Snow Shoveling Safety: Seven Tips to Stay Healthy submitted by Elizabeth Buresh, PT, Good Shepherd Physical Therapy, Laurys Station

Shoveling snow can be risky business with potential falls, slips, shoulder and back injuries. Did you know there is a right way to shovel? Follow these seven tips to help safely get the job done. If you have heart or lung problems, check with your physician before shoveling. If you experience shortness of breath, dizziness or chest, arm pain/pressure, stop and follow up with your doctor and/or call 911. Warm up. Shoveling is strenuous, so prepare like you would for any exercise. March in place, do 10 backward shoulder rolls (gently roll shoulders up, back and forward), and stretch up to the ceiling a few times. Wear boots and non-skid soles. Prevent falls by wearing boots with non-skid soles or consider clip-on non-skid specialty soles over boots for better traction. Utilize good ergonomic form and posture. The techniques below will help prevent injuries from lifting, twisting and/or overreaching. • Keep the spine straight by imagining a line between your head and hips. Hold your head up and contract your abdominal muscles. • Keep your body square toward the snow you lift, and keep your scoops light. • Keep the full shovel close to your body, with one hand close to the blade and the other on the handle. • Avoid twisting your back while moving snow. Pivot your body or walk to deposit the load of snow rather than reaching or twisting. Continued on page 4

Find the right shovel. Today’s shovels have ergonomic designs and adjustable handles to minimize stress and bending. Switch it up. Switch up activities and avoid repetitive bending. Change arms to avoid one-sided strain, and take periodic breaks to stretch, walk or even clear off your car. Listen to Your Body. Pain is the body’s alarm system, alerting you to damage. Never work through pain, as it will magnify the injury and increase its

likelihood of becoming chronic. Wait until your pain subsides or ask others for help. To schedule an appointment for those aches and pains, call Good Shepherd Physical Therapy at 1-888-44-REHAB (73422).

Come Walk With Us

Most months, Lehigh Township Rails to Trails will be leading walks around towns and on paths in the northern Lehigh Valley area. In mid-January, members of LTRT led a walk around Palmerton. Several guests joined us. The weather was great and everyone enjoyed seeing parts of the town away from the main street. Our next walk will take place in Slatington, on Sunday, February 23rd, at 1:00 PM. We’ll meet at the trail head in Slatington, under the covered pavilion. This is your chance to get some fresh air, stretch your legs, meet new people and see parts of the town of which you might not be aware. The walk should last about 1 and 1/2 hours. Come join us! Bad weather will cancel the walk. For more information or information about membership in LTRT, call or text Nancy at 484 3309627.

COOKING WITH CATHERINE

Sweet Corn Risotto with Sautéed Shrimp Recipe courtesy of Delish.com

INGREDIENTS • 3 c. chicken stock • 3 tbsp. extra-virgin olive oil • 1 small white onion, minced • 1 c. Arborio rice • ¾ c. dry white wine • 2 ears corn, kernels removed • 2 tbsp. unsalted butter • ¼ c. freshly grated Parmesan • 2 tbsp. freshly chopped parsley • 2 cloves garlic, minced • 1 small shallot, minced • 1 tsp. crushed red pepper flakes • 1 ½ lb. medium shrimp, peeled and deveined • 2 tbsp. finely chopped fresh basil, plus more for serving • Kosher salt • Freshly ground black pepper

DIRECTIONS 1. In a medium saucepan, bring chicken stock to a simmer. 2. In a large skillet, over medium-high heat, heat 1 tablespoon olive oil. Add onion and cook until beginning to soften, about 4 minutes. Add rice and cook, stirring constantly for 1 minute. Add half cup white wine and simmer until evaporated, about 2 to 3 minutes. 3. Reduce heat to medium; add about half cup stock and simmer, occasionally stirring, until absorbed. Continue adding stock in half cup increments, stirring and letting it absorb, until stock

is gone, about 15 to 20 minutes. 4. Remove from heat and stir in corn, butter, Parmesan and parsley. Season with salt and pepper and transfer to large bowl. 5. Add remaining 2 tablespoons olive oil to skillet and heat over medium-high heat. Add garlic, shallot and red pepper flakes, cook until fragrant, about 1 to 2 minutes. 6. Add shrimp and cook until pink and beginning to brown, 3 to 4 minutes. 7. Add remaining ¼ cup white wine and let simmer until evaporated, about 2 minutes. 8. Remove from heat, season with salt and pepper, stir in basil. 9. Add risotto back to skillet, stirring to combine with shrimp. 10. Garnish with basil and serve. So this was my first attempt at risotto, I’ve always wanted to try making it but have always avoided it! I was pretty pleased with the results given it was a first try. I do think this dish was tastier a day or two left over. This recipe was very easy but I wish it had more of a corn flavor; with a name of sweet corn risotto I felt like it should have tasted, well, cornier, as opposed to plain risotto with pieces of corn mixed into it. Otherwise, I thought it was very good and I’m ready to keep getting my risotto on!

Thanking Walnutport Shoebox Packers submitted by Dana Williams

Dear Editor, I am writing to thank Walnutport residents for sharing the true meaning of Christmas with children in need this past holiday season. Because of the generosity of donors in Walnutport and across the United States, Operation Christmas Child, a project of Samaritan’s Purse, collected more than 8.9 million shoebox gifts in 2019. Combined with those collected from partnering countries in 2019, the ministry is now sending 10,569,405 shoebox gifts to children worldwide. Through shoeboxes—packed with fun toys, school supplies and hygiene items—Walnutport volunteers brought joy to children in need around the world. Each gift-filled shoebox is a tangible expression of God’s love, and it is often the first gift these children have ever received. Thanks to the generosity of donors, Operation Christmas Child has collected and delivered more than 178 million gift-filled shoeboxes to children in more than 160 countries and territories since 1993. Thank you again to everyone who participated in this global project— many who do so year after year.

The 5 Biggest 2020 Wedding Trends You Need to Know By Kim Forrest

Our 2020 wedding trends are ideal starting points as you plan your celebration. Whether you’re into ‘90s nostalgia or going eco-friendly, these ideas can work for every wedding style and personality. Here’s the thing about wedding trends—they don’t really matter all that much. We know, that may sound weird coming from a wedding-focused company, but it’s the truth.Yes, it’s nice to familiarize yourself with 2020 wedding trends if you’re getting married soon, but remember that your wedding should be all about you and your partner. If some of these trends resonate with you and you’d like to use them in your wedding, awesome. If not, no biggie. You’ll find that these 2020 wedding trends are less specific and more open to interpretation (no “pampas grass is the new greenery” here) so you can take your own spin on them. Because after all, the things that make your wedding unique are the things that make them amazing. On that note, here are the top 2020 wedding trends to consider incorporating into your own celebration.

1. '90s babies are getting married—and featuring unique nostalgic elements in their weddings. The average age of a person getting married in 2020 is 33, meaning that many soon-to-be weds came of age in the 1990s. So it’s not too surprising that couples are looking to that decade to infuse their event with a dose of nostalgia. Some of the 2020 wedding trends that hearken back to the ‘90s

include holographic and iridescent stationery elements (hello, Lisa Frank!), as well as celestialinspired details (an updated take on those glowin-the-dark stars every ‘90s kid had on their ceilings). From a fashion perspective, minimalist gowns a la the ultimate ‘90s bride, Carolyn Bessette, are trending, as are accessorizing with barrettes. For a #tbt-meets-wedding vibe, ‘90s babies are even including all-white moon bounces (an elevated take on the beloved birthday party entertainment) as a throwback activity guests will love.

2. The “grandmillennial” look is the new vintage.

Today’s couples are embracing the look of yesteryear. No, we’re not talking about the 1920s Art Deco vibe or the early 20th century Downton Abbey style that gained popularity in recent years. We’re talking about a modern take on the looks our grandparents loved—putting an eclectic twist on super-feminine patterns and details (think The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel meets Glossier). For example, pastel hues like pistachio green, lavender, and butter yellow are popping up more than ever, as well as grandma-inspired décor elements such as dried flowers, wallpaper, and ribbon. We’re also loving how today’s couples are mixing and matching patterns popularized in years past, such as buffalo check, gingham, toile, bold florals, and Chinoiserie. Expect to also see richer textures, like velvet, on the Continued on page 14

and other fun activities near or even inside the restrooms. Couples are also taking an Instagramworthy yet personal twist with their wedding portraits—instead of taking romantic photos in picturesque gardens or parks, they’re heading to their favorite fast-food eateries or coffee shops to enjoy #eeeeats while wearing their wedding finery.

3. Yes, Instagram-worthy wedding details are trending—but they have to feel personal, too.

Here’s the ultimate challenge for today’s soonto-be weds: Create an event that feels personal but that’s also good for the ‘gram. One of the best ways to do this is through food. From conveyer belt hors d'oeuvres to vending machine-style champagne stations, abundant charcuterie board centerpieces to unique non-cake cakes such as cookies, cinnamon buns, and pancakes, couples (and their caterers) are letting their creativity shine during every menu course. Unique escort cards provide another opportunity to surprise and delight—we’ve seen everything from coconuts to shots of liquor, baguettes to pins directing guests to their tables. Couples are even taking Instagram-worthy entertainment to the next level—in the bathroom, stationing tarot card readers, champagne stations,

If we could sum up our 2020 wedding trends in one phrase, it would be this: Go bold or go home. No longer are couples concerned about wedding details being “too much”—they’re embracing wowworthy visual and tactile experiences like never before. Whether it’s donning a maximalist wedding dress with lots of embellishments, exaggerated sleeves, and ball gown skirts, including statement décor such as metallic spray-painted flowers or hanging floral centerpieces, or including sassier language or puns that would make Grandma blush on neon or letterboard signage or stationery (hello “drunk in love”, “sh*t just got real”, or “you guac my world”), couples aren’t afraid to take their wedding details to the next level.

5. Couples are thinking about the bigger picture—not just their wedding, but how it can impact the world.

Sustainability is not just a 2020 wedding trend— it’s a way of life, and that extends to planning a wedding with the environment top of mind. For example, the micro wedding trend is gaining traction as couples strive to create a smaller environmental footprint with their big days. Décor elements are being reused—from ceremony structures repurposed for the reception space to bouquets doubling as centerpieces. On the culinary front, we can also expect to see more meatless weddings, or weddings that feature inclusive menus that appeals to guests with different dietary needs and restrictions. Edible flowers are a no-waste way to adorn ice cubes, desserts, salads, and more. And charitable favors—allowing the couple to donate to a meaningful cause—aren’t going anywhere.

Amber & Nate

Our love story isn’t the most romantic love story of all time, unless of course, you are an Edgar Allan Poe fan. It isn’t every day that you find love in a funeral home. We met at our Alma Mater, Northampton Community College, on a day where there was continuing education credits being offered in order to keep our Funeral Director’s licenses up-to-date. We can’t say it was love at first sight, but we can say the mortuary makeup airbrush techniques we learned that day were pretty fascinating! We grew our friendship each day. That friendship eventually blossomed into a bond tighter than anything we have felt before. In careers that compel us to be the light on someone’s darkest day, we never forget to be each other’s. #AmberFoundHerSoulNate

Pat & Daryl Daryl And Pat Amey

In the summers of going to high school, Pat worked as a waitress at the Blue Mountain Ice Cream Stand owned by the Reph family in Danielsville. Daryl worked at his fathers garage in Cherryville. One of his friends who patronized the garage made a bet with Daryl that he did not have the courage to ask Pat for a date. He started to go to the ice cream stand and they became acquainted and his friend lost the bet. When school started that September they started to date and continued to date for two years and attended the prom together. After graduation the couple married on July 7, 1962. This year they will be married 58 years. They have a daughter, Sheila Rapchak and a son Jason J Amey Sr. Four grandchildren, Jessica (Rapchak) Yost, Chad Rapchak, Brittany (Amey) Cinamella, and Jason J Amey, Jr. Four great grandchildren, Christian and Cole Yost and Eyvin and Elias Cinamella. and add "the romantic feel of a candlelight reception," says event planner Brooke Keegan. "Try a variety of heights for added drama."

Late-Night Eats

Late-night snacks are a crowd pleaser like no other. When stomachs start grumbling after two hours of tearing up the dance floor, a surprise snack attack delivered via an ice cream sandwich station or a local food truck acts as "fuel to keep the party going," says Keegan.

Throw Pillows From Home

Jazz up your lounge areas and make guests feel right at home with some chic and cozy throw pillows, suggests DiSalvo-Follmer. Already own some? Great! If not, chose inexpensive throw pillows from houseware stores, thrift shops, and online that you can later repurpose in your home after the big day. (We're all for wedding ideas and decor you can recycle afterward!)

Statement Chairs

It's easy to overlook what's under you, but chic seats make a major impact, says Keegan. "They're one of the first things eyes focus on in a room."

Decorative Paper Straws

A must-have for any eco-friendly bride! Paper straws that complement your wedding theme or colors look absolutely smashing in a mixed drink or signature cocktail, says Charleston-based wedding planner Francesca DiSalvo-Follmer of Pure Luxe Bride. "You can buy a bunch of these in bulk for a very low cost via sites like Etsy." Plus, you'll be giving some love to the environment by

Fresh Garnishes

Consult your caterer on this one! As Swoon California wedding and event planners Jennifer Arreguin and Natasha Burton point out, fresh garnishes on drinks and plates (even just one sprig on each place setting) can amp up the wow factor and elevate your cocktail hour or seated meal. And it'll barely cost you a thing!

Amber & Peter We met about eight or nine years ago at our church in Emerald, Pennsylvania. We were heading to Sunset Beach, North Carolina on a mission trip with our youth group. At the time, I was sixteen years old and Peter was twenty-one. I knew there was a connection almost instantly but I never said anything to him. We didn’t start dating until five years later. We got engaged the weekend of my twenty-second birthday at Kalahari in the Poconos. With a lot of discussion, we decided to set a date for November 2, 2019. After around twenty bridal shows, we decided to choose Olde Homestead Golf Club in New Tripoli as our venue. We’ve been married a little over two months, but it still feels like just yesterday.

Avery & Jonathan We met back in 2014 through some people we both knew. Our first adventure together was a trip to the top of Bake Oven Knob and our first "official date" was to see a movie. It didn't take long to fall for each other...soon we became inseparable. We didn't entirely enjoy the same things, but we definitely proved that opposites attract. On a beautiful April day in 2018, Jon proposed to me on a South Carolina lakefront. I could tell he was really nervous because he grabbed the wrong hand! I laughed and happily accepted! We got married on October 26th, 2019 and are enjoying our time together and cherishing each day. We are thankful that we both found our one in a million and can't wait to keep making memories together.

5 Ways to Deal With Pre-Wedding Jitters By Léa Rose Emery

Pre-wedding jitters are a totally normal part of getting married—but they’re still enough to make anyone panic. Despite the fact that most people have them, they make you start thinking about the big questions: Have I made a mistake? Am I ready? Is this really the rest of my life? Even if someone is completely in love and ready to get married, these questions can creep up. And, if you’re a friend of the bride, it may feel like your job to warm up the cold feet. Which is pretty daunting, to say the least. “If your friend has pre-wedding jitters, you can be a great sounding board for them,” relationship therapist Aimee Hartstein, LCSW, tells Brides. “Wedding jitters are normal, but there’s always the

possibility that they have real fears that they are marrying the wrong person. But more often than not, wedding anxiety is quite normal.” So you need to sit there and you need to listen—but what do you say? What do you do? It’s difficult to know how Continued on page 24

wrapped in a tissue (nabbed from the best man, because neither of us really smoke). I had chocolate. I knew it would be a stressful time and sometimes talking just doesn’t cut it.You know your friend, so use that and think outside the box. It’s a big day, so you can let loose a little.

Take on the Voice of Reason

Pre-Wedding Jitters Continued from page 23

to handle it when someone is asking you about such huge life decisions. Here’s what to keep in mind.

Be a Positive Force

First, try to bring them back down to earth a bit. “You can listen to your friend, remind them of the things they love about the person they are marrying, and in general just try to make their weeks leading up the wedding easier,” Hartstein says. There are a lot of reasons why they decided to marry this person, so it’s time to remind them of those. Maybe they just need a reminder of all of the positive things about the relationship.

Be Aware

Sometimes people are getting married to the wrong person. It’s unusual that a relationship would make it that far, but be sure the jitters aren’t really a cry for help.“However, if you sense that it’s a bad match and have a feeling that your friend has very real fears that they should not be getting married then be open-minded and supportive,” Hartstein says. “I wouldn’t lead them in either direction, but feel free to reflect back to them things they have said about their partner. The things that really work in the relationship and the things that really don’t.” Try to work as a mirror for what your friend is saying. Explain what you’re hearing back to them, and let them draw their own conclusions—you don’t want to be the friend who encouraged a bride to run when it was just normal nerves.

There’s so much pressure on modern relationships to be perfect. We hear about "the one" and project this fairy tale onto our partner. The wedding day is often the epitome of that, with expectations that are just out of control. You need to give your friend a healthy dose of reality. “You can also remind them that no relationship is perfect,” Hartstein says. ”It’s normal to have things in a partnership that are problematic. One wouldn’t throw out the baby with the bathwater because of a few fights or disagreements.”

Have Some Agency—but Remember You Can’t Change It All

Ultimately, getting married is a huge, but very personal, decision. Their jitters will also be personal. You can’t be inside her head. And even if there are major problems, you can’t make your friend see them—or fix them. That’s on them. All you can do is try your best to take control of the situations and snap them out of their nervousness. At the end of the day, how they feel about their wedding and whether they decide to go through with it or not is their decision. Your opinion and your actions will only go so far—so let yourself off the hook a little. Dealing with pre-wedding jitters always feels really tricky, but more often than not it can be sorted out with a pep talk. Remember, you know your friend and you know how to get through to her, so don’t be afraid to think outside the box. But if the nerves seem to point to bigger problems, try to stay measured. Ultimately, you’re just there as support— it’s her decision.

Don’t Be Afraid to Indulge

When my best friend got married, I was there to help—with whatever she needed. I had champagne and vodka on hand. I had two emergency cigarettes 24

Dear Mothers-In-Law, this is what your Daughter-In-Law wants you to know… This post was inspired by the sudden realization that someday I am also going to be a mother- in- law. I thought about the type of mother-in-law that I would want to be…. I have always wondered as to why it is often so hard for mothers-in-law and daughters-in-law to have a good relationship? Is it because of the different cultures or personalities that clash? OR Maybe it is because we never really had the opportunity to talk about what has been on our mind for the longest time? Not every mother and daughter-in-law have a disastrous relationship but sometimes there may be conflict when you least expect it. Dear Mother-In-Laws, this is what your DaughterIn-Law wants you to know… It is true that when you get married, you end up marrying your spouse’s family too but adjusting to a new family isn’t always the easiest thing to do – especially when you marry outside your religion, race, and culture. You should know about this because once upon a time, you were a newly wedded daughter-in-law too – one who also had to try hard to win over her inlaws.

Most of the time it is easier for a man to adjust to his wife’s family while the wife struggles to find her place in his home – mainly because she’s somehow mistaken to be taking her mothers-in-law’s place. Dear Mothers-In-Law, even though your relationship has changed with your son, remember that you will always be his mother. I am the woman in your son’s life now. I know that you feel as if I have taken your spot as your son’s biggest fan but remember this isn’t a competition. It’s not about being better or being the favourite. You may see him less often and he may miss your calls more often but remember that doesn’t mean that he doesn’t love you anymore. You will always have a special place in his heart, a place that I can never replace. You and I are both equally important to him. It is important that we understand each other and get along. I want to be your friend, I want to be treated like your daughter but sometimes you make that impossible. Just because I am married to your son doesn’t mean that my life will now revolve around your likes Continued on page 26

Dear Mothers-In-Law Continued from page 25

and dislikes. I am my own person. Don’t expect me to dress and eat the way that you want me to. I am a modern woman who wants to work and go out for dinner with friends. Sometimes I need my space – even from your son. Please be patient with me while I try to figure out the role called wife to your son and mother to your grandkids. There are no manuals on how to be the perfect wife, mother, and daughter-in-law so I would appreciate it if you stop comparing me to others including my sisters-in-law and love me for the way that I am and the way that I look. Respect my decisions and my parenting style. Don’t expect me to keep quiet when you try to give my kids sugar in my presence. Let me parent my kids in the way I want too. But remember we value your relationship with the kids. They need you! You are important to us. Don’t feel as if we are pushing you away, sometimes we need to grow and learn on our own. Yes, I may be spending more time with my mother than with you but it’s because she’s my mother and everyone needs their mother at times, just like the way that your son prefers some of your food over mine. Your son chose me so accept me for who I am and realize that I may do things differently from you in my home.

I’d like it if you would like to get to know me as a person and give me the opportunity to bond with you because there will come a time when I will need your advice and tips. I’m not the bad person here… I am not taking your son away from you. Instead, I am giving you new family members. I wish that you would pick up the phone and call me just to chat. Let’s find things that we may have in common, and let’s enjoy them together. Don’t push me away… Don’t complain about me to him in my absence, you will only be the one responsible for his unhappy marriage. All I wish is that you understand that I am not you… I believe you when you say that you were the perfect wife who woke up at 4 am to cook a fresh meal for your husband’s lunch. I am not that woman. Times have changed. I am the mom who has to see to her children and her husband and go to work. You may have worked and been a mom.You have had your own challenges and I respect you for that. My challenges are a bit different. I also want to be there for my kids when they come home from school but I simply cannot. My husband needs my financial support if we want to give our children the life that we would like to. I know that you want the best for your grandchildren too. We (daughters-in-law) understand you but it hurts when you seem to take pleasure in knocking us down. Your son and I chose each other. We are not taking him away from you. We want to be a part of your family – but it sometimes feels as if we are outsiders looking in. It seems hypocritical when you judge us for the very things that your daughters do. I know that it is easy to compare people and fault find, but do you remember the way that it was when you were the daughter-in-law to a different motherin-law. Looking back would it change the way that you are to us? I have heard so many stories of mothers-in-law treating their daughters-in-law in the same way that they were treated. Is it a subconscious act of revenge or preservation? I have heard of mothers-in-law who treat their daughters-in-law like daughters. I salute you!

There were all sorts of weather; Yet as we are in nineteen forty now Here we are still so uncertain. The weatherman in Washington, He forecasts as good as he can; Misses it once, then he strikes again, And misses the target again. The rooster crows on the manure pile, Then one says that the weather will change;

Yes, it will certainly change completely, Otherwise, it would always remain the same! A fat goose, late in the year, It smears the belly [should it be chest?] so wonderfully; And whoever can read the goose bones, That one also strikes it right, now and then. In February there is still the groundhog, She comes out of her hole on the second; How the people are interested, When she practices her skill once again. This little animal is pretty smart, It comes exactly at the same time of the year; A little sun commonly appears, Then she can easily get away from it. She runs quickly into her hole, For six weeks it will still be winter; And the weather may be what it wants to be, Of this everything is immaterial for her. With cloudy weather she will remain outside, Then one doesn’t make out any better; When it gives snow squalls, blizzards and storms [toben, to storm, std. Ger.], The groundhog will still be praised here.

Yes, groundhog, just continue as you are! I will still take your side; And if you also miss the target, Yes, well, the others do that also!

February In February, the second month on the calendar, Here the weather is also not nicer; The wind is howling, One burns the coal, Needs to heat more than in January. How one slides so gladly under the covers, Does not want to stick out his little nose; Then one soon falls asleep, Morning will come along, They can barely wake up someone. The cats, they are not freezing, One hears them at night courting They are out on the fence With their tails swaying – How they will try anything! Because of our income, here come the taxes, They make our pocketbooks groan; There are still poor here, God has pity on them, They know nothing about this nonsense. People send us valentines, They make us happy at heart; But some sent such rabble [to insult us], These just make one angry, One must just close his eyes to those. Yet February does not make us afraid – Sausage is still hanging on the rope; We still also have ham [left] And something to dunk – February – it will not storm much longer.

Financial Abuse Almost all abusers will financially abuse their partners, but we don’t really hear about it. Did you know that 99% of people who experience domestic and intimate partner abuse will also experience financial abuse? Well, it’s true. There are many different ways abusers control the survivor’s money. Even though it is so common, people don’t usually discuss their finances. What are some types of financial abuse and common behaviors you can spot? An abuser will often slowly remove the survivor’s access to cash, either in their own or their joint funds. They could ask that the survivor deposit wages into a joint account that only the abuser has access to. The abuser could have a joint account with the survivor that they carefully track. They could allow the survivor to spend their own money, but over time less purchases are “acceptable.”This will happen until the survivor is only allowed to use their money for household bills or groceries. Even then, they must provide a receipt of each payment and give the change back to the abuser. Abusers may steal from survivors and commit fraud. They believe that because they are in a relationship the rules don’t apply as they would

for other people. For example, they might forge a survivor’s signature on bank documents, open new lines of credit in their name, or max out one of their credit cards. But when it comes time to pay up on that debt, it becomes yours. They will lie and manipulate you into not holding them responsible for their actions. Some actions are both financial and emotional/ physical abuse, such as separating the survivor from friends, family, and coworkers. The abuser may do this by telling the survivor they can’t work, directly causing them to get fired (making threats at their job or becoming a bother), or by indirectly causing them to get fired (causing the survivor’s depression or hurting them so they can’t go to work). When the survivor can’t go to work, the abuser has more control. They will control who they see, how much money they earn, how much access they have to money, and can limit their resources. Separating the survivor from their friends and family can affect their social, emotional, spiritual, and physical health as well. All of the tools that abusers use to financially control survivors are not okay. They can happen without emotional or physical abuse (although they

often happen at the same time). Some ways to plan to get out of an abusive relationship where financial abuse is a tactic: • Try to make money on the side without the abuser’s knowledge. • Store your money with a trusted friend/relative or in a separate bank account. • Sell clothes, jewelry, or other personal items and keep the money in a safe place. • Apply for a credit card only in your name and keep it somewhere safe for emergencies. • See if friends/family can loan you money. • Ask for cash as gifts on holidays.
