From the Publisher’s Desk
Joe Korba
I trust everyone had a very happy and fun Thanksgiving holiday with family and friends. Maybe you even scored some good deals on Black Friday and Small Business Saturday. Regardless, now we are going to look forward to Christmas and the coming of the New Year with optimism and hope. (I mainly just hope I don’t need to gas up the snow blower for at least a few more weeks!) When most of you receive this issue of the Gazette, I will be basking in the Florida sun and enjoying the Disney World Christmas ambiance—getting into the spirit, as they say. As always, I hope you all enjoy this edition.

Meet The Staff
We’ve had some record-breaking winters over the past few years. Putting aside the shoveling and the salting and the driving, what’s a memorable (and positive) experience that you’ve had in the snow? Joe Korba, Associate Publisher
When I was living in campus housing at Penn College, we had a giant snow storm. Of course, with classes cancelled, everyone decided to party and the party eventually evolved into the biggest snowball fight I have ever witnessed—literally hundreds of people. The campus police even came to pelt some kids with snowballs. It was pretty epic.
Danielle Tepper, Editor
One of the best memories I have as a kid is the blizzard of ’96. I was eight. We were completely snowed in by approximately two feet of snow at my house in NJ and my dad spent the day building me a massive igloo and a slide that led from our deck stairs all the way across the backyard. (Thanks, Dad!)
Christine Stroh, Account Executive
Last year, Neil Diamond performed at the PPL Center in Allentown. My friend Tracey and I arrived safely (thanks to Brad) through a treacherous snowstorm and had a wonderful time.
Catherine Stroh, Publishing Assistant
Before all my friends received their driver’s licenses, we would always walk home from school, sometimes even in the snow. This could be a real drag, however we usually had a lot of fun. I recall lots of snowball fights and slipping in the ice and falling down at least once every single day, providing lots of laughs to everyone involved. I miss those days, especially since they are gone forever.
Tony Pisco, Art Director
It must have been this past winter that Evan and I walked to the playground. It was a little tricky with all of the snow but we made it and played on the snowed-up playground equipment for quite a while.
Donna Bachman, Accounting Manager
Growing up as a child I remember many snow storms and days. My sisters and I would make snow igloos on the curb of our pavements. They were large enough with openings that we could actually crawl through from one end to the other. Awesome as a kid, but not sure now that it was a safe way to play and enjoy the snow!

Galen Glen Winery's 7th Annual Toys-for-Tots Drive
Submitted by KATHLEEN MATSON This holiday season, Santa and his elves at Galen Glen Winery are working to make this the best year yet for underprivileged families in the county. Tasting Room Manager Kathy Matson states, "This is our seventh holiday season working with Santa and the US Marine Corps Toys-for-Tots campaign. Every year the amount of toys and monetary donations increases from the season before. We are striving to make this the best year yet." Santa will arrive at the winery Sunday, November 29 at noon. He will be available for photos. Matson implores, "Bring your camera and a member of our staff will be happy to help you capture a lasting memory." The winery will have a token gift for every family who brings a new, unwrapped toy or monetary donation. Plus, Santa will be sure to add you to his "nice" list. The toy and monetary donation collection boxes are currently at the winery and will be there until Sunday, December 13. The US Marines Toys-for-Tots foundation is an IRS recognized not-for-profit charity and since 1991 has been assisting the US Marine Corps in providing a tangible sign of hope to economicallydisadvantaged children at Christmas. The goal of the foundation is to provide, through a new toy at Christmas, a message of hope to less-fortunate youngsters that will assist them into becoming responsible, productive, and patriotic citizens. For more information about the winery's other award winning wines and other upcoming events, please visit www.galenglen.com. The tasting room may be reached at 570-386-3682. The staff looks forward to meeting you and your family and helping you create unforgettable memories at Galen Glen.

Lehigh Township Rails To Trails Seeking Information About ...
Submitted by NANCY THATCHER 1. Concrete Phone Booths: Lehigh Township Rails to Trails, along with Lehigh County Department of Parks, is overseeing an Eagle Scout who is refurbishing a concrete phone booth along the D&L trail north of the Treichlers bridge. It is known that these phone booths contained block phones that were used for communication between signal towers as to the location and movement of trains. Members of LTRT would like to know more about the use of these phone booths and the men who manned them. 2.Treichlers Dam: LTRT is also looking for photographs and historical information about the Treichlers Dam. There were many dams in the Lehigh River at one time. They formed slack water pools to deepen the river and make navigation on it easier. The dams also provided water for each of the canal sections. The boats would use the canals where areas of the river were too shallow or rocky for transit. The remains of the Trieichlers Dam can still be seen in the area of the river near where the concrete phone booth is located. Sometime in 2016, LTRT will be installing historical signs near both the phone booth and the remains of the dam, hence the need for information. If you have information, please call Nancy at 610-7670676 or send an email to LTR2T@hotmail.com.

They are coming in; they did not knock long and each one extends his hand [to me]. Well, these are our children, yes; You, dear God, be thanked!” And so wishing still availed; and it was a delight and joy. But whoever knew dad, that one knew his wish was [really] a prayer. The house is no longer so quiet and nothing is in its place. When 12 grandkids frolic and play tricks, it helps. Now two turkeys are necessary, (They brought them into the kitchen.) genuine, large, proud birds; afterwards, very soon, they were prepared. The girls were giving orders, such as – “Now mom, sit today, you and dad rest yourselves once like first-class gentry!”

with every heart held up to God over all the problems out there! And so everyone is obligated now (We hope they all are willing.) to put onto God high honor and thanks – that is a sweet Thanksgiving! [While this poem was written by Harvey M. Miller in the early part of the twentieth century, the emphasis on families getting together for the holiday and also on being thankful for everything that we have, remains relevant today. I hope everyone had a nice Thanksgiving.]

Model Tank Display At The Slatington Public Library
Submitted by LOUISE BECHTEL The Slatington Public Library currently has a display of model tanks in the library window. Our staff had advertised for the community to place military memorabilia on display in honor of Veteran’s Day, and a library board member responded. Naval veteran John Kisthardt is a juried member of the Pennsylvania Guild of Craftsmen, Lehigh Valley Chapter. He is juried in wood carving, primarily decoy and small bird carving. He had uncles that served in armored divisions in World War II, and he considered them to be childhood heroes. He decided to switch from carving birds to tanks to honor their service. John researched various tank models online for the look and dimensions. He then used his own drawings to create models with scrap wood in his basement workshop. The carving skill and attention to detail are evident on each model being displayed. The results are amazing replicas of tanks that helped to shape history. John is retired from NJ. Zinc Company and lives in Slatedale with his wife Sara. He has two daughters and two grandchildren. He is Vice President of the library board, serves on the Horsehead Community Development board, serves on Slatedale Cemetery Board, and plays drums in the Parryville Band.

December breaks out of the gate on December 5 with an 8:30 a.m. St. Nicholas feast celebration children's mass. At 10 a.m. there will be a children's prayer service after which the children will get back their shoe that is now filled with goodies. This was a tradition started many years ago by our patron, St. Nicholas, on his feast day. Also, on both December 5 and 6, after all the weekend masses, our Christmas Boutique and Book Sale will give a chance to get those last minute stocking stuffers and Christmas gifts. No one can miss this event. Coffee and donuts will be offered while you browse. Tuesday, December 8 will be the Feast of the Immaculate Conception. Thomas Derzack will enfold as our church is transformed for the holy day of the birth of Christ, December 25. Father will direct his "merry helpers" with the placement of decorations, the manger and many other surprises that is never the same each year. All are welcome to come to our church and visit and pay your respects to the newborn Christ child. It is our hope that Christ will be born anew in your mind and hearts on Christmas Day. ‘Twas The Night Before Christmas Poem For Pets NAPSNET “On a cozy winter’s night, when all are asleep,
Excited to see what new toys they’ve been sent,
Four-legged furry ‘children’ sleep by the tree in a heap,
It’s the season for merriment and gift giving to all,
Snuggled down deeply in soft Dig & Burrow beds,
Even their lists have been checked twice for a bright Maxglow Ball,
Sweet dreams of Chuckit! Ultra Sling soar through their heads,
The room overflows with gifts, all anew,
Within the house a great thump is heard from above, Each of the puppies bound from their beds, giving their old toys a shove, Their Glow in the Dark Collars provide a bright light, To unveil the magical man who’s arrived so late in the night, Bounding to the hearth with wagging tails they all went,
There’s even a JW Hol-ee Bone in a beautiful blue, As they’re given a treat and a scratch behind the ear, They wag their tails knowing they’ve been good this year, Back to their beds with their new toys snuggled tight, Happy holidays, from Petmate, and to all a good night.”

Cats vs. Cucumbers
The downside of funny animal videos going viral is how quickly cruel trends can start to spread. You may have noticed an increase in clips of cats freaking out after cucumbers have snuck up behind them while they’re snacking or napping. While everyone was debating the conundrum, “Why are cats so afraid of cucumbers?” they had to test the theory on their own feline friends to share their discoveries. And everyone was missing an important component to the experiment—it’s not nice, or healthy, to scare your cat no matter how silly you think they look. It’s not a matter of cucumbers specifically being scary, but of cats being in a trusting state, like eating or sleeping, and finding something new and unfamiliar suddenly invading their space. National Geographic was quick to point out why this craze needs to die out quickly: “Trying to startle your cat on purpose could cause them to injure themselves. break something, or lead to prolonged stress.” (news.nationalgeographic.com/2015/11/151117cats-cucumbers-videos-behavior) So while it may be funny to see how high your kitty can leap into the air, try finding a kinder way to play and let them in on the joke.

Enter Galen Glen Winery's Third Annual Chili Cookoff for Charity
Submitted by KATHLEEN MATSON Galen Glen Winery is calling all chefs, professional or home cooks, to enter their third annual chili cookoff to benefit the West Penn Fire Company. There is no entry fee for the contest and the competition is being held Saturday, January 23 from 12 to 3 p.m. at the winery. Interested chefs can contact or visit the winery to receive an entry form. The competition is limited to only six chefs and each entrant will receive a $25 Galen Glen gift card. The winner receives a $100 gift card and the second and third place winners receive wine and glasses. The winner also will have his or her recipe featured in October of 2016 for a Lehigh Valley Wine Trail event. In 2015, the competition drew over 300 visitors who acted as judges for the chili by voting for their favorite. Tasting Room Manager Kathy Matson notes that this year's contest will be slightly different for visitors: "This year, we are charging $1 to try the chili and vote for the winner. We will be matching this $1 donation and all proceeds will go to our local fire company.
Chili and fire fighters are the perfect pairing!" The only requirement for participating chefs is the use of Galen Glen Chambourcin or Cellar Red in the recipe.

Give The Gift Of Life-Saving Blood This Holiday Season
Submitted by BETH TOLL The American Red Cross encourages individuals and organizations to give something that means something this winter by making a lifesaving blood donation or hosting a blood drive. Blood donations often decline from now to New Year’s Day when holiday festivities pull people away from their donation appointments. Seasonal illnesses, such as colds and the flu, can also have a serious impact on blood donations In addition, there are fewer blood drives during the winter months when many hosting organizations postpone drives while people are traveling for the holidays. Severe winter weather may also cause scheduled blood drives to be canceled. Despite the busy holiday season and threat of extreme freezing weather, the need for blood remains steady. Organizations can help by hosting a blood drive during the winter months, and eligible donors are encouraged to make an appointment to give blood. Donors with all blood types are needed, especially those with types O negative, B negative, A negative and AB blood. Visit redcrossblood.org to learn more about hosting a blood drive. To make an appointment to donate blood, visit redcrossblood.org or call 1-800-RED CROSS. Upcoming donation locations: EASTON 12/1/2015, 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Faulkner Subaru, 330 Stoke Park Road. 12/4/2015, 1 p.m. to 6 p.m. at Charles Chrin Community Center, 4100 Green Pond Road.

Australia’s Sweetheart Takes Home The Mirror Ball For the first time ever in its 21-season run, I finally gave a flying pirouette about who won “Dancing With The Stars” this fall. I’m usually somewhat aware of the line-up as each new one is announced, waiting for a name that actually aligns with my Hollywood interests. They’re few and far between; I’ve always argued that the “stars” they enlist can barely be considered as such. They’re always hasbeens, reality rejects, former athletes, or ‘90s pop stars. In my opinion, the most famous thing to come out of DWTS is the Hough siblings. Julianne is trying to establish herself as a B-list actress—you can see her step into reckless Ariel’s dancing shoes in the 2011 “Footloose” remake, dueting with Tom Cruise in the 2012 “Rock of Ages” screen adaptation, or taking on a drippy Nicholas Sparks romance opposite Josh Duhamel in 2013’s “Safe Haven.” Her older brother Derek is known more for his choreography, but he also had a brief guest role on NBC’s “Nashville” last year and the sibs recently went up against each other on Spike’s LL Cool J-hosted “Lip Sync Battle.” But this season, I had to tune in. Granted, I was only interested in the performances of one particular dancer, but I tuned in just the same instead of rolling my eyes once again at the premise of this show. In September of 2006, I was a babyfaced freshman at Lock Haven University. I was just beginning my journalism classes, adjusting to dorm life, and trying to make new friends out of a sea of over 6,000 students. And in my first weekend,
Above, Bindi Irwin and dance partner Derek Hough await the winning announcement in the season 21 finale.

I received the news that shocked most of America: Steve Irwin, wildlife warrior and famed Crocodile Hunter, had died in a tragic accident. I loved watching Steve. His joyful mission to save animals was full of so much passion and enthusiasm that it was instantaneously contagious. He inspired me. And I cried right along with his wife, family, and friends during the publicly aired memorial service a little over a week later. So when DWTS revealed that their 2015 shining star would undeniably be 17-yearold Bindi, Steve’s bubbly and charming daughter, I knew I would want to watch. Paired with five-time champ Derek, she killed it. She busted out of her khaki in week one into a shower of green sequins to “Crocodile Rock” and I knew she was going to sweep the whole competition. I didn’t see every performance, as my television roster is quite full and I often forgot she was even on, but she’d be all over my go-to entertainment news outlets each week and I’d remember to go looking for video clips. She nailed the Dirty Dancing lift, she made the waltz look effortless, and she sailed through the weeks with high marks from the judges’ panel (which included Julianne this year). Her most emotional performance by far was when they tackled the theme of
Page 39
“Most Memorable Year” in week 4 and she finally opened up about the experience of losing her father at such a young age. The package that played before their dance was heart-breaking and I lost it when she tearfully told the camera, “For the rest of my life, I’ll kind of feel like he’s gonna come home.” There wasn’t a dry eye in the house and she earned her first perfect 10. She knocked it out of the park again in the finale, dancing a breath-taking freestyle to “Footprints in the Sand,” which concluded with a photo display of sweet young Bindi kissing her father on the cheek (left). She received a perfect score from all three judges. Throughout the three-month competition, the Aussie never let Hollywood go to her head. She remained a bright ray of sunshine, hugging the judges, hugging the hosts, gushing over her wonderful dance partner and how he had become her brother, and speaking openly about her love for her father and her country. While her enthusiasm almost seemed ingratiating and sanctimonious at times, it was easy to see that she is simply her father’s daughter. She’s so genuine that she seems fake to us jaded Americans. Her sob story did not win her that mirror ball—her spirit and determination did. She deserved to feel like her life had been changed, even if by such a commercial experience. Good on ya, Bindi!

Rotary Club Of Slatington Thank You
Submitted by MONICA SELLERS On behalf of the Rotary Club of Slatington, we would like to say thank you to everyone who volunteered to make this year’s Slatington Halloween parade a huge success! This year, Rotary, in addition to collecting nonperishable food during the parade for the Northern Lehigh Food Bank, participated by entering a float that won first prize in the Small Float Division. We collected almost 500 lbs. of food plus some cash donations. Rotary is thankful to the community for their continued support. To all the Rotarians and students who gave of their time and talent, we salute you: Jake Sipos, Gavin Kemery, Rebecca Blocker and Alexis Papay. Also, thank you to Michael O'Brien for driving his truck in the parade, to Turner Farms for all the corn stalks, to Kmart for the use of their shopping carts and to Rotarian Monica Sellers for coordinating the entire project.

Crockpot Chicken Gnocchi Soup
Recipe courtesy of pinchofyum.com.
Ingredients • 1 lb. boneless skinless chicken breasts • 2 tbsp cornstarch dissolved • 2 cups mirepoix (mixture of chopped • in 2 tbsp water onions, celery, and carrots) • 2 12oz. cans evaporated milk • 1-2 tsp dried basil • 2 1lb. packages mini potato gnocchi • 1-2 tsp Italian seasoning (about 4 cups) • 1 tsp poultry seasoning • 6 slices bacon • 1 tsp salt • 2-3 cloves garlic • 4 cups chicken broth • 5oz. fresh baby spinach Directions
Place chicken, mirepoix, basil, Italian and poultry seasonings, salt and broth in crockpot or slow cooker. Cover and cook on high for 4-5 hrs. or low for 6-8 hrs. Shred the chicken directly in the crockpot. Add the cornstarch mixture, evaporated milk and gnocchi. Stir and cover. Cut the bacon into small pieces and fry until crispy. Drain and wipe most of grease out of the pan, leaving a little bit for the spinach/garlic. Add garlic and sauté for one minute. Add the spinach and stir until wilted. Remove from heat. Add bacon and spinach to the crockpot and stir. Add any additional liquid as needed and season again with salt and pepper as desired. I have very important advice regarding this recipe: do not eat this soup if you plan to accomplish anything afterwards. It is so delicious, hearty, and filling that you will immediately need a nap following the feeding. Because this soup is so creamy and heavy, a little goes a long way and this recipe makes an abundance of servings. I had to abort my crockpot in lieu of a larger one to prevent a big overflowing mess. Another thing about this recipe: I think the smell was even better than the taste. Maybe it was the anticipation, knowing within 4-8 hours, a delicious soup would be ready to eat after little to no work put into it. That’s the magic of crockpots for ya! The smell of the chicken and seasonings cooking wafted throughout the house and the crockpot took on a gravitational pull to our noses throughout the day, as I’d lift the lid off probably twice an hour just to inhale. I hope you enjoy the recipe as much as my taste-testers and I did—good luck and enjoy!
