After a spring semester of remote learning during the Covid-19 spread, for those sending children back to the classroom – whether pre-K or high school – for safety sake, proper preparation is needed. Here are some tips to keep your child and your home as safe as possible: Sick Child Establish a quick morning routine to check your child for fever, cough or any other sign of illness. Most experts say you should not send your child to school if they are ill. School Supplies When your child heads out the door their backpack should have all their personal school supplies for the day. To prevent the spread of the virus, schools will not be able to provide communal supplies like pencils, pens and so forth. Hand Sanitizer Be sure your child is packing a hand sanitizer to use during the school day. Sanitizers should have a 60% or higher alcohol base that will kill most types of bacteria, viruses and fungi. There are actually keychains with small, fun containers you can fill

2020 Back-to-School Shopping
SOURCE: Various
As the pandemic continues into the new school year, not only is it wreaking havoc on school reopening plans, but it also changes what parents are shopping for in preparation for sending their children back to school. Those changes are driving changes in retail as well, including the creation of new resource opportunities for both parents and teachers. Shopping Adjustments Overall, many parents are holding back on
spending this year due to the uncertainty of the situation. That said parents are stepping up purchases of masks and other protective equipment and also electronics. On one hand parents are generally looking for the same school supplies they always have, but on the other, according to Jill Renslow, senior vice president at Mall of America, “People just don’t know what they need.” Retail Adjustments As more schools shift to virtual lesson plans, and the move to online shopping and resources continues, retailers are adjusting. For instance, Walmart has developed designated areas for teachers, as well as virtual learning tools on its website. Best Buy, which sells more consumer electronics than anyone else, is now focusing more on services. Those services include a new tool called Parent Hub that provides tips and resources for parents to help them navigate their children’s distance learning. So the pandemic is changing many things, and this year’s back-to-school shopping prep is one of them.

“Here we go again.” This is the prevailing sentiment in millions of homes these days as many families gear up for another semester of virtual learning due to the coronavirus pandemic. This time around, it seems everyone is determined to make the experience better. For students, this could mean fewer boring Zoom calls, more engaging lessons and opportunities to build camaraderie with new classmates. For parents, it could mean less of an emphasis on playing the facilitator and more flexibility to focus on their own jobs. For teachers, the new approach hopefully will

translate into a greater ability to educate instead of taming technology. Here are seven tips for making the fall semester of virtual learning better than the spring. Organize When a child's physical surroundings are organized it enables them to do better work. Physical organization leads to mental organization. Organization is a key to ensuring virtual school is more productive in the fall than it was in the spring. Post a Schedule Posting a schedule lets kids know what's next. This is precisely what most teachers do, especially those who spend their days educating students under the age of 10. The key is routine and structure. Designated Learning Area Creating a designated learning area is another key to helping virtual learners stay organized. This can range from a nook or alcove, to a shed in the backyard, as long as the shed has electricity, Wi-Fi and an air-conditioning unit to keep your student cool. Communicate with Teachers Parents and teachers should remain in regular contact this fall to understand expectations and make sure that kids don't fall behind. These communications can take any form: email, text messages, phone calls or private videoconferences on Zoom or Google Meeting. Supplement Curriculum Most schools teach kids just what the state requires them to learn. For parents who want to expand on that and leverage the flexibility of virtual AUGUST 20, 2020 || townandcountrygazette.com

valuable courses through local two- and four-year colleges or their online course providers. Get Outside Another great way to keep kids engaged throughout a day of virtual learning is to get them outside every now and then. One of the easiest ways to motivate kids to spend more time outside is to build open-air play zones for them – “mud kitchens” and art centers. Anyplace where kids can create and let their imaginations run wild will be the kinds of places they want to be. Family Mission Statement Perhaps the best way to keep kids and parents focused on the goals of virtual learning for the fall is to create a mission statement for the entire family. This helps families understand what to prioritize throughout the virtual learning experience and how to show up for each other. The experience of online learning doesn't have to be bad. There are ways to make it more engaging and effective than it was in the spring. Here are some questions to help you determine the quality and characteristics of your child’s school's virtual learning program. Will you have the tech and a teacher for online learning? (If not, ask for paper) Because virtual teaching is so new, not every school or teacher is fully prepared. For virtual learning, your child will need a computer, internet access and a teacher who is comfortable teaching online. If you don't have the technology your child needs, or if the teacher seems to be struggling, ask whether there's a plan to receive high-quality, tailored materials in print form. Whether online or paper-and-pencil, remote instruction should include study materials and assignments. Will there be a common online learning platform? When schools moved online in the spring harried parents had to figure out multiple logins for multiple platforms. Determine the plans at your school for learning platforms this fall. Will there be live, virtual instruction? Experts feel that in a virtual learning environment, instruction should be live, with consistent teachers and a consistent schedule to give children a regular class schedule with attendance taken. What kind of individual communication will my child receive? Students learning virtually may never meet their teacher in person, so determining how and how frequently your child will receive feedback is very important. What's the plan for grading, attendance and testing?

In the spring, many schools did away with grades altogether and didn't penalize children who missed online class. This fall, parents should ask how that will change. Will attendance count by simply signing in – or by completing assignments? Will your student be assessed on their work through online tests or some kind of performance or project? Also, how will schools maintain the integrity of tests when children can take them online at home, potentially outside the supervision of an adult? What are accommodations for students with special needs, or students learning English? In general, students with disabilities and students still learning English have not been well-served by remote learning. Some concerns can be addressed with online accommodations such as closed captioning, speech-to-text or text-to-speech programs, translation programs and tools to support learners with physical impairments. If any of this applies to your child, find out how their school will be handling this in the virtual setting. What feedback can you offer your school? Successful distance learning requires families to be more involved in their children's education. There's an upside: Districts that incorporate feedback from teachers, parents and students are far more likely to make things work better for everybody. Find out how to provide feedback. What do teachers plan to not cover this year? Despite the best intentions, it is likely schools won't be able to cover the same amount of content teaching virtually. Ask teachers how they plan to cover topics so children don’t fall behind.

Saving School’s Special Moments SOURCE: USA TODAY
High school and college seniors face the prospect of losing their last school years to COVID-19, and 5-year-olds are missing the exciting first day of kindergarten. There’s no question salvaging special back-to-school moments during a pandemic won’t be easy, but it can be done. Here are some ideas: Continue the countdown / Online or in-person, the first day of school is something your child should happily anticipate. Countdown the days in creative ways: • Fill a jar with pieces of candy (or a healthier alternative) – one for each day until school begins, • Use a wall calendar and have your child draw a picture each day to count down, or • Create a countdown banner that holds 30 special notes to read one a day until the first day of school. Senior Portraits and Memories / With no sports, clubs or student gatherings this fall, start compiling new and old photos of your child into a printed or virtual photo album to keep track of fall memories. For your student’s senior portrait, take the portrait at home, whether formal or casual. "It's most
effective to take 100 photos or more and then select the best," advises homeschooling high school expert Lee Binz. "Try to get photos with beloved pets and locations." Take their 'first-day-of-school' photo / Even though classes are online, you're still going to want to remember your child's first day. Try making a sign for your child to hold in a special "first-dayof-school" photo. Be sure your sign includes your child’s name, age and school name. Surprise Room Makeover / This year, since your student won’t be able to decorate her dorm room or personalize his locker, give them a surprise bedroom makeover. Be sure and include enough work space to accommodate their devices. New First-Day Outfit / While you're hitting the back-to-school sales, let your child choose some trendy and special outfits for their first virtual day of school. A new outfit can really get your child into the back-to-school spirit. A Special Lunch / With school cafeterias closed your child has the opportunity to eat some delicious homemade lunches. Those can include sandwiches, pasta salads with meat and veggies, rolled-up cold cuts and string cheese, as well as yogurt with fruit. Place a note in their lunch bag to make the experience even more special for them. School Supply Magic / Just because many classes

are online doesn't mean your student won't need scissors, crayons, markers and other school supplies. A gift of new school supplies can work like magic to get your child excited. Show-and-Tell Dinner / Let your children share their favorite toys or momentos at the dinner table as a substitute for the traditional school time showand-tell. Maybe they can share a piece of art they created and explain what it means to them during a family dinner.
After-School Activities / Balance the virtual learning with some fun in the sun. Get everyone outside for some sidewalk chalk drawing, a backyard scavenger hunt or a visit to a park you haven’t gone to in a while. At the end of the day, let your child enjoy a plate of fresh brownies or homemade cookies. If you can involve them in the mixing and pouring of ingredients, they can even have a fun chemistry and fraction practice along the way.

9th June 1897 Mr. Editor,
The times have changed profoundly. Long age one thought things went fast when it came by canal boat. In this time, it seems that everything is hitched to a lightning bolt. Everything chases vigorously like a bull on a haystack when one gets in his sight. Even courting is not done like it had been when I went to see Nancy (his wife). In that time a boy went rather early Saturday evening to her home. They ate at the table [with her family] and he was allowed to sleep with his girl that night. Now people would stand themselves on their heads, when that would happen today. This makes me think upon the time when I first went to see girls. I was young and bashful, but good looking and big for my age. Of course, Nancy knows nothing about this and she will be terribly angry when she reads this; she always thought she had been the

only girl that I had. She also had other beaus; that I am sure. As I said, I was awfully shy, but once on one Saturday a pair of my buddies came and did not give up until I would go with them to another neighborhood, where there were girls. They told me there was a pretty, young girl there who had just given up here beau, and they were sure she would want to have me. Well I went along and we soon met three girls and the one should be mine. The other two couples went their way and I went home with Lilly. When we came into the room there were actually six other boys siting there – waiting to make an agreement with Lilly. We boys spoke with each other for a long time about farming, about the cows and horses and pigs and anything else that simply came to one’s mind. Finally, one left and said however to Lilly she should come out on the porch with him. But she soon came back in – that guy was sent off. One after another finally went off that way until just Lilly and I were left alone in the room. But I have to tell you that the second last guy did not want to give up – he was rightfully a ‘dating braggart.’ He talked about everything that he knew about and also things that he knew nothing about. Lilly also gave him his walking papers. Now we were completely alone – Lilly and I; but what were we to do now? You don’t have to think that I will be telling everything that happened! you had worked through something like this before you rightly knew what was going on. Perhaps you also did such dumb antics and I was as green as they come. Lilly was mighty nice girl and very understanding and I did not want it to be obvious to her that I was so dumb and inexperienced, but I think she soon saw it. I heard the boys always say one should turn down the light and I went to do that. I was, I think, very nervous and I turned it down too hard and it went out. When I wanted to get a match to light it again, Lilly said I did not need to do that – the moon was certainly shining. She did not ponder on the fact that

the shutters were all closed tightly! She made me feel good that she did not become angry, and I was well pleased that in my excitement I still gave Lilly an enthusiastic kiss! Lilly still did not become angry and from then on it went from one thing to another. When it was time to end this encounter, Lilly said I was the best beau she had had. But I did not marry Lilly, but her sister, Nancy. [Joseph H. Light was born in Avon, just east of the city of Lebanon, Lebanon County, Pennsylvania, on 11 March 1849. After attending public schools, he enrolled in the Lebanon Valley College, taught district school for four terms, and then became an apprentice at the German language newspaper Der Pennsylvanier, where he learned the printing trade, soon became a part owner, and stayed on for eight years. He next became publisher and editor of the Lebanon County Independent (1882), then part owner and editor of the Lebanon Daily News (1892) and the Semi-Weekly News (1894). Death occurred quite unexpectedly on the morning of 26 April 1901, from heart failure resulting from what had been thought to be a simple case of grippe. In 1928, one of Light's sons published forty-four of his father’s PG letters that had appeared in the SemiWeekly News between 28 October 1896 and 6 October 1897, under the pen name ''Der Alt Schulmeschter." Most of his letters attacked the failings of humanity in a less than subtle manner. But the above letter is one of the exceptions to his usual lecture and

Rotary Club of Slatington Celebrates 95th Year by Donating Over $19,000 to Local Organizations, Scholarships and Community Projects ^ƵďŵŝƚƚĞĚ ďLJ ƌŝĐ ,ĞŝŶĞLJ
Submitted by Eric Heiney
The Rotary Club of Slatington has been meeting weekly since 1925 with the goal of community improvement paired with fellowship. Currently we meet at a pavilion built by the club in honor of Rotary International’s Centennial in 2005. It is located along the D&L Trail at the Lehigh Gap Nature Center. During winter months the club meets at Woodstone Country Club located in Danielsville. With the Northern Lehigh community support at our fundraisers, the club was able to fund grants to the following organizations: NL Food Bank, Slatington Public Library, NL Recreation Authority, Walnutport Canal Association, Springside Sportsmen Club, Lehigh Gap Nature Center, and Walnutport Playground. In addition, five scholarships were awarded to 2020 Northern Lehigh graduates Benjamin Lehman, Carter Smith, Paige Bauer, Nathan Green, and Tyler Sherman. Our community improvement projects for the past year were successful. Rotary funded a new sign outside the Slatington Library, volunteered at NL Food Bank, cleaned up at Slatington Veterans Memorial, volunteered at NL Recreation Authority Candy Cane Hunt, stocked trout with Springside
Sportsmen Club, built r a i s e d gardens at Second Harvest Food Bank, organized Josh the Otter youth swimming safety reading program held at the Slatington Library, played ball with youth at Miracle League Lehigh Valley, raised funds for Dream Come True at Walnutport Playground, handed out water during the D&L Half Marathon and our Purple Pinkie 5K held at LCCC raised funds to eradicate Polio around the world. All of this was possible because of strong community support at our fundraisers. We thank everyone who bought a 2020 lottery calendar, attended gift card / cash bingo held in February at the Friedens Fire Company, and all fans who attended our 39th annual Christmas Basketball Tournament held at the Northern Lehigh High School. If you are interested in joining our club or purchasing a 2021 lottery calendar, please contact Eric Heiney at usa1eric@ptd.net or 610-762-1196.

Slatington Library Book Club Donates Books
Recently, the Slatington Library Book Club, in conjunction with the Slatington Public Library, made a donation of books to Phoebe Allentown. Carol MacCrindle, a book club member, recently became a resident at Phoebe. Learning of the lack of reading materials available to residents like Carol at the retirement community, book club members and the librarians sent Carol an abundant collection of new reading materials, both for her to enjoy and to then share with other Phoebe residents by adding them to its lending library. Long a dream of Mrs. MacCrindle, the Slatington Library Book Club was begun in the fall of 2015. The club meets the first Monday of each month; contact the library for further information.
1. You or your physician call in for prescription(s) or OTC medications. For routine medications, please call a day or two ahead. 2. When your order has been prepared, the pharmacy will call to notify you that it is ready. 3. Give your credit/debit card information over the phone. 4. When you arrive, please park directly in front of the pharmacy and call the pharmacy from your cell phone. Give the full name of the person for whom you are picking up. 5. We will bring your medications to your car. Please open the passenger side window of your car so we can drop your package into the passenger seat. Delivery to homebound patients will continue as always. Please note: If you have been diagnosed with, been exposed to, or are exhibiting symptoms of COVID 19 (fever, cough, sore throat, difficult breathing), please let us know so that we can take the necessary precautions to protect ourselves. This may mean we will leave your package on the hood of your car for curbside delivery or outside your door if delivering to your home, in order to avoid direct contact. Your patience, understanding and loyalty are appreciated as we navigate these difficult times.

ones that best suit your student’s age and grade level. For example, for preschoolers and kindergarteners, play should be the foundation of your homeschooling environment. On the other hand, some high school homeschoolers may benefit from year-long, online courses in a variety of subjects. This is another place to use your local, homeschool groups and networks for guidance and relevant information. 4. Explore Neighborhood Resources / Homeschoolers often spend much of their time outside of their homes with extracurricular activities, visiting libraries and museums and so on. This fall will likely be a very different experience. Still, it’s worth seeing what in-person daytime programming and resources will be available near you. Again, connecting with your homeschooling network can help. 5. Collaborate with Others / This fall many parents will be continuing to work from home, making homeschooling challenging and requiring flexibility and planning. Collaborate with others. By collaborating with other local parents and neighbors, relying on babysitters and being creative with your fall learning plan, homeschooling will be more feasible and fulfilling. 6. Enjoy This Moment / Homeschooling does not have to be a long-term commitment, but while

Helping Your Child Succeed – Part 1 by Christine Allen, president of Reading Escapades & Math Explorers, Inc.
I have many questions from parents whose children are going to be home either by choice or by district decisions. How you set up your home is crucial to success and routines are important. I understand that you are worried, but once you know what to do, and get in a routine, everything will be OK! With proper knowledge and routines, not only will this school year be a success, but you’ll help your children gain skills that will help them throughout their lives. The most important place to start is to: Create a sacred space to work. Having a space just for work, and making sure your children have everything they need is critical for productivity and good study habits. If you have a small living space and don’t have enough space for a dedicated study area, gather all the supplies they need into a basket or other container they like so that they can grab it each day and bring it to their space. The space really should be the same place, like the kitchen table. I know how busy you are – but YOU must be the one to make sure the table is
cleared off and clean. They will not be the ones to do it; remove the excuse that there is no place for them to work. Once the routine is in place, your child will take over but for now, you have to step up and be the one to make sure this happens. Something to note is that while most kids prefer to work in their room, unless you have a motivated learner, this is the worst place they can be. There are too many distractions, especially the phone. For these kids, don’t make it a punishment to be in the kitchen or other common area, but rather a way to help them get done their responsibilities so they can do whatever they want without the looming guilt of not doing what they need to do. **HUGE EASY HINT*** One of the best routines that I have in place for my own children is to sharpen every pencil on Sunday morning. We have been doing this for years and it is so very simple, but when you don’t have to search for the tools you need, EVERYTHING runs so much smoother. No matter what you do, it will help your child keep up their education and keep learning. This crisis is a perfect opportunity to learn that learning does not only exist in a classroom but rather is all around us. If you would like help in this journey, please reach out to us at www.read2day.com or on our Facebook page www.facebook.com/read2day and we can help guide you what is best for your family

College Checklist for Parents SOURCE: AARP
If you’re sending your child back to college, or off to college for the first time, this year’s shopping and packing lists include some new COVID-era necessities. While some colleges are holding face-to-face classes, many others are taking classes online for the semester. Either way, many students will be back in dorms, apartments and fraternity and sorority houses, where they will be exposed to new people – and possibly COVID-19. So how should you equip your college-bound student to give them the best chance of staying healthy – or recovering quickly – if they do contract the virus? Masks Start with masks — and a lot of them. If you're going with disposables, your child is likely to need more than you think. Reusable cloth masks are also a good idea, including those with a pocket for a filter that provides added protection. But make sure all these masks are comfortable, because students may have to spend hours wearing them. Noting that hygiene is not always the top priority with young people – including by way of doing

laundry – Leann Poston, a physician and educator with Invigor Medical, suggests providing enough cloth masks for a week and a box of disposable masks. Thermometer & Pulse Oximeter Although about 40 percent of COVID-19 patients don’t get a fever, be sure and include a digital oral thermometer with disposable probe covers, or even a faster infrared forehead thermometer. Also include a pulse oximeter, which will measure the blood’s oxygen level. These are relatively inexpensive and can help determine when a COVID-19 patient should seek medical care. HIPPA Release & Medical Power of Attorney Included with this article is a checklist of college necessities that you, as a parent, should be certain your student is equipped with for college, but first, there are two extremely important items to highlight. Given that parents lose the ability to access their child's medical records without permission once that child turns 18, it's a good idea to have a signed Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) release and a medical power of attorney form available online. These give health care providers permission to release and share medical information with parents and guardians in an emergency.

2020 Distinguished Alumni Award Celebration Postponed The Distinguished Alumni Award Committee of the Northampton Area Konkrete Kids Educational Foundation has announced that it has postponed the Distinguished Alumni Award Celebration for this year’s six Northampton Distinguished Alumni honorees from August 30 to Friday, April 23, 2021. the health risks to the guests and the six honorees are just too significant at this time. The Committee members also realized that they would not be able to have the same type of memorable event that truly acknowledges and celebrates the accomplishments of the honorees as done at previous Celebrations if they adhere to the health guidelines currently in place for large group events. The April 23, 2021, Distinguished Alumni Award Celebration will be held at Woodstone Country Club. Updated and detailed information about the Celebration will be publicized in March 2021 and will be available at the Foundation’s website konkretefoundation.org.
