"Operation SJNRS" Blasts Off Successfully With E-MISSION: "MOON, MARS, & BEYOND"! submitted by Mr. E. YOUNG, SJNRS Computer Teacher
On January 19, 2017, at 0900 hours, the fourth and fifth graders of Saint John Neumann Regional School began their eventful interactive educational experience called an "E-Mission" or "E-Lab. Please check out their website at e-missions.net. The students were broken into six teams, five of them located on different planets: Jupiter, Saturn, Neptune, Uranus, and Pluto. The last team was a communications team, which would receive information from all the other teams
and relay it back to Earth Mission Control. Earth Mission Control was run by Commander Hutchinson of West Virginia, communicated via SKYPE, a means of live video conferencing. Commander Hutchinson introduced herself and gave the following scenario: "The year is 2080. We've lost contact with a manned spacecraft travelling between Jupiter and Pluto and we need to mount a rescue operation to find and save them. Your task is to track when the spacecraft was in your vicinity, plot their trajectory from your perspective using your space charts, and to determine the current projected location. Additionally, the rescue craft must be supplied with enough air, water, and food to ensure the survival for the full round trip back home." Videos and pictures were transmitted to clearly communicate what was expected throughout and to immerse pupils in this situation; these were projected onto a wall so that all could clearly see and hear what was going on. Commander Hutchinson also emphasized how to communicate to her properly by calling her "Commander

Hutchinson" or "Earth Mission Control" and using "over" to end their line of communication. The six teams got to work. Cargo specialists from each planet calculated what was needed for the round trip for each supply. Decoders decrypted encoded messages which transmitted when and where the missing spacecraft entered and exited their systems or other unidentified objects travelling through their planetary systems. Plotters used this information to calculate on a Cartesian (X, Y) coordinate system space chart. All this information was then relayed to and from the Communications Team to "Earth Mission Control" where Commander Hutchinson would check their work and see if corrections were needed. Finally, all teams would come together for a final conference to put the puzzle together; joining the plotted trajectories to and from their planetary systems to locate the spacecraft's current location. Commander Hutchinson sent out the rescue craft and declared the mission a complete success once the craft was rescued. The astronaut survivors viewed their new supplies in zero gravity. All in all, a job well done! Students were truly engaged, communicated well, and learned practical uses for various math problems in a fun, educational way. Cooperative learning, math skills and technology created a fun and amazing lesson!

Habitat for Humanity of the Lehigh Valley submitted by HOLLY EDINGER
The Habitat for Humanity Restore is located at 1053 Grape Street, Whitehall. Since opening, the store launched the latex paint recycling program in 2015 and began selling the signature reColor Paint. The store has steadily grown in both donated products and sales. Donations to be sold at the ReStore, come from many people and companies throughout the Lehigh Valley. Local hotels have donated their furnishings and even stores like Lowe’s donate cabinets, lumber and building supplies. Recently the Habitat Restore received a
noteworthy donation of over 1,000 brand-new home decoration items. These high-end products range from hand painted dressers to stunning glass vases and lamps. The donation was so large that Habitat needed warehouse space to sort and process the donation. Local business, PennCap Properties, donated the warehouse space to store this enormous donation. Lisa Pecktor, of PennCap, is a longtime supporter of Habitat and the Woman’s Build that takes place each spring. The first shipment of these new items hit the store on Wednesday, Janary 25 when the store opened. New items will be brought to the store weekly for the next several weeks. All of the donated items will be sold to benefit the mission of Habitat for Humanity of the Lehigh Valley. “The generosity of the business community in the Lehigh Valley is truly remarkable. We are so fortunate to receive these items and to have a partner like Penncap to help us with space to store the items,” said Holly Edinger, executive director. For the most up-to-date information on this be sure to follow HabitatLV on Facebook or join the mailing list at https://www.facebook.com/ HLVReStore/.

The Price is Right! . . . If You Use Your Senior Discounts! submitted by NORTHAMPTON COUNTY AREA AGENCY ON AGING
Most seniors want to, or need to save money, especially those on a fixed income. They should be aware of the multiple discounts available to them. Many local retailers and a lot of national chains offer discounts from 5 to 20%, and all you need do is ASK. Deals start at various ages, some at 50, others not until 62; but don’t be embarrassed to show your drivers’ license or AARP or AAA card or just say, “I want the senior discount.” Most of the time, it’s one look and they know you meet the criteria; have your ID ready if they don’t get the picture. Here are some examples of companies making it easy for seniors to buy: Kohl’s, Marshalls, Hertz, Walgreens, Dairy Queen, plus many airlines, hotels and car rentals (check your location ahead of time). Among others, EZ-Pass and LANTA give senior discounts-just ASK. Hertz offers up to 25% to AARP members, and National offers as high as 30% for car rentals. Again, just ASK. Why, you may ask, do seniors get this special treatment? Because retailers respect seniors who in turn respect retailers with loyalty and frequency.
Many of the discounts are only available certain days or in various locations, so that stores can build traffic on “off days.” If you get there on the wrong day, just come back when the day is correct; for example, the local Rite Aid offers a discount to seniors on the first Wednesday of each month. Keep your eyes on the newspapers, mail-flyers, even e-mail and computers. And, remember...just ASK!

Brunner The Groundhog I have already many times been out in the County and walked around the fields, And have come upon all the small wildlife When walking. The nice innocent tortoise, And rabbits, very tame, The chipmunks in every tree stump, And possums in tree hollows.
When I see the creatures running around, then I think about my boy; I think that I would need to catch them for him and put them in a cage. Now when I see a groundhog, however, I would then be ashamed To dig them out of their hole and catch them and to take them home with me. Yet the groundhog is rather smart and remarkably cunning; I will tell it to you, you know it also, the groundhog is no pig! The groundhog does not grunt like a pig, you hear nothing from them; They can’t rummage around in the ground, they don’t have a snout (Riesel). In spring (?) all the people say The groundhog is a prophet And come out of their hole to say What the weather will become. The groundhog knows no more about weather, Continued on page 24

And this I am certain, Than an old mule knows About solar eclipses. Yet the people in your town, This I would almost bet on, That they would have a strong belief in The dumb groundhog. The groundhog does not prophesy no more Than an old goose, And is a real deceptive character (humbug) from their head to the tail. Exactly as that groundhog is, So you also find men; On the outside they are gentlemen And deceptive characters on the inside. Heart palpitations, toothache and the mumps, Diarrhea and arthritis – This is again a great deception, Just like the groundhog. Agents (salesman) will come to see you, They speak nice and laugh a lot, And show you how easy it is To make quick money. They point out to you, how to become rich, You must almost believe it. They don’t want to make you profitable, They just want to rob you.
News@TownAndCountryGazette.com || FEBRUARY 2, 2017
Now when you come upon such people – This happens every day – Only they speak for themselves And let you say nothing, Then just be careful with such fellows, That they don’t lie to you; They convince many people, And swindle them. I will give you good advice And this I will gift you: Whenever you come upon such deceptive People, think on the groundhog. [David B. Brunner (1835-1903) was born in Amity Township in Berks County. He graduated from Dickinson College in 1856 and returned to Berks County to become an educator at the Reading Classical School. Later he founded the Reading Academy of Sciences and the Reading Business College. He also served as superintendent of the Reading Schools, starting in 1880. He died in 1903. Most likely his formal education and his interest in the sciences was the reason why he chose not to follow the Groundhog Day tradition. He equated believing in the groundhog as a weather prophet to being scammed by the con men of that day.

(Flimflammers always were and indeed always will be part of society in any age and remind us of that adage, “If it seems too good to be true, it probably is.”) But while his science may have refuted some of the tenets of this folklore, Groundhog Day continues to be celebrated today, a reminder of the PA German heritage of many people of our country.]

Romantic Eating on Valentine's Day courtesy of WIKIHOW.COM
Want to make Valentine’s Day a great night of eating for your partner or significant other? Make February 14th special by considering the preparations necessary for food that your date might enjoy. Cook for your date. Add a personal touch to your Valentine’s Day meal and avoid having to make a dinner reservation on this busy holiday. Make a home-cooked meal for your date and invite him or her over to eat with you for an intimate meal. • Make sure you plan out the recipes you want to make so you can get all your ingredients bought and ready ahead of time. It’s always a good idea to get extra, just in case you make a mistake or miscalculate your measurements. • Try out a classic heart-shaped dessert like cookies or cake, or give other dishes the same whimsical treatment by cutting or arranging them into classic heart shapes. • Avoid really messy foods that could spoil the romantic atmosphere or ruin nice clothes that you and your date might be wearing. Stick to foods you both enjoy, perhaps of a slightly higher quality than you normally eat. • Set the mood for your homemade meal by lighting candles, setting up flowers, playing romantic music, using your best cutlery and plates, and any other decorations—if that’s what your date is into!

Make reservations at a restaurant. Call ahead far in advance to reserve a table at a favorite restaurant, or one you’ve never tried but you know your date will love. Use dinner as an occasion to dress up, or just to enjoy some great cuisine and spend time together. • You don’t need your dinner reservation to be at someplace extra fancy or expensive. Choose a burger joint where you shared your first kiss instead of a five-star restaurant with too-small portions—it’s more important that the location is meaningful or sentimental for your date. • Try a lunch reservation, or a time earlier or later than a typical dinner, to avoid the busy dinner rush that most restaurants will have on the holiday. • Ask if the wait staff can surprise your date with a special dessert, or have the in-house band or musician play your date’s favorite song or a love song. Order food to eat at home. Get the best of both worlds of eating out and dining in by getting takeout or delivery from your date’s favorite restaurant and eating it in the comfort and privacy of home. • Remember that restaurants will be busy on this holiday, even for deliveries or takeout orders. Make sure to call in your order well in advance so you can pick it up or have it delivered by the time you expect. • Add your own romantic touches to a takeout meal, like personalized writing on a cake, a beverage that your date loves, etc. You can even ask a restaurant if they can personalize an order, even if it’s just arranging your pizza toppings into a heart! Surprise your date with their favorite cuisine. Find a restaurant, grocery store, or other location that has food that will remind your date of home, favorite travels, or other happy times. Think of what your date has told you is particularly special to them. Check specialty grocery stores, international aisles, and import stores if you’re looking for food items typically found in other countries.
