Welcome to Winter By John Hall, Blue Mountain Town & Country Gazette

Hey everyone, welcome to winter! In this issue we are going to look at a range of topics, including big news on the COVID-19 front in regards to vaccines. The information is moving very quickly there, so you should also check-in with us at www. townandcountrygazette.com between print issues for additional stories on COVID-19, as well as other topics. On the lighter side you will also find all the Christmas Cookie recipes we received in our recent Christmas Cookie Contest. Let the baking begin! And with the giving holidays all around us, we take a look at the pressure to overspend – particularly for families with children. This has been a year like no other when both adults and children have been

forced to miss out on so many of the “normal” things we’re used to. Related to that we have an interesting graphic that suggests we spend more time finding Continued on page 8

out and giving people what they really need, rather than just “more stuff.” Winter fitness is going to be a key consideration this winter for a number of reasons. First, the colder weather along with the pandemic will be keeping us indoors more than ever. For many of us that is absolutely going to mean less physical activity and a more sedentary lifestyle. Neither of those things is great for our physical health, nor our mental health. So to keep the physical activity going and

to help keep the mind fresh and clear, we have two articles – one on setting up an in-home workout and the other specifically focused on senior fitness tips – both designed for this winter ahead. The senior fitness article specifically has a number of links to additional online resources. We hope you’ll find both those articles helpful. For those of you doing some winter house-hunting or house-selling, we did a little exploring at Realtor. com to bring you a short list of specific tips for both sides of that coin. And one last thing: We want to express our big thanks to GIANT Food Stores for giving us four $50 GIANT Gift Cards that we will be giving to four individuals or families who can really use them during the month of December. If you know of someone who could really benefit from receiving one of these gift cards, please let us know as soon as possible by sending an email to kmarsh@ townandcountrygazette.com or leaving a message at 610-767-9600. So winter is here. Stay warm, stay healthy and grab the Town & Country Gazette every two weeks, which you may now do at GIANT Walnutport in addition to all our other distribution locations, or follow us online to stay up-to-date on the goings-on around the region. Happy Winter!

COVID-19 Vaccine News Within a timeline of amazing accomplishment, positive COVID-19 vaccine news is coming at us very quickly. Both at www.townandcountrygazette. com and here in our hardcopy issues each month, we want to keep you up-to-date on the latest developments around this extremely important topic that will have impact on each of our lives. The biggest development at the time of this writing is that Pfizer and BioNTech recently applied for an emergency use authorization for their vaccine with the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA). The vaccine, known as BNT162b2, could potentially be available for use in high-risk populations in the United States by the end of December according to the two companies. The vaccine requires two doses a few weeks apart, and protection is achieved 28 days after the first shot. The submission to the FDA is based on results from the Phase 3 clinical trial of Pfizer’s vaccine, which began in the United States on July 27 and enrolled more than 43,000 volunteers. According to an FDA official quoted by CNN, the intent is to make a decision about authorizing Pfizer’s coronavirus vaccine within a few weeks of a key meeting involving the FDA’s Vaccines and Related Biological Products Advisory Committee, a panel of independent experts, scheduled for Dec. 10. First Vaccine Submitted This is the first coronavirus vaccine to seek regulatory clearance in the United States and was submitted just 248 days after Pfizer announced its plans to collaborate on the vaccine with BioNTech. The final analysis from the trial found the coronavirus vaccine was 95% effective in preventing infections, even in older adults, and caused no serious safety concerns. The submission also includes safety data on about 100 children ages 12 to 15. About 42% of global participants and 30% of US participants in the Phase

3 study have racially and ethnically diverse backgrounds, according to the companies, and 41% of global and 45% of US participants are ages 56 to 85. The FDA official said the decision on the vaccine could come in a matter of days, or possibly weeks after the December 10 meeting. The official stressed that an exact date when an emergency use authorization (EUA) would be issued couldn’t be given because the process has to be done correctly. Moderna Vaccine Progress Moderna, another pharmaceutical company, announced that early clinical trial results show its vaccine is 94.5% effective, and it also plans to apply to the FDA for authorization very soon after it accumulates more safety data. If the FDA authorizes the vaccines, they can then be immediately distributed to states, according to a presentation made last month at the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. However, no one can be vaccinated until a CDC advisory committee reviews the data, recommends the vaccine, and decides which groups will receive it first. After FDA authorization, the CDC’s Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices, an independent panel of experts, will meet within 24 to 48 hours, according to a CDC spokesperson.

Holiday Pressure to Overspend (excerpt) SOURCE: NextAdvisor

After a year defined by its disruption of normal life, parents are feeling the pressure to maintain family traditions this holiday season – and the spending that comes with them. Parents with kids younger than 18 are most likely to feel pressure to spend more than they can afford this year (23%), compared to parents with adult children (10%) and non-parents (15%), according to the latest survey from NextAdvisor. “We feel bad that our kids have been cooped up in the house all year, or that we’ve had to do away with some of the usual traditions like summer camp and vacations,” says Farnoosh Torabi, contributing editor at NextAdvisor. “The holidays may feel like the final chance to make 2020 feel like it wasn’t a total bummer – especially for our kids who missed out on the normal childhood experiences.” More broadly, Americans are responding to this unusual holiday season by reining in their spending and rethinking the financial tradeoffs they’re willing to make to keep up traditions. Overall, 39% of Americans are planning to spend less on holiday

Winter Home Buying & Selling Tips SOURCE: Realtor.com

If you’re looking to buy a home, or sell your home this coming winter, here are some tips taken from Realtor.com for both sides of that coin. Winter Home Buying Savvy home buyers know that winter is typically a good time to embark on a house hunt, since much of their competition stays home until spring, but not this year. Since the coronavirus has kept buyers on lockdown much of 2020, many are making up for lost time right now. Here are some tactics to put you ahead of the pack. Secure your financing as soon as possible. / Getting pre-approved for a mortgage and securing financing are an essential first step when buying a home. It tells you how much house you can afford, and lets you make an offer as soon as you find your dream home. Know what you want before you house hunt. / COVID-19 has changed how we live and work. Make a list of your must-haves before you start house shopping – and share your needs with your real estate agent.

Tour homes virtually. / Real estate agents are embracing virtual tours to ease coronavirus safety concerns. In virtual tours you can often ask questions in real time to help narrow your list of homes to then see in person. Don't dawdle if you want to make an offer. / In September, there were nearly 40% fewer homes on the market than the same month last year, while buyer demand has increased. Wait too long to submit an offer and another buyer might beat you to it. Make your offer stand out. / A cash offer, an inspection waiver (this has risks) or an escalation clause can all make your offer more attractive to sellers. Each speeds up the process for both you and the seller. Winter Home Selling Many will wait until spring to sell their home, but for some – for one reason or another, the option to wait until spring may not exist. If you’re selling this winter, here are some winter home-selling tips to make your place stand out from the rest. The main ingredient is good old-fashioned sweat equity. Think “street appeal” and focus on your landscaping. Dress up your garden beds. /Your beds shouldn’t look dreary. While adding mulch won't help plants Continued on page 16

grow when the ground is frozen, a light coating of mulch will cover up dead material and make the landscaping pop. Mix in color and greenery. / There are a number of winter hardy plants like the vibrant red flowering quince or boxwood. Holly and pine hold their color

throughout the winter. Intertwine these with colorful fabric from a crafts store and dried flowers to create attention-grabbing arrangements. On a cold winter day, color makes people feel warm and fuzzy. Add lighting. / As the days get shorter, lighting up your home's exterior becomes more important. Start with path lighting – which helps with navigation – and use additional lighting to highlight your home's best features. When it comes to winter home sales, lights aren't only a great idea – they're a necessity. Don't ignore the backyard. / Consider hauling out your patio furniture for a house showing to help visitors determine how they would use the space. Sweep off special features, such as fountains, decorative paving, or the pool area. If you want every advantage possible in a difficult winter market, you need to make buyers understand the glory of the home in the spring and summer. Buying or selling, know your strategy.

Creating an AtHome Workout SOURCE: Various

If you’re looking to create an at-home workout this winter, you’ll need some basic equipment. The best way to begin your planning is to decide which exercises you want to perform. Are you looking for strength? Are you looking for stretch? Think about what you want to accomplish, first, and that will help you determine which kinds of equipment you’ll need. That said here are some basic equipment suggestions to get you started. Yoga Mat / A squishy yoga mat is essential for at-home workouts. If you do exercises like Pilates and yoga they require a soft surface, and a cushioned yoga mat is ideal. A yoga mat will also be useful if you do core work and body weight exercises. Foam Roller / A foam roller will help you relax sore muscles. After a session of stretching or working out, it allows you to apply pressure to muscles, tendons, and ligaments that are tight. Experts agree that foam rolling can also improve blood flow and flexibility, and decrease your risk of injury.

Stability Ball / A stability ball is extremely versatile and comes in several sizes. You can use it for core, leg, and upper body workouts. Some experts say the 55 cm ball is the best choice to cover all the bases. Free Weights / To get the most out of strengthening exercises, you'll need a good set of free weights. Opt for lighter weights if you're looking to tone your muscles, but if you're trying to bulk up, consider buying a heavier set. These days they come in a range of trendy colors sure to fit in anywhere. Jump Rope / A quick and easy cardio workout can be done with a jump rope. Find an open space and proceed with caution if you live in an apartment building or with someone who is working from home. But you can always take your playground toy-turned-cardio tool to the backyard or park and jump like nobody's watching. Core Sliders / Core sliders are sliding discs that will help you get a good ab workout. A few reps with these will have your legs, arms, and abs burning – in a good way. Clean up and storage Cleanliness is just as important in your home gym as it is at an outside gym. That's why you'll want to have a towel and room fan to help keep you cool and not dripping sweat during your workout. Then when you’re done, spray your equipment down with a disinfectant spray and wipe it dry. Once the cleanup is taken care of, equipment should be organized and put away. If it doesn't fit in your closet, consider storing it in a wicker basket. The stability ball can be a challenge to store, but if you use it as your desk chair in your home office space, you’ll get the benefit of working your core while you handle your real work.

Senior Fitness at Home SOURCE: Various

Staying at home this coming winter, no matter the reason, can lead to a more sedentary lifestyle and unhealthy weight gain. So what can a senior person do to stay fit at home during these coming winter months? Here are a few ideas to get you started. Chair Yoga / This adapted version of yoga is designed to make it easier for older adults to perform exercises while safely seated in a chair. You can find a DVD online to purchase or you can follow along with Chair Yoga videos on YouTube. Go4Life / The National Institute on Aging (NIA) designed the Go4Life program to help older adults stay active and fit. Their website shares free tools and resources, including a free home workout DVD. This site will put you right where you want to be for more information: https://www.nia.nih.gov/ health/exercise-physical-activity Tai Chi / This ancient Chinese marital art uses slow, deliberate movement to help older adults safely build strength, stamina and flexibility. It also helps reduce the pain and symptoms associated

with osteoarthritis. The Arthritis Foundation gives you more information and a two-and-a-half minute video that will slowly take you through two Tai Chi exercises that you can do either standing or sitting, here: https://www.arthritis.org/health-wellness/ healthy-living/physical-activity/yoga/tai-chiexercises-for-arthritis Strength training / Adding strength training to your weekly fitness routine is especially important during the winter when we tend to be less active. training. At no cost, you may download the complete guide here: https://www.cdc.gov/physicalactivity/ downloads/growing_stronger.pdf One reminder that is true if you are adding any new form of exercise: talk with your physician for advice before getting started. In-Home Gym As a senior, don’t let the intimidating sound of “in-home gym” deter you from setting one up. It will give you more at home exercise options and you can do it on a budget. Here are some things to consider. Treadmill / Even a cost-efficient treadmill allows you to get the cardiovascular exercise you need. You can easily fluctuate between a slow, walking pace and a jog, or anything in between. The effects a simple treadmill exercise can have are remarkable. Ellipticals / These provide another way to achieve a low-impact workout. The advantage of an elliptical is that in addition to offering a great lower-body workout, they also have a positive effect on the upper body. Dumbells / In regards to the strength training mentioned above, it’s easy to build and retain muscle strength with simple lifting machines or light dumbbells. For external inspiration, consider purchasing home workout DVDs, which run the gamut from

intense weightlifting to slow (but steady) cycling. You can also find scores of effective workout routines online for free, and YouTube is full of workout routines that can be enormously beneficial for seniors at home.

COVID-19 in the Air: Stay Safe SOURCE: Johns Hopkins University / Center for Health Security

COVID-19 cases are rising throughout Pennsylvania and COVID-19 is literally in the air depending on where you are and what the circumstances are. To stay as safe as possible through the holidays and the winter months ahead when we will spend more time indoors, here are a few things to keep in mind from the Johns Hopkins University Center for Health Security.

BIRTHDAY COUPON Mail to the Blue Mountain Town & Country Gazette, P.O. Box A, Walnutport, PA 18088 Please Print Legibly! • Current Month Only!

Name________________________ Hometown ___________________ Age on Birthday____________ Date of Birth____________________ One person per issue will be randomly chosen to win a FREE Birthday Cake from Scoopendorf’s Ice Cream Company, Walnutport.

Must pick up coupon at the Blue Mtn. Town & Country Gazette office to receive free cake.

1. Coronavirus lingers in the air and travels more than 6 feet. 2. It is spread by apparently healthy, but infected people. They shed it with every breath. 3. The higher the local infection rate, the higher the number of apparently healthy people shedding the virus in your community. These guidelines will help you avoid breathing unsafe air and reduce your risk of getting COVID-19: 1. Wear masks at all times, indoors and out, except at home with people you live with. 2. Make sure everyone, including children age 2 and above, wear masks. 3. If someone is in your home who does not live there, everyone should wear masks. 4. If possible, avoid being near people and keep exposure as short as you can. 5. If you really need to schedule an indoor activity – a hair appointment, shopping, religious service, etc., accomplish the activity early in the day, or get the first available appointment of the day and make sure the place requires everyone to “mask up.” Air Ventilation & Filtration Increase ventilation and filtration to make the indoor air in your home safer. If your home has mechanical ventilation – central heating and air that moves air through ducts, do the following: 1. Install a higher efficiency filter in your system.

MERV 13 if possible. 2. Set the fan to “on” instead of “auto” so the air continuously passes through the filter. 3. Add a HEPA portable air cleaner and a room humidifier. If your home has natural ventilation – windows that open, room air conditioners and radiators for heating, do the following: 1. Open windows to increase ventilation and make sure there is a cross breeze. 2. Add a HEPA portable air cleaner to fit the size of the room and a room humidifier. Run the air cleaner continuously, especially on the highest setting when guests or workers are in your home. There is an economical Do-It-Yourself option using a box fan and MERV 13 filter. The directions

can be found at this website: https://covidstraighttalk. org/boxfanairfilter Humidity & Stale Air Humidifiers are important because in dry air, the virus lasts longer and people are more susceptible to infection. Ideally, keep the relative humidity in the room, or in your home, between 40% and 60%. Sensors are available to measure relative humidity (RH) and carbon dioxide (CO2). If you use RH and CO2 sensors, you can take action based on the reading. For example, if the RH levels are low – which is common indoors during winter – you can increase your humidifier. If the CO2 levels are rising, you can open a window or use a fan to blow out the stale indoor air.

5 Desember, 1984 Marriye iss der sext Desember, der Daag, wu viele Leit in unserer Welt em Heiliche Nicholaus sei Gebottsdaag feiere. Der Nicholas waar en Bischof in Glee-Asien un waar im Yaahr 350 gschtarrewe. Er waar en grosser Mann un waar net yuscht in seinre eegene Schtadt verehrt, awwer weit un breet, gans in Deitschland nei, wu unsere Voreldre beikumme sin. In Deitschland hot’s aa en Kall gewwe, as sie „der Belsnickel“ gheese hen. Daer waar schunn vun uralder Zeit unnich de Deitsche. Daer waar so ebbes vumme Hanswascht – woll ken Engel, un aa net immer en Bengel.

Awwer was leit dehinner? Mol ee Ding, as mer graad vannenaus saage muss iss,as die Bedeiding „Nicholas in Furs“, as mer oftmols heert, gans un gaarli falsch iss – mindeschdens wann’s zu der urschpringliche Bedeiding kummt. Mir saage als „Der alt Nick gricht dich.“ Im Englische Waddebuch heest’s Watt „Nickel“ News@TownAndCountryGazette.com || DECEMBER 3, 2020

Richard Druckenbrod (1929 – 2003) in the Morning Call December 5, 1984 Tomorrow is the 6th of December, the day when many people in our world celebrate the birthday of St Nicholas. Nicholas was a bishop in Asia Minor and he died in 350 A. D. He was an important man and was not just revered in his own area, but far and wide, well into Germany, from where our ancestors came. In Germany there was also fellow that they called the “Belsnickel”. [The word can also be spelled

“Belznickel”.] He was already from olden times among the Germans. That one was something of a rascal, certainly no angel but also not always a villain. The trouble was when the Germans wanted to give up their paganism for Christianity. But like (it is) with so many other things, it had not taken some of the elders long to ‘rebaptize’ or rename the heroes of the past, so they could still be retained for a longer time. And so, in many regions of Germany, they tied in the Belsnickel with St. Nicholas, so church people Continued on page 28

could not say anything against that (tradition). And that (tie) went so far that the Belsnickel, with his sack of nuts and hard candy, now came around on the 6th of December to the people to see which children were good and which children were bad. [Has anyone in our area ever heard of the Belsnickel coming on St. Nicholas’ Day? Please let us know if you have!] But what’s my point here? Well one thing that one has to say right up front is that the meaning “Nicholas in furs”, that one often hears, is completely and truly false – at least when it comes to the original meaning. Pitt [Pitt Schweffelbrenner – his pen name] recently studied these matters here rather well and would like to propose that it would be better for the name to mean thus: “Little devil in hides.” It is no doubt that the word “Bels” is like the English “pelt” and means the hides from animals. But the word “nickel” in that name, in general, has nothing to do with St. Nicholas. It means more like a little devil or angry ghost. We often say,“The old Nick [The devil] will get you.” (Also), in the English dictionary the word “nickel” is called something

like a “demon”. [More on the etymology for ‘nickel’: “German Kupfernickel niccolite, literal, copper demon (so called because though looking like copper it [the ore] yielded none.)” - Random House Dictionary ] From Alfred L. Christmas Eve traditions in our introduction to the chapter on Christmas mummers. To repeat: Mumming, a custom practiced by eighteenthcentury Philadelphians of Episcopalian background, consisted of groups of folk performers who went from house to house on Christmas Eve giving short traditional theatrical pieces with the expectation of being rewarded in return, with food or small coin. The rural Belsnickel, who customarily made his rounds alone, went from farmhouse to farmhouse rewarding good children and frightening and punishing the disobedient. When the two traditions, mumming and Belsnickling—met in Pennsylvania a new tradition evolved, one that continued in practice in inland cities of the commonwealth until the opening decades of the twentieth century: urban Belsnickling. By urban Belsnickling we mean a group of masked youth who banded together on Christmas Eve and went from house to house entertaining on musical instruments and singing, all with the intent of being rewarded in return with Christmas goodies or small coins. Throughout the nineteenth century, up to the discontinuance of the custom in the first two decades of the present (twentieth) century, two Belsnickling traditions existed side by side in

Pennsylvania: the rural and the urban. The rural Belsnickel made his rounds usually alone, a bag of nuts and cookies in one hand and a switch in the other, to reward or to punish little ch i l d r e n , depending on their behavior in the weeks immediately preceding Christmas; if they were well behaved the Belsnickel threw good things to eat on the floor for them to pick up and eat, or on the other hand if there was an ill-behaved youngster, boy or girl, a sharp switch of the whip was applied before the child was permitted to pick up the gifts. Eventually, however, the urban Belsnickel also influenced the traditional rural one. Rural Belsnickels, too, began expecting a handout. (Usually liquor!) The Belsnickel tradition was carried wherever the Pennsylvanians migrated, into many parts of this country and Canada. Belsnickling, for instance, was practiced up until very recently in such distant places as North Carolina,Virginia, and Nova Scotia.]

Chenille Pit Bull Terrier Mix Catasauqua Female Medium House-Trained: Yes Health: Vaccinations up to date, spayed / neutered. Meet Chenille Meet Chenille! Our momma girl deserves a life of no more babies and just love. Chenille came to us very pregnant right after her owner took his own life in front of her. She was shut down, scared of the world. Chenille is putting all this behind her, she is done with babies, just finished up Heartworm treatment and now its her time at a new forever. A few facts about Chenille - housebroken, crate trained, initially shy to meet but once she warms up she is a love bug who seeks companionship from her people. We are saying no cats as her curiosity for small animals is just a bit too much. She is a strong girl and enjoys going for walks. You must be over 21 to apply and live within 2 hours of the Lehigh Valley, PA area within NJ or PA (NO EXCEPTIONS!). Visit our website to apply www.outcastrescue.com

Learning Through the Holidays Part 1 by Christine Allen, president of Reading Escapades & Math Explorers, Inc.

The holiday break is about to be upon us again and I expect this year to be more of a whirlwind than usual. As for their education, while some students have flourished in the new school environment, most have found it much more difficult. I am sure that the craziness of the holiday will be exasperated by the additional stress for their education. To help our children as well as their teachers over the break, we, as parents, can transition our kids from sitting in front of a computer to hands on learning experiences right in our homes! Finding recipes to cook together can help your child get more familiar with fractions. For older students sitting with you and looking over bills can allow them a unique look in to how to balance a check book and keep track of what they spend; the younger kids can practice adding and subtracting with these real world numbers. Word problems can be especially difficult for students. Create your own story with some numbers and have your child solve the problem.

By creating positive experiences around education, it allows your child to find a love in learning as well as create a family bond full of memories. For more ideas and ways to create new family memories on the holidays, check out our website www.read2day. com where we have books full of fun (and activities) that you can use to make learning a joy.
