Lehigh Township Historical Society News Submitted by RUTH HALL KENT
You haven’t heard from the Society in long while as we have been closed due to the pandemic. It’s like riding a roller coaster, so we’ve decided to not open the museum this summer for our seasonal Open House visitations until it’s safe. We are proud to announce the completion of our new sign in front of the Historical Centre in Pennsville which was partially funded with the assistance of the Northampton County Hotel Tax Grant (2019). Additional funding for the sign came partly from the Lehigh Township Board of Supervisors annual donations along with membership donations from several of LTHS business sponsors: J.T. Lelo Trucking LLC, Point Phillips Hotel, Henry’s Service Station, the Lehigh Township Lions Club and the LTHS general account. The sign was built by FastSigns of Allentown and the landscape and lighting work was done by PSA Turf and Irrigation Inc. of Danielsville. Cleaning out while you are stuck at home? Remember that our mission is to preserve the history of the Lehigh Township and we welcome any old or historical items that can be added to our Lehigh township historical society

Don’t throw things out, even if you think they are not worth keeping. Contact us and we will decide if the articles are worthy of being entered into our archives for future research or display. Items from old businesses; old political items; farm, household and personal items; books; calendars and newspapers that have been stashed in the back of a drawer or closet may be great things to donate to our museum and share with others for a flashback to the past! He dropped out of his biology major with one semester to finish and began playing coffee shops, cafes, opera houses, pubs etc. in the greater Philadelphia area. verbal stylings as its calming properties evoke people to listen, think, and smile.

Slatington Public Library’s Children’s Book Giveaway
The past few months have had a severe impact on the Library’s mission of literacy to our patrons. We are especially aware of the negative impact on the children in our community. The library held a very successful Dr. Seuss’ Birthday Party in the beginning of March, and then COVID-19 stopped everything. There was no Woman’s Club Arts Program, PreSchool Story Hour, or Wonderful World of Wildlife story hour. The Slatington Public Library Board and Staff are pleased to announce a new program for our youngsters. We will be giving away books. Six books will be placed in a paper bag for the children to take and add to their home library. Stop in the library to pick up your free books. Reading is fundamental to a child’s education, and it is fun.

The rabbits and the foxes bid one another good night When I was just a youngster, so young and small, I already found out that I could not understand much Of matters, places and things and how everything is put together And where the rabbits and foxes bid each other good night.
It is at the end of this world, Where the rabbits bid the foxes, “Good night.” Continued on page 14

I thought that it was terrible that people could live that way Away from others without amusements out where civilization ends; Where the moon every evening comes up like a big yellow ball And where if I had cried out the answer was in my echo. That was childish thoughts and was not the world for me; I had dreamed of race horses, and pretty girls and money, And railroads and city folks and good things to eat; And since I was just a country bumpkin I thought I could forget about that. I went from home to the nice large city to earn my living Among the rich people so friendly everyone would make one laugh; But, say, was I mistaken

through the many long years! What I learned and saw and heard with my own ears. The people run back and forth they have little time to talk And be friendly and orderly and sit a little; And the cars speed along, they go like the devil. Do you think they have a good time? – Well, I doubt it. The young carry on until midnight they don’t go to bed, And the women are walking all over the place with dogs on the leash; And everyone considers himself better than the other man; Especially when he has a lot of money, and can earn still more. A barroom sits on every corner; then a guy stumbles out; He staggers around the corners in circles and out Into the street; there he fights with an elderly woman,

Then the policemen come – Soon they join the fight. I am terribly depressed; oh, if I would just be back In the mountains, out in the country, fishing at a creek, Where I could breathe the fresh air, not filled with gas and dust, And where the trees are blooming, and the woods are nicely green with foliage. Yes, I was stupid, I know that; there was a smarter man; (The older that I am, the better I can see it.) And that was he who stayed back – that I have observed well – Where the rabbits and the foxes bid each other good night. Out there where the world lies in quiet, where everything is so free, Where the wild animals and the tame ones, can be at peace; I want to go there, I will go quickly there with a great and strong determination, Where the rabbits and the foxes
bid each other good night. So we learn from this life in a long hard-knocks school, And the best way that one can learn, is with the Golden Rule In a place filled with peace and freedom – keep that in mind – Where the rabbits and the foxes bid each other good night! [It is interesting that a phrase similar to the title of this article still exists in Germany today. “Wo sich Fuchs und Hase gute Nacht sagen” (Where the fox and the rabbit say goodnight.) is an idiom used for “in the middle of nowhere,” or perhaps, “out in the boonies (boondocks),” and that is also the meaning conveyed here.]

Your CBD Store and SunMed:
Leading the way in natural healing alternatives. There are so many questions surrounding the CBD boom today. "What does CBD do?" "Is it safe?" "Does it get you high?" "How do I know where to buy it?" These are a few of the many questions that Ben and Sandra Freeman received when they opened their first location at 430 Northampton St., Easton PA. Founder Rachel Quinn, started using CBD because she suffered from Crohn's disease, a form of inflammatory bowel disease. The issue she discovered was you never really could trust what you were buying. CBD mostly sold online, at gas stations, and smoke shops at that time and no one really knew how to answer questions for her when asked. Rachel's mission was to create a boutique style store with a focus on the education on CBD products and transparency with 3rd party independent lab reports on products. As a result of offering superior customer service and an education first structure, Your CBD Store has grown from just a few locations in South Florida to the largest brick and mortar CBD retailer in the country with over 600 locations nationwide. CBD is closely related to another important medicinally active phytocannabinoid: THC, the compound that causes the high that cannabis is famous for. These are the two components of cannabis that have been most studied by scientists. Both CBD and THC have significant therapeutic attributes. But unlike THC, CBD does not make a person feel "stoned" or intoxicated. That's because CBD and THC act in different ways on different receptors in the brain and body. CBD can actually lessen or neutralize

Skin Safety Tips for Summer
In terms of premature aging of the skin, the National Institute on Aging has pointed to sunlight as a major culprit for causing wrinkles, dryness, and age spots. To protect your skin – especially during the summer months, you need to block harmful rays when you’re out during the day; even during cloudy days. Sun Shields Sunscreen is a highly recommended defense against sunburn and skin cancer. Make sure to apply it 15 to 30 minutes before you go out. If you swim, sweat, or are outdoors for a long time, reapply every two hours. Your sunscreen should be water resistant, SPF 15 or higher and provide broadspectrum protection, which will protect your skin
from both UVB light, the major culprit for sunburn and skin cancer, and UVA light, which is responsible for premature aging and also skin cancer. Clothing and Lip Balm Regarding clothing, start with a hat, but remember, a baseball cap leaves your ears exposed. Hats with broad brims are best. According to the Skin Cancer Foundation, clothes with certain qualities can prevent harmful rays from reaching the skin. Clothes made of darker materials tend to absorb UV light, keeping it away from your body, and clothes with tight weaves or knits also prevent penetration of harmful rays. To fully protect lips look for lip-specific products that have SPF 15 or higher. Use a lip balm with SPF 30 or higher if you have a history of lip or skin cancer. Apply lip product about every two hours. Sunglasses and Cosmetics Over time, prolonged UV exposure can also cause eye problems, such as cataracts and macular degeneration. To prevent eye damage, choose sunglasses that offer UV 400 protection and are impact resistant. Can makeup protect against the sun’s harmful rays? The answer is a qualified “yes.” Mineral makeup, darker foundations, powders, and eye shadows do have better sun-protective qualities than other cosmetics. For best protection apply a sunscreen first and then the makeup. Young in the Sun Children are actually more susceptible to the ravages of the sun than adults. An interesting fact: The American Academy of Dermatology estimates that kids get 80% of their total lifetime sun exposure by the time they turn 18. If a blistering sunburn is a part of that, the risk of deadly skin cancer doubles later in life. In general, it’s a good idea for kids (and adults) to stay out of the sun between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. Babies younger than 6 months should be kept out of the sun. Kids over 6 months should always wear sunscreen with SPF 15 or higher. For kids who spend a lot of time outdoors and who also have fair skin, light-colored eyes and hair, SPF 30 or higher is suggested.

Movement for Mental and Physical Health Physical movement goes well beyond physical health. From easing symptoms of depression, to relieving stress to protecting the body from injury, exercise has many benefits. Here are just a few to consider. Lower Stress Exercise yields many mental health benefits, including stress reduction. Physical activity increases the production of neurohormones that moderate the brain’s stress response. Less Anxiety When you choose to move, a lot happens in the body and some of that activity takes place in the brain. Aerobic exercise in particular (any type of cardio that gets your blood flowing) has been shown to benefit mood disorders and generally reduce anxiety. Happy Feelings Runner’s high, endorphins — whatever you want to call it, being active causes the brain to release feel-good chemicals that boost your mood. That’s the reason you almost always feel better after a workout than when you started.
Greater Self-Confidence Even if you don’t lose a single pound, research shows that getting physical can boost feelings of self-esteem and improve self-image, helping you feel better about yourself. When you combine your exercise with nature it only amplifies the selfesteem-boosting benefits. Better Sleep A good night’s sleep makes everything better. According to research associated with the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey, people sleep significantly better and feel more alert during Continued on page 22

physical activity can enhance your creativity. When stuck on a problem, that burst of exercise might provide just the creativity needed to help you figure out the situation. Lower Injury Risk A well-rounded workout routine – especially one that incorporates strengthtraining, can greatly reduce the chance of a muscle injury during a regular activity. This becomes even more important as you age. Stronger Immune System A sustained habit of exercise helps slow down the changes that happen to the immune system over time, keeping you healthier for longer. Not only does your mental and physical health benefit from exercise, but exercise is also associated with increased longevity and lower risks for age-related diseases.

Strength Training at 60+ SOURCE: AARP Magazine
Strong muscles help you stay independent and energetic. But aging depletes 20 percent of muscle mass by the time you hit 60. The life-changing fix? Strength training. Try this. Bring in experts First, talk to your doctor about how much and what type of strength training are best for you. Then work with an instructor or trainer to learn proper form. Aim for 2 sessions of 20 to 30 minutes each week Research suggests that two are better than three for older adults. Be sure to leave two or three days for rest between each session. Pick what you like Options include resistance bands, barbells, exercise machines or simply moves that use your own weight. Find the right weight for you Choose weights or resistance bands that tire you out after eight to 12 repetitions. That’s one set. Aim for two or three sets of each exercise. Eat protein Try eggs or yogurt at breakfast, three-bean chili or a chicken sandwich at lunch, fish for dinner, and a glass of milk or handful of nuts for a snack.

Natural Stress Remedies for Right Now (excerpted) By Hallie Levine, AARP Magazine
Even if you’re not prone to panic, dealing with day-to-day life during the coronavirus pandemic is enough to trigger anxiety. But with the right tools, you can help buffer it. Here are a few natural ways to do just that. The Right Foods The right foods can help you manage your stress. Fatty fish, leafy greens and protein in the morning can all help. Fatty fish are rich in the omega-3 fatty acids EPA and DHA. People who get more than 2,000 grams of fish oil a day have reported improvements in their anxiety symptoms. That can be difficult to get from food alone (five ounces of salmon, for example, has about 1,200 grams), so it’s reasonable to add a supplement. Having low blood levels of magnesium can be associated with an increased risk of depression. The recommended dietary allowance for adults over the age of 30 is 320 mg a day for women and 420 mg a day for men. To give you an idea of foods that provide magnesium, an ounce (about a handful) of almonds has 80 mg, a half-cup of boiled spinach has 78, a half-cup of 24
cooked black beans has 60, and two tablespoons of peanut butter have 49. According to Elsa Orivel, a dietician with Foodvisor, protein in the morning can help even out your mood during the day because it helps synthesize serotonin, a brain hormone responsible for helping to lower anxiety and boost mood. She recommends 15 grams at breakfast (the equivalent of about two large eggs). Staying Active — especially outdoors As you probably already know, exercise can help boost both your mood and your physical health.

According to research, people who do their exercise outdoors report feeling more energy, and less tension and depression, than those who work out indoors. What’s more, a 90-minute walk in nature lowers activity in the part of the brain linked to negative rumination. If you’re somewhere where you can’t easily get outdoors, like an apartment complex or nursing home, then any type of indoor physical activity – even just walking up and down a flight of stairs– can help. Slow Down Before Bed Anxiety makes it hard to fall asleep at night and then sleep deprivation makes your mood worse the next day. Try resetting your nighttime routine. Ninety minutes before bed, hop into a warm bath or shower. When you’re done, your body temperature will decrease, helping produce melatonin naturally. Once you’ve toweled off, give yourself an electronic curfew. This means no CNN, and no checking Facebook or Twitter. You need time to relax and destress. Finish with some deep breathing exercises before bed. Try “4-7-8” breathing. In a comfortable position, with your eyes open or closed, inhale for four seconds, hold your breath for seven seconds, and exhale slowly for eight seconds. Repeat several times. As a result, you’re mimicking the breathing patterns of sleep onset. With luck, your body will soon follow. AUGUST 6, 2020 || townandcountrygazette.com

Chair Yoga: Getting Started SOURCE: Allinahealth.org
Yoga has been shown to improve overall health when practiced regularly. As with many forms of exercise, it can be modified for people of varying abilities. Chair yoga is a gentle form of yoga that can be done sitting on a chair or standing on the ground while using the chair for support. In that sense, chair yoga can be done just about anywhere. It is beneficial if you have limited mobility or if you want to practice yoga while at work. Chair yoga, which can be done alone or in a group, can improve your flexibility, concentration and strength, while boosting your mood, and reducing stress and joint strain. Here are a few simple chair yoga exercises to get you started: Seated Cat Cow Start with your hands on your thighs and sit up tall. As you exhale, round your back, pulling your abdominals into your spine, tucking your tailbone under and tucking your chin into your chest. Be as round in the upper back as you can, pushing your mid-back towards the chair. This is cat pose.
As you inhale, allow your belly to move forward, arch your back, send your sternum forward and look up towards the ceiling (if your neck is comfortable), or keep your head parallel to the floor. This is cow pose. Repeat this motion several times, inhaling into cat and exhaling into cow.

How to Make a Mask SOURCE: JOANN.com
Several readers have asked us to share instructions for making a simple mask to wear during this virus era. Here is a beginner-level, mask-making pattern, along with directions and supply list. Supplies & Tools • 100% cotton fabric for mask • 2 yds twill tape trim for ties (or make your own) • Pattern template (see illustration) • Basic sewing supplies Directions 1. Cut out patterns using cutting directions on the pattern. 32
2. Seam allowance is 1/4" unless stated otherwise. 3. For the ties, cut twill tape into four 18" pieces. Fold one end of each under twice and stitch to finish the ends. Set aside. 4. Match outer mask pieces right sides together, and sew the outer curve. Repeat with lining pieces. 5. Open both mask halves and press both seam allowances to the right. 6. Topstitch down the seam allowance, about 1/4" from the seam. 7. Lay one half of the mask down with the right side facing up. Pin raw ends of ties in each corner, News@TownAndCountryGazette.com || AUGUST 6, 2020
placing them 1/2" up/down from the top and bottom edges. Finished tie ends should extend toward the middle of the mask. Once ties are pinned in place, bundle the tie ends together in the center of the mask. 8. Match front and back piece right sides together, nesting center front seams. 9. Pin and sew around the exterior of the mask, leaving a small opening at the bottom of the mask between the center front seam and corner. 10. Clip across corners, taking care not to cut through the stitching. 11. Turn mask right side out and press. 12. Topstitch around the mask, closing the hole at the bottom in the process.

vegetables in the summer, you will need the ability to measure the temperature in the greenhouse at all times so the collected heat from the sun doesn’t overwhelm your plants, which it can easily do. For summer growing in your greenhouse you will want to look at ventilation options as part of the project. Winter Heating Since we are looking at the greenhouse to extend your growing season through the cooler and cold months, should it be heated? Although a lot of sun will pour in by day, if you have an uninsulated greenhouse, at night your greenhouse will cool off
quickly. Some kind of heating system will likely be needed. Search for “greenhouse heating requirements” online to find information around that, as well as tips on how to insulate your greenhouse in cooler months. It doesn’t have to be complicated, nor overly expensive. In the end, if you want to extend this year’s growing season for your vegetables and herbs, the time to start planning and building your greenhouse is now.

Agriculture Department warns consumers to Report unsolicited, mislabeled seeds Received by mail Submitted by SHANNON POWERS
Agriculture Secretary Russell Redding has warned consumers to properly discard and report unordered and mislabeled seeds shipped from overseas. Consumers nationwide have received seeds in packages labeled as jewelry. These seeds may contain plant diseases, weeds or invasive plants that could harm Pennsylvania’s agriculture industry and ecosystem. “Seeds sold in Pennsylvania are rigorously tested to ensure that they are genetically pure and regulated to ensure that what’s on the label is what’s in the package,” Secretary Redding said. “Planting seeds without knowing what they are can wreak havoc with our environment, destroy agricultural

crops and incur costly control efforts for years to come.” Seeds labelled as jewelry are likely a scam known as “brushing.” Companies boost online sales by purchasing their own products through fake buyer accounts created by the company. The products are shipped to a real address, to someone who didn’t order the item. The seller writes a positive review of their items from the fake buyer account. In the past, scammers have sent empty packages. Recent packages have been filled with unlabeled seeds. Consumers who receive unsolicited seeds are asked to retain the seeds and packaging. If opened, double bag and seal the seeds. Do not plant them or discard loose seeds. Report the package to the US Department of Agriculture’s (USDA) confidential Antismuggling Hotline, 800-877-3835 or email SITC.Mail@aphis. usda.gov. USDA will provide further instructions. The Pennsylvania Department of Agriculture’s seed program licenses seed distributors, and analyzes and certifies seeds to help ensure that seeds are free of pathogens, invasive plants and noxious weeds. The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation announced that expiration dates for driver licenses, identification cards, and learner’s permits, will be extended for Pennsylvania residents in response to statewide COVID-19 mitigation efforts. Effective July 23, expiration dates for driver licenses, photo ID cards and learner’s permits scheduled to expire from March 16, 2020 through Aug. 31, 2020, have been extended until Aug. 31, 2020. These extensions are in addition to those announced on June 25. A camera card is considered a driver’s license, so it is covered by the same terms and conditions extending other driver’s license products. Camera cards with expiration dates within this timeframe are also extended through Aug. 31, 2020. Additionally, limited services are available at some Driver License and Photo License Centers. For a list of open driver license and photo license centers and the services provided, as well as their hours of operation, please visit www.dmv.pa.gov. Customers may continue to complete various transactions and access multiple resources online at www.dmv.pa.gov. Driver and vehicle online services are available 24 hours a day, seven days a week and include driver’s license, photo ID and vehicle registration renewals; driver-history AUGUST 6, 2020 || townandcountrygazette.com
