From the Publisher’s Desk
Joe Korba Weddings, man. Planning a wedding is hard—I know because I watched my (now) wife do it. I mean, I helped where I could, but as fun as they are, a lot of work goes into making them happen. But there are a ton of great resources and businesses in our area; I used many of them myself back in October 2014. Make sure to frequent your local businesses if you are in wedding-planning mode. Small businesses are what make our economy run and, frankly, they often do better work than the big national chains. As always, I hope you all enjoy this issue and are weathering our current cold snap well. Thanks for reading! BL U E MO U N TA IN

Miller Blood Drive In Palmerton March 4
Submitted by GEORGE ASHMAN Miller-Keystone Blood Center's next Palmerton community blood drive will be Friday, March 4 from 11:30 a.m. until 6:30 p.m. at the First United Church of Christ next to Palmerton Boro Hall. Please note the later closing hour—we hope to accommodate more commuters. Anyone over 17, weighing at least 110 pounds, and who has not donated since January 8 is eligible. The Palmerton area is fortunate to have a number of "regulars" who donate nearly every time, but needs additional occasional donors to meet our goals. Previous Miller donors, please bring your Miller ID card. First-time donors will need photo ID, such as a driver's license. For more information or to make an appointment, call George Ashman at 610-826-2097 or email gashman@ptd.net. Walk-ins are also welcome.

Meet The Staff
Destination weddings are all the rage. If there was one place, real or fictional, where you could have spent your special day (or could someday hope to have it, for those of us yet unmarried), where would it be and why? Joe Korba, Associate Publisher
I’m happy that we chose to get married locally so all of our family and friends could attend, but I think if we were going to do a destination wedding, it would almost certainly have been on a Caribbean beach. Grand Cayman, perhaps?
Danielle Tepper, Editor
I don’t actually think I have one. I do know that I want to get married outside in a place that holds special meaning for my husband and I. Beach weddings (pictured) look gorgeous— but so do city weddings, to be honest. And I have a deep soft spot for both, so we shall see! (In a fantasy world, however, I’m sure the Hogwarts castle would make one hell of a backdrop!)
Christine Stroh, Account Executive
The idea of a romantic getaway to some exotic location with pristine beaches, crystal clear water, and lush greenery, or even a quaint cottage among historic architecture, sounds wonderful to me as the vacation to beat all ... but I'll keep my candlelit wedding in my hometown at the same church my mother, my aunt, and even my daughter had theirs.
Catherine Stroh, Publishing Assistant
As always, I cannot decide between two locations, the Maldives (pictured) or Iceland. Both are incredibly beautiful for obviously different reasons. Either location would be a dream come true—a very expensive dream come true!
Tony Pisco, Art Director
I’m going to pick the Cloud City of Bespin from Star Wars ep. 5, The Empire Strikes Back. Very pretty backdrop, plus Lobot would be there to take care of any problems that might arise. I would just need to make sure Emily didn’t run into Lando—that guy is way more charming then I am.
I’d choose a remote destination of St. Thomas or Jamaica, on one of many beautiful beaches—I’ve been to both locations and they are the most relaxed places I have ever been.

Free Amateur Radio Classes Submitted by BOB GREEN What is amateur radio, and what do you do with it? Amateur radio is a fun hobby where you can talk with people across town or all over the world, even with astronauts in space, without telephone wires, cell phones or the Internet. It provides helpful communication service in emergencies, public service and community events. Amateur radio operators come from all walks of life, from all ages, men and women, students and retirees, factory workers and doctors, and all in between. We all have one thing in common: ham radio. We can tinker and experiment and build things. We can help with communications at parades and other community events. We send health and welfare messages in times of disaster; sometimes we are the only communications available. We can compete in radio contests, and we can have casual conversations with other hams worldwide. To do all this, you need a license and a radio. Delaware-Lehigh Amateur Radio Club will offer a series of nine Tuesday evening free classes from 7 to 9 p.m., beginning March 8 at the Northampton County Gracedale Complex in Nazareth. We will

For answers to questions, more information, or to register for the free classes, please call 610-4328286 or email ke3aw@ARRL.net. Individuals with types O, AB, B negative and A negative blood are especially needed.

Happy 100th Birthday, Kathryn Kemmerer
Submitted by TAMMY ZANGARI Born February 18, 1916 and raised in what was once known as Jonestown (a small village between Slatington and Emerald), Kathryn married Reuben Kemmerer and raised four children, Bobby Kemmerer, Buddy Kemmerer, Janet Kemmerer LeVan, and Betty Lou Kemmerer Rauch, in Slatington. She has nine grandchildren, 25 great-grandchildren, and 14 great-great-grandchildren. She now lives with her daughter and son-inlaw, Betty Lou and Louie Rauch in Okeechobee, Florida. We had wonderful times together at the cabin at Lake Wallenpaupack and we all loved her famous chocolate cake. Some of the clan will be traveling to Florida to celebrate her special day with her, but for those of us who can’t, we wish this amazing woman, our “Nana Kemmerer,” the best birthday! Love from your hometown.

Storing bird seed can invite unwanted bugs and into your storage container and garage. Here’s an old idea for a pesky problem: Pour 5-6 inches of bird seed into your container and place one bay leaf on top. Continue with 5-6 inches and a bay leaf until you have your container filled. Finish off with 3-4 bay leaves before replacing the lid. You can reuse the bay leaves until they become brittle, then replace. Everybody Walk Across PA 2016
Submitted by KELLY BOND Penn State Extension will once again be taking a virtual walk—this time learning about and enjoying the wonderful Rails to Trails in Pennsylvania. There is truly something for everyone in this diverse and beautiful collection of walking and biking trails. Gather your family and friends or co-workers to form a team of up to five. Team members will try to average walking or exercising ten miles per week to meet the goal of Everybody Walk Across PA. Walk with your team or on your own at a time and place convenient for you. We will virtually be visiting the Rails to Trails; you do not have to walk there. Of course if they are convenient for you, what a wonderful place to walk. Team captains will report the mileage for their team each week. Everyone will receive weekly email updates on the progress as we virtually visit the many trails. Each week will bring a new trail from a different area of the state. Weekly emails will include motivators to keep walking, and strategies for eating more fruits and vegetables. All of this will keep everyone moving toward a healthier lifestyle. The program will run April 4 through May
29. It’s free, but registration is required by April 1. Register or learn more about this event at http:// extension.psu.edu/health/walk-across-pa or contact Karen Bracey at 570-836-3196 or kbracey@ psu.edu. Moderate activity such as walking reduces stress and fatigue and increases mental alertness. It improves cardiovascular functioning and strengthens bones. Combined with healthy eating, it can help to reduce or maintain body weight and decrease incidence of certain chronic diseases. Spring is a great time to get outside and be more active and eight weeks can help turn those healthy behaviors into healthy habits. Take the first step and join in Everybody Walk Across PA! Individuals with all levels of physical ability are encouraged Continued on Page 19

perfectly, the characters and setting and everything fell into place, I was hoping for something a bit creepier. Not to judge, but the cover and title and premise suggest a bigger creep factor than what actually happened. It was all pretty tame. Gillian Flynn has ruined me; I needed something more disturbing. Tiny Animals On Safari
HelloDenizen has done it again. The folks that brought us “Tiny Hamsters” doing just about anything (going to Disney World, hosting tiny BBQs, going on tiny dates, and of course, eating tiny burritos) are back with even more of their fuzzy friends. Some of the most patient pets around are making themselves at home in the African wilderness. A bunny (with bunny-sized binoculars!) is on the lookout for his giraffe and rhino pals. See the bunny photographing guinea pigs posing as elephants—two little lion-pigs even savagely eat a zebra! Once again, it’s creativity abound over on this YouTube channel and you can watch the full video for yourself by visiting www.youtube.com/watch?v=PmODx14ugc.
Rescue Pet Meet Frankie
“My name is Frankie. I’m a New Zealand mix bunny. I am a very active and friendly little guy. Actually, I am quite a character! My pictures don’t do me justice. I am told I am much cuter in person. I am approximately six months old. I run and play and have incredible balancing and jumping skills. You will enjoy watching me play. I love people and will let you pick me up. My tunnel is my favorite play thing, but I like my wooden hut and boxes and all of my toys. I love my veggies and hay. I am already neutered and I am doing very well with my litter training. If you are interested in meeting me, please email diane924m@ aol.com to set up a date and time.” [www.petfinder. com/petdetail/34388853]

Five Favorite Wedding Movies
For our bridal issue, I knew it was time to explore another trope of romance cinematography: weddings. Whether it’s the central focus of the plot or just a sweet scene in a saccharine will-they-orwon’t-they story, they’re abundant and extravagant across the board, cropping up in a vast number of films. When I started to compile a list, I realized how prevalent they are in quite a few of my favorite movies. Here’s just a small handful (and some honorable mentions). Enjoy!
in 2009 and remained our favorite when we saw it again, just this past summer before it ended its 14-year run on the Great White Way. ABBA’s upbeat songs set the tone for a story of a young brideto-be searching for her father against a stunning Greek backdrop, which ensured a beautiful cinematic version. Then throw Meryl Streep in as your lead―SOLD. I love this movie. It’s just so much fun and I always have an urge to watch it before I go on vacation to somewhere tropical.
2. My Big Fat Greek Wedding (2002)
1. Mamma Mia! (2008) I’ve seen this flick so many times that I can quote it backwards and forwards. Written by its Greek star, Nia Vardalos, it’s one of very few existing film depictions of Greek life and it is hilarious. Did you know that the root of a word, any word, is Greek? Or that Windex can cure anything from the common cold to poison ivy? Or that the Greeks invented astronomy, philosophy, democracy, and pottery? (And film-making, probably.) It’s full of so many unique and ridiculous moments and it’s always a good time. Just reading the title gets the song stuck in my head. (“Just one look and I can hear a bell ring!”) As a huge theater nerd, I love all the stage-to-film Broadway musical adaptations. While Hairspray and Rent are very high on my list, this one is my absolute favorite. It was our favorite show when we saw it our first time back
3. Father of the Bride (1991)
Steve Martin can do no wrong, can he? From freaking out over the ever-growing bill to going head-to-head with wedding planner Martin Short (in what is arguably one of his best roles), Steve paints George Banks as a stiff and unbearable cheapskate,
townandcountrygazette.com | February 18, 2016
but by the film’s end, we know it’s just because he’s desperately trying to hang on to his little girl. It’s a really sweet movie, but truth be told, I prefer the sequel. So much funnier!
Page 33
5. The Wedding Planner (2001)
4. 27 Dresses (2008)
One of Katherine Heigl’s least terrible romcoms, mainly because of James Marsden’s portrayal of a “wounded, mysterious, and sexy” cynic who manages to write beautiful words about weddings for the fictional New York Journal. Watching the man you love fall for your younger sister, who has basically had things handed to her all her life, is a really sympathetic plot twist which is why it’s not a complete hate-watch situation. That and a really fun musical n u m b e r m i d w a y through set to “Bennie and the J e t s . ” And being always, always, always a bridesmaid makes for a pretty cute scene where all the dresses are put on display. Bonus points for the beach wedding.
J.Lo’s first official rom-com paired her with alright-alright-alright Matthew McConaughey for a rather predictable, though no less enjoyable, flick where she, as the wedding planner, *GASP* falls for the groom. For every eye-rolling moment, there are also those that make me smile anyway (like the whole scene with the statue and his “I know every fleck of gold in your eyes” speech). I think of it every time I eat brown M&Ms, so something stuck. And for me, it also has the added bonus of a pre-Grey’s Justin Chambers trying to woo the leading lady and his puppy dog eyes always look so desperate that it hurts my heart a little.
Honorable Mentions
I may have managed to pick five out of many, but I left a lot of my favorites behind, including but not limited to: American Wedding, Bridesmaids, Letters to Juliet, License to Wed, Made of Honor, My Best Friend’s Wedding, Runaway Bride, Sweet Home Alabama, A Walk to Remember, Wedding Crashers ... and the list goes on ...

Slate Heritage Trail History Submitted by JIM LAYLAND A 3.3 mile rails to trail project was initiated by a committee of the Northern Lehigh Historical Society, Inc. in April 2001. The Slate Heritage Trail utilizes, as much as possible, the former Lehigh Valley Railroad right-of-way from a junction with the D&L Heritage Trail in lower Slatington, through Emerald to the Slatedale Fire Company's baseball fields. The Trail is currently closed between the Emerald bridge over Trout Creek and Center St. in Emerald due to the PA Turnpike bridge construction project. The closed portion of the Trail will be reconstructed after the completion of the new turnpike bridges. The former rail line, opened in 1870 by the Lehigh Valley Railroad and known as the Slatedale Branch, ran from a junction in Slatington with the Lehigh Valley mainline to a western terminus a short distance west of the point where County Bridge Road crosses Trout Creek. The primary commodities hauled on the line were finished slate products from the burgeoning slate quarrying operations in the Northern Lehigh area. In 1874, the Reading Railroad extended their line through northern Lehigh County and linked with the Lehigh Valley Railroad at Franklin (now Emerald) at a point denoted as Little Run Junction. The Reading obtained trackage rights from the Lehigh Valley over the Slatedale branch into Slatington. The Reading passenger trains operating into Slatington became known as the “Berksy” railroad. The Lehigh Valley Railroad abandoned the Slatedale Branch in 1949 causing the Reading to cut back their tracks to Best Station. A local slate quarry operator purchased the Lehigh Valley right-of-way and kept the line open between the mainline junction and the National School Slate factory at Seventh St. The Slate Heritage Trail is a community project, locally initiated and planned by volunteers interested in the improvement of the Northern Lehigh area, and the preservation of the natural 4571 CLOVER HILL CIRCLE SERVING THE GREATER LEHIGH VALLEY

and historic resources for the benefit of all families in the region. The trail opened up an area of the Northern Lehigh community containing hidden natural beauty and historic significance. Strolling, hiking, jogging, bicycling, fishing and bird watching along scenic Trout Creek are just some of the activities that provide fun and recreation for area families and visitors to the Lehigh Valley. The Northern Lehigh Historical Society meets on the last Wednesday of the month at Slatington Borough Hall at 7 p.m. The meetings are held in conjunction with the Venture Group’s planning meeting for The Gathering and other community projects. Touch of Dutch Submitted by LARRY GRADWOHL
- Herman E. Wright

What they done we are not able to measure, Because much is already completely forgotten; We have people out there concerned And help us remember those people. I know about such a one, this you do also, In the first place, a busy housewife; Five days a week she teaches school, Continued on Page 39

Touch of Dutch Continued from Page 38 To do all this one must do [be at] his best. But this is not all, she does yet much more, She doesn’t rest, she is always on the go; She looks for and collects forgotten items, and then makes [us] appreciate them. She can write well in our Dutch dialect, She helps our Dialect to stay alive; Her weekly column in the Dialect Is appreciated and highly pleasing. With what we [already] said, how can she do this? But there is still more to it, Russel takes pictures of Dutch folk life; And she goes along to help plan and lay them out. At the [Kutztown] Folk Festival she is a leader, And has other women for her helpers; There she explains things to thousands of people, For her that is a very joyful time. About whom are we speaking? Who can this be? To accomplish all this and not be vain? You know who this is, she is well known to you, This is the ‘chatterbox’, we don’t need to name her. [Herman E. Wright, a president of the Fereinicht Pennsylfawnish Deitsch Folk, Inc. (United or unified PA Dutch people) in the 1960’s, did not need to name Florence Baver outright in this poem, which honored her for her life’s work of preserving the culture, dialect and history of the Dutch. She and her husband, Russel, who was likewise committed to the same cause, were very actively involved in many organizations like Fereinicht Folk. Not only were the Bavers active member of many Dutch groups and also historical societies, they were instrumental in founding two groups: Es Fersommle Fesht on der Bushkill ( The Dutch banquet( gathering) by the Bushkill Creek) and the Pa. Dutch Folk Culture Society, Inc. at Lenhartsville. This latter group was founded in 1965 and focused on acquiring, preserving and displaying artifact and antiques from rural PA German life including farming implements. In
Page 39
1992 the Dutch Folk Culture Society voted to turn over their collection of more than 10,000 artifacts and also the building they owned to the newly formed PA German Heritage Center at Kutztown University. Like the group at Lenhartsville, Es Fersommle Fesht on der Bushkill, focused on preserving the culture and Dialect of the Dutch. They were organized in 1952 and continued to have an annual banquet at the social halls of local fire companies in Tatamy, Stockertown and Allen Township. They kept that tradition alive for almost 60 years before they went inactive. Around the same time that Florence helped organize the Bushkill group, she started her weekly Dialect column in the Nazareth Item under the title, Es Bobbelmoul Schreibt (The chatterbox writes). Her articles from that paper are the basis for many of my ‘Touch of Dutch’ pieces, since she wrote in good traditional Dutch and she labored so long to preserve the heritage of rural farming life for so many of us. Wright identified her in his poem by listing her many accomplishments and lastly by using her own penname, ‘Es Bobbelmoul’.]
