fan Appreciation Night in the college’s gymnasium on main campus in Schnecksville, Pa. The men’s and women’s basketball teams took on the Trailblazers of Luzerne County Community College. Both Lehigh Carbon teams won their games. LCCC unveiled its new athletics logo to a standing room-only crowd of more than 200 LCCC Cougar fans. The new logo comes after a rigorous process of polling LCCC alumni, students, staff and faculty and members of the community. “It really was an inclusive process; involving everyone on-campus and community members throughout the Lehigh Valley and Schuylkill and Carbon counties,” explained Jocelyn Beck, LCCC Director of Athletics. “Recommendations and thoughts on what should be represented were very helpful when we began working with the designers.” The unveiling event included T-shirts giveaways, bumper stickers and magnets for fans

The logo was designed by New Jersey-based Phoenix Design Works, which drew inspiration from in-depth conversations with college representatives. “Phoenix [Design Works] really went the extra mile for us,” Beck explained. “It’s really a pride thing for us,” she said. “Our students and staff and the community can wear their new LCCC gear proudly!”

Looking for Pennsylvania’s Secondary Students: 2013-2014 PSA Contest is Underway Submitted by Christine Wentz Camp Hill, PA – The Pennsylvania Department of Drug and Alcohol Programs and Drug Free Pennsylvania are launching, for the 7th year, a statewide contest for middle and high school students. The contest, entitled,“Sound Off! A Drug Prevention Public Service Announcement (PSA) Contest,” will provide an opportunity for youth to send a positive message to their peers and communities that drugs and alcohol do not have to be part of their activities. The theme of this year’s contest is: “Why Say No? Join the Conversation Against Substance Abuse.” With smartphones and tablets, notebooks and personal computers, kids today have a world gone bad, and from this information choices are made; some good, some bad. Many of today’s young people are faced with the dilemma of sorting it out on their own, so it’s up to us as counselors, educators, and parents to help them make smart choices, informed choices, the right choices. The contest is open to all public, private, and home-educated Pennsylvania students in grades 6-12. The winning PSA will be aired on television stations throughout the state as well as on YouTube and the Drug Free PA Facebook page. An award

will be presented to the winning schools during a school assembly. Drug Free Pennsylvania has programs available that provide lessons to help students and adults become more familiar with the dangers of drug and alcohol abuse. The programs also teach students to become critical consumers of the media. The PSA contest is a natural outgrowth of these courses of study; however, participation in the contest is not exclusive to the students who currently participate in one of these programs. Guidelines and registration forms are available at http://medialiteracypa.org/psa-contest. If you have any questions about the contest, please contact Drug Free PA at 717-232-0300 or e-mail psacontest@drugfreepa.org. The deadline for submissions is Feb. 28.

Town & Country Christmas Tree

I love decorating for Christmas and finding ways to add subtle touches to each room of the house without breaking the bank is an especially fun project! This year, I added a Christmas tree to a few rooms made simply from recycled Town & Country Gazettes. Yes, you can use this very newspaper (preferably after you are done reading it) to make a fun holiday decoration. And it won’t cost you a cent!

Step 1

What you will need:

•2 pre-loved Blue Mt. Town & Country Gazette editions (100+ pages) •Scissors •Clear drying glue •Glitter •Spray paint

OFF THE WALL AUTO Specializing in 7.3, 6.0 & 6.4 Powerstroke Diesels IDS, VCM

FORD DIESELS

DIAGNOSTICS & REPAIRS RATE $45/HR

Step 5

This simple tree is a fun project that is quick and easy and completely free using only recycled items (and maybe a little glitter). Steps to ‘trim’ your mini Christmas tree: Step 1: Fold one page at a time so the top corner matches the spine in the middle of the newspaper. Step 2: Press firmly to create a tight crease.

Step 3: Fold each page until all of the pages are folded. Repeat for both editions. Step 4: Carefully cut off the lower portion to create a flat base for your tree. Step 5: Connect the editions by folding them into each other. Spread the pages to create a full tree. Step 6 (optional): Decorate your tree with glitter and/or green craft paint. You can add lightweight pom-poms to the top of your tree or leave them as is. Look for Home Recycled Home crafts every month in the Town & Country Gazette, starting January 2014. Each craft will use items that you may have lying around the house or can easily acquire by asking friends and neighbors. Be sure to check back in the New Year for great crafts that utilize recycled items and add a unique touch to your home!

Extra Point by Tyler Trumbauer

2013: A look back at the graduated, the hired and a unforgettable fall With the year coming to a close, one tends to reflect on the year that was or wasn’t. 2013 had a lot of high hopes when it was rung in in New York City last New Year’s Eve. For some it may have been all that they wanted. For others it was 12 months full of heartbreak. Regardless of your personal mindset towards this year, it is safe to say that a lot happened right here in our own backyard in sports. These last 365 days went by in a blink of an eye, but that eye watched a lot of amazing events unfold. The year started out with high prestige as two seniors made their college choices in January. Northern Lehigh’s Caleb Johnson committed to play football at Harvard University after whittling down his choices to either the Crimson or Princeton University. Johnson experienced great success in his freshman season as he saw action in six games and recorded five tackles and recovered one fumble. Northwestern’s Sara Jones, who is the girls’ basketball all-time leading scorer at her school, committed to the Naval Academy to continue her basketball career. She is a walk-on and expects to grow into a more prominent role on the team while gaining a top-notch education from a highly acclaimed institution. Staying on the hardwood, the Lehighton Indians’s boys’ basketball team experienced one of the quicker turnarounds in recent memory. Before Rich Oertner was hired in June of 2011 the Indians won two games in the previous three seasons. In his inaugural season Oertner and the Indians grew as a program and last year went 11-11, qualified for

districts and notched a postseason victory. Oertner, in just two years, put the Indians back on the map. 2013 also brought some new faces into the local sports world. Lehighton hired a new girls’ basketball coach in Eric Gidney in hopes of copying Oertner’s success, Palmerton hired Leigh Keenan to resurrect their boys’ basketball program, and Northern Lehigh hired Steve Hluschak Jr. to fill the shoes of long-time coach Todd Herzog who resigned earlier this year. While some schools struggled to sniff the playoffs in any sport in the fall season of 2013, Northwestern was knee deep in playoff action in nearly every sport. Both their boys’ and girls’ cross country teams won the District 11 AA championships, the girls also won the Colonial League, and qualified for the state tournaments. The football team went 7-3 in the regular season and won the AA Eastern Conference championship just one year after being 3-7. The Tigers luck was abundant on the pitch as well. Both the boys’ and girls’ soccer teams won the Colonial League championship. The girls’ took district gold as well with the boys’ falling short in the semi-finals. The ladies advanced in the state tournament before losing in the quarterfinals. Individual success occurred in New Tripoli with senior Cole Miller, who verbally committed to Penn State earlier this month, won the Colonial League, District 11 AA, and PIAA East Regional AA boys’ golf championships on his way to a second place finish in the PIAA AA state tournament. Parkland football continued their dominance in the Lehigh Valley Conference and District 11 as the Trojans went 9-1 in the regular season and shared the LVC title with Whitehall. The Trojans won the District 11 AAAA title and lost in the state quarterfinals. Championships were won and lost. Tears were shed and hugs were given. There were jubilant championship parades around towns and long, quiet bus rides home. Some may want to put this year in the past, while others may want to live it again. However, there is one certainty that stems from these chaotic 12 months. Without sports, there’d be no next year.
