Parenting Children During the Coronavirus Pandemic: Tips for Parents By Stephanie C. Nash, LICSW President & CEO, Episcopal Center for Children
This is an unprecedented time in our world and, understandably, there are many questions and concerns due to the Covid-19 pandemic. The shut down of schools, business establishments, and restaurants combined with social distancing, and self quarantine have resulted in major changes to how we navigate our daily lives. Families with children of all ages are impacted by these changes. Parents are creatively looking to
adapt to new routines to support their children while seeking to establish responsibility, peace, and joy in the household. The balancing act can bring both rewards and challenges. Staying at home and following the directives from government officials is important. We all need to find safe and meaningful ways to support our children, one another, and seek self care. Here are some tips to help.

Tips for family and self care while home: • Do frequent hand washing with soap and water. When not available use hand sanitizer. • Wash or clean incoming groceries before bringing them into your home. • Wipe down common household surfaces that are used frequently, such as the kitchen counters, dining table, door knobs, refrigerator handles, bathroom counters, faucet handles, and other surfaces. • Create a calm tone in your home. Adults should strive to be self aware. Anxiety may be high for adults in the home, but it is important to provide reassurance and calm to your children - they are watching and listening to how you respond to this crisis. • Check in with your loved ones and talk with your children about their thoughts and feelings. For younger children, follow their lead. Be honest and use appropriate talk. Limit child viewing of daily news broadcasts. For older children, be honest and have age appropriate discussions. Validate their concerns while providing reassurance and understanding for their feelings. • Maintain routines as much as possible. Young children especially will need structure that replicates a school week. Make time for snacks and movement breaks.
• Give daily, positive affirmations and encourage family members. This might be as simple as saying, “Wow, you are doing great at sharing the game with your sister” or “Thanks for being helpful by clearing off the table” or “You were so responsible with your online assignment.” • Offer healthy and nutritious snacks and meals. • Use the time at home to engage in activities with your family - such as board games, baking, puzzles, home projects, book discussions, arts and crafts, jam sessions, home recitals, dance and exercise workouts, yoga, barbecue, cookout, front porch picnics, and more. • Set boundaries. Give yourself permission for some quiet time/space during the course of the day. For many parents or guardians, that might mean getting up before everyone else, or having a quiet time to pray, meditate, or do breathing exercises. • Encourage family chores that are age-appropriate for everyone in the family. Offer praise for completed chores and talk about how everyone is working together. • Set intentions and realistic expectations for yourself. One way to do that is to write down what you intend to accomplish for the day. • Exercise self- compassion. Be kind to yourself during this time of challenges.

Tips for effective hand-washing during coronavirus outbreak, any time By Julie Washington, The Plain Dealer
Q: What do I need to know about hand-washing during the COVID-19 outbreak? A: The best way to protect yourself against COVID-19 — the illness caused by the new coronavirus — and influenza is frequent handwashing, said Dr. Kristin Englund, staff physician for infectious diseases at the Cleveland Clinic. “It’s got to be first and f o r e m o s t ,” Englund said. Despite the fact that proper handwashing is critical in preventing the spread of germs, a 2013 Michigan State University study found that 95 percent of people do it the wrong way. About 33 percent of adults studied didn’t use soap, and 10 percent didn’t wash their hands at all, according to the 2013 study published in the Journal of Environmental Health. Men were particularly bad at washing their hands correctly, the study
found. Here are tips for effective hand-washing techniques, from Englund, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, and the Cleaning Institute: • Wet hands with warm, clean, running water before applying soap. Any hand soap is fine; it doesn’t have to be antibacterial soap. • Lather both hands, including the backs of your hands, between your fingers and under your nails. Scrub hands for at least 20 seconds before rinsing and drying. • It’s fine to use either paper towels or an air hand dryer in a public restroom. If paper towels are provided, use one to protect your clean hands from the faucet and door handle. Be sure to throw the paper towel in the garbage bin so it doesn’t spread germs.
How to use hand sanitizer
Hand sanitizer is a good alternative if soap and water aren’t available, but the sanitizer must contain at least 60% alcohol. Sanitizing gels don’t get rid of all types of germs and aren’t as effective when hands are visibly dirty

or greasy. These gels might not remove harmful chemicals like pesticides from hands. To use it correctly, put gel sanitizer in the palm of one hand. Read the label to find out how much to use. Rub your hands together briskly, including the front and back, between fingers, and around and under nails, until your hands are dry. This should take around 20 seconds.
Best times to wash your hands
At home: Before and after preparing meals, before eating, after using the bathroom, after touching garbage or diapers, after caring for a sick family member, and before and after treating a cut or wound. Wash after blowing your nose, coughing or sneezing. With pets: After playing with a pet, handling pet food or handling waste. On the job: Before eating and after using the bathroom. If there are shared snacks, avoid touching food that others have touched. While running errands: Use an antibacterial wipe on the grocery cart handle, especially if a child will be riding in the cart. Avoid touching your face after contact with frequently touched surfaces. While traveling: Keep at least 6 feet away from fellow travelers who are sneezing, coughing or
blowing their nose. Wash your hands after going through airport security, and after getting off the plane.
20-second song choruses make washing fun
You’ve heard about washing hands to the tune of “Happy Birthday,” but now there are lists of other 20-second song choruses that are more fun to hum in the bathroom to ensure you are washing for the right amount of time. Lizzo’s “Truth Hurts,” Belinda Carlisle’s “Heaven on Earth,”“Stayin’ Alive” by the Bee Gees and Lady Gaga’s“Bad Romance”are among the hand-washing songs recommended by USA Today and the Los Angeles Times.

disciples, 2 saying to them,“Go to the village ahead of you, and at once you will find a donkey tied there, with her colt by her. Untie them and bring them to me. 3 If anyone says anything to you, say that the Lord needs them, and he will send them right away.” 4 This took place to fulfill what was spoken through the prophet: 5 “Say to Daughter Zion, ‘See, your king comes to you, gentle and riding on a donkey, and on a colt, the foal of a donkey.’” 6 The disciples went and did as Jesus had instructed them. 7 They brought the donkey and the colt and placed their cloaks on them for Jesus to sit on. 8 A very large crowd spread their cloaks on the road, while others cut branches from the trees and spread them on the road. 9 The crowds that went ahead of him and those that followed shouted, “Hosanna to the Son of David!” “Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord!” “Hosanna in the highest heaven!” 10 When Jesus entered Jerusalem, the whole city was stirred and asked, “Who is this?” 11 The crowds answered, “This is Jesus, the prophet from Nazareth in Galilee.” Jesus at the Temple 12 Jesus entered the temple courts and drove out all who were buying and selling there. He overturned the tables of the money changers and the benches of those selling doves. 13 “It is written,” he said to them, “‘My house will be called a house of prayer,’ but you are making it ‘a den of robbers.’” 14 The blind and the lame came to him at the temple, and he healed them. 15 But when the chief priests and the teachers of the law saw the wonderful Easter 7& 10 am things he didServices and the children shouting in the
temple courts,“Hosanna to the Son of David,” they were indignant. 16 “Do you hear what these children are saying?” they asked him. “Yes,” replied Jesus, “have you never read, “‘From the lips of children and infants you, Lord, have called forth your praise’?” 17 And he left them and went out of the city to Bethany, where he spent the night. Pondering Easter, the greatest story ever told SOURCE: The Editorial Board of the Free Lance-Star
The Easter Story has been called “The Greatest Story Ever Told,” first as a radio series in the late 1940s and then in George Stevens’ epic feature film released 50 years ago with a star-studded cast. No matter what critics may say about modern-day attempts to recount the life of Jesus Christ on the big screen, radio or television, it is an amazing story. That’s why directors, producers, authors and theologians keep telling it more than 2,000 years later. Consider the elements: His story opens with a miraculous birth that requires Jesus’ family to flee for their lives from a cruel Roman governor who fears this infant, a descendant of King David, will topple his rule. The child grows into a man who becomes a carpenter. He leaves his trade and home to travel about with a rough lot, including fishermen and a tax collector, to teach about how the kingdom of God has drawn near. Jesus gets people’s attention by healing the sick, blind and lame, and turning water into wine. He feeds thousands who gather to hear him teach by multiplying a few fish and some bread into a feast. These astounding events and the authoritative teaching by this itinerant raise eyebrows. Could he
be the long-awaited savior and son of God? Such suggestions upset the status quo of earthly religious leaders. He winds up caught between Jewish law and the refined Roman system of justice, is convicted and sentenced to death. Fully human, he dreads his coming sacrifice and yet he proceeds. Then, three days after suffering an agonizing death on the cross, Jesus is recognized for what He is—the atoning sacrifice for sin once and for all. Through resurrection, Jesus rises to become what he was all along, but what the world could not see—God with us. What an amazing turnabout! He’s the fulfillment of prophecy; He’s a gift of forgiveness, an example to follow and eternal life. He rises from victim to victor. The greatest of stories is something to ponder amid the Easter egg hunts, chocolate bunnies and family suppers.

INGREDIENTS:
• 4 hamburger buns, split • 1 head green leaf lettuce, leaves separated • 1 beefsteak tomato, sliced • 20 dill pickle slices
FOR THE CHICKEN
• 2 boneless, skinless chicken breasts • 1 cup dill pickle juice • 1 1/2 cups milk, divided • 1 cup peanut oil • 1 large egg • 1/2 cup all-purpose flour • 1 tablespoon confectioners’ sugar • Kosher salt and freshly ground black pepper, to taste
DIRECTIONS:
1. Place a chicken breast on a cutting board. With your hand flat on top of it, carefully slice the chicken in half horizontally. Trim excess fat as needed. 2. In a large shallow baking dish, combine chicken, pickle juice and 1/2 cup milk; marinate for at least 30 minutes. Drain well. 3. Heat peanut oil in a large skillet over medium high heat. 4. In another large shallow baking dish, whisk together remaining 1 cup milk and egg. Stir in chicken to coat and drain excess milk mixture. 5. In a gallon size Ziploc bag or large bowl, combine chicken, flour and confectioners’ sugar; season with salt and pepper, to taste. 6. Working in batches, add chicken to the skillet and cook until evenly golden and crispy, about 4-5 minutes. Transfer to a paper towel-lined plate. 7. 7 Important Questions to Ask Your Child During Storytime By Kelsey Kloss Scholastic.com / Scholastic Parents
Amplify the benefits in story time by asking your young reader these questions before, during, and after you read together. Before You Read 1. What do you think might happen in this story? Jumpstart your child’s creativity and attention to detail. “This question helps children notice and think about clues from the title and illustrations,” says Milby. What’s more, it piques your reader’s interest in the book, while encouraging him to think about any background knowledge he has on the story’s topic to make predictions. In general, try to keep your questions open-ended (Ask, "What do you think this story is about?" rather than,“Do you think this story is about a superhero?”). “Open-ended questions facilitate conversation and vocabulary building by giving the child the chance to formulate a full response,” adds Milby. While You Read 2. What word do you think should come next? Every so often, cover a word in a sentence and ask this question. “It helps with children’s syntax, because they’re indirectly noticing that they need to choose either a noun, adjective, verb, or so forth based on what helps the sentence make sense,” says Andrew DiNapoli, director of curriculum at the Baldwin School District in New York. It also encourages observational skills, since your child will choose a word based on what she’s learned about the story so far (perhaps every sentence ends with a word that rhymes with “cat”) or what she deciphers from the illustrations (perhaps there’s a rat in the picture). 3. What was that character’s name again? Simple recall questions help you gauge your child’s reading comprehension, says DiNapoli. It’s common for a child to skim past words or names they’re not familiar with, but remembering these basic facts helps him to better answer more complex comprehension questions later on, and boosts attention and memory skills. What’s more, knowing all of the important details will help make the rest of the book far more engaging and enjoyable for him. If necessary, flip back through the pages to find the answer together. 4. Which words do you think best describe this character? When your child thinks about a character’s traits, she may begin to decide if she would make the same decisions as that character. It also encourages 32
her to consider the relationships between characters. “Understanding those relationships leads to a better comprehension of the overall story,” says DiNapoli.“Seeing certain relationships — say, that between a mother and a child — helps the reader better understand the character’s ability to move through specific challenges and conflicts.” 5. Does anything in this book seem familiar to you? You could also phrase this question as: “Can you make a connection between what’s happening in this book and something in your own life?” “We want kids to make these powerful connections to their world because it helps them to better understand what’s happening around them,” says Milby. For instance, if you’re reading a book about animals playing in the snow, your child may point out how it was snowing when he visited Grandma upstate last week, or how he’s learning about the water cycle and weather patterns in school. After You Read 6. How might this story be different if it was told from another character’s point of view? This question encourages your child’s reasoning skills. “At this point, they’re thinking about the big ideas within the story, but also the authorial moves that were made,” says DiNapoli.“The author made a decision by telling the story from a certain point of view, but if you tell it from another character’s point of view, the plot might change.” Consequentially, to answer, your child will need to consider how the characters, setting, and structure are connected. 7. Can you make up a different ending to this story? Your child will need to reflect on the story to answer this question, and will also need to think comprehensively about the various routes the plot could have taken. “If the theme of the story is honesty, then they might brainstorm other solutions to the plot’s conflict that reflect that theme,”says DiNapoli. For the more advanced reader, you may even ask,“Can you create an ending to the story that shows how the characters solved the problem in a different way?” News@TownAndCountryGazette.com || APRIL 2, 2020
