List of Daily Needs for Elderly Care submitted by JULIE BOEHLKE
As we age, we often face additional needs and challenges connected to getting older. If a family member, neighbor, or friend has reached a point where he needs assistance with his daily routine, you'll need to know what those daily needs are. Allow him to be as independent, while respectfully helping him with the tasks that have become difficult. Mobility is important to the elderly, even if it is just within their own surroundings. Make sure they are properly fitted for either a wheelchair, motorized mobility chair, walker or cane. Install a wheelchair ramp, hand rails and wider door wells to make getting around the house hassle-free. A hospital bed, shower chair, lift or tripod bar may assist with getting up from bed or staying safe in the shower. Transportation Transportation can be lifesaving to an elderly person. If he can no longer drive, set up transportation so he can get to and from medical appointments and physical therapy. Having a caretaker or assistant who visits on certain days to take an elderly person to run errands, to attend a social function or to go to the doctor is beneficial. Medication Senior citizens need proper medication to remain healthy. This begins with adequate medical care, such as doctor's visits, dental care, foot care, eye care, physical therapy and psychiatric therapy, if needed. If they need assistance with taking their pills or giving themselves shots of insulin, a homehealth nursing system may need to be added to their daily plan of care. Personal Care Personal care is an important daily need for a senior citizen. She may need assistance with bathing, dressing and personal grooming. A homehealth aide or other family member can help with these tasks, if necessary. FEBRUARY 7, 2019 || townandcountrygazette.com
Nutrition An elderly person needs proper nutrition to stay healthy and enjoy a comfortable life. Have a nutritionist or caregiver go over a daily meal plan to know what foods best fit that person's lifestyle. Meals can be prepared weekly so it is easier for the senior citizen to heat and eat a warm meal every day. Programs such as Meals on Wheels ensure that an elderly person receives at least one healthy meal daily.

List of Daily Needs for Elderly Care Whether it’s a parent, a grandparent, a relative, a friend, or even ourselves, the new challenges and changes that come with aging require our flexibility, openness to change, and acceptance of a new way of life. Instead of focusing on the negatives we may associate with our senior years and long-term care (any decline in health, physical mobility, cognitive ability, and social isolation), we need to take a nonjudgmental attitude to the natural changes our bodies go through and focus on what we can do during our later years. Indeed, the ability to stay in one’s home in our older years instead of a nursing home is a positive and empowering concept and, in this day and age, it is becoming more and more of a preferred and achievable lifestyle choice. Technology advances, home modifications, myriad caregiving services, and the involvement and engagement of our family members make aging at home a realistic goal for many. Read on to see what we can do and what is currently available for helping the elderly so they can live their best lives at home. Tips for Aging Well – At Home Making sure your loved ones are safe, healthy,
and happy in their own homes as they age is of primary importance. It is the key to helping the elderly age well at home. We need to ensure that the activities of daily living (ADL) are met efficiently and safely. The basic ADL activities are typically listed as: Eating Functional Mobility (moving from one place to another while performing activities such getting in and out of bed, in and out of a chair) Dressing Bathing or Showering Personal Hygiene (includes brushing/styling hair, shaving, grooming activities) Toilet Hygiene (includes getting to the toilet, self-cleaning, getting up from the toilet) In addition, we also need to consider instrumental activities of daily living (IADLs). IADLs most often refer to the following types of activities: Cleaning and Maintaining the Home Cooking and Preparing Meals Shopping and Buying Necessities Running Errands (Moving within the community) Managing Money and Finances Communicating (Through phone or other devices) Taking Prescribed Medications Organizing and Modifying the Home In order to help older people enjoy and make the most of aging in their own home instead of a nursing home, it needs to provide the safety and convenience necessary for their specific needs and long-term care. Looking at the ADLs and some IADLs is an important consideration when identifying whether and what adjustments and modifications are needed in the home. There are many companies and websites dedicated to making homes senior-friendly to allow safe aging at home. Mobility As you look at how well the senior’s current home is arranged to provide the needed support for daily mobility, we should ask the following questions: How well can you walk? Can you climb up and down the stairs? Can you get in and out of bed by yourself? Can you sit and get out of a chair by yourself? If they have any problems with the above it’s probably necessary to use a cane, a walker, a rollator, Continued on page 12

a knee scooter, or a wheelchair (manual or power) to assist with moving about. As a result, the types of things needed in the senior’s home to accommodate such equipment, include modifying doorways (for wider clearance) and replacing door knobs with door lever handles for easier manipulation. Eliminating risks from slipping and tripping is also important when mobility is impaired. It’s recommended to replace the carpeting in the home with non-slip, hard floor surfaces. Hygiene The daily routine around hygiene is important to address as well when looking at having the optimum format for seniors. There are many modifications or accessories available to support senior hygiene needs. Showering Consider a shower chair to reduce the risk of falling, slipping or spilling extra water. It also makes it physically less demanding while showering thus reducing fatigue. This will also make it easier to shower more regularly and keep up overall hygiene. Another option to the shower chair is a tub transfer bench, which allows a senior to safely move into

and out of the bathtub or shower along with a special shower curtain that has a unique fit around the bench to reduce water spillage onto the floor. Other musts include anti-slip mats and grab bars for the bath. If a senior has difficulty lifting their legs over the bathtub, you may consider a cut-out bathtub or replace the bath entirely with a curbfree shower stall. Again, these are all things to consider when looking at making the home suit the senior’s daily hygiene needs. Toileting At some point, they may need extra support and assistance with toileting. Reduced range of motion and physical strength may become an issue and make the right changes to the bathroom to support safe and convenient toileting is often necessary (i.e. installing an ADA height toilet with a toilet base riser or toilet seat riser). Over time, there will certainly be the need to make some changes to keep the bathroom safe and accommodating for older people. Grooming and Dressing There are various accessories available that are designed to help and assist with daily grooming (brushing, shaving, etc.) and dressing activities. If reduced mobility in the arms and hands is an issue, items like a sock dressing aid, an extra-long handled brush, ergonomic nail clippers, grabber tools, etc. can make grooming and dressing much easier. This allows the continued independence of daily grooming and dressing and dignity associated with keeping basic hygiene needs on a normal level. Housework Being able to continue doing housework is important to feeling active and independent, and reduced mobility can cause frustration and problems with this. Luckily, there are many innovative items that can help the elderly in doing daily home-related chores. It’s recommended to invest in getting a step stool, cordless 2-in-1 stick and handheld vacuum and step trash can. These are inexpensive but practical changes that make daily home activities easier as we age. In addition, getting a front-load washer and dryer and wheeled laundry cart is recommended for easing the strain of laundry duties. Gardening can be a pleasurable chore that seniors love doing, especially because it is attractive and source of pride to their home. There are various accommodating garden tools that are especially geared at helping elderly gardeners (i.e. adaptive handle tools, electric and extra lightweight tools). Investing in these practical tools not only will ensure continued activity but also satisfaction related to outdoor gardening and yard work.

Cooking and Eating As an elderly person, this is another important daily activity that may become more tedious as time goes by and, depending on the overall mobility and strength of the senior involved, various solutions can provide continued independence for them in the kitchen. Practical items that reduce the preparation and work around cooking include a slow cooker, electric food processor, and food slicer. Again, there are many choices available for these items and a lightweight, easy-to-use version is a great choice to make cooking more enjoyable and less work! It may be necessary to do some additional remodeling in the kitchen to allow ease of reach, such as pull out pantry shelves, raised wall ovens, side by side refrigerator, etc. Safer options, such as electric cooktops (to replace gas version if necessary), an oven rack puller, armlength oven mitts, and a boil over safeguard are also things to consider in reducing kitchen accident risks. When it comes to eating, reducing spillage and other potential hazards are important as well. Simple solutions, such as a non-slip placemat, assistive eating utensils, and having appropriate height dining table and chairs if necessary, can ensure more stable and enjoyable independent meal times. Modern Safety Solutions An important way to help the elderly age at home is to ensure their safety. Beyond making modifications to their home, we should consider purchasing a medical alert system which will provide an additional safeguard. Designed to give 24/7 contact with emergency services in the event FEBRUARY 7, 2019 || townandcountrygazette.com
of an accident, fall, or health situation, investing in a medical alert system gives peace of mind to seniors and their families while allowing them to stay independent in their homes. Continued on page 14

Homecare Assistance – Extra Help to Keep Life Enjoyable It’s nice to know that as a senior you can depend on someone to assist if it becomes difficult to take care of some basic daily life activities alone. Relatives and friends or even neighbors are usually the first in line to provide caregiving support. Whether it’s a dedicated relative providing ongoing basic care support or several relatives that pitch in to help their elderly family member, it’s a serious and significant responsibility. Another way to help the elderly age at home is by employing a professional caregiver. Whether they require some help with chores, errands, or even need skilled medical care there are professionals who specialize in helping the elderly in their homes. Private duty caregivers, in-home nurses, and companions and/or homemakers are just a few of the types of caregiver personnel available if extra support is needed while aging at home. It’s vital to not experience a decline in the quality of life, by staying at home as you age. The overall benefits of getting caregiver assistance include receiving additional companionship, reducing stress and strain, and freeing up time and energy so that the elderly can do the things that make life truly enjoyable. Seniors should be encouraged to pick up a longforgotten past-time or even new hobby. Learning something new such as a new game, musical instrument, foreign language is proven to stretch and flex mental ‘muscles.’ Staying Social and Active Physical, emotional, and mental health is the key to aging well as an elderly person. It is said that the more active and social you are and the more you use your brain, the more benefits you will get. This doesn’t have to be difficult. Family and friends should encourage their elderly relatives to stay
active and social to avoid social isolation. As a senior living with in-home care, it’s important to find and engage in activities that they enjoy. Elderly people should be encouraged to pick up a long-forgotten past-time or even new hobby. Learning something new such as a new game, musical instrument, foreign language is proven to stretch and flex mental ‘muscles.’Traveling, visiting museums, concerts, and plays, and spending time in nature can be inspiring and uplifting. Ongoing commitments like volunteering or joining a club can bring meaningful new friendships and help fill a senior’s social calendar. Playing with grandkids, nieces, nephews, and even pets are proven to reduce stress and support emotional health. We shouldn’t overlook how important the time and energy spent on doing things that bring social engagement, activity, and joy to the elderly. It will absolutely help support healthy aging. In Conclusion The point of aging at home is to stay independent and in the familiar environment we know and love. However, if the quality of daily life begins to deteriorate we must make the appropriate changes necessary to bring back the dignity and functionality of life. A bit of planning and modifying, changing, and getting extra in-home care assistance where necessary will do a lot to maintain the quality of life seniors deserve while living in their own home. This requires both commitment and openness to change by family members and elderly people themselves. Another key to helping the elderly age well at home is to stay social and active and do the things they love.

Call the police or 9-1-1 immediately if someone you know is in immediate, life-threatening danger. If the danger is not immediate, but you suspect that abuse has occurred or is occurring, please tell someone. Relay your concerns to the local adult protective services, long-term care ombudsman, or the police. If you have been the victim of abuse, exploitation, or neglect, you are not alone. Many people care and can help. Please tell your doctor, a friend, or a family member you trust, or call the Eldercare Locator help line immediately. You can reach the Eldercare Locator by telephone at 1-800-677-1116. Specially trained operators will refer you to a local agency that can help. The Eldercare Locator is open Monday through Friday, 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Eastern Time. The laws in most states require helping professions in the front lines -- such as doctors and home health providers -- to report suspected abuse or neglect. These professionals are called mandated reporters. Under the laws of eight states, "any person" is required to report a suspicion of mistreatment.

Recipe courtesy of simpleseasonal.com I must admit that I am not a fan of ham and bean soup, however I had a bunch of ham leftover from Christmastime so you know how that goes. I was excited to find this recipe from simpleseasonal. com; I had never made ham and bean soup before but knew I wanted to stay simple, use green beans and I loved that this recipe added noodles to the PA Dutch classic. I’m sorry if the addition of noodles offends you but I thought they were great! Also, upon seeing bacon grease as the first ingredient listed…I was sold. The only thing that I added (other than salt and pepper) was about an additional cup of chicken broth and I’m glad that I did. Having had so little ham and bean soup in the past, I can’t possibly say if this is the best recipe, but it was pretty darn good!

Fundraisers in your community for The Miller family On January 21 a devastating house fire claimed the lives of both Bruce “Buddy” Miller Jr., and his son Bruce Miller. The support and outreach from the community has been pouring for the Miller family, who are a staple to the community and a genuine, hard-working family, owners of Millers Market. To help the Miller family through this tragic loss and the tough days ahead, a number of businesses in the community will be holding fundraiser events where most or all of the proceeds will go directly to the Millers. On Monday, February 18 from 7 a.m. to noon, an all-you-can-eat breakfast buffet will be held at Blue Mountain Drive-In and Family Restaurant, located at 1439 Blue Mountain Dr. in Danielsville. Tickets may be purchased at the restaurant at a cost of $10. Please call 610-767-6379 for reservations. A 50/50 raffle will also be held. One hundred percent of the proceeds will be donated to the Miller family. On Saturday, March 2 from 2 until 8 p.m., a spaghetti dinner will be held at the Roosevelt Demo Club, located at 3980 Mountain View Dr., Danielsville. Tickets are $10, take-out is available and this event is open to the public. There will also be a basket raffle and bake sale. The Demo Club is currently accepting donations during business hours to anybody who would like to contribute. Call 610-767-2664 with questions. All proceeds will be donated to the Millers. A memorial ride will be held on April 27 starting and ending at Becky’s Drive-In, located at 4548 Lehigh Dr. in Walnutport. Registration will begin at 10 a.m. and kickstands will go up at noon. Operation Christmas Child Dear Editor, I am writing to thank Walnutport residents for sharing the true meaning of Christmas with children in need this past holiday season. Because of the generosity of donors in Walnutport and across the United States, Operation Christmas Child, a project of Samaritan’s Purse, collected more than 8.8 million shoeboxes in 2018. Combined with those collected from partnering countries in 2018, the ministry is now sending more than 10.6 million shoebox gifts to children suffering from poverty,
natural disasters, war, disease and famine. These simple gifts bring smiles to the faces of children around the world. Packed with fun toys, school supplies and hygiene items, these gifts bring joy and are a tangible expression of God’s love. Since 1993, Operation Christmas Child has collected and delivered more than 157 million gift-filled shoeboxes to children in more than 160 countries and territories. It’s not too late for people to make a difference. Though drop-off locations serving Walnutport shoebox packers are closed until November 2019, anyone can still pack a personalized shoebox gift online at samaritanspurse.org/buildonline. Information about year-round volunteer opportunities can also be found at samaritanspurse. org/volunteerwithOCC. Thank you again to everyone who participated in this global project—many who do so year after year. These simple gifts send a message to children worldwide that they are loved and not forgotten.

Lehigh Township Historical Society News Submitted by Ruth Hall Kent
It's been an interesting start to the new year for the Historical Society. Good news arrived from Northampton County that we were awarded a grant from the DCED Hotel Tax Grant program for a new sign to be erected outside our Historical Centre museum. The existing sign was no longer serving our purposes. Within a week of the notification the existing sign was demolished by a hit and run driver, so our project officially began with the dismantling of the old sign. It will be awhile before our new sign appears as there are many steps in the process, but keep your eyes open for the new sign showing up later this year! As our busy season is just around the corner, and we are starting off by helping out with the fundraiser for the Bruce Miller family being hosted by Blue Mountain Drive-In in Danielsville. A Breakfast Buffet with five seating times is being offered on President's Day Monday, February 18th, to benefit the family of Bruce Miller Jr. and his son who recently lost their lives in a tragic house fire. Stop in or call the restaurant at 610-767-6379 for more information. We are excited to inform the local community that we are launching a Business/Civic Supporting Membership and Sponsorship program at the Society in an effort to support our mission to preserve the history of the Lehigh Township area and maintain our Historical Centre Museum and St. Paul's Schoolhouse. We are offering four levels of participation with different benefits for the business or civic organization for their support or sponsorship. Details on how your business or organization can support our mission are on our website at www.lehightownshiphistoricalsociety. org/membership. Remember that we welcome any old or historical items that can be added to our museum collection. Any items you are donating can be dropped off on Tuesday mornings. You can keep up with our latest activities on our Facebook page or at our website at www.lehightownshiphistoricalsociety.org.

Foods you should not eat on Valentine’s Day If you want a kiss submitted by ASHLEY PONTIUS
Valentine’s Day is all about lovers, but it is hard to kiss your significant other if his or her breath is so bad it could make Cupid faint. “When love is in the air, you shouldn’t have to worry about how your breath smells,” says Dr. Harold Katz, bacteriologist and developer of TheraBreath Oral Rinses, Toothpastes, and Lozenges (www.therabreath.com) who is also known as “America’s Bad Breath Doctor.” Despite the focus on chocolates on Valentine’s Day, sugar in most forms can cause bad breath. “Sugar, found in many so-called breath mints energize bad breath bacteria to produce copious amounts of offensive Volatile Sulfur Compounds,” Dr. Katz says. “Theira strong fake mint of fruit flavoring only masks the odors for a few minutes.” Strong cheeses, garlic, onions and hot peppers can also lead to bad breath, Dr. Katz says. And if you went on a diet so you would be lean on Valentine’s Day, that may also be a problem. Some types of diets that are high in protein, such as the Atkins Diet, can also cause bad breath, says Dr. Katz. This is because bad breath bacteria break
down proteins and extract smelly sulfur elements as a by-product. “You can do things with natural foods to improve your breath,” Dr. Katz says. “Raspberries, strawberries and blueberries are some of the best, long-lasting breath fresheners, because they keep your mouth moist. And, obviously drinking 6-8 glasses of water daily helps to replenish saliva, our natural oral moisturizer. Bad breath can be more than just unpleasant. Persistent bad breath or a bad taste in the mouth may be a warning sign of gum (periodontal) disease. “Gum disease is caused by the buildup of plaque on the teeth,” Dr. Katz says. “Bacteria cause the formation of toxins and acids, which irritate the gums. And if gum disease continues untreated, it can damage the gums and the supporting bone. Good dental practices can help fight bad breath and prevent gum disease.” Dr. Katz has some suggestions before you go out on your Valentine’s Day date: Watch what you eat. Stay away from sweets and foods that cause bad breath. If you love

chocolate, switch to dark chocolate – it contains much less sugar and much less dairy proteins. Watch what you drink. Alcohol is chemically a drying agent. All alcoholic beverages make the mouth dry. In fact, many leading mouthwashes contain more alcohol than beer or wine. Consequently avoid alcohol based mouthwash and look for those powered by oxygen. If you’re going to have an alcohol beverage, sip some water afterwards to inhibit the drying effect. Brush regularly. Dr. Katz suggests brushing your teeth at least twice a day with a fluoride toothpaste and a soft nylon bristled brush. The fluoride is important to remineralize damaged tooth enamel. Medium and hard bristled brushes will destroy tooth enamel. “An old, worn out toothbrush cannot clean your teeth well and the toothbrush could also be harboring bacteria,” Dr. Katz says. “Because bad breath-causing bacteria breed below the surface of the tongue, a gentle brush on the surface of the tongue helps keep your breath fresh.” Don’t forget to floss. “Floss your teeth at least once each day,” Dr. Katz says. “Flossing properly removes plaque and food particles from between the teeth that could otherwise act as a fuel source for bad breath.” Drink Enough Water. Avoid dry mouth that
increases bad breath. “Saliva is nature’s way of cleaning the mouth,” Dr. Katz says.“If you have dry mouth, food particles and bacteria are not being washed away as they should be. This can cause bad breath. Drink plenty of water to stay hydrated. Keep in mind that coffee, with or without caffeine, can contribute to dry mouth.” Be careful with so-called “Breath Mints”. Many are full of sugar and won’t cure the real reason you have bad breath. About Dr. Harold Katz Dr. Harold Katz (www.therabreath.com), developer of TheraBreath Dry Mouth Oral Rinse and Lozenges, received his degree in bacteriology from UCLA and is the founder of The California Breath Clinics and author of The Bad Breath Bible. He has been featured on ABC’s “Good Morning America,” CBS’s “Early Show” and “The View” with Barbara Walters and countless other TV shows. Dr. Katz has developed oxygenating compounds that have been used by millions around the world to eliminate bad breath. He is also the bearer of the now famous “Halimeter,” which tests the sulfur compounds in the mouth that cause bad breath. Dr. Katz’ website offers a free online bad breath test – as well as a sneaky way to tell someone they have halitosis.

In meaning one hears in it. There was once a young fellow, Who was in dire distress Very far from home, from good friends And truly wished himself dead. Then he thought about his folks at home, And sent them a letter once; Perhaps they would have some sympathy For this, his deep trouble. His parents were not well educated And could not read; Then they went to the school and asked [If] the teacher should read it. There was children’s ‘trashy behavior’ that day Very stupid and cruel; That had angered the teacher so, Had him at the end of his rope. That scoundrel still had in his mind How mean the children were; He tore the letter away from the father And read it angrily: “My dear father, I am sick, This is a cold world; Among strangers, I am in necessity, Send me some money once!” He thrust the letter in the father’s hand, And went in the schoolhouse; It struck the old folks hard, They seemed to be dreaming. Eventually they wake up, Then the father said in anger:

“Yes, well, I think one lets it go then, [If] he has such a stunt in his head. I won’t send a red cent to him once, Such a truly thankless man; If he writes such am angry letter to me, It makes me also angry then.” – The mother wept a little over it – This was not her boy, Who writes such a letter to his parents, And angry yet on top of it. No, there was surely something wrong With the Teacher’s job; Her motherly heart was heavy and hurting, So she said to the father: “The pastor is also well educated, Let us go over once And see then what he gets out of it, Then I will say no more.” So that evening those good people, With heart and spirit so full, Went to Pastor Schmidt with their letter And they asked [if] he should read it. Pastor Schmidt was a good man, With comfort for all sorts of [things]; Perhaps also his head not to gladly [go] Where there is no reason [to go] at all. He took the letter from the father and read With a voice so sweet and says; (Now listen to the pastor once,
The difference it makes.): “My dear father, I am sick, This is a cold world; I am in distress among strangers, Only sent me a little money.” “Oh,” cries the mother, “my poor boy, From afar he calls us; One would not think it could certainly be – Come, dad, he is calling to you!” Tears also stand in the eye(s) for the father, He wipes them quickly away, And early next morning, with the first mail, He sent his boy a check. I will repeat it again: it happens, As letters are read, How for many people, the difference In meaning one hears in it. [Sometimes how one says something carries as much weight as what one says! Gelle? Not so?]
