From The Editor’s Desk. Those who have been reading the Gazette during my tenure at the paper will know that I occasionally appeal to our audience for help, or to highlight a good cause. This is one of those times. Gianna Miller is the daughter of a friend who I knew growing up in Weatherly, in the Northern part of Carbon County. This is her story:
Outpouring of Support for Local Girl By Joe Korba
In a tight-knit community like Weatherly everyone knows one another. They eat at the same restaurants, shop at the same stores and all of their kids go to school together. Generations play basketball on the same courts and congregate in the same parks as they have for decades. Weatherly is a town that rallies behind it’s own, and pulls together when someone needs help. A local woman, Rebecca Ravina reached out to the Weatherly community last week and has received a tremendous amount of support from both locals

and from people around the country. Ms. Ravina’s three-year-old daughter, Gianna, has been afflicted with seizures since she was 9 months old. These seizures are unpredictable and vary in intensity from partial seizures, which affect a certain part of the brain and have symptoms that may be overlooked by an untrained eye to very serious Grand Mal (Tonic-clonic) seizures that affect the entire brain and cause loss of consciousness and convulsions. Because of her condition Gianna has very strict limitations on physical activity. She can’t climb trees and has to be carefully monitored when climbing stairs and just generally being a little kid – running, jumping and playing. The little girl loves to dress up in tutus and high heels but never hesitates to dig for worms or play war with her older brother. She has a favorite blanket, from which she is inseparable. Unfortunately, along with her blanket, Gianna has to always carry a backpack containing Diastat, a medication that can stop one of her seizures about five-minutes after she starts showing symptoms. Gianna has been seen at the renowned Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia and gets regular MRIs and EEGs to track changes and abnormalities. Because of the potential for a seizure at any time, Ms. Ravina has to keep a very close eye on her daughter constantly. But, she recently made a discovery that would make life easier, and much safer, for both mother and daughter. The idea to get a service dog, specifically a seizure response dog, came to Ms. Ravina as she was thinking of better ways to supervise Gianna as her condition changes and evolves. According to Ms. Ravina the seizures are “always different, the longest one lasted twenty five minutes.” A seizure response dog would be alert to subtle changes that might signal an oncoming seizure which would allow anyone supervising Gianna to make sure she is safe should she start to show symptoms. As well as being practical and predicting seizures, the dog would also comfort Gianna afterwards. However, the service dogs, because of their breeding and training, are somewhat cost prohibitive. The chocolate Labrador Retriever, a breed favored for their mild temperament, from Endless Mountain Labradors will run about $7,000, including specialized training at Marx’s Lehigh Valley Dog Training. To help cover the costs of getting Gianna her dog Ms. Ravina began to plan a fundraiser and launched an online campaign. As of press time the social media driven campaign has raised well over $900. “I can't believe how many people are donating

People I don't know have made donations, people from other states. There are also quite a few that are reaching out to local organizations to help make this possible. maker into the second floor of his shop. And he still makes the brooms out of broom corn like his dad always did. He is a carpenter but he makes the brooms throughout the winter, when he can not work outside. He began to learn broom making when he was 19 years old. His dad had an accident; he broke his arm and then put Willie at making the brooms from the broom corn that people had brought to make their brooms. Willie worked at it with his dad standing along side, telling him how to do it. I think his dad’s bad luck was Willie’s good luck; else he may not have learned that trade. Almost every farmer planted broom corn years ago. When it was almost mature, the farmer bent the tassels over so that the tassels were hanging downward, so that they would remain nice and straight. Some people bring the broom handle from an old worn out broom for him to make a new one. Willie said the [new] handles would cost two cents years ago, but now cost 18 cents. Even when they only cost two cents, some people brought the old handle to save that cost. We Pennsylvania Dutch are forever thrifty. That is the only way to come by things. Tea made from broom corn was always drunk by people who had dropsy [Edema].

St. John Neumann School Digs up Treasures
A quarter of a century's worth of history has been dredged up from the depths of the Palmerton Borough Park. Nearly 25 years after it was interred in the borough park, a rocket that really is a time capsule was dug up. The rocket designed by Warren E. Siegmond and built by the New Jersey Zinc Co., is a 15-foot time capsule named the S.S. Palmer Enterprise. It was originally buried in the park on Oct. 8, 1988. Inside were treasures from many organizations and businesses, including St. John Neumann Regional School. Treasures included; letters and drawings from
students who attended St. John Neumann 25 years ago, a black and white yearbook from 1986-1987, pictures and letters from the staff and a copy of the schools official handbook. Students wrote about their dream jobs for the future which included being a…swim coach, professional football players, zoologist and a “gas man.” The schools handbook was really interested to read, highlighting; parental responsibilities, discipline, homework requirements, the schools philosophy and the dreaded DETENTION! Sister Virginia Stephanie, the schools current Principal, opened the historic package with the students one afternoon. “It was really magical! Our students were amazed by the history and enjoyed reading the letters. Some were from their own relatives who attended the school back twenty five years ago”. The Catholic school, which offers Kindergarten through 8th grade has campuses in Palmerton and Slatington. They can be contacted at 610-826-2354.

By Candi Lynn and Friend
One summer evening, my new friend and I decided to go for a stroll alongside the lake. It was a warm, but breezy evening and many people were out by the lake, boating, swimming and just relaxing in the midst of nature's beauty. As we walked, we thought about what we saw. We particularly noticed the young boy with his pup. They both were playing on the shore line. The boy tossing a ball in the water for the pup to retrieve. We stood there and watched for a while, recalling days gone by. We kept on walking and noticed another gentleman with his other dog. He was teaching his dog to flush out the fake birds that were put in the tall grass. What a sight to see! With the dog doing exactly what was asked of him and receiving high praises…..the special bonds of humans and their dogs. We continued on our walk along the shoreline, enjoying each other's company and the cool water on a warm summer's eve. Eventually the sun started setting and we headed home. We came to the porch and sat down, and listened to the crickets in the yard, the rustling of the leaves in the breeze, as the sun slowly set. It was then we looked at each other, and his arm went around me, holding me near. Our first day and first outing, one of many to share together. We came to be for a reason, he needing me and me needing him. Today was my adoption day! My new forever friend knows the privilege of adopting a senior dog such as myself. The love, companionship and making everyday a special day, bonding into a relationship giving this special senior dog a second chance at life, love and happiness. We may or may not have a lot of years to spend together. But this isn’t what matters most. We both know that it is the quality of time spent together that is very special and we’ll hold that time dear. I give thanks to Mid-Atlantic English Springer Spaniel Rescue, for giving a senior such as myself a second chance at a new life and a forever home. Candace J. Lynn is a volunteer and champion for rescue dogs in the Lehigh Valley and beyond. Her passion for puppies is never ending. She volunteers with MAESSR (Mid-Atlantic English Springer Spaniel Rescue) as well as A Tail to Cocker Spaniel Adoption Center. She is a founding coordinator of Paw Prints on the Canal. Giving dogs a second chance at life is her mission that she plans to continue for a long long time.

Five Good Reasons to E-file Your Tax Return If you haven’t tried IRS e-file before, now is the time. Most taxpayers – more than 80 percent – file electronically. The IRS has processed more than 1 billion individual tax returns safely and securely since the nationwide debut of electronic filing in 1990. Fewer people file a paper tax return every year. Here are five good reasons to e-file your tax return: 1. Accurate and complete. E-file is the best way to file an accurate and complete tax return. Tax returns that are incomplete or include errors take longer to process. 2. Safe and secure. Tax preparers and software companies who e-file must meet strict guidelines and provide the best in encryption technology. You receive an acknowledgement within 48 hours that the IRS received your tax return. If the IRS does not accept your tax return, you will receive notification and can quickly correct your return and resubmit it. 3. Faster refunds. An e-filed tax return usually means a faster refund compared to a paper return. The IRS issues most refunds in less than 21 days. If you choose direct deposit, your refund goes directly into your bank account. Combining e-file with direct deposit is the fastest way to get your refund. About three out of four taxpayers who file

receive a tax refund. Last year the average refund was about $2,700. 4. Payment options. If you owe tax, you can e-file early and set an automatic payment date anytime on or before the April 15 due date. You can pay by check or money order, by debit or credit card, or by transferring funds electronically from your bank account. 5. It’s easy. You can e-file on your own through IRS Free File, the free tax preparation and e-filing service available exclusively at IRS.gov. You can also use commercial tax preparation software or ask your tax preparer to e-file your return. And, if you qualify, IRS Volunteer Income Tax Assistance and Tax Counseling for the Elderly partners will e-file your return for free. For more information about IRS e-file, visit IRS. gov.

Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC) helps you keep more of what you earned New Tripoli Resident Marches at Inauguration
Virginia Military Institute cadet Nicholas H. Millward was among the approximately 1,500 who marched in this year's presidential Inaugural Parade Jan. 21. Cadet Millward is from New Tripoli. His parents are Mr. & Mrs. Harry T. Millward. The Corps of Cadets marched through the heart of Washington D.C., from the U.S. Capitol Building to the reviewing stand at the White House. The Corps was the final group in the parade, passing the president in review at about 6:30 p.m. The cadets' participation marked the 14th time that the VMI Corps of Cadets has marched in a presidential Inaugural Parade. VMI, with an enrollment of 1,600 cadets, is the nation's oldest state-supported military college.
No tax benefit offers a greater lifeline to working families than EITC. Yet, one out of every five eligible taxpayers fails to claim it, according to the IRS. Because of the economy, even more people may be eligible if they have had changes in their earned income. Here are a few things to keep in mind: n The
maximum credit for 2012 tax returns is $5,891 for workers with three or more qualifying children.
n Eligibility
for the EITC is determined based on a number of factors including earnings, filing status and eligible children. Workers without qualifying children may be eligible for a smaller credit amount.
Learn more at www.irs.gov/eitc and use the EITC Assistant, or ask your tax professional. If you are eligible for EITC, you also are eligible for free tax help at VITA sites nationwide or to use Free File at www.irs.gov/freefile.

Seventy volunteers participated in the 16th annual survey last February and sighted over 3,000 birds of 38 different species – all three numbers were recordhighs for the count. Over 40,000 birds have been tallied in sixteen years of counting. The Feeder Watch is one of the long-term research projects of the Lehigh Gap Nature Center. Because birds are excellent indicators of environmental quality, a long-term study like the Feeder Watch may provide valuable data about environmental quality in the study area. It is important to have a large number of volunteers to gather enough data for the survey to be more accurate. Former participants will automatically be sent a packet for the 2013 survey, but additional feeder watchers are welcome and needed. The objective of the Feeder Watch is to sample the numbers and species of birds visiting backyard feeders on a particular winter day at as many feeders as possible in an area around Lehigh Gap. The results will be published by the Nature Center and distributed to local news media. The Feeder Watch survey is conducted by volunteers who live within a 15-mile radius of

Lehigh Gap. Anyone in that geographic area with one or more bird feeders of any type in their yard, and who can identify the individual species of birds that visit the feeders, is invited to participate in the 2013 Feeder Watch. Volunteers are asked to spend a few hours throughout the day on February 15, 16, or 17th observing their feeders and recording any visitors. The Lehigh Gap Area Feeder Watch is an opportunity for back-yard bird watchers -- ordinary citizens -- to make a contribution to a scientific study. The Cornell Laboratory of Ornithology and the National Audubon Society started a similar project one year after the LGNC count began, and LGNC officials encourage their participants to submit their count data to Cornell’s Great Backyard Bird Count (http://www.birdsource.org/gbbc) as well as to LGNC. Volunteers will receive a Feeder Watch data sheet and instructions via email or regular mail as requested. To volunteer, contact the Nature Center at 610-760-8889 or at lgnc@ptd.net, and provide your name, address, and phone number/email address and note that you are volunteering for the Feeder Watch program. Lehigh Gap Nature Center is a member supported environmental education and wildlife conservation organization located at Lehigh Gap between Slatington and Palmerton.

Lehighton Democratic Information Center A group of local Democrats believe that having a Democratic Election Headquarters during the recent campaigns was such a positive experience, they were willing to reach into their wallets and fund a “Democratic Information Center” through 2013. The new “Democratic Information Center” will be located at 110 S. First St. in Lehighton (across from the Senior High Rise) in the same location as the former Democratic Headquarters. Carol O’Brien, a member of the steering committee, said,“ Every election year we scramble around to find a headquarters only to clean it out after the election and then find another location for the next election. By keeping a functioning office open, we will have an established location for volunteers to gather and for the use of candidates who are running in 2013.”The Center will initially open on Thursdays and Fridays from 1 to 4p.m. It is also open by arrangement for meetings, events or training sessions. Volunteers who want to be involved may call The Center. The phone number is 610-377-5178.

Extra Point by Tyler Trumbauer
The Trojans Seek Titles
The old adage goes,“Offense wins games, but defense wins championships.” For the Parkland boys’ basketball team, that saying fits perfectly. “I think our kids realize that defensively we need to get better. We definitely need to make defending and keeping these teams to a certain amount of points a priority,” Head coach Andy Stephens said in a phone call last week.“We are getting there. We aren’t there yet. In order to win anything significant we will need to play really good defense,” he continued. The Trojans, led by Stephens, are capping off a tremendous winter. As of printing, Parkland possesses an 8-2 record in the Lehigh Valley Conference and a 13-5 mark overall. They have clinched a spot in the District 11 AAAA tournament. However, the team isn’t worrying about districts quite yet as they have also clinched the North Division in the LVC and will be a part of the league playoffs.
The Trojans’ are allowing, on average, 50 points per contest. Fortunately for them, they average 60 points offensively. The sentiment of a defensive improvement is known throughout the locker room as senior Austin Beidelman expressed his opinion on how to better the defensive inefficiency in a text last week,“We need to never take a play off and work harder defensively!” The Trojans endured a crushing loss to fellow LVC elite, Freedom, early in the season before they won 12 straight games in the meat of their regular season schedule. That winning streak was not an easy feat as the LVC is a very tough league this year. At time of printing eight out of twelve teams in the league were district qualifiers. Unlike most successful basketball teams, Parkland does not have a solid big man in the post. Stephens expressed his concern over that fact to me in the preseason, but he is confident with his team’s efforts in the paint this so far,“We have kind of been working by committee. There hasn’t been one guy that we really have stuck with. We have been alternating between [senior] Nate Case, [junior] Nick Selvaggi and [junior] Alex Mitton. Those three in different games have all done a good job. We don’t really have a true ‘big-man’ as we have had in previous years.” The aforementioned Beidelman, fellow senior Nick Rindock, and junior Justin Zajko all have

had great seasons statistically as all three players average double digit points per game. When asked about his excellent individual performances this year Beidelman deflects the spotlight, “[This season] means a lot to me, but my teammates put me in spots to score. It’s a team game, not just about an individual.” Stephens, who is in his fifth year as the head coach at Parkland, echoes the 6’3” guard’s views on the individual success this winter,“We knew coming in that if those three didn’t work together and help each other that we wouldn’t be successful. Each one of them needs the other guy. It is a matter of them having faith in one another.” This season was a predicted successful one by many around the Lehigh Valley and the Trojans did not fail to deliver. However, they have some fierce opponents ahead of them in the league playoffs and the district tournament as well. Without an improved defense, it’ll be a tall task for them to

still be playing in mid-March. With any improved defensive plan, anything is plausible for these talented Trojans.

He saw action in both European and Pacific operations during WW II and was awarded the Purple Heart for injuries he received during the invasion of France. Father McElduff served as the second pastor of St. Nicholas for 20 years before retiring in 2002. In spite of the pain he still endures from those war injuries, he remains active and occasionally returns to St. Nicholas to assist Msgr. Thomas Durzak, Pastor, with the parish mass schedule. After masses on the 20th, parishioners celebrated Father Ed's 91st birthday with coffee, donuts, cake and many warm birthday greetings.

Spread the Good Word Lent Offerings at St. Nicholas Catholic Church
Ash Wednesday, February 13, marks the beginning of the holy season of Lent. It is a time when Christians acknowledge their need to reform their lives and draw closer to God. A symbol of this commitment is made when a person receives ashes, made in the sign of the cross, on his/her forehead. Ashes will be distributed at all services on Ash Wednesday at St. Nicholas Church. Those services will include two masses: 8:30 am and 7 p.m. A prayer service will be held at noon. St. Nicholas Parish will offer many opportunities to draw closer to Our Lord as they make the journey through lent. Join them Wednesdays between 5 and 6:30 p.m. for a simple, sacrificial, meal, and make new friends in the process. All are welcome! If you wish, you may bring soup, bread or an easy dessert to share, or make a voluntary donation of cash. All money received will benefit the Allentown Soup Kitchen operated by the Lehigh County Conference of Churches.
Wednesday evenings through Lent and Holy Week are a time of prayer and reconciliation. Stations of the Cross will be held on Wednesdays at 7 p.m. Come early and spend some quiet time with Our Lord. The Blessed Sacrament will be placed on the altar for prayer and adoration beginning at 6:30 pm. Also, between 6:30 and 7 p.m., Msgr. Thomas Durzak will be available in the sacristy to hear confessions. There will be several opportunities for spiritual healing and growth through the Sacrament of Reconciliation. St. Nicholas will host a Penance Service on Tuesday, March 19 at 7 p.m. In addition, Father Tom will be hearing confessions each Saturday of Lent at 3:30 p.m. For those seeking God’s grace and healing from physical, mental or emotional pain, a Healing Mass is scheduled for Tuesday, March 12 at 7:30 p.m.. Father Ed McElduff will celebrate the mass, and Father Tom will concelebrate. An adult education program called “Catholicism” will be presented at 7 p.m. starting

February 21 and continuing through the next four Thursdays during Lent. The program is a series of five videos that explains what Catholics believe – and why. A brief discussion period will follow each presentation. The parish extends a warm invitation to all Catholics who wish to explore their faith more deeply and to anyone interested in learning about the faith. Each session will be held in the parish rectory meeting room. St. Nicholas Church is located in Lehigh Township at 1152 Oak Road, Walnutport (on Rt. 946, Berlinsville). For more information www. Angie’s Way to Wellness By Ashley Fenstermaker
Is Raw Sugar Okay?
“Raw " sugar- Just because something is natural doesn't mean it's exactly healthy for you. Raw sugar isn't even really raw. It's just a tad less refined, so it retains some of the molasses. Advertisers claim that these natural sugars retain more of the nutrients from the original plant. And, technically, that may be true, but sugar cane doesn’t have many nutrients to begin with! From a nutritional standpoint, there really is no significant difference between sugar, raw sugar, natural sugar. Although some are definitely less processed, they all provide the same number of calories, and when it comes to digestion and metabolism, your body cannot tell the difference. If you prefer a less-processed product, raw sugar or evaporated cane juice are recommended. But you must limit your intake exactly the way you would limit your intake of refined white sugar.
