Greetings Fellow Seniors By John Hall, Blue Mountain Town & Country Gazette
Being a bit of a senior myself, I found the assembling of the senior-related content in this issue to be quite personally of interest. Perhaps like some of you, my joints are a little more stiff than they used to be and I might have a slight delay in calling you by name when we run into 255E South Best Ave. Walnutport, PA 18088

each other, but my goodness in the meantime, “you look great!” All kidding aside (and I’ll have to go back and see if there actually was any kidding in that first paragraph), this issue has some really good perspective for all of us with one or both feet in the “senior zone” of life. We take a good look at how to keep the senior mind sharp – it’s not that hard really it’s about stretching the brain in new directions and maybe trying some things a little differently. Keeping the mind sharp leads into our other article on “10 tips to age beautifully” where the skin, diet and exercise are all part of it. Also for those who may need to create a “seniorfriendly” home to allow aging in place, either for themselves or a loved one, we give you some really good tips, courtesy of SeniorLiving.com.

There is a lot of content in this issue that focuses on senior health. One piece looks at why you should literally brush your teeth for a longer life. The connection between poor dental hygiene and health is proven to be associated with major health issues any of us should want to avoid if we can. We also have a pretty extensive article on “chair yoga” for seniors. With a lot of us being stuck at home due to the pandemic, age or winter, staying active is more important than ever. You want to avoid being sedentary – it’s not the way to go. That’s where chair yoga comes in – it’s a very accessible and easy way to keep movement in your life at this point in time. So be sure and read “Chair Yoga for Seniors” where you’ll get the detailed “how to” on five different chair yoga positions. And lastly we take a look at two more serious issues, seniors and opioid use or more specifically, opioid use disorder, and some positive COVID-19 vaccine updates. So there’s a lot in the issue focused on senior health and senior living. We hope you find it informative and enjoyable. Until next time, stay happy, healthy and active!

Just see how delicate and light, One flake certainly has no weight – Put together far more finely Than a poet’s poem. One can just not express all The splendor, so wonderful; I don’t care how one tries – The words are too scarce.
They fall right out of heaven, Like feathers – oh so softly; And covers our sleeping earth Like a quilt, clean and white. And [if] they fall in a storm, just see How one ‘fits’ into another, Until soon one certainly has Accumulated a large heap here. The branches of trees are lined with snow, Just as the roof of the house; In the moonlight, everything covered white, Makes it look spooky outside. The flakes are not for unnecessariness; They have their work to do also – For winter wheat they provide a cover, That frost cannot get at it good.
Call today and feel good again!

With cheerful bells, on a good path – To slide over the snow. I often wondered what The number of flakes would be In that snowman out in the yard – It would certainly be a heap of them. They can be reckless when it appears That wind comes behind them, And blows them here and there on the land Into banks, then they are jumped – For shoveling feed – going to the barn, To the stall, and all around the house; They are now no longer nearly so light – Am happy when not outside. Yet one looks at them also in wonder, How they fall so quietly, And cover the dirt and piggishness Made by men here. There is much one never learns here, (And would we yet be so smart,) How everything works in nature –
Has purpose and its time. [I don’t know why I would feature an article about snow after all that shoveling and plowing we have done recently, but at least Ralph Funk had a much more positive take on it. Enjoy his poem, and stay safe!]

Keep Your Senior Mind Sharp SOURCE: Various
Everyone has the occasional "senior moment." Maybe you've gone into the kitchen and can't remember why, or can't recall a familiar name during a conversation. But when significant memory loss occurs among older people, it is generally not due to aging but to organic disorders, brain injury, or neurological illness. Studies have shown that you can help prevent the aging of the mind and reduce the risk of dementia with some basic good health habits: • Staying physically active • Getting enough sleep • Not smoking • Having good social connections • Limiting alcohol to no more than one drink a day • Eating a nutritious, heart-healthy diet Memory and other cognitive changes can be frustrating, but the good news is that, thanks to decades of research, you can learn how to get your mind active. Here are some strategies and tips you
can use to help maintain your mental fitness: Keep Learning / Challenging your brain with mental exercise is believed to activate processes that help maintain individual brain cells and stimulate communication among them. Many people have jobs that keep them mentally active. Pursuing a hobby, learning a new skill, volunteering or mentoring are additional ways to keep your mind sharp. Mix Things Up / Researchers at Duke University created exercises they call “neurobics,” which challenge your brain to think in new ways. For example, if you’re right-handed, try using your left hand, or close your eyes and see if you can recognize food by taste alone. Repeat and Repeat / When you want to remember something you've just heard, read, or thought about, repeat it out loud or write it down. That way, you reinforce the memory or connection. For example, if you've just been told someone's name, use it in the conversation: "So, John, where did you meet Camille?" Exercise / Exercise, especially the kind that gets your heart rate up like walking or swimming, has mental pluses, too. Physical activity increases the Continued on page 14

blood supply to the brain and improves links between brain cells. Chemicals called endorphins are released after exercise and improve your mood, and have been found to help memory, imagination and the ability to plan tasks.
Video Games Sharpen Your Brain / Several studies have found that playing video games stimulates the parts of the brain that control movement, m e m o r y, planning, and fine motor skills. Plus, it’s fun. Make Friends / Be a people person. Talking with others actually sharpens your brain. Studies show social activities improve your mind whether at work, home or in your community. So volunteer – even doing phone coordination of projects for an organization (in this pandemic era). Memory Helpers / Here are some tips to help you remember and plan activities: • Write things down. • Use the calendar and reminder functions in your phone, even for simple things. • Focus on one task at a time. • Learn new things one step at a time.

10 Tips to Age Beautifully (edited) SOURCE: aging.com
Aging is inescapable but it is also a glorious thing. You have done the work, you have learned many of life’s lessons and now you can enjoy life without all that youthful angst and uncertainty. So, why not age beautifully and maybe get back that natural glow? Some tips: Use Sunscreen / While the sun nourishes us with vitamin D, it also has harmful ultraviolet rays. It is advisable to apply sunscreen generously before going out and wear sunglasses and a hat to protect your skin. Regular moisturizing will also do wonders for your skin’s smoothness and elasticity. Reduce Wrinkles / Retinol is a derivative of vitamin A that most dermatologists recommend because of its anti-aging effects. It increases the production of collagen which prevents fine lines. It is also responsible for the development of new blood vessels leading to healthy skin. Exercise / The benefits of exercise include the production of the feel-good hormones endorphins

that make us happier and improve our energy levels. Exercise is also great for the skin because it increases blood flow to the skin cells that carries cellular waste products away in the process. Exercise also builds muscle of course, and reverses the bone loss that occurs when we age, straightening up the posture. Watch Your Diet / A diet rich in fruits, vegetables, lean protein, whole grains and low in sugar is highly advisable. Also, according to one study, taking a certain prescribed amount of vitamin D and calcium daily for postmenopausal women helps reduce the bone loss rate by almost half. Continued on page 16

Avoid Cigarettes / According to a report by the Mayo Clinic, smoking significantly speeds up the aging process. The chemicals infused in cigarettes have been known to damage the skin fiber, collagen and reduce the skin’s elasticity. Maintain A Positive Attitude / According to the Journal of the American Medical Association, seniors who view aging positively (wisdom and overall satisfaction) are 40 percent more likely to recover from a disability than those who see it as synonymous with helplessness. embrace getting older and appreciate its positive aspects, the happier you are and the younger you look. Revise Your Style / Sometimes it’s difficult to let go of a style of hair or dressing that has always worked for you, but trying out new styles may surprise you and make you feel younger. Visit Your Dentist / Over time our teeth discolor due to wine stains, coffee, tea or smoking. A visit to your dentist will have your teeth whiter and looking great in no time. It is advisable to go for a dental check-up twice a year, as well as brush regularly and floss. Get Enough Sleep / Sleeping poorly will not only show visible signs of aging on your face, but it will also make you perceive yourself as being less attractive. When you sleep, your body releases a hormone that aids in growth, which in turn restores collagen and elastin, part of the essential building blocks of young, glowing skin. Drink Plenty Of Water / Drinking plenty of water daily nourishes the skin by keeping it moist. Water also keeps your nails and hair looking healthy and aids in smooth digestion. When combined with herbal teas it helps flush toxins out of the body leaving you feeling reenergized.

Creating a SeniorFriendly Home (edited) SOURCE: seniorliving.com
There are many changes to consider when you're updating a home to be senior friendly. Here are some practical ideas we found at SeniorLiving. com for making a home suitable for aging in place – whether for yourself or a loved one. The Safe Entryway • Add non-slip flooring in the entryway inside the home. • Outside the home, add non-slip strips or scuff the surface to create improved footing. • Repair uneven or cracked areas on the entry walkway. • If the entryway must have stairs, install rails at least one-and-a-half inches in diameter (to accommodate aging grips) on both sides. • Increase stair visibility by using contrast strips on the top and bottom stairs and color contrast the treads and risers. Multitasking is a recipe for disaster. Create an area for bundles and packages both inside and
18
outside the home to keep senior hands free and balance steady. Have at least one covered entryway protected from the elements and increase lighting at all entries with motion-sensor lights focused on ramps and stairs, and lighting pointed at the front and back door locks. Kitchen and Pantry Accessibility In the kitchen you want to prevent bending and crouching by the senior. Use kitchen appliances with easy-to-read controls and simple-to-use pushbutton interfaces. Consider converting to a wall oven or an oven with a side-swing door. This provides easy oven access so seniors don't need to lift heavy items over the hot door. An open shelving design in the pantry creates easier access, and glass cabinet doors help seniors identify items without effort. Lazy Susans and rollout trays also increase accessibility. Safe, Accessible Bathrooms Creating a safe and accessible bathroom will help keep your loved one independent and protected. Many slips and falls happen in the bathroom and shower. Add slip-prevention flooring throughout the bathroom and shower area. Non-skid bath mats, non-slip strips in the bath and shower, and bathmats secured with nonslip rug tape all work. Well placed grab bars in the shower, tub and next to the toilet are very effective in helping to prevent falls. Be certain they are securely attached to the wall and can support 250-300 pounds. Avoid diagonal bars, which can create hand slippage – particularly when the hand is wet – and may increase the risk of falls. For many seniors, standing in the slippery shower is risky. Consider adding a fold-down seat or bench in the shower. Also, install a hand-held shower head with a six-foot hose to direct the water where it’s needed even while seated. In terms of lighting, home builders design showers for younger eyes, so consider adding extra lighting in the shower stall for the senior user. By following these simple tips the aging-in-place redesign and experience will be greatly improved, with less worry and more safety. News@TownAndCountryGazette.com || FEBRUARY 18, 2021

Regular exercise and physical activity are important to the physical and mental health of almost everyone, including older adults. Being physically active can help you continue to do the things you enjoy and stay independent as you age. Regular physical activity over long periods of time can produce long-term health benefits. That's why health experts say that older adults should be active every day to maintain their health. In addition, regular exercise and physical activity can reduce the risk of developing some diseases and disabilities that develop as people grow older. In some cases, exercise is an effective treatment for many chronic conditions. For example, studies show that people with arthritis, heart disease, or diabetes benefit from regular exercise. Exercise also helps people with high blood pressure, balance problems, or difficulty walking. One of the great things about physical activity is that there are so many ways to be active. For example, you can be active in short spurts throughout the day, or you can set aside specific times of the day on specific days of the week to exercise. As always, consult your doctor before beginning any exercise program. News@TownAndCountryGazette.com || FEBRUARY 18, 2021
Seniors and Opioid Use Disorder SOURCE: theconsumervoice.org
Opioid use disorder can affect people of all types and ages. Older adults are among the groups affected by this problem because they often use prescription opioids to cope with painful chronic conditions, such as arthritis, or procedures such as surgery. As a result of chronic pain, older adults may use prescription opioids for a long time, which presents a risk for developing an opioid use disorder. In addition, as people age, medications affect them more strongly and are slower to leave their systems so the side effects of opioids can be severe. Among the risks that older adults who use opioids face are death, hospitalization and use of emergency departments. Education and Treatment Resources There are helpful resources available to older adults who need to learn more about opioid use, seek to reduce or eliminate use of the medications, Continued on page 26

may also have access to treatments for the disorders and to non-opioid treatments for pain through the Veterans Health Administration. Prescription Misuse Older adults, like people of any age, are at risk of misusing prescription opioids and acquiring an opioid use disorder. Older adults are likely to receive prescriptions for opioids due to chronic, painful conditions that often accompany age. When this population uses opioids, they may experience particularly severe side effects because bodily processes generally slow with age. Fortunately, there are proven alternatives to opioids for pain relief.

Chair Yoga for Seniors (excerpt) SOURCE: seniorlifestyle.com
You may find the full article with 10 chair yoga positions and instructions for seniors at www. townandcountrygazette.com. As we age, we need to adjust our habits and lifestyles to thrive. Joint pain, achy muscles, fatigue, and other common age-related ailments can make exercise more difficult. Fortunately, chair yoga is an accessible and affordable style of exercise with incredible benefits for older adults including: • Improves flexibility • Stress reduction • Improves pain management • Improves circulation • Low impact on joints • Combats depression and anxiety • Improves balance • Promotes independence and wellbeing Though chair yoga is a low-risk and low-impact form of exercise, you should make sure you have the right equipment to prevent injuries and get the most out of your workout. Some essential chair

yoga equipment includes: • An armless, stable chair (no wobbling!) • A flat, level surface for your chair • Flexible, comfortable clothing that isn’t too tight or baggy • Space to fully extend your limbs • An experienced instructor or friend for safety If you are new to chair yoga or concerned about your readiness for exercise, please consult with a physician or chair yoga expert before jumping in. Here are five chair yoga positions for seniors that you can try with a friend or expert if you’re new, or alone if you’re confident in your abilities.
1. Overhead Stretch Begin in a seated position, facing forward with your arms down by your sides. Take a long, deep breath in and slowly stretch your arms upward to the ceiling. Hold this position for a moment, and bring your arms back downward with a long

exhale. Throughout this exercise, make sure your core is engaged and your back is as straight as possible.
2. Neck Stretch Sit up straight in your chair, and do not let your back touch the back of your chair. Extend your neck slowly upward so you feel the crown of your head rising towards the ceiling. While holding the base of your chair with your right hand, slowly reach upwards with your left hand to hold your left temple. Take a deep breath, and upon exhalation, gently dip your left ear towards your left shoulder without bending your back or raising your right shoulder. Take several slow breaths in and out in this position, before alternating this stretch to the opposite side.
3. Reverse arm hold Begin this pose in a seated position with your back straight and apart from the back of the chair. While you inhale deeply, reach your arms straight out to your sides at a low and wide angle. Exhale slowly and reach your hands behind your back, bending your elbows slightly. Arch your back slightly to feel the stretch in your shoulders, and take several breaths in and out.
4. Chair pigeon Sit upright with your back away from the back of the chair and facing forward. Gently raise your left ankle to rest on top of your right knee or thigh. If you have trouble bringing your ankle to your knee, feel free to use your hand to assist. Inhale deeply, flex your left foot slightly, and bend forward upon exhale. After several deep breaths in the forward position, return to sitting up straight. Gently switch sides, so your right ankle is resting upon your left thigh or knee, and repeat the above steps.
5. Seated forward bend Begin this exercise sitting up straight with your knees touching and your feet on the floor. Take a deep breath in. Upon exhaling, slowly bend forward, feeling your back extend one vertebrae at a time. Lean forward as far as you can without feeling strain or discomfort. Hold this position for several deep breaths before returning to an upright position. Give these exercises a try and then visit www. townandcountrygazette.com for the full story with a total of ten chair yoga exercises for seniors. Stay active!

COVID-19 Vaccine Updates
SOURCE: CNN.com
According to a report from CNN quoting the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, people who have been fully vaccinated against coronavirus – meaning they have received two doses of either the Pfizer/BioNTech or Moderna vaccine – can skip quarantine if they are exposed to someone infected with the virus. “Fully vaccinated persons who meet the criteria will no longer be required to quarantine following an exposure to someone with COVID-19,” the CDC said in updates to its webpage with guidance on vaccination. The Criteria / The person must be fully vaccinated – having had both shots with at least two weeks having passed since the second shot. The CDC says protection may wear off after three months, so people who had their last shot three months ago or more should quarantine if they are exposed. They also should quarantine if they show symptoms. People who have been vaccinated should still watch for symptoms for 14 days after they have been exposed to someone who is infected, the CDC adds.
“At this time, vaccinated persons should continue to follow current guidance to protect themselves and others, including wearing a mask, staying at least 6 feet away from others, avoiding crowds, avoiding poorly ventilated spaces, covering coughs and sneezes, washing hands often, following CDC travel guidance, and following any applicable workplace or school guidance, including guidance related to personal protective equipment use or SARS-CoV-2 testing,” the agency said. Other Vaccine News Johnson & Johnson’s single-dose COVID-19 vaccine candidate looks promising based on initial results from the ongoing trial published in the New England Journal of Medicine. The study found that the vaccine candidate was “generally well tolerated” in all study participants. Johnson & Johnson has now applied to the FDA for an “emergency use authorization,” as was done by Pfizer/BioNTech and Moderna for their vaccines that are now in use.

Brush Your Teeth for Longer Life SOURCE: seniorliving.com
It’s the development of the simplest habits that have the greatest impact on our long-term health. Exercising, eating a nutritious diet, getting enough sleep and rituals to eliminate stress are recognized as key routines that we should practice to optimize our chances to live a long, healthy life. But there is one health routine that is often neglected that may have the greatest impact of all: Brushing your teeth. In a new book, author Angie Stone highlights five causes of death that are promoted by periodontal disease, which in turn is a product of poor oral hygiene: Heart Disease / Research has indicated that periodontal disease increases the risk of heart disease. Scientists believe that inflammation caused by periodontal disease may be responsible. The development of periodontal disease can also worsen existing heart conditions. Stroke / Additional studies have pointed to a relationship between periodontal disease and stroke. Diabetes / People with periodontal disease are more likely to develop diabetes. Also, people with diabetes and periodontal disease may have more trouble controlling their blood sugar than diabetic patients with healthy gums. Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease / Research has shown those with periodontal disease have a 60 percent higher likelihood of developing COPD than those without periodontal disease. Dementia / Oral bacteria in the mouth due to FEBRUARY 18, 2021 || townandcountrygazette.com
poor dental hygiene have been linked to brain tissue deterioration. The author’s main focus is on nursing home residents, who are most often dependent on others to keep their teeth clean, but there’s a valuable lesson here for all seniors. "The elderly have increased risk factors for heart disease, stroke, diabetes, COPD, aspiration pneumonia, and thrush. The lack of adequate oral care increases these risks significantly,” says Stone. The culprit is oropharyngeal bacteria. These bacteria can be controlled through daily brushing and between-the-teeth cleaning. But poor dental habits can lead to this bacteria “wreaking havoc,” and leading to serious illness or premature death. Stone says the greatest risk of dying from dirty teeth comes when the bacteria in the mouth get aspirated into the lungs and the person contracts aspiration pneumonia. It’s not too late to develop better oral hygiene habits and improve your chances of living a longer, healthier life. And it all starts with brushing your teeth – and a trip to the dentist.

February Is National Pet Dental Health Month www.dogtime.com
Dental disease is more than just a cosmetic issue. When your canine companion or feline friend has red gums, yellow teeth, and stinky breath, it could be a sign of serious oral disease that could, if left untreated, lead to devastating affects on your pet’s quality of life. Neglecting your pet’s teeth and gums can cause chronic pain issues that may even be at the center of certain behavioral problems. The American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA) reports 80 percent of dogs and 70 percent of cats have some kind of oral disease by the age of three. It’s one of the most common problems faced by our four-legged family members. Take this month to check your pet’s oral health, and make sure you know how to care for their teeth. National Pet Dental Health Month is the perfect time to call your veterinarian and schedule a dental check up for your furry family members. Caring for your pet’s pearly whites isn’t just a February thing; veterinarians all across the country want to remind pet parents that their pet’s dental health should also be a concern all year long. Pets with developing gingivitis and periodontal diseases often paw at their faces or mouths frequently, have excessive drool, and may also exhibit unwillingness to eat harder foods. As with many health issues, prevention is always the best medicine. One way you can take a proactive role in preventing oral disease in your pet is by using an important tool that many pet parents neglect to purchase for their four-legged friends: a toothbrush. You should use a soft-bristled toothbrush to clean your pet’s teeth daily in order to remove any food particles and prevent the build up of tartar and plaque deposits. Also, make sure to only use toothpaste specially formulated for use on pets. Overall health begins with a good diet, but did you know that many dental health issues are caused by malnutrition? Work with your veterinarian to address your pet’s nutrition and develop a healthy eating plan. Your veterinarian may recommend a professional

teeth cleaning for your dog or cat once or twice a year or as needed. In cases of serious oral disease, your veterinarian may additionally recommend a tooth extraction. You can also find many dental clinics, depending on where you live, that offer dental cleanings at a discounted rate. Keeping on top of your pet’s dental health has lasting, positive effects. Furthermore, some studies suggest that maintaining oral health can add up to five years to your pet’s life.
