From the Editor’s Desk

Joe Korba

As the holidays rapidly approach, and the cliché complaints about Christmas decorations being displayed “earlier and earlier” begin, I can’t help but get those warm and fuzzy feelings that come with the carols, gifts, gatherings of friends and family and all of the other things that come with the season. It seems like people are just friendlier this time of year, with more smiles and cheerful greetings to strangers and acquaintances. In this, my third year working for the Gazette, I’ve come to appreciate all of the tight-knit communities we serve – from Lehighton up north to our southern border of Northampton. They all just seem a little more quaint as Christmas trees are lit and front yards are filled with decorations. It’s important to remember, while shopping for Christmas presents, how small businesses in these towns contribute to the economic health, and more importantly, the distinct character of these communities. I like to think our little paper is part of the culture in our area, and without the help of small business owners, we wouldn’t

have been able to do what we do for almost three decades. So, I’d like to use this opportunity to thank everyone who has supported the Gazette as we look ahead to another great year in 2014. From the neighbors who drop by the office with news and advertising, to larger businesses like all of the local country clubs, restaurants, vineyards, and retailers who support us - a heartfelt expression of gratitude from all of us here. We hope to continue serving you with the professionalism and respect you deserve for many years to come.

We hope you're all enjoying our monthly feature which turns the spotlight on community members who have unique and interesting stories. So far you've met Darin Weidner, volunteer firefighter, and Anthony George, Australian Outback explorer. For December, we introduce you to a high school student with a championship title in drag racing. Meet Jake Marunich.

Meet the Staff It’s shopping season! What’s your strategy for avoiding the chaos and still managing to get everything you need for the loved ones in your life? Danielle Tepper, Publishing Assistant: I love the chaos! After taking a turkey-induced siesta, I hit the mall in my PJs with all the other crazies until the wee hours of Black Friday morning. Whatever I don’t accomplish then gets done on Amazon.com. I’ve also been known to do one last mall trip on Christmas Eve. Because I’m nuts, that’s why. Joe Korba, Associate Publisher: I’d rather get a root canal than set foot in a mall around the holidays. Online shopping is the way to go. Alice Wanamaker, Publishing Assistant: That’s easy—I shop small! I try to buy as many gifts from small businesses as I can. It’s a great way to give back to the local economy and find unique one-of-a-kind items for everyone on my list. Items like specialty roasted coffees, unique handmade crafts and gifts, and gift certificates for spas or nail salons are always great options!

Donna Bachman, Accounting Manager: This year I am keeping things simple for the Christmas holiday shopping season. Cash and gift cards are always welcome from the grown-ups in addition to a small present to open as well. I will be ordering a few things online and heading to the toy store early one weekday to get a few items from the list that my grandsons have done for themselves. Tony Pisco, Art Director: Christmas shopping is very easy for me because my wife takes care of everything. The only person I have to shop for is her and, surprise - she just tells me what she wants me to get her.

Grown in USA

Tyler Trumbauer, Staff Writer: To complete my holiday shopping list, I break it up into different trips over the month of December. I do some shopping online and some in-store and never go out on Black Friday. It’s worked so far! Sheared, Plantation grown EVERGREENS: Douglas, Fraser, Concolor Firs, Serbian & Col. Blue Spruce. Local Dollars For Local Kids

Submitted by Nikol Tews Did you ever wonder what happens at Christmas to less fortunate children in our community? If you would like to contribute toward gifts for kids in our community who would normally go without seeing presents on Christmas morning, please contact Quota of Northampton. We are once again accepting contributions of either new, unwrapped gifts of your own choosing or a financial donation for our club’s “elves” to shop with. Last year we were able to help 45 children in the Northampton school district have a wonderful holiday through the generous donations of individuals and local businesses. We also operate a Christmas store for young clients of the Northampton Food Bank. Each child was able to pick out a gift for every member of their family at no charge. In addition to gifts for children we are looking for small gifts for adults and siblings. We will arrange for the purchase, wrapping and delivery of gifts for kids in our community.

You can access the website on the Northampton Area High School’s site using the quick link on the left side of the high school home page. With the assistance of the high school administrative team, Tara Mrazik, marketing teacher and DECA advisor, first developed the Konkrete Korner in 2009 when the high school renovations allowed for the space needed to house the store. The school store was primarily developed to provide non-athletes with access to Konkrete Kids merchandise. The school store has become successful over the years with the support of the high school students, faculty, staff, and administration. The Konkrete Korner has been open for 5 years now. Tara Mrazik says, “The Konkrete Korner has become an integral part of the High School community. Offering online browsing and purchasing will make it easier for the community to access the Konkrete Korner. We truly appreciate all the support given to the store over the years.” Having taught at NHS for the past 13 years,

Mrazik currently advises the DECA program and teaches the retailing class that contributes significantly to the success of the store. Retailing students design the new merchandise as well as perform the majority of the daily operations. DECA members assist in the daily activities. This year’s students, along with Mrazik, decided to create a website with online purchasing ability for the school store merchandise. Essential Photo courtesy of nasdschools.org in this process was Vice Principal, Ms. Kimberly Levin. Senior Caroline Ferreri created the website and maintains it. Senior Nicole Persa manages the site’s activities and promotions. The online purchases run through Paypal. Items can be picked up at the high school or shipped for a fee. The goal of this website is to make purchasing Northampton merchandise more convenient for the community and increase Konkrete Kid spirit! The high school is very enthusiastic about the website and what it could mean for the Konkrete Kid community. Please visit the website at: http://konkretekorner. weebly.com. Meet Jake Marunich Nominated by his older sister, Payton

By Danielle S. Tepper Jake Marunich was ten years old when he drove his first dragster. Having watched his father as a kid, he knew he’d eventually want his own taste of 130 miles per hour. “We grew up with it,” said Jake of himself and his older sister, Payton. “When we were little, we used to race snowmobiles. We’ve just always been at the racetrack.” Their father, Denny Marunich, raced on and off since his teens/early 20s; he made his own car at 16. Simply by being around it, his kids became interested in the thrill of it all. They received their own car, which they shared, as a surprise Christmas gift from their parents and grandparents. Now they each have their own and racing has become a family event. The Marunich kids both joined the National Hot Rod Association (NHRA), where you’re eligible for Junior Dragster from ages eight to 18. Founded in 1951, the NHRA is “second to only NASCAR, in terms of attendance, fan appeal, and sponsorship commitment” (NHRA.com.) Drag racing isn’t just about who finishes first, however; it’s actually quite technical. “What we do is bracket racing,” explained Jake.

Each bracket usually consists of 25-30 racers in that age range. “You dial in a number and you can’t beat your own time. There are 10 seconds in a quarter mile. The first one across the line without going over their time wins.” “It’s a lot of learning,” said Payton. “People assume it’s a standard race, but it’s not. You can lose by 1/1000th of a second.” Speed isn’t the only factor needed to win; in fact, sometimes racers are required to ease up on the gas from time to time. There’s quite a bit of skill involved, as bracket racing is based on precision. “A better reaction time equals a better jump than the other guy,” explained Jake. “You have to be good at launching, which puts you further down the track even if you leave at the same time. That’s the point of dialing in; you want to beat him by the smallest amount of time without going under yours.” “You bump in in stages,” added Payton. “You leave when the third light comes down. A perfect light is .000. You can’t leave too early or you lose. It’s confusing, but once you know it, you’re good.” Even if speed isn’t the most important factor, it certainly counts. Their half-scale cars are one cylinder and can do half a track in seven seconds. “It’s seriously a souped-up lawn mower engine,” laughed Jake. He’s currently working on building a

full-scale one, the engines for which have about 8,000-10,000 horsepower. (An average car might have 150.) A full dragster can do one lap around the track in four seconds. Wins are based on a point system. Points are gained for every race attended, as well as rounds won. Payton became a champ in 2008, Jake in 2011. With enough points, racers qualify for Divisionals, then Nationals, where “half the country shows up” to watch, according to Jake. The Marunichs race at Numidia Dragway, which is around the Bloomsburg area. What started out as a small track is now the host for the bracket finals. The Marunichs spent practically every weekend there from 2005 on, making it easy to create friendships with fellow racers. “You meet so many people from all around the country at each race,” said Jake. “People will travel the whole weekend just to come to this track, because it’s the nicest location in the area.” Payton added, “A lot of people come for the payout. It’s the home of the guaranteed payout.” “As a Junior Dragster, you’re not really in it for the money, you’re in it for the experience,” said Jake. Jake is a senior this year at Northern Lehigh High School where he plays football, DJs on the side, and dabbles a bit in website design. He’s considering going to college for mechanical engineering, naturally, with a focus on cars. Payton is in her second year of studying Occupational Therapy at Elizabethtown. NAPL receives a Wells Fargo Community Partners Grant

Submitted by Melissa E. Hawk The Northampton Area Public Library has received a $1,000 grant from Wells Fargo’s Community Partners Program. Wells Fargo’s Community Partners Giving Program is an annual program. Every year each of its retail banking stores explores the needs of their local communities and selects a nonprofit organization to receive a $1000 grant. This year Wells Fargo will award close to $300,000 in grants throughout Pennsylvania and Delaware. Library Director Melissa Hawk said, “We are very grateful for this grant and the generosity of Wells Fargo. Their support makes it possible for us to keep offering the community something new.” The library will use the funds for general operating expenses, including support for a new program “Wonderful Ones.” This program will begin in January and is open to parents and caregivers and their one year olds. Call the library at 610-262-7537 for more information.

Pennsylvania Hunters Encouraged to Donate Venison to Help Feed Hungry Submitted by William Nichols Hunters can help feed the more than 1.5 million Pennsylvanians who are at risk for hunger by donating deer meat through Hunters Sharing the Harvest. Hunters Sharing the Harvest helps hunters donate deer that is then processed into ground venison and distributed by Pennsylvania food banks, soup kitchens and pantries. “Hunger is a reality for more than 600,000 Pennsylvania families who wonder how they’ll find their next meal,” Agriculture Secretary George Greig said today during an event to kick off the program at Diller’s Custom Deer Processing in Enola, Cumberland County. “I encourage all hunters to donate venison this holiday season.” Hunters can take their deer to one of 90 participating meat processors throughout the state and donate any amount of their venison to the program – from several pounds to the whole animal. Any hunter donating an entire deer is asked to make a minimum $15 tax-deductible contribution to help cover processing costs. The program covers all remaining fees. The Department of Agriculture, through the

federal Emergency Food Assistance Program, contributes $1.25 per pound of donated venison to reimburse processors. “Venison is a great low-fat, high-protein meat product that is highly desired by the families we serve,” said Joe Arthur, executive director of the Central Pennsylvania Food Bank. “Through Hunters Sharing the Harvest we are able to provide this center-of-the-plate protein that provides great nutritional value to families and individuals struggling with hunger.” This year CONSOL Energy will donate $1 to the program for each limited edition camouflage baseball cap sold through the end of hunting season. Caps may be ordered at www. consolhuntershat.com. CONSOL Energy is also underwriting the processing costs for donated deer at approved meat processors in Allegheny, Fayette, Greene, Washington and Westmoreland counties. “By working with CONSOL Energy, the department, Hunger-Free Pennsylvania food banks and other partners, Hunters Sharing the Harvest can do even more for our neighbors in need,” said John Plowman, executive director of Hunters Sharing the Harvest. “We look forward to reaching more families who need help even more effectively.” Established in 1991, Hunters Sharing the Harvest today covers 53 participating counties and provides more than 750,000 meals annually to food banks, churches and social service feeding programs. Last year, hunters donated nearly 100,000 pounds of venison to more than 4,000 emergency food assistance agencies through the state’s 21 regional food banks. To learn more about the program or to obtain a list of participating meat processors, visit www. sharedeer.org, or call toll-free 866-474-2141.

Fuzzy

Bichon Frise • Adult • Female • Small Peaceable Kingdom, Whitehall Meet Fuzzy! She is a sweet 7-year-old Bichon Frise. This sweet girl was rescued from a puppy mill. She is great with dog and kids; a super quiet girl that rarely barks. She'd prefer a home that’s calm and likes to cuddle and relax her days away. Fuzzy has a stuffed toy that goes everywhere with her and she's quite protective of her little toy friend. She had a rough start to life and is missing most of her teeth. She's left that all behind and is looking forward to her next adventure. Fuzzy needs a home that will be patient with her potty training; she will go outside but because of her puppy mill past, she does have accidents. Come meet the cutest little girl ever! Adoptions are held every Saturday from 10-3 (1049 Macarthur Road in Whitehall). For more information, please email pk.dogadoptions@gmail.com or call 610-597-2193.

in their public schools and engaged in additional projects, as volunteers, to serve the youth in their communities. The chapter members also increased their giving of monies to assist school retirees who are hospitalized, homebound, or confined in assisted living facilities, and they devoted much of their time engaged in efforts to combat and alleviate hunger in their communities. Additionally, the school retiree volunteers in Northampton County received top honors for their work in providing a broad array of social opportunities for members and for expanding and improving the information that they regularly provide to both members and nonmembers of the association. The association was pleased to note that no other local organization received a greater number of awards this year, enabling Northampton members to claim the distinction of being a “three-star chapter”—only one of seven statewide. In addition, of PASR’s 76 chapters around the country, only two chapters achieved two-star status, and only 11 chapters attained one-star recognition. PASR’s Executive Director Richard C. Rowland commended Northampton Chapter for its accomplishments: “Our organization’s mission, to serve others in need and help one another enjoy retirement, is clearly in your hearts. You are certainly benefiting your communities with all

that you are doing to serve the needs of public education employees, the youth, the infirmed, and the hungry. We all know that in doing these great things, you are helping each other better enjoy the retirements you earned from your public school service.” For more information about Northampton Chapter and the many services this exceptional chapter provides, please contact Chapter President Ruby A. Ifkowitz at drifko@ptd.net or at 610-767-1494.

What A Girl Wants For Christmas The Santa Claus at the shopping mall was very surprised when Emily, a young lady around 20 years old walked up and sat on his lap. Now, we all know that Santa doesn’t usually take requests from adults, but she smiled very nicely at him, so he asked her, “What do you want for Christmas?” “Something for my mother, please,” replied Emily sweetly. “Something for your mother? Well, that’s very loving and thoughtful of you,” smiled Santa. “What do would you like me to bring her?” Without turning a hair, Emily answered quickly, “A son-in-law.”

Spread the Good Word New Church Available in Northampton County

Submitted by Chris Sweifel Radiant Church was created with unchurched people in mind. Radiant's Pastor, Rev. Rob Zweifel, wants it to be a place that unchurched people love to attend. What does he mean by "unchurched?" "Many people have given up on church, but they haven't given up on God," Zweifel says. "My heart's desire is to let those people know that God hasn't given up on them. My calling is to provide an atmosphere that is warm and inviting, to teach the values, principles and truths in the Bible, and to help people apply them to their lives." A comfortable, relaxing setting was important to Zweifel and his team that is helping to plant this church. They found this setting at Regal Cinema. "Regal Entertainment Group is a pleasure to work with. They even go as far as providing resources to help us operate a portable church," Zweifel said. Sunday morning worship services will be held at Regal Cinema, 3720 Easton-Nazareth Highway,

Easton. Services begin at 9:30 a.m.; doors open at 8:30 a.m. Four-week series "The Most Important Thing" began in November. Home groups are to begin in January. Zweifel explained that, "In these groups, the Bible teaching from the service will be reviewed and further applied, life experiences will be shared, and strong relationships will be built." Church Services at Covenant United Methodist Church in Klecknersville Submitted by Jackie Mohman Covenant United Methodist Church invites the community to join weekly services; contemporary service is held at 8 a.m., traditional worship service is at 10:30 a.m. and Sunday School for all ages is held at 9:15 a.m. If you and/or your children would like to attend, but do not have transportation, please contact the church office at 610-837-7517 between 9-12 a.m., Mon.-Thurs. to give your information so that Covenant can arrange transportation to and from the church for you and/or your children.

Winter is a beautiful season if you can get past the biting cold, treacherous black ice, and holiday traffic. On the days where you can simply enjoy it for what it is, there’s nothing better than relaxing by the fire with a good book and a steaming mug of hot chocolate while the snow drifts lazily to the ground outside. Even though we haven’t yet reached the depth of the frigid months ahead, it’s fun to look forward to all the ways to have fun (while freezing) during winter! —Danielle Tepper

Step 1: Keep Warm Winter fashion is all about the layers. (No such thing as too many sweaters, am I right?) But with all those fashionable scarves and boots burning a hole in your wallet, you might be looking for something cute and cheap to keep yourself toasty. Get ready to get crafty with these DIY accessories.

• Bow Headband:

Take a pair of thick woolen tights and cut both legs in the middle that measure the width of your head. Cut another piece 10 cm wide. Lay each long piece flat, and then fold them in to meet in the middle. Slip one side into the other and fold the outside edge in for a neat hem. Hand stitch or machine sew it in place. Repeat with other head-sized piece of material so that you have two headbands. Place one on top of the other, seams together in the middle. Pinch the top headband and top layer of bottom headband to create a bow. Take the smaller piece of tights and fold in both edges to make it look neat. Place it on your pinched bow and pull both edges to the back to create the middle of your bow. Stitch together at the back.

• Sweater Mittens:

Flip an old thick sweater inside out. Put your hand on the sweater to measure how big it should be and use chalk to trace around. Make sure to make it slightly bigger to allow room to sew. Cut out the mitten shape. Trace this shape on the other part of the sweater, so that the gloves are equal and cut. Sew together around the edges. Flip the glove back right side out. (H/T BuzzFeed)

Step 2: Hunker Down Grab your blankets and your chilly little children and snuggle up for a snow day afternoon with these animated wintry kids’ films. Frozen (2013): The latest adorable adventure from Disney Bambi (1942): masterminds, this is the tale of Parents will remember “fearless optimist Anna [who] teams the delightful scene up with Kristoff in an epic journey, where Bambi encounters encountering Everest-like conditions, ice for the first time. and a hilarious snowman named Olaf in a race to find Anna’s sister Elsa, 101 Dalmatians whose icy powers have trapped the (1961): The dogs’ kingdom in eternal winter.” (IMDb. long trek through the com) The flick hit theaters Nov. 27. snow is one of the best Check your local listings for show in this classic tail, er, times and ticket info. tale.

Ice Age (2002): A band of misfits joins together to survive a natural disaster. Happy Feet (2006): Everyone’s favorite dancing penguin can’t sing, but he can move—move humans to love penguins, that is.

Step 3: Drink Up Let’s toast to the delightfully delicious drink recipes that make the rounds this time of year. When the seasonal blues kick in, use these for your 21+ pick-me-ups:

Spiced Pumpkin Cider (For 2)

• 1 cup pumpkin puree • 2.5 cups apple cider • 1/3 cup spiced rum • 1-1/2 teaspoons pumpkin pie spice • 1 cinnamon stick In a large pot, mix together the pumpkin puree, apple cider, pumpkin pie spice and the cinnamon stick. Bring mixture to a boil, and then reduce heat to low and simmer for at least 20 minutes. If mixture is too thick, add additional cider or water to thin it out. Strain the mixture through a mesh strainer to remove clumps and cinnamon stick. Add rum and mix. Serve warm.

Gingered Cider Hot Toddy (For 1)

• 2 cups apple cider • 1 bag of tea (flavor of choice) • 1 tbsp honey • 1/8 tsp ginger • 1 slice of lemon • 1 cinnamon stick • 1 shot spirit of choice Microwave the cider in a mug until hot. Steep tea bag in cider for 3-5 minutes. Add in honey and ginger. Stir with cinnamon stick. Leave it in afterward. Add shot of spirit. Top with lemon slice. Winter Sangria (Serves 4) • 1 large navel orange, sliced • 1 large apple, chopped • 1 large pear, chopped • Arils of 1 pomegranate • 2 cinnamon sticks • 1.5 bottles red wine • 2 cups sparkling pomegranate soda • 1/2 cup brandy • 1/2 cup sugar • 1 tablespoon vanilla extract Add orange slices, apples, pears, cinnamon sticks and pomegranate arils to the bottom of a big pitcher. Pour wine, pomegranate soda, brandy, sugar and vanilla extract over top. Mix well. Refrigerate approximately 1 hour before serving. (H/T BuzzFeed)

PRAYER

May the Sacred Heart of Jesus be adored, glorified, loved and preserved throughout the world now and forever. Sacred heart of Jesus, pray for us. St. Jude, worker of miracles, pray for us. St. Jude, help of the hopeless, pray for us. Say this prayer nine times a day, by the eighth day your prayer will be answered. Thank you, St. Jude, for this prayer has never been known to fail. Publication must be promised. Thank You. (B.S.) (12/5)

Touch of Dutch Schtilli Nacht! Heilichi Nacht! Sell kommt neegscht dohin. Denn hawwich gedenkt, as verleicht ich em Mohr sei Leid en bissel iwwersetze kann in unser Deitsch. Awwer ich weess yuscht en wennichi Hochdeitsch; so wie kann mer saage, „It was an adventure!“ in Deitsch? Ich hab in Waddebicher un Grammarbicher neigeguckt

un was ich zammegeduh hab, kennt dihr’s lese unnich der Englisch Iwwersetzing. Sei so gut, loss mich wisse, eb’s gemechlicher gemacht hot fer die Hochdeitsch verschteh, odder dihr meh verhuddelt warre sin. [The Christmas carol, Silent Night, was created by Joseph Mohr, a Catholic priest, in 1816, and it was written in High German. Two years later his friend, Franz Gruber, composed the melody. The carol was first sung on Christmas eve that year in Joseph Mohr’s church at Oberndorf bei Salzburg, Austria. I will include three verses, the first, the sixth, and the second, of Joseph Mohr’s High German here. (I chose them because those three verses, in that order, were translated by John F. Young, to create our English version.) The Silent Night Society, which today is also in Oberndorf, translated Mohr’s carol into English, but just for the [literal] meaning, not metrically. Their translation will follow the High German. Then I thought that perhaps I could do some translating of Mohr’s German into our Dutch. But I know just a little Std German; so how can one say, “It was an adventure!” in Dutch? I looked in dictionaries and grammar books, and what I put together, follows the English translation. Please let me know if that made it easier to understand the High German or if you became more confused.]

Sock Snowmen

The holiday season is a great time to spend an afternoon creating home décor for you and your family. These cute sock snowmen are a perfect way to reuse socks whose pair is lost and gone forever. The decorations include other items that you may have around the house or can acquire with just a few dollars. Plus, they are easy and fun to make and share!

What you will need:

White tube sock Old pillow stuffing Uncooked white rice Handful of rubber bands Items for eyes, nose and mouth such as push pins, cotton balls, or construction paper Colorful ribbon or argyle sock for a scarf and hat Buttons of various colors and sizes Sewing material Hot glue gun Markers The above list of items are suggestions to get you started on making your one-of-a-kind snowman. You can choose items that you already have such as fabric scraps, buttons, hair ties, and ribbon to decorate your snowman. Steps to building your snowman: Step 1: Turn the sock inside-out, the texture will make your snowman look more authentic. Step 2: Fill the lower portion of the sock with rice. Ensure that the lower portion of snowman is being filled so he is good and rotund when complete.

Step 3: Secure rice and lower portion of snowman with a rubber band. Step 4: Fill the upper portion with pillow stuffing or sock to create the head. Secure the upper portion with another rubber band. Step 5: Create the hat by folding the remaining portion of the sock. You may need to cut excess sock. You may also use an argyle sock top for a beanie. Step 6: Sew or glue buttons down the middle of your snowman. Tie a strip of fabric scrap or ribbon around the first rubber band, creating a scarf. Step 7: Use pom poms, pins or markers to create your snowman’s face. You can dress up your snowman by giving him arms and hands, embellishments on his hat or scarf, and small presents or toys. Creating a village of snowmen is easy and fun when you gather the family for this fun craft using recycled items you have around the house! Look for Home Recycled Home crafts each month in the Town & Country Gazette, starting January 2014. Each craft will use items that you may have lying around the house or can easily acquire by asking friends and neighbors. Lehigh Elementary hosts 4th Grandparents’ Social raffle and a rousing round of bingo. “It’s always nice to see the kids talking with and serving their grandparents,” said Kate Erdosy, also a fifth grade teacher. “It’s especially heartwarming for those kids who don’t have anyone to invite ‘adopting’ a grandparent for the day.” If the smiles were any indication, the event was a success.

Eugene H. By Danielle Tepper Lehigh Elementary in Walnutport hosted its fourth annual Grandparents Day Social on Thursday, Nov. 21. Their multi-purpose room was packed with fifth graders and their parents’ parents for a morning of refreshments and bingo. The event was an idea from teacher Mike Frohnheiser, who began it as a way for the students to “get a better appreciation for the older members of our community,” he said. “And what better choice than grandparents?” He added,“Plus, bringing the grandparents into the school allows them to see the changes that have happened since they were in school.” During the welcome address, the grandparents were told that it was time for the students to wait on them hand-and-foot for whatever they wanted. The students ran back and forth to the refreshment table, then sat and chatted with their relatives over plates of baked goods. “I think the biggest thing the kids see is the grandparents’ happiness at being able to spend a little bit of time with them in the school setting,” said Frohnheiser. The hour and a half hangout also included a

2013 Boys’ Basketball Preview

Northwestern- The Northwestern boys’ basketball program has been slowly rebuilding since the Dan Eddinger era began two years ago as the Tigers won two games his first year and seven games last winter. They hope to increase that total this year, but without much experience it will be tough. “We are really only returning three players from last year who saw significant time,” said Dan Eddinger. “So in the beginning we are going to be a really young and inexperienced team. Obviously that creates question marks.” This team also lacks size which will be a major issue in close games. This program is certainly on the upswing and should get better this winter, but any postseason play may be just a year or two off. Parkland- Parkland basketball has been one of the elite in the Lehigh Valley Conference and District 11 the last few years as the Trojans ended 2012 with 22 total wins, a District 11 4A title and one state playoff game win. They lost leader Austin Beidelman to graduation, but return the rest of their starting lineup. “We have a good deal of experience coming back and also the young guys coming up are good players,” said

Page 55

sixth year head coach Andy Stephens. “We have some height and some real talented kids that are gym rats. The younger guys are going to push the older guys which will make for some great practices and hopefully a successful season.” Parkland will need a new leader to emerge from the likes of Jimmy Hahn, Nick Rindock and Justin Zajko, who are all returning seniors. The Trojans will be right in the thick of things for the league and district title as part of their postseason run that may include a berth in the state tournament if this team finds good chemistry on this deep squad. Northampton- The K-Kids’ boys’ basketball program is in the middle of a rebuilding process. They are coming off a 2012 campaign that included just three wins overall. Northampton was one of the last teams remaining in the summer’s Stellar basketball tournament which was a good sign for them. “We want improvement as far as fundamentals and with team chemistry,” said second year head coach Coy Stampone about 2013. “It isn’t just wins and losses. I want to see improvement and more intensity within the culture of the program. Wins would be nice, but other things build a program.” This program has had only one winning season in the last five years. Stampone will have height on his team with multiple returners measuring over six feet tall. However, this team may not be able to measure up to the best of the Lehigh Valley Conference and fall short of bucking that losing trend this winter.

Northern Lehigh- The Bulldogs are entering 2013 with a chip on their shoulder, albeit it a shorter shoulder. Northern Lehigh finished the regular season 14-8 and earned a home district playoff game against Tamaqua, but was upended by the Raiders and eliminated earlier than expected. They also lost big men Lucas Pierce, Caleb Johnson and Josh Eden to graduation in the spring. Senior guard Tyler Dibilo talked about the new look NL will take on. “We’re looking at more of a fast paced type of game this year...we’re working more on our transition offense and our man to man defensive pressure.” Returning with Dibilio is starting point guard senior Matt Egan who will be a big factor in how this team fares this winter. Losing their size will be a big hit for the Bulldogs, one that they may not be able to overcome. The Bulldogs won’t fall to the basement of the Colonial League or District 11, but they will fade out of the spotlight and quite possibly may be at home when the playoffs get underway. Lehighton- Lehighton is a program that has climbed out of the District 11 basement thanks in large part to head coach Rich Oertner, who is entering his third year. Last winter the Indians finished 11-11 and qualified for

the 3A district tournament where they beat Southern Lehigh, but then were ousted by Pottsville. The Indians are returning four of their five starters from that district qualifying team, but leader Tyler Crum was injured in a preseason scrimmage and, according to Oertner, will be sideline for a while heading in to the season. Oertner is concerned about his team, but believes they will be competitive again this season. “I think we will be the same as last season as far as goal wise,” Oertner said. “We want to be in districts and I think we will be competitive. I don’t know how much farther than that we will go.” Lehighton’s defense, as of now, scares Oertner, but he likes their offensive abilities. They will need to patch up the defense if they want to earn enough victories in a tough Mountain Valley Conference and District 11 to qualify for the postseason, which is very plausible. Palmerton- Palmerton is coming off a 2012 season where they lost not only 21 games, but their head coach as well. Enter Leigh Keenan in the offseason to take over a program that has struggled to get even close to a .500 record in recent seasons. The Blue Bombers lost a good amount of seniors to graduation in the spring that held the most experience on the club. The youthfulness and newness of a first year head coach won’t bode well for Palmerton this season as they will fight hard again to earn a few victories and continue to build this program. Down the road, Palmerton may return again, but not now.
