From the Publisher’s Desk
Joe Korba
I’m watching “The Big Game” preshow as I write this and I’m struck by how silly and how often reporters and advertisers are forced to refer to the big game as thus, because of copyright laws and overzealous National Football League lawyers. I prefer comedian Stephen Colbert’s nomenclature to get around the trademark: “Superb owl.” Regardless, I hope Seattle wins it this year. Welcome to our annual Romance issue. We hope you find some romantic ideas and maybe check out some of your local businesses for a nice meal with your significant other or maybe some flowers or chocolates. I know I always wait until the last minute ... Also, remember if you want to stop by and say hello, we are in our new space at 255E South Best Avenue in Walnutport. It’s off of Route 145, kind of across from the Walnutport Post Office. As always, I hope you enjoy this edition.

Northampton Area Public Library News
Submitted by KAREN HEIN Our staff has been hard at work finding new programs to offer our patrons, as well as tried and true programs that are always a draw. We will be holding a program entitled “Remembering Hess’s” on Monday, Feb. 23 at 6 p.m. A documentary about the famous department store will be shown and we will have some memorabilia on display. Come join us for a bit of nostalgia and share your memories of this famous Lehigh Valley landmark. For more info or to register for the program, call the library. Snow date is March 2. Game days are now held in our community room every other month and are open to the public. There are some board games and cards available, but feel free to bring your own. Check our website or call the library to find out the date of our next one. We have received notice from the IRS that they will no longer supply tax form outlets with the instruction booklets for Forms 1040, 1040A and 1040EZ. You can obtain these booklets through irs. gov/forms or irs.gov/orderforms. There has been a delay in their shipment of forms .

Meet the Staff The start of a new year is the time to look forward to what’s ahead in the upcoming months. What special events or trips are you most excited for in 2015? Joe Korba, Associate Publisher: I’m most looking forward to my Caribbean cruise in July. I can’t wait to finally visit Jamaica! Danielle Tepper, Editor: Plans for the year are sparse yet, but Cat and I are headed to a Maroon 5 concert in March (woo!) and I’m sailing Royal Caribbean’s Liberty of the Seas in June with my family: Puerto Rico, Bermuda, St. Maarten, and Haiti. It’s going to be amazing! Catherine Stroh, Publishing Assistant: In March, I will be attending my very first concert ever—Maroon 5! I’m very excited to be in the same room as Adam Levine and possibly get some snazzy band merchandise. Other than that, I don’t really go on vacation, so I’m just looking forward to warmer weather and longer days to be able to appreciate the outdoors a little bit more.

“Largest Indoor Sportsman Show in the Lehigh Valley”
Tony Pisco, Art Director: Last year, my wife surprised me with a trip to Disney World. I’m not sure what she has planned this year, but if she needs any ideas, I would suggest either St. Bart’s or Cozumel. Alice Wanamaker, Editorial Assistant: I am looking forward to visiting my friends in Texas in April for an annual benefit show that raises money for a summer camp designed for children who are battling cancer. It will be a great time for a great cause! Donna Bachman, Accounting Manager: Looking forward to the warm summer months once again. Visits to the shore, amusement parks, and relaxation at home.

Provident Bank Foundation Offers $16K Grant To Sacred Heart
(L-R) June Webre, Regional President, Provident Bank; John Nespoli, President and Chief Executive Officer, Sacred Heart Hospital; Jane Kurek, Executive Director, The Provident Bank Foundation; and Angela Long, Vice President, nursing, surgical, and emergency services, Sacred Heart Hospital. Submitted by BRYAN HYLAND The Provident Bank Foundation, (http:// providentnjfoundation.org), which supports organizations that are dedicated to improving the lives of residents in the communities served by Provident Bank, has provided a $16,000 grant to Sacred Heart Foundation in support of “Come Home to Your Heart: The Campaign for Sacred Heart Hospital.” The grant will enable the hospital to expand their personalized homelike environment through facility upgrades, enhance the BirthPlace for new mothers, and increase leading-edge surgical technology in operating rooms. “We are proud to provide Sacred Heart Foundation with necessary funds to support the hospital’s efforts to deliver a patient-centered model of care to the LehighValley community,” said Jane Kurek, executive director of The Provident Bank Foundation. “We are so grateful for the support of The Provident Bank Foundation. Their very generous contribution will go directly to our efforts to humanize and de-institutionalize care by creating environments that feel more homelike and touch all the senses in a positive and inspirational fashion,”said John Nespoli, president

Foil Valentines
For some reason throughout elementary school, these foil valentines were the ultimate must-have to pass out in school. They always had to be cool and could never be something nerdy, since everybody in the class would be receiving one. Luckily, all of our parents cooperated and would buy them for us, otherwise there would be no Valentines to pass out.—CS
Did you know? • Valentine’s Day is believed to have begun in 270 AD. Bishop Valentine was jailed for performing weddings against the Roman Emperor Claudius II’s wishes. During his jail time, Valentine wrote a love note to the jailor’s daughter, signing it, “From your Valentine.” • In Medieval times, girls would eat unusual foods on St. Valentine’s Day to make them dream of their future husband. • In the Middle Ages, young men and women would draw names from a bowl to see who their Valentines would be. They would then wear the names on their sleeves for a week. Hence the saying we have today of “wearing your heart on your sleeve.” • Every Valentine’s Day, the Italian city of Verona (where Romeo and Juliet lived) receives about 1,000 letters addressed to Juliet. • Cupid, the Roman God of Love, has become a very common symbol for Valentine’s Day. He was originally depicted as a young man who would sharpen his famous arrow on a grindstone with blood from an infant. During the Victorian era, business owners wanted to promote Valentine’s Day as more suitable to women and children, thus bringing us to the pudgy baby Cupid version we are familiar with today. • Hallmark produced its first Valentine in 1913. Today, teachers receive the most Valentines. • Around nine million pet owners buy gifts for their precious pooches each year for Valentine’s Day.
Dove Chocolate
When thinking of Valentine’s Day, I think of Valentines and chocolate. My go-to chocolate is Dove on the rare times I am craving it. It is actually heaven in a bag and in my opinion, the best chocolate out there. Hershey has nothing on Dove.—CS
Elderly Couples
Romance is timeless, right? I love catching a glimpse of a senior couple holding hands. I remember walking through the balloon festival a few years ago and I spied a man and woman whom I imagine have been together longer than I have been alive. They were carefully walking through the grass holding one another’s hand. He was there to support her when she needed and she was there for him, even though she never let on to it! Elderly couples who love one another always bring out my romantic side.—AW

Lost Dog
I don’t watch football, so the only parts of the Super Bowl that interest me are the commercials and the halftime show. And if said commercials feature some cute and fuzzy critters, even better. Budweiser, long known for frogs, ferrets, and the classic Clydesdales, have recently found that nothing accompanies a beautiful horse better than an adorable puppy. We met the #BestBuds during last year’s Super Bowl commercial: a litter of little labs was being sold close to the horses’ farm and one spunky pup in particular bonded with the gentle giants. So the hunky horse guy brought him home and the horse and pup forged a friendship for the advertising age. This year, the little guy sees his horse friend getting packed up for a trip and decides to tag along, but gets terribly lost in the process. Set to a heart-wrenching rendition of “I'm Gonna Be (500 Miles)” performed by Sleeping At Last, the 60-second spot chronicles his journey home. I don’t know why this is supposed to make me want to drink Budweiser, but maybe they should consider selling travel packs of tissues with their 6-packs. View the commercial on our website at www.townandcountrygazette.com.

Don’t let chronic pain keep you off the slopes this winter. Schedule an appointment today! Directions
Whisk together eggs, milk, cream, orange juice, vanilla, cognac, sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg, and a pinch of salt. Place bread in two shallow dishes in single layer. Pour egg mixture over bread, soak ten minutes. While bread is soaking, preheat grill to medium. Place a flat cast-iron skillet on grill. Brush bananas with butter, cook in skillet until they are browned on all sides, releasing juices, about three minutes. Use spatula to transfer bananas to a plate, wipe skillet clean. Slice bananas. Remove bread from egg mixture and allow excess to drip off. Place on cutting board, top with banana slices, then cover with another slice of bread. Brush skillet on grill lightly with vegetable oil. Add sandwich to pan, place a grill press or heavy pan over sandwich to weigh down. Cook until the bread is toasted and golden, 3 to 4 minutes each side. Repeat with each sandwich, top with powdered sugar and syrup. I had high hopes for this recipe in the beginning. It sounds delicious, right? I took the opportunity to break out my panini press and got right to work in destroying them. I made the mistake of not allowing the egg mixture to completely drip off of the bread before placing it in my press. Between the excess egg mixture and the juicy banana pieces, my French toast was a gooey mess. I cooked them a great deal longer than 3 to 4 minutes on each side, and although the tops were browned, the gooey-ness remained in the middle of the panini. I did make a few pieces of French toast minus the bananas which turned out a little bit better than the actual sandwiches. Maybe under different circumstances they could have been tastier, however due to the thick and heavy ingredients, I was disgusted with myself for consuming them afterwards.

badger. And what does the badger have to do with anything here? Well, the badger is something like the groundhog; it has short heavy legs and long claws, with which it can dig deep in the ground. And in winter it hibernates down there in the ground, just like the groundhog. Do you know, dear people, that Candlemas falls on the second of February? And what does Candlemas have to do with anything here? Well for ages our ancestors in Germany paid good attention to whether the badger would slip out of its hole and would see its shadow. And you can imagine exactly when the badger crawled out. Yes, certainly, on the second of February! [Badger day and similar pre-Christian midwinter festivities predated ‘Candle Mass’ or ‘Feast of the Purification of Mary’ as that day was also called. With the advent of Candlemas Day, early Christians had an alternative to the traditional pagan festivities of their times.] When our ancestors came over to America from Germany, they did not find a badger like those back home. But naturally they found the groundhog over here. Just like the badger, the groundhog spent the winter in the ground. Of course it had to come out of the ground again some time. How long can one sleep without eating something once? And do you know, dear people, when the groundhog comes out

of its hole? Yes, tell me, how lucky can one be? But one must always take the bad with the good. In Germany they have just four more weeks of winter, if the badger sees its shadow. Over here we have six more weeks of winter weather. The Old Professor [Earl Haag’s pen name] believes that we are not doing something right. John Birmelin [the Pennsylvania Dutch poet] could remember when Groundhog Day was called Badger Day. [He wrote a poem, “D iss fer Dax” (D/B is for Dax/Badger), but it’s too long to include here.] [Earl C. Haag is a retired professor of German, Pennsylvania German and English Composition at Penn State, Schuylkill Campus. He authored A Pennsylvania German Reader and Grammar and edited A Pennsylvania German Anthology, as well as other publications relating to the grammar and culture of the Pennsylvania Dutch. He also wrote a weekly dialect column, “Es Neinuhr Schtick” (nine o’clock snack/break for farm workers). For over 26 years, that column was published in several newspapers in Schuylkill County. This article first appeared in that column.] -Larry Gradwohl

1. You’ve Got Mail | 1998
More V-Day Clichés I’ve been single a while, but I don’t bow my head in shame when I say the word like most girls do. It’s a choice I made quite a few years ago to not tie myself down when I am undoubtedly still slugging through the best years of my life. I love knowing that I can pick up and move to a new state if an opportunity presents itself without worrying about who I’ll be leaving behind. I can go where I want when I want without having to check in with someone. It’s either a selfish or smart way to live. I choose to think it’s smart. In college, my friends and I were too wrapped up in throwing epic parties to even bother finding significant others. This suited us just fine. I love looking back at my college days knowing I made the absolute most of those four short years without someone holding me back from doing whatever my heart desired in any given moment. It was liberating, and when it finally came to an end, I had a sinking suspicion that the career I was trying so desperately to launch would ultimately be my top priority over finding a date for Friday nights. Online dating? Noooo, thank you. The few horrifying hits I got from my first foray into that nightmare turned me off the whole thing pretty strongly, even though I have friends who have found boyfriends, fiancés, and husbands on sites like OK Cupid, Plenty of Fish, Match, eHarmony, etc. I still have time. I’m not worried. Anyway, whether single by choice or by circumstance, V-Day is still a tough one for us single ladies to grin and bear each year. (My fellow single girlfriends and I are planning a night out this year—tearing up a dance floor, drink in hand, sounds like the perfect escape from the sight of the chocolate boxes and red roses that pop up everywhere.) I expressed my disdain for this holiday last year with a look at three of my favorite romance movies to drown my sorrows in—and since my outlook hasn’t changed in the past 365 days, here we go again with three more movies.
I adore Meg Ryan and Tom Hanks together. While I also love Sleepless in Seattle, they spend barely a fraction of screen time together in that film. In You’ve Got Mail, they both sell books (love) in New York City (love more). It’s full of swoon-worthy quotes for nredy readers/ writers like me, such as, “I would send you a bouquet of newly sharpened pencils if I knew your name and address.” I love that two would-be-star-crossed lovers come together in perfect serendipity. Also, my next golden will be named Brinkley.
2. Penelope | 2006
This is a love/hate film for people. I am completely crazy about it, but I’ve shown it to friends who think it’s one of the stupidest things they’ve ever seen. The movie plays like a fairytale, with Penelope (Christina Ricci) being cursed with the nose of a pig and follows her quest to find love and break the spell. Peter Dinklage and Reese Witherspoon also star, but the main attraction (for me) is the ever-adorable James McAvoy who falls for her and helps her realize the only love she really needs is the kind that comes from within.
3. Crazy Stupid Love | 2011
Touted as one of the smartest rom-coms of this era, this film turns your expectations on their head and delivers a witty, poignant, and hilarious romantic movie. Perfectly casted, it weaves the storylines of one family with some new connections and brings them together at the end with one hell of a side-splitting twist. I love Steve Carell, Ryan Gosling, and Emma Stone, so seeing them all in one film is always a plus. And yeah, it pushes the importance of soulmates, but it’s done so well that I don’t mind. For clips from all three films, visit www.townandcountrygazette.com.

NAHS Streak Challenge
Submitted by ANN SAVKOVA Everyone is encouraged to join with Northampton Area High School students past and present to honor Mr. Kim Davis at the Streak Challenge Tuesday, Feb. 10 from 6 to 8:30 p.m. in the high school cafeteria. (Snow date Wednesday, Feb. 11.) Unlike streaking in the ‘70s, the Streak Challenge invites young and old alike to join in a celebration which honors Kim Davis, a more than 30-year veteran teacher and lifelong resident of Northampton, and others like him in their battle against lymphoma. A portion of the proceeds from the event will benefit the special needs of the pediatric cancer hospice patients within the Lehigh Valley Hospital Network. Staffed by students and staff of the high school, the event will feature the Bryant Brothers Band, a classic rock group popular in the Lehigh Valley, along with a bake sale and family friendly activities. The Streak Challenge is $10 for students or $15 for adults. You can buy a lime green streak for your hair—just as pink is the symbol of hope for breast cancer and purple is for pancreatic cancer, lime green is the color of hope for lymphoma patients. Two streaks are $15 for students and $20 for adults. Individuals wishing to contribute but unable to attend can send donations made out to LVHN/Hospice Fund to Linda Deurer, 6112 Creek Road, Slatington, PA 18080.

Robert A. Hawke Announces Bid for Reelection Robert A. Hawke, a veteran Magisterial District Judge, (MDJ), is announcing that he is seeking reelection for the MDJ position for District Court 03-3-01. MDJ Hawke has 31 years of court experience throughout his career and has been a dedicated and successful MDJ in Northampton Court for the past five years. Since taking office in 2010, MDJ Hawke has been involved in multiple associations. He was elected to serve on the Special Court Judges Association of Pennsylvania’s Vehicle Code Committee from 2012 to the present. He was also elected to serve on the Special Court Judges Association of Pennsylvania Legislative Committee, from 2013 to the present, where he currently serves as vice chairman. MDJ Hawke has served as president in 2011 for the Northampton County MDJ Association. Since 2010, he became a member of the District 10 Judges Association where he currently serves as vice president. Robert A. Hawke began his career in 1984 as a police office in Lehigh Township. Hawke served for 10 years on the Lehigh Valley Regional DUI Task Force, for which he received an award in 1998 from the PA DUI Association that states, “...dedicated to the Sobriety Checkpoint program of Lehigh Township, in recognition and appreciation of your untiring efforts and dedication in the battle against impaired driving.” Hawke was a detective by the time he retired from the Lehigh Township Police Department in 2010. In 2002, Hawke was awarded “The Chapel of Four Chaplains Legion of Honor Award” in recognition of his service to all people regardless of their race or creed. This is Hawke’s second campaign for elected office. He has strong views about responsibilities imposed on the persons who appear before him in his court. “I believe the best way to be reelected is to consistently execute the Magisterial District Judge’s responsibilities to uphold the law with fairness and unbiased decisions.” Hawke, 54, attended Kutztown University, graduating in 1983 with a bachelor’s degree in Criminal Justice with a minor in science. He resides with his wife and two children in Lehigh Township. Committee to re-elect Robert A. Hawke

February Is For Wine & Chocolate Lovers: Galen Glen Winery Celebrates 20 Years
Submitted by KATHLEEN MATSON 2015 is Galen Glen Winery's 20th Anniversary. To celebrate, the winery staff will be offering something special for winery visitors each month. In February, they will be sharing their love of wine and chocolate with a special pairing. All visitors 21 years of age or older can purchase their “Triple Treat” special of three ounces of raspberry wine and three hand-crafted chocolate truffles from Chocolatier Steve Evans of Lancaster. Winemaker Sarah Troxell states, “Raspberries are Galen's favorite fruit and this wine captures the purest flavors in this special dessert wine.” Steve Evans of Evans Candy is a true chocolatier; he only creates his delectable truffles from October through the Easter holiday as the heat of summer months can greatly affect chocolate. Troxell's favorite truffles are the double dark that will be the crown jewel of the three gems offered, including a raspberrychampagne and an espresso truffle. Evans' truffles are also sold in the winery's tasting room and are available in half-pound boxes for enjoying at home and gift-giving. Galen Glen Winery is located in the beautiful rolling hills of Andreas, Pa. The vineyard is on the family's double-century farm and is full of
history. The tasting room's knowledgeable and engaging staff always make your visit enjoyable. Currently, the tasting room is open Friday 12 to 5 p.m., Saturday 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., and Sunday 12 to 5 p.m. It is closed Monday through Thursday for the winter with expanded hours resuming April through December. Plan to spend some time enjoying the exceptional views and a glass of award-winning wine with locally-made cheeses or pack some light fare. For more information about the winery's other award winning wines and other upcoming events, please visit the www.galenglen.com or "Like" us on Facebook at Galen Glen Vineyard & Winery and follow on Twitter @galenglenwine. The tasting room may be reached via telephone at 570-3863682. The staff looks forward to meeting you and your family and helping you create unforgettable memories during the year-long anniversary celebration at Galen Glen.
