From the Editor’s Desk
Joe Korba
This is our annual wedding edition which holds some special relevance for me this year. As some of you readers may know, my fiancé Jess and I are finally getting hitched in October after seven or so years of dating. I can’t wait to marry her, of course, but beyond all of the romance and other whimsical stuff, getting married is hard work – so many decisions to make! From what color the napkins are, to what style chairs you’d like and dozens of other things that I never even considered in my male aloofness. That’s where the professionals come in, and man do we have some great ones featured in this issue. Whenever the wedding planning anxiety begins to creep insidiously into my brain, I reassure myself by thinking about how awesome the people Jess and I hired are at their jobs. From our photographers, to our florist, to our Pastor – these people are awesome – like Harvey Keitel’s character in Pulp Fiction, they straight up take care of business. When I first started hiring folks and signing contracts, I was struck by how great the customer experience is.
Page 3
Seriously, people who work in the wedding “industry” are some of the most confident, onpoint people I’ve ever dealt with. I can’t overstate how important that swagger is when you are sweating out the details of your impending nuptials. I hope you guys all dig this issue, and if you are planning on popping the question, or looking for a venue, florist, whatever, make sure to check out our great advertisers and also our wedding feature on pages 28 & 29. Enjoy!

Brandi Jo Norris (Tassone) and Chad Matthew Norris were married in Frederick MD, on June 5, 2011. The bride and groom are both prior military (Army), Brandi Jo was in the Signal Branch while Chad was Airborne/Infantry. The couple dated for nearly three years and were engaged on August 7, 2010. Brandi Jo and Chad were hiking on the Appalachian Trail that day and stopped to take a few photos. Chad had set up the camera, but instead of hitting the delay button, he set the camera to record. He proposed to Brandi Jo and filmed the memorable moment for them to watch over and over again.

NL Little Theatre Presents Dirty Rotten Scoundrels: March 14-16 Submitted by ANDREW KERN Northern Lehigh Little Theatre proudly presents Dirty Rotten Scoundrels, a 2004 musical adaptation of the hit 1988 film starring Michael Caine and Steve Martin. The comedic stage show centers on two con men living on the French Riviera. Lawrence Jameson makes his lavish living by talking rich ladies out of their money. Freddy Benson more humbly swindles women by waking their compassion with fabricated stories about his grandmother's failing health. After meeting on a train, they attempt to work together only to find that this small French town isn't big enough for the two of them. They agree on a settlement: the first one to extract $50,000 from a young female target, heiress Christine Colgate, wins and the other must leave town. A hilarious battle of cons ensues that will keep audiences laughing, humming and guessing to the end! Directed by Mr. Nicholas Sander, Dirty Rotten Scoundrels stars Aidan Burke as Freddy Benson and Gavin Fricker as Lawrence Jameson, with Alexis Middaugh in the role of Christine Colgate. Additional leads include Nate Rex as Andre Thibault, Kasey Wayda as Jolene, and Dian McKinney as Muriel Eubanks, with supporting
roles from Lydia DeLong, Jamie Miller, Kelcie Kramer, Brie Williams, and Sara Hunsicker. Based on the film Dirty Rotten Scoundrels originally written by Dale Launer and Stanley Shapiro and Paul Henning, the musical was written for the stage by Jeffrey Lane with music and lyrics by David Yazbek. Performances will be held in the Northern Lehigh High School auditorium beginning on Friday, March 14 at 7 p.m., continuing Saturday, March 15 with a 2 p.m. matinee and 7 p.m. evening performance, and concluding with a 2 p.m. matinee on Sunday, March 16. Admission is $8 for students and senior citizens, $10 for adults. To order tickets, please call the box office at 610-7679832 (ext. 1259) or email littletheatretickets@gmail. com. Ticket order forms and more information regarding Northern Lehigh Little Theatre’s Dirty Rotten Scoundrels can be found on the web at www.nlsd.org. Dirty Rotten Scoundrels is presented through special arrangement with Music Theatre International (MTI).

Meet the Staff
For our annual bridal issue, it’s time to talk weddings. What’s your favorite part of the event and/or your favorite memory from either your own or one you attended in the past? Joe Korba, Associate Publisher: I'm not sure about my favorite part of the event, but I know my least favorite part of my own impending nuptials is the planning. So many details! My favorite memory (so far) is standing next to my best friend, Tom, as his best man when he married his now wife. Danielle Tepper, Publishing Assistant: I’ve worked my way up from flower girl to bridesmaid and I’ve always loved weddings, mostly the dancing—there’s just something about locking arms with your loved ones and screaming, “We are family! I got all my sistas and me!” Some of my favorite memories include hanging out with my extended family, all piled into one hotel room, when we traveled to NC for my uncle’s big day in 2004. That and being the last ones on the dance floor past midnight! Then when my best friend and former college roommate tied the knot in NJ during the 2010 Christmas blizzard, everything from picking out our dresses to sitting in the hotel bar after it was all over is just one big happy blur. Tony Pisco, Art Director: My wedding was great for many reasons (for example, it was in August, but the weather was nice and comfortable the day of the wedding) but the coolest part just was having all of our family and friends at the same place having a great time. Alice Wanamaker, Publishing Assistant: As someone who enjoys taking photographs (especially the candid, highly emotional ones), I love catching a glimpse of the groom when everyone else, including him, is watching the bride walk down the aisle.
Donna Bachman, Accounting Manager: All weddings are beautiful. One of the most beautiful weddings I attended was my niece Sarah’s, when she married Douglas Berg. It was a remote destination wedding in Jamaica. The location, sand, sun, family and fun for a week at a destination wedding was totally the most beautiful setting my husband and I ever attended. Only about 13 family members attended this great event. There was a reception held a few weeks later locally to celebrate the occasion with family and friends. Tyler Trumbauer, Staff Writer: My favorite memory from a wedding that I attended was assuming the position of Wedding Day Coordinator from my mother and now stepfather's wedding. The two decided to not see each other the night before nor the day of leading up to the ceremony. It was put upon my shoulders to shuttle each wedding party around the premises for photos without ever crossing paths. The stress of that task made that obligatory participation in the chicken dance with all the awkward relatives seem like a breeze.

Coffee Toffee Heath Cupcakes
Taste Terminology
There are five basic taste categories the taste buds perceive: Sweetness is recognized by the presence of sugar. It is very predominant in desserts, but also creates great contrast with salty and sour. Sourness can be added through a variety of acidic foods, such as vinegars and citrus fruits. Salt enhances flavor, intensifies sweetness and sup presses bitterness. Bitterness may be found in a variety of foods, includ ing chocolate and coffee. When not in balance, bitter can be offensive, but in very small quantities it adds richness and depth. Umami is described as a savory, often mouthwatering taste perceived when eating meat, fish, cheeses like parmesan and bleu and certain vegetables such as asparagus.

Bake 16 to 18 minutes or until toothpick, inserted into the center, comes out clean. Cool cupcakes in pan 5 minutes. Remove from pan and place on cooling grid to cool completely. For ganache, combine cream and instant coffee in small saucepan; stir to dissolve. Warm over medium heat until cream begins to steam; do not boil. Remove from heat and add chocolate chips; stir until smooth. Cool slightly. Place 1/2 cup ganache in disposable decorating bag. Using the handle of a wooden spoon, create a small hole in the center of each cupcake; pipe in ganache. Dip tops of cupcakes in remaining ganache; lightly shake off excess. Immediately dip cupcake in toffee bits.

D
essert is an indulgence, and when you delight in the taste, texture and aroma of a decadent sweet treat, you savor every bite. It is easy to get lost in the flavor and fragrance of rich chocolate or creamy caramel. But what happens when chocolate or caramel are paired with different flavors, like salty, sour or savory? Spurred by curiosity, the food scientists in the Wilton Test Kitchen dug deeper into unusual flavor pairings to enhance the taste experience. While the terms “taste” and “flavor” are often used interchangeably, there is a difference between the two. The taste of a food is what the taste buds perceive, while the flavor of a food is the combination of these tastes, plus the aroma and the other sensations. Treatology™ is the science of blending different flavors and tastes to create dishes that are an experience all on their own. Look for more taste, flavor and inspiration at http:// treatology.wilton.com.

Sweet and Salty Caramel Cashew Brownies Makes 15 brownies
• Caramel gets its flavor from browning sugar, butter and cream; it adds a rich, mouth-filling flavor • Cashews add nutty, roasted flavor notes • Salt reduces sweetness and increases the bitterness of the chocolate and butter in the caramel, creating a richer flavor
6 ounces semi-sweet chocolate (squares or chips) 12 tablespoons (1-1/2 sticks) butter 1 cup all-purpose flour 1/4 c up cocoa powder 1 teaspoon coarse sea salt 1-1/3 c ups granulated sugar 3 eggs 1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract 2/3 cup cashews, chopped plus additional for garnish 15 soft caramel candies Preheat oven to 350°F. Prepare 9-inch x 9-inch pan with parchment paper. In a large saucepan, melt chocolate and butter over low heat, stirring to combine. Cool slightly. In a small bowl, stir together flour, cocoa powder and salt. Add sugar, eggs and vanilla to chocolate mixture. Stir until well combined. Add flour mixture; stir until just incorporated. Stir in cashews. Pour into prepared pan. Bake 24 to 28 minutes or until toothpick inserted into the center comes out nearly clean. While brownies bake, unwrap caramel candies and roll each one out until it is 1/8 inch in thickness. Cut with medium sized Leaf Cut-Outs cutter. Remove brownies from oven and immediately top with caramel cut outs, arranging in 3 rows of five. Position a cashew on each caramel. Return to oven for 1 minute. Remove from oven. Cool on cooling grid until just barely warm. Cut into 1-1/2-inch x 3-inch rectangles and serve warm or at room temperature.

Lehigh Township Watch
Submitted by CINDY MILLER The Lehigh Township Board of Supervisors will vote on adopting an ordinance to rezone some properties along Route 248 in the Cherryville area from Village Residential to General Commercial during their Feb. 11 meeting. Concerned residents attended the January Planning Commission meeting and asked the following questions: “Why would the Board of Supervisors and the Planning Commission want to extend the General Commercial zone in Cherryville from Turkey Hill to include the Old Post Office down to and include Hope Lutheran Church and the Fire Company lots?” The township is primarily an agriculture/rural residential community. Extending the General Commercial zone affords the township the opportunity for commercial development in an area that makes sense while improving the Old Post Office property and the Route 248 and Blue Mountain Drive intersection. “Will a reclassification to general commercial zone cause a tax increase for the residential properties?” The answer is no. Zoning does not determine the value of a tax. Those residential properties impacted by the change will continue to pay the same tax value as they do today. The change will benefit the property owner should they decide to open a commercial type business on the residential property or if they are approached by a developer interested in purchasing their property. “Does the zoning change make our residential properties vulnerable for the government to come in and take our land through eminent domain?” The answer is no. It is not the intention of Lehigh Township to take any of the properties by eminent domain. If anything, the General Commercial zone should increase the value of the property and give the owner more bargaining power with interested buyers. A commercial property is usually higher priced than a residential property.

Lehigh Township Elementary School Teacher To Celebrate 100th Birthday Submitted by CINDY DEPPE Mrs. Marion Burkhardt, a former devoted school teacher in Lehigh Township for approximately 33 years, will be celebrating her 100th birthday on March 7. Former students are organizing a card shower for her to help celebrate her birthday and show her how she has touched so many lives. This would be the perfect time to send a card to her letting her know how important she was in your life while growing up in Lehigh Township. Mrs. Burkhardt taught in Lehigh Township starting in 1936, in the one-room schoolhouse at St. Paul's in Indianland teaching grades one through eight. Later, Mrs. Burkhardt taught in the two-room schoolhouse in Treichlers. Mrs. Burkhardt taught kindergarten at the new Lehigh Township Elementary School starting in 1956 until retiring in 1969.
Happy 100th birthday to our beloved Lehigh Township Elementary School Kindergarten teacher, Mrs. Marion Burkhardt, who made learning fun.

It is the rule that men keep themselves more in the house through the winter. Often they sit very [much] in the wife’s way in the kitchen. This is the time of the year to replace a tooth in the rake that was hung away last summer. Soon it will be garden digging [time] and it surely will not go well with a rake with a tooth broken out. Then it’s also a good time to see to it that a new handle is put on that showel which had one split

off last summer. O yes, out in the barn lies that chain that was torn last summer and you did not take the time to put in a new link. She still lies there behind the door. Look around a little, you can still find more of such things to fix up. This is a good time to do it. [This may also be good advice for men, when they retire. Find something to do, so that you are not in your wives’ way, when you spent more time at home. Yes?] If you want to have some fun evenings when you are sitting around, here are a few things you could repeat. One calls this, “tongue twisters”, in English. What is the name in Dutch? Who knows? [Why not the word, ‘tongue-turner’/‘tonguetwister’ or ‘tongue-breaker’, the last word more like Std. Ger.?] “How would wives wash diapers, if the water would be wine?” “Behind the hickory wood pile, I heard a hundred rabbits coughing.” “Butcher, sharpen the scythe with water; with a wet whetstone, whet the scythe.” Here is an old proverb that I think would be good to go on [rely on]. “Don’t go in deeper water than you can wade through.” You all know what that means. [Similar to “Don’t get in over your head.”]

Indianland Garden Club History
Submitted by BEVERLY PUTT The Indianland Garden Club was organized in 1954 by a small group of women of Lehigh Township. The group held their first meeting at the Lehigh Township Volunteer Fire Company in Cherryville. Through the years, the club also held its meetings at the Harmony Grange in Pennsville and St. Paul's UCC of Indianland. Presently, meetings are held at Hope Lutheran Church in Cherryville. The first president was Olive Strohl. Jean Silfies, who still resides in Lehigh Township, was a charter member and the club's third president. Since that first year, 28 women have served as club president and many members have served in the duties of maintaining a garden club. Starting its 60th anniversary year, the first meeting in March will be held at Hope Lutheran Church in Cherryville on March 18. At the present time, there are approximately forty members. The club is comprised of men and women and new members are always welcome. Over the years, there have been many interesting and informative presentations. Again, this year, informative programs with fresh new ideas are planned. If you are thinking about your spring garden and landscape projects, consider joining the Indianland Garden Club this year for some helpful hints and important information. Mark your calendar for the first garden club meeting in 2014 for Tuesday, March 18, at 7 p.m.

Safe Haven Pet Rescue Adoption Day At Tractor Supply
Submitted by CARLY LAMOSO Safe Haven Pet Rescue will hold an adoption days from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Sunday, March 2 and 16 at Tractor Supply on Rt. 209 in Brodheadsville. Safe Haven will have many young dogs available for you to meet and get to know. Safe Haven requires a pre-adoption application with references and a home visit prior to adoption. Safe Haven Pet Rescue is a small group of dedicated volunteers from the West End of the Poconos who save highly adoptable dogs from high kill and overcrowded shelters and finds them loving homes. Shelter killing is the number one cause of dog deaths and Safe Haven has saved more than 700 lives so far. Safe Haven Rescue needs volunteers to help with adoption days, fundraising, transporting dogs to vets and groomers and fostering homeless dogs until they find their forever homes. Help save homeless dogs. For more information about Safe Haven, to find a list of dogs available for adoption, and for adoption applications, please visit www.SafeHavenPa.org. The Search Is On For Pennsylvania’s Outstanding Senior Volunteer Submitted by KRISTIN DANLEY-GREINER Every day, Pennsylvania senior volunteers generously give their time and service to help others. Now here’s your chance to give back by nominating a deserving older adult in your community for his or her outstanding service through the Salute to Senior Service® program. Sponsored by Home Instead, Inc., the franchisor of the Home Instead Senior Care® network, Salute to Senior Service recognizes the invaluable contributions of adults aged 65 and older who give at least 15 hours a month of volunteer service to their favorite causes. “Seniors have so much to give and make a positive impact on our communities daily,” said Suzanne Boline, R.N., owner of the Home Instead Senior Care office serving Northampton County. “Senior volunteerism not only benefits others, but also helps seniors stay active and socially engaged in their communities—important elements of healthy aging.” Members of the community are asked to nominate and vote for these everyday heroes now through March 1 at www.SalutetoSeniorService. com. State winners will be determined by popular vote. A panel of senior care experts will then
select a national Salute to Senior Service winner from among the state honorees. Home Instead, Inc. will donate $500 to each of the state winners’ designated and approved nonprofit organizations and their personal stories will be shared online on the Salute to Senior Service Wall of Fame. In addition, $5,000 will be donated to the national winner’s designated and approved nonprofit charity. To complete and submit an online nomination form for a senior aged 65 or older who volunteers at least 15 hours a month and to view the contest’s official rules, visit www.SalutetoSeniorService. com. Completed nomination forms can alternatively be mailed to Salute to Senior Service, P.O. Box 285, Bellevue, NE 68005. For more information about Salute to Senior Service or the Home Instead Senior Care network’s services, call your local Home Instead Senior Care at 610-759-7333.

I’ve never planned a wedding, but I’ve witnessed a friend or two tear their hair out as they prepare for their special day. Short of hiring Jennifer Lopez to handle all the details, there are ways to come up with some adorable and easy-to-execute ideas for making the event as memorable and personalized as possible. And it all starts with a little website called Pinterest. For our annual bridal issue, we are proud to present this hodge-podge of brilliant bits of creativity for all the brides-tobe out there. The Happiest Day
Harry was finally a groom and was very excited about his upcoming marriage. He was on his way out of the office when his boss came over to him with an outstretched hand. “Congratulations Harry, I just wanted to tell you I’ve been married for 22 years and I’m sure that you will always remember this day with the fondest of memories, as the happiest day of your life.” “But sir,” said Harry, a little bit confused. “I’m not getting married until tomorrow!” “Yeah, I know,” said his boss.

Rescue Pet
Meet Hunca Munca Starting Over Animal Rescue (SOAR) in Schnecksville Domestic Short Hair • Young • Female • Medium Hunca Munca is two years old. She was rescued from a construction company yard where she and her siblings were almost squashed. She has been living with her foster family who would love to keep her, but several of their own cats are mean to her. Hunca loves cat-friendly dogs, especially little ones! She loves to play dolls or Legos with animal-friendly children. She is shy to strangers, but does not take long to warm up and she loves to sleep with someone in bed. She deserves a forever home to call her own where she can sleep in bed without another cat chasing her away. She is spayed/neutered and up to date on shots. Senior Citizens Corner New Technologies Helping More Seniors Age-in-Place
(StatePoint) Nearly 90 percent of people 50 years old and up want to remain at home as long as possible, according to a recent AARP study. If you have an aging parent or grandparent, discussing his or her alternatives is important. However, remember, it can be a sensitive subject, especially when he or she has lived in the same place for a long time. Therefore, before broaching the issue, be sure you understand all the options that might allow for aging-in-place at home. “If you’re considering an assisted living facility for a loved one, make sure you look at new technologies first to see if you can help he or she remain independent, secure and connected from the comfort of home,” says Walt Podsiedlak, Health and Wellness Sales Manager at Linear LLC, a leading provider of wired and wireless security technology for seniors. This starts by discussing the greatest challenges your loved one faces, such as mobility, personal care and meals, and determining what kind of technology or service addresses those specific needs.
www.townandcountrygazette.com | February 20, 2014
One of the most widely used technologies by individuals aging-in-place are personal emergency reporting systems (PERS), that can send for help in an emergency, amongst other functions. PERS devices have made significant leaps since TV commercials first popularized them in the 1980s. For example, new systems like the Linear PERS-4200 console still connect a wrist or necklace pendant to a central monitoring station for push-button emergency reporting, but useful new features have also been added. Here are some features to look for and consider when picking the right PERS technology: • Temperature sensors can provide alerts to update central stations of hazardous conditions. • An activity timer can be programmed to send a signal if a preset amount of time elapses before either an activity transmitter is triggered or the console’s “home” button is pressed. • Audible reminder messages can be set on a recurring schedule to highlight doctor’s visits, when medication should be taken or even social activities. • Some consoles can serve as speaker phones, allowing for convenient communication. • Take note of the range between a transmitter and a console. For example, if your mom likes to garden, be sure the range of the PERS is wide enough to include the yard. • Transmitters can be wristbands, pendants, belt attachments or even appear as jewelry. 10th ANNUAL BASKET SOCIAL

Discuss what would serve your loved one most conveniently. • Consider the battery life of the transmitter and if it’s waterproof. • As for cost, users should expect to pay an installation fee, and a monthly PERS monitoring charge. PERS device repair and replacement policies should also be considered. More information can be found at www. LinearCorp.com. Aging-in-place technology is truly shaping the future for seniors. Tips For Taming Your Winter Allergies Submitted by DR. JOAN LEHACH, MD. As frigid temperatures and unusually snowy conditions over much of the nation continue to keep many Americans indoors, a veteran allergy expert reminds us that staying inside may keep us warm, but it also us gives us prolonged exposure to four powerful indoor allergens capable of triggering a variety of cold and flu-like symptoms. "If you experience more than nine days of continuing congestion, coughing, sneezing, watery eyes and nasal drip, chances are good that you are reacting to the presence of either dust mites, cockroaches, animal dander, or mold somewhere in your home, office or school," said Dr. Joan Lehach, integrative medicine physician specializing in allergy, asthma and clinical 5 immunology at Montefiore Medical Center in New York. "Many Woodlawn Memorial Park 1500 Airport Rd. Allentown PA 18109 times, and especially in the inner city where populations are dense, all four of these allergens are present and must be addressed." Can the HIMYM spin-off work?
As was first reported in late October, the rumored “How I Met Your Mother” spin-off is, in fact, no longer just a rumor— there’s officially a pilot in the works. The new sub-series will hold many of the same elements of the original: A group of friends share their life experiences in Manhattan, as the female lead searches for her true love. It might even feature the iconic MacLaren’s Pub. “How I Met Your Dad” (way to keep the phrasing consistent) has no confirmed plans to include any of our favorite characters from HIMYM and this is why I’m skeptical about its shot at success. One of the co-creators, Craig Thomas, told Entertainment Weekly earlier this year, “There’s a world where the universe of the show can keep existing in a way that feels coherent to what’s come before, but new enough to be worth watching.” There’s only one way for me to agree with that: The Father has to be Ted Mosby. It’s one thing to completely regurgitate a sitcom plot just for the sake of a few laughs, but it just comes across as lazy unless there’s something tying us in out of loyalty (like our blind affection for Joey Tribbiani). After following Ted’s looooong quest to find the love of his life, the only thing that would interest me in the flip-side of that experience would be seeing what it was like for the Mother with Cristin Milioti in the starring role. To see all those glimpses of the future from her perspective. Hell, Josh Radnor would be free from a contract
obligation for at least the first few seasons, because he would be a mystery to us until the end. Well, not a complete mystery. We would watch their small moments of “fate” with ond recognition—and then we would welcome him back with open arms. Now that could work. But we already know that’s not happening because the starring role just went to Greta Gerwig. It was bittersweet to watch the Jan. 27 episode (entitled “How Your Mother Met Me”) because it held all the potential of a spin-off—or at least a successful model of how the current season could’ve went. But no, we had to deal with Sherri Shepherd and the Seuss-inspired disaster episode. I’ve never seen a spin-off work (although Angel did last for five seasons) and I have even less faith in a spin-off that essentially has nothing to do with its predecessor, but I suppose we’ll have to wait and see. The final season of HIMYM is airing now on Mondays at 9 on CBS.

Wedding Registry 101 (Family Features) For engaged couples, it can seem as if there are a million things to accomplish before the big day arrives. One essential piece of the wedding puzzle involves creating a registry that makes it easy for guests to celebrate your union with gifts that reflect your personality as a couple. Before Building Your Registry It's no wonder why guests love the ease and simplicity of a gift registry. But many couples may not know where to begin when setting out to create this useful list. Here are some helpful pointers from Macy's to help you get started on creating a perfect

wedding registry: * Meet with a Consultant: These trained professionals are on site to assist and discuss everything you want and need. It's a good place to start if you have questions on what items to include and what brands are available. * Look for Special Programs: Some stores offer special features, such as Macy's, whose Dream Fund allows guests to contribute any amount to the ultimate gift card, so the bride and groom can later choose exactly what they want. * Start Early: Most couples like to register 4-6 months before their wedding date, which allows more time for choosing items, planning for showers and meeting other deadlines. * Register Together: Whether it's in-store, online or both - make a day of it and have fun selecting all the things that will be part of your new life together. * Choose Different Price Points: Guests will appreciate a varied list that has many gift options to fit their personal budget. * Create a Registry That Reflects You: If you're a laid-back, easygoing couple, consider registering for a more casual dinnerware pattern that you can use every day, then mix in some fancy pieces to use for those special occasions. If you enjoy entertaining friends and family, be sure to choose a range of serveware and barware.

Making the Right Choices With all the things needed to properly stock your home, selecting the right ones can seem overwhelming. Here are some tips to keep in mind while adding to your registry: * Select Your Settings: A five-piece setting is meant to serve one person and includes a dinner plate, salad plate, bread and butter plate, tea cup and saucer. If you want to serve eight guests, you will need to register for eight five-piece settings. * Factor in Some Extras: When registering for drinkware, be sure to register for a few extras in each glass size in case some break down the road. * Protect Your Cutlery: Be sure to choose a sturdy cutting board to protect your knife blades from chips and cracks. You can keep your cutlery in top condition by registering for a honing steel and knife sharpener. * Stock Up on Kitchen Must-Haves: When it comes to cookware, make sure to stock up on the essentials. This should include a fry pan, saute pan, grill pan, sauteuse (round, deep-sided design for sauteing on the stovetop or baking in the oven) and a chef's pan. * Opt for the Basics: White dinnerware allows you to transform the look of your table year-round by changing the decor and accessories around it. The classic look will be a design that you can appreciate for years to come. Visit www.macys.com/registry for a full registry checklist, helpful tips and more information on Macy's Dream Fund.

Extra Point by Tyler Trumbauer
The New K-Kid On the Block
Ever since Mark Scisly left coaching in the Lehigh Valley Conference back in 2004, he has always wanted to get back into the LVC. Last week, his wish came true as the Northampton Area School District School Board voted unanimously on Feb. 11 to approve the hiring of Scisly as their new head football coach. Scisly, who replaces Jeff Brosky (who resigned after last season), brings with him an impressive resume that he feels will serve him well. “I got a head coaching job when I was 25 years old and I think I really learned by doing it with trial and error,” he said. “Ten years of being a head coach gives me a pretty good idea of what I am doing. I am going to bring a little bit from every program that I have been a part of.” The Ursinus College and West Chester University graduate felt his first success on the gridiron in high school as a player at Southern

Columbia Area High School where he was a four-year starter that played in three state championship games. He also was named to the A.P. All-State team three times. He went on to play at Ursinus College where again he was a four-year starter and in 1998 was named the Co-Offensive MVP of the team. His first coaching experience came right there at Ursinus as he coached the offensive line and tight ends from August of 2001 until March of 2003, which is when he made his impression on the LVC as the offensive line coach for Northampton for the 2003-04 season before getting his first head coaching position. He went on to coach the Salisbury Falcons from 2004 to January of 2008 where he really made a name for himself. Scisly is the program’s all-time leading coach for playoff victories and playoff appearances. He turned a program around that was winless and made them into Eastern Conference Champions in just three years. His last stop trumped them all as he piloted the Boyertown Area football program for the last six years. During that time, he flipped a program that was 1-11 in 2007 into Pac 10 Conference Champions in 2010. He set a school record for wins in a season in 2010 and also set school records for Continued on Page 46

Conference and I really wanted to be a part of it. I always heard good things about the kids there and I hope to turn things around.” Scisly will have his hands full with a K-Kids football program that has struggled recently and went winless in 2013, but he has been known to be the master of resurrection as he turned both Salisbury and Boyertown from basement dwellers to champions, which he said is something he likes to do and he wants to do it here. “I knew I wanted to be in the LVC,” he said. “I kept working and working up towards it. I put in my time and was a head coach for ten years. Hopefully all that hard work pays off for me.” Scisly’s hard work has netted a great return thus far as it has landed him his dream job. He hopes the players put in as much work so it pays out in dividends for them, in the form of wins, on the gridiron.

Tips For Taming Your Winter Allergies Continued from Page 38 3. Dry up dust mites: Keep your indoor humidity at 50 percent or lower, as higher humidity will breed dust mites. A humidity gauge can be purchased for about $5. 4 Filter out animal dander: If you have a pet allergy, you probably are going to need to be on allergy medications until you can consult with an allergist and see if you want to be desensitized or not. Meanwhile, a small HEPA air purifier placed in each room will keep airborne dander from spreading throughout the house. Mice or other fur-bearing pests living under the house or in the attic must be searched for and removed. 5. Get symptom relief: A mixture of sinus-friendly Chinese herbs, like Rootology, can temporarily halt most allergy symptoms in less than 20 minutes. Rootology can also be used to control winter cold and flu symptoms. 6. Start an immune-building diet: Eliminate foods that are weakening your immune system, like processed and packaged foods, and start eating immune boosting, allergy fighting foods, like blackberries and blueberries. Also important are multivitamin supplements and digestive enzymes to help you access more of the nutrients in the food you consume. 7. Get sufficient sleep: Our immune system is very "sleep-driven", and allergies are precipitated by weakened immunity. 8 Stay hydrated: When you become dehydrated you get dry nasal mucosa and can develop microscopic cracks in the nasal lining, making it easier for allergens to enter your bloodstream. 9. Use the "hot" setting: Wash your bedding in hot water (at least 130 degrees) to properly neutralize allergens. 10 Wash your face and hands: Not only to maintain popularity with family, friends, and co-workers, but if there is dander, mold, or dust on your face or hands, chances are good that you will end up inhaling it.
