Back to school savings Tips and tricks Submitted By Curtis Loftis

It’s that time of year! The season of searching for #2 pencils, brightly colored binders, and that oh-so special book bag is here. It’s an exciting time, full of anticipation for school-aged children and their parents. But as the first day of school approaches, families often find shopping for crucial school supplies comes with a heavy price tag. Parents can end up unloading hundreds of dollars on back-to-school gear. BLUE M O UN TA I N

Of course, you want to supply your child with the right materials, but you also want to avoid overspending. So how can you make the most of your hard-earned dollars? It’s simple: plan to shop smart.

1. Follow the list: Teachers regularly provide a list of required materials. Don’t stray from what is suggested, as extra items often go unused. Your child may plead for extra colored pencils that will end up untouched the entire year. Prepare your child in advance for sticking to the list. 2. Double check the closet: It’s possible that some of the supplies you need are items you already have from the previous school year, and they are likely still in good condition. Check closets and drawers for binders, folders, and pencils that can be utilized this year. Every dollar saved counts! 3. Avoid big brands: Your child may want the trendiest product from the most prestigious brand, but that doesn’t always translate to best quality. Well-known brands traditionally have higher price tags, but the items are virtually the same as those sold by lesser known brands. 4. Shop with cash: Estimate how much you’ll need to buy the items on your back-to-school list. Take that amount of cash to the store, and try to buy all materials with cash only. That way you won’t be tempted to overspend.Your child can help keep track of your purchases as you shop. 5. Coupons, coupons, coupons: The Sunday paper is a great place to find discount coupons on back to school supplies. Your child may want to join in the fun.You can also check websites like RetailMeNot, Groupon and KrazyCouponLady to find deals and discounts. With these tips in mind, your child will get all the important school supplies he or she needs for a successful year, and you won’t break the bank.

Back to School Tips for Families of Children Coping with Special Needs Submitted by Ami Neiberger-Miller

Heading back to the classroom this fall is exciting, but it can also be a challenging time for families of children with special needs. The Episcopal Center for Children (ECC), a nonprofit organization serving children coping with special needs ages 5-14 in the Washington, DC area since 1895, offers tips to help: Tip #1 – Review your child’s Individual Education Plan (IEP). Carefully look over the IEP. Do you have

any new medical or psychological reports that the school should know about? Some parents find using a binder or folder for paperwork can be a big help. Tip #2 – Keep everyone informed. Talk with the school to make sure their plans for your child match the intentions in the IEP. Ensure the school staff are up to speed on where your child is presently. Make sure you know where your child’s classroom is, any

transportation plans, and what he or she will need to bring each day. Talk with your child too. Build up “going back to school” and be positive! Tip #3 – Calm any stress or first day jitters your child may have. Whether it’s a new classroom or familiar surroundings, children may be nervous about starting back to school. Talk with your child about their feelings. Assure your child that going back to school will be a good thing. Tip #4 – Delay getting new school clothes. A new outfit may not calm first day nerves. For some children coping with sensitivities, new clothes may aggravate nervousness or be uncomfortable. For children with sensory challenges, new clothes may feel itchy, stiff and uncomfortable. If your child

needs it, let him or her wear clothes that are comfortable and familiar for the first few days of school. Tip #5 – Help your child “picture” going back to school. Some children visually process information and benefit from visual assurances. Create a visual countdown chart at home, so your child can help move the numbers as you count down to the start of the school year. If your child is returning to a familiar school and you have photos showing him or her at school or with friends or a teacher, show the photos to your child. If you visit the school before school starts, take a picture of your child in his or her classroom, and show the photo to your Continued on page 8

child later at home. Tip #6 – Begin introducing new routines before school starts. Morning and afternoon routines can help your child transition into and out of school each day. You may need to establish an earlier bedtime routine to make sure your child is up on time and ready to go. Start thinking about how you want to approach homework. Talk with your child about when and how homework will be completed. Tip #7 – Talk to the school staff about any of your concerns. Open communication helps children

coping with special needs. Speak with school staff if you have noticed something new about your child that may impact their education. Open communication with school staff will benefit your child. Some parents find it helpful to keep a communication log or to set reminders on their calendar for regular check-ins with school staff. Tip #8 – Get clarity on transitions. Because transitions during the school day can be challenging, clarify with school staff how transitions are handled. Who greets children as they get off the bus? Who talks to them when they walk into the building? How are transitions between classes or activities handled? Make sure your child understands what to expect. Tip #9 – Mark your calendar for school events. If the school has an open house, parent-teacher night, or back to school program, try to attend. Talk with the staff about your child’s progress. If you are not able to go, make a point of calling the teacher or staff at another time and getting caught up on the information. Tip #10 - Review your child’s school’s ParentStudent Handbook. Carefully review the school’s parent-student handbook to make sure that you are aware of school policies and requirements. Discuss the discipline policy with your child prior to the first day of school.

Washington and his hatchet Washington was a good boy, When he was a little fellow, And he always behaved himself properly When he was with his Dad. He always did everything well, Like a smart boy should have. To be sure, he could not lie Even if he would have wanted to.

One time he went out in the yard, Which was full of cherry trees, And chopped down the nicest tree When his dad was away from home. The cherry trees were nicely bearing fruit Every year they bore fruit, And, oh, how sweet the cherries would be Can’t put it in words here! Washington’s good father managed his home frugally Continued on page 18

They will get some from it, and even if They must steal them. They don’t care about a mad dog, You can’t deter them, You also could not lightly drive them away Except you shoot [at, (hopefully)] them. George was there at the cherry tree, With thin long branches; He could not shake the cherries off, They were all ‘too fast’. He looked at the cherries, And wanted to have them; The tree was slender and pretty high And what should he have done? Now if he would have crawled up And had gotten cherries for himself And ripped his pants, His mother would have mended them. And if, however, he would have fallen From the top [of the tree] onto a stone Then George could have broken An arm or a leg.

AUGUST 16, 2018 || townandcountrygazette.com

Perhaps it would not have resulted In just one [broken] bone; What if it would have turned out worse And he broke his neck? And if it would have happened that way And it turned out for us thus, Then we never, in no way, would have a “United States” here. George then chopped down the tree, And don’t forget this: He was very hungry, He wanted ‘to eat himself full!’ You know that he was a cautious person And was from the best stock, And that in his youth he was a great philosopher. Then when his dad come home, And when he went out to the sheds, He also saw right away that Something was very wrong there. His cherry tree was laying there Continued on page 20

as straight as an Indian arrow; And just a short distance from there was George with his hatchet.

“Well,” said the father to his George, “Do not betray [deceive] any person, Rather chop all of the cherry trees [down] Than to lie to just one man.

Here lay the fruit-bearing(?) cherry tree He was so proud of it And now it has no more value, Except for kindling wood. His dad was angry and said to him, “Come here, my bad boy, Here lies my nice cherry tree, Did you do this?” George replied, “I did it, I certainly cannot lie.” And he believed he would this time For sure, get his ears boxed. [Anyone else have memories here?]

George did not have many chances [to lie]; You big boys have. George could not lie; You would be able to, but don’t! [ We usually hear this story around President’s Day, but I included it now simply because it is an interesting illustration of how history is used by those wishing to teach a moral lesson to the young (‘big boys’, in his poem). You can check out what historians say about this event.]

6 Secrets To Surviving Back To School Clothes Shopping Submitted by Helena Alkhas

WHAT, HOW MUCH, WHEN AND WHERE If you are like millions of other time-starved moms, the thought of back to school clothes shopping leaves you feeling stressed and wondering how you can get it all done within your budget. Take advantage of these mom-tested, time-saving tips this year and get your children ready for backto-school in time—without busting your budget. 1. START WITH A PLAN Create a master back-to-school shopping list and back-to-school budget for each child. Discuss the list and ask your kids what items or brands they want most. Let them help make the budget trade-offs. For example, if they want an expensive pair of shoes, they’ll need to spend less on their backpack or clothes. Go online and look for those items so everyone knows exactly how much we’re talking about. 2. SHOP THE CLOSET Yes, dig into your child’s closet before you even think about shopping. Get everything out of that closet and start sorting. Set out a few outfits and

see how much you can mix and match. Move tops and bottoms around until you have a variety of basics that would benefit from some new pieces. If you have younger children, this is the perfect time to check what is in good condition from big brother or sister to go to your little ones. Sort through every piece of clothing, remove Continued on page 22

Clothes Shopping Continued from page 21

anything that doesn’t fit, and decide what can be donated and what needs to be thrown away. Now you have an idea of what clothing your child already has. These items are the basics from which your shopping list will grow. 3. SHOP ONLINE There’s no chance you’ll EVER find me shopping with my three boys on a mall. If shopping at department stores is stressful for you and your family as it is for me, consider skipping it altogether. Shop your favorite brands or major online sites like Amazon.com or take advantage of PersonalShopper.com. This free service saves you time and money by sifting through millions of products to find deals and items tailored to your family’s needs. Backpacks, socks, underwear, and 22

accessories can be purchased online easily. Shoes and clothing can’t be tried on, but websites like Zappos.com offers a 365-day refund policy. Shopping online for clothes can be done comfortably and slowly without pressure. 4. IT’S BEST ONE-ON-ONE Or, alternatively, schedule a backto-school shopping date with each child, giving them your undivided attention. I actually did this last year with one of the boys – the only one looking forward to a trip to the mall and lunch at The Cheesecake Factory! and it was a lot of fun for both of us. He was so happy coming home with his new clothes and a lot to brag about to his brothers! 5. SHOP OFF-SEASON Clothes go on sale all the time, every season of the year. Watch for cold weather gear like coats, sweaters, boots, gloves, scarves, and hats when winter ends. Purchasing ahead of time can save a lot of money. If your child is in a growth spurt, be cautious about what you buy early, or purchase a size bigger. I always shop right after the season for the boys and I get all the basics for a fraction of the size. The only item I shop “as needed” are shoes, which I only buy online via zappos. com because their customer service and free shipping and returns are just amazing! 6. SNAG SWEET DEALS As a parent, one of my biggest challenges is keeping myself and the boys within the set budget. From X-box games to clothing it’s hard for them to grasp how much one has to work to make that money. I choose to share with each boy the amount we can afford to spend and if I go out to shop for a game, for example, I make sure I bring the cash with me so they don’t see me “just swiping” the card to pay for it. Teach them to value your hard-earned money and how to stretch the budget as far as possible by making smart choices. To help you stay within budget, clip coupons and check flyers for sales and make an envelope for each child. Do you have a tax-free holiday? Many states have tax-free holidays around the start of school. Make sure to check whether your state has a tax-free holiday and go shopping during those times. Need for nurses fuels program establishment On Monroe Campus Submitted by Mia Rossi

This fall 2018, Northampton Community College's two-year associate degree in applied science registered nursing program is available for the first time fully at the Monroe Campus. In the past, students could take a portion of their classes at Monroe, but would need to travel to the Bethlehem Campus in order to complete their degree. Now students can complete all classes at Monroe. NCC also has numerous agreements with RN to BSN completion programs throughout the country. In addition, a new state-of-the-art nursing simulation laboratory is being opened at Monroe, which will give students hands-on clinical experience during their coursework. "Practical nursing program graduates had to come to Bethlehem Campus to continue on the path to receiving a registered nursing degree, but now, it's a seamless transition to that program close to home for Monroe County residents," notes Dr. Mary Jean Osbourne, director of nursing programs at NCC. The campus is offering the RN program to meet the growing needs of the health care industry in

Monroe and surrounding areas. St. Luke's was a part of the expanding industry having built a hospital in 2016 in Bartonsville. A year later, Lehigh Valley Health Network (LVHN) acquired Pocono Medical Center in East Stroudsburg in 2017, and it became Lehigh Valley Hospital - Pocono. LVHN has plans to build a new hospital, Pocono West, off of Route 715, projected to open in 2020.

New Slatington Historic Banners Unveiled Slatington’s new National Historic District banners were formally unveiled during a press conference and check presentation on Tuesday July 24 at Slatington Borough Hall. Northern Lehigh Future Focus (NLFF), a Slatington based community visioning group serving the Northern Lehigh area spearheaded the banner replacement project. In 2004, a large portion of Slatington was placed on the National Register of Historic Places. This register is the official list of our nation’s historic places worthy of preservation. In order to educate the public and promote the newly created historic district, as well as welcome visitors to Slatington, future focus began the original banner project in 2005, which resulted in the purchase and installation of 28 banners. After 12 years and the effects of weather, the banners could no longer be displayed. Through the assistance of the Lehigh Valley Chamber Foundation in the form of a grant, the public’s response to an “Adopt a Banner” program, and funding from NLFF, 28 new banners now adorn the Main Street corridor in Slatington. The total cost of the replacement banners was $3,388.00. A new color motif was chosen for the

banners that more closely matches the school colors of the Northern Lehigh School District. Downtown Graphics of Wilmington, North Carolina manufactured the banners, and the Slatington Borough Maintenance Crew installed the banners. Northern Lehigh Future Focus would like to thank and recognize the following businesses, civic groups, and individuals who sponsored the replacement banners: Mr. & Mrs. David Altrichter, Mr. & Mrs. Joseph Bechtel, Betty Blose, Ed Donnelly & Beverly Zeiser, Marilyn Kaul, Slatington Lodge No.440- Free And Accepted Masons, Sule’s Collision Center, Inc., Mr. & Mrs. Tim Snyder, Steckel & Stopp –Attorneys at Law and the Woman’s Club of Slatington. Donations from the “Adopt a Banner” program totaled $1100. Also in attendance for the check presentation were members of the Lehigh Valley Chamber Foundation, and Lehigh Valley Chamber of Commerce. The chamber foundation presented a check to future focus totaling $1,694.00. NLFF extends a huge thank you to the Lehigh Valley Chamber Foundation for their continued support of community projects in Slatington and the entire Northern Lehigh area.

In both photos left to right, Robert Stettner, NLFF Secretary, Lorie Reinert, Executive Director, Lehigh Valley Chamber Foundation, Alice Wanamaker, Assitant Vice-President, Northern Region, Lehigh Valley Chamber of Commerce and Dan Stevens, NLFF President. 28

There Are Two Types Of Dentists –And One Is Disappearing Fast Submitted by Alex Zlatin

Fewer U.S. and Canadian dental students are choosing private practice and are instead opting to join large dental chains, which are gobbling up dental practices like Walmart gobbled up Mom and Pop shops 50 years ago. This means in the future patients will have fewer options when selecting a dentist. “For specialists such as a periodontists or

orthodontists, it is a no-brainer to become employees of corporations so they can have a steady income without the headaches of owning a business,” says Alex Zlatin, CEO of Maxim Software Systems, a dental practice management company, author of the Responsible Dental Ownership (www.alexzlatin. com). “But in general dentistry, the answer is not so clear cut. And with new problems and challenges to setting up a practice, patients will probably see less independent dentists in the future.” Many independent dentists believe that the corporations are losing the human side of dentistry. They feel some corporations view patients as cogs in their corporate machine rather than individuals who need to have a relationship with their dentist, Zlatin says. Recently, corporations have bought up hundreds of practices in Canada in attempts to monopolize the industry. The Dental Corporation of Canada, which is now one of the biggest dental suppliers around the country, now has 160 individual dental clinics, with 30 in British Columbia alone.

In the United States, several studies have shown large multi-establishment dental enterprises are continuing to outstrip independent dentists. “The trend toward larger, multi-establishment dental practices is expected to continue, driven by changes in the practice patterns of new dentists, a drive for efficiency and increased competition for patients,” said a study by the Health Policy Institute of the American Dental Association. Zlatin says constantly changing regulatory requirements, increased focus on patient privacy and other issues are making independent practices less attractive. But he says there will always be dentists who do not like taking orders from others and want to be their own boss. Zlatin says there are a few questions dental students should ask themselves before they decide whether to open their own office or join a corporatedental office. Am I willing to do the extra homework in areas outside dentistry like understanding how to hire a great staff and how to find the best office site? Have I always wanted to open my own business or does that thought scare me? Do I have trouble working for others? Am I the type of person who always likes to be the boss? “There will always be a place for the dentist who

wants his own practice and is willing to tackle the tough issues that come along with it,” Zlatin says. “But they will need to be more focused and prepared for the challenge than their predecessors in order to succeed.” Alex Zlatin, author of the book Responsible Dental Ownership (www.alexzlatin.com), had more than 10 years of management experience before he accepted the position of CEO of dental practice management company Maxim Software Systems. His company helps struggling dental professionals take control of their practices and reach the next level of success with responsible leadership strategies. He earned a B.Sc. in Technology Management at HIT in Israel, and earned his MBA at Edinburgh Business School.

Red Cross urgently needs blood donations before summer ends As summer winds down, the American Red Cross urges individuals to give blood and platelets now and help end an emergency summer blood shortage that began last month. A critical need remains as many regular donors delay giving to take final summer vacations and prepare for school to start. To ensure lifesaving treatments remain available for patients in the coming weeks, donations are needed now, especially type O. In thanks for helping at this urgent time, all those who come to donate blood or platelets July 30 through Aug. 30, 2018, will receive a $5 Amazon. com Gift Card via email. (Restrictions apply; see amazon.com/gc-legal. More information and details are available at RedCrossBlood.org/Together.) Make an appointment to donate blood by downloading the free American Red Cross Blood Donor App, visiting RedCrossBlood.org or calling 1-800-RED CROSS (1-800-733-2767). Those who donated blood earlier this summer may be eligible to give again. Blood can be safely given every 56 days, and Power Red donations can be given every 16 weeks.

5 Easy Tips for Fun and Playful Lunches By Dana Villamagna, Toca Magazine Writer

Pinterest-perfect? Not necessarily ... these tips are about real-life lunches that are fun, manageable and affordable. School lunch is more than just a time to fill your kid’s rumbling tummy, it’s also an opportunity for both of you to have some fun. 1. Let the kids do lunch. Share lunch-making duties, either by working together or having kids pack their own lunch some (or all) days. “Kids should start packing their lunches whenever they are going to eat lunch at school — so if it’s kindergarten then they should start there,” said Karen Laszlo, founder of the kids’ nutrition website ZisBoomBah. Laszlo recommends that parents allow 5- to 7-year-olds to choose from a few options to create their own lunch, and plan extra time for making and packing. Lists such as the Build a Better Sandwich list may help parents and kids pre-plan. Allow 5- to 7-year-olds to choose from a few options to create their own lunch. 2. Expand their food repertoire. Add something new to your kid’s lunch, even if it’s just one item in the mix of the typical lunchbox fare. Make a sandwich with naan or a croissant; choose a lunch day to be Pasta Salad Day and include a new item

in the salad each week; pack a Paleo lunch of nuts, berries and jerky; go vegetarian or vegan for Meatless Mondays. Make healthier versions of pre-packaged meals that kids see advertised, such as the “Make Your Own–able Lunches” from Shannon Carino’s blog Bentolunch.net. “Kids like the concept better than the food in them,” Carino said, so she uses high-quality foods instead of the pre-packaged versions but keeps the fun concepts. 3. Jazz up non-edible parts. Bento box containers and other small food holders are excellent ways to keep kids’ lunch food separated and eye-catchingly neat, which makes eating it all the more appealing. Include fun items, like printable sandwich bags, themed napkins, colorful and reusable silverware, hip water bottles, silicon baking cups (used as food holders), and cutouts for sandwiches and fruit. Bonus: Reusable items can save your family almost $250 per kid each year and help reduce waste. 4. Add love notes. Or other fun surprises, like greeting cards, fortune cookies, trivia cards or a copy of a comic strip that will make them laugh. Write a note on the outside of their juice box (or

even on a banana!) with a sentiment of love, inspiration or humor. Just be sure that your kid still appreciates the parental public affections; some kids (like my daughters) love to show their friends at the lunch table how much their mom loves them when I put a card or sticky note in their lunchbox, others (my son included) not so much. Ask first if they like the general idea, and keep the details a surprise. 5. Pump up the creativity. From Eric Carle bookinspired lunches to lunches with elaborate themes, the sky’s the limit. Even though it may take extra effort, bento enthusiasts say it’s fun and worthy of the time. With a few extra supplies, cutting a

sandwich with a shape cutout becomes just as easy as cutting it with a knife. “It’s no different than moms who craft, who scrapbook, or who sew,” Carino said. “It’s creative. You have to feed them anyway.” It’s probably not realistic for most families to expect every packed lunch to be blog-worthy, and sometimes a PBJ, apple and water lunch gets the job done just fine. Even bento bloggers don’t go all-out on every lunch. Carino said she keeps a stash of healthy, pre-made items in her freezer that are lunchbox-ready for extra-rushed mornings. But adding that extra dose of creativity every once in a while can be a real treat.

in slow cooker with chiles, soup mix, and water and cook on LOW for 6-8 hours. Slice onion and green pepper into strips and saute in olive oil. Take meat out of crockpot (I use a slotted spoon) and place meat, onions, green peppers, and whatever other toppings you like on your fajita (I listed what we put on them, but you can use whatever you like).

Tuscan Garlic Chicken

Ingredients • ¾ cup all purpose flour • ½ Tablespoon salt • 1 teaspoon pepper • ½ tsp dried basil • ½ teaspoon dried oregano • 4 boneless skinless chicken breasts • 5 Tablespoons extra virgin olive oil, divided • 1 Tablespoon finely minced garlic • 1 red bell pepper, cut into thin strips or chopped • ½ cup low sodium chicken broth • 6 ounces fresh spinach • ½ cup heavy cream • 2 Tablespoons cornstarch • 1 cup lowfat milk • 1 cup freshly grated parmesan cheese • 1 pound fettucini noodles

Instructions Preheat oven to 350. Combine the flour, salt, pepper, basil, and oregano. Dip each chicken breast in the flour mixture and coat well. In a large skillet, heat 3 Tablespoons oil until hot. Carefully place the breaded chicken in the oil until each side is golden brown. Don’t cook all the way through. On a cookie sheet, line with aluminum foil and spray with cooking spray. Place the chicken breasts on the cookie sheet and bake for about 15 minutes until cooked through. Set aside until ready to use. While the chicken is cooking, in a large pot cook the fettucini noodles according to package News@TownAndCountryGazette.com || AUGUST 16, 2018
