7 Ways To Get Ready For Christmas Early www.joyfullythriving.com/

Are you ready for Christmas yet? I love Christmas and am one of those people who plan for Christmas all year long. Every Christmas, I realize I need to be more intentional with my planning than ever before because getting ready for Christmas as a mom with little ones is a big challenge! We want to make Christmas special and enjoy the season with them. The more things we do to get ready for Christmas early, the more we can simply enjoy Christmas when it is here. I started thinking through all the things I normally do to get ready for Christmas and realized there are quite a few things I could get ready for Christmas early. The sooner you start organizing yourself for Christmas, the smoother the month of December passes. Isn’t that what we all want? We all want to be able to enjoy Christmas with our families. Let’s make that our goal by crossing a couple things off our to-do lists now. This to do list will work if you start planning in July – or in November. Either way, it is never too early to start planning ahead for Christmas! Continued on page 4

7 Ways to get Ready Continued from page 3

Here are a couple ways to get ready for Christmas early. 1. Make your Christmas shopping list now. Let’s start simple. Sit down and write your list of the people for whom you want to buy presents. Now, be realistic. What is your budget for gifts? Do you really need to buy presents for everyone on your list? Take some time to really think through your list. Include everyone you have thought of and decide if you are buying or making a gift for them. 2. Look through your gift closet and discover what Christmas gifts you have already bought. If you’re like me, you shop year round for good deals that your family would enjoy. Look through the closet where you have stashed all those gifts and rediscover what you already have on hand – and for whom. Maybe you’ll be pleasantly surprised that you are already finished shopping for one or two people on your list. If you haven’t started shopping yet, there’s no better time to start than now! (And next January, you can start really early by shopping year round too!) 3. Email / call / text your family and ask for gift ideas.

Whether you have started shopping or not, it’s time to start getting ideas. Send out a quick email asking for gift ideas or suggestions. Don’t wait until the second week of December to do this! Do it now because the Christmas sales start earlier every year. Once you have some ideas, start looking! I’m a big fan of Amazon shopping and watch the deals closely in the weeks leading up to Christmas. 4. Buy Christmas stamps. It’s a little thing but think how nice it will be to avoid the post office when it starts getting really busy! Buy stamps for your Christmas letter or just to send those couple Christmas cards. Either way, buy the stamps now and cross that off your list. Bonus points if you go ahead and get your Christmas cards ready for the mail early, too! If you are taking pictures for Christmas cards, consider doing that in October or early November so it is done in plenty of time for mailing. 5. Look at your December calendar and start filling in dates. This is a big one because December can get busy very quickly! I know we already have at least one party on our calendar. This year, I got smart and scheduled our annual Christmas piano recital back in October so all the parents could put it on their calendar early. We are all glad we did! You might decide to print off a simple December calendar and

put it on your fridge so everyone can reference it. If you use a digital calendar, make sure you keep it updated. Don’t forget to schedule any special family events (like driving around to look at the lights) if you really want to make it happen. 6. Double one or two of your meals and freeze them for those busy December evenings. I’m a big believer in using your freezer to your advantage and the holidays are a time when it can really come in handy. There will be those busy nights (even with filling in your calendar early) where there won’t be much time to put dinner on the table. If you have a meal in the freezer or cooking in the crock-pot, you’ll have one less thing to worry about – which is always good! (If you’re looking for a good one, this 5 ingredient Mexican chicken is one of my favorite crock pot recipes.) 7. Bake a batch of Christmas cookies and put them in the freezer. Let’s make our last item a fun one! Go ahead and start your Christmas baking now. Did you know that most Christmas cookies will freeze wonderfully? I know this because my freezer is one of my best time saving friends. Make a list of the Christmas treats you like to make each year and bake one of this weekend. Bonus points (again) if it is one of your more time-consuming recipes now.

If you want to free up even more time in December, make a plan to bake one new Christmas cookie each week from now until Christmas and store them in the freezer. I tend to make at least 3 or 4 batches of buckeyes over the Christmas season so those are on my freezer list already this month. We all want to enjoy Christmas so let’s do it by crossing a couple things off our list now so we can slow down and enjoy the season!

Christmas On A Budget: 5 Tips For Making Your Holiday Affordable And Still Enjoyable Written by Zina Kumok|

CUT OUT AND KEEP FOR INFORMATION

Holiday gift-giving can be a drain, both on your mental health and your wallet. We've put together a list of ideas to help you celebrate Christmas within your limits. 2019 is rolling to a close and that means the Christmas holiday season is upon us. As you age deeper and deeper into adulthood, the holiday spirit takes on a different meaning. Hopefully the feelings of cheer and goodwill stay the same, but your attitude towards presents starts to shift. Namely, it changes from something you await eagerly to something you endure wearily. That might be an exaggeration, but gift-giving does take on new connotations once you’re expected to give as much as you get. It can feel like an imposition to spend so much money on so many people – especially if you’re living on a shoestring budget. It’s no wonder that so many Americans find themselves deep in credit card debt by the time the new year rolls around, often failing to pull

themselves out by the next holiday season. But Christmas shopping doesn’t have to be a budget-buster. There are plenty of ways you can cut back on holiday expenses, shaving off a few dollars or even eliminating them entirely. You just have to be willing to try something new. If you’re looking for ways to cut back this holiday season, here are some of my favorite methods. Make a budget Christmas spending often goes overboard when consumers fail to reconcile their budget with their shopping list. To avoid overspending, determine how much you can afford to spend on Christmas and then make a list of all your holiday obligations, including presents, travel, and decorations. Then, ascribe a dollar amount to each item, overestimating slightly. It will probably hurt to spend less this year, but consider this: consumers still haven’t repaid their credit card bills from last year’s holidays. If you’re in the same boat, add up how much you’ve spent Continued on page 14

Christmas on a Budget Continued from page 12

on credit card interest and stick to the budget this year. Find extra savings Looking at a long list of presents to buy? Here are some of my favorite shopping hacks: Look for discount codes Sites like RetailMeNot or Honey aggregate coupon codes so you can always snag the best deal. I also try to shop through retailers who use Ebates, a browser extension that gives you cash-back for most of your purchases. Sign up for a store’s email list Usually you’ll get an extra 10-20 percent off if you’re a new subscriber. Sometimes I’ll even create a new email address to get multiple discounts. Use a cash-back credit card The Chase Freedom® typically offers five percent cash-back at department stores in one of their 5% cash back category quarters per year. (But it’s not a guarantee). The Discover it® Cash Back card provides five percent cash-back at different places each quarter you activate, such as at Amazon and on groceries, up to $1,500 in purchases. Discover will also match the cash-back earned for new cardholders, effectively making it a 10 percent cash-back rate in

select categories for the first year. Shop with used gift cards If I know exactly where I’m doing my holiday shopping, I’ll buy used gift cards for those stores where you can sometimes save up to 10 percent on a card. You can even find discounted gift cards at Costco or Sam’s Club, with savings up to 25 percent off. Save on wrapping I love wrapping Christmas gifts more than anything, but wrapping paper, bows, and ribbon add up quickly. I shop at the dollar store for all my wrapping needs, where you can get more than enough paper for just a few bucks. When I was really living on a tight budget, I saved cartoons from the Sunday paper to wrap my gifts. Yes, your gifts won’t look as beautiful under the tree, but it’s better than spending $20 on something that will end up in the trash.eap gift ideas A couple of years ago, I asked my friend Melissa what she’d put on her Christmas list. A recent homeowner, Melissa was practical and asked that her parents come down and help her with some house projects instead of buying a physical gift. I remember thinking how grown-up she was, eschewing traditional gifts in favor of sweat equity. Now, I understand the genius behind her thinking. If you have a special skill, such as woodworking Continued on page 16

or landscape design, give that as your present. The monetary value will be much higher than whatever you’d find at Macy’s, and it could be especially precious to the beneficiary. Plus, it won’t cost you anything except for your time. Alternatives to gifts Instead of buying everyone on your list an expensive present, here are some gift alternatives that won’t make you look like a Scrooge. Take the money you’d spend on gifts and treat 12 New Model Homes

everyone to dinner at your favorite restaurant, an evening at the movies or an afternoon at an escape room. The camaraderie you get from sharing an experience together will last longer than the thrill of opening a cashmere sweater. Another popular alternative is to do a gift exchange instead of buying each person a present. Draw names and set a price limit, such as $30. That’s enough to buy a substantial gift without ruining your holiday budget. This is perfect for big families, where gift-giving can get pricey once spouses and children come into the mix. Some families even decide to skip presents for adults and only buy gifts for the kids.

Rescue a Friend

Bam Bam

Meet Me In Allentown on December 7th Shih Tzu & Maltese Mix Whitehall Adult Male Small Health: Spayed / neutered. Good in a home with other dogs, cats. Prefers a home without children. What kind of home would be best for me? Bam Bam is a doll baby of a dog who knows his mind and can talk to you all day about what the two of you need to do today. He would be comfortable in a lot of homes but I think he would prefer one that speaks "dog" fluently and can converse intelligently with this sweet little guy. What is my personality like? Bam Bam is a mixed breed with a lot of Shih tzu attitude. He sheds like the dickens so somewhere in there is some terrier along with perhaps some Maltese. He is very talkative and more than a little belligerent when he doesn't want to do what you want him to do. He gets along well

with big dogs and small dogs. Bam Bam is not housetrained from a peeing perspective. Neutering has helped a lot. He has stopped marking constantly but we're sending him with a belly band as he trains on proper house manner. He knows basic commands and does love to sit with you. He is very talkative, and has a low grumble/ mumble that he does when he wants to communicate that something feels good or another dog has gotten too close and he wants to let them know this is his lap at the moment. His new owner will have to be Shih savvy and understand that the grumbling is not aggressive growling. He does not exhibit resource guarding, although is not patient about waiting his turn to get to a bowl. How do I act when I first meet new people? Friendly

Lehigh Valley Voted Who’s Who for

2018

Just in Time for the Holidays submitted by Deb Barhight

The Woman’s Club of Slatington had a jump start to the upcoming holidays at their November meeting. Club member Hali Kuntz shared her family recipe for Kiffles that has been passed down through many generations. After a wonderful demonstration and sharing of tips for success, the club members were able to try their hands at rolling and filling the Kiffles with apricot and nut mixtures. Some excellent baked Kiffles were then enjoyed by all. The club will have their annual Holiday Party at the December meeting where there will be fun, games, gift exchange and a cookie swap. Interested women are always welcome to attend a meeting to see if interesting speakers, meeting new friends, and community service might be something you would enjoy. For more information call 610-392-9695 or the Public Library at 610-767-6461. 28

Chorus We Three Kings (The original Christmas Carol) We three kings of Orient are Bearing gifts, we traverse afar, Field and fountain, moor and mountain Following yonder star. Chorus: O Star of wonder, star of night, Star with royal beauty bright; Westward leading, still proceeding, Guide us to thy Perfect Light. Born a King on Bethlehem’s plain, Gold I bring to crown Him again. King forever, ceasing never Over us all to reign. Chorus Frankincense to offer have I Incense owns a Deity nigh, Prayer and praising, all men raising, Worship Him, God most high. Chorus Myrrh is mine, its bitter perfume Breathes of life of gathering gloom; Sorrowing, sighing, bleeding, dying, Sealed in the stone-cold tomb. Chorus Glorious now behold Him arise,

King and God and Sacrifice, Alleluia, Alleluia Earth to heav’n replies. Chorus - Reverend John Henry Hopkins, Jr. [John Henry Hopkins Jr. (October 28, 1820 – August 14, 1891) was an American clergyman and hymnodist, most famous for composing the song "We Three Kings of Orient Are" in 1857 (written as part of a Christmas pageant for his nieces and nephews). However, it did not appear in print until his Carols, Hymns, and Songs was published in 1863). Hopkins was born in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, the son of John Henry Hopkins, an Episcopal bishop. Hopkins graduated from the University of Vermont with an A.B. in 1839, and then a Master's Degree in 1845. After a stint as a journalist, he graduated from the General Theological Seminary in 1850, and became a deacon, author, illustrator, and designer. He was the seminary's first music teacher from 1855 to 1857, composed several hymns, and edited the Church Journal. Hopkins served as rector of Trinity Church in Plattsburgh, New York from 1872 to 1876 and of Christ Episcopal Church in Williamsport, Pennsylvania from 1876 to 1887. He delivered the eulogy at the funeral of President Ulysses S Grant in 1885, and he died in Hudson, New York in 1891. He was buried next to his father at Bishop's House, Rock Point, Burlington,Vermont. (From a Wikipedia article.)]
