Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays Everyone at Blue Mountain Town & Country Gazette wishes each of you a Merry Christmas and a warm and safe holiday season. It’s been a very tough year. Some Americans – 26 million as reported in the Washington Post – don’t have the money to buy enough food for themselves or their families this month. But with the COVID-19 vaccines getting ready for distribution and the New Year ahead with new beginnings on every front, we remain optimistic that we will all soon see a path to lead us out of these tumultuous times. In this issue we are going to give you some fun information on the history of lighting Christmas trees and the evolving “Santa experience.” We will also tell you what is going to be different with the New Year’s Eve Time Square Celebration this year in New York City. This year, perhaps more than most, many of us will be spending the Christmas alone. For some it might be an annual thing, but for many others it will be because of the pandemic. But here’s the thing: You can have a great Christmas – alone. We’re going to tell you how.

And if your family is working with the tightest of budgets this Christmas season, we’re going to give you some very doable – and generally free – ideas to still bring joy to your family. Even without the pandemic, winter months tend to keep many of us indoors more, so we have some book suggestions – both romance and suspense, as well as a great list of Christmas movie classics – some older and some newer. In regards to the book suggestions, we will also give you links to two extensive lists of books in each category. You may also find the information from those links at townandcountrygazette.com. For those of you looking for Christmas church services, you’ll find a listing for a number of those in our area, as well as some very important pet safety tips for this time of year. You will also find some of the latest information on the amazingly positive developments around COVID-19 vaccines that quite honestly, will likely have already begun distribution as you read this. As mentioned in our last issue, we are posting important vaccine-related information as it comes in at townandcountrygazette.com, so you might want to visit us there between issues. So please stay safe, please stay healthy and remember above all else, family is what this season is all about.

The Changing Santa Experience SOURCE: CNBC.com & CNN Business

The annual tradition of taking a picture with Santa that dates back to the 1800s, is being rethought this year by retailers, mall operators and the men and women who play Santa and Mrs. Claus during the holiday season. At least one retail chain is putting Santa behind plexiglass, while one entrepreneur has even launched a line of snow globes to allow Santa and

the children who visit him to do so safely. The CEO of the International Brotherhood of Real Bearded Santas says the Santa experience will be handled very differently this year and virtual visits with Santa are exploding. No Santa at Macy’s For the first time in almost 160 years, Santa will not be visiting Macy’s this holiday season. Historically, the Macy’s flagship store at New York’s Herald Square welcomed more than a quarter million visitors to Santaland, but this year, Santaland is a completely virtual experience. Macy’s launched Santaland on its website Thanksgiving weekend for families looking for holiday-related activities at home. Santa at the Mall Perhaps more urgently than other venues, shopping malls are creatively adjusting the Santa experience to adapt to today’s health concerns. In some cases visitors are being asked to make reservations to meet Santa through company websites, before their socially-distanced Santa visits and photo ops. In an effort to connect consumers with its retailers, one mall developer will hold holiday-themed scavenger hunts at some of its properties. Visitors will be able to use augmented reality and QR codes to unlock special retailer discounts on products.

a new digital experience with Santa and Mrs. Claus, as well. According to one industry expert, it’s the beginning of a virtual evolution for the Santa experience. Virtual visits with Santa can involve real-time conversations, which have become very popular. Like many new things during this pandemic era, only time will tell which ones become new permanent fixtures – in this case, for the Santa experience.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY Virtual Santas "Is the audio on?" said Mrs. Claus, leaning closer to the webcam and tapping at the iPad screen. Mr. Claus, seated to her left in front of a backdrop of a fireplace with stockings they purchased off the internet for $10, added: "Hello! Is that Jesse? I can't tell because your video isn't on." This is Santa 2020 calling. The pandemic has accelerated the number of people shopping online and it looks to be shaping

Second Harvest of Lehigh Valley and the Northeast Announce donation From Wells Fargo to help During the holidays submitted by Briana McGonagle

Wells Fargo surprised representatives from Second Harvest of the Lehigh Valley and Northeast Pennsylvania with a $50,000 donation today to assist the organization with its ongoing efforts to address food insecurity in the region. The grant will provide 300,000 meals for Lehigh Valley residents and is in addition to the $10,000 Wells Fargo previously donated to Second Harvest in 2020. “We are acutely aware of the strain that the pandemic has put on families across the Commonwealth and here in the Lehigh Valley,” said Mike Pany, Wells Fargo Community Relations Senior Consultant. “This donation is a small way that we can help support our community and ensure that no family in our region has to worry about meeting the most basic need of putting food on their tables during the holidays.” Continued on page 10

Second Harvest Continued from page 9

Wells Fargo has a deep commitment to support people facing hunger through its long-standing relationship with Feeding America®, the largest domestic hunger-relief organization in the United States, and its affiliate organizations, which includes Second Harvest. “The holidays aren't always merry for many of the families we serve, especially so this year in the wake of the pandemic. People in need are turning to the Second Harvest network in historic volumes." said Katarah Jordan, Director of Second Harvest. “We thank Wells Fargo for the additional funding this holiday season as well as for the support they provide throughout the year to address the critical issue of food insecurity.” Earlier this year, Wells Fargo launched a nationwide Drive-Up Food Bank program, in which the company helped reach families facing hunger due to the COVID-19 pandemic by working with local Feeding America member food banks to distribute food at some of the company’s branches and corporate locations. To extend this effort during the holidays, Wells Fargo is directing grants as part of its “Many Hearts. One Community.” holiday

campaign to Feeding America food banks around the country — ensuring there is food on the tables for people who need it most — and fulfilling upon the company’s commitment to help provide 82 million meals* to families in need. In addition to Second Harvest, Wells Fargo will award a total of $178,000 to seven other food banks in Pennsylvania during December to help meet the need in various areas of the state. Wells Fargo’s “Many Hearts. One Community.” holiday campaign can be found on the company’s social media channels and Wells Fargo Stories. About Second Harvest Established by the Community Action Committee of the Lehigh Valley in 1982, the Second Harvest Food Bank of the Lehigh Valley and Northeast Pennsylvania’s mission is to obtain food and distribute it to people in need through area nonprofits and to provide resources for education and advocacy to end hunger. Second Harvest operates in a six-county service area comprised of Lehigh, Northampton, Carbon, Monroe, Pike, and Wayne counties. Last year Second Harvest distributed 11.8 million pounds of food to its network of more than 200 nonprofit agencies including emergency food pantries and meal centers as well as homeless shelters, child care agencies, addiction treatment programs and just about any agency that feeds

Learning Through the Holidays Part 2 by Christine Allen, president of Reading Escapades & Math Explorers, Inc.

Do you remember playing all those board games when we were kids? I LOVED it! It is just so sad that today’s kids just seem to only want to play video games. However, once you start playing games as a family, the kids will actually love it (after they roll their eyes). You may or may not have a lot of games, but what is even better is creating games as a family. Creating your own board games out of something as easy as paper and coloring tools, or as elaborate as an enormous pizza box can be an activity for the whole family before the game even begins. First, find whatever material you would like your board game on and create a path for your characters to follow, making sure that some paths have some special paths or spaces to make the game more interesting. Then cut up some cards and write some interesting challenges on each, including some movement and special family jokes or memories; at Reading Escapades and Math Explorers we love to use games as ways to teach different lessons, so incorporating math cards or vocabulary cards can add to the uniqueness of your game cards. Remember to have both positive cards about getting

things as well as negative ones about losing things. The final step is to create or find game pieces for you to use as your person. After everyone has contributed to the creation of this game, find a good afternoon and get to playing! For more detail directions and ideas for lots of games, check out our free resource page and get our Game Guide! https://read2day.com/freeresources/

Chapter 2 1 In the time of King Herod, after Jesus was born in Bethlehem of Judea, wise men from the East came to Jerusalem, 2 asking, “Where is the child who has been born king of the Jews? Then, opening their treasure chests, they offered him gifts of gold, frankincense, and myrrh. 12 And having been warned in a dream not to return to Herod, they left for their own country by another road. Alone Christmas Continued from page 26

The Entertainment Are you a fan of movies or do you have a favorite TV show? The Christmas holiday weekend could be an awesome time to do some serious bingewatching – with no interruptions. The Connections Feeling the connection with family and friends is a meaningful part of the holidays and you can feel those connections in a couple of ways. A quality phone call to catch up could be the highlight of the holiday for all involved. A little pre-planning is a good idea here. Send an advance text or email to set up a good time to connect that works for everyone. And if you can do a Zoom call, or use FaceTime so you can see each other while you visit, even better! Another way to feel the family and friend connections is to either open all your Christmas cards at the same time, or if you’ve already opened them, gather them up and re-read the cards and letters and enjoy the pictures all over again. Other Ideas • Immerse yourself in some great music • Dive into a good book for a couple of days • Give yourself some presents! If you order them online you can have them delivered to your doorstep already gift-wrapped so when you sit down to unwrap them there might be some genuine surprises – for you! This year, whether due to the pandemic or something else, do a little advance thinking and prep, and then have yourself a great Christmas – alone! Christmas on a Tight Budget SOURCE: MomHacks101.com

This year has been tough on many people because of the challenging economy. For families already struggling to pay bills and buy food it’s hard to figure out how to provide a good Christmas for your kids when your budget is so tight. But there are ways to make the Christmas season joyful even on a tight budget, simply by being creative and thinking of some smart, frugal ideas for Christmas gifts and activities. Here are some suggestions. Free Visual Delights Even in the pandemic, there are outdoor, free visual delights to share with your family. Remember that a lot of people decorate their homes (and businesses) with lights. So set everyone up with a cup of hot chocolate or a candycane and take a walk or drive around your neighborhood or someone else’s looking at all the Christmas lights and decorations. The light displays are completely free and can be a great way to have a fun holiday outing. Also, a number of towns do outdoor decorations as well. In Walnutport for instance, more than 30 local businesses have each decorated a tree with lights and ornaments in the park at the Borough Recreation Center at 215 Lincoln Avenue. It’s a beautiful display where the trees are along a curving walkway that allows you and your family to walk and admire the lights and decorations at your own pace. It’s especially pretty around dusk and after dark, with easy access parking. Make Your Own Decorations An absolutely low-cost way to entertain your kids and be creative together at the same time is to make your own Christmas decorations this year. One idea is to take the kids out to gather up some pine cones and string them together to make ornaments, adding holly berries to them to make them extra festive. Or have the kids cut out paper snowflakes to tape to the window or hang on the tree. Finding Gifts Not every gift has to be brand new. When you have a very small budget, get creative when it comes to gifts. Think of homemade gifts and also secondhand treasures. A homemade gift has so much more meaning than a store-bought. You put love, time, and thought into every gift you will give. One really fun idea for your young children is a “coupon book” full of fun activities and one-on-one time with Mom and Dad. Coupons can be included for things like this: • No chore day. DECEMBER 17, 2020 || townandcountrygazette.com

• Make cookies together. • Stay up 30 minutes past bedtime. • Special time with Mom. • Special time with Dad. • 30 minutes of extra screen-time. • Build a blanket fort. • Game night. • Choice of dinner. • Bear hug. • Park day. • Pajama day. Other fun gift ideas for younger children include a Cardboard Box Fort. Kids love using their imagination with a large cardboard box. Something else that’s easy and fun to make is a Noisemaker, made from a decorated toilet paper roll with rice inside. Simple DIY Christmas gifts for adults can include a knitted scarf or a bookmark. But most of all remember that family is the most important thing and should be especially cherished during this very special holiday.

Lighting Christmas Trees SOURCE: Wikipedia

The tradition of lighting Christmas trees is a longstanding one. The custom of lighting Christmas trees goes all the way back to when Christmas trees were first decorated with candles. For Christians, the light of the candles symbolized Christ being the light of the world. This custom was borrowed from pagan yule rituals that celebrated the return of the light of the sun as the days grew longer after

solstice. Evergreen trees symbolized the renewal and continuance of life in dark times. Lighted Trees Indoors The Christmas tree came indoors in upper-class homes in 18th-century Germany, where it was occasionally decorated with candles. At that time, candles were considered a comparatively expensive light source. The candles used on the inside trees were glued with melted wax to a tree branch or attached by pins. It wasn’t until about 1890 that candleholders were first used to hold the candles on the tree. Then between 1902 and 1914, small glass balls and lanterns started to be used to hold the candles. The first electric Christmas lights were introduced with electrification, beginning in the 1880s. Public Displays In the early 20th century the public display and illumination of Christmas trees with electric lights became very popular. By the mid-20th century, it became customary to also display strings of electric lights along streets and on buildings during the Christmas season. With that, circumstances were created where Christmas lighting and decorations were no longer exclusively attached to the Christmas tree itself.

Helping Neighbors and Community SOURCE: Various

This holiday season, the need for help is greater than ever. If you have a neighbor, perhaps older or living alone, reach out and see how they’re doing. If you have the ability to take them a holiday meal, that could mean a lot. Older people living alone often don’t feel the motivation to cook. Find out what they might need

and if you have the means, maybe you can drop off a surprise bag of nice prepared meals they can have on hand to heat in the microwave or in the oven. Overall, check in on people in your neighborhood in some way. Drop off some cookies in a bag on their doorknob. This particular winter, gestures of kindness will mean a lot. In the community, everything from donating clothes or blood, to helping a food bank or an animal shelter will make a difference. Also, local and national nonprofits are struggling to meet their clients’ needs. The coronavirus has continued to force layoffs and closures, as well as the cancellation of fundraising events. Search local and national nonprofits that you can help support to make a difference there. And remember your local restaurants that will need more support. Let’s make this winter less harsh that it might otherwise be.

COVID Vaccine Updates SOURCE: Various

At the time of this writing, Health and Human Services Secretary Alex Azar has said that the U.S. Food and Drug Administration will grant emergency use authorization to the COVID-19 vaccine developed by Pfizer and German partner BioNTech. Mass vaccinations are expected to get underway for hundreds of thousands of frontline health care workers and nursing home residents, a potential turning point in the country's bitter battle against the virus. Pharmaceutical company Moderna has also applied to the FDA to receive emergency use authorization for its coronavirus vaccine, which has been shown to be around 94% effective. This issue of the Gazette officially comes out on December 17. Vaccinations in the U.S. may have already started within the previous 1-3 days. Numbers and Definitions There are roughly 21 million health-care workers and 3 million long-term care facility residents in the United States. According to Dr. Nancy Messonnier, director of the CDC’s National Center for Immunization and Respiratory Diseases, most states and local jurisdictions expect it to take three weeks to vaccinate all of their health-care workers. Both Pfizer’s and Moderna’s vaccines require two doses about a month apart. Health-care workers are being defined as paid and unpaid people serving in health-care settings who have the potential for direct or indirect DECEMBER 17, 2020 || townandcountrygazette.com

exposure to patients or infectious materials. Long-term care facility residents are defined as adults who reside in facilities that provide a variety of services, including medical and personal care, to persons who are unable to live independently. Residents and staff in long-term care facilities account for 6% of Covid cases but 40% of deaths in the U.S., according to the CDC. Potentially, according to a government spokesperson, the entire U.S. population of 331 million could be vaccinated against COVID-19 by June, and there could be enough doses to immunize the rest of the nearly 8 billion people in the world by early to mid-2022. Side Effects The side effects from the Pfizer vaccine can lay people up for a day or so, company officials have said. That’s prompted officials to recommend that health-care facilities plan for workers to have time away from clinical care if they experience symptoms after getting vaccinated. About 10% to 15% of people report noticeable side effects from the vaccines. The people who’ve suffered from side effects have reported redness and pain at the injection site as well as fever, chills, muscle aches and headaches, although most people have no noticeable side effects. The U.S. government has pre-ordered 100 million doses from Moderna and Pfizer each. But Moderna says it is only capable of producing about 20 million doses by the end of the year. Pfizer will have about 50 million doses ready, but they will be split between the U.S. and other countries with which the company has purchase agreements. 43

Classic Christmas Movies SOURCE: Various

It’s the most wonderful time of the year - that time when you look at the weather outside and decide you are definitely staying in to watch some favorite holiday movies. We checked several “top holiday movie” lists and here are some of the classics – older and newer – that you might consider watching this holiday season. White Christmas (1954) White Christmas is one of the greats, thanks to some classic Hollywood magic. The film follows Bob (Bing Crosby) and Phil (Danny Kaye), two aspiring song-and-dance performers who hit it big after the war and later become romantically involved with a sister act (Rosemary Clooney and Vera-Ellen). White Christmas will charm you during the holidays whether it’s your first or hundredth time watching. Home Alone (1990) Home Alone is pure childhood Christmas nostalgia for many 90’s kids. The comedy follows young Kevin McAllister (Macaulay Culkin) as he discovers that he’s been left home alone after his family goes on vacation. His mother (Catherine O’Hara) must now journey home to get back to her son, who in the meantime must fend off comedic, menacing burglars Harry (Joe Pesci) and Marv (Daniel Stern). This is a modern Christmas classic that never gets old. The Muppet Christmas Carol (1992) The Muppets is one of the longest lasting pop culture franchises with good reason. Their movies and TV shows are funny, family friendly, and timeless. One of their most underrated movies is The Muppet Christmas Carol, an adaptation of Charles Dickens’ classic Christmas tale. Michael Caine’s Scrooge is one of the best ever committed to the silver screen, which is even more remarkable when you consider he’s acting opposite puppets. The movie is very heartwarming and wholesome. National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation (1989) From the makers of the National Lampoon’s Vacation comes this Christmas themed sequel that’s almost as popular as the original. Clark (Chevy Chase) and Ellen Griswold (Beverly D’Angelo) are back and have to face something even tougher than a family DECEMBER 17, 2020 || townandcountrygazette.com

vacation: holiday with their family. The running gags are fun, and the movie’s one F-bomb (spoken by Chase) is one for the ages. National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation is a subversive, funny classic. It's A Wonderful Life (1946) Warning: It’s A Wonderful Life is one of the best films ever made period, and should be watched in the proper way it was first shown, in its beautiful black and white cinematography – rather than the colorized version from the 1980s. The movie follows George Bailey’s (Jimmy Stewart) life and eventual suicidal contemplation on Christmas Eve thanks to an extraordinary bout of bad luck. It’s up to guardian angel Clarence to convince George that his life is worth living and prevent his suicide, in order to finally earn his wings. While the plot might not exactly scream Christmas and is actually a bit dark, It’s A Wonderful Life is ultimately an emotional, sweet affair that argues that we all matter, and every good thing that we do for others matters as well. The movie shines in its ending, which is one of the most heartwarming ever. Miracle on 34th Street (1955) The best Christmas movie of all time, Miracle on 34th Street, centers on a man named Kris Kringle who becomes a hit at Macy’s as a mall Santa. Problems arise however, when Kris indicates he thinks he’s in fact the real Santa Claus. It’s a story about belief that encourages imagination and wonder, especially towards children. Miracle on 34th Street is pure Christmas cheer.

Pet Safety Tips for the Holidays Source: Quakertown Veterinary Clinic

The holiday décor and food look and taste great, but they pose danger for your pets! Here are four safety tips courtesy of Quakertown Veterinary Clinic to keep in mind if you have dogs or cats at home over the holidays. 1. Skip the tinsel. This is especially true for cat parents. 2. Keep plants out of reach. Poinsettias, holly, mistletoe, and lilies can be harmful and sometimes even poisonous to pets. 3. Sharing is caring, but not when it's food. Keep that delicious holiday meal away from your pets. 4. Secure your tree. You don't want it falling on your pets. We hope you and yours (and your beautiful pets) have a safe and wonderful holiday season. 45

New Year’s Eve Ball Drop 2020 SOURCE: filmdaily.co

Each year, millions of eyes from all over the world have focused on the sparkling Waterford Crystal Times Square New Year’s Eve Ball. At 11:59 p.m. the Ball begins its descent as millions of voices unite to countdown the final seconds of the year, and celebrate the beginning of a new year full of hopes, challenges, changes and dreams. This year it will all be a little different.

The famed New Year’s Eve Ball will still drop, but for the first time in 114 years, there will be no crowd in Times Square to cheer it on. In the latest COVID19-generated blow to traditions, officials have announced major changes to the New Year’s Eve 2020 event. “One thing that will never change is the ticking of time and the arrival of a New Year at midnight on December 31st,” said Times Square Alliance president Tim Tompkins, in a news release about New Year’s Eve 2020. “But this year there will be significantly new and enhanced virtual, visual and digital offerings to complement whatever limited live entertainment or experiences take place in Times Square.” Socially Distanced Party Tompkins said that Times Square will be cordoned off from the general public by the NYPD on New Year’s Eve and any event taking place inside the tourist hub will be for “broadcast purposes only.” It’s yet to be decided what live events will take place. The news release states there will be“an extremely limited group of in-person honorees, socially distanced, who will reflect the themes, challenges and inspirations of New Year.” Fans of the New Year’s Eve 2020 event will have Continued on page 50

Ball Drop Continued from page 48

to tune in from home. History of the Ball Drop Revelers began celebrating New Year’s Eve in Times Square as early as 1904, but it was in 1907 that the New Year’s Eve Ball made its maiden descent from the flagpole atop One Times Square. Seven versions of the Ball have been designed to signal the New Year. The Ball has been lowered every year since 1907, with the exceptions of 1942 and 1943, when the ceremony was suspended due to the wartime “dimout” of lights in New York City. Nevertheless, the crowds still gathered in Times Square in those years and greeted the New Year with a minute of silence followed by the ringing of chimes from sound trucks parked at the base of the tower. Today, New Year’s Eve in Times Square is a bona fide international phenomenon. Each year, hundreds of thousands of people gather around the Tower and wait for hours in the cold for the famous Balllowering ceremony. The lowering of the Ball in Times Square has become the world’s symbolic welcome to the New Year, drawing a worldwide audience estimated at more than one billion people.
