9th Annual Keep Slatington Beautiful Clean Up Day Canceled The Slatington Parks & Recreation Commission regrets to announce that the 9th Annual Keep Slatington Beautiful Clean-Up Day previously scheduled for Saturday April 25 has been canceled due to the Covid-19 Pandemic. The cleanup held yearly in conjunction with Earth Day helps beautify public recreation areas and the Slatington Business District along Main Street in Slatington. Since many areas included in the cleanup are wooded, and vegetation grows in thick beginning in May, the event will not be rescheduled to a later date. However, since many residents are using the trails more frequently with time off from work, and the desire to get out of the house, the recreation commission urges residents to take a garbage bag along on their next outing and consider picking up trash on their walks. That way the spirit of the annual cleanup can be accomplished while at the same time maintaining social distancing. Areas that had been scheduled to be cleaned this year were borough owned and operated recreation facilities in the borough and included the Walnut Street Playground, West End Playground, Victory Park, The Fish Pond, Slatington Memorial Park, Slatington Trailhead, and the Slate Heritage Trail from the Slatington Trailhead continuing westward to the borough line, along with portions of the D&L Trail in Slatington. If you frequent any of these areas on your walks or have some spare time please consider taking a few minutes and picking up litter and trash in these areas. Together we can Keep Slatington Beautiful!

Consumer Alert: Beware of Scams During Covid-19 During the current COVID-19 pandemic, fraudsters, and unscrupulous contractors can take advantage of people’s fear and uncertainty. The Carbon Builders Association would like to remind homeowners to protect themselves from scammers who may be out there and are trying to take advantage of the virus pandemic. Construction and Remodeling has been deemed non-essential for major portions of the industry. Much home construction and remodeling work in Pennsylvania is not considered life-sustaining during the pandemic. However, during this crisis, contractors can perform emergency repairs. Some contractors, and services have either received waiver or have been determined as an essential service. “Unfortunately, scammers often use a natural disaster or a crisis to solicit door to door, distribute flyers, or offer services via the internet, phone calls or other means. Additionally, the stimulus checks, that many may soon be receiving, can increase the likelihood that scammers will be looking for other opportunities.

Unfortunately, there are some that will exploit a crisis like the current pandemic. We are hopeful that if we call attention to the possibility of being approached or solicited by someone, our community can stay safe and vigilant. STEPS YOU CAN TAKE TO PROTECT YOURSELF: • Use a contractor that is a member of the Carbon Builders Association and is registered with the Pennsylvania Attorney General’s Office. Pets and Coronavirus

SOURCE: Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC)

Studies have shown that the bond between people and their pets can increase fitness, lower stress, and bring happiness to their owners. During this coronavirus period however some people are expressing concerns about having pets. According to the CDC: In the United States, there is no evidence to suggest that any animals, including pets, livestock and wildlife, might be a source of COVID-19 infection at this time. However, because all animals can carry germs that can make people sick, it’s always a good idea to practice healthy habits around pets and other animals.

Germansville Fire Co. Hall Rental for All Occasions • Party Sizes of 10-350 • Off Street Parking 610-767-7757 germansvillefire@gmail.com find us on

• Wash your hands after handling animals, their food, waste, or supplies. • Practice good pet hygiene and clean up after pets properly. • Talk to your veterinarian if you have questions about your pet’s health. For more information, visit CDC’s “Healthy Pets, Healthy People” website, which was created to educate pet owners about some of the risks associated with animals and to provide tips on how they can be safe with their pets. Protect pets if you are sick If you are sick with COVID-19 (either suspected or confirmed), you should restrict contact with pets and other animals, just like you would around other people. Although there have been no reports of pets becoming sick with COVID-19 in the United States, it is still recommended that people sick with COVID-19 limit contact with animals until more information is known about the virus. This can help ensure both you and your animals stay healthy. • When possible, have another member of your household care for your animals while you are sick. • Avoid contact with your pet including, petting, snuggling, being kissed or licked, and sharing food. • If you must care for your pet or be around animals while you are sick, wash your hands before and after you interact with them.

Practicing Gratitude / Ways to Improve Positivity SOURCE: NIH.gov

How often do you feel thankful for the good things in your life? Studies suggest that making a habit of noticing what’s going well in your life could have health benefits. Taking the time to feel gratitude may improve your emotional well-being by helping you cope with stress. Early research suggests that a daily practice of gratitude could affect the body, too. For example, one study found that gratitude was linked to fewer signs of heart disease. The first step in any gratitude practice is to reflect on the good things that have happened in your life. These can be big or little things. It can be as simple as scoring a good parking space that day or enjoying a hot mug of coffee. Or, perhaps you feel grateful for a close friend’s compassionate support. Next, allow yourself a moment to enjoy that you had the positive experience, no matter what negatives may exist in your life. Let positive feelings of gratitude bubble up. “We encourage people to try practicing gratitude daily,”advises Dr. Judith T. Moskowitz, a psychologist at Northwestern University.“You can try first thing in the morning or right before you fall asleep, whatever is best for you.” Moskowitz has been studying the impact of keeping a daily gratitude journal on stress relief and health. Practicing gratitude is part of a set of skills that her research team encourages people to practice. These skills have been shown to help some people increase their positive emotions. Her team is trying to better understand how a daily boost in positive emotions can help people cope with stress and improve their mental and physical health. When you make gratitude a regular habit, it can help you learn to recognize good things in your life despite the bad things that might be happening.

Moskowitz says that when you’re under stress, you might not notice all the moments of positive emotion that you experience. With her research program, she’s trying to help people become more aware of those moments of positive feelings. “Put some effort into experiencing gratitude on a daily basis and see how it goes,” Moskowitz advises. “It might just surprise you that—despite how bad things are—there are things you feel grateful for alongside it.” And feeling grateful may help improve both your mind and your body.

at NCC, to represent the college in the Mid-Atlantic Junior Chaine Competition that was held March 8 at the Restaurant School in Philadelphia. In this juried contest, each competitor receives a mystery box, and they must compose a menu and prepare an appetizer, main course and dessert for four people. Traupman took home a bronze medal. Knowing she could pick only one representative per college, Traupman came to mind right away. He had competed in the past with his partner Matthew Kirby in China for the International Young Chefs Association Challenge back in October 2019, where they also took home Bronze. They were the only team in the competition representing the United States. "This was another competition he could add to his resume. He will be able to do more like this, and he was able to network with people from all over Mid-Atlantic region," said Marz. Traupman plans to attend Johnson and Wales to pursue a bachelor's in culinary arts. NCC's culinary program continues to elevate the culinary program and take advantage of more opportunities like this for our students. Visit northampton.edu/culinaryarts.htm.

The Best Decluttering Advice We’ve Heard (excerpted) SOURCE: OWN By: Staff, Oprah.com

In order to maintain a clutter-free home, you need to get to the root of why things pile up in the first place. The NEAT Method founders Molly Graves and Ashley Murphy believe that most people fall into the following clutter personalities: Too Busy = Too Many Extras: You buy items you already own because you don’t have a system in place for where to store them or, when you need to find things fast, the time to search through all the possible storage spots. Constant Worrier = Must Save Everything: You’re concerned that you “might” need something in the future, so you save everything, “just in case.” Overwhelmed in Life = Overwhelmed at Home: You don’t know where to begin—so you just live with the chaos. By identifying which category you fit into, you can avoid your weak spots.

Memorize this Acronym for a Clean House Purge as much clutter as possible as quickly as you can using the F.A.S.T. method. Here’s a stepby-step breakdown on how to clean house and get organized. Continued on page 14

Decluttering Continued from page 13

F: Fix a time. Schedule a time that suits everyone involved. Cleaning up is a family affair, so get everyone on board by scheduling your kick start at a time that works for everyone and make attendance mandatory! Set aside a Saturday or a Sunday, or a few hours every day, to start the process. A: Anything not used in 12 months. Face it: If you haven’t used an item in the last year, it is highly unlikely you really need it or that you are going to ever get enough use out of it to justify it

cluttering up your home. Take the plunge and get rid of it! Ask yourself these questions as you encounter each piece of clutter: • Do I use this? • How long has it been since I’ve used it? • Will I use it again? • Is it worth the space it takes up in my house? Remember: The objective is to get stuff out of your home, not to move it into another room. You will be amazed by the sheer volume of unused and unneeded items in your home. Don’t spend time inventing reasons to keep these things. S: Someone else’s stuff. It’s bad enough when clutter is your own, but it is totally crazy when the clutter belongs to someone else. Your house should not contain anything that doesn’t belong to you. If it’s something you’ve borrowed, give it back. If you’ve ended a relationship or gotten a divorce, now’s the time to let your ex’s belongings go. If your kids have established their own households, it’s time for them to pick their stuff up. T: Trash. The trash can is your friend. It is your very hungry friend. Take pride in how much you throw away and make it fun. Compete with your family members to see who tosses the most or award a prize to the best purger. Remember the goal: You only want to keep the amount of stuff that makes sense for your space. -Peter Walsh, organizing guru and author of Lose the Clutter, Lose the Weight

Why Spring Yard Clean-up is Important SOURCE: Glad.com

The idea behind spring yard work is the same as your typical household spring cleaning philosophy: out with the old, in with the new. The beginning of spring is a great time to take stock of your yard and get rid of any leftover debris from the winter season in order to make room for new growth in the warmer weather. to-do list. Step 1: Remove Thatch Once your yard is dry, use a dethatching rake to remove thatch — AKA small pieces of dead grass — that has accumulated on top of your lawn. A regular yard rake will also work for this task, though it might not be as efficient if there’s a lot of thatch to remove. If you don’t remove thatch, it can build up and block essential things like sunlight, air, and moisture from reaching your grass, making it harder for your lawn to thrive. Step 2: Prune Your Plants Next, you can begin your cleanup of existing flowers, shrubs, and other plants. Remove dead annuals and prune dead twigs and branches off of any perennials. If you don’t remove the dead bits, they could have a harder time getting proper amounts of sunlight, which can discourage new growth. Step 3: Mow When the Time Is Right Whether you’re eagerly awaiting or positively dreading the beginning of mowing season, it’s important to know when to start mowing. A good rule of thumb is to wait until it’s at least 40°F and your grass has grown 2–3 inches tall before you mow for the first time.

How Exercise Can Help You as You Age (excerpted) SOURCE: National Institute on Aging at NIH (NIH.gov)

Exercise and physical activity are good for just about everyone, including older adults. No matter your health and physical abilities, you can gain a lot by staying active. In fact, in most cases you have more to lose by not being active. Real Life Benefits of Exercise and Physical Activity Exercise and physical activity aren’t just good for your mind and body, they can help you stay active and mobile as you age! Regularly including all 4 types of exercise will give you a wide range of reallife benefits.

4 Types of Exercise

Exercise and physical activity fall into four basic categories—endurance, strength, balance, and flexibility. Doing them all will give you more benefits. ENDURANCE Endurance, or aerobic, activities increase your breathing and heart rate.

STRENGTH Try to do strength exercises for all of your major muscle groups on 2 or more days per week for 30-minute sessions each, but don’t exercise the same muscle group on any 2 days in a row. An example of an upper body strength exercise is the “Wall Push-Up” pictured here: Continued on page 18

'S muss Friehyaahr Fiewer sei— Yuscht Faulichkeet, bischur ; Die Cure iss bissel Aerwet, Un guck net an die Uhr.

From where does such a sickness come? It is easy to catch, as I understand; There are no pills for it, And it doesn’t particularly hurt.

Noh grickscht du z’rick dei Luscht, Die Welt guckt widder gut; Grickscht du ken Fehler, browier’s; Es schafft – ich weess es duht! -Ralph Funk

What does one do for it? Perhaps a little faith helps – And a little looking around At people who don’t have it easy – They are poor and lame and blind, They have no work and no money; How lucky can one be?

Spring Fever I have no joy! What fails? Yet I feel pretty good – I can eat well, sleep, And nothing is bothering me. And yet, there is something somewhere That takes my spunk away For working – makes me lazy, And leaves me sitting in the dirt. Like impatience – a sickness Very terrible for a man; And it takes an astounding struggle Until one can get over it.

Nau en Verwarning: Der Coronavirus iss en schleckder Virus; du musscht seller Artickel lese nochemol. Mir kenne net zu vorsichdich sei! Geb acht! Bleib sicher! In the last issue of Town and Country [2 April 2020] they published a piece on hand-washing during the coronavirus pandemic. That reminded me about an article that I put together years ago when I was still working. My manager put up a poster about hand-washing on the wall of the bathroom. I looked it over and saw that it was written in English, Spanish, French and two oriental languages. But no Dutch! So I went home and translated that into or beloved Dialect. And here it is: Hand-washing – Protection from disease 1. Wet your hands. 2. Put soap on the hands and rub them together for 20 seconds. 3. Rinse them off. 4. Dry them with a paper towel. 5. Use that [paper towel] to turn off the spigot. Now a warning: The coronavirus is a dangerous virus; you must read that article [in Town & Country] again. (The bulletin that I had translated was written about 10 years ago.) We cannot be too careful! Take care! Stay safe!] News@TownAndCountryGazette.com || APRIL 16, 2020

Schooling at Home during Covid-19 – Part 1 by Christine Allen, president of Reading Escapades & Math Explorers, Inc.

It’s been around a month since we have all been home with our children. In the beginning, it may have been fun – you are ALL set to help teach them at home. However, as the weeks dragged on, the wonderful teachers out there started using a variety of methods to continue learning. Regardless of what you received from the school, you are probably not sure what to do and many people are looking to the home school community. While there are many insights to be gleaned from them, home schooling does not look like “crisis schooling”, and I’ll address that in an upcoming post. Nonetheless, let’s look at different methods of teaching that can be done in your home, so you can adapt to what works best for your children. 1) School-at-home: from listening to our clients, this method is what many people are trying to replicate. This method, as the name implies, sets up your home learning environment to mimic your child’s classroom. There’s a dedicated area that has a whiteboard, a desk or table for each student, maybe some posters. Most likely there’s agenda of what to do each hour to ensure that no education is lost during this time. Who benefits the most: a child who thrives on structure, although this type

of child probably set up the system themselves (I know I did when I was in school!) 2) Unschooling: on the other end of the spectrum, this method focuses on “child-lead” learning. Many think that this means the child doesn’t do anything all day except watch TV or play video games. However, it really means that you give your child as many opportunities to introduce new topics and when they show interest, you provide the tools for them to learn more. This is an excellent way to teach during the crisis with so many organizations having free online lessons. Some of my favorites can be found at another post https://read2day.com/online-resources-to-addexcitement-to-your-time-at-home Who benefits the most: a child who doesn’t like “school” or thinks school is boring. 3) Eclectic Home Schooling: this method is a mix of the first two, and what I use with my own children. We do some worksheets/formal schooling, but most of what we do are based on their interests. Then I “sneak” in the “boring” things, but they never know it. Who benefits the most: a child who needs Continued on page 23
