Lehigh Township Historical Society News Submitted by Ruth Hall Kent

The Lehigh Township Historical Society wishes all of our members, friends and neighbors a very Merry Christmas and holiday season this year! This is the time for family and fun, remembering, sharing, and giving. The gift shop at the Historical Centre in Pennsville will be open on a limited basis on Monday December 9th from noon to 4 pm and Tuesday morning December 10th from 9 am to noon. If you are looking for a unique book or other item from our gift shop, please stop in or call. In a special arrangement with Cindy Beck Deppe from Becky's Drive-In, we are coordinating the sale and availability of her family's book Travel Along With Becky's Camera during December. Please stop by on the above dates or call the Historical Centre at 610-440-0151 and leave a message if you are interested in obtaining a book for holiday gift giving. The Lehigh Township Lions Club recently visited the Historical Centre and were very impressed by the displays of old items in the museum. The Society is very happy that so many members came to visit. The Lions Club then hosted two of the Society's officers at their dinner meeting where more information about the Society was presented and questions answered. The Society was very surprised

Local Author Paula Stoneback Book Signing at Slatington Public Library

Paula Stoneback

What do you do when you have a story in your heart and you love Christmas? Well, if you are Paula Noakes Stoneback, you call Santa to see what’s happening at the North Pole that you might write about. Ms. Stoneback, who is a graduate or Northern

Lehigh High School, worked as a photographer for many years but has always felt the calling to be an author. She took time away from her business to write about her most favorite holiday, Christmas! Of course she enlisted the approval of Santa and her book North Pole East, Santa’s New Town was born. On Saturday, November 24, 2018, Ms. Stoneback visited the Slatington Public Library and shared her experiences as an author. She, her sister Patty, and audience member seven-year old Madden, read a few chapters of her book. This is a delightful story about Santa’s announcement to expand his workshop and to enter the 21st century by going online, however not everyone at the North Pole is happy about this change. Ms. Stoneback did not share the ending of the story, but she did treat her audience to refreshments and a book signing. Out library has a copy of North Pole East, Santa’s New Town, a 44-page illustrated chapter book, if you are interested in borrowing it. The book is also available through Amazon. Proceeds from sales of the book are donated to St. Luke’s Pediatric Unit and the Literacy Initiative.

Winter is just around the corner! Many people lack enough warm clothing to stay protected throughout the winter months. Harding Funeral Home of Slatington is looking for our community’s help to Share the Warmth this holiday season. During the month of December, Harding Funeral Home will be collecting new and gently used winter clothing. Coats, Hats, Gloves, Scarves, Boots, NEW socks, and Blankets for adults and children. These items will be collected and donated to those in need locally. If you are able, please help in our efforts to keep numerous men, women, and children warm this winter! Until December 31, you can bring your winter items to the Harding Funeral Home at 25-27 N. Second Street, Slatington, Pa 18080, Monday through Thursday from 9 a.m. – 3 p.m. Feel free to come inside to donate or simply place your winter items in our donation box that is located underneath our carport. 10 Tips for Safer Winter Generator Usage for Home & Business Owners Follow manufacturer’s instructions and ensure proper ventilation, says OPEI Winter is here, and if your electricity goes out due to snow and ice, a generator can keep your power flowing to your home or business. The Outdoor Power Equipment Institute (OPEI), an international trade association representing small engine, utility vehicle and outdoor power equipment manufacturers and suppliers, reminds home and business owners to keep safety in mind when using generators this winter. “Not having power when you need it is frustrating, so a generator can provide emergency backup power at a reasonable cost,”says Kris Kiser, President and CEO of OPEI. “It’s important to follow all manufacturer’s instructions, and never place a generator in your garage or inside your home or building. It should be a safe distance from the structure and not near an air intake.” More tips include: #1 - Take stock of your generator. Make sure equipment is in good working order before starting and using it. Do this before a

storm hits. #2 – Review the directions. Follow all manufacturer’s instructions. Review the owner’s manuals (look manuals up online if you cannot find them) so equipment is operated safely. #3 - Install a battery operated carbon monoxide

detector in your home. This alarm will sound if dangerous levels of carbon monoxide enter the building. #4 - Have the right fuel on hand. Use the type of fuel recommended by the generator manufacturer to protect this important investment. It is illegal to use any fuel with more than 10% ethanol in outdoor power equipment. (For more information on proper fueling for outdoor power equipment visit www. LookBeforeYouPump.com). It’s best to use fresh fuel, but if you are using fuel that has been sitting in a gas can for more than 30 days, add fuel stabilizer to it. Store gas only in an approved container and away from heat sources. #5 - Ensure portable generators have plenty of ventilation. Generators should NEVER be used in an enclosed area or placed inside a home, a building, or a garage, even if the windows or doors are open. Place the generator outside and away from windows, doors, and vents that could allow carbon monoxide to drift indoors. #6 - Keep the generator dry. Do not use a generator in wet conditions. Cover and vent a generator. Model-specific tents or generator covers can be found online for purchase and at home centers and hardware stores. #7 - Only add fuel to a cool generator. Before refueling, turn the generator off and let it cool down.

DECEMBER 6, 2018 || townandcountrygazette.com

#8 -Plug in safely. If you don’t yet have a transfer switch, you can use the outlets on the generator. It’s best to plug in appliances directly to the generator. If you must use an extension cord, it should be heavy-duty and designed for outdoor use. It should be rated (in watts or amps) at least equal to the sum of the connected appliance loads. Make sure the cord is free of cuts, and the plug has all three prongs. #9 - Install a transfer switch. A transfer switch connects the generator to the circuit panel and lets you power hardwired appliances. Most transfer Continued on page 20

Snow Shoveling Safety Tips When the driveway and walkways are coated in a thick blanket of snow, it is time to get a shovel out for what some consider to be a dreaded chore. But before you tackle the first snowfall of the season, take some time to read these safety snow shoveling tips to help avoid any potential injuries. Snow shoveling can lead to a number of health risks for many people, from back injuries to heart attacks. The mix of cold temperatures and physical exertion increases the workload on the heart,¹ which may increase the risk of a heart attack for some. According to the American Heart Association, even walking through heavy, wet snow can place strain on your heart. The following tips can help keep you safer when you set out to shovel: • Warm up. Warm your muscles before heading out to shovel by doing some light movements, such as bending side to side or walking in place. • Push rather than lift. Pushing the snow with the shovel instead of lifting can help reduce the strain on your body. When lifting snow, bend your knees and use your legs when possible. • Choose your shovel wisely. Ergonomicallydesigned shovels can help reduce the amount of bending you have to do. • Lighten your load. Consider using a lighterweight plastic shovel instead of a metal one to help decrease the weight being lifted. • Hit the pause button. Pace yourself and be sure to take frequent breaks. Consider taking a break after 20 to 30 minutes of shoveling, especially when the snow is wet. • Consider multiple trips. Consider shoveling periodically throughout the storm to avoid having to move large amounts of snow at once. • Keep up with snowfall. Try to shovel snow shortly after it falls, when it is lighter and fluffier. The longer snow stays on the ground, the wetter it can become. Wet snow is heavier and harder to move.

• Wear layers. Dress in layers and remove them as you get warm to help maintain a comfortable body temperature. • Stay hydrated. Drink plenty of water to stay hydrated while shoveling. A national study found that the most common shoveling-related injuries were to the lower back. Cardiac-related injuries account for only 7% of all injuries, but they were the most serious in nature. If you do not exercise on a regular basis, are middleaged or older, or have any health conditions, such as heart disease or high blood pressure, you should check with your doctor before doing any strenuous shoveling. Consider using a snow blower or snow removal service as an alternative means of snow removal. Snow and Ice Removal Requirements Snow and ice not only pose a potential risk to you but also to others. As a property owner, you are responsible for making a reasonable effort to keep public walking areas around your property clear of snow and ice. Pre-treating your walkways and other paved surfaces with an anti-icing product can help make snow and ice removal easier. Consider stocking up on ice melt in advance, as it sometimes sells out during long winters. You can store unused ice melt in an airtight container, out of reach from children and pets. Be aware that rock salt can damage brick, stone, asphalt and concrete walkways. Be sure to check your local codes and ordinances regarding snow and ice removal requirements.

NCC Student Receives PPL Foundation STEM Scholarship

LAUGH OUT LOUD

submitted by Mia Rossi

In 2017, Northampton Community College was awarded a $25,000 grant from the foundation to create the PPL STEM Scholarship, which will provide scholarships for students in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) fields and careers critical to the needs of our community and workforce. PPL has provided additional grant support to the endowment, giving NCC the opportunity to provide more STEM students access to education. The scholarship is awarded to students from one of NCC's eight sponsoring school districts - Bangor Area, Bethlehem Area, Easton Area, Nazareth Area, Northampton Area, Pen Argyl Area, Saucon Valley, and Wilson Area. To date, the PPL grant has provided scholarships to three students. The most recent is former Northampton Area School District student, Kyle Morin, who is currently studying engineering at Northampton Community College. Morin, who made the baseball team at NCC and hopes to maintain his 4.0 GPA while here, says, "I want to thank PPL. This scholarship will help me greatly with the financial burden I will have at the end of my college education."

Touch of Dutch Continued from page 42

In tempest, storm and wind: And went to Bethlehem straightway The Son of God to find. Chorus 6. And when they came to Bethlehem Where our dear Saviour lay, They found Him in a manger, Where oxen feed on hay; His Mother Mary kneeling down, Unto the Lord did pray. Chorus 7. Now to the Lord sing praises, All you within this place, And with true love and brotherhood Each other now embrace; This holy tide of Christmas All other doth deface. Chorus [The rendition of the traditional English carol from which the Dutch is derived first appeared in Christmas Carols Ancient and Modern, by W. B. Sandys in 1833, and that English version is the one included above. The Dutch verses are derived from the first, second, third and fifth verses of that carol. While those verses may be different from the ones with which we are familiar, the refrain is from a later version of the carol with which most of us are familiar. (Sandys’ original chorus lines: O tidings of comfort and joy, For Jesus Christ, our Saviour, was born on Christmas day.) Since this is such an old carol (The earliest printed version appeared c 1760.), one can expect variations in the verses and chorus and even the title itself (Tidings of Comfort and Joy; Come All You Worthy Gentlemen; God Rest Ye, Merry Christians.), but the different interpretations of the meaning of “God rest ye merry, gentlemen”, are resolved by the etymology of the words “rest” and “merry” and the very placement of the comma in that phrase. “The word “rest” is used in “God Rest You Merry, Gentlemen” in a sense meaning “to keep,” “to continue to be” or “to remain as specified” (as in the phrase “rest assured”), not specifically in the sense of “to make.” Thus “God rest you merry, gentlemen” is not an importuning for God to make DECEMBER 6, 2018 || townandcountrygazette.com

the titular [existing or being such in title only; nominal] gentlemen mighty, but rather a prayer for God to keep joy in the hearts of men. “Finally, the idea that “God rest you merry” means “God make you mighty” is contrary to the lyrics of the song itself. The first line reads “God rest you merry, gentlemen, let nothing you dismay,” a context that poses the words “merry” and “dismay” as contrasts (i.e., one should remain merry rather than allowing himself to fall into a state of dismay). But “might” and “dismay” are words completely unrelated in either origin or meaning, and thus offering them as contrasting states makes no logical sense.“First of all,“God rest you merry, gentlemen” is correct, not “God rest you, merry gentlemen.”The verb “rest” is used here in the way now most familiar from the phrase “rest assured”. In earlier English it was used with a variety of other complements: the OED has “rest thee merry” from 1400; “rest you well” from 1420; “God rest you merry”, “rest you fair”, and “rest you happy”, and “rest myself content” from Shakespeare; “rest thee tranquil” from Shelley, and “rest thee sure” from Tennyson. “The song is now widely misunderstood as being addressed to “merry gentlemen”, first because this use of “rest” is now obsolete except in the phrases “rest assured” and “rest easy”, and secondly because the [melody now commonly used with these lyrics] supports that stress pattern.” Source: https://www.snopes.com/fact-check/ god-rest-ye-merry-gentlemen/ ] [Also, please note that some German grammar is used in the Dutch, most likely to keep the meter of the carol. That is true in the title, which can be translated as “May God keep you joyful, gentle folks.” It is also evident in the use of some verbs which end with ‘n’ rather than ‘e’ as in Dutch. Enjoy!]

Presentation of Daniel D. Jones Family Bible to The United Presbyterian Church, Slatington submitted by Janice Altrichter

During the November 4th worship service at The United Presbyterian Church, Slatington, the 1879 Family Bible of Daniel D. Jones was presented to the church by David D. Altrichter, local historian and former Mayor of Slatington. This family bible was recently entrusted to Mr. Altrichter by Barbara Williams Estate. The last descendant of Daniel D. Jones, Miss Williams passed away September 28, 2018. It was her wish that her family’s history be preserved for future generations. The Family Bible was given to the UPC since both Daniel D. and S. Jennie (Mott) Jones were active in the early Welsh Church in Slatington, where Jennie served as a teacher in the Welsh Church School. Jennie and Daniel were very active in the community and in the local church. Jennie was listed among the first teachers in the first public school in August, 1868. Daniel was the town’s first postmaster, planned the town’s layout, and named it. He owned a slate company, held various public offices, was an active Mason, and a life member of the Historical Society of Pennsylvania. He and his wife S. Jennie had six children. Both he and Jennie,

along with three of their children, are interred in Fairview Cemetery, Slatington. Following the presentation of the Family Bible, a Prayer of Dedication was offered.

Tips for Getting Your Kids Outside in the Wintertime from Lucky the TurfMutt submitted by Debbi Mayster

Parents and guardians may be tempted to dial back outdoor activities for kids when cold temperatures arrive, but playing outside is good for children, even in the wintertime. Lucky the TurfMutt, a rescue dog and the face of the TurfMutt environmental education and stewardship platform for kids in grades K-5, offers the following tips to help to make wintertime, learning playtime: Do winter activities that are fun. Weather that adults consider to be “messy” can be a huge canvas for children and their imaginations. Snow balls, snow forts and trees covered in snow offer a wealth of opportunities for children to explore and experiment in our living landscapes. Encourage exploration. Ask your child to look at how the landscape changes with the seasons. Talk about what happens after leaves fall, when snow arrives, when it’s windy, and more, linking these seasonable changes with basic science about clouds, rainfall, temperature changes and the earth. Play with them. Get outside in the winter with your children. It’s healthy for both kids and adults to move! Have a snowball fight, build a snow man or fort, or go sledding. Try something new. Try your hands at crosscountry skiing, igloo-building, winter hiking, ice fishing, ice skating, snow sculpting, snowshoeing, or something else that your children want to try to give them an appreciation of the outdoors in all seasons. Attend a community festival. There are many community festivals year-round, and winter festivals can be exceptionally fun and offer activities for kids. Mention how happy it can make them. Even winter sunshine can make kids happy! Literally. Sunlight boosts Vitamin D, which helps regulate emotional and mental moods by increasing serotonin in the brain. Even exposure to the weaker

sunlight in the winter can cause this happiness boost. Tolerate some mess. It’s a given that kids going outside in the snow will often return wet, muddy and messy. Be prepared for wet and cold kids and get them warmed up when they return from playing outside. Process what they did. Ask kids to share about what they did outdoors. You can ask them to talk, write, or draw out their activities and observations. Did they observe something new? Did something surprise them? What was fun?
