Spring is the season when everything around us seems to come back to life after a long slumber. The temperature gets warmer, flowers begin to blossom and you get more hours of daylight. If you live in the cooler climates, you finally get a break from the snow and darkness of winter. So what does that mean? If you have a backyard garden, this is the perfect time to hit the ground running in readiness for the warmer months ahead. Your garden is probably in bad shape after weeks of neglect during the cold winter. There’s plenty of work that needs to be done, so get ready to get your hands dirty. Here are 6 gardening tips for early spring: #1 – Clear Debris and Litter Your first order of business will be to clear all the debris that has accumulated on your garden. garden unless they have piled up to a noticeable heap. Dead leaves can add plenty of nutrients to the soil as they decompose. #2 – Remove Weeds Your garden is probably full of weeds that took advantage of your winter inactivity. Weeds can wreak serious havoc if you allow them to thrive. It is therefore in your best interest to get rid of them as soon as you notice them. The solution is simple: The easiest way to deal with weeds is simply uprooting them. This will ensure that you not only eliminate the visible parts of each weed, but the roots and seeds as well. This reduces the chances of the weeds growing back again. #3 – Avoid Tilling Wet Soil The soil in your garden could be very wet and soggy due to excess water from melting snow and rain during the early weeks of spring. Soggy soil tends to compact easily when disturbed. The bad news is: Tilling wet soil can ruin its structure and lead to formation of hard lumps as it dries. Compacted soil drains poorly and hampers healthy root development. The good news is: You can perform a simple soil test to find out whether your garden is ready for tilling or not. Collect a small sample of soil from your garden and hold it in your hand. Tightly squeeze the sample until it forms a solid lump. Place the compacted lump of soil on a flat surface and try to poke it with your finger. If the sample remains compact even when pressure is applied, it means that the soil in your garden is too wet to till. If the sample crumbles under pressure, you can go ahead and till your garden. But don’t be too hasty.

Before you start tilling your garden, spread some organic matter such as animal manure, dead leaves or grass clippings on top of the soil. This material will improve the quality of the soil by adding nutrients and improving its texture. Start on one corner of your garden by pushing a spade about ten inches into the ground and digging out the soil. Repeat this process all the way around the perimeter of your garden. Once the whole perimeter has been tilled, you can work your way towards the center of the garden following the same circular pattern. You get the idea. #4 – Prune Unhealthy or Dead Parts Some parts of your flowering plants and shrubs may have become weak, damaged or infested by disease during winter. Removing these parts will encourage the growth of new flower buds and make your plants look more appealing. Sounds easy enough, but… You must first correctly identify the parts that need pruning to avoid harming your plants. Unhealthy flowers that need pruning will start to dry up and shed their petals or appear discolored. Limp stems that start to droop downwards or those heavily infested by insects should also be removed. You can use a pair of garden sheers to snip off such parts at the base where they are attached to the plant. A word of warning: Be careful not to cut off any flower buds, blooming flowers or any other healthy parts from the plant. #5 – Perform A Soil Test I am going to let you into a secret: Plants will grow well in soil that has a slightly acidic pH and a proper balance of all nutrients. The only way you can accurately determine the pH levels in your soil and the nutrients it lacks is by performing a few tests. You can collect a sample from your garden and take it for thorough analysis in a soil testing lab near you.

Don’t want to do that? Don’t worry, there is a solution: Alternatively, you can purchase a soil testing kit online or from your local gardening supplies store and perform the tests yourself. These tests will provide you with a detailed analysis of the pH levels and nutrient concentration of your soil. You can use this data to improve the quality of the soil by using fertilizers and soil additives to either reduce or increase the pH levels. #6 – Start Growing Your Plants Indoors Planting seeds directly in your garden can be a challenge for most people. This is because the right conditions needed for germination are difficult to achieve in an outdoor setting. Not only that: Your garden will probably be too soggy in the early spring for you to plant anything there. You can start growing your seeds indoors as you wait for the conditions to improve before transplanting them. It is a no-brainer right?! You will first need to decide how many plants you wish to grow. Always plant more seeds than the total number of plants you require because about a quarter of the seeds will not germinate.

Planting extra seeds will provide you with a back up to cover for the bad seeds that will fail to germinate. You can use plastic or paper cups as growing containers. Make sure you poke a few holes on the side and bottom of each container to allow for drainage. Don’t forget: Plants growing indoors will still need plenty of light to grow. You will have to position the plants where they will have access to sunlight a few hours each day. This could be an area close to a window or a partly enclosed porch. If this isn’t possible, you should consider installing artificial grow lights in the room where your seeds will be planted. Then: Fill the growing containers with a pre-mixed seed starting mix and plant the seeds according to the instructions on the packet. A seed starting mix can be purchased in a gardening supplies store.You should only prepare your own mix if you know exactly how to do it, never use soil from your garden to germinate seeds indoors. Lehighton Downtown Initiative’s Wine on the River The Lehighton Downtown Initiative will be hosting Wine on the River! Wine on the River is a fundraiser for the Lehighton Downtown Initiative. Post 16 Preparing for Memorial Day Services:

The American Legion Allen O. Delke Post 16 in Slatington has started planning this year’s Memorial Day activities and schedule according to Post commander Bernie Dugan. Dennis Ziegler, president of the Veterans Day and Memorial Day Committees of the Allen O. Delke Post 16, The American Legion, held their first meeting. The following officers were elected. Dennis Ziegler, President; and George Burke, Vice President. Items discussed at the meeting included replacing flags on veteran’s graves, Memorial Day weekend services, Memorial Day parade and services and participants and speakers for Memorial Day which is on May 27 this year at Union Cemetery in Slatington. Flags for the veteran’s graves will be replaced on May 5, 2019. Volunteers will leave the American Legion Post at 9:00 a.m. to replace flags on the following 12 cemeteries: Williamstown, Jacksonville, New Tripoli U.C.C., Heidelberg U.C.C., Neff’s Lutheran, 7th St. Catholic, Fairview, Friedens, Presbyterian, Washington St. Catholic, Slatedale, and Union cemeteries. Rain dates are May 12, or May 19. Anyone wishing to help please meet at the American Legion Post by 8:30 a.m. All are welcome to honor our deceased veterans. Approximately 2600 flags are scheduled to be

replaced. Each veteran from the Revolutionary War to the present day whose grave is in these cemeteries will have his grave checked, the metal grave marker checked, and flag replaced with a new one. The flags are provided by the county for Memorial Day. The county no longer provides flags for Veterans Day in November. The Sons of the American Legion Squadron 16 from the Allen O. Delke Post has taken on the responsibility of purchasing flags for Veterans Day. They are conducting various fund raisers to collect the approximately $3000.00 needed to purchase the flags. Memorial Day weekend will start with the boy scouts of the post sponsored Troop #66 offering poppies on Friday and Saturday to help disabled veterans. Sunday, May 26, the Legion Post #16, Sons of the American Legion Squadron 16, and the Legion Riders will conduct services at 9 outlying cemeteries. The Legion Auxiliary will provide lunch afterward. Monday, May 27, the Legion family will hold services at the remaining three cemeteries and at the Trout Creek covered bridge. The Slatington 99th Memorial Day parade will form up on 2nd and Main Street at 9:30 a.m. The parade to Union cemetery starts at 10:00 a.m., followed by the main service at Union cemetery. The public is invited and encouraged to attend and participate at all services.

Easter is a Christian holiday that celebrates the belief in the resurrection of Jesus Christ. In the New Testament of the Bible, the event is said to have occurred three days after Jesus was crucified by the Romans and died in roughly 30 A.D. The holiday concludes the “Passion of Christ,” a series of events and holidays that begins with Lent—a 40-day period of fasting, prayer and sacrifice—and ends with Holy Week, which includes Holy Thursday (the celebration of Jesus’ Last Supper with his 12 Apostles), Good Friday (on which Jesus’ crucifixion is observed), and Easter Sunday. significance in the Christian faith, many traditions associated with Easter date back to pre-Christian, pagan times. When Is Easter? Easter 2019 occurs on Sunday, April 21. However, Easter falls on a different date each year. Easter Sunday and related celebrations, such as Ash Wednesday and Palm Sunday, are considered “moveable feasts,” although, in western Christianity, which follows the Gregorian calendar, Easter always falls on a Sunday between March 22nd and April 25th. In Eastern Orthodox Christianity, which adheres to the Julian calendar, Easter falls on a Sunday between April 4th and May 8th each year. In some denominations of Protestant Christianity, Easter Sunday marks the beginning of Eastertide, or the Easter Season. Eastertide ends on the 50th day after Easter, which is known as Pentecost Sunday. In Eastern Orthodox branches of Christianity, Easter Sunday serves as the start of the season of Pascha (Greek for “Easter”), which ends 40 days later with the holiday known as the Feast of the Ascension.

Despite its significance as a Christian holy day, many of the traditions and symbols that play a key role in Easter observances actually have roots in pagan celebrations—particularly the pagan goddess Eostre (or Ostara), the ancient Germanic goddess of spring—and in the Jewish holiday of Passover. Religious Tradition of Easter The resurrection of Jesus, as described in the New Testament of the Bible, is essentially the foundation upon which the Christian religions are built. Hence, Easter is a very significant date on the Christian calendar. According to the New Testament, Jesus was arrested by the Roman authorities, essentially because he claimed to be the “Son of God,” although historians question this motive, with some saying that the Romans may have viewed him as a threat to the empire. He was sentenced to death by Pontius Pilate, the Roman prefect in the province of Judea from 26 to 36 A.D. Jesus’ death by crucifixion, marked by the Christian holiday Good Friday (the Friday before Easter), and subsequent resurrection three days later is said, by the authors of the gospels, to prove that he was the living son of God. In varying ways, all four of the gospels in the New Testament (Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John) state that those who believe in Jesus’ death and

resurrection are given “the gift of eternal life,” meaning that those of faith will be welcomed into the “Kingdom of Heaven” upon their earthly death. Passover and Easter Notably, Easter is also associated with the Jewish holiday of Passover, as well as the exodus of the Jews from Egypt, as described in the Old Testament. These links are clearly seen in the Last Supper, which occurred the night before Jesus’ arrest and the sufferings Jesus endured following his arrest. The Last Supper was essentially a Passover feast. as his “body” and the cup of wine they drank as his “blood.” These rituals would come to symbolize the sacrifice he was about to make in death, and became the basis for the Christian ritual of Holy Communion, which remains a fundamental part of Christian religious services. As Jesus’ arrest and execution were said to have occurred during the Jewish observance of Passover, the Easter holiday is often close to the former celebration on the Judeo-Christian calendar. Easter Traditions In western Christianity, including Roman Catholicism and Protestant denominations, the period prior to Easter holds special significance. This period of fasting and penitence is called Lent. It begins on Ash Wednesday, and lasts for 40 days (not including Sundays). The Sunday immediately prior to Easter is called Palm Sunday, and it commemorates Jesus’ arrival in Jerusalem, when followers laid palm leaves across the road to greet him. Many churches begin the Easter observance in the late hours of the day before (Holy Saturday) in

a religious service called the Easter Vigil. In Eastern Orthodox Christianity, Easter rituals start with the Great Lent, which begins on Clean Monday (40 days prior to Easter, not including Sundays). The last week of Great Lent is referred to as Palm Week, and it ends with Lazarus Saturday, the day before Palm Sunday. Palm Sunday marks the beginning of Holy Week, which ends on Easter. Easter Eggs Irrespective of denomination, there are many Easter-time traditions with roots that can be traced to non-Christian and even pagan or non-religious celebrations. Many non-Christians choose to observe these traditions while essentially ignoring the religious aspects of the celebration. Examples of non-religious Easter traditions include Easter eggs, and related games such as egg rolling and egg decorating. It’s believed that eggs represented fertility and birth in certain pagan traditions that pre-date Christianity. Egg decorating may have become part of the Easter celebration in a nod to the religious significance of Easter, i.e., Jesus’ resurrection or re-birth. Many people—mostly children—also participate in Easter egg “hunts,” in which decorated eggs are hidden.

Easter Bunny In some households, a character known as the Easter Bunny delivers candy and chocolate eggs to children on Easter Sunday morning. These candies often arrive in an Easter basket. The exact origins of the Easter Bunny tradition are unknown, although some historians believe it arrived in America with German immigrants in the 1700s. Rabbits are, in many cultures, known as enthusiastic procreators, so the arrival of baby bunnies in springtime meadows became associated with birth and renewal. Notably, several Protestant Christian denominations, including Lutherans and Quakers, have opted to formally abandon many Easter traditions, deeming them too pagan. However, many religious observers of Easter also include them in their celebrations. An Easter dinner of lamb also has historical roots, since a lamb was often used as a sacrificial animal in Jewish traditions, and lamb is frequently served during Passover. The phrase “lamb of God” is sometimes used to refer to Jesus and the sacrificial nature of his death. The early bird catches the worm A big clean up means you really clean everything. Every. Single. Thing. Get prepared to start the big cleaning project by moving all your movable furniture out of the way. Your goal is to make it so that there’s hardly anything on the floor. Divide and conquer Of course, you want to clean the whole house and garage at once, just to get the project over with. But when you are overly ambitious, you actually end up doing a less thorough job. Instead, divide your house in sections, like first floor, second floor, garden, garage, etc. Or go room by room if you want to break the project into even

smaller chunks. It’s important not to forget the garden, outdoor furniture and garage since, with warmer weather coming soon, you will be spending a lot of time outside. 3. Purge As you clean, think about each and every item you come across. Make a list of the stuff you want to keep; what can be donated, sold, or thrown away; and what you do want but can be stored elsewhere (like at a storage facility) so you can declutter and free up much needed space. 4. Be realistic and don’t forget to have fun Although there are some strange folks out there who do, most people do not like cleaning. Which makes it hard for them to bring themselves to do it…especially when it’s a major project like the Spring cleaning overhaul. We get it. But try not to be too pessimistic, and make it fun. Arts night at the library is scheduled for Monday, April 22nd at 7:00pm. Come see all the wonderful entries and who the winners are. There will be entertainment and refreshments. The Library is running a 50/50 raffle in conjunction with the Arts Night on April 22nd. Tickets are 1 ticket/$2.00 or 3 tickets for $5.00. Tickets are available at the library or from any board member. The winners will be drawn the night of the Arts Contest. The library’s book club is currently reading, “Crazy Rich Asians” Kevin Kwan. The club will meet on May 6th, at the library, at 1:00pm. Copies are available at the library and new members are always welcome. There will the observation of Holy Communion at the Maundy Thursday Service on April 18th, and a Good Friday service on April 19th. Both services are at 7PM. Easter Sunrise service will be April 21st at 7am followed by Sunday school for all ages at 9am and the Regular Easter service at 10am. The sacrament of Holy Communion will be observed at both the 7am and 10am services. Two more weeks to be a part of this program before the summer break. Christ’s Kids’ Club for kids ages 4-11 happens each Wednesday from 6PM – 7:30PM. Christ’s Kids’ Club teaches children Bible truths with object lessons, there will also be games and snacks. All children are welcome to participate. This is a free club. For more information contact Bethany at 814937-5837. Helping Hands Community Center, a ministry of St. Peters UMC located at Main and Chestnut St. in Parryville continues to host Life tree Café each Saturday evening from 5pm-6pm. The Café is open to all people for an hour of stories and conversation to feed your soul. With the Holiday season upon us the Café will not be open until May 4th, watch for topic information. The Church is planning a 125th Anniversary on September 15,

2019. If anyone has history items they would like to share, they can be mailed or dropped off at the church or contact Pastor Bill. The community is also welcome to attend this special day. As the community is invited to drop off good used clothing for the Redeemers Closet, we ask that the bags of clothing be placed in the Blue bin by the shed, not by the lower doors. If clothing is placed outside and gets wet it is no longer of use and is thrown away. We would like to thank all who contribute to this ministry. Regular Sunday activities include Sunday school held for all ages at 9am. Our Blended Worship service is at 10:00am. Youth group at 6PM and Communion is observed on the 1st Sunday of each month. Bible Study is held Monday mornings at 11am. Wednesday night Bible Study is at 6PM. Both Bible Study groups will be doing “Do you Believe?” Starting April 17th, the Wednesday Bible Study will again be on Wednesday evening. Reseal Grout Lines The cement-based material between wall, floor, and countertop tiles is extremely porous and stains easily. Protect it with a penetrating grout sealer; it's best to apply it with a small foam brush. Vacuum and Shampoo Rugs Synthetic carpets and rugs with waterproof backings can be deep-cleaned with a rotary shampoo machine and a hot-water extraction machine. Rugs without backings, including Orientals, require professional cleaning. Dust Books and Shelves Take everything off the shelves, and brush them (along with the books) with a feather duster. Use the dust brush or crevice tool on a vacuum to reach into tight spots. Wipe the spines of leather-bound books with a clean, soft cloth. Northampton Community College (NCC) will hold a full-day of sustainability-themed events on Wednesday, April 24, from 8:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m., in room 220, College Center, Bethlehem Campus, 3835 Green Pond Road, Bethlehem Township. Richard Master, Chairman & CEO of MCS Industries, Inc., will discuss "My Perspective on Business Values and Social Responsibility" on Tuesday, April 30, 11:00 a.m., in Room 220, College Center, Northampton Community College, (NCC) Bethlehem Campus, 3835 Green Pond Road, Bethlehem Township. The talk is part of NCC's Hal Shaffer Memorial Executive-in-Residence program. In 1980, Master founded MCS Industries, which evolved into a manufacturer of picture frames. MCS has grown to become the leading supplier of picture frames and decorative mirrors in the U.S. MCS currently has manufacturing plants in the U.S., Mexico and China. MCS customers are the largest mass market retailers in the United States in addition to 2,000 small and medium sized retailers. Master takes a strong interest in public policy and has produced three documentaries advocating single-payer, universal coverage reform to the U.S. healthcare system and is the chairman of the Business Initiative for Health Policy headquartered in Washington D.C. He is past president and board member of the

Easton Boys & Girls Club, the founder of the "Easton Jazz Festival" and has served as the chairman of the Bethlehem Authority, an organization which supervises the financing and strategic planning for the water and sewer infrastructures for the city and eleven surrounding communities. Cybersecurity Camp for Teachers set for June at LCCC

Through a grant from the National Security Agency and the National Science Foundation, Lehigh Carbon Community College will offer a one-week cybersecurity summer camp for elementary, middle and high school teachers from Lehigh, Carbon and Schuylkill counties. LCCC’s GenCyber Camp, to be held June 24-28, is limited to 20 teachers in grades 1-12. The camp will be offered as a three-credit special topics course for college credit and at no charge to the student. The Lehigh Carbon GenCyber Teacher Camp will train teachers in the topics of computer components, computer networks, cryptography, cybersecurity, safe online behavior and cyber ethics. Camp participants will have hands-on experience and will also learn how to integrate these topics into their curricula at an age-appropriate level. Through the year-long follow-up program, teachers will receive support from camp instructors on how to incorporate cybersecurity concepts into their courses. Federal support for GenCyber camps across the country is in response to a need to develop cybersecurity awareness and teach sound cybersecurity fundamentals at the K-12 levels. The

goals of the GenCyber program are to increase interest in cybersecurity careers and diversity in the cybersecurity workforce, help students understand correct and safe online behavior, and improve teaching methods for delivering cybersecurity content in K-12 curricula. In 2018, LCCC earned the designation of Center of Academic Excellence Cyber Defense Two-Year Education (CAE2Y) by the National Security Agency and the U.S. Department of Homeland Security. Each teacher will be paid a $500 stipend to participate in the one-week camp. Camp instructors will be Susan Miner, LCCC’s professor of Computer Science and coordinator of the Cyber Center, and Sami Jo Eckhart, teacher of Business, Computers, and Information Technology at Parkland High School. LCCC Offers Health Care Training in Tamaqua submitted by Linda Baker

Lehigh Carbon Community College is offering two health care training courses at its Tamaqua location this spring, and a limited number of scholarships are available to those who qualify. The Home Health Aide course runs April 15 through May 8, Mondays and Wednesdays from 5:30 to 9:30 p.m. The program prepares students for entry-level employment in a home health care setting, offering well-rounded knowledge of basic patient care skills and home management. Students will learn safe work practices and protocol in order to assist those who are sick, injured, disabled or have difficulty with daily activities. CPR training is included in this program. The Office Assistant course runs May 13 to July 8, Mondays and Wednesdays from 6 to 8:30 p.m. This training course is designed to equip students with the professional skills needed to become an administrative assistant. Students will learn indemand skills like office organization, technology including Microsoft Word, scheduling and filing, record maintenance, financial skills and general administrative duties.
