5 Secrets for a New Year’s Resolution that Lasts By Homaira Kabir

It’s that time of the year again. Amidst the shopping and the festivities, there is a New Year’s resolution gaining resolve somewhere in the back of your mind. “I really need to…”ends with all kinds of goals from weight loss and fitness to organization and improving finances. In the meantime, you’re likely splurging on all of the above, awaiting the magical hour to undergo your metamorphosis. It’s our human need for novelty that makes us believe that a new year will be just the catalyst we need for lasting transformation. Sadly, that’s often not the case. Once the novelty wears off—in as little as a week into January—our motivation begins to dwindle bit by bit. A quarter of us can’t stick with our resolutions for seven measly days, while almost half of us have given up by the end of the month. And yet, 20% of us do persist—not just past the initial week or the first month, but well into the third year of follow-up. What do these people do differently? And what can we learn from them so that this NewYear’s resolution is one that lasts? Continued on page 4

5 New Year’s Secrets Continued from page 3

Know Thyself Research on Self-Determination Theory shows that feeling competent in achieving our goals is one of the biggest predictors of success. The most successful people set goals that are tied to their strengths and within their boundaries of competence. This means that although goals need to be challenging, they should not be so far beyond our competence that the mere anxiety of achieving them scares us off. Losing 50 pounds in 4 months is not going to get you far—other than leading to feelings of failure. Losing 10 pounds and keeping it off all year is a far more achievable goal that will make you feel good about yourself and build your competence towards more challenging goals. Own Your Goal The meaning we attribute to our goals is one of the key criteria that will keep us going well after the initial euphoria wears off. Such goals are called intrinsic goals—ones that are driven by our inherent human need for growth, connection or for making a difference in some way. Sadly, our goals are often the result of familial or societal expectations, even though we’re often unaware of it. This doesn’t

necessarily mean that you let go of the goal of improving your finances. Just remember to connect it to a deeper desire—to provide a better life for your family or to move towards your professional vision. Break It Down New Year’s resolutions are rarely small tweaks in our lifestyle that result in subtle but long-term changes. They are more like the Herculean projects that are supposed to propel us into upward spirals of growth. However good our intentions, approaching something this enormous can be daunting unless we’re able to work on it in small bites that we can handle. Organizing your garage is great, but unless you can break it down into 2-hour long weekly sessions of clearing the shelves, getting rid of all the junk, buying organization containers etc., you will only keep piling it up with additional stuff you don’t need. Breaking down tasks creates a self-propelling momentum as we see ourselves moving steadily towards our goals. Visualize the Obstacles When we come up against challenges, many of us lose the resolve to continue. The reason is that we have spent much of our time visualizing the success of our goals and barely any time thinking Continued on page 6

about the obstacles on the way. Psychology professor Gabriele Oettingen of New York University and author of Rethinking Positive Thinking: Inside the New Science of Motivation, says that such a pie-inthe-sky approach is often disconnected with reality and doesn’t equip us to handle challenges when they arise. Having a clear If/then plan—as in “If I’m at a party, then I’ll choose fruit at the dessert table” can go a long way in priming the unconscious mind towards helpful behaviors.

Focus on the Feeling It’s all well and good (and very important) to connect our goals with something meaningful in the long-term. But we also have a limbic brain that can’t deal with the abstract and looks for instant gratification. When the rewards of our goals seem too far in the future, many of us can lose the motivation to stay the course. Researcher Michelle Segar, author of No Sweat, says that we need to make our meaning immediate so that we can also feel good in the moment. Rewarding ourselves is a great way of doing so. The good news is that you don’t have to head to the mall every time you take a step in the direction of your goals. Something as simple as scheduling the behavior in your planner and then ticking it off provides your brain with about the same dopamine kick as an expensive purchase, with the additional benefit of making the behavior habitual. If you’re tired of failed New Year’s resolutions of years past, take heart. Research shows that people who actually make resolutions are more likely to commit to their changes than those who just try and change. With the right approach to your goals and the journey towards them, you can rest assured that you won’t be making the same New Year’s resolution this time next year!

onions and bell peppers. Let brown for 1 to 2 minutes before stirring, then let brown for another 1 to 2 minutes before stirring again. Add beef back to pan. Add ketchup, Worcestershire sauce, salt and pepper into the pan and stir. Take it off the heat and scoop into the cooked pasta shells. Top each shell with cubes of cheese (use half of the cheese for this). Using the same pan, add the beef broth, milk and cornstarch and whisk before turning the heat back on. Add in the rest of the cheddar cheese a little at a time while whisking for 3 to 5 minutes or until thickened. Pour about half the sauce around the shells. Bake in the oven for 10 minutes to melt the cheese. Serve with the remaining sauce. I hate to say this being a life-long resident of PA, but I am not a big cheesesteak fan. However, these stuffed shells were fantastic and a nice reprieve from the daily humdrum of chicken. I stayed pretty true to the recipe but I definitely didn’t need 24 shells, you could probably get away with a little less. I also poured half of the cheese sauce around the shells but poured the other half on top of the shells before putting into the oven. It was fun to try a different type of stuffed shell besides the classic; I think next I am going to try taco stuffed shells. Good luck and enjoy!

Christmas Traditions by David Johnson

Christmas Tree The practice of tree worship has been found in many ancient cultures. Often, trees were brought indoors and decorated to ensure a good crop for the coming year. Trees have also been linked to divinity. Egyptians associated a palm tree with the god Baal-Tamar, while the Greeks and Romans believed that the mother of Adonis was changed into a fir tree. Adonis was one of her branches brought to life. The modern Christmas tree was likely born in the 8th century, when St. Boniface was converting the Germanic tribes. The tribes worshipped oak trees, decorating them for the winter solstice. St. Boniface cut down an enormous oak tree, that was central to the worship of a particular tribe, but a fir tree grew in its place. The evergreen was offered as a symbol of Christianity, which the newly converted Germans began decorating for Christmas. Prince Albert, who was German, introduced the Christmas tree to England after his marriage to Queen Victoria in 1840. German immigrants to Pennsylvania brought Christmas trees to America.

Mistletoe The Druids believed mistletoe fell from heaven and grew onto a tree that sprang from Earth. Mistletoe thus represented the joining of heaven and earth, and God's reconciliation with mankind. A kiss under mistletoe symbolized acceptance and reconciliation. Santa Claus Patron saint of children and sailors, Saint Nicholas was a 4th-century bishop from Asia Minor. He was famous for giving gifts to children. His feast day, December 6, became a children's holiday in Holland, where he is known as Sint Nikolaas. English colonists in New York (previously the Dutch colony of New Amsterdam) called him “Santa Claus” because they couldn't pronounce the Dutch name. The English began celebrating the feast day on Christmas. Kriss Kringle, another name for Santa Claus, developed in Germany around 1600. German Protestants recognized December 25, the birth of the Christ child, Christkindl, as the time to give gifts. “Christkindl” evolved into “Kriss Kringle.” In the Netherlands and Germany, the Santa Claus figure often rode through the sky on a horse to deliver presents to children. He often wore a bishop's robes and was sometimes accompanied

by Black Peter, an elf who whipped naughty children. In addition to the tradition of Saint Nicholas, the three Wise Men gave gifts to the baby Jesus, starting the Christmas gift tradition. Holly One of the most popular Christmastime accoutrements, holly has sharp edges, symbolic of the crown of thorns worn by Jesus at his crucifixion. The red berries represent blood. Yule Log The word yule meant “infant” in the language of the Chaldeans, who lived in the Middle East. The Germanic tribes of Northern Europe, including the Anglo Saxons, celebrated “Yule-day” or “Child's Day.” The custom of the Yule log has been noted in France and Italy as far back as the 1200s. It later

spread throughout Europe. On Christmas Eve an enormous log would be cut and placed in the hearth. The log would be sprinkled with salt, oil, and mulled wine, and prayers said to protect the house from the Devil and lightning. In some regions, the daughters of the family lit the log with splinters of the previous year's log. In other regions, the lady of the house had the honor of lighting the log. As iron stoves replaced giant hearths in the 1800s, Yule logs became decorative, often being used as Christmas centerpieces and decorated with evergreens and candles. Cooks began creating pastry Yule logs, rolled cakes covered in chocolate Continued on page 18

or coffee and decorated with sugared holly and roses. Candy Canes Some scholars believe a confectioner developed candy canes to represent Jesus. The shape of the "J" was for Jesus, or the shepherd's staff. The white color symbolized purity, while the red stripes indicated blood. Peppermint is similar to hyssop, the Middle Eastern mint mentioned in the Bible. Christmas Cards The custom of sending Christmas cards started

in Victorian England. Earlier, some adults had written Christmas letters. But letters took time to write; and people wanting to share season's greetings with many others had a daunting task. In 1843, British businessman Sir Henry Cole asked artist John Calcott Horsley to print some Christmas cards. One thousand cards were printed in black and white and then colored by hand. The cards, which depicted a happy family raising a toast to the recipient, were criticized for promoting drunkenness. In 1851 Richard Pease, a variety store owner, commissioned the first printed Christmas card in the U.S. London printers Charles Goodall & Sons became the first to mass-produce Christmas cards. In 1862 they created cards saying “A Merry Christmas. Later, they designed cards with various designs, including robins, holly, mangers, snowmen, and even Little Red Riding Hood.

Local Girl Scouts have been happily participating in seasonal community events. All troops made uniquely interpreted ornaments for the Girl Scout tree, "Make New Friends but Keep the Old...One is Silver and the other is Gold" at the Walnutport Tree Lighting. The girls also spread some holiday cheer as they sang Christmas carols with residents of George Dillard Manor in Slatington.

Ways To Cope With Last Minute Christmas Stress Christmas is approaching fast, but if you’re a working mum you’re probably at work right up until the big day. It feels very “un-festive” working so close to Christmas and doesn’t really give you much opportunity to get everything sorted before the big day arrives. Hopefully my list of ways to cope with last-minute Christmas stress will help… Buy Batteries A small suggestion but if you forget the batteries your Christmas morning is going to be hell! I went to the pound shop in my lunch break the other day and stocked up with enough to hopefully last until after Boxing Day. Build big toys You definitely don’t want to waste time or paper wrapping big toys like kitchens or dolls houses, and you definitely want to avoid having to build them on Christmas morning when you have a million other things to do. A late night on Christmas Eve is worth reducing the stress on Christmas morning.

Get wrapping This is definitely a note to self! I always seem to spend Christmas Eve night wrapping presents, so I’m really trying to spend an hour or two each evening getting through them this time. As well as saving last minute panic it also means Christmas Eve can be spent on more important things like films, wine and chocolate! Prepare dinner the night before This is actually a tip from my husband as I have never cooked Christmas dinner myself! He always prepares the veg and the turkey the night before so that on Christmas day is just needs going in the oven. Also means that half of the washing up is done the night before. Lay the table in advance I lay the table the day before so that it’s all done and looking lovely and you can make sure you’ve got everything. Last year I actually realised on Christmas Eve afternoon that we were 1 fork short, god knows how but I’m glad we didn’t realise on Christmas morning!

Wishing you a Merry Christmas and A Happy New Year from the Schisler Family and the Staff of the Schisler Funeral Homes

Merry Christmas

Charge your camera I’m planning on using my ‘proper’ camera to take photos this Christmas and I still need to remember to charge the battery. Christmas is such a special time with kids you don’t want to miss out on taking a ridiculous number of photos. Buy a few extra boxes of chocolates/bottles of wine It’s always a good idea to have a little stockpile of extra gifts just in case you have an unexpected visit from a neighbour or long lost family member. And if not, you’ve got a good supply of wine and chocolate for yourself. Set the Christmas TV films to record Come the afternoon the kids are tired and getting annoying, and you’re shattered so having a few Christmas programmes recorded from earlier in the day might be a good idea to keep them entertained for a bit. If after all that you’re still feeling stressed, check out this great post full of practical tips for managing holiday stress. Good luck for the big day, hope you and your families have a great Christmas!

world. Everybody would feel safe [sailing] in me since my hull is so large and strong. Finally, the third tree said, “I will grow up to be the tallest and straightest tree in the woods. The people should see me on the summit of the ridge and look up at my branches and think of heaven and God, and how close I am reaching up to them. I will be the grandest tree of all time, so that the people will always remember me.” After a few years of praying that their dreams would come true, a group of woodsmen came to the trees. When one of them came to the first tree he said, “This looks like a healthy tree. I think that I could sell the wood to a carpenter.” And he began to cut the tree down. The first tree was happy, since he knew that the carpenter would make him into a treasure chest once one day. At the second tree a woodsman said, “This looks like a strong tree. I should be able to sell him to a shipyard.” The second tree was also happy, since he knew that he was on the way to become a mighty ship. When the woodsmen came to the third tree, he was terrified that they would cut him down before his dream come true. One of the woodsmen said,“I don’t need anything particular from my tree,” and he also cut it down. Now when the first tree came to the carpenter, they made him into a food trough for the animals. Then it was placed in a barn and filled with hay. That is not what the tree prayed for. The second tree was cut up and made into a fishing boat. His dream of becoming a mighty ship bearing a king and queen, quickly came to an end. In the end the third tree was also cut up into large pieces and all left in the dark. Year after year went by and the trees forgot their dreams. Then finally one day, a man and his wife came to that barn. There the woman bore a child and they

laid that child on the hay in that food trough, that was made from the first tree. The man wished that he had a crib, but the food trough was good enough. That tree felt the significance of this thing, that the food trough would hold the greatest and best treasure of all time. Years later a group of men went in a fishing boat that was made from the second tree. One certain man was tired and then went to sleep. When they were out on the water, a big storm came up, and that tree thought that he may not be strong enough to keep the men in the ship safe. The men in the ship awakened the Man and as he stood up he said, “Peace!” and the storm, just like that, subsided. At that time the tree knew he was carrying the King of Kings in his ship. Yet after the longest time somebody came also to get the third tree. It was just cut up a little and then dragged through the street, while the people mocked the Man terribly who was dragging it. When they stopped, they nailed the Man to the tree and lifted him up in the air to die at the summit of the hill. When Sunday came, that tree understood that he was strong enough to stand on that hill and to be as near to God as it was possible, since Jesus was crucified on him. The moral from this story is if things do not always suit you, you can always know that God has a plan for you. If you put your trust in Him, he will give you the grandest gifts. Every one of the three trees had what they wanted to have, gotten – just not in the way that they themselves pictured it.

TurfMutt’s Winter-Wise Weather Tips for Pets Lucky the TurfMutt is a former street dog who knows all too well how uncomfortable it is to spend cold days and nights outside. But Lucky was rescued by Kris Kiser, President and CEO of the Outdoor Power Equipment Institute (OPEI). Now, Lucky has a warm home, a cozy bed, and an important mission – to teach kids and their families about the importance of our living landscapes and being an “outsider.” “Like most dogs, Lucky is an ‘outsider’ and he loves to romp in the snow, but one of our rules is that if it’s too cold for us to be outside, it’s too cold for him, too,” says Kiser. “As guardians of our pets, it’s important that we keep their safety in mind during all kinds of weather.” TurfMutt’s Winter-Wise Weather Tips for Pets Manage outdoor activities. The safest, most comfortable place for your pets is where you are. When temperatures dip below freezing or during severe weather, it’s imperative you keep pets indoors with you and make trips outside shorter. Offer a warm place for your pet to rest inside. A pet bed works perfectly, just make sure it stays clean and dry. Don’t cut your dog’s fur in the wintertime. Your

pet’s winter coat is a natural barrier from the harsh, cold elements. Consider a canine coat. Dogs with lots of fur probably don’t need an extra layer to go on walks in the winter. But smaller dogs and those with shorter coats may be more comfortable in a dog sweater or jacket. Check for frostbite. After bathroom breaks and walks, check your pet’s ears, paws and tail for any sign of frostbite or ice and snow build up in the paw pads. Wipe down after walks. Keep a dry, clean towel handy to wipe down your pet’s legs, belly and paws after each outdoor excursion. Ice-melt chemicals can irritate their skin and cause serious illness if ingested. Be careful with chemicals. Antifreeze smells and tastes sweet to pets, but it’s toxic to them. Quickly clean up any spills, and consider using a brand made from non-toxic propylene glycol instead. Keep your pet hydrated. Ensure your pet has plenty of fresh, clean water to drink. Winter air is dry! Clear a path. Use a snowthrower to make quick work of snow removal and create a path to your

5 Signs A Restricted Airway May Be Affecting Your Child's Health

GOOD

What is this?

For most people, breathing is automatic – the air goes in, the air goes out, and we don’t even think about it. But for those who have airway problems, it is never that simple – especially for children. “Children who suffer from air-passage problems never get enough oxygen to the brain, which causes them to never get enough sleep,” says Dr. Stuart Frost, an orthodontist and author of The Artist Orthodontist: Creating An Artistic Smile is More Than Just Straightening Teeth (www.drstuartfrost. com). “They typically do poorly in school and seem inattentive and lethargic.” Sleep apnea occurs when the airway becomes blocked during sleep, causing a pause in breathing. Those pauses in breathing, known as apneic events, often lead to a diagnosis of obstructive sleep apnea, Dr. Frost says. He says signs a child may be impacted by airway blockage include: Snoring. Snoring is caused by the vibrations of excess tissue blocking the airway. When children Continued on page 44

snore, orthodontists look for a blockage of their airway, from the tip of the nose down to the throat. Mouth breathing. When there is no room for the tongue to reach the roof of the mouth (the palate), it can rest in the back of the throat and block the airway. Also, when a child’s tonsils and adenoids are enlarged, they can reduce the size of the airway at the back of the throat.“Either situation can make it too hard for children to get enough air when breathing through their nose,” Dr. Frost says, “causing them to open their mouth and jut their lower jaw forward during sleep.” Clenching or grinding teeth. “If children who are 7 or 8 have baby teeth that are worn from grinding, we know it’s because they’re not getting enough air,” Dr. Frost says. During sleep – and sometimes even when they are awake – their lower jaw is constantly repositioning either side to side or forward to back to open their airway so they can breathe, he says. An expander appliance can widen the nasal passages to help the child take in more air when breathing through the nose. Diagnosed with Attention Deficit Disorder (ADD). as ADD may actually just have breathing problems during sleep Dr. Frost says.“ If a child is continually not getting enough oxygen during sleep, the brain will eventually kick in a hyper-alert state to stay alive,” he says. “A child whose brain is hyper-alert tends to bounce off the walls.” Bedwetting: A brain that is starving for oxygen can’t wake a child when the urge to go to the bathroom strikes during sleep. The child will sleep right through any warning sign the brain sends. Depending on what’s found during an examination, the solutions for a restricted airway could include braces with an expander appliance, along with surgical removal of adenoids or tonsils. “When sleep apnea is not addressed in childhood,

over time it can lead to health issues in adulthood,” Dr. Frost says.“By taking care of it when the person is younger, it can save years of restless nights and half-awake days.” About Dr. Stuart Frost Dr. Stuart Frost, author of The Artist Orthodontist: Creating An Artistic Smile is More Than Just Straightening Teeth (www.drstuartfrost.com), is an orthodontist and sought-after speaker who has given seminars, lectures, and speeches throughout the world to dentists. He graduated from the University of the Pacific School of Dentistry and has continued his education at the University of Rochester.
