The setting was warm and friendly for both children and adults, and many of the children were pleased to see their teacher from the LIbrary’s Story Hour Program. Miller) The Night before Christmas It was just the night before Christmas and completely throughout the land, The big-hearted Santa Claus was rightly well known; With deer hitched to his sled, everyone knew Who the generous, dear old Santa Claus is. The wind ‘piped’ through his long white beard – (Not once did he go to the barber, he always spared himself from that.) And the fat on his thick ‘paunch’ – we have already observed, That shook and wobbled whenever he laughed. And he laughed in his sled, with the whip in his hand, Just on the night before Christmas, and went Continued on page 12

throughout the land. The house was completely still, one did not hear a sound, Because Santa Claus does not come where he is disturbed. The children always went early to bed in that time, And willingly prayed and slept on it soundly; The big ones and the little ones all at once

Became very good and well-behaved and everything was okay, For mommy said that Santa does not stop At houses that have naughty children in them. That evening everyone took off their stockings And hung them at the chimney and went up to bed; Sam and Bill and Jack and Jake Took off their stockings and hung them and next was Becky, Betsy and Sally, Maggie and Liz, A complete row of stocking samples – yes, indeed! Mike and Ike and Joe and Jim, And Moses and Aaron, those were twins. When Santa Claus came, he said at once,“Whew! By golly! I don’t know now what to do, I gladly want to fill them but, whew! I am afraid The stockings were not in the wash for a long time. If I put candy in them, good tasting and sweet, The chocolate and sugar will get the flavor of feet.” So he looked out at that row and stroked his beard, And examined the stockings, big and small, all kinds. “Well the people here are poor, and money is always tight, But a little group of such children makes riches in the heart.” But he said to himself, “But love is not money, And it does not go into the little hands like cash in this world.” Having said that, he turned around and went up and right out the chimney,

And came with a mighty bundle into the house. One could almost think that it is a peddler that came, And not old Santa Claus who jumped into the chimney. Having opened his bag, he [laid out] for everyone a pair Of the best store bought wool stockings [right there] on the floor, Then he put candy and peanuts in them For Sam and Bill and Jack and Jake. He went right out the row to Betsy’s stocking And stopped abruptly there; He said, “My goodness! This isn’t yet a stocking, it looks like a sack.” And he put the remainder of his pack into it. And because Betsy was so ‘big-footed’ He carried in another fresh bundle for Liz And Becky and Sally, Maggie and Jim They also got chestnuts with fish worms (hopefully – candy) in them, And candy horses and doll babies with hair, And cattle that was once in Noah’s Ark (toys, hopefully?); Mike and Ike and Joe got a drum,

Fish nets for shad, and books with pictures in them. The last were the twins, but the bundle was empty, If the twins got nothing, they will be as angry as a bear; So old St. Nick thought right hard about that – What could he still give to the twins as a gift? He went out for it right away and soon he came And tied a pair of milk-goats by the lane.

The Neffs National Bank donates to Toys for Tots of the Lehigh Valley submitted by Amanda Clauser

The Neffs National Bank has donated 10 boxes and three bicycles to the local Toys for Tots Allentown. The collection campaign ran from Monday, November 4 through Friday, December 6 in the bank’s lobby during regular business hours. Items collected include stuffed animals, dolls, monster trucks, toy cars, board games and books. Donations were received as a collective effort by the bank employees, customers, local businesses and the community. “We have been doing this for the past 6 years and the support by the community has been overwhelming and we can't thank them enough,” said Kevin Schmidt, President/ CEO of The Neffs National Bank. “We have been told that we are one of the largest collection sites in the Lehigh Valley and we look forward to assisting in this event each year.” The Neffs National Bank will have other community events coming up in the new year, and these events will be listed on the bank’s website, www.neffsnatl.com. When retrieving the donations on Monday, December 9, Toys for Tots volunteer Marty reflected on the reasons why he has been collecting for over thirty years: “When your family is opening presents on Christmas Day, remember that a child somewhere in the Lehigh Valley is opening up a toy on Christmas because of your donation at Neffs Bank.” All donations and funds donated in the Lehigh Valley stay in the Lehigh Valley. According to the Toys for Tots Allentown website, 85,183 toys were distributed in 2018 and over 30,000 children were supported in the community’s efforts. new books and eBooks to children living in lowincome communities in 33 U.S. states and territories. “Pennsylvania Public Television stations understand the magic of characters like Daniel Tiger, Big Bird and Curious George. We also understand the magic that happens for a child when they read with someone who cares for them,” said Ron Hetrick, President & CEO of WITF, one of the seven stations a part of Pennsylvania Public Television. “In an effort to help our communities live inspired, we are thrilled to work with our partners at the United Way and First Book to help make magic of reading happen for more children in Pennsylvania.” “First Book is helping public media partners and United Ways to resource proven local strategies which get free books into the hands of children of all ages from low-income communities across the state. Reading is the foundation for all learning, and books are the tool to develop those skills. We hope the books also encourage development of positive relationships with adults who will read First Book selections to young children, or help older children choose the next story they would like to read. Together we are changing Pennsylvania communities,” said Kristen Rotz, President of United Way of Pennsylvania. Awardees are using the funding to select books and eBooks from the First Book Marketplace (www. fbmarketplace.com), First Book’s award-winning eCommerce platform, that best meet the needs of the children they serve. First Book estimates the total value of the books distributed will be more than $12 million. “We know that access to books and eBooks makes a significant difference in a child’s future success,” said Kyle Zimmer, First Book president, CEO, and cofounder.“Children do not thrive in deeply underresourced environments and too many of the schools and programs have far too little. This deprivation has long-term consequences for the children, their families, their communities and our nation. This could not be more urgent. With the OMG Books Awards, First Book and Pennsylvania Public Television in collaboration with the United Way of Pennsylvania are investing not only in the future of the kids we’re reaching, but in the overall wellbeing of our nation.” Access to adequate resources is one of the greatest contributors to educational success in the United States. of books in the home improves educational outcomes, yet low-income communities across the U.S. are plagued by vast ‘book deserts’—with one community having only a single book per as many as 830 children.2 Additionally, members of the First Book Network, who exclusively serve kids in need, have indicated that without First Book, the children they serve would have access to very few books, if any at all. 3 (References below). Eligible educators, librarians, providers, and others serving children in need can sign up to receive resources from First Book outside of OMG Books Awards at firstbook.org/join. For more information, please visit firstbook.org or follow the latest news on Facebook and Twitter. About Pennsylvania Public Television (PPT) Pennsylvania Public Television consists of seven public television stations which bring PBS and educational events to Pennsylvania. 9 Short Term Financial Goals for the New Year By Miriam Caldwell

The new year is a great time to set financial goals. However, it is not uncommon to burn out and revert to old habits. These goals are designed to be reached quickly and still help you to positively change your finances. You should be able to complete these goals within the first month. Save $1,000 Right Away One of the first steps of taking control of your personal finances is to have money set aside for emergencies. A good starting amount is $1,000.You may be surprised at how quickly you can save that money. Try strategies that include saving bonuses or a tax return. You can cut back on fun money for the month to put toward the amount, sell some items online or work as a temp for after holiday sales. The money should add up quickly and then you have an emergency fund in place. Create a Monthly Budget In reality, setting up your budget really should not take up much time. Even if you do not end up sticking to it each month, learning how much you make, what you spend and how the two compare can help you start making better financial decisions each week. A budget is your spending plan for the month, but it can also help you identify areas where you need to focus, and just creating one can help you bring an awareness to your finances that you did not have before. Catch Up on Late Payments Late payments can be expensive. Late fees can add up quickly and it can be difficult to catch up and get ahead when you have fallen behind. Make Continued on page 27

Dream Maker Awards Four volunteers from the Annual Lehigh Township Benefit Festival & Car Show held at Becky’s DriveIn received the Dream Maker Awards in November at the Dream Come True telethon held at Penn’s Peak. Michael Rehrig, Ramona Heelan, and Todd Latshaw are employees at Becky’s and have volunteered for many years preparing weeks before the event and the day of the benefit. Thomas Oncheck (Duncan the Dog) has been putting smiles on the spectators faces who attend the benefit at Becky’s for many years by strolling the grounds and greeting everyone during the day of the event. Duncan the Dog is a permanent fixture at the annual benefit and look forward seeing him each year. With everyone’s help it was possible to hold the worthy benefit for chronically, terminally, and seriously ill children. This year’s benefit raised $11,040.00 for Dream Come True of the Blue Ridge Chapter.

it a goal to catch up now, and you will be better off in the future. You can find extra money by working an extra job or selling some things. You may also be able to contact the companies and see if they will set up a payment plan for you to get caught up over a few months, which may make the process more manageable. If you are making good faith payments the companies are less likely to report you to collections. Pay Off One Credit Card or Medical Bills It can seem overwhelming to think about paying off all of your debt. This usually takes months or years. Instead just choose one thing to pay off quickly. Look at your smallest monthly payments and see what you can do to pay at least one off this month. If you have a store credit card with a low balance, or you owe monthly payments to a hospital, you may be able to clear those up fairly easily. You can take that money and apply it toward building an emergency fund or to other debt, but you will have improved your situation just by clearing out a few small debts. Cut Costs on Three Bills Try finding ways to reduce the amount you pay each month on at least three bills. An easy place to start is with your cable bill. Consider cutting the cord and moving to a service that you can stream online. There are options that cost a significant amount less than cable or satellite and most do not have monthly contract options. Another bill that you may consider changing is cell phone plan providers. Shop around for the best plans and deals. If you are currently locked into a contract, there may be a deal where the new company will buy out your contact. Find ways to cut usage on your electricity or water bill as a way to save money. Meet With a Financial Planner Setting up a meeting with a financial planner should not take too long. Once you have the meeting, you should have a better idea of what type of goals you need to set and strategies to help you start investing. It can be helpful to meet with your financial planner or adviser once a year to check on your portfolio and to see if you need to change your financial plan as your life goals change and evolve. Open an IRA or Start Contributing to Your 401(k) One easy goal is to start saving for retirement if you have not already. Contact your human resources representative to learn what you need to do to start contributing to your 401(k). Start by contributing up to your employer’s match and then you can work DECEMBER 19, 2019 || townandcountrygazette.com

on increasing it each year. If you do not qualify for a retirement plan, consider opening up an IRA and start saving for retirement there. Go on a Spending Fast A spending fast is when you stop spending money except for essentials like grocery and gas for a set period of time. A spending fast can be really helpful if you are trying to break old shopping habits or you want to raise money for an emergency fund quickly. Simply choose how long you want to go on the fast for, usually at least one month, and then stop spending. You can get creative and find free activities to do or spend time at home. Many people choose February as the month to complete spending fast since it is a bit shorter, but it can be done at any time. Complete an Insurance Check-Up One important thing to do each year is an insurance check-up. The first part of this makes sure you have adequate insurance coverage. Your situation may have changed over the last year, and so your insurance needs may have changed too. If you got married or had a baby, you should look into adding life insurance. Car and home insurance tend to go up each year even if you do not have any claims. You may be able to find better rates by switching companies. Take the time to shop around and see if you can save money this year.

Understanding & Coping with the Christmas Blues By Darlene Lancer, JD, MFT

The stress of the holidays triggers sadness and depression for many people. This time of year is especially difficult because there’s an expectation of feeling merry and generous. People compare their emotions to what they assume others are experiencing or what they’re supposed to feel. Then they think that they alone fall short. They judge themselves and feel like an outsider.

643 Main Street Slatington Pa 18080 610-224-9311 www.nulton.com

There’re a host of things that add to stress and difficult emotions during the holidays. • Finances. Not enough money or the fear of not having enough to buy gifts leads to sadness and guilt. The stress of financial hardship during this economic downturn is often compounded by shame. When you can’t afford to celebrate, it can feel devastating. • Stress. For example, there is the stress of shopping and planning family dinners when you’re already overworked and tired. • Loneliness. A whopping 43 percent of Americans are single, and 27 percent of Americans live alone. When others are with their families, it can be very painful for those who are alone. Seventeen percent of singles are over 65, when health, age, and mobility can make it more difficult to enjoy yourself. • Grief. Missing a deceased loved one. Seniors have more reasons to grieve. • Estrangement. When you’re not speaking to a relative, family get-togethers can usher in feelings

of sadness, guilt, resentment, or inner conflict about whether to communicate. • Divorce. If you’re newly divorced, the holidays may remind you of happier times and accentuate your grief. It’s especially difficult for adult children of divorce who have to balance seeing two sets of parents. The stress is multiplied for married children who have three or even four sets of parents to visit. • Pleasing. Trying to please all of your relatives – deciding what to get, whom to see, and what to do – can make you feel guilty, which leads to depression. • SAD. Many people experience the blues during gloomy weather due to decreased sunlight, called Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD). Much of the planning, shopping, and cooking is done by women, so they carry the greater burden in preparing for family gatherings. Women are at greater risk for depression than men. They’re twice as likely to experience depression. After heart disease, depression is the most debilitating illness for women, while it’s tenth for men. Some measures you can take to cope with the holiday blues include: • Make plans in advance, so you know how and with whom your holidays will be spent. Uncertainty and putting off decision-making add enormous stress. • Shop early and allow time to wrap and mail packages to avoid the shopping crunch. • Ask for help from your family and children. Women tend to think they have to do everything, when a team effort can be more fun. • Don’t buy things you can’t afford. Shame prevents people from being open about gift giving when they can’t afford it. Instead of struggling to buy a gift, let your loved ones know how much you

care and would like to, but can’t afford it. That intimate moment will relieve your stress and nourish you both. • Don’t allow perfectionism to wear you down. Remember it’s being together and goodwill that matters. • Make time to rest and rejuvenate even amidst the pressure of getting things done. This will give you more energy. • Spend time alone to reflect and grieve, if necessary. Pushing down feelings leads to depression. Let yourself feel. Then do something nice for yourself and socialize. • Don’t isolate. Reach out to others who also may be lonely. If you don’t have someone to be with, volunteer to help those in need. It can be very uplifting and gratifying. The signs of depression are feelings of sadness, worthlessness or guilt, crying, loss of interest in usual activities, fatigue, difficulty concentrating, irritability, social withdrawal, and changes in sleep, weight, or appetite. If these symptoms are severe or continue for a few weeks, more than the holidays may be the cause. Seek professional help.

Pet Holiday Hazards: What Not to Feed Dogs Holiday Foods That Are Bad For Dogs Contributed by Dr. Alison Birken, owner and DVM of Victoria Park Animal Hospital

Daily pet emergencies at the hospital nearly double during the holidays, with the consumption of toxic foods for dogs being one of the leading causes. While there are potentially harmful holiday decorations, hazardous holiday plants and Christmas trees, there is also a hefty list of what not to feed dogs. So to ensure more time celebrating, and less time at the veterinary hospital, check out these toxic foods for dogs. What Not to Feed Dogs Over the Holidays • Rich and Fatty Foods. Rich and fatty foods can cause problems ranging from stomach upset to more serious illnesses such as pancreatitis, which causes pain, vomiting and dehydration. • Alcohol. Alcohol can cause intoxication in our pets, and many dogs are attracted to the sweet taste and smell. • Candy Canes, Gingerbread Cookies, Popcorn, Raisins and Cranberry Garlands. Candy canes, gingerbread cookies, popcorn, raisins and cranberry garlands can also be enticing to your pet, but when ingested, can cause upset stomach or a more serious

intestinal obstruction. • Chocolate, Coffee and Tea. Chocolate, coffee and tea all contain dangerous components called xanthines, which cause nervous system or urinary system damage and heart muscle stimulation. Problems from ingestion range from diarrhea to seizures and death. Unsweetened baking chocolate and dark chocolate are the most toxic to our pets. Continued on page 38

• Bones From Fish, Meat or Poultry. Bones from fish, meat or poultry—even small bones—can splinter and cause tearing throughout the intestinal tract, requiring surgery. • Tobacco. Tobacco products can be fatal to pets if ingested. Signs of poisoning develop within 15-45 minutes and include over-excitement, salivation, vomiting and diarrhea. Pets may develop seizures, collapse and even die from cardiac arrest. Keep all tobacco products out of reach and make sure to empty all ashtrays regularly. • Uncooked Yeast Dough. Uncooked yeast dough can expand and produce gas in the digestive system, causing pain and possible rupture of the stomach or intestines. • Grapes, Raisins, Macadamia Nuts and Xylitol. Grapes, raisins, macadamia nuts and xylitol (an artificial sweetener) are toxic for pets. By being aware of dangerous foods for dogs, you can better avoid potential pet emergencies. And with all the festivities, do not forget to relax and spend some quality time with your pet. Your dog will truly think that is the best gift of all!
