10 Essential Health Tips For Seniors Source: www.parentgiving.com/eldercare
FROM BABY BOOMERS TO SENIOR BOOMERS: 10 TIPS TO KEEP YOU HEALTHY AND FIT In the last census baby boomers, those 65+, accounted for 13% of the population. This age group grew at a faster rate than the population under age 45, and it’s clear that the US is an aging population. Happily, aging is different now than it was for our parents and grandparents. Today, there are more people living longer than at any other time in history. In fact, boomers will number 78 million by 2030.“This generation, associated with social change including the civil rights and anti-war movements in the 1960s, has another important cause - ”staying healthy,” says soon-to-be 65-year-old Arthur Hayward, MD, a geriatrician and clinical lead physician for Kaiser Permanente. “We need to become activists in promoting healthful behaviors and try our best to remain active and healthy the rest of our lives.” How to do it? Dr. Hayward recommends these 10 easy health tips for seniors to help baby boomers live longer and thrive: 1. QUIT SMOKING. Take this critical step to improve your health and combat aging. Smoking

kills by causing cancer, strokes and heart failure. Smoking leads to erectile dysfunction in men due to atherosclerosis and to excessive wrinkling by attacking skin elasticity. Many resources are available to help you quit. 2. KEEP ACTIVE. Do something to keep fit each day - ”something you enjoy that maintains strength, balance and flexibility and promotes cardiovascular health. Physical activity helps you stay at a healthy weight, prevent or control illness, sleep better, reduce stress, avoid falls and look and feel better, too. 3. EAT WELL. Combined with physical activity, eating nutritious foods in the right amounts can help keep you healthy. Many illnesses, such as heart disease, obesity, high blood pressure, type 2 diabetes, and osteoporosis, can be prevented or controlled with dietary changes and exercise. Calcium and vitamin D supplements can help women prevent osteoporosis. 4. MAINTAIN A HEALTHY WEIGHT. Extra weight increases your risk for heart disease, diabetes and high blood pressure. Use the Kaiser Permanente BMI (body mass index) calculator to find out what you should weigh for your height. Get to your healthy weight and stay there by eating right and keeping active. Replace sugary drinks with water - ”water is calorie free! 5. PREVENT FALLS. We become vulnerable to falls as we age. Prevent falls and injury by removing loose carpet or throw rugs. Keep paths clear of electrical cords and clutter, and use night-lights in hallways and bathrooms. Did you know that people who walk barefoot fall more frequently? Wear shoes with good support to reduce the risk of falling. 6. STAY UP-TO-DATE ON IMMUNIZATIONS AND OTHER HEALTH SCREENINGS. By age 50, women should begin mammography screening for breast cancer. Men can be checked for prostate cancer. Many preventive screenings are available. Those who are new to Medicare are entitled to a “Welcome to Medicare” visit and all Medicare members to an annual wellness visit. Use these visits to discuss which preventative screenings and vaccinations are due. 7. PREVENT SKIN CANCER. As we age, our skin grows thinner; it becomes drier and less elastic. Wrinkles appear, and cuts and bruises take longer to heal. Be sure to protect your skin from the sun. Too much sun and ultraviolet rays can cause skin cancer. 8. GET REGULAR DENTAL, VISION AND HEARING CHECKUPS. Your teeth and gums will last a lifetime News@TownAndCountryGazette.com || FEBRUARY 1, 2018
if you care for them properly - that means daily brushing and flossing and getting regular dental checkups. By age 50, most people notice changes to their vision, including a gradual decline in the ability to see small print or focus on close objects. Common eye problems that can impair vision include cataracts and glaucoma. Hearing loss occurs commonly with aging, often due to exposure to loud noise. 9. MANAGE STRESS. Try exercise or relaxation techniques - ”perhaps meditation or yoga - ”as a means of coping. Make time for friends and social contacts and fun. Successful coping can affect our health and how we feel. Learn the role of positive thinking. 10. FAN THE FLAME. When it comes to sexual intimacy and aging, age is no reason to limit your sexual enjoyment. Learn about physical changes that come with aging and get suggestions to help you adjust to them, if necessary.
Elder Care Tips: How to Keep Homebound Elders Active and Mobile
Book club – Kindles are great for this, since books can be downloaded from the library and the font can be adjusted for older eyes. Old friends will have a lot of fun discussing books. New hobbies – Many people find a new calling when they give up their busy lives. Grandma Moses didn’t start painting seriously until she was 78. Some people may prefer writing or creating poetry, sculpting or wood carving. If your loved one has an interest, encourage it. The internet – Many seniors are reluctant to try using a computer, but if you can keep your instructions simple, they may be induced to attempt it. Introduce them to e-mail first. Then show them some of the games, especially the ones where they can interact with other people. Skype could be ideal for communicating with far flung family. EXERCISE FOR ELDERS Yoga – Incorporating stretching, balance and resistance training, yoga is ideal for elder care. It can even be done by seniors unable to stand. Improved balance, better sleep, release of stress and easing of pain are all benefits of yoga. Indoor gardening – You can set up a planter in the house or use a window box. Either way the senior with a penchant for gardening will enjoy Continued on page 8

Other than pain and loss of independence, what is the worst part of growing old? You might not guess this one…boredom. When you’ve been busy all your life, at work, at home, with friends and family, the quiet at the end of life can leave you feeling empty, a bit useless and bored. Boredom turns the seconds into minutes… and the minutes into hours until time stretches out with no goals, no interests. Yet there are entire new worlds to learn about out there. Even the homebound elder can find them. If your loved one cannot, or will not, create new goals and interests, then you can introduce those new worlds. Elder care, even when the loved one is still living independently, requires some innovation and inspiration. Here are several ideas to keep your loved one active and interested in a robust life. ENTERTAINMENT FOR ELDERS Game night – Organize a regular event. It can be twice a week or twice a month. Invite old friends and family members to play cards or chess or bingo. Any board game can be great fun when played with friends. FEBRUARY 1, 2018 || townandcountrygazette.com

caring for the plants, reducing stress and staying active. WORK FOR ELDERS Volunteer – How can a homebound senior be a volunteer? Sewing, knitting, crocheting, making phone calls, doing research on the net are all activities that can be done at home. Tutoring – If your loved one was an accountant, a teacher, a musician or a carpenter or cook, they may have valuable experience and knowledge to impart to students, whether paid or not. Few activities are as rewarding as teaching. Consulting – Retired businessmen, lawyers, doctors, teachers, administrators, anyone with expertise can work from home and earn money. Click here for more info on at senior employment opportunities. EXTRA CARE FOR ELDERS In home caregivers, highly trained in senior care, can relieve a lot of the stress on you, your family and your loved one. In addition to making sure your senior gets medications on time, eats right, gets to the bathroom safely, and lives in a clean environment, a caregiver offers company.

Whatever activities you and your loved one decide on, try to keep to a regular schedule. Don’t let your senior slip into depression and lethargy. Elder care also consists of keeping the elderly alert and engaged. And when you go to see your senior, take your dog along with you. Studies have shown the benefits of interactions with a pet on improved health in the elderly.
Medicare Basics: Understanding your Loved one's primary Care insurance by Patricia Barry
Find out which health costs Medicare covers and what your options are. Medicare can seem overwhelming. But if you are a caregiver, it's important to understand how it works, as it will likely be the primary insurance coverage for your loved one. Medicare is a federal program that provides health insurance for people over age 65, as well as some younger people with disabilities and people with end-stage kidney disease or Lou Gehrig's disease (ALS). By learning about enrollment, benefits and out-of-pocket costs, you can help your parents make informed heath care coverage decisions. THE BASICS Like most other insurance, Medicare does not pay for all health care costs. Patients are responsible for deductibles, premiums and coinsurance or copayments. Medicare also doesn't cover: long-term or custodial care (such as help with bathing and dressing); an extended stay in a nursing home; health care when you travel outside the country. Medicare has several plans and the choice affects how much you pay and what is covered. Original Medicare Plan (also known as traditional) Is set up as fee-for-service. Patients can choose any doctor or hospital that accepts Medicare. Part A helps pay for inpatient hospital care, limited nursing home and home health care, and hospice care. Part B helps pay for doctor visits, some outpatient home health care, medical equipment, some preventive services, outpatient hospital care, rehabilitation therapy, laboratory tests, x-rays, mental health services, ambulance services and blood. News@TownAndCountryGazette.com || FEBRUARY 1, 2018
Part A has no premiums. There is an annual deductible and coinsurance payments. Part B coverage is optional. There is a monthly premium for Part B, plus an annual deductible and a coinsurance payment of 20 percent of approved charges. Some people wait to sign up for Part B, but those who wait may have to pay a late enrollment penalty if they enroll after the period when they are first eligible. Medicare Advantage Plans (also known as Medicare Health Plans or Medicare Part C) Plans vary widely and include Health Maintenance Organizations (HMOs), Preferred Provider Organizations (PPOs) and Private-Fee-For-Service (PFFS) plans. Plans are run by private companies that decide the rules for covering benefits and payments. Each year, the company can change benefits, premiums and other costs. In most plans, patients can only go to doctors, specialists and hospitals on the plan's list. Going out of network usually costs more out-ofpocket. Most plans offer at least one option with drug coverage. Each year, patients can decide whether to stay in their current plan, switch to another Medicare Advantage plan or return to Original Medicare. Medicare Prescription Drug Coverage (also known as Part D) There is no single Medicare drug plan. They are run by private companies that have been approved by Medicare to offer prescription drug coverage. Benefits and costs vary among sponsors and drug plans. Medicare drug plans are not required to cover every prescription drug, but they must provide choices within each category of drugs. Plans do not cover over-the-counter medicines. Like other insurance, Part D plans have premiums, co-payments and/or coinsurance, and sometimes deductibles. FEBRUARY 1, 2018 || townandcountrygazette.com
Costs will depend on what drugs you take and which plan you choose. PAYING FOR MEDICARE Medicare Part D Extra Help Program For people who have limited incomes and resources to pay for most of their Medicare Part D premiums, co-payments and deductibles. Provides continuous drug coverage throughout the year. Seniors who are enrolled in Medicaid, Supplemental Security Income (SSI) or a Medicare Savings program automatically get Extra Help with paying for Part D. Otherwise, seniors need to first apply for Extra Help and then enroll in a private Medicare approved prescription drug plan. Medicare Savings Programs These programs help pay out-of-pocket Medicare costs for people with Medicare who have limited incomes and resources. Programs are known as the Qualified Medicare Beneficiary (QMB), the Specified Low-Income Medicare Beneficiary (SLMB) and the Qualifying Individuals (QI). Medigap or Medicare Supplemental insurance Sold by private companies, this coverage pays for some of the health care services and supplies not covered by Original Medicare such as your share of doctor and hospital services.

In Memory of Donald D. Owens my beloved husband I want to thank all of our family and friends especially the Slatington Library Board and Staff for their support through Donald's courageous battle with cancer. The last several months have been very difficult. Anyone who has a loved one battling cancer knows what a toll it takes on the patient and their family. The doctor's, nurses, home health care, and finally hospice staff were wonderful in their care of Donald. I am grateful to Pastors Laura Stone, Henry Distler, the L.O.O.M 1375, Slatington Masonic Lodge F&A. Neuritis also comes up – Sciatica [is] a terrible thing, Which makes one to walk ‘crooked.’ One always heard about backaches – Something failed in the kidneys; Now it is called lumbago and not Counted on as an easy ailment. ‘Chest-fever’ is pneumonia now, For ‘sniffles’, cold in the head, Today one has sinusitis(?) as well as Some names [which are] more course. About the country doctor It’s wonderful how Medicine Advances over the years; In olden times, one did not know About illnesses one will get today. [If] one was stiff in the joints in the shoulder, arm or leg, Then that was called rheumatism – Just that and nothing else more. Now one soon talks about arthritis

Yet I still have a soft spot In my heart – and this also remains – For the doctor, who out in the country Always carried out his duty honestly.

Everyone is a ‘specialist’ around here, Who examines for one thing; [If] three things go wrong at one time, Six doctors will soon be visited. Of course, it is good we have these Fellows, we live longer today; As much as twenty years, perhaps, Than in the old times.

That man, who was often up in age, Yet he kept on working With buggy and his old horse – [Where] sickness was, he was there. He just did not make much money, Payments were often small, Yet he was highly esteemed, A neighbor and so much more. And it was not always the medicine, Not pills given out, But a friendly word and a soft hand That assisted with and healed sickness. I happily think on that old man Who drove around in the country, And gave of himself, and brought faith to all sorts of people.
