Rails to Trails News submitted by NANCY THATCHER
Lehigh Township Rails to Trails is looking for additional members to join us on walks and bicycle rides and to help with our projects. For example, we build benches along trails, plant native plants, create signage, install bird houses and engage in a variety of other activities. At present, we are in the planning stages for a walking/nature trail at one of the township parks. We soon will be putting the finishing touches on the phone booth area north of the Cove Rd trailhead along the Delaware and Lehigh Trail as well. In the warmer months we maintain a picnic area along the canal towpath in Walnutport. For fellowship and exercise we plan hikes and fun rides on trails located all over the Lehigh Valley. If you would like to become a member, or need to renew your membership, send an email to ltr2t@hotmail. com or call 610-767-0676 and we will send you a membership form. You do not need to be a resident of Lehigh Township to join. We meet at 7 p.m. the third Thursday of each month at the Lehigh Township municipal building. Come to a meeting to see what we are up to. Elections were held recently for officers for 2017. They are: Nancy Thatcher, president, Dean Hower, vice-president, Sandy Hopkins, secretary, and Lloyd Hopkins, treasurer.

The officers and members of the NLHS thank the Trust for their on-going, generous support. The NLHS meets on the last Wednesday of the month (except July and August) at the Slatington Borough Hall at 7 p.m. Our meetings are held in conjunction with the monthly meetings of The Venture Group, a coalition of local non-profit and community organizations dedicated to the betterment of the northern Lehigh area. Grateful for the System submitted by former client JACOB HOSTETTER
If my adolescent self had known that I would be sitting here and writing to a community of foster children, parents, and social workers about my positive experience in the foster care system, I would not have believed it. My story starts with my childhood in Locustdale, Pa., a small town in Schuylkill County. I always thought my life was normal, but rather it was my perception of normality. I lived with my mother, father, older sister, younger brother, cats, and fish. During my teenage years, I started to experiment with drugs and alcohol and eventually graduated to opiate pills. My siblings and I shoplifted, vandalized, and skipped school. It was due to all of these issues that Children and Youth Services eventually became involved in our lives. In June 2007, my CYS caseworker informed us that my mother was arrested and my father had fled the state. Since no other family members lived in the immediate area, we were placed in the foster care system. As you can probably imagine, a fifteen-year-old kid taken from his family, friends, and lifestyle isn’t likely to be the nicest person to new foster parents,
but despite that I was accepted with no questions asked. I was soon placed in the home of Michael and Tabitha Fidler who worked out of CONCERN’s Susquehanna Valley Regional Office. My first day there, I tried to steal Mrs. Fidler’s cigarettes and cursed out Mr. Fidler. Clearly, I had a pattern of disrespecting everything and everyone around me. Eventually, my new environment forced me to focus on other things such as schoolwork. As it turns out, I had a brain in my head. When I actually studied, I earned good grades. This was something I had never done before. In May 2008, my siblings and I were told that we had a court hearing scheduled and that our parents might be there. At that point, we hadn’t had contact with them for nearly a year due to their legal issues and when we arrived at the courthouse, there they were! We were scheduled for a few more visits, after which we would be allowed to live with our parents again. Soon after our second visit on June 6, my father had a seizure and passed away. A few years later, we learned he had died of a drug overdose. In June 2010, when it was time for me to graduate high school, Mrs. Fidler asked me what I planned on doing with my life. Still grieving, I told her that I would do manual labor because that was what my father did for a living. Little did I know,

the next thing she said would totally change the way I thought about my future: “Jake, you have a brain in your head and the resources available to go to college.” With the support of my family, CONCERN, and Northumberland County Children and Youth Services, I earned my B.A. in Psychology from Susquehanna University in 2014. After graduation, I found employment as an addictions counselor in a residential drug and alcohol treatment facility. This experience further taught me the importance of making healthy lifestyle and behavioral choices. I look back on my negative behavior patterns and thank my good fortune that foster care interrupted a series of extremely poor choices. I did not always feel this way about foster care. To be honest, I despised it. The shock of being placed in a new environment and being pushed in a different direction made me angry and led me to rebel. Looking back, I realize it was the best thing that ever happened to me. Our pain and challenges make us who we are today. Not all foster children are as fortunate as I, but I urge any foster child to remember that pain and fear do not have to define our entire future. There is always hope that a negative situation is temporary and can be unexpectedly worthwhile. To the foster parents and social workers, I
understand that sometimes it feels like the rewards are outweighed by the stress that goes into helping others, but you can make all the difference to a foster child. I still keep in regular contact with my foster parents and I cannot thank them enough for giving me their dedication when I needed it most. With them as our role models, my wife and I plan to pay it forward by someday becoming foster parents and adopting our own foster children.

Middle School Receives $1,200 Grant Submitted by CLAUDIA SHULMAN
Northampton Area Konkrete Kids Educational Foundation board members presented Mrs. Kristin Weller, 8th grade English/Language Arts teacher, with a check for $1200 at a presentation ceremony held in the Northampton Area Middle School on Friday, February 3. The grant will provide funding for the scheduled May 19 Holocaust Awareness Program organized by Mrs. Weller for all 8th graders in the Middle School. This Holocaust Program is a culminating activity for the 8th grade students’ study of “The Diary of Anne Frank” in their English classes. The daylong Program will include a 45 minute dramatization of the play version of “The Diary” by a theater group
from the Philadelphia Holocaust Awareness and Education Center. After the performance the students will be engaged in small group discussions led by their teachers and focused on the performance and text. Following this session, invited Holocaust survivor speakers will be escorted to classrooms where they will spend approximately 75 minutes sharing their personal stories, facilitating a question/answer period, and interacting with the students. Teacherled breakout sessions in the afternoon will focus on more in-depth discussions, as well as writing and art activities that will provide students with opportunities to demonstrate what they have learned through this enrichment experience that reinforces their classroom study. This is the second year that Mrs. Weller has organized this 8th grade educational activity, which was so successful last year. It is also the second year that the Northampton Area Konkrete Kids Educational Foundation has provided a grant to support this educational program, and it reflects the Foundation’s commitment to provide funding for “innovative programs which supplement and enhance the quality of education” while providing our students with “extended learning opportunities” that support “new ideas and practices to strengthen teaching and learning.” VERETT

Baarfiessich in der Schnee geyaagt, Mer hen uns net emol beglaagt.
That she always said with blowing [on it], Yes, that helped, always, right away. And also when it was something worse, We were never long in danger.
Un's Kalt des setzt sich uff die Bruscht, Was hen mer in de Roi rum ghuuscht! Fer sell waar Daerbedien un Schmalz, En wollner Schtrump fer um der Hals.
Now this was always her way, She had her own pharmacy; Here were teas of all types And all sorts of roots.
Noh heilt en aagewaxe Kind, Dem kann sie helfe zimmlich gschwind; Des schmiert sie yuscht mit Gensfett ei, Dann iss der Druwwel ball verbei.
One just needs to go up to the upper floor, Here was first off, the sage tea, And rattlesnake root, horehound tea, Prunella and yet whatever more.
Die Reedle hen uns gaar nichs gschatt, Hen net emol der Dokder ghatt; Do hot sie Hollerbliet gekocht, Sell hot sie awwer raus gebrocht !
And American Pennyroyal, elderberry blooms, She often steeped these for us. It did not matter what we had, There was always something that gave relief.
Dann waare lose Millichzaeh, Wer wott dann do zum Dokder geh? Die hot sie gschlippt mit schtaericker Neez Un raus gezoppt - die Memm verschteht's.
In spring, with one sluggish blood, For this sassafras was so good; And Sulphur with molasses – Oh! The taste, that follows one to this day!
Am schlimmschde waar des Kasdereil! Des meen ich heit noch, waer fer Geil; Doch hen mer immer besser gfiehlt, Wann mol die Memm hot Dokder gschpielt. -John Birmelin

In winder with frozen feet, Here one’s life was not very sweet; [We were] chased barefooted in the snow, We did not complain at all. And a cold that sets in the chest, How we all coughed around in turn! For that there was turpentine and lard, And a wool stocking for around the neck.

Then a child with dry cough and pain in the side (pleurisy) cries, She can help that one pretty quick; She just rubs in goose fat for him, Then the trouble is soon gone.
people to treat rattlesnake bites and by others Native Americans to treat cold related symptoms. It can be found today in herbal remedies for the latter. Horehound tea: Used originally to treat cold symptoms, it was later found in the form of cold lozenges; but it fell in disuse after the FDA claimed it to be an ineffective ingredient in a 1989 report. Prunella: It is used today as an astringent or an herb to lower fever and blood pressure; that may have been its original usage as well. American Pennyroyal: It was used as a tea to regulate the bowels. It was equated with sage tea among some of the Dutch. As an herb, it still has some questionable uses today. Sassafras tea or Sulphur with molasses: Blood was believed to become thicker and lower in volume during winder so a tea from sassafras leaves or a tonic from sulfur and molasses was used. (By contrast some baking molasses today is described as ‘unsulphured’.) For more information on medicinal remedies among the Dutch: Brendle, Thomas R. Folk Medicine of the Pennsylvania Germans. The measles did not harm us at all, We did not have the doctor one time; For this she cooked elderberry blossoms, That brought them out (got rid of them). Then there were loose baby teeth, Who would in this instance go to a doctor? These she snared with starched thread, And pulled them out – mom understands it. The worst was that castor oil! That I still think today would be for horses; Yet we always felt better, When mom played doctor. [The usage of some of the herbal remedies listed in this poem are no longer common knowledge, so perhaps a little more detail would be appropriate for them. Sage tea: Used by the Dutch to treat sore throats and also as a hair wash. It is still used for sore throats and coughs, often as a gargle. Rattlesnake root: Originally used by the Seneca

10 Things No One Tells You About
the Wedding Day
No matter how many weddings you've attended before, or how many times you've been a bridesmaid, there are some things you just don't find out about until your own wedding day. By RACHEL TORGERSON
Talk to anyone who’s gone through it before and they'll tell you that your wedding day absolutely flies by. You'll be so busy going from one thing to the next that before you know it, you'll be cutting the cake! Any number of wedding planning advice articles will tell you that you need an emergency kit (just in case!), that it can be difficult to use the bathroom in your ball gown and to make sure to pack a stain remover. But also, there are all these intangible, special moments that make up the wedding day itself. Here, 10 truths about the wedding day that no one ever talks about. 1. Ten minutes before the ceremony is the most nervewracking part. The time leading up to the walk down the aisle will be the most anxiety-ridden 10 minutes

you'll ever have. And it makes sense—you're about to make a life-changing decision in front of all the people you love and care about the most. Just remember that your other half is waiting for you at the end of the journey and you're going to have a huge party to celebrate (not to mention the reason why you said "yes" in the first place). 2. The ceremony is the best part. There's something truly amazing about the wedding ceremony. The traditions, the vows and all your emotional family members combine to make this into one of the most special moments of your life. Our advice? Take it all in and drink it up. You'll want these memories to last a lifetime.

3. You'll definitely cry. Okay, this one might not be such a secret. What is it about weddings that makes everyone so emotional anyway? All we can say is that crying is basically inevitable. And since you already know the waterworks are coming, the best thing to do is just be prepared. Wear waterproof makeup (or even get eyelash extensions), keep some mascara and lipstick readily available for quick touch-ups, and store some tissues nearby—you'll need them. 4. Your face will hurt from smiling so much. Thousands of pictures aside, you'll be smiling all day because

it's going to be the best day ever. You're marrying your best friend, after all! Between finally "making it official" with your fiance and dancing like crazy with all of your close friends and family, there's literally no reason to frown (even if it rains). 5. You'll be amazed by the love and support of your family and friends. They all showed up for one reason—you! You and your soon-to-be spouse will get all—and we really mean all—of the attention. You may not even be able to eat dinner, since you'll have so many people to talk to and so many pictures Continued on page 30

to take. Between the pinches on the cheek from your grandma and the side-punches from your college pals, you'll be overcome by the love and support of those around you. 6. You'll want a little alone time. In fact, you might be so overcome that you may want to take a few moments just for you, or the two of you. Some of the most special minutes of the day are the few you get to spend alone—preparing for what's to come— or together with your new spouse, taking it all in. 7. You might be a little exhausted. Let's face it, you won't get too much sleep the night before your wedding. Between stressing over the seating chart, a tiff with your mom, or just overall excitement for the day to come, you'll be seriously lacking in shuteye. Pro tip: Under-eye concealer will be your best friend. 8. It won't all go as planned. Something might end up going wrong. It could be little, or it could be big, but our best advice is to soldier on and try to think of the big picture. Can you solve this problem easily? Does it make a huge difference in the long run? Are your guests still having fun? Are you having fun? If these questions are easily answered, then
don't sweat it—just keep enjoying your celebration, and feel free to delegate tasks to planners and relatives so you don't have to deal with drama. 9. The most magical moment will be when you least suspect it. We promise that the most special moment of the day, or weekend, is going to be something you never expected. A stolen minute or two with your soon-to-be spouse, a hug from your dad, or an impromptu speech by your college roommate could end up meaning the world to you. 10. You'll feel different. Even if you and your other half have been cohabiting for years, once you're legally wed, things will feel official. It might just be a slight shift or it could feel like a noticeable change, but it will definitely seem like the real deal.

Mother-of-the-Bride
Whether you’re an experienced MOB or this is your first time, preparing for your daughter’s wedding may be hard to navigate. Many mothers struggle with knowing exactly what their role as Mother-of-the-Bride entails, and to be honest, there’s no hard and fast list of duties. It all comes down to how involved you feel comfortable being and how involved your daughter wants you to be. With that said, here’s our list of situations you might
encounter in your role as Mother-of-the-Bride and how to handle them. Planning Planning the big day is a roller coaster of emotions – there’s excitement, stress, joy, anxiety, and a million and one things to do. As the MOB, helping with wedding planning and organizing is like that 4th grade science project you helped out with all Continued on page 34

those years ago times a hundred. You may be more or less involved depending on your daughter, but either way you’ll likely be a part of the planning process, which can include helping plan the guest list, picking colors, venues, linens, cake flavors, bridal shower, dress shopping, and more! Just ask your daughter what SHE wants your help with. Support One of your many roles as Mother-of-the-Bride is to provide support for your daughter. Whether it’s stress from planning or just pre-wedding jitters, you have the opportunity to share your experience with her and remind her that everything will be all right. Support her choices when it comes to wedding planning even if you don’t agree because at the end of the day it’s her wedding not your chance to relive yours. Family Traditions This is your opportunity to share any family traditions or heirlooms with your daughter. Family traditions are a great way to combine your family’s past with your daughter’s future, but remember that your job is to provide advice and knowledge about these traditions, not to become the enforcer. For some brides family tradition is everything, but for others it’s not something they want to incorporate into their wedding day. Just do your best to be open to whatever your daughter decides. Whatever your role as MOB entails, trust your instincts, and don’t sweat the small stuff. However, if you do find yourself a little overwhelmed, take a look at our Wedding Planning Checklist. This will help you help your daughter know everything she needs to consider, and then ask her where she’d like your assistance.

Bridezillas
• I had a friend that threw a temper tantrum, complete with screaming and foot stomping, because her grandmother had the audacity to die a few hours before her wedding. She said it would throw off the seating arrangements, because now there would be a big empty space. • My G/F’s mother’s wedding two years ago her future brother-in-law was missing for two weeks. He was supposed to be the best man, but on a delivery he vanished and no one knew where he went. That morning her future husband got a call that the police had found him. He had been shot two times and died in a ditch, the delivery truck full of packages was gone. The husband was horrified and told the bride that he can’t get married today. She slapped him and stormed out screaming that she can’t believe the HE could be so selfish that today wasn’t just about him and his stupid brother. Shoes
The land mine to avoid when purchasing your shoes is making sure they do not pinch in the toe box or rub the top, tip and sides of your toes. That could lead to the formation of blisters and corns. So make sure you have enough wiggle room in the toe box of the shoe. If the shoes are too narrow or wide, by the end of your night your feet will probably be screaming at you to take them off. Feet can swell after being on them all day. Blisters and corns can form on the toes due to constant rubbing, friction and the toes trying to grab the floor of the shoe for stability. If you have developed bunions or hammer toes over the years you now have to accommodate those bony issues when buying your shoes. Having a narrow heel can also cause problems when buying shoes because of heel slippage. Bunions can trigger the big toe joint to get red, swollen and painful by the end of the night. Hammer toes can increase the chance of developing blisters. Shoes that are too wide can cause the balls of your feet to slide and burn because of excess movement within the toe
box area of the shoe. Wedding shoes that have too steep of a pitch such as 4-5 inch heel can initiate muscle spasms in the arch, pain in the ball of the foot and toe cramping. That is because the muscles in the arch of your foot are getting tired and are beginning to fatigue from the stress of being on your feet that day. Most women will throw caution to the wind and think, who cares it’s my wedding day and I can endure any minor foot pain. However, it is always better to wear wedding shoes that are comfortable, supportive and will last the entire night. This Is How You Do It! Always look for shoes with soft leather because the last thing you want to do is break in your wedding shoes. Placing over-the-counter arch supports in your shoes is the best way to prevent muscle spasms and arch fatigue during the wedding day. They will also reduce the burning or ball of the foot pain from wearing 4-5 inch heels. An additional benefit is that there should be less jamming, redness and swelling of the great toe joint due to the acute pitch of the shoe. An added bonus is that they can also take leg and low back fatigue away too after a long night of partying! Bring your wedding shoes with you if you buy them at a local store to insure proper fitmaking sure there is enough room for both your foot and the arch support, some products can be too bulky. Buying arch supports online is another option and there are arch products that can just fit in the arch of the wedding shoe regardless of heel height or style. Just peel the adhesive backing off and stick them in. When online type in key words such as, arch supports for fashion footwear, instant arch support or arch support for high heels or wedding shoes. Another way to provide your feet with instant comfort is to place a soft thin inner sole in your shoes they will reduce friction and burning as well as provide extra padding. And she walked happily down the aisle with her feet feeling great and said “I Do!”

LCCC Dean Receives Diversity Award submitted by DENISE M. REIFINGER
Dr. Andra Basu, interim dean for the School of Humanities and Social Sciences at Lehigh Carbon Community College, has been honored with the 2017 Insight Into Diversity Giving Back Award for Administrators. Dr. Basu chairs the college’s Diversity Committee, which was established last year to address one of the college’s strategic and presidential priorities to increase diversity on campus, student demographics, staff hiring and general awareness. She has worked closely with faculty, students and staff across campus and ensures the committee’s work closely aligns with the priorities of the college president Dr. Ann D. Bieber. This award is the only national award that honors college and university administrators for their commitment to diversity. Dr. Thomas Meyer, LCCC vice president for Academic Services and Student FEBRUARY 16, 2017 || townandcountrygazette.com
Development, nominated Dr. Basu because of her leadership, dedication and demonstration of outstanding social responsibility throughout the LCCC campus and community. She will be recognized in the upcoming April 2017 “Leadership Support and Giving Back” issue of Insight Into Diversity magazine, a higher education diversity and inclusion magazine and website.
